Y’see. I was getting so exhausted by Star Wars bc everywhere I looked there was more mandalorian content. I don’t just mean Din; it’s just everywhere. I can’t turn around with seeing another helmet freak.

So then I was like: oh Sabine is in Ahsoka? That’s cool. Bc at least this is a mandalorian I like.

The thing about Sabine is that she’s an artist. That’s her character. She’s obsessed with weapons like other mandalorians, but not in a “usamerican republican guns make me cool” way but in a weapon specialist and designer way.

She built weapons. She was good at it. Then she saw them destroy people she loved. A culture she loved. So now she used her knowledge of weapons and fought for things like freedom and justice. and she was an *artist* about it. She made explosive graffiti. She painted her armor so she was a walking canvas. She was interesting.

And so, with all the mandalorian stuff in Star Wars rn I thought, ok, well. Still obsessed with mandolarians, bc they’re making money. But at least we’re getting into the type of mandalorian I enjoy. A mandalorian who has a design and a interesting plot to follow.

And then they make her a Jedi!?

WHY?

Apparently we’re only obsessed with the rugged father Pedro Pascal mandalorian and the war criminal who no one mentions is a war criminal mandalorian. The interesting mandalorian gets her entire culture and backstory ignored so we can insult the Jedi order and pretend what the Jedi REALLY need is a warrior who’s not even interested and not force sensitive swinging around a lightsaber without even learning the code.

She can fight with Ezra’s lightsaber and not be a jedi. Go for it. But it’s becoming clear that they’re doing this to show Ashoka as somehow “more inclusive” than the order and like???? Why would you ruin a character your current audience would have preferred before?

I took a break from drawing Dragon Age Inquisition fan art (because let's face it, it's not doing well here on Tumblr or my Instagram) and returned to Star Wars!

So, who else is totally loving Star Wars Rebels Season 5, er, I mean...Ahsoka?

I drew this today! It was a random idea that came into my mind when I watched episode 4 (for the 2nd time on Friday) with my son. Sabine has such a cool look in the first episode and I love her darling Loth Cat. Why are Loth cats so cute? I want one! This version of Sabine would be so cool to cosplay, but I think I will pass (as much as I love her character) because I know she's going to be a super popular cosplay and I don't think I will even have time & money to make/buy it. As it is, I need to get started on my new SW cosplays for me and my son (for WonderCon next year). I have been in such a mental funk the past few months and wasn't in a cosplay mood, which was one reason I started with the DAI artwork. (I'm so obsessed with that beautiful game!)

I love, Love, LOVE seeing the Rebels characters in their live action version. So far the series has been most excellent! However, I am a wee bit sad that it is only 8 episodes total. Even so: I'm elated that we are getting this series. I can't wait to see what happens in the next episode. The two Sith look so cool, don't they?

Drawn with Sakura Pigma Micron Pens, and then coloured in with a mixture of Copic Markers & Ohuhu Markers. White accents done with a gel pen. I originally drew the city skyline but it looked like absolute rubbish (the "joy" of traditonal art...once you eff up, you can't fix it), so I edited in the city in Photoshop Elements (using a stock photo) and tweaked it a bit. The clouds are also done in Photoshop (because they are hard to draw), as well as the font. A mix of traditional and digital art!

Sims 4 CC: Bo-Katan and Mandalorian Nite Owl Armor Set

Beskar for all!

After years of being tired of seeing poor Bo stuck in Boba's ill fitting armor, while being impaled with a rocket she doesn't canonically wear, much misery in blender was had to ensure that bespoke armor for your Mandalorian ladies is finally here!

In a star system where pink martinis flow like molten steel, one woman, who was totally supposed to get her own armor in season five before Disney bought Lucasfilm (the design was awesome), and her sister took what little intel they could scrape from the son of a time traveling himbo in gleaming beskar, and decided to bury the hatchet.

Did a terrible fate befall the Wren family during The Great Purge, causing Sabine to shed her armor and forlornly grow her hair out?

Din really has no idea who that is, sorry-

But in a better galaxy where Jango's sons all have a different explanation for what happened to the beloved Chancellor of the Republic and the only Duchess is a woman who is happy to grant her sister control over Mandalore's defenses if it means no more of Koska's bottomless rootbeer floats, we'll never find out.

I'll be making a version of the armor with rain ponchos, as well as a set of forehead braids for Koska and finishing up Bo's headset, so stay tuned for that :)

Rebels Rewatch: "Legacy of Mandalore"

A Mandalorian family reunion!

Live reaction version from 2017.

I do find it hilarious that the kids are in the front seats, driving and co-piloting, while the adults are hanging out in the back.

Ezra's little, "Wait a minute." moment lol.

Nice to hear this bit of spoken Mando'a.

Chopper banging on the outside of the Phantom II with his manipulators lol.

Remember what I said last rewatch about how the two of them develop into co-protagonists? Part of that seems to be that they start spending more time in the cockpit together. :)

Subtle animation appreciation moment: The snow clumps being shaken off the tops of the trees as they're passing.

Ah yes, one of the parts of the episode that almost seems like it's playing Ezra off as Sabine's "problem boyfriend" that she's bringing home to meet mom and dad. <3

So it was definitely the Supercommando armor that set Ezra off.

I do not know what it is but Disney has been pulling some really weird shit regarding age order of siblings lately, Tristan does not look like he's the younger sibling at all.

Also Isabella and Luisa should be totally switched around, c'mon.

Subtle animation appreciation moment: How their feet actually sink into the snow with realistic weight and powder compression.

Love the design of the Wren stronghold. Very Modern Architecture.

Takes Sabine promising that the lightsabers will be safe before Ezra decides to give his up. (And yet later in the climax he doesn't even hesitate to throw it to her, aaaaaah!)

Don't mind me, just appreciating the design of this place.

Ursa sounds an awful lot like Fenn "I made a deal with the Empire to survive" Rau here. I doubt the parallels aren't deliberate.

So I guess the takeaway lesson is don't make deals with the evil empire because it will always screw you over.

*whispers* If no supposed to ship why have Ezra being adorkable towards Sabine's brother just like Kanan was adorkable at Hera's father?

Really can't get over the scenery in this episode it's so soft and pretty.

Ursa was so ready to be impressed that her babygirl kicked Maul's ass and so disappointed when that wasn't the case lol.

Does seem like Sabine had a difficult childhood even before the whole Dutchess fiasco. Maybe that was why she decided to go to the Imperial Academy in the first place? Who knows.

My genre-savvy called a lot of the beats this episode, which made it just a smidge predictable for me the first time around.

Not gonna lie, Rau sneaking through the complex is actually kind of hilarious.

I'll bet Alrich painted that for her. :)

Ngl, the dialogue in this scene is just a bit weirdly written, I dunno what it is but it bugs me.

Ezra's so proud that Sabine kicked Gar Saxon's ass lol.

Underappreciated Papa Wolf Kanan moment: Shielding Ezra from the guardsman's blasters.

You know I don't wonder why Sabine latched onto the Ghost crew as her new family, high-ranking Mandalorian clans seem overly obsessed with prestige.

Tristan is a blabbermouth lol, still can't get over that.

Oh man this expression. She must feel like she's relieving her family's disowning all over again.

Saxon is a master at finding loopholes isn't he?

I don't think this brief fakeout from Tristan was necessary, I think he should have just immediately turned guns on Saxon from the beginning.

Nice to hear Sabine's theme in the score tho.

Sabine's theme is in french horns now, it sounds like. This iteration of the theme is less mournful and more action-oriented, with flute trills and timpani percussion.

The cracking ice is mostly symbolic I think. I did worry at the time of airing if someone was going to wind up falling in.

Sabine using basic lightsaber positions like Kanan and Ezra taught her. <3

...Was it implied that Sabine hacked off Saxon's arm there or...? Camera angle makes it difficult to discern.

I don't think it's a coincidence that Saxon winds up in a position like Dooku's or the Grand Inquisitor's in the Season One finale, lightsaber blades held crossed at their throats.

But Sabine, having been heavily influenced by the Jedi in her life, chooses mercy over revenge. The moment is even punctuated by a snippet of the Force Theme. Aaaaaaaah I love it, I love that Sabine has let Kanan's influence soak into her so much, has become so much more Jedi than Mandalorian and been made better for it.

Oh, his arm's intact, okay then.

I have... Thoughts™ about the entire Mandalorian mindset of needing chaos to become strong and refusing outside help to fight its battles and how the whole Proud Warrior Race thing so often works against them rather than for them but I'll leave them unsaid for now.

This status quo change was honestly completely unexpected, and frankly, the episode is eons better for it.

Sabine's theme is in a triumphant key now, as she watches the Phantom II leave.

So! This episode is not nearly as good as the previous one, and it's bit predictable, as I said. It's not bad, though, and it's obviously a necessary one for Sabine's growth and character arc, and the overall Mandalorian arc. I was weirdly a little bored this time? Aside from the cute Sabezra bits and the fact that they were bold enough to change up the status quo by having Sabine stay on Krownest, I really feel like this could have been so much stronger as an episode.

Maybe if we axed one of the fillers and made this a two-parter? Idk.

The episode is still decently entertaining enough and has lots of lovely quality Sabine content for those in fandom whose primary investment is her. She gets to really shine here, and show off how far she's come as a character. Which is great.

I think at the time there was a genuine worry that Sabine was being written out of the show. I know I needed a little bit of time to process the thought of her being absent the next couple episodes. But again, they made a narrative choice and stuck with it and I admire that. So I really can't hate this episode. :)

Of course next time we're at my favorite episode of the season and the whole inspiration for an accidentally giant-ass AU that I wrote. See y'all then!

I’m getting on the bus way late, but I feel compelled to defend the Wolfwren ship.

To preface, if it was made to be canon, it would be hugely impactful for the LGBTQ community as a whole for so many reason. In the same breath, however, I don’t see it ever becoming canon. Maybe I’m just jaded by the sheer number of queer-coded people in media with literally zero payoff. Never mind the fact that Lucasfilm is owned by Disney, who despite ring-wing criticisms, are by far the most vanilla, lukewarm media creator who shows literally zero inclination or willingness to “rock the boat” in any capacity. Truly, I would be shocked and nothing they have ever done has shocked me. And, honestly, it doesn’t truly matter either way. People should be allowed to enjoy what they enjoy without people judging or constantly attacking people over it. It’s all fiction regardless. The Wolf and the Wren don’t even exist in reality, so…

Still, the actors involved have obviously embraced it, fed into it, appreciate it, and I think that’s adorable and commendable. I find it incredibly interesting, yet not shocking that Natasha Liu Bordizzo picked up on Sabine’s clear queer-coding (whether purposefully done or not) and ran with it. This isn’t wholly relevant in and of itself, but I’m building to my point.

My point is that I have seen some arguments against Wolfwren that come from very homophobic, comphet places. Gayness still makes many people uncomfortable, and I’ll be honest, that’s on the person that’s being made uncomfortable by it and not the gay in question. Particularly, and since it is now sort of socially unacceptable to outright bash the LGBTQ community, I see A LOT of red herring arguments being made to try and divert attention to the real reasons that they hate it. And, I’m going to discuss one of those arguments that feels like is being made in bad faith.

The argument in question is the comparison to Wolfwren and Reylo. Many anti-wolfwrenners argue that they hate the ship because it reminds them of Reylo, a problematic ship between two people with a borderline abusive power dynamic that weirdly fall in love after a series of very questionable interactions.

And first, let’s be honest, some of these people probably do, at some levels, like and appreciate Reylo and that’s fine. To each their own. But, Wolfwren isn’t anything like Reylo at all. And comparisons truly cannot be made like that here.

Is Wolfwren problematic on the surface based on the happenings of Ahsoka season one alone? Yes. Absolutely. It’s not a washed and folded LGBTQ pairing. It’s not supposed to be. Their relationship has started out in kind of an ugly place. They’ve been gritty and violent. They’ve attempted to kill each other multiple times. That’s madness.

Still, there is no lop-sided power dynamic here though. Kylo Ren was obviously more powerful than Rey, both in the force and by societal position. He was a right hand man to the leader of the First Order. Rey was just a scavenger, rummaging for parts on a backwater planet. He’d studied the force since he was a tot. Rey didn’t even realize she had it. They were not equals. Sabine and Shin are, in every aspect of the word, equals in the story. Shin ultimately gay panics and stabs Sabine in the torso, but Sabine struck first in that skirmish. In fact, Sabine struck first in every battle that she and Shin had. And while Shin did have force powers where Sabine had yet to unlock her own potential, Sabine’s a bad ass. She’s not tradwife material (despite a lot of preconceived notions). She’s a warrior, someone that likely had blasters in her hands before she could write. That is something in and of itself. Sabine is equally capable, if not more so than Shin. Sabine is not a helpless victim just because she got stabbed, she has been an equal participant in every interaction that she and Shin have had.

Another difference is that Shin and Sabine have not lobbed words of hate, disdain or abuse at one another. Shin tells Sabine, “you have no power” then Sabine straight up shoots her with an arm cannon as if to say, “bet”. Other than that, there has been no hateful banter between them. At no point have either of them uttered the words “you’re nothing” while the other stood by in tears. It’s basically been well-matched sword duels where neither has truly gotten the upper hand outside of one lucky strike at the beginning. Sabine was unbalanced.

What truly makes this a decent ship is the “enemies to lovers” dynamic, a plot device that has been used time and time again in media (albeit mostly in cishet connotation where it doesn’t seem to bother other cishets). Shin is not beyond redemption. She isn’t inherently evil. She hasn’t truly abused Sabine outside of fighting back after Sabine went after her. Shin has done nothing other than sword fight with an equal, and follow around a master with questionable values. She is still perfectly capable of a redemptive arc, something that I feel was teased in episode 7 when Ahsoka reached out calmly to Shin saying, “I can help you.” It will not shock me when Shin does turn to the Jedi in the story, where she could and likely will find belonging. With that, she and Sabine could find happiness in a more homo-friendly, less heteronormative society. And if either of them were male and the other female, it would totally be embraced by the larger viewing audience as totally normal and okay.

So yeah… there it is.

Does it pass?

Well, here we are. At the end. I'm happy to say, the series finale passes! Technically, this is two episodes but it aired at once (along with 'A Fool's Hope') and is presented as 1 episode on Disney Plus, so it gets a single post. It doesn't matter anyway since both halves of the finale pass. Sabine and Ketsu exchange dialogue as the group infiltrates the dome. In the back half, Hera and Sabine speak throughout the episode.

Pryce has a decent role here, though she is held prisoner by the Rebels for the whole finale before going out in a fiery blaze not unlike the death she gave Kanan. Ketsu is very much in a supporting role here but she does help Kallus, Zeb, Hondo, and the clones get the shield generator back online. I'm stretching my rules a bit and counting this as an appearance for Ahsoka even though she has no dialogue. Her appearance at the very end is so iconic and meaningful that I think it deserves a pass.

I'm also including Mira and Ephraim Bridger for poor Ezra. I know how badly he wanted to see them again, but he saw through Sheev's lies and chose the light.

It is worth noting that this is the most female characters to appear in a single episode

Overall, this may be one of my favorite series finales in television history... not to oversell it or anything. In all seriousness, I can think of few other series finales that are as satisfying as this.

Some of that is because of the epilogue.... and we'll finally be getting the continuation of that story in just a week. All I can hope for is that Ahsoka is on par with Rebels.

Best of 2023 TV Shows #15: Ahsoka (DIsney+)*

Our midway point of the year’s nominations for Best New Show and we come back to the Mando Verse with an outing that can be more inclined to a 5th Season of Rebels than a separate Ahsoka series.

On her search for Grand Admiral Thrawn, Ahsoka Tano comes across a map that leads to the uncharted galaxy that Ezra Bridger exiled himself and Thrawn to during the Battle of Lothal.

On the advice of Hera Syndulla, Ahsoka seeks out Sabine Wren now living in Ezra’s former home on Lothal. In the time period since the war ended Ahsoka ended up training Sabine in the ways of the force. But discontinued it when she realized she was only wanting to get Ezra back.

All the while a dark Jedi named Baylan Skoll and his own apprentice Shin Hati frees Morgan Elsbeth the nightsister who was the magistrate of Calodan in Mando Season 2 as they also seek out the map to bring back Thrawn.

Serving as a continuation of Rebels while setting the pieces for Filonis version of Heir to the Empire, Ahsoka does manage to hold its own thanks to both callbacks to the past and moving things along.

Rosario Dawson, comes into her own as the former Jedi. While the seasons highlights belong to Ray Stevenson as Baylan, Natasha Liu Bordizzo making Sabine the best character to come out of the Ghost crew, and Eman Esfandi giving life to an older but not all the wiser Ezra.

Even support coming from Mary Elizabeth Winstead’s Hera and David Tennats One off clone wars droid Huyang accentuated things here.

Plus Lars Mikkelsen having the Grand Admiral nailed down.

With its open ended conclusion as the board is set for Thrawn and Dathromir Ahsoka does manage to do what it sets out to do.

Move on and Look Forward.

If only the Purgil can give us a ride to 2027.

all-rounding questions to the ahsoka show (questions are also related to the sequels; respectfully asking, this ain't a place to bash them because I love the characters but also displeased with the writing and the way disney betrayed them):

jacen is a jedi and obviously luke and hera know each other, so he's going to train, right? or does hera decide something else for him considering kylo went on to destroy the temple?

are there any more details we can get about seatos considering it was settled by an extragalactic species and that it has an entrance to the world between worlds?

i hope we get to see bits of peridea; not much, but enough.

where's leia in all this? and luke? ik appearance isn't possible but a mention would be great.

would travel to peridea possibly create a rift in the galactic barrier of the known galaxy? there was some SERIOUS void-like cronau radiation trailing behind when the ship jumped to hyperspace 👀

how did clan wren d-word? and why didn't ahsoka trust sabine? was it with regards to physical or mutual support?

hands down, ep4 is a gazillion out of 10 from me. as i've indicated, I am clearly very much dead, and will be back alive next week to scream more.

Brycan exists in a hybrid AU of the Legends and Disney continuities. He's the son of Ezra and Sabine, born shortly after the Thrawn Trilogy. He grows up as a close friend of Jacen, Jaina and Anakin Solo, while also being super close to his "uncles" Kanan and Zeb and "aunts" Hera and Ketsu. Brycan is a kind and friendly boy who nontheless has a sarcastic streak rivaling his parents, and his passion for athletics and martial arts serves him well in his Mandalorian upbringing and Jedi training. Unsurprisingly, Brycan still grows up with a good deal of pressure, what with being descended from two cultural factions known for conflict with each other and being the child of two prominent war heroes. Determined to live up to his heritage while also stepping out of his parents' shadows, Brycan becomes a passionate Mandalorian warrior before enrolling in Luke Skywalker's Jedi Paraxeum on Yavin 4. He does struggle to reconcile the contradictory aspects of the Mandalorians and the Jedi, but he does eventually learn to form a good balance with the help of his parents and Din Djarin.

The Yuuzhan Vong War puts Brycan though the biggest wringer yet, as the horrors of war cost him multiple friends and his mother is grievously wounded shortly after giving birth to his sister Mazal. He is roped into a faction of more militant Mandalorian crusaders who encourage him to give into his passions and pain, leading to a tense conflict with his father. However, Ezra manages to save his son from falling down the dark path, and he rejects the hollow promises of revenge. He finally comes into his own as a Jedi Knight by wars' end, priding himself as a credit to his forebearers as a true Mandalorian Jedi. Other notes: -Brycan's lightsaber features a metallic crossguard, giving it the profile of a knight's broadsword. -While not as vibrant as his mom, he still inherited Sabine's artistic skill, particularly as a sketch artist. -His best friend is Han and Leia's daughter Jaina, both of their natural fighting instincts feeding their desire to test and improve themselves. -Teenage rebellion and war trauma aside, he loves his parents more than anything in the world and adores his younger sister Mazal. -He owns a Loth-wolf he rescued as a cub named Beskad (the mando'a word for "sword") -One of his fondest childhood memories is getting piggyback rides from Zeb.
