A divergence from my usual First Words soulmates ‘verse, this is a First Touch ‘verse. Skin contact is required.
“So Agent Rumlow will be completing the security assessment and taking over management of all security aspects for the lab,” Fury concluded.Jane shrugged, not caring one way or the other. Darcy scowled.
“Is he going to be as dumb as the last one? Because trying to tell Jane that the lab can only be open at certain hours is a short trip to me getting on the phone and chewing your ear out again.”
“Trust me, Miss Lewis,” Fury said, bone-dry, “Agent Rumlow knows his business. Part of his job description is keeping you out of my ear.”
Darcy grinned at Fury’s tone. “Fair enough. I’ll give him a shot. Is he at least better looking than the last dude? I could do with some eye candy around here.”
Fury was, for once, shocked into silence. Darcy laughed and ended the skype call before swiveling on her lab chair. Jane had already returned to muttering over some equations, and Darcy, hearing a vehicle outside, got up and headed to the door to look. A black SUV had just pulled up in the parking lot, pretty much screaming government issued vehicle.
“Looks like a dead bore already,” Darcy muttered, and then had to lean against the door to hold herself up when the man driving the car got out. Medium height, there was absolutely nothing else average about him, from the spectacularly carved cheekbones to the incredible physique doing very nice things inside a tight black T-shirt. “Well, hubba hubba!”
Muscled, Dark and Lickable swung a hefty-looking kit bag onto his shoulder and headed for the door, and Darcy suddenly realized she was standing right there staring at him. She didn’t have time to hurry away and pretend to be doing something else, so she decided to just brazen it out; she wasn’t going to pretend she hadn’t seen him coming.
“Afternoon, ma’am,” he said as the door swung closed behind him and he saw her standing there. “Agent Brock Rumlow.” Instead of offering a hand to shake, he held out a leather ID folder; Darcy had been reaching for the handshake and quickly adjusted into taking the folder from his hand instead, flipping it open to check the picture inside.
“Thank you,” she handed him back. “Darcy Lewis. I’m Dr. Foster’s assistant…”
“Lab manager, is the job description in your file.” Rumlow arched a black brow.
“Call it whatever you want, up to and including babysitter. I’m the one who makes sure Jane has whatever she needs to get her research done, including food and sleep. You’re here to keep her safe.”
“And you.” He plucked his ID folder from her fingers, stuffed it back in a pocket. “Operationally, you’re almost as good a target as Dr. Foster, because you’re of value to her.”
“Wow, that’s cold,” Darcy said when she got her breath back.
Rumlow smiled, but there was no warmth behind it. “I’m not here for warm and fuzzies, Ms. Lewis. I’m here to keep Dr. Foster and her work safe. Part of my job is thinking like the bad guys. What would I do if I wanted to disrupt the situation? What’s the easiest way in? Who’s the softest target?” He shrugged. “No offence, but Dr. Foster rarely leaves the lab. You’re the one who goes wandering off to coffee shops whenever the urge strikes.”
He was right, and worse, he’d obviously been surveilling her for at least a couple days before turning up to start work. Darcy wanted to smack the smirk off his face. Instead, she bit on the inside of her cheek, lifted her chin, and said “Then tell me what I need to do. I’m not about to jeopardize everything Jane’s worked for by being careless.”
His eyes warmed, just slightly, and he held out his hand to shake. “Good. I’m glad you’re willing to listen.”
She didn’t like what he was saying at all, but he was right, damn him, so she took his hand with a nod. And gasped, because the powerful zing of electricity shooting up her arm was way, way too powerful to be just static.
“Holy shit,” she gasped.
Rumlow’s hand tightened around hers. He blew out his cheeks, shook his head, and finally laughed ruefully. “Well. This changes everything, huh?”
My soulmate. This infuriatingly cocky, overly handsome man is my soulmate? Darcy found a smile in response, just as stunned as he seemed to be. “Yes,” she agreed, though it wasn’t until more than a year later she’d discover just how much that simple touch of hands had changed, when Rumlow finally admitted who he used to work for. “Yes… this changes everything.”

Two Years Later
Remy LeBeau whistled under his breath as he walked quietly up to the lab’s front doors. At three in the morning, the building was dark and silent, and for once, he was absolutely certain neither Dr. Foster nor any of her small team of brilliant boffins were working late, because every last one of them was in Sweden, and would be watching the doctor accept her Nobel Prize for Physics later that day.
And while they were gone, Remy would slip into the lab, copy onto a specially made hard drive all the data from their network-isolated server, and be gone again with nobody the wiser and research worth a cool hundred million dollars in his pocket.
The electronic door yielded easily to the swipe card he’d lifted from one of the science boffins’ apartments an hour earlier. He’d even put the card back exactly where he’d found it when he was done. This whole heist depended on nobody knowing he’d ever been there.
And it all came spectacularly undone when he padded silently into the server room and found a couple having extremely enthusiastic sex on a desk.
The woman, an attractive brunette, saw him first over the man’s shoulder. Blue eyes widened and she shrieked. “Brock!”
Remy had to give the man credit; he was both fast and completely unconcerned about his nudity. He spun away from the desk - and the woman on it, who was distractingly beautiful enough to slow Remy down at least a little while he got an eyeful - and whipped a keyboard at Remy’s head. Remy snapped an arm up to block and very nearly missed the foot coming for his groin at the same moment.
For a few minutes, Remy had his hands full, respect quickly dawning for the guy who was doing his level best against a superhuman, naked and unarmed to boot. It was never going to be an equal fight, though, and Remy was absolutely there to cheat, flicking a playing card into his opponent’s face in a blaze of energy and sweeping his legs out from under him while the guy was distracted.
The mission was shot to shit; the best thing he could do now was knock the guy unconscious, do the same for his lover, and steal the data anyway. Hopefully it would still have value even though the burglary itself was compromised.
The two pins slamming into his chest interrupted his plan to go down and choke the guy out, and he gasped and shuddered as the Taser emptied 50,000 volts into him. The woman was staring at him, eyes narrowed, Taser in one hand and a gun in the other, obviously both grabbed from pockets of the clothes strewn around on the floor.
Shouldn’t have underestimated her, Remy thought, and then he thought again. A Taser didn’t have the same effect on him as on normal folks due to his ability to absorb energy, but a bullet… that would hurt. A lot. At this range, she could hardly miss.
As the shock cut off, Remy shut his eyes and let himself drop limply to the floor.
“Brock, you all right?” the woman asked.
“Yeah.” Brock pulled himself up off the floor, cursing under his breath. “Who the fuck is that guy? The only person who ever got the drop on me like that was Cap himself. Something ain’t right about him, Darcy.”
“Yeah, well, this Taser took down Thor, and it got him too.” Darcy sounded smug, and Remy had to bite on his lip to hide his smile. He liked her, dammit. But he was still gonna snatch that gun out of her hand the second he got the chance. She was coming closer, bending over him… he prepared without letting muscles tense, keeping his breathing slow, focussing on the precise moves he’d need to make…
Soft fingers grazed his neck, and a bolt of energy far greater than the Taser’s 50,000 volts sent a convulsion through him. Eyes snapping wide open, he sat bolt upright, forgetting all about the gun, and stared into his soulmate’s blue eyes.
His soulmate, who he’d just found banging another man…
… not a great start.
“What the hell!” Brock snatched the gun from Darcy’s hand, aimed it at Remy’s head with rock-steady hands.
“That was a soulmate shock,” Darcy whispered, utterly stunned. “Brock. That was a soulmate shock.”
“Sorry,” Remy offered, aware it was inadequate. “You two look like you’re, uh, yeah. Sorry.”
“You don’t get it.” Darcy smiled. “We’re soulmates, Brock and I. You must be the third we didn’t know we were missing.”
“I’m just trying to wrap my mind around the idea of one soulmate,” Remy confessed after a moment of stunned silence.
Brock chuckled a little roughly. “Join the club. I’m still gettin’ used to it, two years in.” He offered a hand, to help Remy up.
Remy hesitated, and then stripped off his leather gloves. No point worrying now about his fingerprints on the place. He spared a wistful regret for the loss of his 20% commission before grasping Brock’s hand and letting the electricity sear him to his soul for the second time.

Random AU
“Hijacked a car with someone sleeping in the back”
“This is, by far, the worst mission Remy has ever taken part in.” Gambit complained in his deep southern drawl, flipping the collar of his trench coat up. He stuck a hand in his pocket, pulling out a pack of cigarettes.
“Quit griping Cajun, you're alive aren't you?” Brock snapped, jamming his hands in his pockets to stave off the chill of mid December. Christmas lights glared in the windows of the business they passed, brighter in the dark than they had been earlier in the day.
“Piss off.” Gambit mumbled around his cigarette. He pressed a finger to the tip and lit it. “We need to find a vehicle.”
“What do you think I'm doing?” Brock questioned, eyes scanning their surroundings. Just keep your eyes peeled. Escape isn't going to mean shit if we’re followed.”
“Ya think.” Gambit replied sarcastically.
“How the fuck did fate decide to stick me with you?”
Gambit grinned. “What can Remy say, he handsome, rich, talented.”
“Modest.”
“Eh, modest is for thieves who never beat a Steranko.” Gambit chuckled.
“You did not beat a Steranko.” Brock replied.
“Oh but Remy did. Was glorious.”
Brock rolled his eyes as they turned to corner. “There,” he interrupted before Gambit could praise himself again. “Long term parking. No one will miss any of those for awhile.”
“Lead the way.”
In the end they settled on a lime green Volkswagen beetle. Neither of them are thrilled with the idea, but it’s the least conspicuous car and the closest to the exit. Gambit has the doors open and the car started before Brock can blink and within a minute their driving down the street in search of the closest safe house. They made it two city blocks before things got weird.
“Did you hear that?” Brock asked, turning to look at Gambit in the driver’s seat.
“Hear what?” Gambit replied.
“It sounds like something is in here.”
“Your paranoid, mon coeur.” Gambit told him.
“That’s my job.” Brock replied, looking over his shoulder. The only thing he could see in the back seat was a bundle of blankets all piled up messily. It could have been a trick of the eye as he turned back around but he was almost certain he had seen them move. He tapped Gambit on arm and gestured toward the back seat. Despite his disbelief, Gambit nodded and slowed down as Brock unhooked his seatbelt and turned around, leaning into the gap between the seats and grabbing one of the blankets. He yanked it off quickly, startling the body beneath.
“I’m sorry!” a young woman’s voice called out, muffled by the pillow she’d jammed her face into. “I wasn’t trying to steal I just needed a place to sleep, please don’t call the police!”
Brock gripped the seat as Gambit swerved, pulling off the road and as horns blared at them. “Relax sweetheart, you're safe.” Brock replied instinctively. The young woman finally turned to look up at him with wide blue eyes and Brock wondered if her own soul mark was tingling like his was.
“Merde.” Gambit swore, drawing their attention. He too was looking back at her. The young woman slowly sat up, keeping herself as far from them as she could manage.
“Talk about two birds with one stone.” she muttered.
Gambit grinned. “Remy never do nothin’ by half measures.”
She smiled softly, but it was gone quickly as she noticed the way Brock was staring at her. He recognized her from somewhere. “What’s your name sweetheart?” he asked.
She hesitated. “Darcy.” she finally replied and recognition lit in his eyes.
“Darcy Lewis?” he asked watching as her trepidation grew.
“You already know her?” Gambit questioned confused. Brock nodded.
“She’s Dr. Jane Foster’s assistant. She was kidnapped two weeks ago. S.H.I.E.L.D. has been looking for her. It’s taken all of Coulson’s influence to keep Thor from leveling Manhattan.” Brock explained. “I assume you escaped?” he asked.
She nodded. “A couple of days ago.” she replied.
“Why haven’t you called in?” Gambit asked.
“I didn’t know who to trust. The men who took me were dressed like S.H.I.E.L.D. agents, they had the badges, the uniform, they even knew the secret code Coulson and I came up with in case Jane or I needed to be retrieved from the field and he or his team couldn’t come themselves.” Darcy explained. “They kept me in a bunker in the woods about a day's walk from here. I don’t know what direction, I lost my bearings in my panic to escape.”
“Okay,” Brock said turning to Gambit. “Get moving, we’ll head for the Avenger’s compound. It's only a few hours from here.” Gambit nodded, restarting the car and getting back on the road.
As they started driving again, Darcy shifted to a better seat so she could buckle herself up and it was then Brock noticed the makeshift bandage around her hand. “What happened to your hand?” he asked.
“I, um, I knew they needed me alive so I made it look like I’d tried to kill myself so they would come and check on me. When their guard was down I fought back. Managed to knock a couple of them out before I ran.” she explained. Brock smirked.
“Impressive.” he replied, before crawling into the back seat with her. “Here, let me see.” Brock didn’t have a lot on him since he wasn’t in his tac uniform, but he cleaned her wound as best he could and wrapped it up in a clean towel he found among the blankets.
“Yeah, well, they should just be thankful I didn’t have my taser on me, or they’d all be drooling right now.”
Brock chuckled as Gambit laughed from the front seat. “Chere, Remy think this is the start of a beautiful relationship.”

Happy Belated Fanfiction Writers Appreciation Day!
I had no spoons to do this the other day, but fanfiction is such a huge part of and legitimate joy in my life that I need to acknowledge that.
I am fandom old y’all! I’ve been involved in fandom and reading fanfiction since 1994. I’ve been in dozens of fandoms and read thousands and thousands of fanfictions. My life has been made richer every day by fanfiction authors and the blood, sweat, and tears that they pour into their work.
I follow many tremendous authors on here - this is only a small sampling of the wonderful gifts that they have put out into the world. I had to force myself to choose only one from each author.
Thank you all so much for everything you do - for making me laugh and cry, for dreaming up new and exciting ways for me to fall in love with these characters all over again. I love you all, thank you so much for sharing your remarkable talent with us!
@jadziabear - Some Nights - Bucky/Darcy/Steve. I believe that this may have been the first Bucky/Darcy/Steve - I love Darcy in this- her heart is so big and she loves so hard and you just want to hug her.
@amidtheflowers - A Little Bravery - Bucky/Darcy. It would be impossible for me to express my love for this story. It’s so utterly charming and sweet and I love this happy well-adjusted Bucky completely. Plus the kissing is A+!
@yespumpkindoodlesthings - Welcome to Vampireville, USA, Darcy Lewis - Brock/Darcy. I love the shared POV, I love how stupid Brock is over her almost right from the beginning. I love the Loki of all of this. I love Brock’s back story. There’s just a lot to love here. So charmingly written that I instantly fell in love with this version of Brock and Darcy.
@sarahbeniel - Spring Training - Bucky/Darcy. Bucky’s POV is so convincingly male - his thoughts and motivations - his interactions with the guys and his musings on Darcy - I absolutely adore the Bucky voice in this. I get a goofy smile on my face just thinking about what an utter delight this story is.
@dresupi - Volcanic Like a Hot Spring - Brock/Darcy. Charming and funny with a thread of sweetness - but oh wow. So hot. *fans face* SO SO SO hot.
@ibelieveinturtles - Deal With the Devil - Brock/Darcy. Have I mentioned I love AUs? This made me grin like an idiot - and gave me a tingle in my tummy when Brock makes his final demand. I have a weakness for not-quite-redeemed Rumlow. Sue me. This is delightful!
@cchellacat - The Checkout - Bucky/Darcy. This is part of a larger collection of stories and there is a continuation later in the collection - but this piece as a stand alone is so powerful and moving. By all means, read the second part - but only after you sit a moment and really absorb the impact of this. In a world of heroes and villains - this is so tragic in it’s normalcy.
@grimeysociety - Death of a Marriage - Bucky/Darcy. Transcendent. I love AUs and this is amazing. There is so much detail and depth to this, it made my heart hurt in the best way. This is a beautifully broken love story.
@awww-brain-no - Down in New Orleans - Remy/Darcy. #1. There is not enough Remy/Darcy in the world. #2. I am soulmate trash and this is delicious. #3 I love Darcy’s relationship with Logan in this.
@chrissihr - My Two Front Teef - Bucky/Darcy. One of my favorite things about the MCU is the potential for Found Family dynamics - this is one of my favorite Found Family stories. There is so much to love here.
@zephrbabe - Dragon- Brock/Darcy/Bucky. Part of a larger work, but this is the chapter that keeps me up at night, thinking of all the things that could happen next. I love the way the world-building seems effortless and makes everything come alive. This is an OT3 (and an AU) that I would be so happy to see more of.
@leftennant - Rule Number One - Bucky/Darcy. I love AUs and this is a great AU. The description of Darcy’s first impression of Bucky, and then when you find out why it was so. Bucky’s family is awesome. SO AWESOME. I heart this story so hard.
@anniemar - Easy Chair - Bucky/Darcy. Friends to Lovers is one of my favorite tropes and this is done SO well. Poor clueless Bucky. Sam Wilson is the best. “Go get the booty.”
@wahwahwaffles - Left Behind - Bucky/Darcy/Steve. Vengeful!Darcy, Multi-personality Bucky. I love The Winter Solider, he makes me laugh inappropriately.
@higgsboshark - It Don’t Mean a Thing - Bucky/Darcy. The relationship build in this is fantastic - that moment in the coffee shop makes me absolutely giddy with joy - and that first kiss is a DOOZY!
@iamartemisday - LokiDay - Loki/Jane Foster. I think that this was the first MCU story I read. I came looking for fanfic after I saw Thor, and much to my surprise, though I ended the movie shipping Thor/Jane - once I read LokiDay I was totally on the Lokane train!
@nourgelitnius - Live Fast Die Young (Series) - Steve/Darcy. I love the imagery in this story, it’s lush and lyrical and it’s so dynamic that it serves as another character in the story. I find myself thinking about this story at the oddest moments and going back to re-read it. Also, I love AUs.
@anogete - Pulling Me Under - Bucky/Darcy. I love Darcy being extremely competent at something completely unexpected. - The chemistry in this is off the charts and the many and varied ways and places they take advantage of the chemistry is delightful.
@bjorkshirepudding - Standing Eight Count - Bucky/Darcy. No longer on Ao3 or hosted online - but this is one of my favorites because it helped excise a lot of negative feelings I had. Beautifully written AU.
@holdmecloseandfast - Grade A American Beef - Bucky/Darcy. Absolutely A+ relationship development, delicious UST, delightful RST, and I love the shared POV. Darcy’s family is a freaking delight. Just an absolute favorite!
@puffabilly - Witness - Clint/Darcy. One of my first Clint/Darcy reads and remains a favorite. That first kiss is a doozy!
@inkbert - Here I Am, and I Stand - Bucky/Darcy Gut-wrenching. I think this is closest I’ve ever come to actually hating Bucky. When I need a good cry, I can always rely on this story to do the trick.
@imogenpenn - Rivers and Roads - Clint/Darcy. Sweet and a little melancholy - this is a Fraction-style Clint who says so much with his silences. I love the way he’s there for Darcy in this and their developing relationship is beautiful.
@twistedingenue - The Coming Storm is Gonna be a Crazy Ride - Clint/Darcy. Another longtime favorite - that moment when Clint tells Darcy how he feels. *sigh* Still makes me swoon.
@hardboiledmeggs - In the Blue Dark - Bucky/Darcy. Has one of my favorite lines of dialogue of all time: "What are you gonna offer me next? Heroin and a bottle of high fructose corn syrup?"

Everyone on Earth agrees that the Heroes of Earth deserve to have all of the rewards possible and it is no secret that even the best heroes have their own darknesses inside, so the people of Earth set up a few Communities across the Globe for the Heroes of the World. In these Communities for Heroes, the Heroes are able to live out their darkest desires and fantasies, anything goes, no matter how sick, how twisted, how dark, thw1 Heroes can do anything they want in these Communities and the people of the World that the Heroes protect are happy to give the Heroes what and/or who they need to make the Heroes happy, including very young, very tiny, very helpless, children from Orphanages, Group Foster Homes and even straight from someone's womb if the mother decides she doesn't want to raise the baby. Some people even abandon their young children outside the gates of the Communities built for Heroes. And there is a lottery where if you but a ticket and your numbers get picked you could get the privilege of giving a specific Hero your child. All of this so that the Heroes of the World can vent their darkness and protect the world without the weight of their darkness on their shoulders.
