ANIMALS IN WAR 1914 - 1918
Object description: Animal Welfare: British humane societies such as the Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, also made important contributions to animal welfare. After the war, Mrs Dorothy Brooke founded the Brooke Hospital for Animals in Cairo in 1930. It was initially aimed to rescue and care for former British army horses which had been sold in Egypt after the war and which had subsequently suffered appallingly from overwork and lack of care. Dorothy Brooke is shown with some of the 5,000 horses which her hospital rescued in Egypt.

Queen Camilla’s Patronages
The Brooke Hospital for Animals (President from 01.11.2006)
Brooke is an international charity that protects and improves the lives of horses, donkeys and mules which give people in the developing world the opportunity to work their way out of poverty. We believe that animal suffering is preventable and that good animal welfare protects human livelihoods. For 600 million people in some of the poorest places in the world, 100 million of these animals are the backbone of communities and their best means of making a living. Without healthy working horses, donkeys and mules, they wouldn’t be able to put food on their tables, send their children to school or build better futures for themselves and their families. We work with owners, communities and policy makers to bring about lasting improvements to the lives of working animals. Brooke works hard to deliver significant and lasting change, even in some of the world’s most challenging areas. We use our expertise to train and support owners of horses, donkeys and mules, local vets, farriers, harness makers and animal traders to improve standards of care.
“As President of this unique charity, I am proud to tell you that the Brooke reaches more working horses, donkeys and mules than any other animal welfare charity. For over 80 years, the Brooke has been sharing its experience and expertise to improve the welfare of working equines around the world. I have witnessed the Brooke’s work for myself in Petra, Jordan and in 2013 I was able to meet and personally thank Brooke staff in India for their role in Uttarakhand, where the Brooke India team provided emergency relief to stranded equines in various pockets of the flooding disaster affected area.” - Queen Camilla

When Omar first meets you it’s because a young Ukrainian girl has been found bleeding out on someone’s lawn after being stabbed thirty times. She’s lucky to be alive, he’s told at the hospital while he waits for you to arrive. When he thinks of the nineteen bodies they’ve just found buried in the woods and the shallow grave Hailey had clawed her way out of he thinks luck had nothing to do with it. That girl is a fighter through and through.
When you appear, he isn’t prepared for just how pretty you are. You’ve tried to downplay it; no makeup, hair tied away from your face but you’re naturally striking. You’re wearing civvies, black jeans with battered Doc Martens, a light grey tunic top thrown over the top. You’re in the midst of clipping your badge to your hip when he approaches you.
“Sorry.” You greet him, raising your head to meet his eyes. “It was my day off.”
For a moment the entire world falls away and he’s completely captivated by you. This is what the Quran talks about, he thinks, when you meet your soulmate. There’s a sense of tranquillity, of peace. A familiarity that you can’t explain. That’s how he feels when he shakes your hand.
“Hanna Emery.” You introduce yourself. “Human Trafficking Division.”
Hanna
In Hebrew it means compassion.
You certainly live up to your namesake.
He hangs back during the interview. He’s new to the bureau, still finding his feet and he’s experiencing a lot of firsts during this case. Human trafficking is your world, something you’re well versed in he comes to discover as you question Hailey. The technique is different, tailored towards different aspects of the victim’s experience. There’s an emotional intelligence in you that he can’t even begin to fathom.
Through the course of the interview, you learn that Hailey and her sister were trafficked from the Ukraine through an Eastern European employment agency. They were from a small farming community. They each completed a test before participating in a video interview. They’d been ecstatic when they’d discovered they’d been selected for jobs in New York City.
“It’s a scam we see often,” You tell Omar in the aftermath when you’re comparing notes. “They target girls in rural communities, the ones that don’t know any better.”
The girls had been picked up at the airport in a van by three men Snake, Spider and Hog. They’d been transported to a townhouse before descending into what Hailey described as the depths of hell. Your demeanour changes when Hailey mentions the name Snake, it’s a subtle shift, a tension in your shoulders, your eyes flicking upwards.
“Who is he to you?” He’d asked you as he swiped his card over the payment feature of the vending machine. “Snake?”
You’re already tearing open the wrapper of the candy bar he’s just bought you because you’d had to skip out on lunch with a friend to cover his case. Omar figures it’s the least he can do.
“A monster.” You tell him. “I’ve been cleaning up his mess for almost two years now. The shit he’s done to these girls…”
You shake your head as you throw the rest of your half-eaten candy bar into the trash.
It’s when Hailey describes the extent of her abuse that Omar finds himself at a loss. She and her sister Brook were taken to the basement of a townhouse, raped for three days straight. That’s incomprehensible to him, the terror of it, the violation. He has three sisters, the thought of something like that happening to one of them…
It makes him sick.
“It’s a way of breaking them down, keeping them compliant.” You explain to Omar afterwards. “It destroys their hope, erodes their sense of person. They become an object to be used, a vessel for someone else’s pleasure.”
You pause, your fingers toying with the bracelet on your wrist. It’s woven fabric, black, white and red threads all interlocked in an Aztec pattern and secured with a tight knot. It’s a couple of years old, he thinks. He doubts you’ve taken it off since it was given to you.
“They call rape murder of the soul, it’s worse than death. With death there’s peace, an ending. With rape, the person you are is completely obliterated, you can pick up the fragments, but they don’t fit the same way they used to.”
It’s harrowing, hearing it described like that. You must have done thousands of these interviews, heard so many variations of the same story. He wonders if it wears on you, if it takes a little piece of your soul everytime you endure their suffering along with them.
“I’m not sure how you recover from something like that.” Omar says, rubbing his hand over the nape of his neck.
“Some don’t.” You say sadly, your arms crossing over your chest as you look through the window into Hailey’s room. “Hailey though, she’s strong. I think she’s one of the ones that make it.”
“Is it true what you said?” He asks quietly, his shoulder coming to rest against the wall. “Is it really one in five women who get sexually assaulted?”
You sigh as you tilt your head to look at him. He sees the truth of it in your eyes and it devastates him because that means it’s happened to someone that he knows, someone he cares about, and he isn’t sure what to do with that knowledge.
“Yea.” You say softly. “I’m afraid it is.”

Brooks opens her door and she is a mess, tears streaming down, face red, it’s heartbreaking and Luke can’t help but feel his heart breaking looking at her like that🥺
“hey hey, what’s wrong?” he asks gently, mat is lingering behind him.
“i was asleep,” she stutters out before crying again. “it’s okay, breathe with me. deep breath, hold it, and exhale. i can’t understand you if your crying sweetheart. you were asleep what happened?”
he watches her shake out her hands and take a second to compose herself. “the accident i just kept seeing it.” that’s all she’s able to get out before luke wraps his arms around her and she’s sobbing into his chest. “i’m going to get her water,” mat says gently before walking off.
“you gotta breathe brooks, you’re hyperventilating and will drive yourself to throw up.”
he soothes her and gets her to sit on her bed. he kneels down as she hands her head low. “i know you’re scared. but you’re not there anymore. you’re here in new york with me and mat. you’re in your bedroom, safe and sound, no car, no hospital, no ambulance, no rain. you’re awake and you’re here.” he picks up her hand, “see? squeeze my hand. you’re here baby. nowhere else.”
she starts calming down as mat returns with water. “hey b,” mat starts. “take some sips for us?” he offers the water and luke brushes her hair off her face before using his sleeve to wipe away her tears and snot. “do you want me to call mom or dad?” mat questions. “no,” she sniffled.
“okay, we don’t have to call them. we can just sit here with you, do you want anything? your stuffed animal or your blanket?” mat asks. she sucks in air shaking. “yeah,” she cries.
both boys work silently. mat gets her childhood stuffed animal from her shelf and luke grabs the blanket off her desk chair. “there you go, it’s okay,” luke coos.

introducing freya
Tumblr media
Freya Elisabeth Hischer was born on March 13, 2021 to her parents Nico Hischer and Eleanor Rose Brooks.
Nico and Eleanor childhood sweethearts and were in love for years, having got married before they moved to New Jersey and wanted to have their first child together but complications happened and Freya was coming seven weeks early before she was supposed to and the birth not only almost killed a preemie Freya but it killed Eleanor, leaving behind a heartbroken Nico.
Nico never once thought it was his daughters fault because it wasn’t and he wouldn’t ever blame her for something she had no control of and he knew his Eleanor is glad their daughter lived.
Eleanor’s family never approved of Nico and Eleanor’s relationship and when they heard of the death of their daughter they only blamed Freya leaving the commutation between Freya and her mothers side almost nonexistent.
Eleanor has a younger brother Caleb who moved to live with Eleanor and Nico the second he turned 18, moved there when Eleanor was four months pregnant and was very excited for his niece to come and was in the hospital when his sister died, he neither ever blamed Freya.
Caleb having knowing Nico since he was born always looked up to Nico as a older brother and following him in his passion of hockey, another thing his parents disapprove of. Caleb was drafted second overall in the 2020 NHl draft to the New Jersey Devils as a defenseman.
Nico, Caleb and Freya continued to live in the apartment Eleanor had picked out, Jack Hughes had moved into his friend’s apartment building and soon was joined with his daughter Axel.
Freya and Axel became fast friends even as a baby they easily babbled with each other and giggles together.
Freya being the older one was always more protective of her best friend and wanted to protect her from everything, especially from treatment Axel received from mother.
Freya and Axel are the opposite of people but the two fit extremely well with each other.
The two playing hockey with eachother their whole lives had made the two became an insane team on the ice and became the first two women in the NHL, Freya the first overall pick a year before and Axel the first overall pick the year joining each other on the same team.
Freya has always been very in tune with Axel and notice her anxious ticks and knows Axel feels the best on the ice so there’s been many times she had a gently grabbed Axels hands and took her to the rink laying with her till Axel felt better.
Nico always told Freya that her mother loved the stars so Freya likes to the stars as she would talk to her mother if she had the chance.
Freya and Axel have had the nicknames ace and space for just each other since they were young, Axel being ace and Freya being spade, from a young age all the way till their in the NHL especially when the two work together to score a goal it’s always the ace of spades scored.
Freya chose the number 11 because of Axel’s nickname ace which is number 1 in the deck of cards, and Axel choosing the number 66 as a reminder of the six months age difference between the two.
The six month age difference never bothered the two, they barely even remembered it until they realized Freya would get drafted a year before Axel and that year had the longest times they had been away from each other before Axel got drafted going to the same team as Freya.
Freya has always hate physical touch more and more as she grew up, some days she can’t handle any touch and she knows her best friend Axel loves touch so once in a while Freya can’t tolerate a quick hug or a head rested on her shoulder by Axel.
Freya had picked out a snow leopard stuff animal when Nico and her went to meet Axel for the first time and Axel has kept it since and while spray it with Freya’s perfume to cuddle the stuff animal to sleep better as Freya usually can’t handle cuddling up to Axel all night.
Freya and Axel are menaces together from a young age terrorizing anybody and anyone and nobody was safe from their pranks but them.

Chapter 3 pairing: Rhett Abbott x (eventual) female!reader, Luke Tillerson x Female!Reader. (reader's last name is Lawton. warnings: pregnancy, vomiting, mentions of cheating, mentions of dementia, slight spoilers to outer range. eventual: death, murder, fighting, excessive drinking, cheating, birth. synopsis: Rhett never cared much about others, except when it came to her. He thought that he had lost his chance years ago, but now she's back, engaged and pregnant to the wrong person. What happens when a cowboy falls for another man's girl?
Y/N had always hated the stupid animals hung up on the fireplace wall. Back when she was a girl, there were only two, maybe three of them hung up on display. Now, there was hardly any room to hang up even a squirrel. It made her uncomfortable, like their cold dead eyes were watching every single move that she made. She sipped her tea, keeping her eyes trained on the white owl in the corner as Luke was explaining to Sheriff Joy the buckle he had found behind the Pit Bar.
Y/N had told Luke that Trevor was making out with some blonde the last time she saw him. Luke didn’t fully believe it. It wasn’t unlike Trevor to go home with a buckle bunny from the bar, but it was unlike him to not tell either one of his brothers where he was going. Once Luke dropped Y/N back at the Tillerson land, he went back to the Pit Bar, and that’s when he found the buckle and the blood splatters on the gravel. Y/N heard him come home and get Billy, and the spinning of his tires as he sped out of the driveway and over to the Abbotts. She watched from the bedroom window his headlights draw near to the property. She had hardly slept as she paced the bedroom floor in nothing but one of Luke’s t-shirts waiting for him to come back.
“What do you want me to do with this?” Sheriff Joy asked him, holding the buckle.
“Investigate!” Luke said, pointing to the buckle, “Look, there’s blood right there.”
“You know damn well that could be anything. And as sheriff-”
“Acting sheriff,” Luke said, cutting her off. Y/N sighed and set her mug down on the coffee table and stood up, walking over to them. Unlike Luke, Y/N actually liked Sheriff Joy. Joy was the one who made the call about Chad in the middle of the street. Instead of arresting him like Sheriff Burt wanted to do, Joy talked to Chad and got him calmed down.
“Listen Sheriff, we know how this looks, but this isn’t like Trevor,” Y/N said, putting a hand on Luke’s arm, “Just please keep an eye on it?”
“I can do that Y/N,” Sheriff Joy smiled at the woman, “I can keep a lookout for anything that may seem suspicious.”
Luke scoffed and walked away back towards the office. Y/N jumped as the heavy wooden door slammed shut and she gave Joy a shy smile as she led her to the front door. She watched as the squad car left the driveway, and closed the door leaning her back up against it. Her mind was spinning, there were only two people she could think of who had something to do with Trevor’s disappearance and the blood on the buckle, and that was Brooks and Rhett.
— — —
“Twice a day, every six hours, and no, you can’t wash these down with alcohol,” Y/N said as she handed the prescription to her patient. The older male tipped his hat before exiting the waiting room.
There was only one medical facility within a 60 mile radius of Wabang, and it happened to be the county hospital. It was a small building with a barely functional ER, and a walk-in clinic. It made do for the population that was around, most of the folks were anti-doctor anyway and only going if they could see bone or where hacking up a lung. The doctors that worked in the hospital were either middle-aged women with kids in the school area, or old men who had been working there since the seventies. Y/N was thankful to get a job so close to home, instead of driving an hour to the big hospital in the city.
“Hey, we’re going to grab a bite to eat at the dinner, want to join?” One of her nurses, Michelle asked.
“Sure,” Y/N smiled, and stood up from her desk, “Doctor Keith still in?”
“Yeah,” Michelle nodded, “How’s baby doing?”
“Well the morning sickness has finally somewhat seemed to fade. Still get terrible headaches and my back hurts like a bitch,” She said, as she put her coat on and walked by the elder physician’s office, “Going to lunch sir, we’ll be back.”
“Sounds good,” Doctor Keithe said, “Oh, I got that number for that midwife over in Alice County that you wanted to see. She’s the best, and the closest that we got.”
“Thank you sir,” Y/N smiled and took the sticky note from his outstretched hand. Y/N was a tad apprehensive about living so far away from a proper labor and delivery center. The hospital in Wabang could deliver a baby if it was an absolute emergency, but most expectant mothers drove the hour to the city to have their babies there.
The bell above the door dinged as Y/N and Michelle walked through the door. The waitress at the counter smiled at the two of them, and told them to see themselves. Rhett looked up from the cup of cooling coffee in front of him, to catch Y/N’s smile. He had noticed since telling Luke about the pregnancy, she wasn’t hiding her bump as much. The tight black shirt she wore accented the small bump and Rhett could remember the feeling of it under his hand.
“Someone’s staring at you,” Michelle said as she grabbed the menu and started looking at it, “Oh, he’s-”
“Y/N,”
“Rhett,” Y/N said, greeting Rhett. Michelle bit back a laugh as she looked between the two of them, “What are you doing-”
“Wanted to see how you were after the uh, other night.”
“I’m fine, thanks for checking. How are you though? You were the one fighting.”
Rhett chuckled and rubbed the back of his neck, “Yeah I uh, bruised my hand.” Rhett held his hand in front of him, flexing it in and out of a fist.
“Why don’t you come by the clinic in like, an hour?” Michelle said, “Y/N can check that out for ya.”
“It’s really no-”
“Her schedule is free for the rest of the day. She can take a look to make sure nothing is broken. Can’t have the possible county champ riding with a busted hand.”
“Oh, I’d have to take down Brooks to get that,” Rhett gave his classic half smile, “If it’s really no trouble, I would like to get it checked out.”
“It’s no trouble, Rhett,” Y/N said, and looked up at his beautiful blue eyes.
“Perfect, uh, enjoy your lunch,” Rhett said, and made his way towards the front door. Y/N watched with her eyes as Rhett walked across the street with a little extra pep in his step. She smiled down at her menu, her eyes landing on the ring on her finger.
“I know what you’re thinking,” Michelle whispered, leaning in close, “But it’s just looking at a patient’s hand, ain’t nothing to it.”
“A patient I used to be in love with,” Y/N said, looking at her, “It just. . . he touched my belly the other day and I got this, like flutter feeling in my body like I was sixteen again, watching Taylor Lautner take his shirt off to wipe blood off of Kristen Stewart's forehead. But when Luke did it. . . it felt strange. Maybe it’s just hormones. I mean, I had an episode with my father and Rhett was just there and-”
“You don’t have to explain your feelings to me,” Michelle said, “I just want you to do what’s right for you.”
Y/N nodded and smiled as the waitress walked over to them. She couldn’t help the sinking feeling in her chest that what she was doing with Rhett was wrong, even if it was just taking a look at his injured hand. Luke didn’t like Rhett, he had made that clear time and time again. Rhett had even been a topic of an argument between them a time or two. Y/N had always had a crush on Rhett, it had started when they were young. Rhett was the only boy who seemed to actually see Y/N for her, and not because she was Brooks’ little sister or someone who would get half the Lawton Ranch.
After they ate lunch, and walked back to the hospital, Y/N waited in the nurses station area for Rhett to show up. She did have a mostly clear afternoon, except an appointment up in the city for an ultrasound. Luke was supposed to drive her, but he had been radio silent all day. She sighed as her call went directly to Luke’s voicemail box. She didn’t even bother to leave a message, just hung up and slammed her phone down.
“Hey, Rhett’s in room four,” One of the nurses said, and Y/N nodded.
She took the file from the nurse’s hand, and walked down the hallway towards the room. Rhett looked up from his hands as Y/N walked in the room. He swung his feet slightly as he sat on the exam table, and gave her a smile, but quickly dropped it seeing the look on her face.
“What’s wrong?” Rhett asked.
“Nothing, just tired,” Y/N said and looked around the exam room, pulling out different tapes and stuff to tape Rhett’s hand up.
“Nah, not buying that shit,” Rhett said, “Forgetting I’ve known you since you were a young girl. Tell me what’s wrong.”
“When I told Luke the other day, he promised me that he was going to. . . be there and all this shit, but his mind is so clogged up with Trevor missing and the shit with your land,” Y/N sighed, and grabbed Rhett’s bruised hand, looking it over. He hissed as she played with his fingers, bending and moving them to see if they were broken, “I have an appointment at the big hospital in the city, he’s supposed to drive me since my truck is in the shop. I’m going to have to cancel-”
“I’ll take you,” Rhett said,
“Rhett, I can’t ask you to do that. Your dad will kill me if-”
“I want to,” Rhett said, and Y/N looked down at the roll of ace wrap in her hands, “What time you done?”
“Now actually,” Y/N grabbed a pair of scissors and cut the wrap, securing it around Rhett’s hand, “Wiggle your fingers for me.” Rhett does as she says and moves his fingers, “Keep them wrapped, and ice that hand. I’m guessing you have painkillers at home?”
“Ya know how us bull riders do, girl,” Rhett smirked and Y/N shook her head, and began cleaning up her supplies. Rhett scratched at the back of his neck as he watched her, “This uh. . . this appointment is uh, is everything okay?”
Rhett could hardly remember when Rebecca was pregnant with Amy, mainly because he was so heartbroken about Maria and was just getting into the life of bull riding with Brooks. Perry had also lived in his own place in town when Rebecca was around. Rhett could remember whenever she came over, her stomach seemed to double in size until she came home with a newborn baby.
“Yeah, everything is okay,” Y/N said, as she filled out some paperwork, “It’s just a checkup, they’ll do an ultrasound, measurements, maybe some blood work. Doctor Keith could do it, but my midwife is at the big hospital and it’s easier to just go there and get all the prenatal stuff done.”
“Midwife?” Rhett whispered to himself. It was another thing he was going to store to memory until he could get home and google what a midwife was.
“Ready?” Y/N asked him, and Rhett nodded, standing up from the exam table and placing his hat on his head. He followed behind her as she stopped to grab her coat and bag, saying goodbye to her coworkers and Doctor Keith. She checked her phone one more time but sighed in defeat seeing that there were no messages from Luke.
“Come on,” Rhett said gently, seeing the look of disappointment on her face, “We got a long drive.”
— — —
The drive was filled with laughter from stories of Y/N’s days at college and from Rhett’s time doing rodeos with Brooks. The two had nearly five years of being apart, both leading different lives. Y/N went to a college in Kansas, studying biology, joined a sorority and then went to nursing school. Rhett worked on the ranch and doing odd end jobs for Chad with Brooks, and he rode bulls on the weekends and often got too drunk afterwards with Brooks. Rhett loved seeing the smile on her face as she tilted her head back in laughter and wiped the tears from under her eyes.
“Stop! Oh my god, that sounds just like Brooks!” Y/N laughed, “Oh! I’m sorry baby,” Y/N gently placed a hand on her growing bump, rubbing it slightly.
“What’s wrong?” Rhett asked, concern filling his voice as he looked between her and the road.
“They started kicking the other day, and haven't stopped since,” Y/N said, “They’re not big enough to really see anything on the outside, but I can feel it, and Brooks could too.”
“I remember I used to be scared to touch Rebecca’s belly, it looked like a thing from Alien when Amy would kick and move. Perry was obsessed with it.”
Y/N laughed and looked down at her belly, her glistening ring catching her peripheral vision. Even though Perry had his faults, he was a good dad to Amy. Even with all the things he had been through this past year with Rebecca missing, having to move back in with his parents, Amy seemed happy and healthy. Perry was very attentive to anything she was doing, whether it be a school science project or a dance recital.
“Do you think. . . Do you think Luke will be a good dad?” Y/N said, not taking her eyes off her ring.
“I mean, yeah,” Rhett shifted in his spot, “I think it’s a thing you have to learn. I don’t know much about all that instinctual stuff, but I think a lot of parenting is a learning thing. I think he’s got some learning to do.”
“I hope you’re right,” She sighed leaning back in her seat, “Sometimes I feel like I made a mistake. Not saying the baby is a mistake but maybe, sticking around with Luke was.”
Rhett didn’t even know how to answer that. Of course he thought her staying with Luke was a mistake, but what was she to do now? She was set to become a parent with him and eventually get married. Some of the people in Wabang were set in their ways, and Rhett was no stranger to the whispers and stares of the older folks about him, he could only imagine what she was going through. He knew that staying with Luke was to save her reputation, to save her family’s reputation. She was the one who made it out, the perfect child. Brooks had been in trouble as a young adult, their mother drank herself to death, and Chad was losing his mind. But Y/N Lawton, she was the straight A student, the future doctor, the one who would come back for Christmas and drive a BMW that everyone would stare at. But now she was pregnant, and unwed.
Rhett sighed as he pulled into the parking lot of the hospital and put his truck in park. He turned his body to face Y/N, who was still looking at her ring, “Listen, I know Luke has had his problems, but he’s changed. He’ll come around, I know he will. He’s not gonna leave you out to dry. He’s a good guy, Y/N, probably one of the best ones you’ll find in Wabang.”
“You said the other night you don’t bring much to the table, but I think that’s a lie,” Y/N said, turning her head to look at him. A strand of his dark blonde hair fell in front of his face, and Y/N softly pushed it back behind his ear, “Cause I can’t think of any other guy in Wabang who would drive an hour to take some pregnant lady to a doctor's appointment.”
“Brooks.”
“Yeah, if he was getting a blowjob after it,” Rhett chuckled and Y/N smiled and looked at the time on the dashboard, “I should head in.”
“Yeah,” Rhett said, and opened his door.
“What are you doing?” Y/N furrowed her eyebrows as she reached out to grab his arm.
“Going with you?”
“I- No, Rhett, you don’t have to.”
“I want to,” Rhett gave her a smile and Y/N removed her hand, and got out of the truck.
Rhett’s blue eyes were wide as he looked around the waiting room of the OB clinic. He had never seen so many pregnant women in various stages of their pregnancy. He couldn’t even fathom what it would be like to carry an extra 15-20 pounds on him for months. His eyes nearly popped out of his head as he watched one woman be wheeled out from the back of the clinic.
“Are you gonna get that big?” Rhett whispered to Y/N. Y/N looked up and smiled at the mom in front of her.
“Possibly,” Y/N whispered back and Rhett felt a shiver go down his spine. Y/N giggled softly as she finished filling out paperwork and waited for her name to be called, “You’ve been reading those parenting books, you tell me Doctor Rhett.”
“That kinda has a nice ring to it,” Rhett smiled.
When her name was called, Rhett stood up first, and offered his hand out to pull her up. Y/N smiled at him as he gently put his hand on the small of her back and they followed the nurse down to the exam room. Rhett was surprised how spacious the exam rooms were compared to the ones at the hospital in Wabang. Y/N sat on the table and answered the nurse’s questions, while she took her vitals. The nurse explained what they would be checking for at this appointment, and Rhett pretended like he knew what they were saying. He made mental notes to google everything that they were saying after the appointment.
“Alright, Paula will be in a bit. No blood tests today, thankfully,” The nurse said and smiled at Rhett and Y/N before leaving the room.
“So you like. . . understood what she said?” Rhett asked shyly, and Y/N giggled.
“Yes, I did,” Y/N said, and looked at the various posters around the room, “Everything is going okay. Paula is my midwife, and she’ll take measurements, listen to the baby’s heartbeat, and take an ultrasound. Standard stuff.”
Rhett nodded his head, like he understood what she was explaining. His eyes looked over the posters in the room, widening at how graphic some of them were. The one with a baby being delivered, made his stomach churn. He had delivered cows and horses before, he wasn’t afraid to pickup and hold a brand new philly in his arms. But there was something about the image of a human baby being born that didn’t sit right in his stomach. He looked over at Y/N, as she scrolled through her phone, laying back on the exam table, and absentmindedly running her hand over her small bump. Even doing literally nothing, she was beautiful.
Rhett finally understood what his mom said when she would refer to the pregnant ladies at church as “glowing.” Y/N always seemed to have a natural glow to her, but now that she was carrying a baby in her belly, she seemed to have a golden halo following her around wherever she went. Rhett could hardly keep his blue eyes off of her when she was around. How Luke didn’t notice her “pregnancy glow” was beyond Rhett’s knowledge.
“Knock, knock!” A chipper voice said, as the door to the room opened, and two women walked in. Y/N sat up a bit, handing her phone to Rhett, who took it and sat it on the chair next to him, “Y/N, you’re looking better than the last time I saw you!”
“I feel better than the last time we saw each other,” Y/N giggled, “Rhett this is Paula, my midwife, and MaryAnn, my doula.”
“Nice to meet you,” Rhett said, giving them both a small and shaking the two women’s hands.
Paula gave Y/N a look and she shook her head. During her first appointment, Y/N had spilled it all, about how she was engaged to a man who didn’t know she was pregnant and she wasn’t sure if she could tell him. Y/N didn’t know if it was because of the hormones, or because Paula and MaryAnn gave her the same vibes as her mother once did, but it was easy to tell them everything.
“Alright, well, friends are good to have!” Paula smiled, and walked over to the counter, and started running through the prenatal exam.
Rhett watched as MaryAnn helped Y/N lay flat on her back, and pull her shirt up. His blue eyes went straight to the small protrusion in her stomach. Her bump looked even bigger than it did last week. MaryAnn pressed on her stomach, trying to get a measurement of where the fundus was at.
“Does that hurt the baby?” Rhett asked, leaning slightly forward to watch what MaryAnn was doing with her hands, and Y/N looked over at him, “I mean, all that pushing and stuff.”
MaryAnn smiled down at you, before turning to Rhett, “No, it doesn’t hurt the baby. Trying to get a measurement on where the fundus is at. It's a part of the uterus. Next, I’m going to measure her belly, and see where we are sitting for overall percentage.”
“Oh okay,” Rhett nodded and sat back in his chair, seeming happy with her response. Y/N couldn’t help but feel her heart flutter at his concern. MaryAnn and Paula shared a knowing look, as MaryAnn read the measurements she took.
“Alright, looks like you’re sitting right at the perfect place we want you to be,” Paula said, and closed the file, walking over to the ultrasound machine, “Let’s get to the fun part, seeing the baby.”
Y/N smiled and looked over at Rhett, who gave her a smile in return. His eyes quickly moved from her, to her belly, and then to the screen. He let out a soft gasp, as Paula placed the ultrasound wand on Y/N’s belly, and the image of the small baby in her uterus appeared in front of him. He hadn’t ever seen an ultrasound before, just the images of after when Rebecca was pregnant with Amy. It was much cooler to see it live, Rhett could see the baby moving around, and even the beating of their heart.
“Alright, let's listen to that heartbeat,” Paula said, clicking a button and a loud whooshing sound filled the office. Rhett, nor Y/N had realized that he had moved closer to her, leaning down by her head to watch the screen closer. He was in complete awe that what he was seeing on the screen was what was growing inside of Y/N.
“Are you okay?” Y/N said softly, looking up at Rhett.
“Huh? Yeah, I’m fine,” Rhett said, looking down at her. She lifted her hand up, and wiped a tear from his cheek, “Shit, I’m sorry.”
“It’s okay. I cried during my first ultrasound too,” She responded.
“It’s just. . . that’s really cool,” Rhett said, giving her his classic half smile. Paula smiled softly at the two of them, before taking and printing some pictures.
Paula got Y/N set up for her next ultrasound, and gave her another package of prenatal vitamins. Rhett couldn’t wipe the smile off his face as they got back in his truck or during the whole ride back to Wabang. Y/N looked over the ultrasound picture, pointing out different features and showing them to Rhett. Rhett asked her about all the things that Paula and MaryAnn had said, and Y/N did her best to clarify it for him. For once in his life, Rhett wished he paid more attention in anatomy and biology class in high school.
“So the next one, they’ll be able to know the gender?” Rhett asked, as he turned on the gravel road towards the Lawton ranch.
“You are kinda obsessed with knowing what I’m having,” Y/N giggled.
“Gotta know if I need to buy a tiara or a cowboy hat.”
“Hey! Little girls can have cowboy hats too.”
“Well obviously. I gotta know if I gotta get one with a-” Rhett’s smile dropped the second he pulled into the hospital parking lot and saw Luke’s and Brooks trucks parked at the entrance to the Lawton driveway. They both looked pissed, as Luke was staring down Rhett’s truck and Brooks was staring down Luke, “Want me to stay?” Rhett asked softly.
“It’s probably better if you don’t,” Y/N said barely above a whisper. She felt her throat constrict with tears as she looked down at the ultrasound picture.
“He’s not gonna hurt you, not with Brooks here. I atleast feel better about leaving you knowing that he’s right there.”
Y/N turned her head and looked at Rhett, “Thank you, for everything. I’ll see you around.”
Rhett nodded his head, as Y/N got out of his truck, and slowly walked over to where Luke was waiting. Rhett watched for a moment as Luke said something to her, and Brooks walked up between them. Luke pushed Brooks hand off his shoulder, and pointed Y/N in the direction of his truck. She kept her head down as she walked towards the passenger seat of Luke’s truck. She didn’t even glance back towards Rhett, which made his heart ache. Luke hardly let her back hit the seat, as he started up the truck, turning the wheel quickly and leaving a cloud of dust as he drove away from the ranch. Rhett pulled up his truck towards where Brooks was standing, watching the truck leave. He rolled the window down and leaned over the side.
“I don’t know what you’re doing with her,” Brooks said, not taking his eyes off the retreating truck, “But for once. . . back off.”
“You and I both know I can’t do that,” Rhett’s blue eyes looked back at his steering wheel. Out of the corner of his eye, he caught sight of the black and white photo she had left on the bench seat of his truck.
“I know you can’t,” Brooks sighed, and turned back towards his truck, getting in it and leaving Rhett alone with his thoughts.

The party was in full swing on the sunny, It was now the only ship still docked, the others had taken off long ago so it was just the straw hat crew and the Doctor all having a blast. Brook was playing music while Luffy, Nami, Usopp and Chopper dances. Franky and Robin sat together drinking and laughing while watching them but you noticed the Doctor leaning against the wall with a small smile. You've been keeping an eye on him so he doesn't leave without saying goodbye but so far it seems he's enjoying himself too much to leave making you relax a little more. Zoro's drinking yet another mug of beer while Sanji sits on his lap watching the group dance, you rub the cooks leg while sitting next to the two, Zoro's other arm around your waist. Prying your eyes away form the Doctor you look at Sanji and Zoro the two have smiles on their faces while watching and laughing at Luffy swinging Chopper around. With a smile you place your head on Zoro's shoulder feeling his arm tighten around your waist before placing a kiss on your forehead "He doesn't join in much does he?" Zoro comments looking from the Doctor then back to you "He's not used to this kind of thing. He's partied a few times but nothing this close nit" You look up at the swordsman still resting your head on his shoulder "So he did used to party?" Sanji asks taking your hand and interlocking your fingers with his.
With a small laugh you nod remembering the very few times the Doctor let loose and had fun "It was rare but it would only really happen when he drank too much. He acted more like a party animal" Zoro lets out a chuckle at your words, he'd love to see the time lord get wasted and go all out but the man hasn't even touched a bottle yet. "Maybe he just needs a push" Sanji shrug's laying his head on Zoro's shoulder who places a kiss on the cooks head. Foot steps approaching get all three of you to look up but relax when seeing its only the Doctor, the man looking down at the three of you with his hands in his pockets "Can i join?" The smile on the Doctors face makes you smile too patting the grass next to you as your boys nod at him and flash him a simple smile, your glad there's no more hard feelings between everyone. "Come on wallflower" You joke watching the time lord sit next to you looking over at the dancing crew members "is it always like this?" You nod at his question but Sanji shrugs before looking over at Luffy and Usopp dancing while Nami sways with Chopper in her arms "Luffy's always been hyper but it seems he's a little more party crazy tonight" The cook laughs earning a chuckle off Zoro who puts his empty mug down and wraps and arm around Sanji's waist "A little? I think he's just happy to see something no one else has" The swordsman looks from Sanji to you rubbing his thumb over your hip "That's true i guess. I think its going to be a long night" You giggle a little laying your head back on the swordsman's shoulder.
The Doctor looks from the three of you to up at the sky seeing the bright stars and glowing half moon, sights like these never get old "Robin showed me your star and planet charts, there very good. Even the ones you haven't been too are amazing" The compliment makes you look over at him with a smile but you couldn't take all the credit so you nudge his shoulder getting him to look at you "I had a good teacher" You compliment back making the Doctor shake his head "Don't sell yourself short... your already short enough" You slap the mans arm making him grab it and groan in pain "Asshole, i was being nice" You try to hold back your laugh but Zoro can't hold his laughing into Sanji's shoulder trying his best to muffle it at least. "And what are you laughing at?" You glare at the swordsman who continues to laugh pulling the cook more between you and him "Hay don't use me as a shield, moss head" Sanji bonks the green haired man on the head earning a groan but the Swordsman still hold the cook between you and him "Coward" you and Sanji booth comment as you cross your arms over your chest, a laugh behind you gets your attention turning to see the Doctor with a big smile and holding his stomach, it's been so long since you've heard him laugh like this, with actual joy.
Standing form where your sitting catches the three men's attention all looking up at you as you turn to the Doctor "Come on we're gonna dance" You hold your hand out to the brown haired man who looks at you in slight shock "No, i don't dance" He starts to say but you glare down at him making the time lord gulp "I taught you how to dance now get your ass up, you better not have forgotten" The Doctor sighs and turn to Zoro and Sanji to see a smile on their faces, seeing there not mad makes him feel better taking you up on your demand so stands up and takes your hand "Be warned this body has two left feet" The Doctor comments as you drag him over to the others as Brook starts playing a new song "Excuses, excuses" You laugh as he spins you around with one hand and starts swaying with you "Hay you came to join" Luffy calls out with a big smile but Nami grabs him and pulls him away knowing you and the Doctor haven't had a moment alone since you came back. You flash her a thankful smile before looking up the Doctor who's paying way too much attention to his own feet trying not to step on yours "You've forgotten?" You ask making him jump slightly "No, i haven't its just... your usually the one that leads" Rolling your eyes with a laugh you take the lead The doctor becoming a lot better while following you "You had no problem when dancing with Jude the princess of Cheem" Your comment gets him to sigh and look up from his feet "Yea but your different" The Doctor's eyes lock with yours showing he means what he says.
Confused you continue to dance not really paying attention to the music. "Different how?" You finally ask since he didn't elaborate, the man looks over your shoulder staring at the wall as not to look at you "You know me better than anyone.. Even after I've changed you still treat me the same, you tell me off but also encourage me. You keep me grounded and when you kissed me i really was shocked because" He stops before looking down at you to see a confused and worried face. You were hoping he wouldn't say anything like i love you or i want to be with you, your hands tighten on his coat trying to tell him not to say it. You don't see him that way, you never did and that kiss wasn't you. "I don't see you that way Y/N... I love you but not in that way" Relief flows over you at his words and your hands slowly loosen on his coat "I'm glad you said that, for a second you had me scared" You let out a nervous laugh along with the Doctor who pulls you into a hug "When you said it was like kissing your dad i.... you meant it rights? i don't want to freak you out but i'v known you for so long and I love you like a daughter because thats what you are to me" Tears well up in your eyes as you hug him back tighter letting the tears fall while burring your face in his shoulder "You asshole. Making me cry.... I love you too Dad" At your words the Doctors breath hitches in his throat, he didn't think you would say anything like that, a tear slips down his cheek as he smiles and rubs your back.
It took you a while to calm down but when you do you wipe the tears from your face and pull the Doctor away so you can see his face. With a small laugh you use your sleeve to wipe his wet cheek "Promise me. you won't leave without saying goodbye" You whisper holding up your pinkie finger the Doctor gladly taking it with a smile "I promise, i plan on leaving tonight after your captains goes to sleep" The man leans in to whisper to you so the nearby Luffy can't hear before placing a light kiss on your forehead "You've found some good people Y/n, i'm so proud of you" Lightly punching the Doctors shoulder you pull away fully and wipe your cheek "If you keep saying stuff like that i'm gonna cry again" You glare crossing your arms over your chest earning a sigh and a pat on the head from the brown haired man "But i mean it, you've done great plus those two love you a lot." The Doctor gestures to Zoro and Sanji who are still sitting together away from you all "I know they'll take care of you and you'll take care of them." You smile at his words looking over at your boys before looking back at the Doctor "Ok enough sappy talk back to dancing" You hold out your hand for him only to earn a sigh in response "Wouldn't you prefer dancing with Zoro or Sanji" The Doctor groans not wanting to dance anymore and embarrass himself.
Looking over at Sanji and Zoro you let a sly smile show "I think i will" The Doctor smiles and laughs lightly in relief about to walk away but you grab his arm "But that doesn't mean you get to go back to being a wallflower. Hay Luffy" You call over to your Captain who runs over with a wide smile "Please No" The Doctor whispers to you as you pull him over to meet the Captain half-way "The Doctor wanted to join you but he's too shy to ask" Luffy laughs at your comment and takes the Doctor's arm that you hold out for him "No i'm good" The Doctor try's to say while trying to stop being pulled away by the much stronger captain "Come on, it'll be fun" As Luffy runs off with The time lord you can't help but laugh and wave them off, The doctors not used to this kind of high energy enjoyment but you hope he'll have some kind of fun. Walking back to your two boys they look up at you with a concerned look but your smile makes him feel less worried "Everything ok?" Zoro asks holding his hand out for you to take but when you grab it you don't let him pull you into him "Everything's good, but he differently forgot how to dance even though he refuses to admit it." You laugh a little seeing a smile appear in Sanji's face who stands up form Zoro's lap and bows a little holding out his hand for you "My lady, would you care to dance?" The cook asks hoping he can satisfy your dancing needs "Yes, i would kind sir" You take Sanji's hand before looking at Zoro who sighs standing as well and kissing your hand "Fine I'll dance too"
Sanji leads you both back over to the others taking your hips pulling you into him letting your arms take his shoulders while Zoro takes your waist form behind. The three of you moving together swaying and stepping Sanji leading the both of you. Looking over at the Doctor, Zoro lets out a laugh and puts his forehead against your back "I thought you taught him how to dance" The Swordsman laughs placing his head on your shoulder causing you to look over at the Doctor, who's dancing very awkwardly with nami who soon hands the man off to Luffy who pulls the time lord around "Oh gods" You laugh hearing Sanji and Zoro join in. "Hay Doctor" You yell over getting his attention, the Doctor looking over at you three with a look that says please help me but how can you stop your captain when he looks so happy. "Take notes, This is how you lead" You wrap your arms around Sanji's neck letting the Cook guide you and Zoro seeming to make the Doctor scowl at you "Thank you my love" Sanji kisses your cheek then your lips which you lean into. The three of you dance for a little until Chopper runs over with a big smile "Hay buddy, what's up?" Zoro asks pulling away form you to look down at the reindeer "I was hoping to join you, i love dancing with the others but there still so hyper" Chopper rubs the back of his head a light blush appearing under his fur.
"If your tired then maybe you should sleep, it's been a long day" Sanji looks down at Chopper his hands still on your waist but the reindeer shakes his head, you know what he really wants, but he's too shy to ask. "Do you want sleep in our room?" You ask making the little deer look up at you in shock, its like you read his mind. It was late and by now he would be going to bed, the only reason why he wouldn't is because he didn't want to sleep in his own bed. "W-well, i don't want to be alone so, i-i was going to wait until you guys went to bed" Chopper looks down nervous to talk about it but Zoro chuckles and places a hand on the reindeer's head "We're not heading to bed yet but you can stay in our bed now if you want" Chopper looks up as Zoro kneels down. "Honestly don't tell Luffy but where waiting until The Doctor leaves tonight." Sanji whispers down after making sure Luffy isn't close enough to hear, Chopper nods seeming to understand but still looks a little shy so you pull away form Sanji and pick up the little deer "Your so cute when your tired. How about i take you to bed and tuck you in. I'm sure we won't be long" You smile seeing the little deer squirm in your arms at your compliment "That doesn't make me happy at all but I'll let you do it since your a friend" The three of you can't help but let out a small laugh at the reindeer's words. "Night chopper" Sanji pats the reindeer's head as Zoro stands up and takes the cooks other hand "Night bud"
Chopper waves at them as you walk to your room holding the reindeer in your arms. "Are you sure it's ok to sleep when your not here?" Chopper asks as you walk into the bedroom and turn on the light "It's fine, plus you'll keep the bed warm for us" walking over to the bed you take Choppers back pack and hat placing them on a chair nearby as he gets under the covers, but he still seems very nervous about something. "Are you scared of something?" You ask sitting on the edge of the bed looking down at the sleepy reindeer "No, its just... I'm worried when i wake up you'll be gone" With a sad sigh you lean down a place a kiss on Choppers forehead "I'm not going anywhere unless it's with this crew. I love the Doctor and yes i miss the sights but I'd rather be here. I can't imagine being anywhere else" Chopper sniffles before hugging you tight trying not to cry again while you rub his back "You mean it? You won't leave with him?" You nod laying him back down and covering him up before holding out your Pinkie "I promise, i won't leave this crew" With a smile the little reindeer takes your pinkie finger and nods knowing you will keep that promise. Placing a kiss on his head you tuck him in and then head to the door "Good night Chopper" You whisper turning off the light and walking outside.

I like to imagine how each of the temples look
Robins are large library’s, her followers gather and share knowledge as a teaching, most are nomadic since ohan
Frankys are workshops with his followers create and build machines.
Ussops are green house and small library’s filled with story books and fables. His followers tend to plants and tell children stores
Nami temples are ment for studying the weather and mapping out the world, there are many maps and one giant globe. Her followers study rain patterns and weather anomalies as well as create maps.
Sanjis temples are kitchens. His followers cook food and give it to those how are hungry.
Jinbes temples are located near or in the ocean. Lots of sea plants.
Brooks temples are full of music with large windows and skylights to show of the night sky. His followers are active at night where they sing great songs to people.
Luffys temples are like brooks, but sun themed and his followers help Carrie his themes of freedom and work to help those in need of it.
Choppers temples are hospitals for people and animals. His followers treat those who need it.
Zoros temples are like gyms and dojos. His followers train in the art of battle. They protect those who need protection.
I love all of theseeee!!!!!!
Luffy's specifically sounds kind of like the temple Dragon runs. What if he's a priest AND a revolutionary in this au???
I feel like Luffy doesn't have a lot of temples. Sure he has a lot of followers, but he doesn't like those stuffy people that use "his will" to control others. Also, he doesn't really like buildings because it's tedious to keep them lighten inside. He mostly just has stone alters that lower class people build and he's grateful for so surrounds them in sunflowers and has sparrows greet those who visit. There are a few made of carved stone to look like a rock with a strawhat on it and a sun emblem on the front - one of these is what Ace and Sabo stole.
This also means Luffy has the audacity to just walk into any other of the gods' temples without asking. Its a bit rude but most of them don't mind. Honestly Luffy just Showing Up before mortals' eyes becomes so common post-gt that pretty much everyone knows someone that's seen him. He's less of a god and more of a mixture between cryptid and annoying younger cousin to The Whole Dimension, but with a lot more god powers than he really should have

Saw a "Strawhats as Percy Jackson houses" post and it pissed me off so badly I'm making my own.
Luffy: legacy born to Dragon, the World's Worst criminal, son of Garp, the Hero of the Marines, who we will discuss later. That said, given how Luffy is, who Dragon is, and the Will of D in general, I think Eris, goddess of Strife is a good one.
Zoro: a dignified warrior with strong "fuck around and find out" energy. If he's not drinking, he's napping, and if he's not doing either of those, he's training. Textbook son of Ares (the post was actually right about this)
Sanji: his whole story falls apart without Judge and Sora, and yet, who's to say Sora has to be his bio mom? Son of Athena, who, fascinated with Judge's attempts to perfect life, saw fit to help. Sora gives birth to mundane (for a given value of mundane, they're still genetically enhanced) triplets. Athena is simultaneously proud and disappointed in him, because he's so smart, but then he's so stupid
Usopp: the original post said Hephaestus, and while I don't think that's inaccurate, we can do better. Usopp is the skill monkey of the crew. Before somebody comes along to specifically do something, he's the one doing it. He's the de facto shipwright and musician before those spots are filled, and even after, he's the de facto trickster. In Arlong Park, when Luffy describes Usopp's role, it's not that he can shoot from long distances, it's that he can lie. So I'm saying Hermes kid.
Nami: this one's hard to say. One of the simplest backstories, and yet, such a multifaceted character. Navigator. Cartographer. Thief. I almost wanna put her in Hermes with Usopp, but that feels like cheating. Still, I don't have a better idea at the moment, so I'll just stick with that.
Chopper: that is a reindeer.
Robin: not a demigod. She has enough problems being the sole survivor of a buster call, the only one who can read the Poneglyphs, and having the largest starting bounty in history. I entertained the idea of making her an Athena kid, but it felt wrong somehow.
Franky: the original post and I see eye to eye on this one. Franky is an orphan from nowhere who builds war machines as a teenager. He's so clearly a Hephaestus kid.
Brook: Son of Hades, a forbidden child. Old enough and spent enough years isolated that he doesn't get why this is such a big deal.
Jinbe: As much as I'd love to make the First Son of the Sea a son of Poseidon, I feel as if his story works best if he earned his strength and reputation.
Right, crew out of the way, let's get to some extras. Yonko first.
Whitebeard: Zeus. Zeus isn't just the God of thunder and the sky, he's also the king of the gods. That makes him a god of hospitality, as well. And what's more hospitable than adopting literally hundreds of children because growing up an orphan sucked so bad? Not to mention that, within Riordan's continuity at least, Zeus is the worst deadbeat of the lot, so making his son the pinnacle of fatherhood in Shonen anime just feels right.
Big Mom: Also Eris. Big Mom and Luffy are, fundamentally, the same. Two gluttons who want freedom and equality for all, with horrible abandonment issues. The difference being, Luffy had Shanks to set a good example for him, while Big Mom had a life of crime. If their roles were reversed, they would have each other's lives, and we'd be watching Big Mom Piece (ngl that'd go so hard)
Kaido: Kaido is something called an Oni, but what does that mean? It looks like he has horns and he's stupid big. I kinda want Kaido not to be a demigod, because he's a monster. The King of the Beasts, the World's Strongest Creature, a dragon waiting in a castle for someone to kill him.
Shanks: Manga spoilers in this one. You've been warned.
We recently learned that Shanks is Figarland Shanks, son of Figarland Garling, leader of God's Knights. He's a celestial dragon. I'm not sure if you've seen One Piece, but celestial dragons aren't good people. They steal, rape, and kill with impunity, and Garling is especially cold blooded among them. However, the celestial dragons are also an example of Oda doing Nature vs Nurture again, and Shanks is his example of that. Shanks is found in a box by the Roger Pirates at God Valley, and the King of the Pirates chooses to raise Shanks as his own. Anyways, Shanks is mortal, although all the CD's are probably legacies.
Blackbeard: I'm not saying anything on this one until we get more backstory. For a placeholder answer, I'll say Apate, goddess of deceit.
Buggy: Aphrodite, because have you seen that man's sex appeal? Plus, people believe him way too easily, he gotta be charmspeaking.
That's it for Yonko, let's get the original three Admirals, and then some important miscellaneous characters and we'll call it a day.
Akainu: who needs to be a demigod when you're HIM? Wallahi we're not ready.
Being serious, though, I'm a "Rocks Pirates killed Akainu's family" truther. His narrative role is best fit by him being just some guy.
Aokiji/Kuzan: Speaking of fan theories, he's 100% Brook's son.
Kizaru: Given how he usually drones when he talks, and he never seems to take things seriously, I'm saying Dionysus. I will double down on this if/when he betrays Saturn.
Garp: remember a thousand years ago, when I talked about Zoro and his "fuck around and find out" energy? Yeah, Garp regularly talks shit about world nobles *to their faces.* Ares for sure.
Roger: I'm feeling either just some guy, or Athena. Something about the search for the One Piece, a quest for lost knowledge and absolute freedom, feels very Athena to me.
Ace: See Roger. That's the only part of his story I'm touching, because his backstory is lowkey perfect.
Sabo: just some guy. He was always just some guy that Luffy and Ace liked, and it's one of his greatest qualities in a story littered with lineages of heroes and special races.

Young Love Spoiler-Filled Review
Tumblr media
Young Love is a mature animated comedy spun off from the short film, Hair Love, by Matthew A. Cherry, Everett Downing Jr., and Bruce W. Smith. Cherry, who created this series, began working in the entertainment industry in 2007. Downing created the Afrofuturist series My Dad the Bounty Hunter. Smith created The Proud Family and The Proud Family: Louder and Prouder. Sony Pictures Animation, Blue Key Entertainment, and Lion Forge Animation produced this series. This article was written during the 2023 SAG-AFTRA strike. Without the labor of actors currently on strike, Young Love, being reviewed here, wouldn't exist.
Reprinted from Pop Culture Maniacs and Wayback Machine. This was the fifty-third article I wrote for Pop Culture Maniacs. This post was originally published on October 18, 2023.
This series comes at a time that there are growing number of Black-centered animated series on streaming services, including My Dad the Bounty Hunter, The Proud Family: Louder and Prouder, Craig of the Creek, Supa Team 4, Kizazi Moto: Generation Fire, Central Park, and Moon Girl and Devil Dinosaur. There are also ongoing indie animations, like Guardian Instance, Diver: The Animated Series, and Silver Lin, by Black animator Brandon Wright. In addition, indie animations such as Defenders of Alodia, LimeLight, and Captain Zero are in development. Iwájú, Dantai, Cookies & Milk, Tiana, and Iyanu: Child of Wonder are five animated series set to premiere on streaming platforms in the future.
Young Love follows a tight-knit Black family trying to pursue their dreams. It goes beyond what is depicted in Hair Love. Only Angela Young (voiced by Issa Rae), spoke in that film. In this series, Rae reprises her role. Kid Cudi and Brooke Monroe Conaway join her. Cudi voices her partner, Stephen Love. Conaway voices her daughter, Zuri Michaela Young-Love. The first episode pulls you into their world, as does the animation style. Stephen is an aspiring music producer. Angela is a hair stylist. She enters her workplace, the salon, Sister Locs, two months after she left the hospital, but is out of practice.
The episode goes on from there, with Stephen and Angela showing support for their daughter at a school auction. Star (voiced by Tamar Braxton) and Angela's parents, Russell Young (voiced by Henry Lennix) and Gigi Young (voiced by Loretta Devine), are introduced. Stephen and Angela rent their apartment from Russell, who is often hounding Stephen to pay the rent. Stephen, Angela, and Zuri often have fun together, despite their challenges. However, there are tensions. Angela wants to complete her bucket list, which she put together before her chemotherapy. Zuri has dug tunnels through the apartment, so she moves through undetected. At other times, Stephen and Angela help Zuri with her school projects.
Through it all, comedy is part and parcel of this series, mixed with occasional coarse language, suggestive dialogue, and violence. Young Love doesn't sugarcoat life in Chicago or tense family dynamics, but shows them realistically instead. At the same time, the series highlights the role of the sharing economy, sexist beliefs from men (claims of women's incapability), and gangs. The latter is manifested in Lil Ankh (voiced by Idrys). He is a rap/hip hop star and Stephen works for him. When it comes to the sharing economy, Angela convinces her fellow co-worker, Cheri, to use a digital app for booking appointments.
The series has a strong slice-of-life vibe, from the fight between Russell and a 1970s washing machine (he finally wins when he puts it at the curb), Zuri and Gigi going to apartments managed by Russell to collect rent (to prove women aren't incapable). At the same time, it provides commentary on social media influencers. In the fourth episode, for instance, Zuri becomes friends with Stacy, after she objects to the book selection by the school librarian, Ms. Green and feels guilt for her homelessness, resulting in her inviting Stacey and her family to stay in the Young's apartment.
This quickly goes wrong when Angela becomes a social media influencer and exploits the new residents, using them to gain followers. They strike back by mooching off her. Angela and Zuri get their new occupants (Stacey and her family) to leave by getting them a hotel room. In the end, they do very well for themselves. Supporters gift them an entire house, while Zuri, Stephen, and Angela don't even have a whole house. In some ways, Angela and Zuri get what they deserve. Overall, the episode is critical of social media influencers and their negative influence. Crowdfunding's positives are hinted. This episode has a similar message to that communicated about such individuals in Karma's World and The Proud Family: Louder and Prouder.
The value of art and the creative process is key theme in Young Love. For instance, in the fourth episode, Stephen connects with his nephew, Amir (voiced by Noah Cottrell), who likes to spray paint. He brings him to a modern art exhibit, exciting him. This goes further in the next episode, when Stephen puts aside his contract with Lil Ankh, after the latter rejects his beats, and tries to ink a deal with a White male advertising executive. He hopes that this will help him break free of Ankh.
The firm is steeped in White bro culture. It is racist but hidden behind niceties. The executive he met previously is joined by a few others. They all dress like Black people, claim they "get" them, and are "allies." While he cringes, he goes along with it because of the compensation. This episode criticizes "inclusive" corporate culture. In reality, the culture of this corporation is the "same old race shit." This gets worse when Stephen uncovers that he's making a racially tinged laundry detergent jingle.
What follows is a funny sequence: a Twitter bird chases Stephen and Star. They are confronted by historical Black figures who warn them against making the jingle. They ignore this, and make a subversive jingle, with Black power themes. The White ad execs don't know better. This is squashed when Lil Ankh releases a similar song, and they have to return the money. Even worse, Lil Ankh calls out Stephen as "trash" and a "traitor." It is no accident that in the same episode, Angela bonds with a new client, a Black woman named Jade, one of the only Black women who leads a PR firm. Zuri tries to sell cookies to "get back" at the Girl Scouts.
youtube
This series is more than a mix of slice-of-life and drama. The episodes often come with warnings for strong or coarse language, and occasional violence. Unlike other series, aimed at all ages, Young Love is aimed at mature adults. It doesn't whitewash anything. Take for example, the sixth episode, when Stephen tries to figure out who he is without Lil Ankh, who stole his beats without credit, and ends up in a bad funk. After he brings Zuri to school, his beat-up car breaks down. He gets four flat tires. It is almost a manifestation of 1998 hit by The Coup, "Cars & Shoes."
If that isn't bad enough, Ankh refuses to give him credit. Star continues working with Ankh despite him being a scumbag. With this defeat, he imagines everyone criticizing his work, and even fills out employment applications that Russell gave him. There is then a twist: Russell once was drummer for a funk band! He declares that he sees potential in Stephen, saying he believes in him and says music is Stephen's identity. This is just the inspiration he needs. It is not mistake that everyone learns a lesson by the end of the episode: Angela learns that she should stop meddling in people's lives as a life coach and Zuri stops trying to tell people's fortunes with a demonic cootie-catcher. The episode ends with Stephen teaching Zuri piano chords. Angela welcomes further bonding between Zuri and Stephen.
The next episode of Young Love is one of my favorites since it contains social commentary on pyramid schemes, video game addiction, and comedy (known as throwing shade in this series). For the first of these topics, Angela tries to extract her mom from a pyramid scheme called Ruminate, to sell reported "holy water." This changes when the devious speaker declares that a benefit is an "all-exclusive" trip to Paris. She then accepts it since a vacation to Paris is on her bucket list.
They end up hawking this to more people until they realize the obvious: it is a swindle. They get a ticket, but to Paris, Illinois, not Paris, France, infuriating them. Angela says that Chicago's broken educational system was a cause for her poor choice. She thanks her mom for teaching her to believe in herself again. While Angela and her mom round up "the crew" (those they roped into the scheme) to take down Ruminate, no one believes their tall tale, which appears partially fabricated.
The commentary on video game addiction and comedy is more straightforward. Stephen becomes resolute and determined to beat Hustle Quest, a video game that his nephew Amir made. After several days, he is victorious. However, Zuri easily beats the game in a few minutes, surprising Stephen. The latter makes clear that becoming obsessed with something short-lived is a waste of time. It implies that people have different forms of obsession. Video game addiction is listed in the International Classification of Diseases (ICD). However, there isn't a consensus on whether it is separate disorder or manifestation of other disorders.
When it comes to comedy, Zuri learns from Amir how to show "shade" on people. She stands up to Twan (voiced by Debra Wilson), who is calling people names. Both end up in the principal's office. He chastises them for their behavior. The principal says that if they continue, they will become comedians who charge pennies for jokes. Zuri and Twan decide to team up and tell jokes together, and charge people for it.
The principal's line may be a dig at comedians and how some will do anything to be funny, even if it takes others down. On the other hand, it might be more tongue-and-cheek, considering the comedy of Young Love itself. Consider the next episode. Zuri believes that her parents are having sex. Instead, they are trying to coordinate a schedule. Zuri's initiation is somewhat right: after she leaves, they try to have sex. However, Stephen's desire for chicken wins out, annoying Angela.
Of all the episodes, the eighth episode touches on the value of artwork, drug use in the Black community, the value of artwork, and "spicing up" romance. For the first of these topics, Amir bonds with Zuri. Amir honors his father by spray painting on a wall. Zuri unknowingly helps him, as does a young Black man wearing a face mask. This empowering message about art fits with other episodes. In comparison, series such as The Proud Family: Louder and Prouder do not have similar messages.
On the second of the topics, Stephen and Angela try to find a place where they went early on in their relationship. However, the restaurant has disappeared, and they feel out of place in a now-gentrified neighborhood. Focusing on gentrification in Young Love is not unique. Kizazi Moto, Moon Girl and Devil Dinosaur, City of Ghosts, and Birdie Wing did the same. Stephen and Angela are skeptical about going into a shop, sitting where the restaurant they loved was located. They only enter to charge their phones. A White woman runs the store. She welcomes them, bowing, and welcomes them with "namaste." In some ways, she represents spiritualist White people.
This soon changes. Angela and Stephen drink their tea. It's infused with THC, otherwise known as tetrahydrocannabinol. It's the main psychoactive ingredient in cannabis. They remain high for the rest of the episode. This doesn't stop them from giving zingers to White people. Angela calls gentrification "domestic imperialism" and describes a nearby White shop owner as a "colonizer." They find the food truck run by the chef who once ran their beloved restaurant. They are so high that Angela doesn't discipline Zuri for leaving the house (she was supposed to stay put). Stephen just vibes while this happens.
youtube
Apart from The Freak Brothers, an indie animated series which is absolute dreck, and an allusion in an episode of Steven Universe Future, I can't think of any other series which gives a positive portrayal of getting high. None of the other Black animated series I mentioned earlier even approach the topic of drug use at all. Executives would consider it "too mature" for all-ages series. Perhaps they think it could increase drug use since one study suggested popular music about cannabis could do. More likely, they have certain perceptions of children's wants, which don't always align with reality.
Otherwise, the final plot thread, of spicing up romance, takes place between Russell and Gigi. They give each other presents, but Gigi remains annoyed that each year repeats itself. Rain continues to stop Russell's plans to go out for their romantic anniversary. She demands they change things up and Russell ends up delivering. He returns in the uniform of a letter carrier (his former job). The message this communicates is that love is possible between anyone, no matter their age. It fits with the rest of the series, in which Russell, Gigi, Angela, Stephen, and Zuri live in the same building. In fact, Stephen, Zuri, and Angela live above Gigi and Russell, and have a cat named Rocky, who is a character in some ways, but never speaks.
Later episodes involve Stephen and Angela either helping their daughter, Zuri, or trying to bond with others. The latter is on display when Amir goes with Stephen to buy expensive sneakers, which cost $300.00. Angela begins to come into her own, as she runs the salon, known as Sister Locs, and realizes that she can't be the "cool" boss, but needs firm instead. Stephen tries to compose some beats and realizes he shouldn't be like Lil Ankh, but should chart his own path. When it comes to helping Zuri, her parents get her out of a situation where she caused students to riot over coffee cake, after she thought she was Angela Davis.
These episodes set the stage for the final two episodes of Young Love. In the first of these episodes, Angela's parents (and Zuri's grandparents by extension) demand that Zuri come to church after she complains that God is ignoring her prayers. They are horrified after Stephen calls out religion as corrupt and Angela says spirituality is what is best for Zuri. Going to church is uncomfortable for Stephen and Angela. In the process, Angela lies. She claims she's married to Stephen. At the same time, the episode shows how certain people can be charlatans. Zuri poses as the "chosen one" so she can one-up her friend, Sky. She even tries to take away the Star student idea when Sky begins questioning her.
In this series, God is a Black man. He is remarkably busy and claims to not have time to involve himself in people's affairs. He is similar to the God, with a light bulb as a head, in Disenchantment, voiced by Phil LaMarr, a well-known Black male voice actor. The episode has an interesting twist. It turns out that the financial advisor who helped Angela and Stephen get their finances in order, and deal with their overdue payments, was God himself. In addition, the Principal's worry about lawsuits (when Zuri claims she is the chosen one) and separation of church and state is timely, since some sneer at legal prohibition of religious involvement in public schools, in the U.S., and desire the re-introduction of (Christian) prayer.
This nuanced approach to religion in Young Love, ending with Angela's parents remaining religious, while Angela, Zuri, and Stephen are spiritualists, is unique. It differs from lip service the Simpsons family shows to churchgoing in The Simpsons, or lack of religious worship in The Proud Family, and its reboot. This nuance reflects the fact that only 16% of Americans committed to attending religious services in person. A 2021 survey is even more pertinent. One-in-five Black Americans told survey takers they are religiously unaffiliated. Instead, they identify as agnostic, atheist, or “nothing in particular.” This is especially the case among Gen Z and Millennials. In addition, a recent survey attested that over 10% of Asian Americans are non-religious.
The Young Love series finale builds upon the penultimate episode. It begins with Zuri's declaration that she will marry her classmate, BJ. This goes awry when he swallows a strawberry with a ring inside. Following this, Zuri, and Angela's parents, pressure Stephen and Angela to get married. At first, neither wants this. They laud their freedom from "binding chains of matrimony." Both describe themselves, to the school principal, as loving parents committed to providing Zuri with a stable home. Non-marriage between Angela and Stephen remained in part because of Stephen's repeated failures to propose marriage.
Russell's claim that no weddings or marriages will cause an apocalypse impacts this decision. A recent poll is relevant: Americans expressed worries about declining marriages. Even so, Catholics and historically Black Protestants, especially, had less concern about those with fewer children. That poll also noted that larger groups took a neutral view. They believed that the declining number of marriages is neither positive nor negative for society. At the same time, many women said, in a related poll, of Americans that they took the traditional, and patriarchal route, by taking their husband's surname in opposite-sex marriages.
As such, Russell's view is unhinged. Society has existed, and will continue to exist, without marriage. There is public support among Americans for a nuclear family, even though few see parenthood or marriage as "central to living a fulfilling life." Russell's response is akin to the "No on Infinity" ad in the Futurama "Proposition Infinity" episode. That ad satirizes people against same-sex marriage. Russell's fear combines with Angela's fear that she will become a 1950s-style housewife, a path she thinks Zuri will follow. At the same time, Stephen fears Angela will leave him, causing him to live alone in a house in 1980s-style situation.
The episode ends with both eschewing the idea of marriage, after Angela says they are going too fast, Stephen remains unsure, and Angela's therapist says she should not put everyone else's needs before her own. Gigi stops Zuri's brainless child bride marriage proposal to BJ. Stephen and Angela agree to have a very long romantic engagement instead of marriage, saying that love is holding their little family together. Even so, there is a marriage between Gigi and Russell. It is a re-marriage, a re-stating of commitment between them. The wedding goes on its head, after they play a song Stephen produced and begin throwing cake at each other. Overall, this episode is a clever way to end Young Love. It makes clear that love isn't only possible through marriage.
youtube
In this way, it makes a different point that Spy x Family, with Loid and Yor's marriage of convenience, made without either being in love with one another, at first. The views of Angela and Stephen on marriage align with criticism of the marriage institution, even of same-sex marriage. Critics argue that marriage perpetuates a system which makes married people "more worthy of...health care and economic rights" than others. Such critics include Michael Warner (in his book The Trouble with Normal), Kate Millett, Shulamith Firestone, Simone de Beauvoir, Eleanor Leacock, Clare Chambers, and Dean Spade.
Obviously, Young Love is not some political manifesto extolling how marriage is not the be-all, end-all for love. But it is a breath of fresh air from the many series out there, either directly (Tangled) or indirectly stating that marriage is the only way to ensure that love can be long-lasting. There can still be romantic friendships and romances without any legally binding life-long commitments. Unfortunately, popular culture depictions of those friendships or romances are rare. Instead, shows fit with the societal expectation of marriage and the idea that unmarried/single people are abhorrent, bizarre, or "suspicious." This mentality has seeped into online communities of fans who enjoy yuri or yaoi. Such fans believe that two or more characters in love need to marry.
The fact that Young Love grew from a short film named Hair Love, which is less than seven minutes long, is phenomenal. Hair Love features a young Black girl awoken by a cat, trying out a new hair style, and following a video of her mother, who has an easy-to-use hair tutorial. In Hair Love, neither she, nor her dad, who tries to help her with her hair, which he fights, akin to what Moon Girl/Lunella in Moon Girl and Devil Dinosaur did, speaks. Her mother has the only speaking role.
Young Love wasn't crowdfunded like Hair Love. However, the same company produced it: Lion Forge Animation, along with other companies. That animation studio, a division of Lion Forge Entertainment, is known for Drawn In, Rhymes Through the Times, The Park Bench; and Rise Up, Sing Out. In addition, the studio announced work on a film (Heiress) and TV series (Iyanu: Child of Wonder and Hero's Journey the Series).
As I mentioned in my last review, Max screwed over this series by posting four episodes a week. This made the series almost impossible to keep up with. It ensured that not even one Wikipedian would create a page for the series. Instead, the series is only a redirect on the Hair Love page. This is unfortunate, since social media chatter on X/Twitter is generally positive, except for a few people using clips out of context to bash the show. Users call it cute, slick, cool, hilarious, hip, perfect, and heartwarming. On other social media platforms, and among critics, the reception appears to be positive.
Issa Rae, Kid Cudi, Brooke Monroe Conaway, Tamar Braxton, Henry Lennix, Loretta Devine, Idrys, Debra Wilson, and Noah Cottrell, voice actors for this series, bring their talent to the table. Mara Junot (as Cynthia Love), Mike Smith (as Dwayne), and many others, join them. Their experience allows the series to tackle topics like bullying, masculinity, gender roles, marketing, racial justice, exploitation of Black culture with ease. Even so, not everything gets equal emotional weight.
Rae is new to voice acting, apart from voicing the mother in Hair Love and Jessica Drew in Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse. Similarly, Cudi voiced Jabari in Entergalactic and Clay in Trolls Band Together. Junot recently voiced Beta in My Dad the Bounty Hunter. Devine has voiced many characters, as have Lennix and Smith. Wilson recently voiced Amanda Waller in My Adventures with Superman, Terra Snapdragon in The Owl House, Quinn's mother in Final Space, and Z'oto in Star Trek: Lower Decks. In contrast, this series is the first voice role for Conaway, Cottrell, and Braxton.
I hope that this series gets a second season. It would give new/newish screenwriters like Brian Ashburn, Breannah Gibson, R. Malcolm Jones, Kelsey Barry, Jackson DeLoach, Juston Gordon-Montgomery, Guillermo Martinez, story writer Jeanine Daniels, executive story editor Keisha Zollar, and seasoned writers such as Willie Hunter, Carl Jones, Randa Sheppard, and Dayna Lynne North, a chance to shine again. Knowing how turbulent the animation industry, in the U.S., is right now, and how the executives are stonewalling SAG-AFTRA (resulting in a continued actor's strike), I am doubting it will happen.
Young Love is currently streaming on Max.

Post-recording, the crew wants to clarify that Kevin Yagher was responsible for the Freddy Snake, and Mark Shostrom was in charge of the Penelope Sudrow dummy that smashes into the Freddyvision TV.
With the success of A Nightmare on  Elm Street 3: Dream Warriors (1987), following the critical failure of A Nightmare on Elm Street 2: Freddy’s Revenge (1985), New line Cinema firmly cemented Freddy Krueger and A Nightmare on Elm Street as one of the most iconic horror franchises of its time. Not only does Dream Warriors feature Robert Englund continuing to breathe both humor and fear into Freddy Krueger but also the return of both Heather Langenkamp and John Saxon from the original. The film also features Craig Wasson (Ghost Story) as the male lead and early film roles for Patricia Arquette and Larry Fishburne. Frank Darabont (The Mist) and Bruce Wagner join Wes Craven on scripting chores and Chuck Russell (The Blob, The Mask) directs while Angelo Badalamenti (Twin Peaks, Blue Velvet) provides the score – a winning combination of talent. Surely a Grue-Crew highly recommended selection with special effects by Greg Cannom, Doug Beswick, Mark Shostrom, Kevin Yagher, and more!
Be sure to check out the first time the 80s Grue-Crew took a dive into this film in February 2017, featuring Doc Rotten, Christopher G. Moore, and Thomas Mariani as the Grue-Crew. You can find it here: A NIGHTMARE ON ELMS STREET 3: DREAM WARRIORS (1987) — Episode 102
