Scary Bird

(Yan!Chrollo x Willing! reader) [Like, reader is down bad with Stockholm Syndrom]

"Chrollo...!" You whispered, shaking him awake.

Its currently 1:04AM. The curtains are closed, but if they weren't, you'd be able to see the beautiful view of the city at night. Way, way above everyone else, your room is on the 22th floor. Such a height is the perfect way to muffle the sounds of the city below. Now all that can be heard is the low rumble of the city, and the hum of the AC during this warm summer. Oh, and of course, your hushed voice as you shake the love of your life awake.

"mmm....My love, is everything alright?" He groggily queries. Even as he was just waking up, he immediately cared about your safety and comfort. What a man. It was enough to make you internally swoon for a moment, but then you remember the question at hand.

"Um...Chrollo, if I forgot to do my Spanish lesson, would you protect me...?" You ask, sounding as scared as possible, even though it was taking every ounce of will power to not giggle.

"...Pardon?" His reaction was worth it. From all the time you've spent with this man, you've learned a couple of things. One of them being, he is still a human. He can and will make mistakes, and can be tricked. That's why you woke him up, so his genuine confusion would be more palpable than an already up-and-at-em Chrollo.

His brows knit together in confusion and a sprinkle of concern. His eyes looked tired and questioning. Was it possible you were sleep talking right now? No, your eyes are wide awake. Then...a nightmare, perhaps? But...about Spanish lessons? That's a rather....unique nightmare to have. It would have made him chuckle, had he not just been woken while in the middle of a REM cycle.

"Well, it's just...I realized. You took my phone when you first took...me. I realized something: I haven't done my Spanish lesson in so long! The doulingo bird is gonna kill me, or break my legs, or my family's legs!" You whine.

... At this point, Chrollo is convinced you're sleep talking with your eyes wide awake, though new to him, is occurring right now. This was bizarre.

"What about a Doulingo bird?"

"He's gonna kill me!"

"And why is that?"

"I just told you, I haven't done my Spanish lesson."

"Dear, is it possible you just had a very bad dream?"

"No, no, I'm serious right now!"

He raised an eyebrow ever so slightly. Mostly out of confusion, but as he is slowly waking up, he is starting to feel more and more amused. He wonders if you'll even remember this encounter when you get up in the morning.

"My love, I can assure you, I wouldn't let a Doulingo, nor raven, nor vulture, nor crow harm a single hair on your head. Let alone for missing a Spanish lecture."

He thinks that Doulingo is an actual type of bird now? Oh, this is too funny. Whatever will power you had stored quickly diminished. Laughter left your being so hard you felt like wheezing. You were being rather loud for his taste, however, and it's evident in his expression.

"Please, explain the joke." He says in that voice. The one that makes it clear he's trying to keep his composure.

"It's, um, well, it's basically a language learning app, and the joke is if you don't do your lesson, the mascot, Doulingo, is going to kidnap you or your family until you get the lessons done."

"I see. Now, can you explain to me why it seems to bring you much joy to tell this to me right now, when we should both be asleep, and not in the morning?"

Ugh, you love him, but you hate it when he does this- getting you to explain the prank or joke to make it not so funny anymore. It kills the fun of it all.

With a sigh, you lay your head back down on his chest, and wrap your arms around him tight as his arm that was previously drapped across your back assumes its previous position and reclaims its spot.

"...I'm sorry. This was a stupid prank.." You admit, letting your white flag wave. Trying to find your way out of this whole will only dig you deeper. When it comes to Chrollo, admitting defeat and apologizing is the best course of action.

As you nuzzle into his chest to hide you face of 'shame', (It was a face of regret. Regret of playing the prank on him, and regret that he made it so...unfunny.), he lightly chuckles, and kisses the top of your head.

"I wasn't lying, though. I won't let anything harm you." He comforted smoothly, then closed his eyes once more.

This was why you loved him.

"Oh boy, we are going to have a big job with this one." Words from a tired Jason.

“Hey, I’m still here, you know that?” You speak in disbelief. It still felt like a dream, where else would you get to see your favorite characters? You had never been able to shift before, so you faithfully doubted that was the case.

Jason just rolls his eyes saying “Unfortunately I noticed, you won't shut up for a single second” - and there goes your sympathy with him.

“Why are pretty people always jerks? - You're an exception Dick, shush” You say but stop as soon as you see Batman's cloak coming towards you, no longer able to control it, you end up smiling more than you've ever seen in your life, after all he was her childhood hero “My gods, Bruce Wayne? Batman? I could pass out!”

“Jason, no!” Dick speaks in warning before the youngest even opens his mouth, but even so he lets out a sneer and says:

“I could make YOU pass out” Jay mutters and you give him the middle finger “You already did that, idiot”, turning your attention to Bruce.

“Why is there a teenager in the cave, who apparently knows our secret identities? I'm only going to ask once” Batman speaks monotone and looks at the boys with his arms crossed and his mask removed.

“Ehm… well… funny story” Tim starts to say while scratching his head lightly, but Jason rolls his eyes.

“I brought her here, I heard some druggies talking about a girl falling from the sky and I went to check it out. I don't know how a demon can fall from the sky but there she is” He speaks ironically and you just stick out your tongue, murmuring that the only demon in this house was him. The boy continues “When I got close to her, she was cursing more than a sailor and had a fangirl attack shouting “Jaaaaason”, I erased her and brought her here. History end"

Bruce raises an eyebrow at Jason and sighs deeply, rubbing his temples. He honestly needed a break from all this, he couldn't take it anymore. “Currently, Barry informed us that there was a rupture of some barrier between universes caused by some meta, it turns out that she was brought from another reality and that is possibly why she knows our identities. Am I correct, miss..?”

“Y/n, and yes you are right. Finally someone with neurons- no offense Timmy” You mutter and the boy just shrugs, then continues talking “If the kid idiots had listened to me instead of fainting, I would have told them that in my reality you are all characters from a brand , so I theoretically know everything about each of you.” There was a silent pause “That seemed kind of scary, my bad.”

Minutes later, Bruce releases you from the place where you were tied up “As long as we don't know what happened, you are welcome to stay in the mansion, Alfred is already aware of this conversation and will prepare a room for you” He speaks calmly, you he just nods with a small smile in gratitude. He turns to his children “You. I want everyone in the mansion during this time, apparently you don't have an alternative version of her in this universe and she will have to stay here for some time, so we need to train her” He says leaving the Batcave.

“Soooo… Dick, can you and your nice ass show me my new room?” You say with a wide smile and you only hear Jason snort in the corner “What’s up, red bird? Do you want to show me instead of Richard? Come on come on, take me then” A hand sign is made by you, as you walk towards some stairs where Bruce had gone but Jason grabs your waist, changing the direction to the left “Oopsie, thanks kitty” You hear the laughter behind you.

“You’re going to be the death of me,” Jason says, walking up the correct floors with you.

"wilbur yells at reader during argument." you're tired and stressed, and the last thing you want is wilbur taking out his stress out on you too. "a dancing rockstar." you spot the rockstar across the bar, and tubbo takes a notice. you've never talked to the man before, so why not dance with him tonight? "cooking stream!" after meeting each other in person after years, you and wilbur finally do a cooking stream together! though.. something tells you that this isn't the last time you cook together.

October is here! Time to pull out your sweaters, scented candles and spiced coffee, as we settle in for maximum Fall coziness!… Right after we’re done addressing the big corporate elephant who’s wandered into the room ^^0

Last month, Unity made a startling decision that had us scrambling for a few days.

Unity is the game engine we use for Arcadia Fallen. It’s a popular tool that’s used by many indie developers, and it used to run on a monthly subscription model. But this month they suddenly announced they would change their monetization to instead charge a set fee every time a game runs their installer; more specifically, they wanted 20 cents every time someone installed a game. This sparked quite the stir online, from developers, gamers, and influencers. It was actually quite refreshing to see the industry unified for once, though the circumstances were very…urg.  Eventually, Unity reconsidered these changes and came up with something more reasonable, but we still felt uneasy. Daniel’s been reading through the fine print, and we’re not comfortable with the terms Unity proposes going forward. The difference is, they used to only charge a subscription fee for developing Unity games, but now they have added an implicit fee for distributing Unity games, which they can change at a whim and the change would also affect previously released games under the new terms. When they decide to crank up the fee, there’s no telling how it might affect a small studio like us, which is scary.

So what does this mean for us?

We’re going to continue developing Arcadia Fallen II in Unity, because we’re still on the old terms for the project, but any future projects will likely be moved to another engine. It sucks, because we’ve been developing a lot of really cool tools for our dialogue system that will now have to be remade, but we can’t risk our livelihood and the future of the studio on the whim of unpredictable tech giants. Speaking of which!

We’re on Bluesky now as well!^^ If there’s one thing we’ve learned this month, it's that you should never become dependent on one mega corporation, so we’re trying to spread out a little. We’ll still be posting on Twitter, since Bluesky isn’t very accessible yet with their invite-only system, but hopefully it will be a good alternative to those who have left the old bird app.

Writing is progressing smoothly. Lots of editing of the early chapters is being done at the moment to polish that section. Meanwhile, Hannah’s new sprite is looking super cute. The Illusionist prefect is ready to take on her exams with determination, coffee, and sleepless nights… Wait what?

A non-exhaustive list of the birds whose calls/songs I've heard today, sitting indoors with the door open for a breeze:

- American robin (never shuts up, always angy at something or another)

- chipping sparrow (incessant beeping. it is Chipping Time)

- American crow

- American goldfinch (lotta territorial beeping today which. my man sounds like a squeaky toy. so scary.)

- downy woodpecker

- white-breasted nuthatch

- brown thrasher (a surprise! not common in this much urban sprawl)

- house finch (such a pretty lil song! highlight of my mornings!)

- house sparrow (invasive but i like them anyway. they didn't ask for this. loud babies.)

- European starling (same as above but add more grease lol)

And probably more I can't immediately recall. I live in a suburb of a Metropolitan Area. This is not exactly Peak Biodiversity, and yet! Many birds.

My point is, even if you can't go outdoors very often, it's good to allow the outdoors in because there's a lot of good stuff out there. It's good to remember that there are beings (probably very nearby to you!) who aren't concerned with anything but foraging and hunting and mating and other Life Stuff. Learning the bird calls and songs common to your area is a great way to connect with the nature all around you, which can help you maintain a healthier sense of perspective.

Cornell Ornithology is a great resource to get started and their app Merlin allows you to install identification data packs specific to your region. They have packs for all over the world. It even has a feature to ID birds based on photos or sounds! (Though that stuff's a bit limited and finicky imho)

Anyway. Go birding. Stay home birding. Whatever you need to do to get your attention focused on nature instead of... [gestures broadly] all of the horrors. It's good for you.

But what happened when ot7s made threads about SEVEN memes? You know what I'm about to say, right? I mean, it's one thing to not include the Jikook memes, fine. But it's another to include the Taekook memes but pretend u didn't see any Jikook ones. This made it very hard for me to enjoy these threads. Because really??!!!??

If the problem was them not wanting to attract shippers then why the tkk memes?? Which weren't even funny btw. The Namkook ones were way better.

So yes, while this does confirm this fandom is scared of how real Jikook are, what I mostly understand is that this fandom is mostly full of tkkrs. And that, ladies and gentlemen, is what's scary.

Summery:

Sam loved hearing Colin speak. He loved hearing him speak German even more.

The night was quiet. Sam was making good progress with the work and hadn't discovered a single talker yet.

He still had two incidents to work through and then he was able to relax until the end of his shift.

“Du dummes Stück Scheiße! Jetzt arbeite doch endlich!”

Sam jumped up and looked in the direction the screaming was coming from. Colin sat at Gwen's computer and pressed the spacebar several times impatiently. Apparently, there were some problems again that were getting to Colin's last nerve.

Over the last few days, Sam learned that Colin wasn't actually that scary and was just completely done with Freddy. The two had actually had some nice conversations in the break room and Sam was developing something of a fondness for Colin's Scottish accent. He couldn't explain why, but every time he heard the IT guy speak, a pleasant tingle ran down his spine and he began to secretly look forward to their next conversation.

“Ich schwöre, dass ich dich in den nächsten Fluss werfe den ich finde kann, wenn du nicht anfängst zu kooperieren!”

Colin's voice had gone from angry and annoyed to pure desperation.

Sam had only now realized that he couldn't understand a word the IT guy was saying, and something stirred within him.

The office worker knew that Colin was learning German in hopes of better understanding the code, but this was the first time he had heard him actually speak German. And even though Colin was most likely cursing and yelling at the computer, Sam was mesmerized.

Maybe it was the fact that Sam couldn't understand him, which gave him an air of mystery. Colin could whisper the sweetest things and Sam would never know it.

“Do you need anything, Sonnenschein?”

Sam didn't notice that the Scot was now looking directly at him. Had he been staring for long? Sam felt the heat rush to his face.

He wanted to say something but was interrupted by Norris.

The office worker wanted to pause the computer voice and explain himself to the IT guy, but he had turned back to Gwen's computer and was pounding on the keys in annoyance.

This was probably Sam's signal to take a break. Norris chose a long Reddit post today.

In the break room he found Alice, sitting comfortably at the table and looking intently at her cell phone. Sam suspected that she was trying to beat her high score in Flappy Bird again. After the app was removed from the stores in 2014, Alice somehow managed to transfer the app to every new phone and continues to play it religiously to this day.

Without disturbing her, Sam made a beeline for the coffee machine and turned it on.

"No! I was so close!” Alice groaned in annoyance and drank the rest of her coffee.

“Still haven’t reached two hundred?”

Alice didn't say anything and just shook her head as she stared at her phone. She was probably wondering whether it was worth starting again or whether she should do it after work.

“Considering that you've been carrying the app around for a decade, one would assume that you should at least have a higher high score.”

“Oh, be quiet!” Alice shouted, throwing a crumpled napkin at her colleague. “This is not an app! It’s an extreme sport!”

“Whatever you say,” Sam replied, leaning against the wall as he waited for the coffee to be ready. "Say. Do you know what’s going on with Colin?”

Alice was staring at her phone again and judging by the movement of her hand, she was back on Tumblr. "What do you mean?"

"He speaks German!"

“Oh that!” she laughed. “Colin got pretty mean to Freddy yesterday and Lena banned him from swearing for the rest of the week.”

“And that’s why he speaks German?”

“Nobody understands it except him, so he can just say that he talks very aggressively about puppies and unicorns.”

“Huh…”

Alice shrugged. “Use every loophole you can find!”

When the coffee was finally ready, Alice made her way back to her desk, leaving her new colleague alone in the break room.

As Sam poured himself a cup, his thoughts turned back to Colin.

He could feel his face heating up again and he had to face the fact that he was definitely falling for the Scotsman. A frightening thought, but there was something exciting about it.

Sam was so deep in thought that he didn't even notice that Colin had entered the break room, causing him to jump to the side in shock as the taller man opened one of the cupboards to retrieve a cup.

To stay out of the way, Sam sat at one of the tables and watched Colin over the rim of his coffee cup.

“Dir gefällt es also, dass ich Deutsch spreche?”

Sam froze.

“Du brauchst nicht Mal zu antworten, denn ich kann es an deinem Gesicht sehen” Colin didn't even have to look over at Sam to know that he looked like a deer in headlights.

“Ich hatte schon bemerkte, dass sobald ich den Mund aufmache, du mir an den Lippen hängst wie ein Besessener. Doch sobald ich Deutsch spreche, siehst du mich an, als würde ich das schönste Gedicht zitieren, dass du jemals gehört hattest.”

Sam didn't understand a single word and he hated it. He really wanted to know what the Scotsman was babbling about.

“Mein Sonnenschein, du bist hier das Einzige, was mich noch bei Verstand hält.”

Colin looked over at Sam and gave him a gentle smile before disappearing from the room with his tea. Sam was left behind. In love and yearning.

[Chapter 2]

Translation:
