rosetail being aromantic is SO funny she's so invested in everyones' relationships and lives but has no interest in them herself she's literally just living for the drama

i hc her as a matchmaker as opposed to just shipping people, loudly, to them. like.. she's the one who gets people like redtail and runningwind together because she's sat there like "Redtail is loyal and patient but Runningwind is impulsive and passionate... they'd make a great match.

Aromantic Rosetail is REAL

I imagine her as the sort of aromantic person who loves the idea of romance, and love being this magic force that she's just waiting to strike her one day... and it never comes. She wants to understand it so badly that she's just blind-guessing who's in love with whom, until it evolves into actually deconstructing the actual idea of romance itself.

I think she'd have a period in her life where she meets it with some despair, realizing that isn't not that she can't have it, but she doesn't want it.

A deep sense of wrongness when she does, at last, have the opportunity. She turns it down.

She eventually has her kittens, happily invoking the Queen's Rights so she doesn't have to bother with the complications of a mate. The sire was out of the Clan, too, just so she would EXTRA not have to worry about it.

Thistleclaw is maaaaaaadddd, but at that point Rosetail is a lot happier with her lifelong friends Thrushpelt and Bluefur, the deputy, than her crummy brother.

Rosetail's kits... albert einstein Redtail and Spottedleaf. She DEFINITELY matchmade Red and Runner.

If you could make one AU canon, what would it be?

oh SO many. so many. but i think AU where clear sky was never redeemed and is the main bad guy of the series. which is impossible bc he is introduced in arc 5 but i really really want it and it makes so much sense.

they could tie it into skyclan’s exile! he could be overseeing all the dark forest stuff! if we want to lean hard into my version of the AU, eldritch clear sky who created/caused the creation of the dark forest!! it would also be thematically appropriate then for him to face off with the other founders in the great battle, a reenactment of the first battle way back in dotc. and it could be interesting with the whole “embrace what you find in the shadows, for only they can clear the sky” thing and skyclan’s return in general—their founder was EVIL, how can we just let them come back?

plus i just love dotc and i want it to have more relevance. i know why it doesn’t, but i still want.

Longtail is my favorite character. I love his character arc, how he acts as a narrative foil to Firestar, and how he starts out as a jerkass but grows to have a backbone, shows himself to be a loyal warrior with a heart of gold where it counts, rejects Tigerstar when lines in the sand have been crossed despite how much he once looked up to him, and eventually grows to be very loyal to Firestar. I wish people talked more about the scene where he saves Fire when Tiger tries to drown him even though they’re not at all on friendly terms yet. Also his mentor-apprentice relationship with Swiftpaw tears me apart but I live for all the fan content that shows their bond and how much regret he has to live with after Swiftpaw’s death.

To this day I have so many gripes with what happened to my boy post-TPB.

If there is a non-death equivalent of TV Tropes’ “Too Cool To Live,” Longtail is basically that. He had to be written out because if he weren’t forcibly removed from the action, then he would be the obvious choice to become deputy during Greystripe’s absence in TNP (and arguably should have been chosen over Greystripe in the first place; I do like Grey but he was not particularly loyal nor responsible in his youth). Longtail was still relatively young, healthy and fit, loyal, experienced, passionate. You cannot convince me that he wasn’t dealt a career-ending injury solely because the plot demanded Brambeclaw become deputy by the end of TNP.

I don’t think Longstar would have ever been realistic to expect because he’s not a central enough character and not related to Fire/Tiger, and because he would have been fairly old for a clan cat by the time of Firestar’s death, but maybe he could have held out as deputy till the end of TNP or even early PO3 and been given a cooler and more memorable death than what he got. But more on that later.

We all know how badly this series shafts its disabled characters. Maybe this is trivial to some, but I really hate the retcon about his blindness. When his vision started failing of natural causes, it was still frustrating for the reasons above but it at least seemed like he made a voluntary choice to retire early. He maintained a degree of agency, and he made his own decision under the circumstances rather than having it taken from him by the narrative. Having him get blinded by a rabbit of all things just feels like a cheap shot to move the plot along. If he were going to have a freak accident, at least make it less stupid than an experienced warrior getting his eyes scratched out by a prey animal.

Not that any of them are handled *well* by any means, but we have roughly this same character arc with so many other characters who are given more depth in coming to terms with a permanent disability or disfigurement and having it alter the course of their lives (Cinderpelt, Brightheart, later on Briarlight…) that we didn’t need this one to happen to prove any kind of point or to say something too much different than any of those other instances.

The silver lining of Longtail’s injury is that it allows us to see more of his friendship with Mousefur than we would have gotten if either of them had died younger, and/or if they had faded to being background characters in the ever-growing ThunderClan roster. I really adore their dynamic. I headcanon them as aroace besties (iirc though this is basically canon for at least Mousefur). I find it so lovely and refreshing that a m/f pair of characters, and ones who are mostly very likable at that, can have a platonic relationship with so much care for each other without it eventually going down the marriage-and-children path that most m/f relationships eventually do in this series.

However.

Longtail’s death, and Mousefur’s role in it, are possibly even more frustrating and narratively awful than even the accident that caused his blindness.

Having him go out in such a cheap and easily preventable way felt like such a fucking slap in the face to these beloved characters who have been around from the very beginning of the series. Longtail had his whole life redefined and turned upside down by one random, frustrating freak accident involving prey and he ultimately lost his life to another one. Mousefur’s character was mishandled so grossly here, and a cat who is usually pretty sensible and grounded lost her best friend because she couldn’t let one (1) mouse go in a moment of what I have to assume is senility.

I am at least glad the two got a proper send-off in the Great Battle, with them getting to reunite on-screen and his spirit guiding her to Starclan after she fell in battle. It doesn’t quite make up for everything else given that Longtail had so much unused potential while alive, but it all would have been so, so much more upsetting if they weren’t given at least that much to close their chapters.

Thank you for coming to my TED Talk about Longtail. He is so dear to my heart and deserved so much better than most of what he got.

not to warrors discourse seriously (lie) but Mousefur is canonically aroace. that is canon.

"but it wasn't stated directly in the books!" Tallstar and Jake weren't stated to be a couple. that's still canon.

see- the thing is, this isn't a "Dumbledore is gay" situation. Dumbledore was never written with any visible intent for him to be gay, there was no subtext, no coding at all. meanwhile Mousefur was very much written to be aroace! in the world of warriors, it's strange for any female character to go without romance(as sucky as that is), and Longtail was right there as a perfect mate for her, but no. she never WANTED a mate or kits or anything of the sort. she was written with the intent to be aroace and was actively coded as such, it just couldn't be put in the books directly for multiple reasons.

if you still try to tell me it's not canon, just say you're an aphobe and move on instead. it's easier for everyone.

I know you said hollyleaf is sapphic but would you consider making her an aroace sapphic? As someone that's an aroace lesbain there's this idea from the wide majority of our society that to be aro you cannot have any romantic attraction. What people forget is that the actual definition of aromantic is “experiencing little or no romantic attraction to anyone; not having romantic feelings.”

For me, I very rarely get any romantic attractions. Im currently 19 and have only truly loved 2 people romantically. I still get gay panic and love women but I do not think id date anyone anytime soon. I'd also add that Id only get in a qpr with a woman/nonbinary person.

Oh friend don't worry! I don't leave ace people out of anything and I'm very aware that being aroace doesn't completely quash all romantic/sexual feelings. I try to fight the good fight against amatonormativity by making sure family and friends are on the same level of importance as romantic pairings and peppering in different flavors of grayace here and there.

I'm not sure that the way I'm approaching Hollyleaf quite fits the idea of being aroace though? She's very attracted to Heathertail, but develops strong feelings for Cinderheart later. She does not return poor Willowshine's affections though, but I do think she felt something for her. Just not strongly. Complicated lesbian dynamics.

If she's ace in this AU, it'd be closer to demisexual sapphic, where she only catches feelings after she has a strong bond.

In canon though I see her as pretty solidly aroace.

So far Bluestar and Firestar are both aro. Firestar is totally aro (him and Sandstorm are queerplatonic), and Bluestar dealt with a whole host of queer feelings, especially towards Oakheart, Barley, Lizardstripe, and the concept of being feminine by her society's standards.

Mousefur's also definitely aroace. Longtail probably is as well. Funny enough I also get the vibe that Rosetail is aro, she seems really obsessed with romantic stuff in that "I'm waiting for it to happen to me!" way that I've seen some aro buddies describe, lmao

I feel like when Fireheart was pining after dead Spottedleaf was the period of time he had a crush on Graystripe. I feel like there was some jealousy for Silverstream. Then he fell for Sandstorm and the rest is history.

Graystripe also fell for Firestar after most of his Silverstream mourning wound down. And then he met Millie.

Mothwing always loved Leafpool. End of discussion.

Leafpool had feelings for Mothwing and Crowfeather at the same time, she just followed Crowfeather because she knew he loved her back.

Darkstripe and Blackfoot had something going on.

Redtail is trans. This is obvious.

Rowanclaw is also trans. Also obvious. Tawnypelt’s surrogate was Cedarheart.

Mosskit is a trans tom! He just didn’t realize it until after death and Bluestar got his pronouns right when she mentioned him to Fireheart!!

Brindleface is actually aroace but she wanted kits and had a one-night stand with Whitestorm for that purpose.

Mousefur and Longtail definitely had a QPR. When Purdy joined it became a polycule.

She didn’t know until right before the Clans left the forest. It was the last thing her mother told her.

Scourge is he/they and I stand by it.

Edit: Also! I like to think Frostfur and Brindleface were found abandoned and taken in by Robinwing so that makes DustFern sliiiiightly more ethical.

Edit 2: Also! Princess said most of she and Firestar’s siblings live nearby and so does Nutmeg. Filou and Luna are a few doors down. Tommy, however, moved to America with his housefolk, hence the Captain America collar on the wiki! And yes all the pride collars are canon.

❓ for me I’d say Heavystep. I know he’s said a couple more than 2-3 lines. But especially in the first 3 arcs he was very minor character. And I love the he’s canonically died twice and that Vicky secretly wanted to write a super edition about how he got extra lives.

👴 fave elder is Mousefur. I love how old and sassy she gets. Her friendship with Longtail is very sweet. Plus I headcannon her as aroace and she’s canonically ace in the WCA series which is cool.

🎥 Moonkitti. Her I spoil series and short videos legitimately made me start reading the series again. I had stopped after Sunrise because I was so upset when Hollyleaf ‘died.’ I knew of the the events of the omen of the stars arc because I tangentially followed. But then I saw her videos about Dawn of the Clans and I was like ‘oh that actually sounds really cool’ so I started reading again!
