119. i wanna play house (1936)

release date: january 11th, 1936

starring: bernice hansen (bear cubs), billy bletcher (papa bear)

the first cartoon to use the trademark rings, as well as the first cartoons to use the cursive “that’s all folks!” sign off! i promise i include the title cards for a reason, some of them have some GREAT art—we’re ever so slowly moving away from the black backgrounds. this is a plus! the first cartoon of 1936, hard to believe that we’re in the second half of the 30s already! as i mentioned in the previous review, a great deal of change will come upon us. frank tashlin and carl stalling make their debuts, jack king leaves the studio, porky sees a rise in popularity (whereas beans has has 15 minutes of fame)... a year where the looniness of looney tunes really starts to break through. next year will be even better! for now, two bear cubs engage in a game of hide and seek, yet things quickly turn sour when one of the curious cubs investigates a bottle of cider.

two bears frolic with each other while their ever so watchful father sleeps. their scrappy fighting turns into a literal, playful fistfight—a fun progression and set up. the black bear hits his grizzly bear twin a tad too hard, and runs away giddily as the angry grizzly chases him. suddenly, the black bear is distracted by a turtle moseying along. inquisitive, the black bear sniffs at the turtle. eventually, the turtle is fed up with its interrogation and bites the bear right on the nose, sending the cub running in pain.

the grizzly bear spots the black bear clutching his nose and laughs. paybacks are hell. fed up, the black bear hurls a rock at the grizzly, who ducks. instead, the rock pegs the hibernating father, snapping awake and lumbers over to his children. both cubs accuse the other, making it impossible to find the perpetrator. slightly gross yet amusing as the papa bear spits into his hand, smacking his palm. the spit lands next to the grizzly bear, and thus the father hones in on him, a callback to the harman-ising days as he pulls down the grizzly’s “butt flap” and gives him a few good spanks.

feeling slightly guilty, the black bear saunters away so as not to watch the punishment unfold. the grizzly eventually joins his sibling, clutching his butt in pain. a great, quick little indicator of personality as the black bear flashes the guiltiest shit eating grin. all rivalry is dissolved once the black bear offers up a game of hide and seek.

as the grizzly counts off, the black bear gallops away. he stumbles across an overlook, towering right over an unoccupied wagon. the perfect hiding place. the curious cub slides down a birch tree, another harman-ising callback as the bear’s body slides in and out, conveniently hitting some branches. the animation comes off as rather mechanical and forced and lacks the momentum that was provided during the harman-ising days—it looks even stiffer than something you may have seen as early as 1930 or 1931 in a bosko cartoon.

the cub tentatively creeps into the wagon. inside, he’s greeted with a cozy array of furniture: a welcoming, fully stocked picnic table, even a stove and some bunk beds. the curious cub instantly takes kindly to the array of food, preparing to indulge. he fixes himself a sandwich while the other grizzly bear remains counting (“503, 504...”). a lovely gag as the hungry cub literally places his towering sandwich in a compress, so as to fit it just right into his mouth.

after taking a few hungry bites of the sandwich, the cub finds a bottle of cider. unaware of its alcoholic contents, the bear happily takes a few swigs too many and instantly becomes inebriated.

i know i always rave about how good bernice hansen’s baby voice is, but it’s phenomenal. this scene it REALLY bursts out into its full hilarious potential. the poor grizzly cub is STILL counting, working up a sweat as he pants “fifteen thousand nine ten... fifteen thousand nine eleven...! fifteen thousand nine eleven! fifteen thousand nine twelve...!” hansen is practically shouting, and the repeated 15,911 is fantastic. her delivery is spot on. it’s hilarious and instantly believable.

meanwhile, the little black cub is obviously drunk, hiccuping and giggling repeatedly. the grizzly cub reaches the millions in his counting, and finally realizes that any intentions of hide and go seek have been thrown out the window. he marches along furiously, ready to find his brother and give him a good talking to.

now, the black cub stands in front of a mirror, fancying himself a green fedora (from, of course, my green fedora). a hiccup sends the hat flying off his head and right onto his butt, much to his drunken confusion. another hiccup sends the hat back into place on his head. thus launches a drunken rendition of “i wanna play house” (albeit with substitute lyrics), the bear doing the same moves as peter did in my green fedora. bernice hansen’s delivery is once more to be commended. the song is obnoxious, yet still cute and hilarious. i especially love the closeup of the bear hiccuping and looking around, covering his mouth and muttering “oh my...” knowingly. even he knows he’s trashed.

finally, the grizzly bear approaches the black bear’s hiding spot, bursting into the wagon. he spots his inebriated sibling, and a tomato to the head interrupts the cub’s drunken performance. the black bear confronts the grizzly bear, and friz freleng’s comedic timing is absolutely IMPECCABLE as they stand still for just a moment, suspended in tension... and all of the sudden they go at it with absolutely no warning whatsoever, a hilarious barrage of slapping sound effects complimenting their erratic tussle. probably one of the funniest scenes i’ve seen so far in this entire adventure.

their scrap moves towards a lever, and the black bear decks the grizzly bear hard enough to send him flying into the lever. the lever turns, and thus the brakes are lifted from the wheels as the wagon slowly crawls forward, gaining speed. the wrestling match is put on hold as the bears peer out the back door of the wagon, realizing they’re stranded on an out of control wagon.

another scene that feels very close to the harman-ising days, animation of the wagon squealing around twists and turns as the cubs hang on for dear life. another callback as the wagon shreds the leaves off of multiple trees (like in bosko’s fox hunt and many others). the bears run around helplessly, panicking at their undecided fate. they both spot the brakes and team up to pull the lever.

great gag of the wheels shrinking in size, becoming smaller and smaller as the brakes work their magic. the shanghaied wagon is put to a halt once and for all after it crashes into a tree, ejecting both bears.

the cider bottle is amongst the debris showering down upon the cubs, and it conks the grizzly bear right in the head. now he, too, becomes trapped in a daze (moreso a concussion, though it could be interpreted as the strange physics present in bosko cartoons where a character would become inebriated on impact if hit with an alcohol bottle). conveniently, the wagon crashed right near the bears’ home, in reach for the father to come rushing to the scene. he spots his son wobbling around and tripping over himself, and then identifies the bottle of cider. a few sniffs confirm his suspicions, and, once more, he undoes the cub’s “butt flap” and gives him a beating. the black cub strides away, whistling “i wanna play house” innocently as ever. the grizzly cub lobs a rock at his sibling, and iris out as the black bear stares back in pained awe.

bernice hansen’s vocals totally make this cartoon, and i don’t think it would have nearly been as effective if it were someone else. her baby voice shines abd makes this cartoon absolutely hilarious. the animation is better in some parts than others (the black bear sliding down the birch tree comes off as particularly stiff), and in all the designs are nothing to write home about, but it doesn’t necessarily feel sloppy either. a lot of callbacks to the harman-ising days, too, which is a nice touch. a relatively decent freleng cartoon. definitely worth a watch just to listen to hansen’s voice.

The Church bathed in sinner’s blood: one-shot.

Here we go, another one. This time with all three brothers, but mostly John and Jacob, because you know me and what I really like. ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°) WARNING: There is a lot of abuse in it. She slipped quietly between the buildings in Joseph's compound, avoiding the sight of the passing Peggies. Conditions were favorable - the night was starless, and the moon was hidden behind the clouds. The only source of light was given by burning here and there bonfires. Good. Even though there were few dogs scanning the area, she managed to slip through them unnoticed. She was favored by the wind direction, which she always paid attention to. Everything was going well. Everything was in perfect order. She didn't see Joseph anywhere - she suspected that he was in the church she was just trying to get into. But she hoped that she was wrong this time, and The Father was somewhere else. She didn't wanted to confront him, not yet, definitely not this night. She wanted to get rid of John and Jacob first. Faith was already just a memory, but Joseph's brothers were still a huge threat to everyone in the County.

And suddenly she froze in place, laying flat on the ground, near the church. Because among the black, quite sleepy dogs, she could see the characteristic glow of silver fur. A wolf, much larger than the average one. With a red cross on its face and the characteristic aura of Bliss surrounding its body. A Judge. She never saw Judges on Joseph's island. Nearly all of them were in the Whitetails. Two times she saw them in the Valley, once in the Henbane. But here? Did Jacob decide to give his brother a present?

And then she understood. She saw tho hunters in their red masks, standing near the dock. They were talking to each other, not really paying attention to what was happening around them. They probably felt safe, since no one before tried to slip to this compound. It probably meant getting killed on spot. It seemed that they would shoot first, and then ask questions. Getting so close to this place wouldn't go unnoticed, she realized. She may be able to get into that church without a problem, but what about getting out and escaping?

And most of all... If there as a Judge here, and two hunters, something important was probably happening in this place. Maybe the whole family decided to gather around and decide what to do after Faith's dead from the Deputy's hands. Maybe they already decided what to do with her, she could only guess. But at this point she was nearly sure that Jacob was somewhere around this place. Maybe John was too, she didn't know. There were no signs of him. It was too late to go back now anyway. She waited for the Judge to dissapearfrom her sight and silently went around the church. She was looking for a window somewhere. She knew that most of them were obscured, but she hoped that she might manage to get around this problem somehow. And with a mild surprise she noticed that two of the windows enabled her to come inside. She paused for a moment and thought about it - it looked suspicious and it was obvious. But she was also aware that there was something in the church that could change the course of this war and help the Resistance. According to reports, key information about the activities of the Eden's Gate was hidden inside the book that layed on Joseph's pedestal. All she had to do was get the book and quickly disappear from the compound, before anyone will manage to get her. Or kill, if someone decides to shoot her first, and then realizes that maybe it would be better to interrogate her.

The struggle against the mechanism of the window took her a few stressful minutes, during which she almost got a heart attack several times. In the end, however, she slipped inside, bending her legs to land as light as possible on the wooden floor. The church was empty, illuminated only with the symbol of Eden's Gate on the top of the wall. Emptiness. There were no signs that someone has been here recently. There was a characteristic smell of dust and something sweet in the air - maybe Bliss, she wasn't sure. She didn't feel dizzy, so it might have been something else.

However, the book of Joseph was in its usual place. It almost seemed to call her, begging her to come closer. Rookie hesitantly approached the pedestal, trying not to make any noise, nervously glancing behind her to make sure that nobody is trying to get inside at the moment. If she was noticed, it would be the end of everything she worked for. This time she surely wouldn't be able to escape. Jacob was letting her to do so because he could always get her back anyway. John, on the other hand, was way to careless, and that's why she managed to escape his bunker after the second kidnapping. But Joseph was quite unpredictable. And she was basically in his home, where she shouldn't be, considering her status in the Resistance. She began to read notes on the actions of the cult, indeed found between the book's pages, feeling their hands tremble. She wanted to get out of here already.

"Have you read these words before?"

She froze, recognizing the voice of Joseph. She swallowed hard and closed the book, turning her eyes to him, seeing him approach her. Instinctively, she took a step back, extending her hand towards the bow suspended on her back. Joseph was unarmed, without his goddamn shirt on, looking at her through yellow aviators. He didn't seem angry. He was neutral, but cautious.

"Have you tried to understand them? Their meaning? Did you feel something in your heart clench, when you realize the truth behind them? Behind my Word?"

"Interpretation of literature has never been my strong point." She answered, trying to remain calm. She was here alone, just with Joseph, who was indeed unarmed, but he had this disturbing aura that make her felt naked and helpless, even though she had also a pistol and a knife in her thigh holster. She grasped the bow with her fingers, trying to take it off her back, ready to take even the most risky actions. One arrow could make it all end. One arrow and probably her life as well. Cultists would kill her in a most painful way imaginable when they would see what the had done. Was it worth it? Probably. Did she have courage to do it, though? She wasn't sure. Deep inside, she was a coward. No matter how many life she took, how bravely she tried to act, refusing to confess or trying to win the fight with Jacob's conditioning. There was always fear inside of her.

But soon she realized that she couldn't kill Joseph, because he wasn't alone. John came out of the darkness like a stray cat, with his hands behind his back. His blue eyes shone ominously in the half-light. He looked at her enigmatically abd she was not sure if he wanted to kill her at this point, or to torture her first. She knew, however, that she was in a bad situation. She didn't think she would find John in compound. She saw two hunters and Judge before, evidently indicating that the eldest of three brothers was here. Where was he then?

She already knew.

Taking two more steps back, she stepped off the platform, slowly turning her head back. Jacob blocked access to the exit from the church. Deputy understood that she had no chance for escape. Tensing the bowstring and getting the arrow on it would take her maybe a second and a half. Too long - Jacob had a knife and his characteristic red gun in his holster. John probably hid something under a long trench coat. She had no chance. They would react faster.

"You have deviated from the path that is right for you, but do not worry, my child. We will help you find it once again." Joseph's voice was calm, too calm. Sweet and disturbing, it made the woman sick. Her hands trembled a little, so she clenched them into fists. She already knew what was coming. She realized it when she glanced at John, only to see his eerie smile. He seemed amused and she knew why. He will get what he wanted. He will get to put a knife in her body and make her scream.

"No." She denied with a growl in her voice. She looked behind her back again, seeing that Jacob come closer. Instinctively, she tried to reach for her knife - she didn't make it, though. The oldest Seed brother was faster and painfully grabbed her wrist, throwing the knife aside, also depriving her of the pistol and pulling off the bow of her back. He grabbed both of her hands, holding them in an iron grip behind her. The woman tried to struggle, gritting her teeth furiously. "I do not agree to take part in your fucking rituals." She hissed, still trying to remain calm. Bark, hiss, but without shouting, without screaming. It would only please them, she knew it. She throwed her head up, trying in this way to brush away the strands of hair falling on her face. "You know very well who I am and that you can't change me. YOU KNOW IT."

Joseph didn't react in any way. He looked at her calmly, then turned to his brother. "Jacob." The Soldier tried to pull her down. However, when Deputy didn't give in, he painfully kicked her in the inner side of the knee. The woman clenched her teeth, suppressing the scream and forced to kneel, still feeling Jacob's hands gripping her iown, painfully twisted behind her back. She looked to her right, out of the corner of her eye noticing his thigh holster. So close, yet... So far away. She was sure that Jacob was smiling mockingly, even though she couldn't see his face.

And then John started to come closer. He had a knife in his hand. And oh god, he was smiling, as always. She would give everything to wash that smile of his face. He knew what she was thinking, somehow every member of this damn family always knew what she was thinking about and they surely were proud of it. Always one step ahead of her. Always on top. Kings of the world.

"Hello, Deputy." The youngest Seed kneeled in fron of her, still smiling, playing with the knife in his hand. "I truly missed you. And I realized... I still don't know your name." He looked at her curiously and clicked his tongue, then asked mockingly. "Will you do me the honor and reveal this secret?"

She smiled coldly at the corner of her mouth. "Not in your wildest dreams."

Youngest Seed closed his eyes for a moment, then sighed. Jacob shifted from foot to foot, apparently not too interested in the conversation, even a bit irritated. "John, don't play with food." He muttered with a hint of amusement, squeezing the woman's wrists harder as soon as she tried to struggle again. "Especially that this one likes to bite."

"In that case, I will cut off her teeth." He replied nonchalantly, then with one stroke of the knife he cut the left arm of her t-shirt, then pulling the blouse off her shoulders. He looked her in the eye. She felt trapped in his - the light blue iris of his had an almost hypnotizing effect. "This is really gonna hurt, my dear."

"Pain for pain." She replied bitterly, smiling slightly, mockingly. "Yours is gonna be much worse. This is the promise I can give you."

"I would like to see you try." And this was the last thing he said, right before he drove the knife into her collarbone, slowly engraving the first letter in her body. The pain hit her suddenly. The woman hissed, suppressing the squeak of a frightened child, nailing her fingers in Jacob's hand that held her wrists. She let the air out of her lungs slowly, feeling the warm blood run down her chest. Joseph stood at the back, looking at everything calmly. John, on the other hand, was incredibly focused on his task - as if he tried to make the letters perfectly straight. She thought that he wanted to disfigure and embellish her at the same time. Maybe he actually saw it as a one and the same thing. SHe didn't know. He was one big puzzle. Each brother was drastically different, and she wasn't able to fully decipher them. Deputy had a feeling that during those few weeks in Hope County she only touched the surface and knew basically nothing about the threat that they posed.

She knew that the scuffle wasn't worth anything at this point. She gave in, breathing heavily, feeling the sweat running down her skin. She lowered her head and narrowed her eyes, hissing quietly with each stroke of the knife. Feeling the fascinated gaze of John Seed on her body, adoringly staring at the bloody picture that he painted on her pale, wet skin. On her collarbone, then both of her arms and the last one on her back. Four sins. Four out of seven.

WRATH.

PRIDE.

GREED.

ENVY.

"Aaaaah. Perfect." He stood up and stepped back a few steps, looking at Rookie. Blood trickled down her body, coloring her clothes with bloody red. Jacob stood behind her, unmoving.

"It's over, my child." Joseph said gently and came closer, then looked toward the exit. "Now, take her where she belongs, brother."

"Get up." Jacob's order was icy, and it effectively forced her to get up, despite the tearing pain. She didn't fight him; she wanted to stay calm. She allowed him to move her out of the church. When they went outside, she saw the first rays of the sun leaning out from behind the horizon. Early dawn. It seemed that she managed to survive another day, though how was it possible, she couldn't understand. Joseph still believed she could be saved. Be she didn't even want to. Not to mention that the didn't believe in God's existence.

Peggies watched her from a safe distance. The silence was interrupted by their whispers and barking of dogs. Judge, whom she had seen before, growled in her direction. She didn't pay attention to any of it. She just waited. Waited for a good moment to react, because she knew where she was going to be taken to. They would close her in one of the bunkers, in the deepest darkness of it, to make sure she will never escape again. She would spend the rest of her life in there, with no chance to escape. Forced to imagine all those things the cult would do to the innocent people in the county.

"Go to hell, all of you."

And this one time in her life, she turned out to be faster than Jacob. She broke free of the weakened grip, pulling out the knife from his thigh holster, turning it between her fingers and quickly trying to cut his thigh. The soldier avoided the attack, however, knocking her hand to the side. She growled as the pain in the fresh wounds spoke with another dose of dull pain, but she clenched her teeth.

"Kill the sinner!" Peggies whispers turned into surprised and furious cries and commands. "CULL THE HERD! KILL THE HERETIC!" One of Jacob's hunters got his bow, ready to shoot.

"No!" Jacob protested, spitting to the side. "She's mine. Step back, all of you."

And so they did. No one would dare to disrespect the Herald. He seemend somehow amused that she did what she did. Almost like he expected it, waited for it. He even smiled slightly, looking at her ominously.

"And there you are. You never cease to amaze me." He growled, than sighed. "Still, you're nothing but a lost cause, honey. You're only putting off the inevitable."

"I'm not gonna be your slave. Not yours, or anyone else's." Deputy spat, breathing heavily. She had a pose typical for a predator, though uncertain whether it intended to attack or defend itself. Jacob saw this hesitation and chuckled darkly, flashing his white teeth for a split second.

"Don't have such a high opinion of yourself." He replied mockingly, standing in front of her, casting his shadow on her. She felt overwhelmed. Like an animal in a cage trying to fight for freedom. "You are not a slave, you are only a tool. And you belong to me."

It took him just two steps to get to her. He rolled his fingers into a fist, wanting to hit her again and this time to knock the knife out of her fingers. However, she jumped back. The bear fought with the wolf. Or was it really a wolf's fight with a lamb? She circled him in a semicircle and tried to cut his wrist. They both knew that the hands were crucial here, and damaging it could weigh on victory. Out of the corner of her eye she saw calm Joseph standing at the entrance to the church. John was silent as well, even though his eyes were full of rage, watching everything from the side.

And Jacob turned out to be not only strong; but also extremely fast. The woman knew that her only chance was to fight for time. It will be better to launch an attack when her opponent gets tired - especially since he has again parried her blow without much difficulty. The tearing pain in her body still tormented her, but she didn't give up. She tried to transform suffering into strength. Turn the brothers' weapons against them. Jacob snarled and took advantage of the opportunity he was just given - he slammed the woman's feet, knocking her off balance. She didn't fall to the ground, but she lost valuable time trying to keep upright. And the soldier didn't hesitate - he hit her right into the stomach, taking her breath away and sending another injection of pain over her whole delicate body. She moaned, bending even more in herself, but at the same time tightening her grip on the knife she tried to stab the man's thigh with. Or at least she wanted him to believe it. And he believed - he tried to move his leg out of her reach, while the knife suddenly changed its trajectory and cut the skin on the left side of Jacob's ribs. The worst part, however, was that he didn't seem to mind it. He just hissed, apparently not very impressed, but it sure boiled up his rage. Rookie jumped two steps back, quickly trying to return to a state that would allow her to breathe normally. She saw drops of blood running down the knife's edge. It slightly lifted her spirits. She achieved at least this.

Her satisfaction, however, was short. Too short to be noticed at all. Another punch that Jacob had sent straight hitted her right to the neck. She couldn't avoid this, she was too slow and too weak. She began to suffocate and fell to the ground, dropping the knife and grabbing her throat with both hands, choking silently.

"Enough?" He asked, coming closer. And the woman made a mistake - she tried to jump on him, despite her tragic state. She only managed to gouge her nails in his neck and aim a not very accurate, or severe blow to the man's face. His head slightly bounced off to the side, but at the expense of this small success she got a strong kick in her abdomen that sent her to the ground again. She was kneeling in front of him now, still choking. It was pathetic, she knew it - but Jacob certainly liked it. John as well, because she heard his loud, mocking laugh.

She howled when a strong hand was tangled in her hair and pulled her up. She tried to grab Jacob's arm with hands to minimize the pain, but it didn't help. He lifted her to his own level, and she lost ground under her feet.

"You are weak." He muttered hoarsely, almost disgusted. She felt as if he spat on her. Maybe he even wanted to - but apparently he stopped himself. He dropped her, watching her fall down just before his legs, curling up, fighting for the possibility of breathing, and trying to stop the urge to howl in pain at all costs.

She lost.

Pictured: the most indicative image of my (now kind of annual) spring break north east trip. This snap was sent to my mom--screenshotted over text--to elicit a reaction about the word ‘yeet’. The following exchanged occurred: “what’s a yeet and what are you eating?” “It was a faro bowl with roasted carrots and broccoli. You should ask [my little brother] what a yeet is, he knows better than I.” lmfao//a photo from National, where I had a super brief layover flying home yesterday. There’s something about the sight of monuments that can stick with you, and I really enjoyed the sensation of seeing the Washington Monument and knowing my family was close and that I’d be with them next month

I am finally home from my amazing ABD celebration vacation. Ev and I had a dope weekend together in Providence, Meg and I watched all of the hp movies (except 2 bc the disc was broken and we couldn't stream it and like...not worth the effort to try and find a dvd somewhere) and ate/talked for the entire week and...I did absolutely zero work other than responding to emails. The whole shebang was fucking sublime.

I am currently freshly showered, in my bed with clean sheets bc E did the laundry for me today :) I have several museum posts I want to make at some point over the weekend but they will wait until I have slept for many hours.

Why do the Shi‘ah prostrate on turbah {dried clay}? Reply: Some think that prostration on the earth orturbah taken from the burial site of martyrs is tantamount to worshipping it and consider it a form of polytheism {shirk}. In reply to this question, it must be noted that there is a great difference between the phrase, “as-sujud lillah” {prostration for Allah}, and “as-sujud ‘ala’l-ard” {prostration on earth}. The problem of the mentioned people is that they fail to distinguish between the meanings of the two phrases. It is clear that the meaning of “as-sujud lillah” is “prostration for the sake of Allah” while “as-sujud ‘ala’l-ard” means “prostration on the earth”. In other words, by prostrating on earth we prostrate for the sake of God, and in principle, all Muslims of the world prostrate on something for the sake of God. All pilgrims to the House of God prostrate on the stones of Masjid al-Haram in the same way but their aim is prostrating for the sake of God. Given this, it becomes clear that prostration on earth, plant byproduct, etc. does not mean worshipping them but it means prostrating for the sake of God and worshipping Him by lowering oneself and getting close to earth. Similarly, it becomes clear that prostration on turbah is different from prostration for turbah. On one hand, the Holy Qur’an states: "ولله يسجد من في السموات والأرض." “To Allah prostrates whoever there is in the heavens and the earth.”1 Also, the Holy Prophet (S) says: ”جُعِلَتْ لِيَ الأَرْضُ مَسْجِداً وَ طَهُوْراً.“ “The (pure) earth has been made for me as a place of prostration and an agent of purification.” Therefore, “prostration for God” and “prostration onearth or turbah” are not only far from being inconsistent but they agree with each other completely. This is because prostration on earth or plant byproduct represents the highest form of meekness and humbleness before the One and Only God. In order to clarify the Shi‘ah view, it is worth pointing to part of a speech by our great leader—Imam as-Sadiq (‘a): عن هشام ابن الحكم قال: قلت لأبي عبد الله: أخبرني عما يجوز السجود عليه وعمّا لا يجوز؟ قال: السجود لا يجوز إلا على الأرض أو ما أنبتت الأرض إلا ما أكل أو لبس. فقلت له جعلت فداك ما العلّة في ذلك؟ قال لأن السجود هو الخضوع لله عز وجلّ فلا ينبغي أن يكون على ما يؤكل و يلبس لأن أبناء الدنيا عبيد ما يأكلون ويلبسون. الساجد في سجوده في عبادة الله عز وجلّ فلا ينبغي أن يضع جبهته في سجوده على معبود أبناء الدنيا الذين اغتروا بغرورها. والسجود على الأرض أفضل لأنه أبلغ في التواضع والخضوع لله عز وجلّ. Hisham ibn al-Hakam says: “I asked Abu Abd Allah (Imam as-Sadiq) (‘a) regarding the things on which one is allowed to prostrate and the things on which one is not allowed to prostrate.” The Imam said: “Prostration is permissible only on earth and whatever grows in it excluding the edible and wearable.” I asked: “May I be your ransom! What is the reason?” He replied: “In prostration one shows humility and obeisance to God, the Honorable and Glorious, and so it is not proper to perform it on anything edible or wearable because materialists are slaves to things which they eat and wear while in prostration man is in a state of worshipping God, the Honorable and Glorious. Thus, it is not appropriate for one to place his forehead on something which stubborn materialists worship. Prostration on earth is the best way of prostration because it is the most appropriate way of showing humility and meekness to God, the Honorable and Glorious.2 This lucid statement clearly testifies that prostration on earth is performed as the most suitable way of expressing humility and meekness to the One and Only God. * * * Also, this question may be posed: Why do the Shi‘ah prostrate only on earth or some plant byproducts and why do they not prostrate on other things? The reply is: Just as the act of worship should emanate from the sacred law of Islam, its conditions, parts and ways of performance should be explained in the light of the Holy Prophet’s (S) words and actions; for, the Messenger of Allah (S), according to the Holy Qur’an, is an exemplar of excellence for the entire humanity. Now, we shall state some Islamic traditions {ahadith} that elucidate the conduct and lifestyle of the Prophet (S)—all of which indicate that the Prophet (S) used to prostrate on pure earth and on things that grow from it including straw mat, which is exactly the same method which the Shi‘ah follow: 1. A group of hadith scholars {muhaddithun} recount the statement of the Prophet (S) in which he defines the earth as the place of his prostration, when he says: ”جُعِلَتْ لِيَ الأَرْضُ مَسْجِداً وَ طَهُوْراً.“ “The (pure) earth has been made for me as a place of prostration and an agent of purification.”3 From the word “ja‘ala” {“made”} which is used here to have a legal and legislative sense, meaning (“ordained”), we understand that this issue is a decree ordained by the Divine for the followers of Islam to abide by. This proves the legitimacy of prostration on earth, stone, and some other parts of the ground. 2. A group of narrations verify the fact that the Holy Prophet (S) used to order the Muslims to place their forehead on (pure) earth while prostrating. Umm Salamah, a spouse of the Prophet (S), narrates that the Prophet (S) said: "تراب وجهك لله." “Place your face for the sake of Allah on earth.”4 And from the word “tarrib” in the statement of the Prophet (S), two points can be inferred; one is that at the time of prostration one should place his forehead on “turab”, i.e. dust; and the other is that this act is a binding order because the word “tarrib” which comes from “turab” meaning “dust” has been expressed in the form of command. 3. The conduct of the Holy Prophet (S) in this respect is another vivid proof and a good guide for the Muslims. Wa’il ibn Hajar says: "رأيت النبيّ صلى الله عليه وأله وسلم – إذا سجدا وضع جبهته وأنفه على الأرض." “I noticed that whenever the Prophet (S) prostrated, he would place his forehead and nose on the earth.”5 Anas ibn Malik, Ibn al-‘Abbas, some spouses of the Prophet (S) such as ‘A’ishah and Umm Salamah and a large group of muhaddithun thus narrate: "كان رسول الله صلى الله عليه وأله وسلم يُصلّي على الخمرة." “The Messenger of Allah (S) used to prostrate onkhumrah (a mat made from palm fibers).”6 Abu Sa‘id al-Khudri, a Companion of the Messenger of the Allah (S), says: "دخلت على رسول الله صلى الله عليه وأله وسلم وهو يصلّي على حصير." “Once I came to the Messenger of Allah (S) and saw him praying on a straw mat.”7 This statement is another proof which supports the Shi‘ah view that prostration on whatever grows in the earth other than what is eaten or worn is permissible. 4. The sayings and actions of the Companions and the Followers {tabi‘un} of the Prophet (S) also affirm this Sunnah: Jabir ibn ‘Abd Allah al-Ansari says: "كنت أصلي الظهر مع رسول الله صلى الله عليه وأله وسلم فأخذ قبضة من الحصاء لتبرد في كفّي اضعها لجبهتي أسجد عليها لشدة الحرّ." I used to perform noon {zuhr} prayer with the Messenger of Allah (S). Because it was very hot I used to take a handful of small gravel, keep it in my hand till it got cool, and place my forehead on it for prostration.8 Then, the narrator adds: “If prostration on the garment worn by someone were permissible, it would be easier than keeping a gravel (in one’s hand). Ibn Sa‘d (d. 209 AH), in his book, At-Tabaqat al-Kubra, thus writes: "كان مسروق إذا خرج يخرج بلبنة يسجد عليها في السفينة." “Whenever Masruq (ibn Ajda‘) traveled, he used to keep a mud-brick with him on which to prostrate while onboard the ship.”9 It is necessary to note that Masruq ibn Ajda‘ was one of the Followers and a companion of Ibn Mas‘ud, and the author of At-Tabaqat al-Kubra considers him among those in the first class of the Kufans after the Prophet (S) and among those who narrated from Abu Bakr, ‘Umar, Uthman, ‘Ali, and ‘Abd Allah ibn Mas‘ud. This explicit statement establishes the groundlessness of the claim that bringing along a piece of turbah {dried clay} is an act of polytheism and innovation in religion {bid‘ah} and makes clear that the forerunners in the history of Islam used to prostrate like that also.10 Nafi‘ says: "إن ابن عمر كان إذا سجد وعليه العمامة يرفعها حتَّى يضع جبهته بالأرض." “Whenever (‘Abd Allah) ibn ‘Umar prostrated, he removed his turban so as to place his forehead on the ground.”11 Rizin says: "كتب إليّ عليّ بن عبد الله بن عباس رضى الله عليه أن ابعث إليّ بلوح من أحجار المروة أسجد عليه." “‘Ali ibn ‘Abd Allah ibn ‘Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him) wrote to me: ‘Send me a tablet of the stones of Mount Marwah so that I may prostrate on it.”12 5. Also, hadith scholars narrate that the Holy Prophet (S) has prohibited people from placing part of their turbans between their forehead and the ground while prostrating. Salih as-Saba’i says: "إن رسول الله صلى الله عليه وأله وسلم رأى رجلاً يسجد بجنبه قد أعتم على جبهته فسحر رسول الله صلى الله عليه وأله وسلم عن جبهته." Once the Messenger of Allah (S) saw a person prostrating beside him, with his turban covering his forehead. The Messenger of Allah (S) removed the turban from the person’s forehead.13 ‘Ayyad ibn ‘Abd Allah al-Qarashi says: "رأى رسول الله صلى الله عليه وأله وسلم رجلاً يسجد على كور عمامته فأوما بيده: إرفع عمامتك وأومأ إلى جبهته." “The Messenger of Allah (S) saw a person prostrating on part of his turban, so he gestured to him to remove (that part of) the turban, pointing to his forehead.”14 From these traditions it becomes clear that in the time of the Holy Prophet (S) the need to prostrate on earth was beyond dispute and it was such that if one of the Muslims put part of his turban between his forehead and the ground, he would be prohibited by the Prophet (S) from doing so. 6. The infallible Imams followed by the Shi‘ah who, according to the Hadith ath-Thaqalayn, are the inseparable peer of the Qur’an, as well as members of the Prophet’s Household {Ahl al-Bayt}, emphasize this fact in their speeches: Imam as-Sadiq (‘a) says: "السجود على الأرض فريضة وعلى الخمرة سنة." “Prostration on the earth is obligatory while prostrating on a straw mat is a sunnah.”15 He (‘a) also says: "السجود لا يجوز على الأرض أو على ما أنبتت الأرض إلا ما أكل أو لبس." “It is not permissible to prostrate on anything except the earth or what grows in it excluding that which is eaten or worn.”16 Conclusion From the aggregate of the stated proofs, it becomes very clear that not only the traditions of the Ahl al-Bayt (‘a) but also the Sunnah of the Messenger of Allah (S) and the actions of his Companions and Followers {Tabi‘un} testify to the necessity of prostrating on the earth and what grows in it (excluding that which is worn and eaten). In addition, the permissibility of prostration on the mentioned things is definite whereas the permissibility of prostration on other things is doubtful and disputable. Therefore, by precaution—which is the way to attain deliverance and uprightness—it is appropriate to prostrate on the mentioned things only. Finally, it should be noted that this discussion is afiqhi question and differences among Muslim jurists concerning such minor issues are very common, but such differences should not be a source of concern because these differences are also common among the four Sunni fiqhi schools. For example, the Malikis say that placing the nose on the place of prostration is recommended {mustahabb} while the Hanbalis consider it obligatory {wajib} and say that ignoring it renders the prayer invalid {batil}.17 1. If we sign David Turnbull this week for £3 million, it will take our transfer outlay for this window to a sexy £14 million without even taking into account the fee we would have had to pay for Elyounoussi, and all this before the club brings in the central defender we’ve been looking for.

All in all, it looks set to be a mammoth one for Celtic … the biggest, maybe, since Martin O’Neill was at the club, and all of it net spend at the moment.

Right now, it feels significant. But we always wonder how significant and in what way?

Ask someone about the prospect of us spending £15 million upwards and they’ll tell you Celtic would only do that if we stood to recoup £30 million in fees. That gets alarm bells ringing when you consider that Eddie would probably command that staggering sum.

It makes one wonder what the rest of this window might hold for us … and not in a good way.

But there are other saleable assets of course, such as Ryan Christie, Callum McGregor and Kris Ajer, who would all comfortably fetch eight figures and then some. Indeed, all three of those guys would get Dembele style money … £20 million or thereabouts.

The thing is, there’s no sign that any of these guys would be allowed to leave.

The only one who might head off into the sunset in this window is Ajer, because he’s not on a long team deal like the rest of them and, in my view, is probably not of the calibre you’d expect if you were a club paying a whopping fee like those which have been touted for him.

The way I see it, a central defender worth that kind of money would be wasted in the SPL anyway; I would have no problem with the club accepting somewhere between £15 million and £20 million for Ajer if the offer came in, as long as his replacement was lined up … a stretch of course considering we’ve yet to get one central defender in yet.

But we could replace Kris Ajer for half that, and still get a footballer who would walk into any team in this league. This is why I would be quite ambivalent about it if he moved on … provided, as I say, we got that replacement in and right quick.

McGregor and Christie would be harder to replace. Callum because he’s the best midfielder in the country on his day, and Christie because he is a hard working machine who’s got good feet, can score goals, covers every blade of grass and is only going to improve.

To let go of either player, they’d need to want to go and badly enough that those at the club felt it better not to keep them around. I cannot believe that of McGregor, and have serious doubts that Ryan Christie would be banging that drum behind the scenes.

That boy was born to play for Celtic, and he waited for his chance like few others.

His moment is now, and he’s going to be part of the folklore here.

Questions about who might go to pay for all this seem even more valid in light of the global health crisis and the stark need for teams to make cuts. We’ve accepted the reality in this in a way the club across the city hasn’t. If we fail to make the Champions League Groups, then I’d say something does have to give and someone’s going to have to go.

But that, too, might be part of the calculus here. Maybe, for once, we’re gambling big for the big reward, and not just the Champions League, of course. Can you even imagine the merchandising opportunities to celebrate the securing of the ten?

I know people inside Celtic are eagerly anticipating them.

I think that’s part of the calculation, and so too is this; we know that next summer, if we’ve won it, that we can dismantle much of this team, and allow the likes of Eddie and Ajer and Christie to go if that’s what they want, with the prize already secure, and do a radical rebuilding job for the next phase of the club’s dominance.

In short, we could take a one-season hit, to get over this line, knowing that next summer we can sell some of the big names and do a rebuilding job.

No-one at Celtic will want to give up a league title, and especially not to that bunch across the city, but I think ten could collapse them like a house of cards.

That would afford us an unprecedented opportunity to seal our top spot in this country for another decade at least. Next summer will almost certainly see tremendous upheaval and change at both clubs … but we’d be financially strong whilst they’d be staggeringly weak, and that would tell in the respective strengths of the playing squads.

So perhaps we are going to take this one on the chin, to put ten in a row in the bank, and then to work on the squad plans for next season having taken some major changes into account. Maybe we just reckon on having a better chance of those Champions League Groups if we push the boat out now and take our shot, rather than being passive about it.

And perhaps a top player has already agreed a move and so we know how all this is being paid for. That’s possible, of course it is. But I don’t know how that could have been done without the media being aware of it and without some obvious signs …

I mean, if you were a suspicious person you could point to Ajer’s being dropped, for example, and take it a sign, but I don’t think that one stands up when you look at it. This just doesn’t feel like a Morelos type situation, not with a player who is a model of professionalism.

Either way, when we do land our central defender – and more and more it looks like it’ll be Duffy coming in – we can evaluate where we are and how things stand. Rogic will almost certainly leave in this window, and if we can £5 million that will pay for some of this, although by no means all of the business that’s been transacted.

I have to be honest and say that I’m pleasantly surprised that we’ve spent big in this window, and on the kind of quality which can go straight into the first team.

Not for us, this season, with projects or punts. The three we’ve brought in are first team footballers.

Duffy would walk into this side. Turnbull will be no bit-part player either, but a regular starter.

Something has definitely changed in the way we’re doing things, and it might even have started last year with the deals for Forster, Abd Elhamed and Jullien … straightforward first eleven footballers. I suspect we didn’t realise what we had on our hands with Frimpong, and we probably thought Bolingoli would do us a turn on the left … which is why he cost £3 million.

That proves only that mistakes will be made from time to time – no strategy is perfect, after all, and it won’t be bad performances that end Boli’s time at Celtic, it’ll be his stunning breach of health protocols, from which there’s no way back.

But this is surely a better way to do business than taking punts on potential all the time, a system which has paid some dividends but also left us the likes of Bayo, Eboue, Shved and others going back to the likes of Balde, Pukki, Rasmussen and the rest.

We’ve brought in a lot of money over the years, but we’ve squandered a lot of it as well.

That’s definitely something that has focussed a lot of minds at Celtic Park in the last wee while, and has resulted in Nick Hammond doing a major re-organisation behind the scenes. It’s a general stepping up of the game in terms of scouting and everything else.

Notice, too, the focus on undervalued assets in England such Elyounoussi, Forster, Ajeti and now Duffy. Couple that with Turnbull and, last season, the signing Greg Taylor … there’s a focus on the UK which we haven’t seen at this club in a long time, which isn’t to say we won’t pick up premium players from other locales … France remains a strong scouting ground, and we went to Greece this season in order to find our first choice goalkeeper.

I’m only surprised we haven’t better utilised the Bosman market … that might be a recognition that the kind of players who can visibly improve our squad will command astronomical wages as a result of being freebies, and it might be the reason we’ve been put off.

The overall trend seems positive, to me, and if the board has decided to spend big in this window it’s because this is the window in which to do it, with everything that’s at stake in this special, special season. The suspicion that it will be paid for with a top class departure is a reasonable fear to have, but there’s no indication that it’s justified.

Even if it proves to be, you have to look at the overall strength of the squad and where it stands when the window shuts … and at the moment, we’ve let go some fringe footballers whose injury profiles didn’t justify new deals and those we’ve brought have been of a high quality.

Turnbull will give the midfield an extra dimension as Ajeti has up front, we know what we’re getting with Elyounoussi and Barkas should be solid and dependable. Duffy would be a major upgrade at central defence. Few would argue that we look weaker overall, and those who would are wrong because it’s clear that we’ll have improved where it matters.

So right now, I’m pleased with it all … there’s something developing, and you can see that.

If we’re all a little bit antsy about the time it’s taking to sign a centre back, I’m sure we all recognise that if it’s Duffy or someone of that calibre that it will have been worth taking the time on to get it right … the only other question will be as to whether someone’s going.

Hey okay whatever, i have thought of loke 5 different ways to kindly, gently tell you that you habe left me on read for 5 months and have made no indication of wanting to respond to me and that im feeling hurt. But i just want to send an onslaughy of questions and demands at you about this goddamn behavior!! You called me out wheb i acted a poor friend and you have used me as an example of a considerate friendship that listens to critique ib order to be stronger, AND YET HERE WE ARE. ugh why does it seem that my friendship is not worth preserving?? Anthem Blue Cross Dental Net I was referred to an oral surgeon by my primary care dentist since I have to have 6 teeth and 2 residual root tips extracted in advance of getting a full upper denture. All the extractions including the root tips have to be done during one visit, which necessitates the use of IV sedation. My general dentist cannot perform any of this work. Anthem Blue Cross Dental Net denied the original pre-authorization request, and subsequent appeal stating that my general dentist can perform the services being referred. Which is absolutely not the case. I even spoke with a customer service rep who indicated that the extraction of residual root tips is definitely a referable service and it clearly states that in their Dental Net Provider Contract. She has no explanation for why the appeal was denied. My primary care dentist has even provided Anthem Blue Cross Dental Net with his specific reasons for referring this work to an oral surgeon and I still can't get anyone at Anthem Blue Cross to re-evaluate the original denial and the appeal and authorize the necessary work. Ok, so this is a little complicated... Oct 2008 I had a car accident. My car was written off. My car was towed to a garage and was held there while the insurance company evaluated the damage.
