What is Daffy Duck, if not someone who gives people a hard time 🙏😔 we pray 4 u
TRULY!! THIS IS TANGENTIAL but this ask makes me smile BECAUUUSEEE... i've said it before but a very big part of my art process is connecting and communicating with the characters. making sure the characters i draw are authentic and feel like i'm drawing THE character (rather than presenting a drawing of the character) is one of my biggest artistic priorities. and to achieve that, i try to get into the mindset of the characters as much as i can. sometimes that's thinking like them, thinking of their mannerisms, and thinking of how they would react to me drawing them. i think of myself as a director telling them how to pose or what to look like, while also putting myself in their shoes and thinking how i would react to that
THIS IS A VERY CONVOLUTED WAY TO SAY some characters obviously take direction better than others. i think i'm mainly saying this because Daffy is my bread and butter, i have higher standards drawing him because it is extremely important that i get him right! so of course i'm going to struggle more in the process. but when this happens, i always chalk it up to him being "difficult" because it's certainly in character for him. of course he would be uncooperative! this is silly but it gives me a lot of amusement and also takes some of the edge off when i want to put my fist through the screen LOL
BUT YES thank you :) the good news is that i'm making progress! i've resigned myself to understanding that it's gonna take however long it takes. i'm only ever gonna review this once so i might as well make it count! likewise it's a very very important cartoon to me, so there's more to blab about so obviously that's going to take longer. when i was starting out i was getting 5 reviews out a day, but i need to remind myself that this entire project has exploded into something so much more than what it used to be in the 4 and a half years that i've been doing this HAHA.
thank you for your patience regardless, it's been fun to write in spite of all the hurdles and i can't wait to get all the screenshots together. look at him

i love stumbling across old posts like these, embarrassed as them as i may be now. i made this just as i was getting into LT and realizing that golden age cartoons were my missing link--i was at a very low and messy point in my life, lot of changes happening and i was in a pretty deep depression and didn't have very much motivation to keep going on
and now i'm glad to be at a period where i can look at posts like these and be like "GUESS WHAT!!!!!" no, i did not live up to my hilariously stupid expectations that my first industry gig would be as a showrunner with no prior experience in anything at all beforehand, but i am working my literal dream job of being a storyboard artist on SpongeBob, have worked on multiple SpongeBob properties, been invited to speak on an official Nickelodeon podcast, have met and mingled with the voice actors--some multiple times--and gushed about how much they mean to me, have worked with so many gracious and kind people, some lifelong inspirations who have returned the favor and said i was an inspiration to THEM!!! every day i get to sit down and draw cartoons, hash out ideas with coworkers from all over the globe, get to sit in on storyboard pitches and see as our episodes eventually come to life and hope that it makes the kid or adult or some other third thing watching as happy as it makes me.
i've received other dream job offers, i've been lucky enough to have the opportunity to travel to LA and put my face out there and meet so many great peers and inspirations. my love of cartoons is only growing stronger, my language and articulation of how and why they mean so much to me has only grown with my experience with work and doing my cartoon analyses and write-ups (which even my coworkers who i haven't seen in over a year are talking about as i meet up with them in LA!!). i'm drawing daily and can feel my skills growing more and more, every day i make a point to watch a cartoon i've never seen before, i get to find new ways to inject and spread my love and hope that it can inspire other people to do the same...
it's just touching. really touching! i am incredibly vigilant about not taking any of my circumstances for granted, but i can still be very hard on myself just the same, thinking i'm not drawing enough art in my free time or that my reviews are incoherent or that i'm not meeting my own quota for them, that i'm actually a HORRIBLE HACK FRAUD OF AN ARTIST AND AM INCHES FROM BEING FIRED AT ANY TIME! GASP! i'm usually good about not projecting these insecurities because i know it's just the ol' noggin being dumb, whining about it certainly does no favors, and the only thing i can do to remedy any of this is to keep on keeping on. BUT! i say that because as much as i get wrapped up in that thinking, it's important to sit back and analyze all that i've accomplished, whether in the past 10 years, 5 years, or even 5 minutes from now
just very thankful to be where i'm at. glad to be in the position to even be writing this in the first place! glad that i even have people who care enough to take the time to read this. i have succeeded in my mission of becoming a cartoonist--a professional one!!--and i at least hope i've succeeded in making other people laugh and/or happy. i'm going to pursue both for as long as i live. it will get better, there is a future worth living and pursuing and fighting for--just because you can't see that in the moment doesn't mean it's not there. fate does exist. i know it may seem easy for me to be saying all this right now given all of what i typed above, but there was a point in time where all of this wasn't the case! iunno. but in spite of it all, i'm happy to be doing what i'm doing and hope to be doing it for a long time. hope this could give anyone who needs it a little boost, or at least a reminder that things do work themselves out in mysterious ways. we're all in this together
fuck i can’t wait to be a cartoonist and have my own show and i can’t wait to inspire others and can’t wait to make people feel happy and make others laugh i don’t care if i’m a woman i’m stubborn as all hell and i am going to be a cartoonist if it’s the last thing i do. i got this and i can’t wait to see where life takes me

This has accidentally become one of the most complex “this ear worm is driving me crazy and I need to creatively satiate it NOW”-isms I’ve ever done… but we made it! This time it’s the song from Polar Pals (which I highly recommend a listen if you haven’t, but do be warned that some of the language hasn’t aged well in the past 84 years)

simple GarageBand cover from last year that i never posted since i thought it was too "insubstantial" to post, but that's dumb!! surprisingly not LT related this time around, but Popeye instead. this song is one of my most frequent earworms. (and also do yourself a favor and watch the Popeye cartoon A Clean Shaven Man)

Do you own any Looney Tunes production art?
i’m incredibly fortunate enough to say that I DO!! i own this wonderful photostat model sheet from Porky the Wrestler!
Tumblr media
a photostat is essentially the ‘30s equivalent of a photocopy, so it’s not THE actual model sheet drawing, but it was still in the hands of at least one of the animators who worked on the short! if you hold it at a certain angle and get the light to reflect off of it, there are actually some indentations of writing, as if someone was writing on a piece of paper on top of it… and of course the hooves and side snout drawn in marker which aren’t meant to be there (maybe it was a slow work day?)
i actually still haven’t gotten it framed, i need to… but i also just really enjoy being able to hold it in my hands and try and make out the writing indentations on top and also lose my mind at Oh My God Someone In The Tex Avery Unit Touched This At One Point. plus, the material is glossy/has a cardboard sort of feel to it (like a more sturdy printed photograph) so it’s not as delicate as animation paper and gets along fine sitting on my shelf as is HAHA. still, definitely want to find a proper means of displaying it sometime!

the voice direction for Marjorie Tarlton’s Sniffles is so especially great in Lost and Foundling, really love how affectionately stilted her deliveries are. i think of woosterwoostersyestershire constantly. (also helps that it’s an especially great cartoon in general)

i am literally so mad that i have waited years to write this review of Daffy’s Southern Exposure and when i finally do i get the worst cold i have had at least within the past 5 years and am too sick to write a substantial amount. like come on. COME ON! i would almost rather it be COVID because that’s at least a valid excuse!!!!! sorry this post nasal drip made me nauseous and then i got mad that i was nauseous because i also had a bad stomach bug two weeks ago that also prevented me from writing. needless to say i hope you all enjoy the review when it’s out because my goodness it is giving me a hard time. thank you for your patience again 😤🙏

she asked what use i would have for wristwatches and i said convenience. that’s all. she’s lucky she’s my favorite AC character because she is far sweeping the bullying competition.

Recovering from a stubborn cold so unfortunately I don’t have anything more elaborate, but I was getting increasingly bothered at the prospect of not commemorating this very important day. Still doesn’t look a day over 83!
