to me. the fact that donald and scrooge’s relationship is damaged almost beyond repair after the spear is lost. is like 60% of the tragedy of the whole thing. like when you lose somebody the first thing you do is find people who make you feel less alone. and instead they lose each other too. so now scrooge is alone (he has beakley with whatever measure of support she can give but he won’t accept it and she’s not fool enough to keep throwing him things that he’ll shut down immediately). and donald has the boys and whatever friends on the past you wish to give him.

but. do you know how hard it is to be an isolated mother. do you know how hard it is to be an isolated single mother. do you know how hard it is to be an isolated single father. do you know how hard it is to be an isolated single father when they’re not even supposed to be your kids and you have to explain this to them. and there are three of them. and they remind you of your best friend but you’re never going to see her again.

losing somebody is hard but if she’s lost and unreachable in space she’s dead. losing somebody and they live four miles away from you is worse because you want to go home and every day is a battle with yourself trying not to give in.

you can move on from one thing but when you know someone is still out there and you know youre supposed to be with them…. that’s an entire tragedy on its own

"is it true?" he asks. before he opened his mouth the only thing you could hear was your synchronized breaths and the rhythmic tick of the wall clock.

"is what true?" you look up at him, meeting his eyes. the look you share is nonetheless intense, a language only you two could understand.

the sun hits your skin just right.

he thinks.

"you're staying in tokyo?"

you let out a puff. of course he already knows, "yes. does it bother you?"

you're both sitting on the same twin bed. even though the years have passed, not much has changed. the house you're staying at is pretty much empty, no decoration, but still a perfect reflection of yourself— shoes scattered next to the door, a scarf hanging from the chair in front of your desk, an open notebook with notes full of doodles thrown everywhere. he still leans against the wall of the room while he's sat on the bed, with you in front of him.

too close.

"it does, actually."

you roll your eyes.

"did you really have to come back?" it doesn't come out as harsh as it may sound. you understand what he means, he's being sarcastic. you hit his arm weakly, giggling.

you rest your head on his arm for a couple of seconds before looking up at him.

"i missed my friends, suna."

you both share another glance, in silence. for a moment you think he's going to ask you if you missed him too. there's no need for such a thing. too cliché, and the answer is obvious anyway.

years have passed. pretty much nothing has changed.

he can feel your faint breathing hitting his arm. he takes his time analyzing your eyes. and then your entire face; how the golden light hits not just the room just perfectly, but you, too. again.

"you're still too pretty."

there 'sa beat.

your eyes meet his lips.

and when you look at his eyes again, he's thinking of the same thing.

it'd be easy.

another beat.

"—aand, you still have a girlfriend." you pull away.

years have passed. one thing has changed.

"i'm not a homewrecker, rin."

he stares at you, raising one brow slightly.

"theoretically. and, you're not a cheater." you tell him.

"or are you?"

"of course not!"

"then there's that."

silence reigns again. so much that it would be uncomfortable if it were with anyone else, but you both enjoyed it.

"she's not you, though."

"that 's mean."

you've met the girl. a sweetheart, who truly did not deserve to get involved into this mess. although it's more sophisticated than it once was, everyone around you could see that you and suna were still trapped inside of your own little world you both had created; and the girl certainly wasn't blind. you were honestly surprised when you were met with nothing but kindness when you first greeted each other. you wish she wasn't so nice, it would have made you feel better.

there is still much in common that remains between him and you. a trusted familiarity that makes it easy to forget all the years of long distance and different people. if you let yourself flow within, it becomes easy to be convinced that there is no other person quite like suna to you.

he sighs. you stare at each other.

"you were not supposed to come back." he says, leaning closer so he could rest his head on your shoulder.

"i know." you whisper.

"it'd be easier."

"i know." you sigh, bobbing your head to the side, breathing in his recently cleaned hair, still smelling of his cedar shampoo, "i'm sorry."

he level a stare at you, eyes full of something. it'd be easy.

you breathe.

"i think you should leave, rin.”

uh. circus au 2024 edition bc I reread stepping stones and I miss them

richie: I'm sticking with hand balancer richie bc I don't care if it's boring. I'm giving him good shoulders. he trained in gymnastics before circus so his handstands are super pretty. when he's on his feet he has almost no control over his body but put him on his hands and he can balance on anything. can walk on his hands for minutes on end.

I also think he'd be a pretty good puppeteer!! bev helps him make new puppets :)

eddie: anything aerial for eddie. trapeze, silks, hoops, tight rope walking. that boy needs to be up high and flying. really flexible. his favourite thing to do is probably silks (and it's richies favourite too, because eddies costumes are always super short bc he likes having bare skin to help grip the silk)

mikey: dog trainer... bc the thought of him and mr chips having a silly little circus routine keeps me up at night. mr chips can balance on one paw. he can jump through hoops. he can walk a tightrope with mikey. they're so cute. best jugglar out of everyone

bill: ringmaster sorry I don't take criticisms. he also does tightrope and he even has a little tightrope routine with georgie!!! he taught georgie how to tightrope when they were little babies 🥺

stan: magician. he even has a couple of doves as pets that join in the routine sometimes. they're very well behaved and love sitting on his shoulders when they're not performing

bev: trapeze with eddie...... I also think she def helps design and make everyone's costumes. she also puppets with Richie sometimes, and her voices are always terrible and over the top but it makes the kids laugh.

ben: he's the one in charge of building everyone's sets and props and making sure everything is secure !!! he loves designing new things for Eddie to do aerial work with and weird little walkways for Richie to hand walk across and builds puppet theatres for rich n bev!!! he makes mr chips a kennel!! he helps make platforms for stans disappearing acts.... he is seriously the backbone of all their performances !!!!
