@themiserablesmonth day 4: fabric
Gav Lives AU where Valjean carries him off to safety on his noodle-free shoulder, Marius finds Enjolras's discarded-in-the-heat-of-revolution coat, brings it home and gives it to Gav, who repairs a few rips and tears before taking up the mantle for the 1834 April revolt and/or the chaos of 1848.

Valjean and javert texting headcanons. If you get the references then you get them, if you dont, you dont. Take this as you will.
valjean:
i love valjean with all my heart but this man cannot text. He plays with all the functions like how a curious toddler would do building blocks.
So many emojis. He will write a sentence and substitute ANY word with its emoji equivalent. (Ex.) ”✅ 🤩morning 🌞cosette🥰!!!!! I 👀 made 🫵 ☕️🥚🍳🥞🥣🧇!!!!! come 🔽 and 😋 i 😻❤️ you
-love, papa”
Oh yeah he also signs off all his texts. Like a letter
-he sometimes accidentally sends voice messages???? Like im certain he’s accidentally sent atleast full 3 minutes of lawmowing noises.
-it’s obvious when hes learned a new slang word. Very obvious.
-both him and javert take the most horrendous and unflattering selfies. Intentional or not. Valjean once sent a photo with the caption “look at the size of that plane!!!!!!!!!” using the frontfacing camera.
Javert:
Worse than valjean. No idea how to text. Let alone work a phone. he sometimes mistakes it for google; leading to notifications like this:
javert now Missed Call (11) slide to call
javert 3m ago
is bukkake a restaurant
-He has a major problem with text to speech. He will spend a concerning amount of time repeating the same word that his poor phone cant seem to get right, all the while muttering how much he ‘hates this thing’. And afterwards he doesnt even bother to delete the damn chunk of text. Not like he knows how.
-sometimes sends extremely vague messsges, like an ominous “come” when hes beckoning someone over.
-he drops his phone. A lot. Many random keysmashes will ensue.
with all that aside, picture how itll read when they text eachother.

So movie adaptations of Les Mis really like to introduce Valjean and Javert in Toulon. Technically, this is fine. They probably did meet in Toulon. Except the movies (especially 1978) present this initial meeting as happening fairly early on in Valjean’s sentence. What’s so funny about this is the fact that these movies never account for their age gap (which is about 11 years). I don’t know exactly how old either of them were when Valjean first arrived at Toulon, but I’m pretty certain Javert wasn’t even 18 at the time.

Reminder that the 10 thermidor was only the beginning of a purge that saw hundreds of people murdered in the next two days and hundreds more arrested. Some committed suicide or were poisoned in jail.
The Commune was almost entirely purged:
there were 140 members on the general council on 9 thermidor
87 were guillotined
40 imprisoned
only 13 remained free
On 11 thermidor, twelve tumbrils carried 71 people to be executed. Here are their names. 12 more people were guillotined on 12 thermidor. Remember this when you read the traitorous CSP members tell you they did this to "prevent bloodshed" - when the execution toll on 11 thermidor was the biggest in one day ever.
Four months later in November the Club des Jacobins would be attacked by a right-wing militia led by Fréron, who broke the windows and doors down, beat the men, and stripped and whipped the women who were there. These women were ridiculed in crass pamphlets the following days. A deputy's wife was among them, whom Fréron had been personally targetting in his rag for weeks. The Convention punished no one but the Jacobins themselves by ordering the Club to be shut down and destroyed. A market was later built there and named to celebrate Thermidor.
The terrible winter came where tons of people starved because the new useless government of corrupt fiends lifted all regulations to "free" the market. This is the winter where Victor Hugo wrote Jean Valjean stealing bread to feed his sister's children. It's not a coincidence.
Less than a year later, in May 1795, the sans-culottes would rise for the last time in an insurrection that was utterly crushed and, with it, the popular spring of the Revolution.
The Revolution had been dying. It was now truly dead.
The next years were just a corpse they pretended was still alive.

What are your favourite pathetic Javert moments? I read your post, and now I'm curious
Tumblr media
(CONTEXT: a while back I made a post where I jokingly promised to list my top ten pathetic Javert moments. It is finally that time. Thank you anon and @revolutionaeternam.)
I had trouble writing this post because there are way too many moments in the Brick where Javert is a horribly pathetic creature.  So here are the Top Eleven Pathetic Javert Moments I Am Currently Thinking About:  #11:
“This man was at the barricade,” said he in a low voice and as though speaking to himself. “He is the one they called Marius.” A spy of the first quality, who had observed everything, listened to everything, and taken in everything, even when he thought that he was to die; who had played the spy even in his agony, and who, with his elbows leaning on the first step of the sepulchre, had taken notes.
This line really encapsulates the tragic pathetic side of Javert for me. His entire existence is built on mindless groveling and performing useless tasks in the service of an authority that does not respect him and never will. He is the kind of person who will waste his last hours alive pointlessly ‘taking notes’ no one will read simply because it is what he has been ordered to do, and he cannot disobey orders.
#10. The entire “Punish me, Monsieur Le Maire” scene. No explanation needed.
#9. Every moment when Javert expresses vehement hatred for some random inoffensive thing that no reasonable person would ever hate. (Ex. Thinking, kindness, facts, books, stoves, etc.)
#8: Javert recognizing Eponine's body right before his execution,  and saying “It strikes me that I know that girl.” The Javert/Eponine parallels, and that way Javert-Eponine are the failed  “shadows” of Valjean-Cosette....
#7. Every time Javert is compared to a dog. It’s always easier to feel sorry for a furry.
#6. The moment when the National Guard has an opportunity to trade Jehan’s life for Javert’s --and doesn't. (And Enjolras telling Javert that "your friends have just shot you.") Like?  The way Javert is serving a society that does not value his life; the way the National Guard could have easily rescued him, but didn’t know or care that he had been captured! And the fact that "your friends have just shot you" is immediately followed by Eponine, Javert’s narrative foil, dying of a bullet wound as she begs for attention from a man who doesn't even recognize her...the way both Javert and Eponine made themselves the “guard dogs” of someone/something that barely remembers they exist...
#5. All of Javert’s behavior at the barricade in general, and the way it parallels Jean Valjean's behavior. It’s fascinating how Javert acts so similar to the way Jean Valjean acted while captured by Thenardier — they both ‘do not utter a single cry,’ and remain utterly calm even when tied to a post awaiting death. They are superficially polite, save for a few passive-aggressive insults. It’s one of the few moments where you see “oh yeah, Javert was born in a prison, and like Jean Valjean he’s learned how to 'properly' behave in situations where he's trapped and has no autonomy, to the point where it’s second nature for him.” Fanfic writers often portray the barricade as uniquely traumatizing for Javert, but the sad thing is that Javert is pretty “eh this is just Tuesday for me” about it until Jean Valjean saves his life.
#4. Javert’s inability to lie at the barricades. He cannot lie to save his life. At the barricade they ask him who he is and he responds “my name’s Javert and I’m a cop.” Who made this man a spy???? Why did they did they send HIM on the spying mission???
#3. Javert IS SO BAD at lying I'm putting it on this list twice. 2012 Les Mis Fandom often liked to make Javert a ~closed book who secretly has a soft heart and hidden depths~ but to me…, one of the most pathetic things about Javert is that what you see is what you get. He is physically incapable of pretending to believe things he does not believe or feel things he does not feel. He’s described as someone whose eyes are so clear you can see the very depths of his conscience in them. Javert can be stoic and level-headed while dealing with severe emotions, but he cannot lie, and the one time he attempts to lie (“I will wait for you here”) he’s so bad at it that even a very distracted Jean Valjean notices something is off. And idk, to me it seems like there can be a really painful vulnerability to that.
#2. “You annoy me. Kill me rather.” ICONIC. And the tu/vous switch that happens here, where Javert is trying to act harsh toward Valjean but is incapable of concealing the fact that he’s developed a new terrifying respect for him!! Because he is a terrible liar! Something is wrong with him. <3 The entire 'execution' scene is a beautiful farce.
#1. This is cheating but: everything involving Javert's final confrontation with Jean Valjean after the barricades, including all of Derailed. These brief chapters are the only time when we see how a doubt-ridden post-barricades Javert interacts with other people, especially Jean Valjean, and it’s all deeply pitiable. His characterization in these chapters is fascinating, and is almost never captured in any adaptations. He isn’t shouting at Valjean or violently threatening him with death; for the first time he’s lost, wandering, and uncertain, speaking "as if in a dream" and passively allowing Jean Valjean to decide where they go and what they do. It's Javert at his most wet and pathetic. Javert sees Jean Valjean and is torn between feeling like quote "the wolf which regains its grip on its prey and the dog that finds its master again...." and he deals with that by Bluescreening. I have this theory that Javert is at his most 'likable' when he has the least power. When Javert has power, he is terrifying. But when he's powerless, when he’s been “declawed," when he's incapable of doing harm, he's just this strange pitiable Creature.  And these last chapters are peak Declawed Javert.

Geoffrey Rush being 182 cm (between 5' 11" and 6' 0") is so surreal to me because he looks so so tiny compared to Liam Neeson who's 193 cm tall (6' 4")
When I didn't know how tall they were I was like "haha small Javert" and when I looked up their heights I was like "DAMN MORE LIKE TALL ASS VALJEAN"

Patron-Minette’s Paris
I thought I would compile a handy reference sheet of all the locations we see the Patron-Minette and their affiliates (both formal and informal) at different points of the novel. The 1832 map that I used can be found at this website— the site was really accessible and has a handy tool that lets you compare this old map directly to a modern-day map of Paris by overlaying.
Anyway, without further ado, here is the map featuring all geographic information relating to the Patron-Minette. Please expand this post to see the corresponding list of location names and find out what happens at each location. At the end of this post, you can also find a “short note” where I dissect and speculate some of the movements during the sections of the novel that centre around La Force specifically.
Tumblr media
Click for higher quality and ability to zoom in on each numbered point. Sorry that I can’t make the image any clearer!
MEETING POINT
1. The ‘wasteland’ that adjoins La Salpêtrière; The location where the Patron-Minette assemble at nightfall and plan their heists.
GORBEAU AMBUSH
2. Gorbeau Hovel [estimated location]; Within this building exists the Thénardier (Jondrette) family lodgings— the location where the Gorbeau ambush takes place.
3. Rue de la Barrière des Gobelins; Here Marius spots Thénardier talking to Panchaud ahead of the Gorbeau ambush on the evening on February 3rd 1832.
4. Rue de Petit-Banquier; Behind a very low wall in the middle of this street Marius spots Brujon and Demi-Liard discussing the Gorbeau ambush, just five hours before it goes ahead.
PRISONS
5. La Force; The jail where Babet, Gueulemer, Brujon, Panchaud, Demi-Liard, Boulatruelle, and Thénardier are imprisoned after the failed Gorbeau ambush.
6. La Salpêtrière; A prison and ‘hospital’ where Babet’s mistress is locked up during the Spring of 1832. The location housed both “insane”, “hysterical” women and prostitutes behind its walls.
7. Les Madelonnettes; Formerly a convent, this facility was turned into a prison during the French Revolution. In 1832, Azelma and Éponine Thénardier are locked up here after the failed Gorbeau ambush.
8. La Conciergerie; A courthouse with an adjoining jail. In early April 1832, Babet was transported to this facility from La Force, but he managed to escape from the police en route.
RUE PLUMET
9. Rue Plumet [estimated location]; Located in the old Faubourg Saint-Germain district, this is the site where Valjean and Cosette live. It is here that Éponine faces off against the Patron-Minette on 3rd June 1832.
INFORMAL AFFILIATES: GAVROCHE, THE MÔMES, AND MAGNON
10. The Bastille Elephant; Gavroche’s ‘house’.
11. Quai des Célestins; The street where Magnon used to live.
12. Rue Clocheperce; After obtaining the two youngest Thénardier boys, Magnon moved to this street as a means of changing her identity. The comedic closeness of Magnon’s two lodgings is certainly not lost on Hugo and he explains as such: ‘In Paris, the identity which binds an individual to himself is broken between one street and another’ (Hapgood translation)
13. Rue des Ballets; On this street corner Gavroche and the mômes encounter Montparnasse the evening before the Patron-Minette’s escape from La Force.
CHARACTER SPECIFIC HAUNTS
14. Arche-Marion sewer [estimated location]; Gueulemer‘s hideout.
15. Square du Temple; According to Thénardier, Babet, amongst his other trades, had been an old-clothes broker at the Temple.
16. Barricade between Rue de la Chanvrerie and Rue Mondétour; The location where Le Cabuc/Claquesous shoots a porter and is executed by Enjolras. After being killed, his body is flung over the small barricade on Rue Mondétour.
17. Austerlitz village; It is in this general location where Gavroche witnesses Montparnasse’s attempt to attack Valjean in early April.
18. Gaîté theatre; Brujon and Demi-Liard watch a melodrama at this location on 2nd February 1832, the evening before the Gorbeau ambush.
19. Panthèon; Kruideniers is said to patrol and live in this general area.
20. Val-de-Grâce; Glorieux is said to patrol and live in this general area.
21. Barrière de Grenelle; Barrecarrosse is said to patrol and live in this general area.
A short note: Mapping La Force
Tumblr media
THE ILLOGICAL TRANSFER OF BRUJON’S CORRESPONDENCE ABOUT “RUE P” (blue)
1. La Force prison (Brujon gives note to Babet).
2. La Salpêtriere (Note is delivered to Babet’s mistress).
3. Rue Clocheperce (Note is delivered to Magnon).
4. Les Madelonnettes (Note is given to Éponine by Magnon once she is released).
Frankly, the way that Brujon’s secret correspondence about the Rue Plumet job is handed around before being delivered to Éponine is hilarious. Why did Babet bother to send the note all the way to his mistress in La Selpêtriere when Magnon near enough lives on the doorstep of La Force? Surely there could have been a much easier and more logical way for the note to be delivered to Magnon directly, rather than it crossing over the Seine and going to another prison before being smuggled back out to Magnon again.
And, let’s not forget that the same thing happens in reverse after Éponine has scouted out the house on rue Plumet and delivered a biscuit to Magnon. The whole process seems extremely long-winded and perhaps even riskier than Babet and Brujon trying to get the message delivered to Magnon directly!
MONTPARNASSE’S INSANE RUNNING SPEED (red)
Red arrow to red flag: the route taken by Montparnasse to fetch Gavroche and bring him to La Force in order to help Thénardier down from the roof.
Well, by tracking the length of time it takes to complete this route, I have come to the conclusion that Montparnasse has very long legs and is an insanely fast runner.
According to Google Maps taking the quickest route from La Force to the location of the Bastille elephant one way would take over ten minutes to walk. Which sure, maybe that could be run in five minutes if you set a good pace. But, Hugo states that in ‘seven to eight minutes’ Montparnasse had run the complete route twice over (as he had to bring Gavroche back with him to La Force) wearing what I can only image would be rather heavy and uncomfortable garments, considering that his clothes would be soaked with rain at this point of the scene. And, we must account for the time that Montparnasse had to stand outside the Bastille Elephant and call for Gavroche + wait for him to come down and follow him.
It seems like a fairly impressive feat to me that he was able to do all that in seven to eight minutes— I guess he wasn’t referred to as Thénardier’s almost son-in-law in vain then, he certainly seems keen to get the innkeeper down from the roof!
HOW DID BABET ESCAPE? (green)
Green star: La Conciergerie, where Babet was being transferred from La Force when he made his escape. The green line is a rough indication of the route he might have been transported along.
Looking at all of the possible routes that Babet could have been transported along whilst being taken from La Force to La Conciergerie has me intrigued. Of course, I can only speculate about which point he might have escaped (if he even escaped en route? Montparnasse is rather vague when telling Gavroche how Babet escaped... but he does mention a police station— so perhaps Babet had fled before his transportation to La Conciergerie had even begun).
I think it is interesting to note that Magnon’s house is located fairly near La Force and La Conciergerie. And, we know that Magnon is at least acquaintances with Babet’s mistress thanks to the route of delivery of Brujon’s “Rue P” note... so perhaps she granted him a place to hide from the police.
Gueulemer’s hideout in the Arche-Marion sewer is also located very close to La Conciergerie. Again, this would have provided a nice hiding spot for Babet after he made his escape— and we know that Victor Hugo loves a good sewer story.

Writer 20 Questions
Thank you for the tag @ninjasawakenedmystar !!
1. How many works do you have on AO3?
83
2. What’s your total AO3 word count?
278,714. TCWGANV definitely takes the bulk of that.
3. What fandoms do you write for?
Mainly Star Wars but I have written a few Undertale fics as well.
4. What are your top five fics by kudos?
1) The Clone Wars Gets A New Victim
2) our last goodbye
3) i changed to save you (but i was too late)
4) quiet fire
5) The Red Scarf
5. Do you respond to comments? Why or why not?
I try my best too but sometimes I get just overwhelmed with happiness and can't figure out a way to word a response.
6. What’s the fic you wrote with the angstiest ending?
Without going through all my fics I just want to say TCWGANV because it hasn't failed to make me cry and I wrote the ending to it almost two years ago now. However the ending is probably a lot more bittersweet than angsty. So it would probably be one will die (before he gets there)
7. What’s the fic you wrote with the happiest ending?
Tumblr media
A Happy Ending For Everyone (Except Palpatine)
Which is an old fic but I barely write happy stories 😅
8. Do you get hate on your fic?
Yes. I've gotten hate for TCWGANV and our last goodbye. Most of the hate goes for TCWGANV though, which is especially aimed at Grim. Who has of course, gotten hate outside of my fics with her.
9. Do you write smut?
No.
10. Do you write crossovers?
I have a couple Star Wars x Undertale crossover fics. I actually recently decided to redo the entire AU awhile ago but never finished the concept art for it. Here's my togruta Toriel design for this AU actually:
Tumblr media
11. Have you ever had a fic stolen?
Not that I'm aware of fortunately.
12. Have you ever had a fic translated?
No I haven't. It would be cool if someone did translate one of my fics though.
13. Have you ever co-written a fic?
I have not, and although it could be interesting, I think I'd end up getting stuck with how I saw the story going.
14. What‘s your all-time favourite ship?
I'm not going to lie probably grimsoka.
15. What’s the WIP you want to finish but doubt you ever will?
That's actually probably a good portion of my WIPs. Soldier In Peacetimes was an interesting Time Travel AU though that could have a nice ending if I ever got back to it.
16. What’s your writing strengths?
Definitely dialogue! Although I would also say probably just scenes that really dive into a character's emotional pain as well. I love hurting my blorbos <3
17. What’s your writing weaknesses?
Describing what a character looks like. I know I don't have to do that for the majority of canon characters but I rarely, if ever, describe what Grim looks like 😭
18. Thoughts on writing dialogue in another language for a fic?
I think it depends on the fic tbh. I haven't really done this before. Except now I'm struggling in ALATL because of the beginning of Return Of The Jedi and all the huttese.
19. First fandom you wrote for?
Undertale! (Although this was before I had A03)
20. Favourite fic you’ve ever written?
The Clone Wars Gets A New Victim. I think it's always going to have a special place in my heart. It's my longest fic and was the first time I really finished a multichapter story. I don't think even As Long As There's Light is going to replace TCWGANV in my heart.
I'm tagging: @jedi-valjean @jgvfhl @shrinkthisviolet @veradragonjedi @darth-caillic and anyone else who wants to do this!

We've reached Chapter 1.5.5, "Vague Flashes on the Horizon," of Les Mis, and you know what that means?
It's Hot Manga Javert time!
Tumblr media
Pages 363–373 of the first English omnibus of Arai's manga introduce Javert and his suspicions of Madeleine (aided, in this case, by a seed planted by Fauchelevant), but it isn't until much, much later, in Volume 7 of the Japanese manga (presumably part of the 4th English omnibus eventually), on pages 6–11, that we see where he came from: "As he grew up, he thought that he was outside the pale of society, and he despaired of ever re-entering it. He observed that society unpardoningly excludes two classes of men,—those who attack it and those who guard it." This page below is where he made the choice whether to attack or to guard the society he was excluded from. (also featured: Javert's dogsona, as associated with him in the manga much in the same way that Valjean is shadowed by a lion)

Okay basic questions time before I get a bunch of anon asks
“Two of these are women.”
Father figures also count
“Some of these doesn’t have their own kids”
See point 1
“Why is there only a few characters from the same franchise going against each other but sometimes they aren’t”
Because I only recognized fire emblem, Pokémon, and JJBA at first.
“Aus doesn’t count”
As a previous undertale fan. I could care less. And I am not replacing Tim with BAMSE.
“Replace x with Bamse”
Sorry but. Findus and Skalman have already won. 3 times are a bit too much for us sweds.
“911 is copaganda”
You see Brooklyn 911 (picked by wheel) and you go against fireback mountain. Shame on you anon.
“Dad council these aren’t all random”
Yeah but Neon J vs Wubbox = chaos
Code of conduct

102 GENDER UNRESTRICTED DILF ELIMINATION!!!
narrowing the dilfs down to a somewhat workable bracket was, by far, the one of the most nerve-rackings things we've ever done. it has kept us up for nights. bickering in the mods video call over this has ripped this family to shreds. the bracket was longer, shorter, and longer again as we pulled dilfs from the abyss to set them down into the arena. absolutely gutted that we couldn't include everybody, but if your dilf isn't on the main bracket, do not fear. we will not leave a dilf out in the cold to die without honor. they will have their moment.
the dilfs were ranked and seeded based on a very intricate rubric and vibes that included number of nominations so if you see a heavy hitter in a lower bracket than you'd expect, you've nobody but your fellow man to blame.
the first round of dilf death match arena contenders are below the cut. we'll work our way down the bracket with new polls roughly every day. first round seeds like hannibal and bob belcher get a bye week, due to their incredible energy catapulting them into top seed contention, and will not appear until round 2.
happy hunting!
p.s. some of your entries, including those that did not make the cut, shook us to our core and will forever be ingrained into our dna. congrats
