I’ve come up with the answer to what’s wrong with my generations romantic expectations and I can sum it all up with Star Wars.

The Original Trilogy’s Jedi Boyfriend: Luke Skywalker the man who saw the good in a mostly evil person and fought tooth and nail to redeem that goodness. The man who chose to put down his weapon in the presence of his greatest enemies because peace was the only option he could accept. The man who loved and trusted his friends and learned selfless un-possessive love.

The Prequel’s Jedi Boyfriend: Anakin Skywalker the man who had everything and lost it. The man who was meant to be the hero who saved the galaxy but gave in to jealousy, rage, and greed. The man who could not walk away from an insult or a fight. The man who could not set aside ambition for the people he loved. The man who could not love selflessly. The man who sided with a liar and murderer and turned against everything he believed in because he thought he was strong enough to overcome the power of darkness even while giving himself over to it.

**I know that this is simplifying things a little, but I’m still so salty that they made us fall in love with Anakin and then forced us to watch him fall so far.

I’m playing Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order and I accidentally hit the key to talk to BD-1 instead of the key to grab and climb the wall and thus had the joy of listening to Cal Kestis say “Things are going pretty well, aren’t they BD” as he plummeted off a cliff to his death.

We were always worlds apart

And so I simply follow

To the edges of it all

To produce its greatest light

It needs a gentle nudge

To urge it when it’s small

To fan it when it falters

To carry it through the fall

To shelter it from sorrow

To lift it proud and tall

Where it can shine for all

So I stand at the edge of the world

My hands all bathed in flame

A star’s light is far too precious

To ever snuff out or to tame

You’re growing brighter now

Soon all the world will see

The vital brilliance of you

That was always clear to me

But it’s growing harder now

To manage all this weight

Too lift you ever higher

When I know this is our fate

Still I shoulder all the burden

Still I lift for all I’m worth

I’m the lucky one, remember

To catch a star that fell to earth

And as the weight grows far too heavy

I spare a thought before I die

I wonder to myself

I have yet to properly thank the people who cast Penn Badgley as Joe in You.

I mean you look at Penn’s earlier body of work: Gossip Girl, Easy A, John Tucker Must Die, Do Over, etc. He was a whole generation’s teen heartthrob boyfriend. You took a whole generation’s boyfriend and you said “Okay, he’s still your generation’s boyfriend, but now he’s a dangerous delusional obsessive psychotic with a hero complex who murders people because he doesn’t know how to love.”

Like WOW. Cultural reset.

I’m an episode and a half into Lockwood & Co. and I do not think it overdramatic or exaggerative to say that I have fallen in love with Anthony Lockwood more quickly and more fiercely than I have ever fallen for a fictional character.

“Her name’s Lucy, my name’s Lockwood, and you need a ladder” just sealed it for me. This one’s a keeper.

My prof left a comment on a paper I submitted saying “you don’t need to put a comma before the word ‘and’ when listing things.”

Well, Linda, I decide on comma placement with my heart, and I’ll not be ceasing my usage of the Oxford comma. Thanks (but no thanks) for your feedback.

P.S. APA 7th edition says I should use a comma before ‘and’ at the end of a list, so how do you like them apples?
