Just had the thought that if Zhou Zishu drank Meng Po soup, he would probably forget 1) his own guilt towards his sect-brothers deaths and, by extension, 2) his death wish.

So, a Zishu who has run off to join the Ghost Valley instead of taking the nails could just be like: 'wow, im really happy now.' Possibly doesn't remember his own name, but waaaay less depressed.

(cue him picking Zhou Xu as his new Ghost name)

So here's the thing: I don't usually engage with or care about top/bottom discourse EXCEPT when I think it's funny, sooo...

Let's do some Science and examine Pingxie in a Very Serious Manner.

To do this, first let's take a look at some data gathered from all the danmei novels and shows I know (relevant for calibration you know, since they have actual canon top/bottom dynamics.)

SVSSS

Shen Qingqiu - Since his cause of death wasn't starvation we can assume - well, at least hope - that he can make instant noodles, if nothing else, but he will absolutely avoid having to cook if he can help it.

Luo Binghe - As the Protagonist he of course has to be The Bestest at everything (...except sex, apparently) and it's mentioned that both Bingge and Bingmei use their culinary skills to woo the people they want to sleep with. He's also the top, even though everyone involved would be better off if he wasn't.

MDZS

Lan Wangji - Becomes a pretty decent cook, as per the extras. Prefers to top.

Wei Wuxian - It's not like he's incompetent, he doesn't burn or undercook the food, it's just that his taste is so extreme that his dishes are basically inedible to anyone else.

TGCF

Hua Cheng - No special talent for cooking, but at least he's not actively dangerous. There's no on-page sex scene in the novel, but it's made obvious that he tops.

Xie Lian - Biohazard. Weapons-grade culinary anti-talent. Gastronomy's answer to Vogon poetry.

Golden Stage

Ulike in most of the other novels on the list, food doesn't really have much symbolic meaning and not much is said about either Fu Shen's or Yan Xiaohan's cooking skills, exept for a brief mention of Fu Shen pickling eggs to pass the time. This is a rare couple that canonically switches.

Guardian

Zhao Yunlan - This man considers instant noodles cooked with coffee an okay way to surprise a boyfriend. He really wouldn't mind topping, which he keeps lamenting throughout the book, but he's paired with Shen Wei who might just have the strongest set preference out of everyone on this list.

Shen Wei - Likes to dote on Zhao Yunlan by cooking for him and is genuinely very good at it.

Word of Honor (mind, I have only watched the show here)

Zhou Zishou - Can keep himself alive, but left to his own devices would probably make due with charred-and-yet-undercooked fish or something.

Wen Kexing - A competent cook. While obviously not detailed in the drama I looked it up (or asked someone, I can't remember) and he's the top here.

Erha

Chu Wanning - Perfected exactly one (1) dish, is rather... unfortunate otherwise. You could not pay this man to top.

Mo Ran - Excellent cook. Actually worked in a kitchen at one point in his life, giving and receiving food is basically his main love-language.

Now that we have examined these canon couples and have drawn all the relevant conclusions, let's apply what we learned to our non-danmei, might-as-well-be-canon-but-isn't ship.

Wu Xie - Can cook just fine both in the novel and the drama-verse even if it doesn't come up too often. In the first season he cooks up a pretty decent feast for his friends and in the Yucun books he helps come up with the dishes they would serve in their restaurant.

Zhang Qiling - The entire Thing of this poor sod as a character is that he knows how to survive but not how to live. Taking the time to prepare nice meals or cook anything beyond basic sustenance just... doesn't fit that picture.

So.

I rest my case.

Sometimes I think Zhao Yunlan and Luo Wenzhou would be good crime solving buddies. I platonically ship them. Heck, they can hang with former crime stopper (ish...) Zhou Zishou and all lament how adorable their husbands are and how much their husband's criminal families suck.

ETA: Basically, I see cute art of all the MXTX canon couples hanging out and I want that for my Priest boys. Sometimes you see WenZhou hanging with XiYuan but I want MORE.

Today in "Ideas I don't think I'll ever write but I just HAVE to share!"...

Was thinking of my The Nie are the Tolkien Dwarves of the Jianghu theory and this awesome/horrible idea popped into my head for a fusion of LOTR, MDZS, and Word of Honor.

So on a night hunt with the Juniors (them being our hobbits - imagine Jin Ling and Lan Jingyi as Merry and Pippin!!!), Lan Sizhui (our Frodo, with romantic Ouyang Zizhen as our Sam) gets glomped onto by some sort of cursed object and they all go back to Cloud Recesses, coincidentally when there's a cultivation conference there as well as a visit by three travellers. So we have the Juniors going in front of everyone to ask for help, and the conclusion is that the cursed item is so powerful that the curse can only end once the item is destroyed, and it's so protected that only the fires of a particular volcano in Qishan would destroy it.

The visitors volunteer to help - Ye Baiyi doesn't act like he wants to but he secretly does (he's our sarcastic/grumpy Gandalf) and Wen Kexing and Zhou Zishou think the Juniors are adorable and remind them of Chengling so they're all for helping (they're our Men, Aragorn and Boromir - in my theory the sects were all dwarves or elves so needed some outsiders for Men, and Ye Baiyi would be hilarious as our wizard).

Jiang Cheng (the Jiang, our Mirkwood elves), of course, stands right up and refuses to let his nephew go without his Jiujiu. "He has my Sandu and Zidian," he growls as if challenging anyone to argue.

Meanwhile, the advisors of the Nie (Dwarves) delegation are concerned their sect leader has been sleeping through the whole meeting and one of them pokes Nie Huaisang, who wakes up startled and finds his hand empty. "My fan!" Then more quietly. "Where's my fan."

Jiang Cheng, looking more than skeptical: "We have... your fan?"

Nie Huaisang, bullshitting as he's wont to do when trying to hide that he's been sleeping through a meeting: "Of course you do, I wouldn't have said it otherwise."

Lan Qiren waves them all forward: "It seems we have a fellowship assembled to achieve this mission. I wish you all luck."

The Juniors, Ye Baiyi, Wen Kexing, Zhou Zixhou, Jiang Cheng, and Nie Huaisang all stand together. Nie Huaisang, leaning toward Jiang Cheng and speaks in an aside:

"So... where are we going?"

Bonus - For my Legolas/Gimli & SangCheng loving ass

Jiang Cheng: Well, I never thought I'd go back to Qishan side-by-side with a Nie.

Nie Huaisang: What about side-by-side with a friend?

Jiang Cheng rolls his eyes but can't help a small, fond smile.

Synopsis

Thoughts

Mom and I finished WOH a couple of days ago! To start, I think I can safely say I was beyond confused until maybe the last 10ish episodes. I do believe WOH is based off of a novel, so I’ll have to do some more research on that. I think this show was actually amazing for the amount of “touchy feely” they were able to get away with! The character dynamics were amazing and I think this cast and team did a wonderful job. I will say the ending threw me off… Like off a cliff off… If you know what happens, then you get it (iykyk). Mom and I found the hidden episode on tiktok and it gave us some closure, but for real?! I also found the Cadillac ad that gave us “closure” for a-Xiang and Weining (I cried like a baby over it). Overall, mom and I really enjoyed the show!

ok but can we talk about how word of honor emphasizes human connections and relationships. If there's one thing to take away from this drama it is that your relationships with others makes ur life.

Before Long Que's death, he says, "what's the meaning for me to live longer? My friends have died, so have my love, and my disciples. I owe the world nothing! Death is no big deal, but a kind of release"

It's your family, your friends, your lover, your neighbors, your loved ones and your relationships your Connections are what makes your life better and worth living.

And when Beauty Ghost Qian Qiao says

"Nothing is more precious than the people around you, especially the one you love. One day of staying together means a lot. One more day of that is your fortune."

and when wen kexing talks to tragicomic ghost "no matter how fierce a ghost is, as long as it finds the path to man's world, it will choose to become human again. "

like human connections and love is what makes us well, humans. And no matter how far down a person has gone he will find his way back again if he is loved and cared for.

And obviously wen kexing and zhou zishou's whole relationship and dynamic is based on them bringing each other back from darkness with their love. If it weren't for the other, both of them wouldn't be alive and truly living. Their connection is what gave their lives meaning.
