I have been super tempted to buy one of these Nerdy Gurdy kits! Did you finish building yours? Is it difficult—I have absolutely ZERO woodworking experience. How does it sound? Was it worth it? So many questions!!!!!
@zethry - I did finish, back on (appropriately) April Fool's Day. You don't need any woodworking experience. All the pieces of the kit just pop out of sheets of laser-cut plywood. You may need to use a small file to widen some of the slots that tabs go into. There's also a lot of gluing but if you've ever built a model airplane or stuck the handle back on a mug you're all set. You will need a good wood glue & as many clamps as you can get your hands on. Everyone recommends TiteBond III since you can essentially melt it back off with a paint-stripping heat gun if you need to make adjustments after the fact.
Oh, you'll need a hacksaw too, but only briefly to cut threaded rod to the right length. Plus you have to supply your own screws, nuts, bolts & whatnot.
It took a long, long time to get it to stop sounding like a crime against humanity. There are a lot of things that influence the sound, including how "true" the wheel is, whether you've got the right amount of cotton on the strings, whether you've got the right string for the right note, whether you've got the right amount of rosin on the wheel, the height of the bridges & on & on. But that's true for pros using real luthier-made instruments, so it's no knock on the Nerdy Gurdy.
Oddly enough getting the dog to buzz was the biggest challenge, but lemme tell you there was a real sense of accomplishment when I finally did!
It was absolutely worth it. I ordered my kit from littlebitsofinteresting.com. She's a licensed US distributor & often has kits available when the Dutch maker is out of stock. For roughly half the price of even the most basic Vrabel plus some hours of sweat equity you get a functional instrument that sounds good enough to learn on. Frankly, like with any kit project, the building is at least half the fun. There's a builders' group on Facebook that's always a big help if you run into trouble. Or watch the build playlist on The Gentle Flamingo YouTube channel.
One of these days I'll get around to making a clip of playing it, just to satisfy anyone's morbid curiosity.
If there are any other questions I can answer for you, shoot.

I’m back ! :D
Hey everyone ! I’m back and I finally marathoned s7 ! What a ride !!!!
Tumblr media
I loved it. We’re at that part of the story where we finally get answers to our questions, some that we’ve been having since sooo long. And it feels so good (even when the answers hurt ; still closure !).
I loved the development for the story, and for the characters, they all grew so much ?! Including side characters getting really cool arks ? There is such a HUGE cast now, and everyone is so interesting and gets their moments ?!
I was really on the edge of my sit the entire season. The stakes were really high, and it was also such an emotional roller-coaster omg.
For now, let me just go back to all my questions and hopes  for this season !
Because so much were met, I’m so happy !!!
And... let’s put that under a read more, because it is LONG.
Here are just quotes from that post I made about what I was excited for in s7 (it was before SDCC and any trailer / articles etc, based on s6 only (and that one quote from Kimberley Brooks) :
So much has changed, with new members on the team (Krolia, Romelle), Keith back, Shiro back in his own way : everyone will have to reconnect a little / find their place.
They totally did, it was particularly explored in “The journey within” where they finally talked about and worked through a lot of stuff, but we saw it in the entire season ! I really like that they got to discuss some stuff like the impact of Keith leaving, and Keith questioning their friendship. Also, reconnecting / bonding with Galaxy Garrison characters as well ! And even bonding more with their lions !!!
Tumblr media
Specially, what’s going to happen with Shiro ? We’ve had this thing with the White Lion, and Josh Keaton’s latest answer at Florida Supercon makes about Kuron and Shiro makes me really curious. And will Shiro get a new altean or olkari arm ?
Wow, I loved Shiro’s development, he was so amazing. I was right to trust the show writers when everyone was freaking out about him not piloting a lion anymore. And he did get an altean arm !!!
edit - OH ! I forgott to add him being canonically mlm and chronically ill ? Blew my mind ?! I loved it. It feels the SDCC was so long ago already, but it is, indeed, s7 content too !!!!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
No Castle ship anymore, so the whole journey will have very different vibes I’m sure. Longer journey, less distractions, everyone in their respective lions… Kind of hoping for a bit of a roadmovie vibe maybe ?
Oh, absolutely. Loved the little slice of life moments. That part with “who goes in which lion and what do we do with the pets” was so cute lol.
Tumblr media
Will the “long sleep” spoiler Kimberley let slip happen then ? Will they need to go in cryosleep for the journey ? Or is it something else entirely ?
Sooo... was it about the time skip between s6 and s7 ? It didn’t feel like them sleeping...
Going back to Earth, how will that turn out ? Will they have prepared for the wars thanks to Sam’s warning ? Will the Galaxy Garrison have attempted to silence Sam ? Is Colleen up to something ? How will Earth react to Voltron and the War in general ? Will Earth already be under attack or become under attack ? I suspect Sendak has that in mind or will think of it soon !
Weeeell. Yes they prepared, yes the Garrison attempted to silence Sam, yes Colleen absolutely got involved, yes Earth got under attack, and yes, it was Sendak’s doing !!!
And in what time frame will they come to Earth ? They have been travelling through space and we know time can do weird things. I didn’t think they would necessarily take it into account in VLD, but Keith’s and Krolia’s experience in the Quantum Abyss show they are not afraid to do it. I’m a bit worried they come home a long, long time after leaving, that could lead to some big angst for those with families back on Earth (*squints at the Garrison Trio*). But yeah big question about what Earth will be up to when they come back !
They totally did that... There was  indeed a timeskip, even if it was about them being in the rift more than theory of relativity.
At least it wasn’t as bad as I feared - I was scared they would come centuries late and their families would be long gone. We still did some family angst for Hunk and it killed me. Loved the family reunions for Lance and Pidge though.
Tumblr media
What will be going on with the Galra Empire ? They are without Emperor again. Will Haggar somehow take the lead ? What is Haggar up to after Oriande, regaining more and more of her memories… Will someone else step up ? Will Lotor be back sooner than expected ? (Come on, I don’t believe he’s dead).
Will we hear again about the other realities ? In s6 Lotor sounded a lot like those Alteans for the other reality, and he was in the Rift…
We don’t know anything yet, aside from the Galra Empire still being divided, but what we discovered at the very end is a big clue. That mecha could be either Lotor’s doing (either with the Colony or with the alternate reality Alteans), or Haggar’s (as she knows now about the Colony through Kuron). The robots attacks being reminiscent of the Komar, I think it might be Haggar’s doing.
I expect this to be a major plot point in s8.
Tumblr media
Oh, and what will Lotor’s generals do NOW ? Poor girls are in quite a situation here.
Oh wow I SO loved their character development ? Ezor and Zethryd were total badasses. Also, is it just me or were there major hints at them being in a relationship ?! I know I ship it !
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
And Acxa ?! Totally getting a redemption ark ?! I was so happy to see her and Keith fight side by side and support each other ? I’m so proud of her. Apparently she does seem to have a crush on Keith, aww. I suspect it is unrequited but he does respect her. Well, the future will tell us.
Tumblr media
(I did spent the rest of the season going “where is Acxa ?!” though. I guess this is for s8. I’m getting very curious, because if we didn’t get answers so far, I wouldn’t be surprised if something major is coming this way. Joining the Blades or the Rebels, maybe ?).
What were the Rebels and the Blades up to during S6 ? How did they react to Voltron siding with Lotor ?
Aaaaah ! ;___; I will come back to talk about this, but I knew the Blades and Rebels would be exposed. It still broke my heart to hear about it. And quiznack !!! Voltron writers, did you have to toy with my fear for Kolivan ?!!! I’ve been worried for him since s2. I really thought this was it for him. I’m so glad he survived !
Tumblr media
(yeah this is what worried me. Same for the entire Coalition. I’ll come back about this).
OMG more specifically I’d die to see some kind of reunion between Kolivan, Krolia and Keith. My hopes aren’t too high but DAMN. Kolivan sent them on a mission and didn’t get news of them for who knows how long, I bet he’s super worried, if he doesn’t believe them to be dead.
THANK YOU VOLTRON WRITERS !!! ;____;
Tumblr media Tumblr media
What about the altean colony ?! Of course Allura and Coran will want to visit. And Romelle has yet to tell them the horrible truth, hasn’t she ? And OMG as it was pointed out, Haggar knows about them now, oh I’m so worried…
Well, as I said above, this seems to be the next big thing in s8... I fear the worst.
Also, from this post about Hunk :
But when Allura introduced him to his lion, she said “As the leg of Voltron, you will lift the team up and hold them together.” I kind of hoped… he would be more open to the others. I mean, he cares, no doubt about that ; it’s telling, how emotional he got when Keith left. But he doesn’t seem to spend time and talk with his teammates that aren’t Lance or Pidge. He even seem to have bonded more with Matt than with Shiro, Keith or Allura, despite knowing him for a considerably shorter time. Which, again, I get : they have a lot in common. But it’s kind of telling that he stays with people within his comfort zone, and doesn’t seem to reach out that much to others ?
We see Lance evolving and finding his place as emotional support for the team, but Hunk is a leg too and… I think he still has room to improve ? Maybe it’s something he still has to learn and that we will see in the future ? I’d like that.
He shone so bright in “The journey within” ?! ;___; I loved him calming everyone down. Even staying completely unfazed and positive when Keith snaps at him and calls him a coward. And when Keith attempted to leave and he just grabbed his ankle and went “NO !”... I might have squeed a little. :3
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Other stuff that I wished for and I got (even if I don’t necessarily made posts on it):
Keith and Shiro keeping saving each other and holding each other. More insight about their past ! Keith calling Krolia “mom” and them hugging ! Keith and Krolia mourning Keith’s father ! Romelle bonding with the team ! Positive interactions between Keith and Lance ! AND THAT KEITH & HUNK BONDING HAAAAA I wanted it since the Weblum episode and it was so good. Keith and Pidge teaming up.  Getting to know Lance’s family ! (I so love Veronica !). Flashbacks for Hunk’s family !!! Cute Pidge and Lance interactions ! More space wolf shenanigans, and we get to know his name (it was so endearing that Keith just wanted to wait until he would tell him !). SHAY COMING BACK TO HUNK !!! I had given up hope on that one after so long. More allurance cute moments.
Tumblr media
I’m probably forgetting some stuff but...yeah. What a good season.
I’ll come back yelling about a few things very soon ! :)

I hate when my brain decides things without me.
Brain: We are doing XYZ
Me: wait, what? No! When did we decide that?! I was not there for this discussion.
Brain: I have decided.
Me: We are most definitely NOT doing that!! Bad idea! Not safe! Not doing it. Not good. Bad!
Brain: I have decided.

I'm in a wildemount campaign and my char has interacted with the Traveller a few times (in the guise of a gnomish merchant who sells me highly suspicious magic items) - a few sessions ago my dm spent a full ten minutes setting up a Bit just for me so that he could use the line "can I offer you a nice egg in this trying time"
Tumblr media
Also once we captured an extremely scary and powerful undead archfey using planar binding and then turned him into a kitten and dressed him up
amazing?? i haven't introduced many actual cr npcs into my wildemount campaign (they started in asarius so they met zethris olios but otherwise i've been mostly keeping to new plots so im not comparing my ability to play certain characters to matt's), but artagan is always a great one for any campaign if your dm can do it right :D

My current Hot Take prediction of who the traitor in the Kryn Dynasty is:
Lady Zethris Olios, the drow leader they first encountered in the City of Beasts.
She’s a supposedly powerful Den Mother who’s nonetheless stationed out on the frontier in Asarius, away from the Dynasty capital. Maybe she’s resentful of her peripheral position. Maybe she was easily swayed to hand over a Beacon to the Empire, with the promise of war to follow which would strengthen her own power in a city closer to the border, and more useful in wartime.
I’m putting this Take out there now on the extreme off chance I’m right.

Accents of Exandria
I’m doing this more by accent rather than by location first, due to accent diversity in major cities and racial ties to certain accents.
One thing to note: accents in fiction are important signifiers of class and background based on our own preconceived notions, and it’s worth keeping that in mind. For example, most people associate an RP British accent with being upper class and educated, and the characters who speak in this accent typically are either nobility, wealthy, educated, or all three, even if they come from very different regions. It’s a common shorthand in media and that includes Critical Role. Consider Lord of The Rings - Sam and Frodo are of the same race and in the same region with the same native language, but they have very different accents to show that Frodo is wealthy, worldly, and highly educated, and Sam is more working-class and provincial.
Obviously spoilers for both campaigns all over and I’m sure I’ve left plenty of things out - feel free to send me suggestions! I’m sure I will write a follow-up at some point.
And finally, I am just a nerd who loves accents. I took a few linguistics classes in college and learn about them in my free time, but I’m no expert, so if you are one or have corrections let me know!
Scottish: Dwarvish, and by extension places primarily populated by dwarves. Examples: Kraghammer.
RP British: a large number of elves (including many drow), educated/upper-class people (especially humans). Examples: Percy, Vex, Vax, the elves of Syngorn, High Bearer Vord, Lieve’tel, the Briarwoods, Taryon, Zahra, Yussah. Artagan seems to have this too, further indicating an elvish/fey influence. Vex and Vax have a bit more of a drawl than Percy’s more clipped accent, which could partially be a personality difference and partially their more humble, frontier childhood in Byroden. This also seems to be Fjord’s original accent, indicating some level of education (which we know is the case - he’s quite intelligent and trained in history).
Mid-Atlantic: The Old Hollywood one, not the Tidewater one. Sort of in between RP and US Neutral (hence the name Mid-Atlantic - it’s seen as a blend between British and U.S. accents). Also seen in a lot of educated/upper-class people who aren’t elves, and people imitating them. Examples: most of Emon’s upper class including the Tal’Dorei family and Allura. This is probably not Gilmore’s native accent, but it’s his accent now. I’d put Scanlan here as well, which fits, particularly since this accent was the ‘theater’ accent in the first half of 20th Century America.
United States ‘non-regional’: Westruun, the Air Ashari, a lot of regular middle-class humans, halflings, and gnomes, a lot of Firbolgs, Shady Creek Run. Examples: Keyleth, Beau, Caduceus, Kima, Pike, Kerrek, Kashaw, Thorbir, Lyra, Keg, Tova, Twiggy, Yeza, and a whole lot more. The Doylist explanation for this is that all of the main cast and most guests speak like this normally, and not all guests are comfortable playing an improv-based game that many of them have never played before while also doing accent work; as such it’s sort of a catch-all for a lot of average people. In Westruun in particular it sometimes skews a bit midwestern (slightly flatter vowels - compare Kima’s accent to most of the other people on the list).
United States southern: unclear but my guess is based in the north of the continent, perhaps along the Empire’s borders: Starosta Wyatt, a halfling in Zadash, has this accent; Fjord has a deeper version which is in turn an imitation of Vandran; Lorenzo and Wursh both have it as well which raises the question whether this might be related to ogre/orcish languages. Note that the accents many people would class as Southern in the US encompass a pretty broad region. IIRC Wyatt sounded a bit more Appalachian whereas Fjord (so Vandran) sounds more Texan.
Irish: I think we’ve seen this most consistently in Kymal (notably in Kaylie), but Molly also has an Irish accent so I wonder if it’s particularly common among entertainers? On the other hand we have no reason to believe Molly didn’t have this accent in previous lives as well.
German: Zemni Fields. Explicitly linked to a region of the Empire and to a language that is distinct from Common or any of the racial languages. Zemnian as a language is still alive and well, and the Zemnian people are as far as we’ve seen well-integrated into the Empire’s fabric - Caleb’s parents were very pro-Empire, Zemnians are found in high positions, Dairon notes that a Zemnian accent in Xhorhas would be recognized as Dwendalian, and Zemnian words are used in Zadash pretty regularly (Zauberspire, for example). As a result this seems to indicate that while the Empire took over Zemni Fields, they let Zemnians maintain their culture. Examples: Caleb, Trent, Ophelia Mardun.
French: Menagerie Coast, Bisaft Island. Unclear exactly where on the coast. Examples: Avantika, Vera. Interestingly, other French-based accents (like Cajun) are also seen in this region (eg: Orly) which might imply that there’s a fantasy French equivalent (a la Zemnian for German) spoken in this region with varying dialects.
Eastern European: Unclear, but actually this is not uncommon in Tieflings - not only is it Jester and Marion’s accent despite them having a somewhat French-sounding last name, but it’s also seen in Campaign 1 for both Vanessa of the Slayer’s Take and Lillith. But Cree (Tabaxi) has it as well. Eastern European is also a pretty broad term and IRL Eastern Europe encompasses a whole lot of different languages, not all of which are related. Anecdotally, Jester’s accent reminds me of a few native Romanian speakers I know. Overall, seems to be mostly Tieflings and Wildemount.
Russian: in the notes Matt’s published, this is stated to be Oremid Hass’s accent as well as some others in Zadash. Seems to be specific to the Empire - some of the towns (eg: Nogvorot) have Russian-sounding names, but the region is unclear.
Scandinavian: thus far only seen in Yasha, so this may be specific to the Iotha marshes of Xhorhas.
Working Class London-ish accent: rough types more so than any region. It’s Grog’s accent and the accent of the Herd of Storms, but we also see similar accents among some of the criminal types in Zadash, along the way to Shady Creek Run, and at the Sour Nest.
Southern European: I’m not positive about the Kryn Dynasty upper-class accent found among many members of the consecuted Dens, but it sounds a little Greek or a little Spanish, depending (thanks, the International Dialects of English Archives!) Examples: Zethris Olios, Leylas Krynn, Shadowhand Essik.

Can you imagine Lady Zethris’s reaction when she hears about the Beacon though? These strangely effective mercenaries, who when the first came to her listed alcoholism as a special talent, and are just weird in general but surprisingly efficient, go off to meet the Bright Queen, while insisting on bringing their huge snarling cats, and she leaves them to it. Then word gets to her that these tumbleweeds returned their sacred artifact to them and are national heroes. Like just imagine how she must feel right there.
