Today on "I don't do AUs but here I am thinking about it anyway":
Sci-fi world where Laudna is alone drifting across the periphery of the galaxy in her decrepit spaceship. The ship's AI is named Pâté, and he's a little weird (and quite horny, even for a ship AI). Both the ship and Laudna are in a pretty sorry state, but there's a nanobot infestation on board running a variant of the Briarwood virus that's somehow keeping Laudna and the ship alive. The virus program calls itself Delilah.
And because of the virus, Laudna isn't welcome on any of the core worlds. She wanders the fringes of civilization gathering whatever she can to keep moving. She was from planet Whitestone a long time ago, but then the Briarwood blight came and eradicated most of her homeworld. Laudna was killed and somehow resurrected by the virus (she doesn't understand how any of this works). And she's heard that the old ruling family of the de Rolos have returned and reclaimed the planet, but she's so far away now that it just feels like a bed time story.
So she's drifting through the periphery when she comes across the planet Gelvaan, which is quite low-tech in comparison to the core worlds. They don't have sophisticated scanners, so Laudna can hide out in system, recharge her ship and resupply. Then she meets Imogen, another loner who leaves the planet surface every now and then to get away from the people. Imogen's ship is named Flora, and Flora isn't a true AI, more like a finicky navigation system. Flora doesn't even talk.
And Imogen is human, mostly. She says her father was a regular guy, but her mother must have been augmented or gene-modded. Because Imogen's mother had some wild mind powers, and Imogen has them too. Imogen dreams of red moons and red storms, she can hear the thoughts of other people, even without trying sometimes, so staying on the planet is very hard on her. Imogen thinks of leaving Gelvaan, of venturing out into the galaxy to learn about her mother.
So when Laudna says they should go together, Imogen leaps at the chance. Here's someone whose thoughts don't hurt. And sure, maybe Laudna can look a little scary sometimes, but she's a nice person, even if Pâté is a little weird. And Laudna is thrilled, because no one has ever wanted to stay with her before. So yes, Laudna will take Imogen to Jrusar, even if it's light-years away and she has no idea how to get there. She will risk going to one of the core worlds if Imogen wants to go.

Hi! So I feel selfish since I've already requested a fic from you, but since you posted that new prompt list, could you please do #10 from The Comforter list? I don't care who says it as long as they are saying it to Julian! ❤️
anon I love youuuu <333 never be shy about asking me for fics I will happily take 695876934 requests from you
so 10 from the comforter list is... "You're only going to make it worse by not resting." and I love that and I love it applied to Julian
I decided to spread the Miles/Keiko/Julian agenda with this one- hope that's alright! this is set sometime nebulously before Keiko's pregnancy with Kirayoshi, so sometime in s3 maybe?
anyways! please enjoy <3
It was only a matter of time before something like this happened.
The station's been dealing with an outbreak of Bajoran Red Fever. It's a nasty sickness, not fatal in most cases, but it can be pretty dangerous for younger children. It's also a pain in the ass to try to kick; the main symptoms being sky-high fever, dizziness and severe weakness, nausea, and some nasty joint pain. Luckily for the non-Bajoran occupants of DS9, it's a disease that really only affects Bajorans. There have only been a handful of non-Bajorans who have ever caught the diseases.
Unluckily, Julian is one of those non-Bajorans.
"How'd he even get it?" Miles asks, still trying to wrap his head around this whole thing, "I thought non-Bajoran cases were something like one in a million- that's what he was always saying, at least."
Nurse Jabara, wearing a face mask over her mouth and nose, gives a tired shrug as she rubs her temple. "The odds were slim, but not impossible. If I had to guess, I'd say the constant, repeated exposure on top of not nearly enough rest probably did it," She pinches the bridge of her nose, grimacing like she has a headache, "Whatever the case, he has it."
Keiko looks up from where she's checking the medkit Jabara gave her. "You said he fainted, right?" She asks. Jabara nods, so she follows up, "Did he hurt himself? Do we have to worry about, I don't know, a concussion? Anything like that?"
"No," Jabara confirms, and Keiko breathes a sigh of relief, "Lucky for him, Nurse T'Strei has great reflexes, and caught him before he fell. Speaking of which, she's probably not having a great time trying to keep him in bed," She gives Miles a look that is so, so very tired, "We've had patients coming in all morning. You can imagine how he's taking being laid up."
"Say no more," Miles doesn't need to imagine- he knows Julian will be about beside himself, "We'll take him off your hands. You said those shots you gave us will protect us from the fever?" He checks.
"You're as close to immune as you can be," Jabara nods, "There's one in there for Molly, too, just in case you can't keep her away from him. Believe me, asking your family to do this wasn't my first choice, but we aren't exactly blessed with options," She sighs, "Everybody who is resistant to the fever is busy working overtime to make up for everybody who's down with it, and I can't put him with anybody who's susceptible to infection. Commander Dax tried to insist, but joined Trill can contract the fever, and it could be deadly to her and the symbiont, and-"
"Jabara," Keiko steps in, places a gentle hand on the nurse's arm to stop her rambling, "It's ok. We'll take care of him." She reassures her.
Jabara pauses. Takes a deep breath. "Thank you," She breathes, "It's been... certainly one of the longer mornings of my career. Let me take you to him before T'Strei decides to sedate him." She says.
"If she hasn't already." Miles cracks, which earns him a nudge in the ribs from Keiko.
They follow after Jabara as she leads them further into the infirmary. It's pretty busy, mostly full of Bajorans, and all of them are masked up. The only people not masked up are non-Bajorans, though Miles notices that a few of the human staff are wearing masks. Probably since their human Chief Medical Officer went and got himself infected.
Speaking of the devil, it doesn't take long to find him. They just have to follow the sound of the arguing.
"This is hardly necessary."
"You are not presently fit to deem what is necessary."
Jabara stops, and gestures for them to go ahead into a separate area. Miles and Keiko both nod to her, and continue on.
Miles has to bite the inside of his cheek to keep from laughing at the scene they walk into. Because, sure, he's worried about Julian. Of course he is. But it's also very funny to see Julian lying on a biobed, with T'Strei sitting beside him and effortlessly keeping him pinned down to said bed with one hand on his chest.
"I have patients," Julian is insisting, even though he looks half-dead himself, "I have to finish my morning rounds, and then I need to-"
"If you can push me off," T'Strei cuts in, sounding like she's said this a million times over, "Then you can go."
"That is so not fair." Julian pouts.
Miles decides now is the moment to clear his throat and announce his presence. Both Julian and T'Strei look over at him, though he directs his attention to Julian. "Julian," He says, crossing his arms over his chest, "Are you disobeying doctor's orders?"
"Yes." T'Strei replies flatly.
"I'm the doctor," Julian huffs, indignant, "I give the orders."
"Which you are not following," T'Strei points out. She looks at Miles, "I assume you both are here to collect him?" She asks.
Keiko steps closer. "We are," She confirms. She's got a much more gentle touch than T'Strei and Miles do, bless her, as she goes and puts a gentle hand on Julian's cheek, "Nurse Jabara called us. How are you feeling?" She asks.
It's like a magic trick- Miles watches as all the defiance drains right out of Julian's expression, melted away by the simple touch of Keiko's hand. With all his defiance goes all his energy, and all the colour in his face. God, he looks awful- pale under his skin, and his eyes too-bright with fever.
"I'm alright," Julian tells Keiko, in a raspy voice that's anything but alright, "Honestly, Keiko, you didn't need to come."
Miles and T'Strei exchange a can you believe this bullshit look.
"Liar," Keiko accuses gently. She brings her hand up to his forehead, presses the backs of her knuckles against his pale skin, "You're burning up, Julian. You're not well. You need rest." She insists.
"Which is exactly what you're gonna get," Miles puts in, stepping over to join Keiko at Julian's bedside, "You're comin' home with us. That way, we can keep an eye on you. Make sure you actually get some rest, which we all know you're not gonna be gettin' in here." He explains.
"Oh, I- I couldn't ask you to do that," Julian says, looking as pathetic as a puppy in the rain, "I could get you sick, and what about Molly? I couldn't-"
"We got our shots done," Miles interrupts, "And we have one for Molly, too. So, no arguing," He looks up at T'Strei, "We can take him from here, Lieutenant. We'll get him outta your hair."
"Human expression." Julian says quietly, as T'Strei frowns at the statement. Then she nods, and takes her hand away, stepping back to let Miles and Keiko each grab an arm and gently ease Julian up into a sitting position.
"Thank you, Chief," T'Strei bids, "Mrs. O'Brien," She nods to Keiko, "If he gives you any trouble, do not hesitate to call. I can be available for assistance very quickly." She gives Julian a pointed look as she says that last part.
"I'm sure we can handle him," Keiko says as they get Julian off the biobed and onto wobbly legs. Miles is inclined to agree with her, considering Julian's already leaning heavily into his shoulder, the act of standing up apparently a significant drain on his energy, "C'mon, Julian, let's get you home. I've got everything you need right here." She shows him the medkit.
"Computer," Miles summons, seeing no point in dragging Julian through the long walk, "Three to transport to Chief O'Brien's quarters. Energize."
Miles wraps his arm tight around Julian's waist to hold him upright through the transport. One second they're in the infirmary, the next they're in the living room. Julian sways slightly, wobbling, and Keiko puts a hand on his chest to help steady him.
"Easy does it, Julian," She murmurs, starting to guide him towards the couch, "You poor thing, what made you think you could work like this? You're barely standing." She admonishes, her voice laced with concern.
Julian doesn't answer until they get him sitting down. He doesn't so much lean back as he does fall back against the cushions, his eyes glassy and unfocused. "I had patients," He mumbles, blinking a few times- dizzy, probably, "I couldn't just leave them."
Miles takes a seat beside him. Keiko does the same thing on his other side. "You've got a perfectly competent medical staff who are more than capable of runnin' the ship while you're away," He points out, "How long have you been sick? Honestly. Cause somehow I doubt this started today." He hasn't actually seen Julian in days. Their usual holosuite date got cancelled due to the outbreak, so he hasn't been able to keep an eye on him.
Julian frowns, squinting as he thinks. "I don't know," He replies, and he sounds like he means it, "Maybe a couple days ago. It's... hard to keep track." He admits.
Keiko gently rubs her hand up and down his arm. "Julian," She says, in that soft voice of hers that could melt ice, "When was the last time you slept?" She asks.
There's the million dollar question. That's always the first thing Julian starts to go without- sleep. Like he thinks he's superhuman, and can just keep on going without it. Miles has known him to go days at a time without a wink of shuteye. He wouldn't be surprised if this is one of those times.
Julian looks at Keiko. "I don't know," He tells her, his voice very quiet, "I... I honestly don't know."
Even Miles can't keep up his usual attitude when Julian's like this. He sounds so goddamn tired and he looks even worse, with those big doe eyes of his all sad and pathetic.
"It's alright, Julian," He finds himself saying, a whole lot softer than he usually is, "Molly's got a big party all day, she won't be back till tomorrow. So you'll have plenty of time to catch up on your sleep here." He gives his hand a reassuring pat.
"You're only going to make it worse by not resting," Keiko adds, bringing her hand up to his cheek, "I know resting doesn't come easy to you, but promise me you'll at least try, ok?" She rubs her thumb affectionately over his cheekbone, "Promise me you'll let us take care of you?" She implores him.
Miles knows this game of Keiko's well. Nobody is immune to it. He's over here melting, and he's not even her target. Sure enough, Julian is cracking a smile. A small one, weak and watery, but a smile nonetheless.
"That's cheating," He accuses, his voice gone soft, "You know I can't say no when you do that."
Keiko gives him a smile of her own, a smile that could rival a sunrise. "That's exactly why I do it." She teases. Then she leans in, and gives him a gentle kiss on the cheek.
If Julian's face wasn't already flushed with fever, he's certainly blushing now, his cheeks going deep cherry red. "Miles." He says.
"Yeah?" Miles asks.
"I'm running away with your wife." Julian informs him, which makes Keiko snort and laugh.
"Not without me, you're not," Miles chuckles, giving Julian a playful nudge, careful to keep it light so he doesn't accidentally knock him over, "You can try that once you're all better. Until then, I'm not lettin' you outta my sight till you're better, ya hear?"
Julian looks over at him, still blushing, still smiling. "Loud and clear," He hums, "Do you have a kiss to go with that statement, or do I have to ask Keiko for another?"
Miles rolls his eyes. Keiko giggles. "At least you can still be obnoxious," He huffs. Even so, he does lean in and give Julian a quick peck on the temple, "There. Only cause you're sick." He tells him.
Julian's smile broadens into something resembling a grin. "You love me." He teases.
"Yes," Keiko leans in, gives Julian another kiss, this one landing high on his cheekbone, "We love you. And because we love you, we're going to take care of you," She gives Julian's shoulder a pat, "So you just lay back, and let us do the worrying for once, alright?"
Julian looks between them. And it's a subtle shift, but that mischievous grin softens, and turns into something much more affectionate and sincere. "I love you, too." He says to both of them, all sap and sweetness.
"Yeah, you're alright." Miles says, which gets him a laugh from Julian and an indignant swat from Keiko. What can he say, he's never been the best with all this sappy stuff.
Besides, they both know how he feels. He doesn't have to say it. He's never had to say it. They just know.

Which is the earliest time Jame Seymour should have been introduced in "The Tudors"? Since Jame had scored a place in Katherine of Aragon's court in 1529, she should have been introduced sometime during the last couple of episodes of s1, along with Edward and their father John.
After a recent rewatch, during the scene at the s1 finale where a nameless girl rebukes Anne Boleyn after her wishing that all Spaniards would be put under the sea speech, I thought that that part should have gone to Jane Seymour. That rebuke could have been one of Jane's first lines in the series.
You’re right, Jane should’ve been introduced earlier. The earliest Jane could’ve been at court was 1527, or more likely 1528, to my understanding. Katherine of Aragon made her speech at Blackfriars in 1529, and The Tudors leaned into the idea of Jane as connected to Katherine - the scene where Mary gives Jane Katherine's cross to help her through labor comes to mind. As for Anne, there were an assortment of... nameless, jittery blonde women swirling around her during the early seasons. The creators could've slotted Jane into one of their places. Maybe they meant to? I know there was some kerfuffle about her casting.
If the comparison scene between Jane & Anne before the latter's murder is anything to go off of, the creators wanted to set Jane up as ideologically opposed to Anne, to some extent. It would've been nice if Jane was given a more self-actualized role in that opposition, rather than being shown as this silly, flighty girl who stumbled into a position for which we're obviously supposed to judge her. I just know she and Katherine Howard are sharing tea cakes in hell.
Sir John's offscreen death in Season 3, and the casually callous way Edward communicated it to Jane, also would've landed much better if they'd introduced Jane earlier. Her and Edward's sibling dynamic is one of my favorites in the show, communicated subtly through shared looks, close ups and such. In Season 2, Jane follows Edward's lead, allowing him to influence her decision making something like a surrogate father. Jane is certainly the passive member of their relationship, but that wasn't used to cast her as stupid, or lesser than the other wives, which I appreciated. Edward asking Jane if she'd like to be Queen once he and his father start planning for it speaks to this dynamic that's sort of childish, in a sweet way - Edward leads and Jane follows, but willingly, not slavishly.
In Season 3, when Henry starts controlling Jane more overtly, Edward remains a man in her life who she's allowed to criticize and chastise, even as he's demonstrated to be brutally unscrupulous in his own right (see: that awful sexualized torture scene.) His wife Anne Stanhope is shown putting horns on him, but Edward barely notices, never mind getting mad at her for it. Compare that to how savagely Henry reacted to the vaguest whiff of infidelity in his Anne. The first one, that is.
It's almost like The Tudors' Henry is a decent public figure, but a monstrous domestic one, while The Tudors' Edward is a monstrous public figure, but a decent domestic one. And Jane is the woman who connects the two of them, binding their families into one, however temporarily. As Jane lays dying, Henry compares her to his late mother, and Jane is introduced to Henry by her own father, himself depicted as this jolly old fat country lord. Sir John's characterization in The Tudors was sparse, but maybe that's a blessing, considering the shaft Thomas Boleyn got.
Which leads me to another comparison. Thomas and George Boleyn's posthumous reputations both took a massive hit with this show. George is rendered not just abusive but sexually violent, the shadow of early 2000s homophobia hanging over The Tudors' portrayal like a pall. His father's depiction is more unfair than offensive, but that's not much of an improvement. This promo pic of him just makes you feel dirty, as Olga Hughes pointed out, lmao. We the audience can assume that Pádraic Delaney's George Boleyn got his cruelty from his father, while Anne (and Mary) are the family's more kindhearted diamonds-in-the-rough, a position that is reinforced by George's atypical protectiveness over Anne, which is ultimately used against him. Jane and Edward's relationship isn't as emotionally intimate as George and Anne's, but Edward and George's duel positions as men who are capable of being both negligent & violent and paternal & attentive sets them up as interesting examinations of the kind of man who takes root in an environment like this, much like Charles Brandon, Eustace Chapuys, Francis Bryan, etc.
The missing piece in the equation is Jane. Henry's fatherhood is well explored, Anne's sisterhood is the most overtly sympathetic part of her characterization, Mary I's conflict as a daughter is what drives her through the whole series. Jane is a sister, daughter, mother and wife, and there are a few shining moments where she really titillates: inquiring about her family's plans, selling the necklace Henry gave her, chiding Edward for mishandling her father's death, protecting Mary no matter the cost, things like that. But her most well-developed relationship is the one she has with Henry, and that one says more about him as a man than it does her as a woman.
How did Jane feel about Sir John that encouraged her to lean on Edward, even though he was easily identifiable as a worse man than his father? How did Jane feel transitioning from Katherine's household to Anne's, especially with regards to her catholicism? What did she think about the dissolution of the monasteries when it first started? Did she want to get married and have children, or did she just know she'd have to one day? What were her prospects before Henry? What does she like in a man anyways?
Unfortunately, we don't know, because The Tudors doesn't bother to tell us. Wish it had been different, to say the least.

Thinking about eldritch stuff plus weight gain again but this time actually played in a terrifying manner.
Someone reads a tablet or script of some long dead language that speaks of a Great Devourer and unknowingly begin to eat more by they day. And soon start eating stuff they shouldn't be able to. Plates, forks, chewing on counters when they aren't focusing. Taking whole bites out of those counters.
Their new diet makes their body change too. Such tough materials being swallowed in such quantities strengthens their throats and makes them swell with bloated muscle the better to sing the praises of their lord. The constant chewing hardens their teeth and reshapes their jaw to gnaw through the shackles keeping their lord from taking what it is owed by all. Their eyes turn a different color and when they look to others it almost feels like they're looking straight through them, to something far greater than their lowly presence to witness even a fraction of Guogloraat's true majesty is a hell I would not wish on my worst enemy yet these fools sprint towards such a fate.
And above all is their bodies. Bloated, almost cartoonishly exaggerated parodies of the human form, made rotund by days on end of nonstop gorging, fingers that can grasp nothing yet grip with strength to tear through steel, legs that bear the weight of dozens of people's worth yet do not buckle. The little clothing they wear not enough to cover the headache-inducing marks carved into folds upon folds of adipose by blades seen only in dreams.
Their mindless ramblings are ignored by all who witness them, the bystanders more concerned with the havoc they wreak in satisfying their appetite, tearing apart cars and street lights as though mere candies, ripping up whole chunks of the ground with their fingertips to cram down their throat, the rolls of their neck fat and many chins jiggling as they sing praises of the Coming Bite through mouthfuls of half-chewed steel. Yet out of the dozens, nay, hundreds who see such a disturbing display there are those who feel not revulsion but.
Hunger...

“father-daughter dance”
Stephanie and Bruce!
mmm not technically but i’m a huge sucker for them so i’ll do it anyway 💀 hope you enjoy!!
Tumblr media
“Just do it!” Tim hisses, shoving at Steph. Stephanie wastes no time on shoving him back, shooting him a murderous glare.
“No! What if he says no!”
“He’s not going to say no,” Tim says, and the two of them get locked in a scuffle, pushing and poking at one another.
A throat is cleared above their heads and they separate in the blink of an eye. Bruce raises a brow unimpressedly.
“Got to go,” Tim says in a rush, that dirty traiter. “But Bruce, Steph wants to ask you something!”
He’s gone before she can stop him, leaving Staph to start planning her revenge. That bastard is going to get it.
“Stephanie?” Bruce lords gently and she blinks back to the present.
“Oh, yeah,” she hesitates. Come on, just say it, what’s the worst that could happen?
He could say no, one voice chimes.
Or, another begins, he could say yes.
Ugh. Be strong, Steph. You aren’t a kickass vigilante for nothing.
“So you know how my relationship with my dad isn’t all that great?” she asks with a high pitched, nervous chuckle.
“Yes.” Bruce is, of course, aware of that.
“We have this thing coming up at school and I was hoping you’d come. Of course you don’t have to. I’d totally understand, but-“
“What kind of ‘thing’?” Bruce asks, and Steph gulps.
“…A father-daughter dance?”
Bruce is silent for a long, horrible moment. “Oh, Stephanie,” he finally says. “Yes, of course I’ll go with you. Thank you for inviting me.” He looks a little choked up, that bastard! If he cries, she’s going to cry and it’s going to turn into this whole thing.
“Great,” Steph says quickly. “Um, great. Thanks so much! I’m gonna go… find Tim now!” With that, she speeds away, heart pounding. Her chest is a weird mass of feelings, but Steph supposed, it’s not all that bad.

Gina Moriarty, a Reintroduction:
Hello! I'm Gina, I'm nearly 30, and I'm a jack of all trades!
I work in pharmacy, which I really enjoy, and have been in the industry for 5+ years.
I'm a LARPer, a hobby in which I can try on personalities, explore myself, and create stories with a huge range of people that I will remember for years. I try my best to document these on social media as LittleLarper.
I'm a voice actor and self-taught podcast editor, figuring things out as I go, and hoping to make an impact on the people we reach.
I'm passionate about people. I'm generous and kind and can't see an injustice without doing something about it.
I want to learn more about make-up, SFX, fashion and creating costumes.
I'm a dog and snake mama and wannabe cat mama.
I don’t want children, but I love my nephew and unborn nibling without question.
I love fantasy and sci-fi, especially Lord of the Rings and Mass Effect.
I love to organise, but my undiagnosed neurodivergency makes it difficult to maintain. I still love it anyway.
I'm engaged to my soulmate, someone who complements my strengths and weaknesses, who loves me as I am but still makes me want to be better.
I’m bisexual, biromantic, and still figuring out my gender. The closest identifier I have for myself is demigirl, and I use she/they pronouns. To me, personally, being bi and being pan are the same (ymmv).
I’m a perfectionist, hating things that I’m not very good at immediately, but I’ve also been very bad at recognising the things I am good at - which I’ve been working on in therapy.
I’m stubborn, and can be passive-aggressive, but I’m also compromising and a people-pleaser. These things seem at odds with each other but for me, they go hand-in-hand.
I have strengths (compassionate, intelligent, empathetic, creative) and I have flaws (stubborn, clumsy, dismissive, overthinking).
I am many things, have been others, and will be many more.
But I will always be me.

i'm always a huge sucker for childhood friends aus because that's one of my favorite narrative tropes (childhood best friends to lovers) but with sanuso it makes me feel so insane. i already headcanon that usopp and sanji wish they could've been in each others' lives as children, that maybe if they had each other then things could've been different. the loneliness and isolation wouldn't have hurt so much. that maybe if they had been childhood friends, it would explain the ache they feel whenever they're apart from one another.
when they dock on an island and are on grocery shopping duty together, sometimes the villagers selling them supplies are taken aback by how comfortable they are with each other, bantering, bickering and chatting in their typical dynamic. someone watching them comments that they must have grown up together with how close they are, and while usopp is laughing it off and plays along, it weighs kind of heavy in sanji's mind.
like, yeah, why does he feel so comfortable around usopp, even though he hasn't even known him for that long? which then leads to more thoughts, more daydreaming about scenarios where he's far away from germa. zeff's settled them on a small island where he sets up a restaurant. he meets another little boy who loves playing pirate, always has a fun story to share, lashes so long they remind him of dandelion fluff. he's never once made fun of sanji for being a clumsy crybaby. always shares his snack with sanji despite not having much.
it then happens one night, sanji's quiet but honest confession while they're alone together, laying on the deck of the sunny taking in the constellations. it's not been long since usopp reunited with them after water 7, so the pain is still there, that sanji could've lost him in such a way. that despite their closeness, his own protectiveness of their sniper, sanji couldn't save usopp from his own worst enemy: himself.
"i wish we could've been friends as kids," sanji says abruptly, his face getting hot when he can't help but just blurt it out what he's thinking, especially when he notices something sad pass over usopp's features. he suddenly thinks of usopp alone in his childhood home, nobody to cook him a meal or bandage his scraped knees. usopp then swallows around something difficult, unable to articulate a response but he nods in agreement. he sits up, scrubbing at his face with his still bandaged arm. sanji sees the wet shine of unshed tears clinging to those remarkably long lashes in the dull lantern light, but doesn't point it out. he just continues sitting with him and silently rubs his back.

last post complaining about genshin's writing for the month Anyway i think blorbofication happening in canon is the best way i could describe a lot of the problems i have with it ex. kaeya's relationship with diluc (or klee) is almost the only focus we get on him now, other than his brief appearance in the sumeru archon quest which was just saying his backstory basically with very little actual reaction or characterization on his part OR dainsleif's (also a problem i have in the albedo homunculus reveal in shadows amidst snowstorms). i haven't done his hangout because i. don't care enough to sit through an hour for each route with the quality of content hoyoverse puts out but looking at the ending options i feel like. they missed the opportunity to expand on things we already had for kaeya in favor of Oh he babysits klee! Oh albedo is here! Spend money to pull albedo!Venti cameo! What do you mean him and amber have a complicated dynamic. What do you mean he's apparently beloved by the elderly of mondstadt and the one who wraps up all the incidents there. What do you mean bennett trusts him as an omniscient big brother according to his official cn character profile. We made him talk to diluc again isn't that enough kaeya for you? and it sucks because kaeya feels like a rubik's cube with an onion's layers and like one of their best character personalities in content where he's actually kaeya and not just diluc's brother who is sad and also pretty! we never see anything about his relationship with jean, who he is the Most Trusted Aide of, or mondstadt at large! because every day we get closer to fanon kaeya being canon kaeya and it's just. You can have canon kaeya and fanon kaeya will follow but if fanon kaeya is at the forefront you're just immediately losing all that depth and it's going nowhere

thinking about Stinky Lakeside on the tristamp map and what the dark areas are.
Tumblr media
like sure it's the Great Sand Ocean but. it's all sand on that planet? are the borders just land that's been claimed vs free-for-all areas? but what separates the stretch in between cities and towns that makes it so different? Is it that those routes are well travelled and teeming with bandits, who dare not venture further lest they run out of supplies too far away from an area where they can restock?
Thoughts are being Thunk, but if there's an actual, confirmed reason on the difference between Colonized Sand and Scavenger's Sand, i'd be interested in knowing

hey snips! I've noticed that you haven't written anything about good ol' sergeant Hunter and I was wondering if you could do a Hunter x female senator maybe? In which the senator is placed under the Bad Batch's protection and the sarg falls head over heels for the reader? Thx 💗
so. this one kind of got away from me.
i didn't realize how long it ended up being until the end. sorry not sorry. part of me was like, i should make this more than one part, but then i decided against it and just figured it would be a helluva a long one-shot. either way, i hope y'all like it!
this ask has been in my inbox for a while, so i apologize for that. maybe it's tbb being on that got me in a hunter mood. oh well. i'm not going to complain. i hope you like it anon! let me know what y'all think! or if you want to see more hunter! *wink wink*
((as some warnings, there are threats against the reader's life. nothing specific, but it is talked about quite frequently as there is someone out there threatening her life. also, someone does get injured over the course of this one-shot and there's some canon typical violence. just want to cover my bases!))

--------------------------------------------------------
Of Senators and Sergeants
The threats against your life were just that, blank threats from individuals determined to slow you down. But they would never slow you down. The now near constant threats showed that you were on the right track. Clearly there were individuals who wanted you to stop digging, stop pursuing the answer, but that was never going to happen.
They would have to make true their threats for that to happen, and you doubted they had the guts to do that.
But your aides were worried.
And because they were worried about the threats and your seemingly lack of interest in the threats, they reached out to the Jedi Council about providing protection.
You didn’t like that. You didn’t need the protection and the Jedi were busy with the war effort. You were a senator from a small mid-rim planet with hardly any pull within the senate. You didn’t need a Jedi to be pulled from work that was benefiting the galaxy just to babysit you.
Thankfully the Council expressed something similar, stating they didn’t have any qualified Jedi handy to keep an eye on you. Which was fine. You didn’t need to be watched.
Unfortunately, they did assign a clone unit to act as your protection until the threats stopped. Apparently they had been on a few continuous missions and needed a “break” from the specialty missions they were always assigned to.
You weren’t against the clones, not at all. You admired their skill and brotherhood. You only wished they weren’t forced to fight in a war.
You were sitting at your desk when Hana, your closest aide, entered. “The unit assigned to protect you is here.”
You let out a sigh. “Show them in please.”
After setting aside your holopad and flimsi, you stood up just as the doors opened and four troopers walked in. You hadn’t been given much information on the men assigned to keep an eye on you. Just the name: Clone Force 99.
Of course you were beyond curious and spent many nights curled up in your apartment, when you should have been sleeping, researching the unit. You came to learn they handled incredibly specific missions designed for delicate care. It didn’t always turn out exactly like planned, but they had a near perfect success rate. Their unofficial name was the Bad Batch.
Honestly, the more you read about them, the more curious you became. Maybe this wouldn’t be the worst outcome.
“Welcome.” You said with a smile, walking around your desk to greet the four men. “I may not agree with needing protection, but I appreciate your coming.”
“Just doing our job ma’am.” The one in the center said, his bucket tucked neatly under his arm. You met his gaze and gave him a smile.
“Thank you Sergeant Hunter.”
“Wait, you know him?” The tallest (and biggest) man said, only to be elbowed by the one with a tattoo of a bullseye over his eye.
You smiled softly. “Not officially. When I learned you were assigned to me, I did some research. It is nice to meet all of you. I again apologize you have to take a break from missions that actually matter to babysit me.”
“Every mission is vital to us.” The man with yellow goggles stated, Tech if you remembered correctly.
“You keep saying you were against protection, may I ask why?” Sergeant Hunter asked and you let out an empty chuckle. You waved to Hana who nodded before leaving. Then you headed back to stand behind your desk.
“I was against protection. Clearly I am on the right path with my inquiries and I do not believe I am in any real danger.” You said, picking up your holopad.
“Your life has been threatened quite extensively. And the threats were incredibly descriptive and accelerating in quantity.” Tech said, looking up from his data pad.
“They are just that, threats. I do not believe I am in any real danger. They are trying to get me to stop digging into their illegal exploitation of my planet and I will not be easily startled.” You stated.
“What exactly are they doing on your planet?” Crosshair asked, playing with the small toothpick in his mouth.
You sighed. “They have been smuggling spice through our agriculture exports. Normally, our police would have put a stop to this sooner, but I fear that the local police have been bought off. It was brought to my attention by several of my constituents who have been starving. With spice being moved instead of produce, their livelihoods have been disrupted. And with the added pressure of the war effort, my people have been suffering.”
“Isn’t that a job for your governor?” Sergeant Hunter asked. “I mean, you’re just a senator.”
“You’re right. This should be the governor’s responsibility. But the current governor could care less. As long as money is still moving and his expensive taste is quenched, he does not bother.” You said. “I am getting close to determining who is responsible, but I cannot quite seem to find the last remaining piece. Your assignment to me was urgent because I plan on returning home tomorrow. There is only so much I can do from my office here. I hope that by going home I will finally be able to put an end to this.”
“Tech, Hana has a copy of my itinerary. Right now, we have an official itinerary that is just a diversion. According to that, I am attending a conference on Naboo. My actual travel plans are only known by her and myself. If you would like copies of both, please see her. From what I read, you seemed to be the logistical member of your team.” You said, turning to the man who looked up from his datapad.
“Excellent observation. I am indeed.”
“More like the most annoying member.” Wrecker laughed loudly.
“I do not see how being logical is the same as being annoying.”
“That’s because you’re annoying.”
“Alright. Tech, go get both schedules. Wrecker, go with him, but keep the arguing to a minimum. Check the hallways while you’re at it.” Sergeant Hunter jumped in and the two left, still bickering. “Cross-“
“-I know. Go check the departure location. There won’t be any surprises tomorrow.” Crosshair said before turning and leaving. The door shut behind him and you continued to flip through your flimsi.
“Are you sure you’re okay?” Sergeant Hunter spoke and it startled you slightly. You let out a sigh, hands stilling. “I read some of the threats, Tech was being generous with his description. Anyone would be afraid or at least concerned.”
“I appreciate the concern but I am not afraid or concerned. They are just threats. It will take more than empty words to sway me. I will be fine once my people are no longer suffering.”
He clearly wanted to pry further, but you quickly brought him up to speed on everything you had found so far. He didn’t quite buy your distraction, but didn’t fight it. You knew he would likely bring up your blasé attitude towards these threats again, but for now, he at least was offering some assistance.
By the end of your work day, Sergeant Hunter and Wrecker accompanied you to your apartment. You waited patiently with Wrecker, chatting with him pleasantly while the tracking expert cleared your apartment. He returned a few moments later.
“I didn’t see anything. We should be alright to enter.” He said and you strode right past him.
“See? They’re just threats.”
You didn’t give him a chance to answer before you headed into the kitchen. You pulled out a few already prepped meals and placed them on the counter. “This is for you as well. Please make sure you get something to eat. I am going to wash up and get ready for bed.”
Sergeant Hunter nodded. “Wrecker will keep watch outside your apartment and Tech and Crosshair will be on a nearby rooftop. I’ll stay here to keep watch. You will be safe.”
You gave him a nod of thanks, grabbing a piece of fruit before heading for your room and closing the door. You slumped against the door, letting out a shaky breath.
Was this really a good idea? Were you over your head and out of your depth?
You shook your head before pushing off the door. Now wasn’t the time to think like that. You were so close to finding out. You couldn’t give up now.
You spent the rest of the evening taking a long turn in the refresher, packing a light bag, and reviewing all the documents you had gathered up until this point. Earlier, you had sent the records to Tech after he assured you his datapad was unhackable and untraceable. It was nice to know that the Bad Batch was not only protecting you, but had realized they wouldn’t be able to stop you and had opted to assist you in your goal. You only hoped they didn’t end up regretting it.
There was a soft tap on your door just after midnight. You lowered your datapad and called them to enter.
Sergeant Hunter stepped in, not fully entering and keeping his eyes downcast. “Everything seems to be clear. If anything happens or you think you hear something-“
“Don’t worry Sergeant. I will call for you immediately.” You reassured and he nodded once before closing the door. You took another deep breath before setting aside your reading glasses and datapad, flicking off the light.
Maybe tonight you’ll actually get some sleep. Although you weren’t holding your breath.
-----------------
You must have dozed because you awoke to the sound of scratching at your window.
It snapped you awake instantly. You have lived here for years. You knew what sounds to expect for the area you lived in. And those were not normal.
Your heart began to race and you worked to keep your breathing even and not show signs that you were awake. Fighting against all of your instincts to act immediately, you slowly moved your hand under your pillow, fingers closing around the blaster you kept there.
Your entire body was tensed, ready to move at a moment's notice. And then it came. You heard the sound of the window being opened and you moved. You rolled out of bed and immediately fired two shots at the window. There was a shout from the figure at the window and you were forced to duck down when they returned several shots. Your bedroom door burst open and more shots were fired.
There was a brief break in the firing from the window and you peered back over the edge of the bed and fired. A body slammed into you and you were forced to the floor as more shots hit the wall opposite the window.
“Tech! Crosshair! Do you have eyes on them?” Sergeant Hunter shouted near your ear and you winced.
There was a muffled response and then silence.
You let out a breath of relief, slumping further against the floor. You opened your eyes to see Hunter already looking down at you. His body covering yours.
“Still think they’re just threats?”
You supposed you deserved that.
-----------------
You didn’t sleep the rest of the night. Once Sergeant Hunter had deemed it safe, he let you up from the floor and quickly ushered you into the living room. A blanket had been placed around your shoulders and reports from the rest of the batch trickled in.
They weren’t able to catch the culprit, but did find a few clues that may help point you in the direction of whoever hired them. Apparently even though they had been injured, likely from one of your shots, they were able to get away with help. The rest of the batch returned and set up a post much closer to the apartment.
You didn’t report the attack.
Sergeant Hunter had insisted, but you didn’t want anyone finding out because then security would tighten around you. You needed the freedom to move around when you got to your home planet. He also tried to talk you out of continuing with your plan, but you promptly ignored him.
The plans however, did change.
“I don’t like this idea, Hana.” You spoke to your closest aide who smiled sadly.
“You don’t have to like it. But it is what we are doing.”
After Hana found out about the attack, she insisted the plans change. Your official schedule still reflected a trip to Naboo, but instead of just no one attending in your place, Hana had insisted she go in your stead.
“Hana.”
“I am doing this Senator.” She said, placing her hand on your arm. “The guards will not know the difference. We need to make whoever attacked you think you are traveling to Naboo.”
You sighed. She was right, you just didn’t like it. It was one thing to place yourself in danger, it was another to ask a friend to do the same. “I spoke with Senator Amidala. Once you arrive, she will send for you and you will hide out at her private residence until everything has been resolved.”
“I appreciate that.” Hana turned to Sergeant Hunter. “Please make sure she does not get into any more trouble.”
“Hey!”
“I will ma’am.”
You crossed your arms, huffing in annoyance. Hana merely smiled at you. You pulled her into a quick hug. “Please stay safe.”
“You too, Senator.”
You pulled back, sniffling. You turned to the Sergeant. “I’m ready.”
And then the pair of you left. You and Hana had swapped clothes before leaving, but you still pulled up your hood to conceal your face. With the attack the night before, it had been decided that it would be best for the Bad Batch to take you to your home planet themselves. They had their own ship and hopefully those who were trying to kill you didn’t know that they were assigned to your protective detail. It was easier to control the situation with their own ship versus risking public transport.
Before you knew it, you were aboard their ship and on the way to your home planet.
The Batch for the most part left you alone. Wrecker had made a big show of giving you the best seat on the ship, aka the empty bunk towards the back of the ship. It wasn’t much, but it was sweet of him to try to make things a bit more comfortable for you.
About halfway through the trip, Sergeant Hunter came to check in on you.
“That was some pretty good shooting.” He said, startling you out of your review of your findings so far.
You felt your cheeks warm involuntarily and looked back down at your datapad. “It could have been better.”
“You still managed to hit the assailant, which isn’t easy to do, especially without training.”
“Who says I’m not trained?” You replied and he chuckled once.
“You may have been taught to shoot a blaster and have pretty good aim, but there’s a difference between that and proper training.” He said, taking a seat on the steps that lead up into the bunk you were sitting in.
“Is that a challenge, Sergeant?”
“Maybe it is.”
“Consider the challenge accepted. If I survive this, you’ll have to train me properly.” You returned to your datapad.
“Is there a reason you’re so set on proving this, even at risk of your own life? It seems you don’t care much for what happens to you.” Hunter said after a moment of silence and you clenched the datapad a little bit tighter.
“Incredibly bold of you to say Sergeant.”
“I’ve never been once to mince my words. Want to answer my question?” He countered and you let out a sigh.
“My people have always gotten the short end of the stick, ever since I was little. We always were the last to receive aid and no one really seemed to care about our concerns. I wanted to become a Senator so I could fight for my people the way no one else seemed to be willing. This is happening under my watch. I need to fix it for their sake. I don’t care what happens to me as long as my people can live without fear of starving or suffering.” You said, biting on your lip. “It’s foolish, I know, to think I can make a difference. But I have to try.”
“I think it’s admirable.” Hunter said and you looked up at him in surprise. “I don’t agree with your disregard for your own life, but I can admire your desire to give your people the best life they can have. We’ll do our best to help you and keep you alive to see the results Senator.”
You smiled softly. “Thank you Sergeant. Also, thank you for last night.”
Hunter shifted on the steps, clearing his throat and not looking at you. “It was no problem.”
“Still. If we all make it out of this, I will treat all of you to a meal. I promise.”
He smiled and you could feel your heart stutter for a moment. But you quickly pushed it away. Now was not the time for heart skip at the smile of an attractive Sergeant. You had more important things to worry about.
“Hunter?” Came Tech’s voice from the front of the ship. “We’ve arrived.”
-----------------
It was decided not long after landing that was best to split up, but stay relatively close.
Your research pointed to two possible locations of where the smuggling was centered. One seemed to be more heavily fortified and the other was just a hunch of yours and likely wouldn’t pan out. Sergeant Hunter had tried to convince you to stay behind, but you insisted on coming. Besides, if something happened when they were gone, you would be all alone.
Sure you could have handled it, but it was enough to convince Hunter to let you go along. Tech, Crosshair, and Wrecker would go for the more heavily fortified location of the docks. Hunter would accompany you to the location of your hunch. You didn’t know if it would pan out, but you had an unshakable feeling about the small seemingly normal storage unit.
After promising to maintain communication, the groups set off.
Your walk to the unit was quiet. It was late evening and most people had retired to their homes for the night. Which meant your walk was pleasant. Of course you were nervous of what you would find and hoped that you were right. Your people depended on it.
You both arrived near the storage unit relatively quickly. Hunter held up a fist to stop you both and motioned you to follow quietly. Your hand tightened around your blaster as you followed.
The storage unit area was empty, which was a bit strange. There was no one that you could see and you knew from your research that this place was usually pretty busy. It was enough to unnerve you.
The unit you were looking for was towards the back and in a dimly lit area. Hunter again motioned you to stay put and you obeyed, knowing he had more experience than you in this area. He listened against the door to the unit, before coming back to where you hid.
“I hear voices inside, but they’re faint. Almost like-”
“-there’s a secret unit and this is just the door.” You finished and he nodded.
“I think your hunch was right.”
That sent a swell of pride surging through you. You had been right. Something was going on and it did stem from here.
“Do we call the others?” You whispered, leaning closer.
He nodded. “I’ll send them a comm. We’ll wait until they get here and then investigate.”
You were about to agree when the door to the unit suddenly opened. Hunter’s hand found your shoulder and pushed you down, him following the motion. You could feel him behind you, eyes trained through the small gap of the crates you were crouching behind.
“-we need to move the supplies quickly.” came a voice and your blood ran cold.
Hunter must have felt you tense because he squeezed your shoulder. “What?” He breathed in your ear and you turned your head to look at him, nose brushing his chin.
“That’s the governor.”
The only reaction Hunter had was squeezing your shoulder again. You turned back to listen to the conversation and heard Hunter tap at his comm unit.
“Did you take care of the Senator?” The governor asked, clear disdain in his voice.
You winced slightly. Sure the governor and you didn’t exactly get along, but you didn’t think he had this much contempt for you. You didn’t think he cared enough to want you dead. But maybe you didn’t really know him at all.
“They were unable to kill her, but they tracked her to Naboo and will act soon.”
You were moving before you realized it. Even Hunter wasn’t able to stop you in time.
“It’s over, governor.” Your voice surprised the few individuals at the door to the unit, including the governor.
His surprise was quickly swallowed when he sneered at you. “I shouldn’t be surprised you managed to sneak on to the planet, you always were a nuisance.”
“You will be punished for this.”
He had the nerve to laugh. “No I won’t. Because you will never make it out of here alive.”
The men who were with him reached for their guns and once again, you were faster. You had shot one down and were shooting at the next by the time they drew their weapons. Hunter appeared beside you, shooting at the men that must have come from behind. The governor turned and began to ran, several men flanking him.
“Hunter!” You cried and he turned to look.
“Go! I’m right behind you!”
You moved immediately, chasing after him. For being such an old hermit, the governor sure moved fast. You caught up to him just outside of the units where a ship was waiting for him. You shot at one of the men with him, making them fall.
“Stop right there!”
The governor stopped at your words, slowly turning. He was still sneering at you.
“What do you hope to accomplish here? Even if I go down, the smuggling will continue. We are deeply entrenched here, nothing you can do will change that.” He said and you tightened your grip on your blaster.
“Doesn’t matter. I will not stop until the people are no longer suffering.”
He laughed.
“Hard to do that when you’re dead.”
You saw a flash of light and tried to duck, but this time you weren’t fast enough. A blaster bolt hit your arm and you fell backwards. You heard your name yelled and blinked open your eyes to see the Sergeant. His arm was supporting your back and pressing down on your wound.
“Hunter, he-” You started only for him to catch your pointing hand.
“It’s alright, I got him. He’s stunned. You did it.”
You let your head fall back, relief once again washing over you. You lifted your head to see Hunter watching you with worry, his hand still clutching yours.
Another flash of movement caught your eye and you saw one of the criminals getting up and raising a blaster at Hunter’s exposed back. You lunged for Hunter’s discarded blaster and shot, striking the man down before he had the chance to take the shot.
The Sergeant turned in time to see the man drop. He turned back to you as you dropped the blaster.
“Still think I need training?”
Hunter laughed and you felt yourself relax, vision starting to go dark. You could have sworn you heard him say something else, but it was lost to the ether as you slipped into unconsciousness.
In the days that followed, a clone battalion was dispatched and began weeding out the corruption that existed under the governor’s guidance. It didn’t take long, once he realized he was done for, he practically outed everyone without stopping to breathe.
Hana had commed you later in the days following to report that she was fine and would be returning to Coruscant to wait for you. You opted to stay a few days to make sure everything was taken care of. Your blaster wound was purely cosmetic, just a graze. It will likely scar, but you would have no other issues from it.
The Bad Batch had stuck around to help as well and then offered to escort you back to Coruscant. You were going to decline, but they had insisted and you found it was hard to say no to Wrecker, so you obliged.
It was your first day back at the Senate and your door was practically a revolving door with the amount of Senator’s coming to commend you on your actions. Some were genuine, some you could tell they wanted you on their side when it came to upcoming voting. You smiled at all of them and kept your answers as curt as possible. It was better this way.
Late in the afternoon the visits finally stopped and you were able to get some actual work done.
The door opened and you sighed. “Hana, please tell whatever senator that is here that I’m not here. Tell them anything, just let me have a minute to get some work done.”
“I’ll go if you want.”
Your head snapped up to see Sergeant Hunter motioning to the door.
“No!” You said almost too quickly as you stood up. “It’s okay. I thought you were another senator.”
“Tired of their constant praises? You deserve all of it.” He replied and you cleared your throat, feeling your cheeks warm.
“No I just - I just want to go back to work. Go back to doing what I do best.” You said and he nodded as he slowly approached.
“I understand that. I just wanted to stop by before the boys and I head out.”
“Another mission?”
Hunter nodded. “There’s always another mission.”
“I stand by what I said before.” You said, continuing when Hunter looked at you with eyes narrowed. “I want to buy you all a nice meal for your help. I wouldn’t have been able to do it without you.”
“That’s not necessary ma’am.”
You said your name and he looked at you, surprised. “Please, call me by my name. I’d prefer it.”
He laughed lightly. “I think I can manage that.”
“Oh before you go.” You said, stepping around your desk and approaching Hunter. You placed a small piece of flimsi in his hand. “It’s my comm number. You did say you would train me.”
Hunter clutched the small piece in his hand before looking up at you with a faint smile on his face. “I’m starting to think you don’t need it. But name the time and place. I’ll be there.”
You smiled back. His hand enveloped yours and you squeezed his hand right back.
Sure your meeting was less than ideal and you did end up getting shot at the end, but you found that you’d do it all over again if it meant you got to meet Hunter. You didn’t know what came next, but you were excited to see where this went.

i’ve decided that post-canon Ed and Winry keep a little flock of chickens and it’s mostly a bunch of sweet hens that they and the kids dote on, but they also have a tiny yellow bantam rooster which Ed is in a FEUD with. they are NEMESES. this creature keeps escaping from the run and getting into things he shouldn’t and pecking at Ed’s ankles every chance he gets. the kids love him and ‘accidentally’ let him into the house where he causes utter chaos. Ed insists this is the most vile creature in the world. but of course everyone else who sees their altercations is just like “Ah. He has found a kindred spirit.”

I need to know. First is probably touch starved thanks to all the shit that happened to him before his death, right? Which of the chain make it their mission to fix it?
Ok so I saw this ask, sat down, and started writing. So I hope you don’t mind but I’ll be answering your question in fic form
(And it’s more than 1k so I’m just gonna…hide it beneath the cut lol)
Sky breathes in deep and closes his eyes. The tantalizing smell of pumpkin soup wafts to his nostrils, mingling with the smokiness of the fire. The sounds of its crackling and the cheery talk of his companions reach his ears, and he smiles.
It’s been a long, tiring day for them all, but moments like this make it well worth it. The bruises from today’s battles may still ache, and the cuts still sting, yet at the end of it, they have one another.
He allows himself another moment of dark bliss, then opens his eyes. Taking in the sight of the heroes only makes his smile grow.
Across the fire Wild grins and nudges Twilight with his elbow, both of them chuckling over some shared joke. Legend and Warriors sit shoulder to shoulder. Their friendly teasing can be heard from where Sky sits. Wind has settled down beside Time, and though Sky can’t make out what their conversation is about, it seems like the older hero is telling the sailor a story.
Four sits off to the side, engrossed in a book, a soft smile on his face. And Hyrule joins in Twilight and Wild’s conversation now, the laughter growing louder at his cheeky contribution.
Everyone seems happy and light. Perhaps, more so than they have been for a while.
…well, maybe not everyone. Sky sits upright abruptly, scanning the camp for their little group’s newest member. He could have sworn the hero had been right here moments ago. Where had he slipped off to?
Aha.
Sky catches sight of the now familiar silhouette, dark and shadowy against the light of the moon. First sits a short distance away, back to the camp, face upturned to take in the sky. His cape floats lazily upon the breeze.
The Skyloftian takes another glance around the group and makes his decision. He rises.
Though First is much more at ease with the other heroes now, he can still be a bit aloof. Not that Sky blames him. Being with a group can be difficult, especially when constant danger is added to the mix. And after everything the knight has been through his behavior makes sense.
Still, Sky can’t bring himself to believe First actually wants to be alone. He’s seen the yearning in his eyes when he sees the others teasing one another, hugging one another, easy and companionable as family members. And he’s not the only one either.
“There’s no way he doesn’t actually want to sit with us,” Wild had whispered one day when First had broken away yet again to sit alone. “Going as long as he did without anyone even touching him? It’s torture.”
Time had nodded, expression solemn but understanding. “He’s scared. Give him time.”
So, Sky had given him time. Time to adjust and learn to trust them, time to find his footing in a time that was not his own. But First hadn’t stopped putting distance between himself and the others. And Sky is tired of waiting
It’s clear that the knight needs someone else to make the first step. So, tonight he intends to do just that.
It worked with Legend. If he’s lucky, it’ll work with First too.
And so, leaving the comfort of the fire behind, he walks to First’s side.
First doesn’t startle at his approach, but he does turn at the sound of his footsteps. He looks up at him, gaze sharp and cold. If he weren’t accustomed to it by now, Sky would likely turn tail and rush back to the others.
“Hi,” he says, instead, holding up a hand in a little wave. “Mind if I join you?”
Instantly, First’s expression softens.
“Of course not.”
He gestures toward the spot beside him. Sky settles down, sliding close so his shoulder bumps First’s. Though the knight tenses slightly, he doesn’t move away. The Skyloftian is more than happy to count that as a win.
“What’re you doing over here by yourself?” he asks, casually. “It’s much warmer by the fire.”
First hums. He’s looking at the sky again, pale hair and skin giving him an almost otherworldly look beneath the moon’s glow.
“You can see the stars better from here.”
Sky knows that’s a lie. The stars are bright enough to be seen from virtually any angle and the little clearing they’ve made their camp in is among the best. But he lets it slide.
“They’re beautiful,” he says and First nods.
“Every age of Hyrule is unique and their skies are no exception.” A smile tugs at First’s lips. “But somehow the stars are always the same.”
Sky grins. He knows well the comfort of Hyrule’s skies. The same constellations he once gazed at from atop the academy can be seen from Lon Lon Ranch or the Dueling Peaks.
“It’s true. See?” He points and First follows the direction of his finger. “There’s the Loftwing Constellation I used to see on Skyloft. It’s always been my favorite.”
First’s smile grows a bit larger, some of the tension bleeding from his shoulders.
“It’s mine too.”
Emboldened, Sky gestures to another cluster of stars.
“I’ve gotta admit, though, I’ve always been fond of the First Hero.”
First stares at the constellation for a moment. Then, with a chuckle, he shakes his head.
“Now, you're just flattering me.”
He shivers a little and Sky takes the opportunity to scoot closer.
“Here,” he says, untying his sailcloth. He stretches it so both he and First are enveloped in its warmth. “This will keep the cold out.”
First drags his gaze down from his star-gazing to skewer him with a questioning look. Sky meets it with a kind smile, and after a moment the hero relaxes. Carefully, he grasps his end, pulling it snugly over his shoulders. And Sky might be imagining it, but he’s almost certain First leans against him just a bit.
“Thank you,” he murmurs.
Sky can’t keep back the grin that lifts his lips.
“My pleasure.”
They sit in silence for a moment, bodies pressed close, eyes trained on the heavens above. Then, First breaks it.
“You don’t have to do this, you know. I appreciate the gesture, truly. But it is unnecessary.”
“Do what?” Sky asks, nonchalantly. “I just felt like spending some time with my predecessor.”
First turns to him, studying him in the darkness. Sky can tell without even looking at his face, that he doesn’t believe him. And after a few very awkward minutes pass he realizes something more genuine is in order.
“I like being with you, First,” he says, gently. He places a hand on First’s shoulder and the knight stiffens. Even in the dark, he can see the fractures in his usually guarded expression. “We all do. You don’t have to be alone.”
Something flits across First’s face, come and gone too fast for Sky to catch it. But before either of them can say anything more, Wild’s cheery voice rings out across the clearing.
“Dinner’s ready! Hurry on over unless you want us to eat it all!”
First looks away, quickly.
“I suppose we’d best head back,” he says, tone suspiciously level. “I don’t doubt their ability to scarf down everything in that pot.”
He doesn’t move, however, and Sky decides to take another chance. He gives him a gentle nudge.
“You’re right, we should go.”
Rising, he secures the clasp on the sailcloth once more. Something like remorse flashes across First’s face, but it is gone as quickly as it came. And when Sky turns to head back to camp, he follows him without comment.
Wild is ladling out generous portions of soup when they arrive. He hands them both bowls with a grin.
“It’s Twi’s recipe,” he says, “or more Yeto’s. Either way, don’t worry, I made seconds.”
Sky gives him an answering grin of his own. “Thanks, Champion.” He turns to First and waves a hand. “Come on, you can sit by me.”
The knight hesitates a moment, looking at the log the other heroes have made their seats upon with a mix of longing and trepidation. Then, he nods.
Sky settles down beside Legend, sending the veteran a smile as he does so. That sets First between him and Twilight.
The rancher greets First with a genial nod, which the knight returns as he sits down. Despite his easy movements and relaxed expression, however, Sky can feel the tension that radiates off of him in waves. But as they begin to eat and the conversation turns to favorite battle strategies, he slowly starts to relax.
And when they finish their meal and sleepiness brings their conversations to a lazier pace, the other heroes start to shift positions.
Slowly, they drift over as they always do, seeking the warmth and comfort of close proximity. But unlike other nights, where they usually group together in twos and threes, the heroes decide to form a giant cuddle pile. Even Time joins, though he sticks to the outskirts of it, his head resting on Warriors’ shoulder.
Everyone else snuggles close, lazily mumbling complaints about bony elbows and knees, and sighing as they find comfortable positions.
And First finds himself smack in the center of it all.
He sends Sky an almost worried glance as Wind squeezes between him and the rancher. The sailor huddles close, with a wide yawn.
“This was your plan the whole time, wasn’t it?” The knight whispers, accusingly. But even as he says it, Wind tugs at his cape, cuddling into its warmth. His expression softens and he reaches down, tucking the sailor in more comfortably.
Out of the corner of his eyes, Sky sees the rancher try and fail to hold back a smile.
“I didn’t plan anything,” he replies, innocently. “I think the soup just made everyone extra sleepy. Right, Twilight?”
Twilight nods. “Nothing puts you to sleep like a good bowl of soup. And Yeto’s is the best. Better than a sleep potion, I’d say.”
From First’s expression he doesn’t believe either of them. Regardless, he doesn’t complain after that.
And when his eyelids droop, he finally allows his head to drop onto Sky’s shoulder. Gently, Sky pulls the sailcloth over his shoulders once more. The knight blows out a small sigh of contentment and snuggles closer.
Sky smiles, reveling in this small victory.
“Goodnight, First,” he whispers, settling in and letting his eyes slip closed.
When First replies his words are slurred and thick with sleep. But Sky can hear the smile in them anyway.
“Goodnight, Sky.”
