listen. i know it's not 2014 anymore and i know it's just a throwaway line and that the russo brothers didnt intend for marvel action blockbuster captain america the winter soldier to become the tragic gay love story that never was but man. having steve say "it's kind of hard to find someone with shared life experience" in a conversation about romantic relationships right before the bucky reveal is so cruel. it's not just about steve and bucky obviously having the shared experience of being "out of time," it's the fact that they've both been stripped of their humanity in opposite directions. steve is a legend, he is an american hero and a national icon before he is a human being the same way that bucky is a weapon and a killing machine before he is a human being. steve knows that anyone who falls in love with him in the 21st century fell in love with captain america first, and that's just not him. but then the one person who knew him first and knew him best and loved him (not captain america, that little guy from brooklyn) so much he died for it is alive, impossibly. and it's a miracle because he's back and it's horrific because he's back under the worst possible circumstances. but to steve, the winter soldier is worth tearing the world apart for because he's always been bucky first. they find each other and suddenly they're human again. and maybe, despite it all, being "out of time" becomes a blessing, because in this century they'd finally be allowed to love each other the way they've always wanted to. like real people do.

like. no. the captain america trilogy isn't about two queer men traumatized and alienated by war and modern life rediscovering and reclaiming their humanity through their love for each other. but. i mean. it couldve been

THINGS  NOBODY  ANTICIPATES  AFTER  BEING  RELEASED  FROM  PRISON : freedom  apparently  feels  like  punching  a  bitch  in  the  face . said  bitch , naturally , being  Axel , standing  maybe  eight  feet  away , a  bottle  of  vodka  clutched  in  his  hand  with  the  door to  the  shabby  ass  motel  room  they’ve  rented  for  the  night  already  ajar  behind  him . just  looking  at  him  with  arched  brows , while  Tommy  tries  to  sort  through  the  mess  that  is  currently  coursing  through  his  inebriated  head . he  hadn’t  expected  Axel  to  be  the  one  to  come  pick  him  up . frankly , Tommy  had  believed  that  after  Axel’s  release  a  month  prior  to  his  own , the  guy  would  be  out  of  his  life  and  gone  forever  (  and  truth  be  told , he  wouldn’t  have  blamed  him  for  it  ) and  yet  he’d  been  the  one  standing  on  the  parking  lot . leaning  against  Tommy’s  Alfa , that  he  apparently  had  stolen  right  out  of  his  parents’  garage  after  Tommy , drunk  on  hooch  most  likely , had  told  him  his  address  at  some  point  in  the  past .

freedom  celebrations  had  happened  in  some  bar  just  outside  of  town  -  with  Axel  being  pretty  much  homeless  and  Tommy  having  decided  that  home  is  the  last  place  he  wants  to  be  at  right  now  -  and  after  fuck  knows  how  many  bottles  of  lager  and  whiskey  chasers , they  had  stolen  said  bottle  of  vodka  from  behind  the  bar  and  disappeared  into  the  night . he  has  cash  in  his  pocket , along  with  his  dad’s  credit  card , and  no  plans  or  expectations  tied  to  him  anymore . it  could  be  the  start  to  complete  and  utter  bliss  and  perfection  -  and  then  Axel  decides  to  open  his  mouth  and  blurt  out  that  stupid  as  fuck  question , that  entirely  derails  Tommy  and  simply  has  him  standing  there , dumbfounded , the  trail  of  thought  that  previously  had  revolved  around  why  the  fuck  has  he  picked  me  up ? lost  completely .

they  kind  of  hate  each  other . that  much  has  been  previously  established , and  judging  from  the  fact  that  he  really  does  feel  like  punching  Axel’s  lights  out , it  still  stands . they  also  have  kissed  before . not  once , not  twice , but  whenever  it  had  been  convenient  to  blame  it  on  pressure  rising  and  fuck  knows  what  other  bullshit  excuses  they  had  cooked  up . there  is  no  excuse  now , is  there ? I’m  drunk ; well , so  fucking  what , he’s  free . he  could  have  talked  up  any  girl  at  that  joint  and  she  probably  would  have  been  happy  to  join  him  for  a  night  of  post – prison  fun . same  cure  would  be  there  for  the  pressure , so  what  excuse  does  he  have  now ?

(  he  was  there  to  pick  me  up . him . he  had  cared . nobody  else . only  that  ridiculous  motherfucking , mohawk – wearing  son  of  a  bitch . fuck .  )

he  crosses  the  distance  between  them  in  two  easy  steps , one  hand  curled  into  the  fabric  of  Axel’s  shirt  just  on  his  chest , and  his  lips  almost  violently  collide  with  the  other  boy’s , forcing  him  into  a  step  back , right  against  the  doorframe . I’m  drunk  is  a  pretty  good  excuse . pressure  is  decent , too . who  the  fuck  cares  also  makes  it’s  way  up  there , but  the  loudest  of  them  unfortunately  is  he  cares . and  Tommy  hates  his  fucking  guts  for  it . along  with  his  own , when  his  free  hand  comes  up  to  cup  Axel’s  cheek , keep  him  place , body  pressed  almost  flush  against  his , effectively  pinning  him  against  that  doorframe  -  and  the  kiss  turns  into  something  a  little  softer , a  little  more  desperate ;  a peace  offering , almost .

when  he  eventually  takes  a  half – step  back  for  some  air , Tommy  still  glares  at  him  in  the  semi – dark  of  the  hallway . “ this  doesn’t  change  anything  and  I  still  fucking  hate  you . ” just  to  be  clear .

Lesbian is a multifaceted label that can describe many different experiences. There is no one perfect definition of lesbian that will encompass the entire diverse experiences that lesbians can have.

I'm personally a genderqueer woman who's exclusively attracted to other women, but the lesbian next to me might be a transmasc lesbian who loves all genders except for men. And the lesbian next to them might be a bigender lesbian who's both a girl and a boy, who's exclusively attracted to women. Our experiences can all be described by the term lesbian if that's how we wish to describe it, but we might define it differently based on our own experiences. And guess what?

None of our definitions are wrong, but none of our definitions will encompass every other lesbian's experiences. A word can have multiple definitions without any of the definitions being wrong. And those definitions can be very vague or very specific. Labels are made to fit us- we aren't made to fit labels.

People who may have a different experience with the lesbian label are not your enemies. People in lesbian spaces who aren't exactly like you are not your enemies. The problem comes when you try to force one singular definition on every single lesbian. THAT is harmful. Sending death threats to other lesbians because they don't have the same experience as you is harmful. Not another lesbian having a different experience from you.

i always get a little sad when people tell me they like scollace from just my fan art and haven't checked out any of the source material because like nothing i make is going to ever fully represent their dynamic and the joy of shipping to me is really engaging with the canon material and going crazy over breaking down the crumbs of content. and it's a nice comic series! even just watching the anime you're missing out on a lot without context from the comics.

so i guess for the record for anyone who's interested but don't know where to start, /especially/ if you're just here for roommate yaoi. start with the comics. it's the most "scollace-heavy" and it's only 6 books. starting with the anime would probably leave you really confused on why anyone ships them (or what's going on if this is your first exposure to scott pilgrim media) the movie is a fine entrance piece also, imho. like it lets you in on the dynamics between each character and the general plot (even though the characterization is pretty boiled down, but hey a lot of shots are 1:1 to the comics so that's fun.) but yeah. don't let my silly gay drawings dictate your shipping takes. read the books yourself! they're fun and if you're a fresh adult that still feels perma-14 you'll probably find it fun too.
