4. Where do you find inspiration for new ideas?

i almost exclusively write RPF, and so my inspiration for fics comes, 99% of the time, from real-life interactions (which is why i have written so very much landoscar recently, because WOW is there a lot of inspiration). the sterling work of the gif-makers, rippers, and fandom archivists on here does a lot of the heavy lifting for me! for instance, i wrote tell me where it hurts and i’ll make it hurt better having never previously considered fernando alonso in a sexual light because of the post-podium photos and because, frankly, i had taken half a gram of MDMA the night previous and needed something to distract myself while my brain chemistry sorted itself out 🤷‍♂️

following neatly on from that, i also have an absolutely fetid little swamp brain and spend about 75% of any given day thinking about truly disgusting sex stuff, and fic is an outlet for that. often i’ll have ideas floating around my mind for a while before i get round to them or even decide on a pairing, for instance a lot like life which features boot worship and fisting, two kinks i’d wanted to write for ages.

i have a pretty big backlog of horrendous ideas: charles/pierre knifeplay! toto and susie have a terrible toxic threesome with george (not sure i can write this one without accidentally turning it into toto x susie x reader ngl) (it’s me, i am reader)! fernando/lando follow-up with added oscar! toto forces christian to choke him! free use bimbofication lando norris!

i also get inspiration from other writers! whether it’s the line in @lost-decade’s fic you will find me if you let go that inspired me to write born and raised for the job, or all the incredible rule 63 fics like ego death by @beechersnope, trade offer by anon, and first by @flawlessassholes that inspired me to write girl!lando.

adagio by @theory81 - landoscar ballet AU! i don’t fuck with AUs very often but i’ve been waiting for a ballet AU in the F1 tag for a while and this is more than i could have hoped for. sweet, funny slowburn with a gorgeously camp, smart-dumb-brat lando POV.

jump right in by @strawberry-daiquiris - girl!lando/oscar WIP, theeeeee most perfect escapist slowburn, basically a shot of dopamine direct to the cerebral cortex. i finish every chapter grinning like an idiot.

climb up to your lips by @scenetocause - girl!oscar/lando WIP, soft femdom oscar, sweet and soft, feels like a slowburn even though they’re fucking increasingly nasty, perfect mixture of simping without being cloying, regularly melts my brain with the sex scenes.

god i could easily have made this a top ten this was HARD.

20. Have you noticed any patterns in your fics? Words/expressions that appear a lot, themes, common settings, etc?

oh absolutely. i am but a simple goblin. most of my fics explore uneven power dynamics, wet and messy kinks, sadomasochistic leanings, or poor communication.

i use way too many adverbs (stuff like definitely, absolutely, probably) and I have to CTRL+F for “seem” and “feel” before i post anything because i will use them every other sentence if i don’t pay attention.

most of my fics are set in hotel rooms or cooldown rooms. you know that post about hotel rooms being the liminal space in which sublimated desires are realised in sports RPF? yeah, that. i also write a lot about food? i like planning little details about scenes, like what they’re eating and drinking, and i often research restaurants in the area i’m writing about.

What Alice adaptations do you like best??

This post is going to be very long (I'm going to talk about 4 different adaptations)

(also this is a warning that if you're scared of the 1933 Alice in wonderland &/or creepy looking puppets, animal suits claymation or stop motion that I will have photos of those things in this post)

The 1972 Alice in wonderland has been my favorite for a while. It has my favorite Alice, and everything about the movie is just beautiful. The soundtrack isn't great and it can get a bit boring, but I'm very emotionally attached to this movie.

(also I love the frog footman in this movie)

Also, the 1949 Alice in wonderland is great. When I watched it I was really frustrated with how much time they spent on lewis Carroll's personal life 😭 but the rest of the movie is claymation & live action (with Alice being the only thing live action in it) and it's just so cool. Claymation I think is the coolest form of animation and I didn't even know this movie was claymation until I watched it

The 1933 Alice in wonderland is also one of my favorites, I think it's really great and I can't even explain why. I'm biased towards any Alice in wonderland adaptation with puppets in it. Sterling Holloway was also in this movie, he played the frog foot man, who's one of my favorite Alice in wonderland characters.

Another is the 1981 Alice in wonderland & through the looking glass, both about 30 minutes long because I believe they aired on tv. These were in a language I don't speak, but there's captioned & dubbed versions of it. It's my favorite animated adaptation, the art is extremely creative and the style is just beautiful. I like it a lot.

Lastly my favorite through the looking glass adaptation, the 1966 film. I can't even put it into words, I never stopped thinking about it since I had watched it. It's such a creative story and the sets are amazing and the songs are great and it's funny and it's interesting and it's just a really good movie. I don't know where these films get Alice's jester side kick from (please tell me if you do😭) but to be fair I've never even read ttlg. I do adore Lester tho, his song was my favorite, it's always in my head. The jabberwocky was a creative character as well, I didn't like his voice tho. But I liked his character. The plot kind of didn't make any sense but that doesn't really matter at least to me

Not One of Many - An Alfie Solomons/Beth Drake (OC) Story.

Because I’m so bloody excited to share this, here, have the prologue! Depending on how much I get written over the next few days, I could possibly be ready to begin posting next week, so watch this space! Story is set in AU for Alfie, modern day as well, so if you’re more of a period purist, you may want to give it a miss.

Prologue

“I invited you here as a courtesy, rather than emailing or choosing to call. You know that I usually enjoy including your work within the publication, such should go without saying, but I’m afraid this is sub-par compared to previous sterling standards, Beth. It lacks that witty vibrance which I normally see in your articles. The entire piece was mawkish, yet your descriptions were the furthest thing from visceral. You are not convincing me that you have any kind of eager or earnest interest in the subject, therefore you shall fail to rouse such in the reader.  

“It was all fluff, but I didn’t feel any kind of conviction behind your stance on the matter. I felt like you were attempting to convince yourself of your own choices relating to the subject matter, fool yourself, even. It was almost as if you were overcompensating because of regret. It came off as cloy. I’m sorry, but I am not going to include it in this issue.”

Sitting in a plush, beige chair in front of the desk of Madeline Arlington-Smith, editor-in-chief of the bi-monthly London Life and Style Magazine, Beth experienced the unpleasant sensation of her stomach turning over. Suddenly, she felt as if she were back in school, having her English homework critiqued by the equally formidable Mrs Davies, with her booming tones and a bright red pen for aggressively scribbled corrections. Madeline lacked the red pen, though.  

“I see. Could you at least give me some time so I might make a few alterations?” she asked tentatively, her confidence steamrollered by Madeline’s biting tone.

“No. The piece is beyond saving and we go to print in two days’ time. If you manage to produce something better, a piece worth reading within the next six weeks, though, send it my way. If, however, it is as dreadful as what you emailed to me yesterday morning, do not expect for me to leave the door open for your continued relationship with the magazine. I am not in the habit of publishing such saccharine bullshit.  

“You should go away now, lick your wounds, pull your head out of whichever cloud it has become lost within in even thinking that piece would be considered, and come back brighter to me. You are an incredibly talented journalist. Show that. Good evening, Beth.”

Nodding, she rose from her seat, Madeline’s words truly making her feel as if she’d just been mauled by a large, antagonised cobra. She now saw exactly why the famed and feared editor earned the nickname of the viper within the publishing world. Saccharine bullshit. Ouch.  

“I need a bloody drink.” she muttered, striding towards the elevator, her smart pencil dress and blazer now feeling somewhat stifling rather than comfortably hugging. Of course, dealing with her articles being rejected was something that Beth was long used to, working as a journalist, and a freelance one at that. It was, however, the first time she had faced the wrath of Madeline, an editor she usually had a very good rapport with. Not today, though.  

As the elevator descended, so further did her mood, replaying all of the remarks Madeline had made over her piece detailing the plight of women who chose to remain childless in the face of society’s demands and pressures that they put their wombs to the use nature intended. Beth took that personally, for at twenty-nine, she still preferred tending lovingly to her career rather than the idea of settling down to raise a family.  

“How could I be mawkish, yet unconvincing? Trying to convince myself, too?” Watching the lit-up circles of each floor tick down one by one on the panel, she chewed her cheek in frustration, cursing that she’d used her last piece of gum prior to her meeting. Clicking her heel repeatedly off the tiled elevator floor, she was a picture of wound-up frustration, those same Louboutin heels striking the polished marble of the foyer floor with aggressive little clacks as she strode upon it after the doors had opened with a silky glide, Beth exiting the building, glad of the fresh air hitting her face. Well, as fresh as it could be for London.

A drink. Such would of course be facilitated by a bar, but not spending an enormous amount of time in Chelsea, an area much too far out of her price range to frequent, it took her a few moments to navigate her way. Looking up the street through the rush hour traffic, she saw a large venue on the corner, deciding that Midland Bar would be her chosen venue to commence her tipping wine down her throat until her senses were suitably dulled.  

Upon arriving inside, though, she saw that perhaps Midland Bar was as much out of her price range as the rest of the area in which it was situated, Beth feeling most definitely like a fish out of water. True, her clothes might have been designer, taking into consideration the aforementioned Louboutin's on her feet and the Tom Ford dress she wore, but they were from two seasons’ past (also picked up from designer discount site HEWI) and put beneath a blazer from Topshop, teamed with an Osprey bag from TK Maxx. She almost always purchased designer pieces on a budget.  

“Cabernet Sauvignon, please,” she requested at the bar, the smiling girl with the immaculate ringlets nodding.

“Small or large, madam?”

“Bottle.” After having both her journalism insulted and her personal beliefs called into question, more than a mere singular glass was in order. She would regret such a decision when the price was displayed across the register, that particular bottle costing as much as she would usually spend on a nice, three course dinner. Tonight, wine would be her sustenance, it seemed. She had a full fridge at home, though, should she be feeling peckish later on.  

Looking around, she surveyed her surroundings while sipping her wine, which after the first mouthful she deduced was definitely worth the hefty price tag. Wandering over to the end of the bar, she looked at a framed picture of the establishment in days gone by, the photograph depicting how it had stood back in the 1940’s, when it had been the old Midland Bank. Her curiosity sated, she moved back to her place and continued to people watch.

The clientele were mostly business types, all Armani suits and Tag Heur watches, the smell of luxurious cologne and perfume filtering through the air as the patrons chatted about overseas business trips and brokering deals for eye watering sums of money, Beth drinking in the atmosphere as she sipped her wine and checked her phone.  

After wading through the usual slew of twenty percent off your next order emails and Instagram notifications, she placed it back and continued with her people watching, her eye caught by three women sitting at a table within the slightly elevated section, surrounded by luxury shopping bags.  

They were the very embodiment of the quintessential, glamorous London gal pals, all chatting and sipping what looked to be champagne (it was doubtful that Midland Bar stocked prosecco) their hands adorned with beautiful jewellery. The striking brunette wore the coveted Cartier panther ring, which Beth knew from checking online carried a price tag of thirty-six thousand pounds. It was a little gaudy for her tastes, but while browsing the site on a wistful ‘if I had the money, this is what I would purchase’ exercise, she had noticed the cost.

There they were, three wealthy women without a care in the world as they drank what was revealed to be Dom Perignon, when the redhead lifted the bottle from the ice bucket and topped up their glasses, and there she was, wondering how she would make next month’s rent after Madeline’s cruel evisceration of her most recent submission. Yes, the £67.95 bottle of wine was definitely not the most appropriately of timed purchases.

She would relish in every sip of her last extravagant expenditure until financial conditions improved, turning back to the bar and pouring out a second glass.  

“Pardon me, my darlin’,” she then heard from behind her, a hand placed gently to the small of her back as a man stepped past her, moving down the bar until he stopped in front of the girl who had served her. “Kerry, my little flower. How are ya?” he spoke warmly, outstretching his hand and wriggling his fingers in gesture for hers. She obliged, the handsome man in the deep blue, three-piece suit taking it and bestowing a kiss.  

“I’m good thanks, Alfie. How are you?” she smiled in reply, continuing to supervise the steady stream of Guinness into a pint glass.

“That’s what I like to hear! As for me, never better, treacle. Never better. The usual at my table when you’ve got a moment, love.” With a wink that would make the most glacial of women melt, he turned on his heel and strode across the bar, arriving at the table with the three women Beth had previously been quietly envying. The tall brunette rose from her seat to greet him, his hands sliding around her waist as he kissed her deeply, yet fleetingly, leaning down to the redhead, and greeting her much the same... and then the blonde as well.  

“Blimey, he’s either very friendly or very popular,” Beth muttered, just loud enough for her thoughts to be overheard.  

“I take it you’ve never been here before then, no?” Kerry the barmaid asked behind her as she filled an ice bucket, Beth a tad bashful to have been heard.  

“I haven’t, no. What’s the story there?” she asked, leaning back over her shoulder as she watched him sit down with the women.

Kerry continued with her scooping of ice, as entertained as ever by the reaction of someone who hadn’t a clue over the scene they’d just witnessed. “That’s Alfie Solomons, he owns this place as well as many others, and those women with him are his girlfriends.”  

“Girlfriends?” Beth inquired, putting extra emphasis on the pluralisation.

“Yep, he dates multiple women at once. Amira, the brunette, she’s his long stay, been with him for about three years. Talia, the redhead, around a year and Mimi, the blonde, about five months, or thereabouts. It’s hard to keep track.”

Beth raised her eyebrows, trailing the rim of her wine glass with her fingernail. “Nice work if you can get it.”  

Kerry laughed, dunking the bottle of Dom in amongst the ice before picking up a tumbler, adding a few cubes and siphoning in soda water. “Oh yeah. He's the talk of Chelsea, that man.” She filled the tray with three fresh flutes, placing the soda water and bucket atop it before excusing herself, heading over to the table in question.  

“The talk of Chelsea.” Beth mused, sipping her wine. Madeline might have disagreed at that very moment in time, but she knew a good article when one presented itself.

Okay so. Very long set of notes after having read all of Ra's and Talia's appearances from the first appearance (including Dr Darrk's prelude stuff) to Bride of the Demon. This was initially going to include all my notes but actually limiting this post so that it won't be super duper long.

(Talia, Bruce, League's means)

League's introduction to audience:

The League of Shadows is first introduced to the reader via deceased European shipping magnates, who are being killed off. The shipping magnates are later revealed to have been shipping weapons to a rebel force in south america. The writers never state what exact situation this was in or whether it was Darrk or Ra's who wanted them dead (This plotline happened when Darrk was temporarily president).

The reader is introduced to Talia before Ra's - Talia explains to Bruce that her dad and Darrk had a falling out. Then Ra's shows up to the Batcave later to reveal he knows Batman's secret identity. There are three ways to interpret this: Either Ra's is telling the truth and he deduced Batman's secret identity by investigating him from a far, or we take later Wolfman retcons and Ra's initially beefed with Bruce Wayne and only beefed with Batman after finding out Bruce is Batman, or the simplest explanation which is Talia just recognized him when he had his mask off and was lying when she said his face was too bruised.

Ra's' Characterization:

Ra's is introduced to the reader (in Batman 232) as someone who is considering retiring from his criminal organization and wants Batman to run it (later we see him mention he has few years left due to over-using the Lazarus Pit). Ra's also, in the first comic he appears in, sets up his motivation for the next many comics. There is no eco-rhetoric, IIRC that only comes in with Mike Barr much later. Instead, he says about the Himalayas "it is a beauty to which my soul responds... so stark, so pure... as untainted as my desert home! I am cursed with a love for emptiness... desolation!" (and later: "I have been called a criminal and a genius... and I am neither! I am an artist! I have a vision... of an earth as clean and pure as a snow-swept mountain... or the desert outside")

We later see more information added to Ra's' motives as he is introduced, written by Denny O'neil. He says (about why he preserves a nearly dead guy's brain): "because it contains knowledge useful to my organization! I long for a better world -- not one commanded by fools! This is my dream! Mister Sterling's information will aid me in realizing it!" This is very vague about what exactly he wants to do. Ra's says he wants to know what the guy was doing for the US gov, which was “planning diplomatic maneuvers for the war in southeast asia” - again no specifics given. Batman interprets this as Ra's wants to establish a criminal dictatorship, but it's unclear if that's supposed to be Ra's' actual motive (and Batman's right b/c Batman) or if Batman is reeling from how horrifying he found preserving the guy's brain.

Ra's refers to his motives as 'restoring harmony to our sad planet' in Batman 244, but again does not make it clear how he will do so or what is unbalancing the harmony

Ra's later shows no problem going to Batman for help (either by manipulating him or just asking him). He asks Batman for help in Batman 235 when a league technician steals something that is a plague carrier to stop the plague and to save Talia (who is going after the guy to avenge her father). For when he maniuplates batman: he stages a wedding between Talia and Batman to try to distract Batman from him (ra's) robbing the international gem market. He also manipulates Batman into getting involved in his war with the League of Assassins (at the time a different League). It is implied he slipped info to Sensei (leader of LoA) that made Sensei believe that Kathy Kane was his enemy, leading to her getting killed.

Talia as written by Denny O'neil is portrayed as genuinely head-over-heels with Batman, and Ra's is willing to use this. in the wedding issue, Ra's gives Bruce and Talia privacy after they get married, and its unclear if ra's genuinely thinks that talia and batman are gonna have sex after his marriage b/c he promises them privacy and chides lurk for trying to look inside the room. Ra's states he hoped to use talia to gain an edge on the batman or at least lessen his hunters instincts. Later on in this same plotline (DC Special series 15) Ra's refers to disobeying your father as an unpardonable offense and Talia possibly holds a gun on him to save Batman. However Ra's despite expressing disappointment every time Talia goes against him never really treats it as an unpardonable offense. In Son of the Demon (by Mike Barr), Ra's asks talia if she will betray him like she did last time, she says she hopes not do but will do as she must, as he will. Ra's says spoken like the flesh of my flesh.

Ra's often seems that he is keeping an eye on other's scientific advancements and ready to recruit the people or use their stuff. The reason he is interested in the gem market in the wedding issue is because vasco markewitch found a way to convert gems into pure energy. He is also intellectually thrilled by Hatter (not mad hatter, a scientist)'s invention that can turn whatever it touches into crystal. He also finds killing Blaine (a scientist who helped Batman previously against him) is not something he would do as 'rendering such an intellect useless is distasteful to him'. he seems to have intellectual appreciation for scientists. Ra's also does accept 'no' for an answer when scientists don't want to work for him when he is written by mike barr, which is later characterized differently by other writers IIRC.

Ra's at one point is chilling with the gotham rogues (when written by David Reed in Batman 291 he presides as the judge for their who killed Batman trial). Later on they seem like they don't care about him though. (Freeze says he never cared for Talia or her creepy old man)

When the world is in danger and Ra's is not the cause of it, Ra's often helps save the world. He helps Bruce stop Hatter from turning the world into a giant crystal ball in Brave and the Bold 159 and he is working with Bruce against Qayin who wants to start a nuclear war via a weather-controlling-satellite in Son of the Demon (however he is sad he has to destroy the weather-controlling-satellite)

Ra's' characterization changes significantly when Wolfman writes him in Batman 330-335. Wolfman recharacterizes Ra's to be mad at Bruce Wayne b/c Bruce's company bought some land that his Lazarus Pit was on, rather than him being impressed with Batman and wanting him to take over when he can't use the pits anymore. He wants Bruce's Wayne property and resources. he has a convoluted scheme where he works through various people in gotham to discredit bruce wayne to try to get his property.

Wolfman also writes Ra's as a very cruel man who has been conquering and enslaving people for a long time.

Ra's seems to get rich people to work for him in Wolfman's plot by promising to make them richer. he also offers batman to be his loyal follower and receive the world or to be his captive slave and live in hell. We later see him using his Lazarus Pit to get what people to do what he wants when written by Mike Barr - he restores Evelyne Grayce's youth and offers to restore Carmody's son back to life.

While under Wolfman we see Ra's' first portrayal as like. flat out evil and excessively cruel, it is Mike Barr who introduces the first Ra's as mass murderer plot. Ra's wants to kill everyone in Gotham (and did kill everyone in another small town) to make the world 'remade in his image' and so they have to do his will. It should be noted: in this plotline, the means he chose to try to commit mass murder (and possibly the motive to do so) seemed to be tied in to revelations he had after having been dissolved down to a single cell and reformed in the lazarus pit after Batman hit him into a lazarus pit in Batman 335.

Under Moench in Batman 400, Ra's does not disagree with Batman that he wants to rule the world. He says it will be a better world, sailing to a calmer course, a more perfect destiny and as the leader of the world he would put an end to chaos and violence

Despite Barr having introduced the first mass-murderer Ra's plotline he also writes Batman and Ra's pretty chill with each other in Son of the Demon and Batman seems to respect Ra's (and expresses that he hopes the only thing they will be enemies in is chess). However Ra's re-iterates that his goal is still to purify the earth and he will not tolerate interference.

Overall, Wolfman's characterization seems aberrant in the writers thus far. I can see how Barr got his Ra's characterization from O'neil, especially if O'neil intended Batman to be right when Batman made assumptions about Ra's' motives. O'neil's Ra's' motives were pretty vague when they didn't involve trolling Batman, but Barr's Ra's' motives are specific, and that is when we get specific ecological concerns brought up.

Ra's is portrayed as someone who loves Talia but is still fine using her for his own ends, but he uses her more extremely under Wolfman than under O'neil, since under O'neil it was a distraction that she was obviously OK with doing. He does seem to forgive her when she betrays him and helps Batman/the world, but she's also very periphery to what he wants. She seems to be less of a periphery character when written by Mike Barr. We also see in a later post (Talia's post) that she does feel compelled to prove her loyalty to her father.

Bla bla bla with Bla(ze)

I have these things on my mind and dont know what to do then make a post of my thoughs.

So… all things is about Yu.sei.

What If Yu.sei heard me during our relationship saying Im not interested in his autograph for his fame, I only ever want it for three reasons. The contract of our house, certificate of marriage and certificate of our kids. Thats all.

And now I wonder how he would react…

Another thing that hadnt left my mind is whenever Yusei wakes up from a nightmare he makes himself warmth milk to get back to sleep. Its a comfort thing Mar.tha always did when he had nightmares as a kid and went to her with tears streaming down his cheeks.

One time I got out of bed and catched him doing this and asked if he was okay. He didnt answer as he kept sterling the spoon. Walking up to him as I hugged him from behind and snuggled him, whispering to him “Whatever it is, I am here for you. I will not leave your side, only if you want me to. I love you. I love you so much.”

Minutes passed till I let him go, he grabbed my hand. “Stay.” He handed me a cup too as we sitted down and drunk in silence as I holded his free hand the whole time.

Another thing I thought some night was…

What if I looked up the ceiling of our home and thought how Yu.sei would react if I di.ed. Would he miss me? Would he cry? As I turned over to see him sleep peacefully next to me, my heart sunk. Looked at him. Why would I bring something like this up to my mind? This sweet boy lost his own parents, some friends… As I stroked his hair softly I got out of bed and made my way to the kitchen.

Drinking some water as I though why I kept doing this comparing thoughts and end up thinking Im not enough for him and he will seek for someone else. Hearing footsteps coming closer as I saw Yu.sei bringing a bottle of water out the frigde.

“You okay?”

“Hm.”

I made my way back to bed as I stared at the nightstand till I heard him coming to our room as I closed my eyes quick. I feel him coming closer as I peaked through the lits of my eyes to see him kneeling in front of me as he laid his hand on my head and stroked my hair.

“I know you too well that you wanted another answer, but I really mean what I say. I dont want you gone. You mean everything to me. I cant put into words how much I care for you.”

I sighed as I opened my eyes fully, looking up to him. “But why cant you say that while looking in my eyes?”

“Cause I’m afraid when I say it directly to you, you will be gone too like everyone else who I have loved or loved me.”

Unsung Heroes

I love this idea @mostlymaudlin, thank you so much for tagging me! I tried to focus on fics that had less than 200 kudos, with the exception of one that I'm including as a BONUS (and I'll explain why when the time comes).

A Man of Letters, or Five Times Baz Retreats, and the One Time He Doesn't: By @palimpsessed

Summary: After the war with Napoleon, all Simon wants is peace and quiet in the country with his friend Penny, but night terrors and panic attacks weren't the only surprises awaiting him back home. Dowager Lady Salisbury saw news of Simon's exploits abroad and arrived on his doorstep with the shocking revelation that he was her grandson. At his grandmother's insistence, Simon accompanied his newfound family to London, overwrought by excitement at the chance to finally belong, and anxiety from the struggle to fit his new role. Baz is heir to two very wealthy and well-respected families in England, but that hasn't stopped tongues from wagging. Baz has always been more interested in fashion and philosophy than in helping his father run the estate, and he refuses to settle down. Despite his recent sterling showing at Oxford, Baz's father has begun to lose all patience with his recalcitrant son. Matters went from bad to worse when Baz's fiancé threw him over only days after their engagement became public, rekindling rumours the family hoped to quash. Against his father's wishes, Baz has trooped off to London for another season with his friends, but the looming death knell of his good name has soured his last act of rebellion.

I love this fic for so many reasons, including that it was a COTTA fic, and that I love anything that Pal writes. But also the fact that it was SO CLEVERLY written! It's told through a series of letters either by Simon or by Baz, and the last chapter is just... SIIIIIIGH. I don't want to spoil too much because it is SO worth the read. :D

Just like Everybody Else Does: By DefinitelyYou (not on tumblr as far as I know)

Summary: It’s not the most embarrassing situation I’ve ever found myself in, but it’s still well embarrassing. Might even be in my top five, up there with the time I spelled my shirt and trousers off in Ms. Possibelf’s class, leaving me only in my pants, socks, and trainers. I’m not nearly as starkers this time around, but I still feel naked, emotionally speaking. I’m standing in the middle of the clearing in the Wavering Wood on a makeshift dance floor surrounded by magicked fairy lights while possibly the most depressing song I’ve ever heard rings through the clearing. I’ve been deserted by both my girlfriend and my nemesis, and everyone is watching my next move.

This author is BRILLIANT! And I know most people are more familiar with their other fic, How Shall I Love Thee When You are Gone? (With good reason, that fic is amazing). However, I found that this fic doesn't get nearly as much love as it should. I remember clicking on it because I love that song, and then being completely struck down with the angst and pining. Highly, highly recommend this fic.

The Window of Opportunity Series: By basiltonjeans (not on tumblr as far as I know)

Summary: Simon Snow meets Baz Pitch when he's eight years old, and they become the best of friends. With every year that passes, their friendship becomes more and more complicated. When Simon is eleven, he loses Baz, and is forced to pick up the pieces and move on. When Simon is old enough to truly get a grasp on the situation, he realises it's been love all along. He just hopes it's not too late. or; every year, something in Simon's life has changed. One thing always remains consistent: Baz.

This SERIES! You guys! This is one of my absolute all time favourite series. I read it a few years ago, when I just joined the fandom, and I remember when they posted the final two fics. I know, it's technically cheating because it isn't one fic, but 4, but I am telling you, these fics are wonderful. It has childhood friends to enemies to missed opportunities, to reconnection... Just a bucketful of warmth.

Summary: “What’s her name?” “Whomst?” He’s been drinking. Of course. “The girl who suddenly started appearing in your Instagram posts a few weeks ago,” I say. So I know I said I would stick to fics under 200 kudos, and this fic beats that amount (also I thought I had bookmarked this fic, turns out I DIDN'T), but THIS FIC NEEDS MORE LOVE! Naturally I love everything that FIRB writes (and they know this), but this fic opened up the world of DeNiall for me. I never really saw them together until I read this fic. FIRB is so good with words and writing complex emotions.

Dear Sterlings,

I honestly don't know why I said that haha, because there really hasn't been any interaction on my acc at all, but it's all good. I am writing this blog because there is someone who really inspired me to start writing, someone in my family who felt too relatable, hearing her teenage obsession with romance books and her fantasies. So here it goes.

So...I think I've already written my "introductory post" so won't say much on that here, but what I truly wanna admit is that I really! REALLY! wish to be consistent here, on Tumblr, with my blogs. There goes a lot in my mind and writing a diary seems boring (sorry to all who do Hehe) and I thought it'd be nice to have like-minded people reading these. I want to start off by saying that there is a card in the Modern Witch Tarot Deck by Lisa Sterle that has a card in it that says, "you are a badass being full of life, love and possibilities. Through this deck, may you find a path to your best self." Always a nice reminder but I think this also speaks to who you are as a person and that is a big part of why your future husband loves you so much. I hear, "wow, my girl is so badass" The thing that will may your future husband want to marry you is your adventurous spirit and your charming, warm light. He loves the fact that he feels like you two are a team, a unit. When you ebb, he flows and vice versa. When it comes to arguments, I think that it will be more like discussions for the most part and there is constant communication where no one is being picky with each other. He also going to love how you are nothing like he as ever experienced before. Most importantly, he's going to love you because you are you. Your souls have been together long before you two even got to this earth. This is a love that is mature and dates back centuries. He has loved you for so long and he isn't going to stop. My football correspondent has produced his customary masterpiece of journalism. His appreciation of United playing well for once is palpable, and very good to see.

He makes a different point to me about us being only 3 points behind city. He is 100% correct of course, and will probably finish many more than 3 points behind. My comment is just a little tongue in cheek, but I do think that some of the doom mongers should take it to heart. If they think of how we performed in season 1973/74 they will have a much clearer idea of what “poor play” and “crisis” REALLY means.

My own feeling about the performance is this:

“Rushford and Martial were dropped to the bench. Neither were missed, and from what I have read - and seen on the highlights - the team were much more dynamic without them. I would be very happy if neither of them, together with their mate Sancho ever played for the club again. In my opinion, Pogba and Lingard were the spreaders of a laziness and bad attitude virus that has eaten away at the team - and cost the jobs of Mourinho, Solskjaer and Rangnick - they are gone now, so if we can also get rid of these three bone idle wasters, then I can see the team going places again”.

hi - this match used to be one of most anticipated games of the season between the 2 best teams guided by the 2 best managers - nowadays it is a battle between 2 okish sides who have spent a lot of cash without having much to show for it

that said i am pleased to report that this encounter turned out to be one of the most entertaining matches that old trafford has seen in quite a while with both teams deciding that the best form of defence was to attack - in the end united proved themselves better in both departments and deserved to win

after the lifeless non effort at newcastle the reds were bright, breezy, energetic and full of attacking intent - after 9 minutes united won a corner - fernandes was about to take it when the ref was called to look at the tv screen - nobody knew why as there had been no appeals - anyway it turned out that antony's foot had been trodden on by enzo fernandes - probably an accident but the ref pointed to the spot - bruno stepped up but his attempt lacked power and direction and was easily saved

undaunted united continued to press forward (in part helped by chelseas defenders passing the ball amongst themselves in their own area) and following a set piece garnacho pulled the ball back for maguire whose shot was parried out to mctominay who fired a left foot shot in for the opener

a short time later mctominay was allowed a free header from 6 yards -the first effort was straight at keeper sanchez and from the rebound mctominay again hit it straight at the keeper who gratefully dived on the ball

in the meantime chelsea tested united - mudryk hit the outside of the post and dragged a shot wide - sterling set up jackson in front of goal but onana came out to smother - just before half time the silky smooth palmer teased the united defence before eventually drilling a low shot beyond onana for the leveller

united maintained their drive in the 2nd half and after 69 minutes mctominay was found free at the far post by garnacho and the scots header made it 2 - 1 - as usual the celebrations were paused by a VAR check but resumed a minute or so later - shortly afterwards chelsea presented mctominay with an open net but the shot was screwed wide - i kid you not the man could easily had a hat trick and maybe even 4

as the end neared chelsea strove for a point - the ball flashed across the united goalmouth without a meaningful touch - a late header hit the outside of the post - but united deservedly hung on - they'd had 28 shots in total and were the dominant force

so united after 15 matches have 27 points - they've already lost 6 but because like test cricket they don't do draws anymore they are not far away from the top 4 - indeed if city are the barometer of succcess united must be doing alright because they are just 3 points behind last years treble winners - lies, damned lies and statistics

next up is bournemouth who are playing pretty well - which united will turn up ?- hopefully the one that played tonight and away in the champions league - we don't want a repeat of newcastle - by the way it is liverpool away soon - something to look forward to - not 7 again we hope

Queering the Packards?: The importance of documenting LGBTQ ancestors

A quote from Victor Salvo, Founder and Executive Director of the Legacy Project on QueerBio. Image from Chicago LGBT Hall of Fame. What he says applies to genealogy as much as mainstream histories like biographies.

When I started my research, I tended to follow the usual path of focusing on male progenitors and their wives, including English immigrants like Samuel Packard who landed in what became Massachusetts after Indigenous people relinquished the land, often by force. In January 2021, I speculated that a friend of Carrie Chapman Catt, a suffragist in a relationship with Mary Garrett Hay (and later with Alda Wilson), could have been attracted to Alaska "Al" Packard (1868-1934), the first female FBI agent and my sixth cousin three time removed, while Al had a close friendship with Harriet Taylor Upton. Many months later, in October 2021, I included question from Christine E. Sleeter in an article I quoted from: "How might a family historian tease out clues of LGBTQ family members in the past?" Late last year, I noted my ancestor (fifth cousin four times removed), Elizabeth Dwight Packard (1859-1915), who was living with another woman, Lucy Huston Sturdevant (1860-1940), who also served as the executrix of Elizabeth's estate after Elizabeth's death. This year, I surmised that since my sixth cousin three times removed, Elizabeth Packard (1912-1985) was listed as single in the 1930, 1940, and 1950, and the fact she was near queer neighborhoods, it may indicate that Elizabeth is queer herself as I surmised. I would love to do a deeper dive into her life, as there is a gap of information from 1950 to 1985. Last but not least is my post last month, with a major focus on the relationship between my fifth cousin five times removed, Sophia Brett Packard (1824-1891) and Harriet Elizabeth "Hattie" Giles (1828-1909), who are known most prominently for founding Spelman Seminary in Georgia, which is known today as Spelman College.

I am convinced that I have more than five queer ancestors within my family tree. In fact, I have a draft post about my fourth cousin five times removed, Frances Appleton Packard (1836-1902) who was always listed as single and never noted as marrying anyone, which can be a clue that the person is a queer individual, [1] to use the word in a non-pejorative way. After all, there are over 4,000 ancestors on the two family trees I've created on Ancestry, one for my mom's side and another for my dad's side so I don't confuse myself with which ancestors are which. I already know the stories about my great-granduncle Stanley Sterling Mills (1901-1934) being gay and my grandaunt on my dad's side, Ellen, who had a partner who lived with her for many years named Fran.

There are many posts out there about LGBTQ ancestors. Some recommend genealogists check occupations, examine family patterns, read newspapers, examine prison and court records, search cemeteries, look for terms like "cross dresser, Sapphist, sodomite, tribad, or Uranian", and keep in mind that ancestors weren't "as free to live their lives openly like LGBTQ+ people can today". Others suggest looking for personal accounts, wills, criminal records, census records, examining local history, asking questions if records don't exist for a specific person, and recognizing that official records can "subtly divulge clues", Beyond this, were a pamphlet about LGBTQ history in the U.S. published by the National Park Service, Thomas MacEntee's 10-page piece about why stories of LGBTQ relatives are important, the Queer Ancestors Project in San Francisco, and other discussions online about this topic. [2]

Current genealogical software is not inclusive of transgender individuals and some LGBTQ relationships, as some have pointed out. As for other Packards, some have published books that fall into Queer Studies, although I'm not sure of their relation. [3] More broadly, there are the collections of the Lesbian Herstory Archives (lampooned in the film Watermelon Woman), the South Asian American Digital Archive, the GLBT Historical Society, and Library of Congress, along with important sites like Out History which focuses on LGBTQ history. In addition, there is a guide put together by Fordham University Libraries, the Dickinson College LGBT History Project (documents LGBTQ life in central Pennsylvania), the archival collections at ONE Archives at USC Libraries, the LGBTQ Iowa Archives and Library, the LGBT Legacy Project, the collaborative project known as Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, and Queer Archive at University of North Texas, the archive collection of LGBT Community Center in New York, and the digital collections of The ArQuives, Canada's LGBTQ archives institution.

This is only scratching the surface. [4] As the National Museum of American History puts it, "LGBTQ+ history is a part of American history...since its founding, both knowingly and unknowingly." After all, pressure from genealogists caused FamilySearch to allow same-sex family trees. I agree with those who say that while our ancestors may have kept their identities and orientations secret, they likely left clues, and it’s time to "stop pruning their branches of our family trees". There need to be new ways of visualizing information to accommodate families that aren't heteronormative (i.e. married man and woman having children) or re-imagining family trees altogether. This is coupled with telling stories which don't fall into usual patterns which are easily shown in existing genealogy software which is strongly heteronormative. It can counteract the intentional hidden nature of "lives, stories, and histories of LGBTQ people...by socially dominant individuals and groups" through various means over the years. [5]

Additionally, the word "transgendered" is offensive to trans people and unnecessarily confusing." Also of note is "Northampton LGBT ancestor Anna de Naucaze’s story intrigues, inspires" in The Rainbow Times. There's also the inane question (and discussion) posed on /r/Genealogy in January 2018 about the ethics of documenting a deceased ancestor as LGBT, with people responding that you need "some incontrovertible proof" to say someone is gay, emphasizing "documented evidence", explain reasoning and document conclusions, and saying it would be a "touching tribute". The worst were those who sneered they don't document anyone's sexual preference (why?) and arguing that it should be kept secret if the deceased person wanted something secret (a pretty absolutist view).

[3] This includes Queer cowboys : and other erotic male friendships in nineteenth-century American literature by Chris Packard (more about him here) and Women / men = Femmes / hombres : erotic poetry with William Packard as an author as noted in this search, here, and on his Wikipedia page.There may even be Packards within the Digital Transgender Archive, although I haven't looked at the results in depth yet.
