Remember kids! The whole sequence of The Phantom Menace where Qui-Gon attempts to free two (2) slaves and only succeeds at freeing one (1) is clearly meant to convey that freeing slaves is something the Jedi can just will to happen, and that the very existence of slavery in the Star Wars galaxy is because the Jedi just don’t feel like helping. If you disagree with this statement in any way, you are either stupid or actually support slavery! :)
I’m sorry, is my sarcasm too thick? Are you tripping over it? Ah yeah, I forgot that’s not possible because this is an actual argument people make.

southern gothic crimson peak. that’s it.
The thing about Southern Gothic is that, if you do it with any kind of conscientiousness, you’re going to run into slavery. sooner or later. Having grown up in the south, I can attest that if there’s a big gorgeous house from anytime before the Civil War, the original owners almost certainly enslaved people there. And while that can be a fascinating thematic throughline for deep literary southern Gothic – it’s certainly a horrible family history – it’s not as good for Fun Gothic With BlorbosTM.
(slavery also happened in the northern US, to be clear. For fiction purposes, though, you can go further back in history without encountering it than you can in the south.)
Like. If there’s a big old crumbling house in the south, even if it’s a modern story, there’s a 99% chance that the looming specter of slavery is going to overshadow the characters’ interpersonal interactions. And this is one story where I prefer focusing on the interpersonal interactions
I guess you could have Allerdale built after the war if it’s a modern version? So then you don’t feel as bad focusing on smushing the characters together like dolls while whispering “now kiss?”

I actually will never forgive whoever adapted the story of vinland saga s2 for adding in the Tragic Ketil Backstory.  like, some assholes were gonna sympathize with him anyway, but those flashbacks just give them more fodder to argue that the scene where he beats arnheid is “about being betrayed by the one you trusted most”.  this is a man whose outward show of kindness was so fragile that it shattered IMMEDIATELY under the threat of Losing All His Stuff; he considers her as His Stuff, and her attempt to escape as thievery.  he literally says this.  the bullshit about betrayed love and trust is just window dressing.

A city councillor in Pickering is calling herself a “modern-day slave” after council voted to dock her pay for 30 days following an investigation by the city’s integrity commissioner.
Coun. Lisa Robinson made the comment in a post on Facebook on Tuesday.
Robinson’s remarks followed a ruling by the integrity commissioner which found that her decision to identify three citizens by name in a Facebook post in which she announced that her annual Halloween event for charity would be cancelled amounted to a “bully tactic” which showed “blatant disregard for the wellbeing of others.”
Council voted to have me work for free for the next 30 days for a ‘sarcastic remark’ on my personal FB post. I am now a modern day slave,” Robinson said in the Tuesday post.
Full article
Someone needs to explain to this white girl that having a month's pay docked for encouraging harassment of citizens she represents as a city councillor is not the same as fucking slavery.
Also there already is modern-day slavery in Canada, Lisa, and it's the prison system. Slavery is not you losing 30 days' pay for being an asshole.

He talked about you. Your father. I would overhear. He was always so loud when he was drunk. Remember? Loud.
"The boy is the most impressive pupil in his whole academy." "The boy speaks many languages and can fight with a sword."
At first, I did not believe these tales. Not my son, not the unruly child who could not sit still for even a moment. And then I heard tales of your music.
"He plays the violin." "He composes." "He plays songs for the finest people in Paris."
I said, ah. Well, that is my son. My son was born with music in his heart, just like his mother.
I missed you. So much. When he took you from me, I...

Antis in the same fandom: "why are people shipping this black character with a white character, this is a blatant power imbalance and totally exactly the same as chattel slavery, I can't believe these gross racist fucks"

I feel like these two libertarians compete with each other to post some of the dumbest memes in existence. And I'm pretty sure the only reason they keep getting shoved in my feed is because Elon follows them.
I remember when opposition research took effort. Now everything just comes directly to me and I think I prefer the effort.
Like, neither of them are smart enough to know how stupid their ideology actually is. But even by libertarian standards, these are some of the smoothest brains in the entire collective.
I don't understand how no one pulls them aside at the meetings and is all, "Maybe memes aren't your thing. You're kinda making us all look like idiots. Maybe just post some Ayn Rand quotes and call it a day."
Not that I have to explain it, but...
Workers share losses by not being workers anymore.
No one thinks insulin is free. We are suggesting that tax money be allocated so it is free at point of service. Perhaps by taxing the wealthy or not manufacturing tanks we don't use.
We use tax money for social good all the time. Insulin is such a weird place for folks to draw the line. Like...
Firetrucks. Yes. Roads. Yes. Public schools. Yes. Life-saving medication... well that is just too far.
And the free cotton thing does not make any sense. How is a capitalist slave owner... nope, not worth trying to figure out.

Is it inconvenient that one of your story’s comedic heroes is based on a person who owned humans for personal gain? Yes! Does that mean you should ignore it? No! Why soften the depiction of [Stede Bonnet] who, as Wikipedia notes, previously served as a major in the Barbados militia, a rank that “was probably due to his land holdings, since deterring slave revolts was an important function of the militia.” You’d think his crew, especially as depicted here, would have an opinion or two about some of this back story, which they’d no doubt infer from his station and bearing. This is a narrative conundrum only in the sense that “Our Flag Means Death” has crafted Bonnet as someone you’re meant to root for. He’s gentle-hearted and squeamish about violence, but apparently only when pirating. This is a specific choice and it’s disappointing that Jenkins and his collaborators (including Waititi as an executive producer) didn’t challenge themselves to make a different one.
(warning for embedded and transcribed tweets with transmisogynistic and transphobic rhetoric)
i'm really just gonna start blocking anyone i see posting wwdits or ofmd

The musical 1776 is one of those musicals you have to beg people on your knees to watch because everyone thinks it's gonna be propagandist bullshit and you have to desperately convince them it's actually incredibly insightful (especially for its time) and (unlike the other musicalTM) actually acknowledges quite starkly how deeply ingrained slavery was within the lives of the founding fathers, not just in the southern colonies but also in the northern ones.

was just at a work presentation about the history of slavery in New England. in person. room full of adult museum professionals
and the presenter (who was a very well-spoken and accomplished researcher my age or a little younger, and whom I otherwise came away with great respect for). mentioned enslaved people "unaliving" themselves/their families to escape slavery
the brainrot is spreading

I’ve enjoyed vinland saga season 2′s additions for the most part but the Ketil Backstory TM I’m less enthusiastic about, manga/s2 spoilers below the cut
BECAUSE LIKE, the reason his brutal treatment of arnheid works isn’t because there’s some sad history of lost love to back it up.  it’s because all this time, we’ve seen him act like...quite a decent guy, right?  he gives thorfinn and einar the chance to earn their freedom, and he’s Nice to arnheid, even if he’s not willing to let her go.
he’s Nice...so long as arnheid is a quiet, biddable, convenient mistress who says all the right things.  she was the one who always validated his “softness” (in the eyes of society).  she’s just fighting to survive by any means necessary, but he takes it all at face value.
so then, when he finds out she’s tried to run away, on top of the prospect of losing his land and his wealth...it shatters his image of her as someone who ~loves~ him.  in his mind, when she behaves like a “person” rather than a “slave”, it negates the validation she’s given him for the kindness he’s shown in the past.  and that’s why he beats her.
it’s a grim fucking reminder that even though the farm arc is relatively humane, even though thorfinn and einar have been given a chance to become free men, the problem isn’t the treatment, it’s the ownership of people.  it’s the fact that he could’ve been hurting her like this all along and that would have been socially acceptable, and the fact that he did use her under those conditions--emotionally and physically--is still reprehensible.  arnheid goes along to get along, and it’s one of the few places she has agency, but even so she could not meaningfully consent under those conditions.
anyway, idk that they’re using the backstory to make him more sympathetic exactly, but I also don’t think it was necessary to motivate what happens, and I think it muddies the waters on what the moment is critiquing.  it makes it more about ketil’s feelings than //gestures ALL THAT, and I think it’s the wrong move

Rex/Ventress for that ship meme!
Put a ship in my ask and I will tell you a bit about how each of the following scenarios would go down for them:
Fake dating I think the best way for this to go down is that the two of them run into each other while on unrelated undercover missions at the same event. They are very Not Subtle about noticing and recognizing each other, and people can tell, and they stumble their way into claiming they're a couple when trying to explain. They have to run with it, which involves getting in each others' way a lot because their respective missions aren't actually compatible.
Bodyswap A primary conflict here would be "Ventress no longer has access to the Force, and thus feels as though she's lost an entire sense, and is kind of freaking out about it" and "Rex now has the Force, and is wearing a body that is addicted to the dark side, and he has precisely zero experience in controlling it." They're stuck trying to find/relocate the other person in order to switch back, and the whole situation is Not Helped by the Force situation.
Sexpollen/fuck or die/aliens made them do it Eeeeeeeeh classic plot format, captured by Zygerrian Slavers who want them To Breed to see if they can get some Strong And Durable babies out of these new holdings.
Dark!fic [buries face in hands] Ventress (threatens to) torture Rex for information. He's unwillingly and unreasonably into it. Things spiral, and it gets worse before it gets better.
Secret kinks I think Ventress wants Rex to tie her up. I have malleable headcanons as far as kink goes for most characters, including Ventress, but with Rex, I think she's a bondage bottom.
Their first kiss Definitely a rough and bloody and "covered in ash and dirt" mid-battle sort of thing.
Meeting the parents [stares at keyboard] I think the closest thing either of them has left to a parent is Dooku? Jango and Ky are dead, and Ventress doesn't know really know her bio mom or Talzin, so uh. I guess. I guess Rex has to beg Obi-Wan for lessons on The Right Spoons For The Eight Course Meal so he can go meet Ventress's grump grandpa in a setting that isn't attempted murder.
Moving in together I am not convinced either of them knows how to go about finding an apartment. They've both lived either With An Adult or In Military Housing for most of their lives. I mean, Ventress probably did something between leaving Ratattak and finding Dooku, but I doubt it was legally signing a lease, you know? I think they move into a wing of Dooku's castle for about five weeks before they're looking for a way out and move to Coruscant or something and just temporarily end up in a Jedi Temple apartment while searching for housing because living with Dooku is suffocating, even with an entire castle to avoid each other in.
A crossover of my choice Okay I know this is a little stupid but please imagine them dressed up as MCU Hawkeye and Black Widow thank you
An au of my choice Some kind of fairy tale AU where Rex is a brave knight in shining armor and Ventress is the Intimidating Witch that he needs to confront and defeat in order to Gain A Useful Object for whatever fairy tale plot he's following, but he somehow ends up dating the witch by the end? She's not a good witch yet, but she's not attempting murder, so it's fine.

Okay, so everyone talks about how it's out of character for Anders to approve when Hawke essentially sells Fenris back to Danarius. But I don't think we talk enough about how every companion is out of character in that scene.
Isabela and Varric react with disgust (Varric's expressed via sarcasm), as if Hawke is being very rude and not LITERALLY SELLING THEIR CLOSE FRIEND. Considering a part of Isabela’s backstory is nearly dying to free a group of slaves, and Fenris could literally be her boyfriend at this stage in the game, it's astonishing to me that you don't lose her as a companion altogether over this.
Aveline just says "unbelievable" as if Hawke isn't breaking a major law in her full view. She says more critical things about Hawke's mercenary work than she does him literally selling a person. Even if you're not a fan of Aveline, this is demonstrably the type of thing she'd throw hands over.
Anders, as previously discussed in a thousand other posts would not react like this. Even if you're an Anders hater, you have to acknowledge that this is a situation where Justice would become involved. This has been discussed to death, but as much conflict as he and Fenris have, this is a level of betrayal and underhandedness that's not demonstrated anywhere else.
Merrill and Sebastian react somewhat like you'd expect. Merrill is extremely distressed and upset, she literally shouts "No!" But tbh, knowing her character and the way that she has been entirely comfortable going against the grain in the past, it's remarkable she doesn't actually step in. Perhaps if you play a REALLY aggressive Hawke who bullies Merrill, I could understand this being the extent of her reaction. But with any other characterization, her objection is so much less than what you'd expect of her.
Same for Sebastian. He says "We can't abandon our friend in his hour of need," and then proceeds to do literally nothing while a close friend of his is betrayed and sold. Sebastian is NOT the kind of guy who would just stand there and watch while this happens in front of him. He and Fenris are close, and unless you're romancing him, he has very little reason to stay with the Kirkwall Crew if Fenris is gone and the group doesn't represent his values.
I think Bioware wanted to have this option in the game for whatever reason, but they didn't realize they had written characters for whom this was a major deal breaker. They wrote scenes with the same moral gravitas as the ones from Origins, but they refused to give you scenes of confrontation with those you'd hurt, or give companions a trigger to leave your party if your choices were too abhorrent to them.
The scene sucks. It's not that Anders is written out of character (which he is). It's that everyone but Fenris and Hawke HAVE to act out of character in order to maintain the game's balance and keep characters in your party when they should be leaving it. As a result, you get a scene where you can sell Bela's boyfriend and Sebastian's best friend into slavery and they still come to your parties and never say anything about it again.
