Possibly a mix of both. I think he was probably aware he scared Greta at this point with his killing of Cole, (I think his name was that, the abusive ex) but may have been misguided in the sense that…

The way she reacted with fear was probably also because she just realised an unknown man was living in the walls. While we consider Brahms a slasher I don’t see him as someone who kills a lot, so maybe it was him trying to appeal to her by telling her he wouldn’t do that anymore? I also subscribe to the idea that the crying noise + water dripping scene was when he got that letter from his parents, so really yeah I think it was also lot just him not wanting someone else to leave him at all costs.

At the end of rough night is Beth still trying to keep her relationship on the dl to the general public? Like obviously they’re fully committed to each other and all the personal people in both their lives knows what’s up and they don’t try to hide anything but what about everyone else? Does Rio come into her office and see her at work? If Beth held another police fundraiser would Rio attend? I would think not because they wouldn’t want to be publicly connected to each other in order to continue getting away with all their illegal doings but maybe at this point it doesn’t really matter?

I was really back and forth on this as I was writing Rough Night specifically for that last reason you mentioned – that Beth was the face and Rio was the execution. And also because an overcorrection of their impasses about their differences felt inauthentic to Beth’s character. She would have to come a long way to have the epiphanies she’d need to have to truly see Rio and his experiences in society. But I decided that for Brio to legitimately be a level-playing-field couple, they have to have equal risk and equal access. Rio can’t continue to be the only one getting his hands dirty and then stepping back into the shadows so Beth can shine publicly. Their social inequality and Beth’s inability to acknowledge it was always a problem for them, and I decided the only way for a relationship to work between them is for her to begin to legitimize him socially and stop pretending like she can’t be seen with the likes of him when she herself is no better. It’s the bare minimum she can do to show respect to who he is. She can’t love him and also hide him like some sort of dirty secret.

Dean was arrested. He even pled guilty! Had they not divorced, would Councilwoman Boland not be seen with him because he was suspected for crimes that were never proven? Of course not. She even put him in her campaign photo, while he was still wearing his ankle monitor. So why would she not be able to have a legitimate public relationship with Rio who hasn’t been convicted of anything? We all know why. It’s because we’re all acutely aware that a man like Rio and a man like Dean don’t carry equal social standing. So I decided that Beth would slowly begin to work Rio into a public story of perseverance, social stigmas, and law enforcement prejudices as part of her platform as she expands her political career and reach.

Rio making a fundraiser donation in his own legal name in chapter 47 was intended to be worked into a future spin Beth could use of Rio’s social legitimacy. His donation shows active support of law enforcement. He is a local small business owner even in canon. In Rough Night he actively sponsors youth programs and opportunities for social betterment that Beth herself participates in. That story angle was all groundwork that I intended to expand on for Brio becoming a socially legitimate couple who work together in all aspects of their business. There would no longer be the “public face” and “nefarious execution,” as Rio had with Nick. Rio resented Nick for their dynamic and would have grown to resent Beth had I kept them in that disproportionate relationship. They are equally culpable for their crimes and equally socially legitimate for their contributions. Beth has the social standing and platform to make this happen and Rio deserves for her to do it. Beth needs to start saying some things out loud and acknowledging her own complicity in creating this type of social construct.

I had a passive mention of this in Crystalline, my dreamy little follow-up to Rough Night. In chapter 1, Beth gives a speech about prevailing prejudices in the local justice system and specifically mentions Rio as a victim of that system. This speech is set in a silly trope of Rio throwing her off kilter by coming to see her speak, and then bookended by a sex scene in her office. But that whole scenario was intended as a change for Beth professionally. A modification to her political platform and the beginnings of legitimizing her relationship with Rio to the public. Not only that, but Rio felt connected enough to her message that he attended the event in person to watch her delivery, which I hope speaks to his changing outlook on who he himself is as a member of society. Rio spent his adult life moving in shadow while Nick got to live his life openly. And if Rio is going to be with Beth, I wanted him to have everything – his passions, his skill, AND the soft domestic parts of life he always felt weren’t made for him. (Which included Rio’s changing accountability to how he behaves as a parent.) This was the only way I could think of to do a “happily ever after” for them. Beth needed to see her privilege, and Rio needed to acknowledge that he is deserving of his own humanity.

Did you finish Yumi's cells? How do you feel about the ending?

I feel happy.

It's an happy ending for our lead.

I saw her growing in this final episode and I adored that the show ends on her and her cells, welcoming the return of Love in the village.

She is our hero after all.

I appreciated the sort of open final for the question who she will end up with? it was cheeky, but possibly the only finale that truly symbolise the whole 2 seasons arc. The point wasn't finding a male lead. The point was Yumi, being happy. And she is grateful to those who helped her becoming the accomplished, happy Yumi she is now: Babi and Wung. And an open door to the future.

I got very emotional with Yumi at the window surrounded by her cells. I am weak whenever characters have this moments of self awareness, almost like a self cuddle. And she spent Christmas surrounded by loving and adoring friends - when Yumi in S1 barely went out with anyone.

I am a terrible creature to be around when I don't like a finale, and I am so glad I liked this one or you would have felt MY RAGE.

Also, in Babi's fan club's headquarters here, we are very glad he wasn't vilified. Or that he didn't end up with the intern when he said he got a girlfriend. Babi's ending was very noble, as he is. And the whole village took time in the last episode to recognise the vital role Babi's support had in her brand new life. We all knew they were not endgame, but the way it ended is possibly the best outcome. It was heartbreaking, but they are still special in each other's life - and they recognise that. The way it ends, truly creates three different what if universe, and in one Babi will surely menage to reconquer Yumi's love cells. Who knows. I wish him happiness.

it does! Gaz being a crow-variant harpy means he has a much better long term memory than say, an osprey-variant. In the same way, Gaz doesn't have the same benefits as other variants - for example, an osprey-variant hybrid has barbed pads of their feet, allowing them to deal more damage with their talons.

The difference between haetae variants is more to do with personality than physical traits like harpies. Tiger variants are stuck-up and isolated - they won't communicate with other haetae families unless they have to. Goat-variant haetaes are a lot more straightforward, although with a much shorter fuse. Lion variants are loud, and overbearing. You get the gist.

I want to thank everyone their support with reblogging my stuff over the years and reblogging some of the context of the situation.

Tumblr and Instagram is filled with the most supportive people I’ve ever had the chance of meeting. The last time something like this happened, I didn’t have much support, not even from people I thought were close to me. It took me a year or two to be okay with being perceived again in fandoms. So I’m very grateful for everything.

I just wanted to post that I appreciate all of the asks and I’ve been reading all of them. I actually get anxious I’m spamming everyone too much so I probably won’t reply to everything. So i have a small nicpic i wanted to share with you about your interpretation of spike in the au and i want to make two things clear before i talk

1) i havent watch the series for a little while as of now so i might be misnterpreting a aspect of this chatacter that might have never been there and only apeared in fan content and personal interpretation (since that whats been keeping me on the fandom)

2) this is not a big problem about the au i matured enough to not get angry at a interpretation of a fictional charater

I feel spike being the same race as the rest of his familie makes him lose a part of his character that might have not been central but was still something interesting about him and is the idea of not mayhering how diferent he looked from his adoptive family (and his cominty as a whole) he was he was still seen as part of it

Again this isnt a big problem with the au as a whole its just a small nicpic that i have about the au and its not going to make me hate the au

I understand this criticism and agree that having Simon/Spike be a different race than Thea could speak to their relationship in the original show.

My reasoning for designing them both to be African American is this. I believe Simon's adoption is enough to explore the feelings of separation and exclusion he may have with Thea and her family. The original show doesn't bring up Twilight and Spike's racial differences much because they originally didn't consider Spike to be a part of Twilight's family. As far as I know, there's no moment where someone says, "Wow! You're telling me you're related to Twilight Sparkle? But you look nothing alike!" because Spike was more so Twilights... familiar than anything.

Later episodes that explore their familial dynamic poses the conflict through Spike's adoption. There's one episode where Spike's "biological father" returns, and Spike accuses Twilight of not being his real family, which breaks her heart. There's another that delves deep into Spike's feelings of exclusion from Twilight and Shining Armor's siblinghood. Basically, in discussions of family dynamics, the show places more emphasis on Spike's identity as an adopted sibling rather than a dragon.

I really do believe a multiracial family would be good representation, but the racial dynamics would not be something I'd be interested in getting into. That's not to say I find real multiracial families problematic or uninteresting or unappealing or unimportant. I just wouldn't be interested in having to explain in-text that Simon (non-black) and Thea (black) are related over and over; it would grow tedious. It adds an extra level of writing complication and opens up racial discourse (discourse that I feel is unrelated to their relationship in the original show) that I don't want to concern myself with, especially because I have no experience in navigating such discourse.
