I wrote something!

This is mostly original work from my brain, although my lungs helped.

She’d been in and out of prison for too long and too many times, so that she’d gained an almost sixth sense, could feel the glare of cameras and hear the static of recorder, or so she claimed. Said she’d had nothing else to do in those cold white boxes except stare at the wall of cameras watching them watching her.

She escaped, obviously.

Said she had the help of a group of data miners, go by the name “the 7”. The 7 hacked into the prison-moon’s mainframe, didn’t exactly tell her how, but whatever they did must have worked. Turned the cameras black and the doors to open. The problem with automated security is no matter how many firewalls and failsafes you put up, an experienced and expensive group like The 7 only need to huff and puff to blow it all down.

She never exactly said what it cost her.

Some think she used to be a princess of the Charming crime family- charming only in name, brutal in nature. Some say her stepmother wanted her dead- hired a bounty hunter who hasn’t been seen since. Others say she betrayed the Sisters and we all know what happens to people who are dumb enough to do that. Whatever they say, they always forget to mention that she's lost her fortune and is now stuck, slumming it with the rest of us down here in the core... or at least she was, before King Cole took an interest.

The withered crime lord wanted to see if she really had the powers she claimed to possess. Got one, or should I say, three of his pigs to pick her up while she was in a drunken stupor outside Rumpelstiltskin's. That’s the roughest bar in the roughest part of the city; turns its barley to gold with marked up prices only the really desperate are willing to pay.

When she awoke on the floor of the warehouse Cole calls his castle, she was offered a bet: if she could find the recording device, he’d let her go, offer a job and the like. If it turned out she was lying, she’d be shot, simple as. She agreed. It wasn’t a hard toss-up between get shot or possibly not get shot, apparently.

The King hid a micro recorder in her room and waited.

I always though Mal's mom was meant to be like "Eleanor" but they stuck an M at the start honestly, Sobbing Emoji. But "Maleanor" also makes me feel less insane since in that scene where she's just handed egg Malleus to Lilia and went to battle, it sounds more like Lilia is saying "Maleanor" than "Meleanor" (Japanese accent pending). Mayhaps they went more with what it sounded like the characters were saying :0 (we don't talk about Doodle Suit to Paint The Roses)

the transliteration of her name is Marenoa (マレノア), which is what all the voice lines are saying! all the Draconias' names start with マレ (Malleus' grandma is Maleficia/マレフィシア) as a nod to Maleficent. :D it's almost certainly a take on Eleanor, which is Erenoa (エレノア), but her name is written in English at a couple points, and I was pretty surprised to see it was Mel instead of Mal!

and, like, that's fine, it wouldn't be first Twst romanization that's tripped me up (like Keito for Cater, I know that's something to do with the loanword specific to playing cards(?) but it's just not how my brain wants to read it). but now Eng has given us Maleanor! and someone else said it was spelled inconsistently between Maleanor and Maeleanor??????? so WHO KNOWS it's a SPELLING FREE-FOR-ALL

I AM torn on which I want to use, because Mel just sounds so cute to me (and is what I'm used to now), but...the Mal consistency is kinda too good to pass up. alas, alas, truly these are the most difficult conundrums of our times. 😔

honestly, when i first saw sora's backstory, i didnt react much, but now im noticing everything and its just really sad to think about

see this little kid who was full of hope? see this girl, that was just an innocent kid full of life, having that one role model that every kid had in some point of their lives?

this girl was then stripped away from everything she loved the moment she realized the truth, that this "role model" of hers was abusing poor innocent creatures, that their people have been brainwashed by this so-called emperess she actually used to follow, having your own parents shun you and take away everything you had and isolate you just because you knew the truth, and said truth wasnt just something bad, no, it was a fucking nightmare to think about, imagine taking that all in at 10

if the merge never happend, she would've been stuck in that sucker of a realm her whole life. she wouldve never been able to continue her childhood, her love for tech, nothing just absolutely nothing. she wouldve been locked away and alone forever, she wouldnt even have her own family by her side

the fact she didnt even hesitate to leave when the merge happend is heartbreaking, she was so fucking young, and was treated so poorly by everyone. imagine staying like that for probably months. she even named herself after that freaking dragon to respect her.

and as someone who actually experienced what sora had to endure when i was a kid, being shunned by my family for nearly a year during that time, i just have to point out that:

ana and sora are two completely different charcters.

when ana left, she became sora. a completely new person that was an ending with a new beginning, seeds that became remenants.

I know alot of people will disagree with me and say that lloyd had a tougher backstory, or maybe harumi, etc, but every charcter experienced something the other wouldnt handle, making no tragedy rougher than the other

i have nothing else to say but..damn

is there an official or commonly agreed visual of Sleep?

Hi Anon! As for an official visual: no, the only thing we know from the official lore is Sleep's name (which isn't even his 'real' name) and that he's an old deity promising glory and magnificence for following him.

As for a commonly agreed one: there are certainly some repeating motifs (on Tumblr, I'm not venturing outside of here), but I wouldn't say we have one 'fanon' version of Sleep too.

Here's a lovely post by @the-speakeasy in which various people describe their versions of Sleep, you should give it a try!

As far as I know, the motifs that repeat the most are:

a creature with a lot of tendrils or tentacles;

a shadow;

sea creature-ish entity;

any type of creature with 3 pairs of eyes.

Personally, I don;t think Sleep has a physical form. He's a shapeless voice in your head. But a. i have aphantasia and b. i'm biased because of the malevolent podcast, really.
