dont cancel me but i think it really is an odd flavor of parasocial dynamic (sry for the buzzword but its accurate and useful here lol) that britneys fans who professed their love for her and were vocal about wanting her conservatorship to end... were engaging with an idea of this woman that was totally artificial, in large part because of that very conservatorship and the abusive control she was subjected to for years privately and publicly.... the britney you "know" and "love" IS the one who has been stifled.

and i dont mean any of this in the sense of like "i care about this fellow human's wellbeing and something isnt right here" i mean it in the sense of like. if they didnt like her music in the first place, they would neither notice nor care. they heard her music and fell in love with it and by extension HER, britney, and subsequently decided to Stan and follow her every online communication and watch every frame of every shitty fan concert video clip on twitter etc etc etc.

how can you, as a fan, love someone, love the Person and not just their art, when you literally know nothing about them? in a deeper sense than what we typically mean when we talk about public figures. like... in addition to having a public image orchestrated by everyone but herself (managers publicists labels, but also tabloids and news media etc etc), she was being literally censored and monitored by her abusers constantly. you dont know anything about who britney spears is other than some biographical facts...?

i want to preface this by saying i dont interact with the ninjago fandom at all, and i know near nothing about behind-the-scenes things or stuff said by production. this is all my thoughts babeyy (which means im going to sound absolutely clueless and talk abt things that hav probably already been resolved. wtv) none of this is supposed to be critical thinking LOL pls dont attack me. i sound complainey but i dont hate the show, this is how i show love for media <3

really the most pressing thing to me was. being really frustrated about garmadon’s whole arc at the end of tournament of elements. yknow when misako finds out about the letter. i feel like they didn’t really go into depth about RESOLVING that whole thing, like showing the repercussions and thoughts of all parties involved after the fact? how does this affect their family? i suppose misako and lloyd talked about it during day of the departed, kind of? but. my needy ass just goes “IT WASN’T ENOUGH.” really, i don’t really like character death or sacrifice as the resolution to a conflict or arc unless it’s done really well, and. is this supposed to feel unsatisfying?! because it is to me!!

yes. i know it’s a kids show. its super likely something's going over my head right now, but. it really made me think again because misako and garmadon didn’t really even talk after harumi revived his oni side, and especially after all the interactions lloyd and garmadon had during crystallized. seriously, someone rec me fics that explore misako and garmadon talking post tournament of elements please JDKWNFJSND. and really i didn’t hate the resolution of tournament of elements... this is my single major nitpick about it LOL

i was going thru ur blog and u have good posts about ableist aus and i was wondering - what if in the aus the requirements for warriors were different? Like instead of having to fight jay only hunts? Would the muddling of roles still be ableist? In a Tree-like situation?If its not presented in a "work super hard to get what you want" and more in a "yeah they can decide what he wants to do". This is mostly for jay (and cinder) specifically because they had desires to be warriors yet were forced to be medicine cats because of ableism (ig this can apply to briar but i just truly cant remember oots that well and i havent read her death). I am asking because i am still trying to unlearn the ableist mindset that i grew up with. Feel free to ignore this ask and thnx!

hey yeah thank you for asking! took the opportunity to write up more general thoughts on rewrites as a whole and i went over why exactly theyre ableist hopefully that provides a better perspective

i think the major thing to keep in mind is that the structure of the clans is very abled centric and overly ignorant of inner community work (for example dens are only solidified or altered when either the area takes damage/the clans grows wrt population) theres a fixation on marking territory and starting fights and whatever with other clans which is whats expected of most warriors to partake in. to fix those implications in any fanwork youve really gotta knead into them and understand the nature of their ableism....its not just a problem with cats being barred from being warriors its the whole occupation and the standard its held to, so to speak (+ that fits into general clan society being flawed but eh thats another thing and also its easy to branch out into thought about)

going to stress other disabled people might have other solutions to how disabled cats are received this is just how i like to think of things

first i think its kind of interesting to examine discrepancies between disabled cats in canon as somewhat of an indicator of clan attitudes and leaders and whatnot. like i think you could get something interesting by regarding lets say deadfoot in windclan and cinderpelt in thunderclan who both have bad legs yet had different experiences with them in clan life. if you wanna go a step further comparing generations like lilywhisker and deadfoot or cinderpelt and jayfeather (+ the consideration of how congenital disabilities are regarded) can also make things interesting and just give you an idea of what to do. having the clan systems stray from a clear-cut common attitude both gives you more freedom for different approaches + adds to worldbuilding anyway. imo boiling down clan society to perfect utopia just gets boring but you can have imperfections in the system that depict the disabled experience just fine. just be careful with them and the way they come across yeah?

(real quick as an in between. god just dont refer to cats/their injuries as crippled. it still happens somehow)

im a little ambivalent on the idea of creating a ‘special role’ for disabled cats to be thrown into. cause then thats a repeat of canon medicine den really. its like ‘oh youre disabled youre instantly discarded into the x role pit’ i think just adding substantial in-universe changes to the warrior rank itself (vagueness is fun actually) or expanding on ‘warrior types’ rectifies the othering angle. ‘othering’ as a whole is just as bad as the ‘exception’ archetype people run for most warrior aus i want to state that clearly. effectively if youre gonna introduce roles that dont depend on fighting or hunting or both make sure theres abled cats who have them too. like say you want a camp-based role where a cats job is to fix dens or one where they help in the nursery, its far easier for a cat who cant run to manage those but also have some cats who are physically capable of doing other ‘tasks’ do the same thing for personal reasons

the tree comparison is interesting honestly cause i guess you could just give a cat a particular thing to do as a nonfixed position. and roles accordingly being made for a cat to fill until they cant and the positions done away with afterward. but youve gotta do it carefully so you dont fall into othering as ive said. id avoid something like that personally i just dont like the quality of ‘well theyre not a warrior (the most noble/useful concept in cat society) theyre actually some other thing’

in general giving disabled cats agency and choice is the best thing you can do. whether this means them deciding on tasks they can do themselves or picking a certain kind of warrior to be or asking for an assistant to help them out when they do stuff. the way you wanna pull it off again depends on my first question of “how does the relevant part of your warrior cat world treat disabled cats already”

very important point, the majority of the ableism also comes in the form of character narratives and not just the structure of the world itself. like think for a bit why the writers decided jayfeather shouldve been forced to be a medic or why briarlight got killed off early etc etc. characters ‘wanting’ to be like the abled ideal and still being bitter about not fulfilling that years down the line are just part of the ableist storylines. if youre abled id literally say just do away with those sadstuck ‘i wanted to be a warrior!’ moments. if you really want to id say pull a cinderpelt or a shadowsight where a cats time in the medicine den started their fascination with medicine and they switched to that path due to personal intrigue. id say a more interesting and realistic angle to it is having a disabled cat who found fulfilment in doing something else besides being a warrior becoming bitter about their entire clan ‘mourning’ how theyll never fight again or giving them the pretence of being a warrior being the best thing you can do.... it depends on the character really

this is just a very basic disability thing but stray from the whole ‘useless/dead weight’ way of regarding disabled characters. like dont place their worth on how well they service a clan or not theyre still deserving of shelter and whatnot. you dont need to justify a cats existence or usefulness by going ‘well they may be blind but their sense of smell is excellent so we keep them around’ or whatever its just no good

last thing i can think of is like. dont disregard how a cats disability affects them. like its fine that briarlight cant fight (or even hunt major types of prey) she doesnt need some convoluted method that lets her do that. there are like a dozen other warriors hunting and fighting and theres present value and enjoyment in the stuff she does around camp. she doesnt have to be brightheart 2 its ok

You said 4A finale fell flat and I agree but I’m just curious in which ways did it fall flat for you? To me, I guess I was expecting some type of cliffhanger. Didn’t have to be scary or intense, I just expected something. And yeah that could have been Maddie going into labor. And I know people can debate until the end of time about Eddie and Ana but personally I have no problem with them like overall, if you stand back and look at the big picture. Eddie is trying to move on and Ana seems sweet and smart and nice but when you step closer and look at it, Eddie to me seemed so out of character in that episode. He was doing things that he wouldn’t normally do. Like, ok you went on maybe 2 or 3 dates with her and even after your son throws a fit you still think it’s ok to introduce her to him that soon? And also in the middle of a pandemic?? When his son is high risk and his son hasn’t even seen his friends or other family (I’m assuming). It just seems out of character. And before anyone comes for me, I’m fine with Eddie moving on and getting into a relationship. He could literally date anyone and I wouldn’t care as long as he’s happy. And maybe that’s the point of all of this- to show he’s trying to move on but Ana isn’t the one. Maybe she is and I’m a clown but I don’t personally see it. She’s lovely but I don’t see it. Buck and Taylor was interesting though. I’m all for them being friends because both of them seemed to have matured

glad you asked! my response ended up longer than i’d anticipated so i’ll put it under the cut:

i FOR SURE expected some sort of cliffhanger. i mean, tbh overall the episode didn’t really stick in my head that much? the most cliffhanger-y thing we got was hen and karen not being able to adopt nia (heart-wrenching but good narrative choice) although i would have liked for them to really dig it in and indulge us in more wilson family moments before ripping it from our grasp. i love to suffer <3 and i just think that if we had had a scene where the madney baby is born that would have been such a bittersweet contrast?? like actually watching it would have destroyed me and i probably wouldn’t have liked it bc it would have made me sad but since im playing god on this website it WOULD have been fantastic narratively and i WILL pretend i wouldve liked it.

buck and taylor was cute (and I LOVE their banter), but i kind of feel like the sudden friendliness came out of nowhere?? @benjji2795 made a post about this a little bit; taylor never apologized for what she did to bobby, so it doesn’t totally make sense for buck to be so nice to her?? however i love taylor and im glad she’s on the show. one of two things should’ve happened: she apologizes to bobby and wham bam now her and buck are besties with a fun dynamic (note FRIENDS, not romantic partners, because they have different priorities and are canonically not romantically compatible!! and thats okay!!) OR her reoccurrence on the show is established as some sort of antagonistic ally. i think that would be so fun.

okay okay i have my own thoughts on eddie and ana and that whole situation. let me split this up to make it legible:

on eddie being out of character:

something was definitely wrong this episode. him introducing ana to chris does not sit right (for ALL the reasons you mentioned, which I completely agree with). As far as i’m concerned, there are two possible reasons:

eddie was just plain ooc and it was due to bad writing. it makes me disappointed, but i think this is the one that’s most likely.

eddie was in character, but he was jsut the worst side of his character. someone made a post about it that i found pretty interesting. idk if i completely agree with it bc to say that eddie introduced ana to chris so she could fill what eddie thinks is an empty space in their lives sort of undermines the whole talk he had with bobby the scene prior. 

HOWEVER this interpretation also gives ana the opening to have narrative agency and set boundaries for herself and tell eddie she likes him but she didn’t sign up to be a mom. but i don’t think the writers (or r*an, because he sucks and is also not that great of an actor) are thinking that deeply about his character (but maybe they are. who knows).

on ana:

i’ve said this before and ill say it again. the way she’s set up to be both disliked by the audience (because she’s so blad) and disposable to the narrative (because she’s so bland!!) makes me upset. she literally doesn’t deserve that and it’s disturbing to watch (both onscreen and in fandom reactions). i don’t know what else to say except i hope she either gets a well-written, significant story arc or she leaves the show soon. i don’t want to see her being a romantic accessory anymore. 

also i think she’s cute but that’s just gabrielle walsh kjdsfl

okay i agree that a relationship is necessary for eddie to be able to move on. like i get that. i agree. it’s part of his growth. here’s the problem with that though. 

the WAY the show handles eddie moving on is very blatant. it is very streight forward. ‘oh, he’s moving on? new girlfriend!’ the thing is, they kind of forgot to give said girlfriend a personality (see above). and BECAUSE OF THAT (or, at least, it’s a contributing factor) they have no chemistry and are terrible to watch onscreen. 

i tried to like them. i really did. i tried to frame it as ‘hey, theyre jsut two people who have crushes on each other and we can watch them flirt and yadda yadda and itll be cute, right?’ ive made posts about their dynamic together and trying to find an angle to make it fun. but i cant. i literally cant do this anymore. i actually cringed at nearly every scene they had together. it was unpleasant and boring and i would love it if it were over soon. if the creators are seeking to both produce a good/entertaining and moving show AND keep eddie and ana together, i’m curious to see how they do it because i truly have got nothing for them.

The thought that I had (kinda sad?) was that yeah. If MC dies, Alex WOULD TOTALLY WAIT FOR HER. THEY WOULDN’T EVEN HAVE THE IDEA OF MOVING ON. EVER.

They wouldn’t think of finding another love because they already have one love on their mind and soul. I mean, they believe that if MC was not their true soul mate, then they would be able to move on. But they can’t. They love her and theres NO convincing to me that can convince me that they wouldn’t do that.

And IMAGINE. That when MC does die (if she ever does) it takes her awhile to reincarnate. BUT when she does, she’s still in New York, she grows up a normal childhood, but she occasionally passes by this build building and she just feels drawn to it. She wonders what it is. She finds out it’s an agency that helps keep peace in New York and has to interact with gods a daily basis. She grows up to be a kind person who wants to keep peace, so she’s applies for the job. Little does she know, her true love aLREADY WORKS THERE.

And still loves lemon cookies!!! And still has a terrible sleep schedule.

AND she still looks very similar to her original image I mean like original body. AND SHE STILL KNOWS HOW TO MAKE ALL OF HER BAKING FOODS. And that’s why when Olympus is notified that a new agent is now working for them, they look at her profile and are like “gUYS. ITS MC. SEND HER TO ALEX” and they do and Alex (like one of your AUs you had a long time ago Meg) sees her and almost cries. Like they’re on the verge. They’ve waited so long and missed holding her, and now she was bAAAACCKKK. IN FRONT OF THEM. Whenever they see her in the office, they can’t stop themselves from greeting her every morning and giving excuses to see her in their office.

And sHE DOES THE SAME. She checks in on them, tries to give them coffee (it’s still the same way MC always made it) AND SHE BRINGS IN TREATS FOR EVERYONE. But people don’t say anything because these are new people. I kinda say it’s maybe been 30-40 years since she has died (not counting the years it took to reincarnate). Just maybe idk. So it’s new people and they think this new girl is great while Alex, one of their bosses, is having a cry session at finally being able to see their wife and soulmate alive and having a chance to be with her again. They hear that she doesn’t have a significant other from the gossip people. They didn’t think they’d have to rely on gossip but here they are.

They didn’t have the same background anymore. They weren’t best friends anymore. Well, they still are but Alex has to try and remind her of her past memories. And they WILL try. They take a leap of faith and ask her on a date after about a year of going back and forth. Actually, no. It’s been like 4 months they can’t help themselves y’all. She thinks its probably wrong but they assure her it’ll be fine. She, feeling drawn to them as well without really seeing them too much, agrees aND IT GOES GREAT. THEY GET ALONG LIKE THEY HAVE BEEN BEST FRIENDS FOREVER. BECAUSE THEY HAVE BEEN YALL. And eventually down the line of a few years, MC and Alex get together again and MC remembers everything.

Don’t ask how. My brain didn’t go that far. I’m just assuming the gods did something and she’s like “oh my gods Alex iTS YOU AND IM HERE AGAIN!!!” MY SOULMATE” and they have a crying session together, she goes and visits her moms grave to just be like “...momma I’m back,” and she and Alex both cry. And Aphrodite cries too because her daughter in law is BACK AND ALIVE AND HER BEST FRIENDS DAUGHTER is back. Hades has a little cry but he didn’t know her like as close as he knew her mother so he doesn’t get as emotional. BUT he did offer emotional support to Aphrodite and Alex when they needed it because he knows how important MC is to both of them. But yEAH. If Josh and May are still alive she goes and visits them and is in tears and they are as well because they love her and miss her and cARE FOR HER AND JUST DJWNDWN.

And let’s not get started on how Aphrodite and Alex both blame themselves for something no one could have predicted. That’s for another sad AU and a post another day guys :). But yeah hope you had a good time crying with me.

EDIT: Alex didn’t believe it at first but they felt it when they looked at her in the eye. They were drawn to her and not just because of her looks that are similar to MC. It’s just...the way she talks, the way she acts, the way that she just LIVES. It’s basically MC and it’s why they’re able to get her memories back and fall in love again.

Princess Protection Au Part 1

Characters…Again!

Scorpia - When her kingdom was attacked by mysterious forces, Scorpia is glad to join the Horde. Here they accept her, unlike the PPP who wouldn’t accept Scorpia or her kingdom. Scorpia has a kind exterior and is doing her best with her own best friend squad. Why, she’s even drawn art of herself, Catra, and Entrapta. It’s pretty good if you ask her.

Entrapta - Caught in a similar situation like Scorpia’s, Entrapta’s kingdom was destroyed. The Princess Protection Program no longer to be found, the opposite of what she was told by her parents who said they would save her. Entrapta joins the Evil Horde with new resolve. Here there is no one to leave her. There will be no one to abandon her again.

Light Hope - We are still really hoping her name isn’t Doris like do you realize how terrible that would be because it’s that terrible. The thought gives me hives. Anyways, no one is sure of Light Hope’s real name. She is a mysterious figure, and operation leader of the Princess Protection Program. She prides herself on their 85% success rate, and her only known motivation for achieving all of this is because she believes its the right thing to do. Maybe? We really aren’t sure about that in PPP HQ.

Hordak - We think his name is Hordak. Which really says alot about our databases. Maybe he has another bad name? Like Kyle, Kyle is a terrible name. Hordak sounds like he’s choking to death on a hotdog. Maybe if we’re lucky he will. Hordak is the distant ruler of the kingdom Fright Zone, the next door neighboor to the now destroyed kingdom Bright Moon. One day evil planted itself into the mind of Hordak and now he seeks to take over all the kingdoms, like he’s bootleg bowser, its great for him that he has an 11% success rate. Not so great for everyone else that isn’t the Evil Horde. And yes, everyone calls them that.

Agent Dao - Called Micah by his close friends. Agent Dao was a kind man, and sure enough he would be able to break Agent Angella’s cold exterior we see today. Agent Dao was apart of the Princess Protection Program along side his wife Agent Angella. Unfortunately, Agent Dao finds himself no longer working for the agency, as he is doing bigger and better things. Like supposedly being 6ft underground.

Lonnie - Catra’s new bff, actually not bff. Actually you know what? Lonnie is not defined by her relationship to Catra. She is her own person, with her own feelings, and thoughts. Why is no one a citzen of the Horde yet? Why does the Horde have Child Soilders? Lonnie might often find herself wondering the intergriety of the Horde, but she doesn’t have much time to ask questions with Shadow Weaver breathing down her and Catra’s neck all the time. Rebellion is often punished and that’s so not what she needs right now, what she needs is to know why Catra got a 3 week vacay in Etheria, and Lonnie has to replace her post in Rheas. Now that i think about it, this all goes against the 3rd sentence in this paragraph. Anyways, Lonnie is confident in her abilities and she don’t need no Catra.

Regalio - A Horde Soldier, who replaces Catra’s position in Rheas. Magic might be real, but Regalio is not a giant lizard. Sure he has a giant dianosaur tattoo, and he loves his pet geko Hanzo, but why does that matter to you? It’s not like he goes were-godzilla whenever there’s a crescent moon. That would be stupid and a total twilight rip off bc we know twilight has the rights over werewol- I mean were-godzillas. Not that those exist, because once again..that’s stupid.

Kyle - Wow here’s a horrible name in action. Who named him? His mother? She has bad taste. A soldier working for the Horde, Kyle is terrible at his job. Unable to do things the right way, you know such as, be bad properly. It’s shocking Kyle was allowed to infiltrate the Castle in Rheas. Maybe Hordak was hoping this failed soldier would fall off a balcony. We know Catra was.

Places

Etheria - A country, not a monarchy. Located far away from Rheas.

Fright Zone - The orginal kingdom of the Horde. Hordak enjoys evil laughing there alot. Sometimes if he’s in a good mood, Shadow Weaver gets to evil laugh with him.

Rheas^1 - Theodora’s and Amara’s Kingdom. Home to the Jewel of Sperrus. May hope and honor guide you.

Canaille High School - A highschool in the country of Etheria. Grades 9-12. How does that middle schooler Frosta keep getting in here? Tell her she’s 12 and can’t be in here! Also, get her out of my vents!

Lune Brillante: Horse Range - Like stated earlier. I want Swift Wind here! Angella Dao and Zuan Tuyen Dao^2 own the horse range!

Hello and welcome everyone to Comic Tea Party’s Week Long Book Club~! This week we’ll be focusing on Sunstrike and Bluemist: An Origin Story by ShaRose49~! (http://sunstrikeandbluemist.thecomicseries.com/)

QUESTION 1. What has been your favorite scene in the comic so far? What specifically did you like about it?

QUESTION 3. Who do you think Kairo being a double agent for and for what reason? What are the organization’s goals? How does Kat and Evan’s training factor into the organization’s goals to the point it’s an advantage?

QUESTION 4. Do you feel the secret police are a force for good or a force for evil? How might Kat’s dad’s return to investigations play a role in the story, especially considering he’s investigating super-human traffickers?

Kat is definitely my favourite character. Hey what's not to love? She's fiery, driven, sweet, and wild. And she has green hair... I love that she doesn't let anything stop her. Not the prosthetic leg, not the challenges of being a mutant, not anyone else's fears. She courageously stands up for what she believes is right.

QUESTION 5. Why do you think Evan wants to keep his true self hidden, even from Kat? Do you think Evan will open up more as time goes on? How might his work for the secret police help or hurt him where this is concerned?

I’m encouraged that some people really like Kat. She’s a real outlet for me

These are really interesting questions, some of them I haven’t really thought of

Idk if I’m allowed to answer a question since I’m the author, but I think my favourite scene so far is the scene in the bedroom

I think Evan has a lot of pain and scars and he's afraid to open up and create attachments because he might lose them. To me he seems equally scared of getting hurt and hurting others. That's a theory anyhow.

And I think he will open up more, especially with someone like Kat around.

As for secret police..I think it will force him out of his comfort zone, and that's probably in and of itself going to be very good for him...can't wait to see where it all goes.(edited)

Favorite scene was the fight with the mugger. It was a great showcase of the two's powers, and also the mugger was kind of funny.

my favorite is dad. he's not perfect, but he tries his hardest, and i love him for it

QUESTION 6. Do you think working for the secret police will be everything Kat dreamed of? What unfortunate obstacles do you think might interrupt Kat’s dreams of living openly as herself?

1) my favorite scene is probably the bedroom scenes. if only cause shallow-ly, i really loved evan just walking through the damn wall. hes so dang casual about it that i can help but admire how normalized the powers are to them in comparison to other ppls reactions. 2) the dad because he walks that fine line between looking out for the kids' safety and acknowledging that they are ppl who need room to grow and become their own ppl. that honestly a really rare depiction that i feel we dont get to see enough of in comics. 3) i want to assume its for an agency that is trying to disstablize the use of things like secret police. and the advantage comes in that if they can show the secret police are dangerous and have super powered ppl working for them, they can convince others to shut it down. 4) i have mixed feelings on the secret police. i assume its a bit of both. the little guys just want to do good things for the world. but the larger entity has probably slowly corrupted or something. become riddled with office politics. something like that. i feel the dad returning to investigations is significant to the story since hes probably gonna find leads the kiddos are gonna follow. 5) i think evan wants to keep his true self hidden cause he doesnt trust anyone and kind of hates everyone secretly cause he hates himself. i actually think working for the secret police is gonna hurt with him opening up. cause i feel hes always gonna get into trouble doing with kat wants instead of developing as his own person and its gonna get overwhelming. 6) i dont think the secret police will be everything kat dreamed of XD cause i think kat is gonna find when an organization doesnt have huge oversight, bad things tend to happen. not to mention, i feel like she has this delusion shell suddenly be accepted with open arms by the world when more likely theres gonna be some levels of discrimination.

yeah i think the secret police aren't going to be as rosy as kat expects. there's levels of bureaucracy, or she isn't allowed to be open the way she wants, or something...

Well I guess we’ll see. I do think @RebelVampire is the most accurate when describing Evan’s internal struggle so far. And I love how many people favour the dad, Derek. And it sounds kind of like you guys think the Secret Police is like S.H.I.E.L.D. or something lol

And yes, while Kat is a beautiful gem she is too accepting to the point where she is naive and even clueless. But what else would you expect from someone who’s grown up kind of in hiding with no or few friends? It’s actually amazing that Evan is more cautious and less trusting, but to be fair he’s had some traumatic experiences with people, much more so than Kat, but I won’t spoil it

I didn’t expect people to think so highly of Derek I thought I was better at writing younger characters so thanks you guys🥳

QUESTION 7. In general, what tasks do you think Kat and Evan will be doing for the secret police? Do you think Kat and Evan will run into other people with abilities? Do you believe the two will be able to handle it, or will they be outmatched?

Hmm that's an interesting question...

I'm not really sure what they'll all be up to, but I'm definitely curious to see. I'm guessing they will run into some other mutants down the road...although I can't really see them fighting one of their "kind."

You can’t imagine the, fighting, say, a mutant SUPERVILLAIN??

I’m not saying that’s gonna happen this episode, but keep in mind this story has superhero themes

As for other mutants showing up this episode...let’s just say there may be a cameo

I'm not sure what the secret police will be willing to let Kat & Evan do at first. Because even though they are supermutants, they're also children. Maybe they'll be sent to deal with parking violations at first?

Whoo, finally caught up with work, so I can read comics again! I'm really enjoying the family dynamic in this one and probably like Kat the most. She's very earnest and energetic about her goals, and I'm looking forward to seeing if the secret police will encourage that or just add layers of moral grey.

I'm assuming Evan's parents died in a tragic mutant-power-related accident that he blames himself for and he was trying to attempt suicide back there before Kat called out to help with her prosthetic leg. I would hope he learns how to overcome his feelings of guilt and shame, but that seems like a long road and I could also see him giving in to those dark feelings and becoming an antagonist. Too early in the story to really tell!

7) i assume theyre going to be handling super powered ppl and perhaps other situations where the situation is easily solved with their powers. like evan's walk through wall ability could come in really handy for doing the sneaky sneaks. but i assume super villains cause this is why you get ppl with superpowers, to fight the super villains that regular civilians cant. as for their ability to handle it, they are 1000% going to be outmatched i think for a while. mostly because youth breeds arrogance and cavalier attitudes while their inexperience breeds clumsiness for lack of a better word. not the best combo. 8) i assume kairo specifically requested it, and im going to guess that the situation is them having to fight a super powered bad guy or something. cause for kids just starting out in the secret police, thats not a situation youd want to be involved in right off the bat. i assume theyll manage to get out of it though. just cause if they dont the comic ends cause everybody be dead.

QUESTION 9. Overall, how do you think being “superheroes” will change Kat and Evan, both in regards to their own personalities and their views of the world?

Kat's been strong-willed and taking risks and doing things she's not supposed to because she feels it's right, so I expect that'll get her into a fair bit of trouble when going after bad guys is her job. Evan is less risk-averse, but also prone to being pulled into trouble by Kat. I expect their problems are going to get a little more complex working with double agents and sides may become more difficult to choose, but I'm curious where becoming less sheltered and open to the world about their powers will take them, since we haven't seen many other examples of how people with powers are treated in society. Is it an X-Men "everyone knows they're around and hates them" thing or a Superman "superpowers are rare and letting people know my secret will be a huge hassle for me"?

welp i showed up to this discussion late but nevertheless i have things to say that are pretty similar to what others have said

first off my favorite character is kat. i decided this when she was like "by the way, you disgust me :)" to that criminal in the beginning of the story. great moment! i also like her design a lot, and the comic's use of bright colors in general

kat and evan view their role in the world v differently and i don't think they'll change easily. maybe evan will come around to accepting that it's okay to be in the spotlight, but i think it's more likely he'll keep wanting to hide away and that'll interfere with their work. even if he doesn't become a full on villain i think he'll at least want to do his own thing

as for kat, i'm worried for her, because i always worry about upbeat characters lol. what if being a Hero isn't what she expected huh, what if it sucks at first? i think evan would handle a reality shock better than kat since he isn't that enthusiastic about it to begin with. but kat might end up being really disappointed until she can adjust.

i really hope evan doesn't turn evil (or, like... evil adjacent?). then turn into a sibling vs sibling fight and ahhh oh no ;_;

QUESTION 10. What are you most looking forward to in the comic? Also, do you have any final thoughts to share overall?

9) i think for kat she's going to learn that doing the right thing is less black & white than she wants to believe. and that sometimes ppl do bad things with good intentions. so playing superhero is complicated and not just this 100% awesome thing. and i think shes really going to have to come to terms with the fact powers dont make her invincible and that ppl can get hurt as bystanders. as for her personality, i think overall itll mature her and make her more conscious of how her actions affect others at the end of the day. as for evan, i think hes gonna have an internal conflict about his personal feelings on his powers vs. the world showing him he can make a positive impact. and so while not evil, i think its gonna make him super angst for a while until eventually he chills out and learns to care about himself. i also think hell learn some independence and that he doesnt just have to follow kat everywhere. 10) im actually most looking forward to more world-building. seeing things like how the secret police are generally regarded, how powers are regarded, who kairo might be working for, etc. i think these are some elements thatll really set the stage for the future for kat and evan.

When I first posted this on my other tumblr it was way before any youtuber did a letsplay of it, so I’m gonna have to rewrite parts of it and readdress some things. Thats not at all saying I dislike them, I actually found a majority entertaining. But now everyone pretty much knows what happens in DDLC, the jig is up and we all are #triggered with two infamous words.

So, listen. I know what you’re thinking. Why am I recommending a totally moe looking VN? I’m not moe, I don’t go gaga for animu girls. But I do love me some visual novels, and I love me some meta-level fuckery. Doki Doki Literature Club is a ren’py VN that just (now somewhat) recently came out that looks completely harmless. What could possibly go wrong? And It’s COMPLETELY FREE, yes you heard me, free. So fucking play it (unless it's going to trigger you, in which case pls don’t). And it’s… really interesting.

To really talk about why I enjoy DDLC so much, unfortunately, we need to talk about when this cute moe dating sim turns into a glitchy acid horrorshow. The game starts with you choosing your name and being introduced, and then the game introducing your next door neighbor and close friend Sayori who looks like a bubbly ray of sunshine. She convinces you to join her (*surprise*) literature club at school, and you meet three other girls: Nasuki, Yuri and Monika. They seem like pretty nice girls. Nasuki is the typical young tsundere, Yuri the quiet passionate type, and Monika, who seems, well… pretty normal. You join their club and immediately get wrangled into things and this is when it starts taking a weird turn. Monika breaks the fourth wall. Yuri drops she’s into some weird shit. Nasuki has troubles at home. And Sayori might have a little bit of a crush on you. 

Then you have to write a poem.

UHH GAME, WHAT THE FUCK ARE THE POEM WORD CHOICES????

This process repeats but the game starts forcing you (or at least in my playthrough) into decisions, which in my experience with VNs is a telltale sign of an Oncoming Bad End (see mysme, amnesia, etc.) Monika becomes an ominous figure of knowledge (at first I thought maybe she was a yandere stalker… oh, was I wrong). Yuri goes batshit crazy yandere obsessed with you. Natsuki keeps a somewhat level head, surprisingly enough. 

Sayori though, poor Sayori has it pretty rough. You find out she’s dealing with a surprisingly accurate depiction of MDD (major depressive disorder) at least by cutesy video game standards.

Shit gets real when the day of the festival when Sayori ends up being missing and Monika heavily lampshades something bad. You race home and the game starts glitching out as you find Sayori has committed suicide. Having seen a fair amount of bad endings in VNs, I was like “wow this is over the top, but ok” and the music gets lowkey terrifying. I was expecting to see the BAD END screen as most otomes go and for the title screen to show up and it does, but YOUR SAVE FILES ARE MISSING. (nice page out of cheritz book y’all, good shit ;) )

This is refered to as ACT 2 of the game and the demarcation line of when we realize we are playing a horror game not an otome. The title screen is glitchy and corrupted over where Sayori was. And then the game starts bugging the fuck out and shit gets real. Shadow selves with darkened text, crazy yandere eyes and Monika handwaving everything away. The poetry gets to a level of insanity that’s unreal as Yuri basically goes cuil theory on your ass at one point.

Anyway, JUST MONIKA, amirite?

Let’s skip ahead then backtrack. What I think makes this game so great is the level of awareness we must assume Monika has. She’s completely aware she’s in a video game and is forced to watch her friends around her be romance options and fall in love, but she’s been relegated to the role of side character and thinks she has no agency in the story. And this takes a toll on her sanity. She tells you in The Final Room that she started messing with the character data to make you dislike the others, but since it backfired and it only drew you closer to each of the other girls she had to take more drastic measures.

Completely frustrated after all the corruption of their data doesn’t work, she resorts to pushing Sayori’s depression to suicide. Letting Yuri’s cutting finish in a finale of garbled text and stabbing herself to death only to let you stay with her as she rots over the weekend at school. Nasuki gets outright deleted from the game on a whim by Monika, and then she goes so far as to delete everything so it’s just the two of you sitting in a room. The assumption is that it’s a pretty permanent situation. Try turning the game on and off at this point. Yeah.

Yeah.

Anyway, Monika is without a doubt, one of the best versions of how a yandere knowing the meta of the situation can make a situation horrifying. Think like Yuno Gasai from Mirrai Nikki. If you know the plot and have god-levels of information, you can fuck around mercilessly with the viewer/player. And Monika does. The slow descent into madness the game takes because of her corruption of the game is probably my favorite part. The blink-and-you’ll-miss-it changes of the characters, music, and surroundings. And the railroading you into choices giving you such a sense of helplessness as you play. I really felt like I was on a train off the tracks by Act 2 and it was great.

You really think you have choices (at least at the end), but the more and more I think about this and go in for another playthrough I don’t think you ever truly have ANY choices and Monika’s holding all the cards. It begs the question what is Monica supposed to be? A sentient AI? What actually is Doki Doki Literature Club? Some weird form of a reverse turing test once you get to the Monica Room? It’s bizarre and oddly novel in its take on the VN horror genre by stripping you of any power to do anything and sit back terrified as it gets meta on you. No matter what you do the culmination of the game is essentially the same and there’s no real happy end in sight or resolution once you realize that even the game is aware it’s not real. At that point you are finishing it to finish it, to come to an ending. 

And that's simultaneously the best and worst part about it, but man I can’t complain, that was a wild 5 hours of my life....

Oh, by the way, hope you’re familiar with deleting files out of your game library, because Monika isn’t going anywhere until you do... still she has like tons of unique conversation if you wanna stay and chat for a while.

I did enjoy her anguish when I got rid of her even though I ended up really liking her later. I’m excited to see what happens because she’s rumored to be the protagonist in the next team salvato game. Yeah.

My only complaint of this game is once you know the premise it really doens’t hold replayability value, quite the same as anything from the horror genre is never really as scary as the first time around. It does what it does so well its not the same and is basically only worth playing again to fuck with your unassuming friends.

Which I, of course, did.

Things about my sole survivor I’ve hammered out now that I’ve had a lot of time and a couple playthroughs to do it hohohoho

it’s really long

Full name is Penelope Lynne Knight née Pratt, but practiced law under her maiden name because the firm she was a part of was founded by a Pratt ancestor of hers and had been in the family for a while- the Pratt name had a lot of weight to it even if being Penelope Knight was badass.

Spent a lot of time at the gun club her grandfather was a part of in her youth and into adulthood, and considers it to be a relaxing and fun pasttime. Her grandfather gave her her own rifle at some point, which she kept, but did not survive the 200 years she was in cryo. 

Codsworth (called Cornelius in multi-survivor aus) was purchased more as an aide to her husband, Arthur, than as a nanny/housekeeper, but nevertheless, bonded strongly with her son.

Arthur has pretty severe PTSD from his time as a soldier, thus Codsworth. Penny is a great rock for him, but between her job as a lawyer and her status as a new mother, can’t be everything he needs.

Shaun’s name is Casey (Or Caleb, I haven’t decided), nicknamed to Kay.

Guiding personality traits: Friendly/Condescending; Reserved/Suspicious; Determined/Calculating

Main weapon: Shotgun

Opinion on the companions:

Closest to: Nick, Deacon, Hancock, Cait

On good terms/friends with: Preston, Piper, Codsworth, Maccready, Longfellow, Dogmeat, Curie, Ada

Did not recruit/on bad terms with: X6-88: man I knew I was gonna blow the Institute before I even started her up the first time so tbh, I avoided X6 like the plague on that playthrough. I’m gonna actually talk to him this time so it may change; Strong: she did not even touch this, and may have wound up killing him when she refused to take him with her and he became insistent that she show him the milk of human kindness; Danse: she travelled with him for a while since the BoS has strong similarities with the military she’s familiar with/reminded her of Arthur, but left (and left them on read) when she understood what their intentions were; Gage: technically yeah ok she recruited him but she also killed his ass along with every other raider in Nukaworld.

Most of my stuff on Kay was developed in a dual survivor/dual Shaun au, so thats how this is gonna be

Kay is hugely ambitious and not a little bit cruel, tbh, and it’s only (in large part) because of how the Institute raised him. In a world were the war didn’t happen, he would have had a mean sense of humor and been a little more ruthless in his workplace than his peers would have been comfortable with. 

I imagine the Institute raised him and the other child in a very competitive way, which saturates all of their interactions in the future. Given his family’s history as intelligent, quick witted and successful people, Kay assumed he would prove to be the better child in every way and would be given the title of Director as a matter of course. This was not the case. While ruthless, he isn’t calculating enough to maneuver as well as he should within the Institute’s politics. As the ‘less successful’ child, Kay becomes bitter and manipulative, and is the one who releases his mother and the other survivor from Vault 111.

He has a mixed opinion of Penelope. From the records of her he is able to access, he built an image of her in his mind as fearsomely intelligent and harsh in her pursuit of law. This was the woman he wanted to live up to. To say he’s disappointed when she gets out into the Wastes and almost immediately aligns herself with the Minutemen, and moreover seems ready and willing to integrate into this new life and help people, would be an understatement. Any conversations he has with her post-Institute reveal are tense and barbed.

In dual survivor aus, Cornelius isn’t in Sanctuary, but with Kay, and is deeply suspicious of Penelope as faking her... self, somehow. He does not believe she is Penelope, mistress of his household, for quite a while.

Because “Father is dying of whatever and curses you with his last breath” is fucking dumb and I hate it, Kay’s life resolves a different way.

He does not expect Penelope to actually invade the Institute and put an end to it. And when it happens, he still thinks he can salvage the situation while still getting what he wants- the title of Director. He manages to kill the Director while the other man is trying to do damage control, but is shot himself in the process. After that is a period where he’s beginning to realize his world is falling down around his ears and Kay, while he’s furious and betrayed, has a fierce sense of possession and protectiveness for the people of the Institute, and they are dying around him. He makes his way to the transporter room and finds Tinker Tom and a couple other RR people trying to figure out how the transporter works, but there were advances and protections on this terminal that they weren’t prepared to deal with, and he harshly shoves Tom out of the way to begin operating it himself. 

The evacuation goes normally. Synth Kay still shows up, believing Penny to be his mother and the real Kay to be an uncle of some kind due to some time Kay takes between getting shot and this scene, I’m hand-waiving it, don’t look at me. Eventually, Penelope gets through the transporter with the understanding that Kay will follow her, but he doesn’t. He dies with the Institute.

This time the tape from him ends with a pause, and then Kay saying that he hopes this time, Penelope will be proud of him.

Post-game but pre-ghoul, Penelope runs for mayor of Diamond City and loses

She works in the same office as Nick for a while as a detective, when Far Harbor takes place

At some point they both agree that they both like eachother a lot but it’s getting crowded, and Penny opens a branch of the Valentine Detective Agency in Goodneighbor, to Hancock’s delight. 

7-10 years after the game, Penelope has an accident in the Glowing Sea while investigating something with Nick and gets a massive dose of radiation. During her recovery in the nearest non-Sea town, she begins the process of becoming a Ghoul.

During/after this she and Hancock become even closer, and begin joking about being siblings

Sidenote:

In worlds where Arthur survives and Penny does not, most things stay the same. However, he sinks deep into denial about the state of the world, where Penny mourns, but does her best to work with the case she’s been given and move forward with her life. He joins the BoS and becomes one of their most dedicated Paladins. He executes Danse when Maxson orders him to. The only companions he recruits are Dogmeat and Codsworth. Kay’s death changes slightly, to be by Arthur’s hand, and he dies in his arms.  Arthur dies in combat some months after the end of the game, in mourning, suicidal, and careless. He’s honored with in the BoS.

4. so (unfortunately for me her player, lol…), what it boils down to is that she sees him as a threat. with that in mind, post-Trespasser she primarily sees him as “Fen’Harel”. not the Fen’Harel of some portions of Dalish lore per se (although her cultural background, specifically her previous religious beliefs, probably do filter in a bit even though she no longer believes in the gods as she did, I think that’s quite natural), but this Fen’Harel, the Fen’Harel she read about in the passageways and world-pockets in the Crossroads:

Fen’Harel came later. An insult I took as a badge of pride. The Dread Wolf inspired hope in my friends, and fear in my enemies. Not unlike Inquisitor, I suppose.

he was at one point a companion and even, a friend. she has not forgotten. and we are more than our titles and our ambitions. but they are in opposition now-he is an enemy now. to Gryff, even if you put aside the other stuff like the deception etc, this looks like the role he’s intent on playing and the path he’s insisting on walking down. “Fen’Harel” is the mantle he’s taken on and how he’s now presenting himself. I think she sees his regret over his actions and that he doesn’t take any joy in what he thinks he has to do. but that to her, those things and what transpired between them before, are kind of irrelevant now? that to her he made them irrelevant, by setting out to do what he’s trying to do despite them. I think she thinks she has no choice. I think she feels like it’s her job to stop him. and I suspect, that somewhere deep inside, she’s unconsciously opting to conceive of him first as “Fen’Harel” to dull the blow of standing against her former comrade, and make what must come next easier to carry out.

5. so literally up until recently, I hadn’t 100% figured out which option she would choose here… I mean I had a fair idea, but I also kind of had this vague unconscious notion in the back of my brain that if I just thought about it hard enough, there would be a way to make things ‘work’ - to make the option I want to go with (Redeem) fit Gryff as a character. with the next DA game so far off, when Trespasser was released I didn’t feel a pressing urge to ‘lock-in’ my final calls for choices I wasn’t 100% on or to shore up my canon in preparation for da4. but I guess with the ME:A DLC announcement, my brain is shifting back into DA gear.

so - I think she chooses Stop Solas. I replayed Trespasser with Gryff for the first time in ages the other day, and played the final conversation with Solas out a bunch of times with the different options and responses..  and I’m like 8||| because no matter how I play it out with her, no matter what angles I try to look at it from, no matter what Olympic-level gymnastics twisting I try, I don’t think there’s a way I can make Try To Redeem Solas fit her character. there’s no way I can see, no way of twisting or cutting down or stretching or reframing, to justify it within the parameters of her traits and views. I think I’ve concluded that not only would it be an OOC move for her, it would be completely antithetical to who she is - like irreconcilable? its a square peg in a round hole, even with her character arc. (consequently I am cursing myself and like, deeply regretting my character-building choices, lmao)

what motivates her choice? ultimately, fear. fear not for herself but for her people. for their safety and their lives. for their future. for the world they inhabit. it goes back to seeing him as a threat. he poses a threat to her clan (the thing/group she loves and cares about far above All Else), modern elves in general (her People - even if some modern elves agree with/side with Solas), and the world of the present. Gryff can brook no threat to her people. she just doesnt work like that. Gryff seeks out and neutralizes threats. she’s a classic Counterphobic 6 (enneagram).

Phobias: No phobias, but fears yes. Her Fade tombstone would read Bana’vhenadahl, which verrry roughly (it’s lyrical shorthand and ancient elven as opposed to modern formal Dalish, for a start) means something like “the ruined tree of the People”. Gryff’s greatest fear, pre-arc, is the destruction/death of her clan (and by extension her failure to protect them) and the Dalish. Keeping them safe is her #1 motivation and driving force: secure, protect, defend. Post-arc her fear has changed some. She’s come to see all modern elves as her people, comes to want to protect and defend all of them; so her greatest fear morphs into some huge catastrophe befalling them - extinction or near extinction, mass subjugation/enslavement, something of this kind (they’re oppressed and scattered now to be sure, but her fear is of something vast and ominous and somehow far worse). Like, whereas before the threats were simpler and corporeal - bandits, templars, slavers, wildlife, etc - now it’s something more vague, huge and shapeless, felt on an instinctive level. Bana’vhenadahl is a symbolic way of expressing that I guess.

maybe the man’s mind can be changed, maybe someone she once shared something with could be redeemed and saved. maybe not. for Gryff it isn’t worth the risk - Solas as an individual, the relationship they had, any selfish wants/hopes she may harbor or have harbored relating to him/it - those things just don’t weigh up against the possible risk to her clan and people. she weighs “the possibility that he could be convinced otherwise” against “the possibility that they try to convince him and fail to do so, and then harm befalls her people”, and it’s not worth it. Gryff who doesn’t give a shit about gods and ancient elves anymore, Gryff who thinks Solas is stuck in and stuck on the past, Gryff who loves the Dalish and the City Elves and who values and respects the Dalish way of life, Gryff who so loves the world that is, flawed as it is.. Solas and Gryff ultimately both want the same thing (to save the elves), and they both have pride as a major flaw - but they’re just so painfully diametrically opposed in what “save the elves” entails. and maybe even, in who “the elves” are? that’s still unclear, who “the elves” are to Solas. I have described Solas and Gryff as foils and 2 sides of the same coin before.

I really enjoy how in Trespasser, when Gryff is like, I’ll have to stop you - Solas is like, I know you’ll try. in that moment, for a second, she’s paused in her anger at him and resolve to kill/stop him and reminded that, yeah, he does know her. they did really know each other well once, for a time. then there’s that gulf of their differences in values yawning between them again. and she rails at him that he’d murder countless innocent people - he’s like, wouldn’t you, to save your own? first time I heard that I was like damn, thats actually fairly solid checkmate there Solas, because yes, she absolutely would if it came down to it and probably without much deliberation or even regret. heck probably with less regret than he expresses in Trespasser about his own course of action. the conflict boils down to (like above) that it’s his own vs her own. and if I had her choose otherwise, or choose to potentially risk hers by trying to talk Solas down first, I think I’d be butchering her character.

going back to roles - ‘So long as the music plays, we dance’. not discounting their agency, but sometimes it feels like there are overarching forces at work here, moving all these pieces on the chessboard and in this sick ‘dance’.. they move Solas to do as he does and move Gryff to oppose him -  if Solas is change, Gryff is the status quo. if Solas is a wolf, Gryff is a wolfhound. sometimes I feel like, she’s no less on rails than he is.
