okay. So I've finished book 1 of keeper of the lost cities for the first time. And I'm loving this keefe dude already?? Like I never thought I'd like a fictional character so quickly. All it took was like one page for me to fall for him, I am aware that keefe is one of the most loved characters in the fandom, and I can see why (correct me if I'm wrong).

Also the book is a solid 9.5/10, the only thing I was frustrated about was probably the slight info dumping about the whole blackswan thing towards the end? because it took me like 3 reads to understand the whole situation, of course, we could just narrow it down to me being slow too, lol. But I'm VERY excited to continue reading the rest. So while we're at it, I'll put in my first impressions of the characters, so I can look back on it after I've read all the books, to see how much my perception has changed of them.

Sophie- i like her, she's really mature for her age, I keep forgetting that she's like 12 lmao. But she's well written, her emotions seem very raw and natural. Of course, she may seem overpowered but, I think that's the whole point of the story, she is supposed to be overpowered, so I don't mind and i wouldn't call her a Mary sue. Overall great protagonist, my girlie deserves a break tho, she got dumped in the hospital atleast 6 times lol.

Fitz- i actually think he's cool. I liked him better in the beginning of the story tho, I feel like afterwards, the dude kinda just disappeared a little? Keefe and Sophie seemed to have more private interaction than those two, and keefe literally only came by in the middle. But yeah, I feel like he had more of a personality in the start. Keefe and Dex, in my opinion had more personality in 5 minutes than fitz did the whole book, but I wouldn't judge so quickly, it's only the first book after all, Hopefully he'd have more page time in the later books. I still like him tho, just not as much as keefe.

Dex- Yeah he is such a typical best friend, I love him. His beef w the vackers is so funny lol I was relieved when Sophie stuck with him even after she became popular tho, also, he seems to have a crush on sophie right? It's kinda obvious, but overall friendship goals 10/10. I vocally "AWW-ed" after he said "are you kidding, i can't wait to tell everyone that you're my first friend" like I need a guy bestie like him :(

Alden- honestly, my heart warmed so much with his father-like dynamic with sophie tbh. He seemed to genuinely care about her well being, but I don't want to get too attached to him tho, just in case becomes a traitor or some shit later on, you can literally never tell with the adults lol. I've read enough books to back that up. But yeah, i really like him and della, the amount of reassuring hugs he gives sophie really heals me :(, They're like sophies 2nd (well, in her case, 3rd) parents. The amount of effort and lengths Alden put to get her out of trouble is actually sweet.

Elwin- This guy is such a W. He is like an adult keefe tbh. He is probably my favorite adult so far lol.

Cassius- I'm sorry, but Mr jerk face over here reminds me SO much of Lucius Malfoy??? Like ?? I feel so bad for Keefe, like poor baby leave him alone smh. I really wanna deck his royal highness in the face tbh.

Biana- absolutely loathed her in the beginning, she gave off such bad snob vibes lol but I love her now. I like the trope of two people forced to be friends w eachother by someone actually end up becoming friends. It's rather uncommon as far as I've read, atleast.

Grady and Edaline- is it bad that i thought they were going to be evil? Yeah I have so much trust issues, it's concerning. But yeah, they're both big W's, their backstory, their temporary contemplation to reject sophies adoption, everything aligned well with their backstory. Greatly written characters.

And last but not least, the king himself, Keefe- okay, he's like added to my list of fictional crushes now lol (along with Percy Jackson, Jason grace, Steve Harrington, chat noir, Eugene fitzherbert, edmund pevensie and Ravi singh ofc). How does sophie not have a fat crush on him, like- ma'am if you don't want him, I'll take him. But jokes aside, he feels like the most authentic character out of them all, tbh. Epitome of great writing. He was inserted to the story as this random dude that sophie runs into, and becomes an og in like 5 minutes. He is like a mix of Eugene from tangled, Kristoff from Frozen and chat noir from mlb all at the same time?? I cannot wait to see more of him and his backstory, especially with his parents. I know alot of people dislike the humorous guy with depression trope since it's overused, but I like how it played out on keefe, he uses school as an escape, which is very relatable.

Also, bonus, i LOVE the world building, the light leaping and all, very creative. I cannot wait to get my hands on book 2

tbh this is the most exciting issue for me since…the first one 💀 i’m going to talk about the story and art separately because Nikola Cizmesija’s one of my favorite action focused comic artists so this issue’s a treat 😭

Alfred used to mediate during a lot of Bruce and Damian’s early relationship, so it’s refreshing to see Bruce take more initiative involving himself in Damian’s life even if it’s for a case lol

a couple instances of Alfred’s fatherly support on behalf of Bruce and Damian from Batman and Robin (2011) #2, 4, 39 and Teen Titans (2016) #1

Damian seems to take Bruce's involvement more as a sign he’s not reliable rather than Bruce finally just. being around to help him. which is fair 😭

this is complementary to Cizmesija’s art, but i love this half of the page so bad 😭 the negative space and the shaded foreground with Damian mid-run gives this feeling of time kinda stopping for us to really feel the impact of Damian’s entrance AND the effect it has on Bruce, like!! that wide eyed expression in the below panel!! 😭

Bruce’s quiet “you can do it, son” to A FULL BODY CHEER OF “GO, DAMIAN!” Bruce witnessing Damian be great outside of Robin, and on top of that it’s just another mundane moment that Bruce has wanted with Damian 😭

this is such a goofy bully line sdfgh though the whole “broken” bit might be a callback to Batman and Robin (2011) #1, in that Bruce is really trying to do his job as a father here or i'm likely reading way too into it

SO the “shocking ending” of Zach being Zsasz’s kid was definitely a surprise but then got me wondering what is up with Williamson doing reveals of new kids for villains lol otherwise, the hints in the issue were neat!

the tally marks!! at least tallying blocks is pretty innocent compared to kills 😭

and Damian would recognize how Zsasz moves, since he’s personally fought him before in Streets of Gotham (2009)!! very much not in a sport, but uh maybe it was to Zsasz

the art!! first a shoutout to the colorist Rex Lokus for giving Damian his green eyes and maybe melanin (it didn’t look consistent throughout so i say maybe)!! 😭 also a Talia by Cizmesija!! even though this panel calls her a “not great” teacher…💀

SUCH A FUN PAGE 😭 i’ve been into montage scenes lately lol and i love how quickly Cizmesija establishes Damian’s routine - Tues, Wed, and Fri are the funniest for me!! Damian grumpily getting lectured by his teacher in the foreground while his classmate’s still visibly steaming from the hit he took LOL, DAMIAN’S BUG EYED STARE WITH HIS SUNGLASSES UP, and then Damian looming. stealthily. in a tree. while some kid is blatantly pointing him out HAHA 😭

Cizmesija’s use of motion lines and effects when conveying movement is so cool!! the shonen manga vibes jumps out!! the smoke/dust trails following the movements; the limbs and soccer ball having a sort of blur effect with the motion lines. V COOL.

which leads to my favorite part of Cizmesija’s work - HIS IMPACT SHOTS!!

more motion lines and effects!! the splatter effects!! the arcs!! the jolting impacts!! GRRAAHH!! the setup to that impact shot of Zach's block is so great, and then following with Damian's reaction!! i almost wish that "???" wasn't there, just because that expression of stunned silence already feels so loud!!

last thoughts about Cizmesija's art is that i'm really hoping for a showdown between Damian and Zach next issue because i need to see a Damian fight scene in Nikola Cizmesija-fashion 😭 we get a taste of it with Orca and soccer but i NEED MORE LOL for now, dropping the moment when Damian overpowers Zsasz, in Batman: Streets of Gotham #11 since it was such an epic moment

okay SLAPPING MY CONSPIRACY BOARD!! so on another note Principal Stone being Shush is starting to feel like a red herring and Ms. Heather Hall could actually be Shush. Shush’s main point about Damian as his instructor was emphasizing how much potential he has, but the “wrong” influence could affect that

Stone and Hall have made the same observation about Damian’s potential, but the difference is how they address that - one wants Bruce to be more involved while the other wants Bruce to back off

Stone acknowledged Damian can take care of himself but still wants Bruce to step up in Damian’s life; Hall says it’s okay to be a helicopter parent BUT implies giving Damian space (which we already know Bruce has given so much of after Alfred’s death to the point of neglect 😭)

Hall even suggests moving Damian on to college, which would estrange Damian further. also idk how Damian kicking his teammates/bullies asses at soccer is really “making friends” lol

and of all the subjects she’s teaching, it’s AP Biology - according to the current case Batman and Robin are working on, which is centered around DNA-sequencing, it makes Hall the perfect accomplice to Langstrom

this is where my brain started reaching because i laughed at first at how specific that comparison is, but then it just made me think of how Shush’s first introduction was sniping Bruce LOL anyway, Bruce’s reaction is me 😭

You didn’t expect to become the only human in the pack. You see there were two humans in the pack, You and Stiles, but after what happened to Stiles, he didn’t have much of a choice. Stile’s life was at stake. He was practically on his deathbed. So, you had to turn to your only option left, Scott. Scott bit Stiles to save his life. It was hard enough as it was, but Stiles becoming a werewolf, now that was even harder. He had a hard time trying to control his shifting. But he had his friends to help him along the way.

“Tell me again why we’re here?” Malia asked. She clearly wasn’t in the mood to attend another pack meeting.

“Because there’s a supermoon tonight, and we need to make sure nobody does anything stupid.” All eyes turn to face Liam.

“Oh, come on, it was one time.” He whined.

“Yeah, and it’s forever engraved in our heads,” Stiles told him. 

“It was really hot out that night.” He shrugged.

“Beacon Hills usually is during the summer.” Stiles quipped.

“Okay we get it guys, knock it off you two.” You gave a playful stern look to them. Whether those two believed it or not they were the best of pals. Liam looked up to Stiles and Scott, but he would appreciate it more if the guidance didn’t consist of the constant sarcasm and teasing. 

“Y/n’s right, we have a serious matter, this isn’t like any other moon we’ve been through, the supermoon will make us more aggressive, stronger, even violent, and we have to stay alert at all times, we can’t risk anyone getting hurt,” Scott informed his pack.

“Or killed,” Malia said. 

“Exactly.” Scott nodded.

“So how will we be able to control it?” Hayden questioned.

“We have chains, shouldn’t that at least help get you all through the night?” Lydia said.

“It’s not enough, everyone would break free instantly.” Scott shook his head. 

“What about mountain ash, would that hold you guys back?” Mason suggested. 

“That’s not a bad idea.” Stiles nodded.

“Great problem solved! Um, but what are we going to do about the human in the room?” You pointed at yourself.

“The human…will stay as far away from any of us.” Stiles flailed his arms around gesturing to the supernatural beings in the room.

“I want to help.” You pleaded.

“No, I’m not risking putting you in danger.”

“I am perfectly capable of staying away from danger.” Stiles stood silent. His shoulders slumped. You were gonna give him a migraine. He looked away shaking his head.

“What, I can!” You raised an eyebrow.

“Just stay home tonight Y/n, please, just go home.” He pointed to the door. Every one of them avoids your gaze. 

“Scott.” You looked at the alpha. 

He sheepishly looked up at you, then at Stiles, who shook his head no. 

“Stiles is right. You could get hurt, Y/n. So stay home okay.”

“Fine.” You muttered. Little did he know you weren’t going to listen to him.

“Okay, I think that’s enough mountain ash to keep you guys’ in.” Mason got up and dusted his palms on his jeans.

“Good job Mason.” Lydia stood beside him behind the line of mountain ash. They decided to keep them all in the library for the night. Scott, Hayden, Liam, Malia, and Stiles were all chained up to poles, the mountain ash was for just in case. All of them could feel how the super moon was affecting them. They let out grunts and growls. Fur growing on their face, claws coming out of their fingernails. It was a recipe for a disaster.

“I think that’s our cue to leave!” Mason started tugging on Lydia’s upper arm.

“Good idea.” She nodded her head in agreement. They ran out into the hall hoping that the mountain ash was enough to keep them from running wild into the night. When they thought they were good, it just got worse. They saw you walking past them. Lydia immediately calls after you to retreat.

You walked towards another set of doors pushing it forwards, the door creaking in response. You stood in the hallway. Staring down the dark eery hallways. There wasn’t anyone around. You never liked school at night. That gut feeling in your chest was telling you to turn back, and you almost did, except the low growl behind you caused a chill down your spine. You spun around slowly, your breathing labored as you now face what you were scared of encountering tonight. Your boyfriend was in full rage. You keep still in your tracks as two glowing eyes stare right back at you.

“Stiles.” You slowly stood. The only response was a grunt and heavy breathing. That further told your flight or fight response to take a step away from him.

“This isn’t you okay, it’s the moon taking control of you.” 

“This is me!” He roared, making you flinch.

“No, it’s not!” You cried out. You took each step back with caution.

“Baby, just, just find an anchor, okay? Yeah, an anchor, okay. Think of me.” You nodded.

“The only thing I’m thinking is wanting to sink my teeth in that pretty neck of yours!” 

Oh you were in total shit.

“Stiles please, okay. You have to fight this!” You pleaded. You couldn’t stop crying.

“Y/N!” You whipped your head to see Lydia and Mason approaching you. Stiles took your distraction as an advantage, rushing forward, full charge, the collision of your bodies was enough to knock you off balance. You slipped on your feet falling on your back.

“Stiles...” You whispered out in pain. You watched him slowly hover over you looking at you as if you were prey. Your eyes widened fearing the worst to come.

“No!” Lydia screamed, she was running to you as fast as she could in her heeled boots. Mason watched in terror as you screamed out in agony. 

You didn’t know what was happening. It felt like a blur. You felt a tremendous amount of pain in your chest, your senses were going numb. You were going in and out of an unconscious state of mind. Then everything seemed to go dark. Stiles had finally stopped, his brain slowly starting to process what he just did. His claws were dripping with blood. Your blood. His eyes went back to their original chocolate brown. He hesitantly brought a hand to your face caressing it softly. His eyes trailed down to the gory sight of your chest and stomach covered in claw marks. His doing. He let out a shaky breath as his eyes found your face again. His hand hovering over you, not wanting to further touch you, but his heart was trying to reach out for you

“Y/n? Y/n, hey, please wake up.” He whispered. “Y/n, please!”

“Stiles!” Scott’s voice rang out like an echo. Footsteps could be heard beating down the hall, growing closer to the messy sight of you laying still in Stiles’ arms.

“No, no, no! Y/n!” Stiles yelled out. He brought you into his chest, rocking you back and forth and kissing your temple. Your head pulled back. Eyes closed. Your whole body was limp. You were practically weightless. He could no longer hear your heart beating.

“No, baby, I’m sorry, I’m so sorry.” He choked up. “Open your eyes, let me see them again, please...” He weeped.

Scott, Malia, Liam, and Hayden didn’t hear the rhythmic beating in your chest no more. You were gone. Lydia was on the floor weeping for you.

Stiles had a feeling that someone was going to end up hurt, he knew the risks of the supermoon, but he didn’t think you were going to be the casualty of tonight, nor did he think that he would be the one to take away your life. Sirens could be heard from a distance. It wasn’t the ambulance though, it was Stiles’ father and Deputy Parrish.

“Stiles...” Sheriff Stilinski ran up to his son, his gaze stopped on you. “Oh god...Is she?”

“Yeah,” Lydia responded.

“Oh god…” Sheriff Stilinski ran a hand down his face. It was bad enough he was dealing with all the supernatural stuff, but to see you, his son’s girlfriend lying dead in his arms was worse. He saw you like his own daughter and wanted to keep you safe, but then again no one was ever safe in Beacon Hills.

“I killed her dad,” Stiles muttered. 

“Stiles-” His dad started.

“No! She’s dead because of me. She’s dead!” He shouted out. All gazes suddenly fell on him.

Everyone knew what would happen if they ever took an innocent’s life. They’ve heard the stories. They knew the outcome. They knew how Derek ended up.

“What?” He cried out. 

“Stiles…your eyes, they’re blue.”

Fyodor's downfall.

This is just going to be a fairly quick one, but I have some points to make about the whole "chess game" that is Fyodor and Dazai's bullshit lol.

As we all know, despite how similar Dazai and Fyodor appear to be, they are parallels to each other. Dazai is going to these lengths to save the ADA and Yokohama, and innocent people. There's really nothing in it for him. Fyodor, on the other hand, is going to these extrenuous fucking lengths all to qipe the world clean and have a blank slate, a world without ability users; this is for his own gain. Though we don't know his motives or reasoning behind why he's doing what he's doing, we do know that he benefits from this situation. Not only does he obtain benefit, but his god complex allows him to uphold the belief that he will succeed no matter the situation. Dazai, who he sees as a formidable opponent, is currently on the lowest floor, crawling, bleeding and dying. He sends Chuuya down there to him, knowing that Chuuya can easily overpower Dazai as he is in a weak state and is in no condition to be fighting back against anyone. Fyodor knows this, and sees this as the end to their longstanding feud. Obviously, this isn't the case, because Asagiri is not just going to kill Dazai off here (fucking hopefully). But, this here is Fyodor's downfall; his hamartia. He is so fixated on the fact that he will overcome any situation, and is so sure of himself, that it blinds him. This will become important. Because unlike Dazai, who is being dragged through the mud and fucking dirt yet is still determined, Fyodor has only been close to death one time. And even then, it wasn't nearly as intense as Dazai and Sigma's situation. He doesn't look as assed as Dazai does when he realises what's going on. However, Dazai has a great talent of thinking up before and on the spot for how to get out of unprecedented situations. Fyodor, however, we haven't seen him think on the spot to get out of a sticky situation, because he hasn't been in one yet. He foresaw Dazai trying to drown him and Chuuya and had Chuuya break the rubble. He didn't fight back against the soldiers when they arrested him. Yes, he was completely shocked, but eventually started smiling because he knew that Dazai was not to be underestimated.

However this is exactly what he's doing.

Not only is he underestimating Dazai, he's underestimating Dazai and Chuuya's relationship, and is sending Chuuya straight to Dazai, which, once again, will be his downfall due to his inability to understand human and complex emotions.

Dazai is determined, but not cocky. That is Fyodor's downfall; the fact that he thinks he's better than anyone. But, Dazai has some sense of being humble when it comes to serious situations. Even as an exec, we never saw him EVER talk about his own achievements or how well he'd done, because he didn't want to be one in the first place. We see him trying to ask Oda for his job lmao. When Higuchi and Gin were watching him, he knew about it, found them, then was like "well yeah i made the fucking surveillance methods" but not to be cocky or "oh look at me!". He said it because he was answering her question. Yes, we see his self-confidence when he's talking to women, or being dramatic, or exaggerating small things and being whimsical, but always in serious situations, he never boasts. when Kouyou was in the ADA, he says "has there ever been a prisoner who didnt talk when i was the one asking the questions?" not to boast or show off, but to instill fear into Kouyou, which it did, because he was right. But, Fyodor on the other hand is calm and laid back, but because he's so calm and laidback and doesn't expect anyone else to best him, thats going to be his downfall. His inability to understand human and complex a emotions and his narcissistic personality and his god complex. He's underestimating the relationship between Chuuya and Dazai, and the "absolute trust" (as the book says) they have between one another. He knows that Dazai is a formidable opponent, yet he still underestimates him and expects nothing more than what he has given him, because we're seeing Dazai lose. This is a first for us. And, you'd expect it to be a first for Dazai, but as we know, he's already lost far too much. He can't lose anymore. He won't lost anymore. But now he's fighting for his life because there's still nothing left to lose, except now there's Chuuya, the ADA, and now Sigma. And he wants to protect them all. Also, some people in the PM (Aku, Kouyou, Hirotsu, Gin, Higuchi, etc. I don't think he gives a rat's ass about Mori but hey.) and Yokohama in general. He's not doing this because it's his job and hes obliged to, he's doing it because he cares about the others, and stands to uphold Odasaku's final wishes. Fyodor is going through all this to create a better world (selfish reasons) because he doesn't like ability users (despite him being the character with the most kills due to his ability (excluding aku, chuuya, hirotsu, pm members basically, kyouka, kinda atsushi but not really. he doesnt kill uneless he has to.) ) idk man fyodors wild lmao.

Anyways, my point still stands. The parallel's between these two go far beyond just mental capacity and how smart each of them are, and their predictive abilities, or their unempathetic attitudes towards life. This is where they differ, however. Because unlike when he was in the PM, Dazai has grown fond of the people in his life. The only people he really had in the PM to care for were Oda, Ango and Chuuya. However, he lost all of that in such a short amount of time. And one of them, arguably the most important aspect in his life, he lost permanently. And now he's faced with the possibility that he can lose one of the few people he has a strong bond with, and he's doing everything in his power to keep that.

Fyodor is just using people to his own gain, not giving two shits about the outcomes and only what he can get out of it; he's playing his pieces carefully and planning his moves flawlessly. And it seems like he's currently coming out on top. But, there are some holes in this plan that he didn't plan for; Sigma and Chuuya. Sigma, who was originally his pawn, has became Dazai's, except Dazai isn't using him like Fyodor. Yes, he's beneficial to Dazai's plan, but that's not all Dazai sees for him. Because for all Dazai's similarities to Mori, he doesn't want to be like him and go down the route of using people and manipulating them to better his own game. Fyodor on the other hand is an unfeeling demon, prepared to go for any measures to make sure that his plan is enacted as he envisioned.

And this is where he's a bit fucked. Because he's fairly vain in the sense that he holds such confidence in his own ability to come out on top and succeed in his plans, he's not really associating with anything else because to him, it looks like his plan is going along smoothly.

However, we'll see how that goes over with Chuuya and Dazai's reunion.

Ah, sorry, this was a bit longer than expected and honestly it's probably just a bunch of bullshit. I've had a bit to drink tonight and I'm very tired but I just wanted this out there.

It’s been a hot minute since I’ve played MM but I was thinking of ray’s ae today. Specifically the scene where V drugs them with the sleeping gas.. it’s a little funny to think about it with my oc. She’s been trained to hold her breath for a long time. I can imagine V feeling awkward if she were in the scene just glaring at him as the rfa drops one by one (held her breath when Saeran told her to) bc this wasn’t how it was supposed to go??? lol

Jihyun Kim is trying so hard at that moment to be a villain. He thinks he has no choice but to commit himself to Rika, to that promise he'd made to her long ago, and even if he doesn't see himself as capable of loving her again, he did love her once, and he told her he would do whatever he could to take the brunt of her devil... alone. As long as he was the only one to burn in the end, he saw that as the path he had to take for their promise. Even though, he was close to realizing that the promise he made served neither of them any good.

He knows he can only "protect" Rika if he goes along with her plan to have a family that can never leave her side. He knows that means he's got to turn the boys over to Saejoong Choi as pawns, for all of them... to become pawns. He wants to protect everyone without stopping to look in the mirror and realize, "I'm not protecting anyone, I'm hurting all of us. Rika and I are hurting ourselves and everyone else by doing this."

He doesn't stop to think it through, he just goes for it, and there are tears in his eyes in that CG with the smoke bomb. He thinks he can be a villain but he's a horrid liar. So, God, if you were able to hold your breath AND open a window while Saeran is unaffected, you might be able to inform the guards and get someone to grab his butt and talk some sense into him before he tries to go beyond how far he's fallen at that point.

The story would have a different angle if we could hold him down and make him confront his demons right away. It'd be great if the RFA... no, if you were able to protect Jumin from passing out, he'd be the one to wrangle Jihyun just as hard as you or Saeran could. All three at once would overpower Jihyun's desire to bury his head in the sand.

Thaumcraft thoughts again but this time I'm thinking gameplay rather than lore. Comparing 4 and 6.

To start off, 6 is obviously unfinished. This alone means in a comparison w/ no addons 4 wins without a doubt.

Still, even without addons there are interesting points to make here based on what we saw in thaumcraft 6 and what we might have seen if azanor didn't fall down a well or whatever.

Fundamentals: The first tab of the 'nomicon is far more straightforward, and much less likely to give a new player an aneurysm as soon as they open the book. The only part of this I dislike is how long it takes to get to golemancy. The research system is explained on this tab, but we'll save that for last.

Auromancy: Auromancy in 6 is far more fleshed out than in 4. Plus, I personally prefer the casting gauntlet to wands. It feels much more thaumcraft, and less fairy tale magic. You're using your gauntlet to force the world to your desires. It's badass. And the modular focus system allows you to accomplish so much more. The excavate focus in 4 is a joke. It's slow, the range isn't great and it doesn't do enchants. It makes you feel sad and wet and pathetic. In 6, you make a plan silk touch excavate lvl 2 focus and you tear out 5x5 blocks of raw stone. You feel like a thaumic god, shaping the world to your desire. Is it balanced? Absolutely not. Having auromancy draw from the chunk-based vis system is hilariously broken. Vis cost doesnt matter because you move 8 blocks over and all your magic is back. But so much in thaumcraft is underpowered for the required time and effort compared to other mods, that it's nice to feel powerful for once. Ofc its limited by the small amount of effects in base tc6, but we're going to discount that for fairness.

Golemancy: The tc6 (and possibly 5? idk I never played that version) version of this mechanic is much more useful and interesting. Making golems is a pain in the ass now but theres so much more depth with the customization system. And not having to make a new golem for each task in your process makes life much easier. Though it must be said with how cheap golems were in 4 you could get a golem-based farm up and running much faster. It suffers in some areas, combat golems being pretty much useless except as bodyguards, in which case they try their best ig.

Artifice: The new arcane bore is slightly less expensive and clunky, but it's still ass. Splitting artifice and infusion was an excellent decision. The vis generator is a great addition, though it feels simultaneously underpowered and overpowered - it's basically free, but the generation is so bad you need a few to get the same power as an IE windmill and you'll burn through the aura eventually.

Infusion: Again, splitting this into it's own category is common sense. There are a few interesting new things in this tab: the verdant charms, especially the feeding one, are excellent QOL. The stabilizers and upgrades are good too, but I dislike having to purposefully destabilize an infusion to unlock the research, especially as its essential for what little endgame there is in base. I think the eldritch and void stone altars are new in this version, but they're unobtainable in base.

Alchemy: Tubes work better now. It's a fun time. The transducers are better tho, and can easily trivialize essentia organisation. Hedge alchemy I think is also new, and it adds some nice utility. Aversio is a nicer name than telum and no one liked Arbor anyway.

The Eldritch: Lol. Lmao.

And finally, Research:

WHAT DO YOU MEAN I HAVE TO STOP RESEARCHING TO GO MAKE A DAYLIGHT SENSOR? OR GET A PHIAL OF AN ASPECT ONLY FOUND IN SHOES? OR WAIT FOR A SPECIFIC PHASE OF THE GODDAMN MOON?? WHAT DOES THIS HAVE TO DO WITH WHAT IM ACTUALLY RESEARCHING?

It's somehow simpler and infinitely more tedious than the tc4 mechanic. At least that was a minigame, albeit a tedious, frustrating game that required multiple thaumonomicon dives (or, yk, an online tool). It also doesn't make sense. Nothing I'm doing here relates to what I'm trying to learn. In 4, the research pattern often had fun nods to what you were actually doing, like having Venenum in a research about poison, or linking all the primals for a late game research. Celestial observations suck. I sleep at night I'm not gonna grab my scribing tools and paper to scribble a drawing of the moon. MC Eternal lets you buy curiosities, which just makes everything so much nicer.

Moving on.

In terms of things I would have liked to not be left behind in 4, firstly I'd like my goddamn outer lands please. Also centivis, but without nodes it really wouldn't make sense. Tbh the whole chunk based aura system is a bit meh, it breaks a lot though it is convenient.

I was going to discuss addons in this post but this is already really long and I'm tired so I'll save that for another day.

I don't really know which of my posts this directly pertains to, so I will just assume it's because I'm generally pro-Elriel. I do like Lucien as a character though, I just simply don't ship him with Elain.

Knowing myself, this will end up longer than intended since this did spark a bit of reflection for me, so I will try to stay as relevant and short as I possibly can 😅 So, to actually answer your Ask...

1. Ehm, it's not the headache powder he's masturbating to 😆 It's who gave it and what it might imply: that Elain sees him too, as well as the hope and possibilities of her liking him back after him being in love with someone else for 500 years who never returned his feelings. Hopefully, you've had the experience of fantasizing about a crush sometime? Sometimes feelings can be so consuming that one's fantasies simply strays to the explicit. We wouldn't have the ACOTAR books if it wasn't for those kind of fantasies. Also, in no way do I find Elriel "full of passion" since they haven't even got a chance to act on said passion - which is why Azriel chooses to please himself through thoughts of her instead of actually going down to a pleasure hall and a series of other women and the consequences of that... Which for you is more healthy? Are we going to ignore the times Nesta and Cassian masturbated to the thought of each other too? I don't even want to go down the path of what Nesta did in the start of her story (nor about her very particular "daydream" at that) because she thought she didn't deserve Cassian... Though I think it's what led to Nesta and Az having such a great understanding of each other too, btw 😊

2. I think Azriel knows of the consequences of what will happen (he should at least be old enough to know lol) which is why he's trying to avoid Elain and acting on his feelings for her. He knows what a mating bond implies. But he's questioning why he didn't get the third sister because he's clearly feeling a sort of pull towards that third sister specifically (not necessarily implying a bond here). He just hasn't planned for what will happen if Elain actually acts on/chooses him, because he doesn't think she will and because he doesn't think he deserves her. I don't think he'd ever kill Lucien just because; but what I think he asserts is that if it were to come to it, he would have the right to defend himself, Elain's choice, and be the one to walk away from it (remember Az vs Eris+Beron at the HL meeting and who overpowered who? + Feyre musing about Lucien in comparison to the Illyrians?) so it's not Lucien he's worried about. I'd think he'd even let Lucien win just to avoid whatever it might cause Elain and because he has enough self-loathing and insecurities for it. But I reeeeeally doubt it will come to that, since it doesn't feel like Lucien's too desperate or to keen on keeping the bond either. I mean, I can see him being upset, but he seems to feel equally "shackled" in the situation since he "can't even stand to be in the same room as her for more than two minutes" (ACOFAS ch. 18). From what Lucien's shown, he's been respectful enough about the distance between him and Elain, so I think, especially considering the connection of this plot to what his mother went through, he'd be respectful of what Elain chooses too - even if the hurt or bond might affect them both for the rest of their lives. I think he'd want true love for himself too, and not just a bond "that sometimes picks poorly[...] and is nothing more than some pre-ordained guesswork as to who will provide the strongest off-spring[...] not an indication of true, paired souls.". Also, they haven't even accepted the bond, so it's not really like Feysand level yet, and I'm not completely sure how that would affect one if the other were to die... I mean, Lucien hasn't even reacted or mentioned anything about what it felt like when Elain was taken... But someone else did 👀 I do hope that's explored in the next book somehow.

3. Ehhm... Well... Azriel questioned the Cauldron, not the Mother. Also to quote Rhys in ACOWAR Ch. 24: "Many mated pairs will try to make it work believing the Cauldron selected them for a reason". So it is the Cauldron being questioned here - and guess what CC3 confirmed 👀. I don't think Elain and Lucien are fake mates, but I'm open to the theories about it. I don't even want Elain and Azriel to be mates. I just like them together because their feelings have had a chance to grow more organically, so it feels more natural for Elain to choose him, and that Az will finally get chosen after all that he's been through (Mor + his family + the things he did for Elain etc.). To me, he's worthy. If she chooses Lucien, then I need a really good set-up for it - one that's even better than what Elriel already has imo. And most importantly, one without her losing her agency. I actually want Elain to choose to explore her bond with Lucien, just to see what it's like and what could be since it will create more angst 😆. I think she's slowly but steadily moving on from the Cauldron incident, enough to forgive him even though it wasn't directly his fault. But I don't think it too necessary, since I wouldn't want to be forced to interact, settle, or love someone I simply don't want to be with. I've personally been in that situation too many times. Love can surely grow, but it cannot be forced if it isn't there to begin with, whether or not you already have your heart set on someone else.

Lucien wants and deserves someone who (to quote himself from ACOWAR Ch. 24:) readily loves him "without question, without hesitation" and who will choose him back. Just like Jesminda did - despite the implications and consequences, and it was why he'd loved her. I want to see Lucien with someone who's a bit more like what he himself seem to prefer prior to the bond that "was thrown at him" - the kind of people he's consistently got along and chosen to be with. Elain is too polite and soft for him and he's known for liking people who snaps back, who teases and taunts him - like Feyre, who he got close to because she never balked from him nor from doing just that... And Vassa sounds similar to Jesminda in spirit (wild and free etc.) and he's actively choosing to live with her... Maybe Elain has some of those traits in her too, she seems to be growing some claws after all. But does she have to change herself just to fit into his type just because of their bond; or can she continue to stay in her essence with someone who already likes her for her even without a bond?

I do think Elain and Lucien can at least be friends and have a great understanding - they've both been dragged through everything after all (Elain with her sisters, Lucien with Tamlin, and both by the baddies obvi) and just tried to make the best out of everything despite both not being the most useful of people early in their stories, and both trying to rectify themselves. So they have that in common at least... And I think that's left room for the growth and healing that Sarah's pertained to and that they'll have to face and address in the upcoming book(s). So whether it is about Elain or Lucien, I believe it will be about Choice, and what they both equally want and deserve. Which I think is True Love - despite any bonds.

I feel like this has gotten absolutely too long, so I'll stop here 😵‍💫😅 I hope my answers suffices your questions 😊

My thoughts on Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League...

I recently have been playing Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League and thought I would share my thoughts on it.

I'll start off by saying that yeah the game is getting a lot of flak for various different reasons:

It being a live service title.

It being a part of the Arkhamverse.

The fact you actually kill the Justice League in the game titled “Kill the Justice League”, lmfao.

And finally the whole situation with Kevin Conroy and the fact that this was one of his last performances.

(As we know now it wasn't THE last performance he gave as Batman, he'll apparently be in part 3 of the Tommorowverse Crisis movies.)

I'll start off by saying that I actually did enjoy the game, it's certainly different from the Arkham games being that it is a looter shooter akin to say Destiny, but I didn't actually mind the gameplay and actually think it's rather satisfying once you've upgraded your character enough and get some cool weapons.

I played as Deadshot for the majority of my playthrough of the story, switching sometimes to other characters, especially Boomerang, and I find each is somewhat unique enough.

I really like each character's traversal but HATE the cooldowns, that's a mechanic I find especially annoying, like I want to fly or speed around the city without having to stop every once in a while, lol.

Anyways, shooting and blowing enemies up is pretty fun, especially with the affliction mechanic you get from Ivy, I love the freezing mechanic specifically because it's much easier to mow down enemies.

There's also Gizmo's vehicles which are ridiculously overpowered and I can't lie and say I don't love blowing things up with them, lol.

As for the story... it's a little undercooked, seeing as it is part 1 of a larger narrative, being as this is a live service game it unfortunately ends in a cliffhanger to set up future DLC content.

I think I would be bothered by this more if the DLC wasn't totally free, so instead I'm not gonna nitpick this aspect too much, as I said the DLC is free, if they had made me pay for it I would've probably been more cross.

I do think the world building in this game is really good, there's like remnants you can find of the citizens of Metropolis and what they were doing at the beginning of the Brainiac invasion that I found especially interesting.

Also Metropolis looks and feels amazing, it's probably one of the best open world designs I've seen in a video game, so Rocksteady definitely didn't skimp on the art design with this game.

There's also audio logs you can find about what happened to the League and it's particularly tragic and I think the entire cast of voice actors do a great job.

As for the main story, there's a lot to like and there's a lot to dislike.

Obviously one of the main gripes I see is that you actually kill the Justice League in this game, and... it doesn't bother me too much? I guess that's because I caught on to some of the hints they were dropping about the JL, and without going too much into spoiler-territory, I'll just say things aren't as they seem with them.

Now for the elephant in the room which is how the game treats the Arkhamverse and obviously Batman, considering this is one of Kevin's final outings as the character.

I'll start by saying that Kevin Conroy gives a fantastic performance in this game, he's great as an evil Batman and you can hear it in his voice, he was absolutely not held at gunpoint or anything to record his lines for this game, lol.

There's obviously some issues to be had with how it ends for his Batman, but like I said... not everything is as it seems, so I definitely don't think this is the last we'll be seeing or hearing from Batman in this game, that's all I'll say.

Also there's a tribute at the end for Kevin that's really heartfelt and it made me tear up a bit. 🥹

As for how they try to weave the Arkhamverse narrative into this game? I think it's a bit sloppy all things considered.

Like yeah the museum that Jack Ryder made is cool and all but you literally could've made this game not connected to the Arkhamverse with a few changes and things would've been fine, lol.

(Also I'm not too happy about Arkham Origins being discluded from the museum section, what is your problem with it Rocksteady!?)

The Arkhamverse itself is sloppy sure, and there's fair criticisms to be had about it, but I just don't see a reason why this game is set in that universe to begin with, I guess because Rocksteady thought people wouldn't be interested unless there were some connections to those games.

As for the game being live service, that hasn't entirely bothered me yet.

As I said the DLC is completely free.

And most of the live service stuff is for cosmetics.

If the game had made me pay for more than just outfits for my characters, I would've probably been more upset, so this game isn't really all that predatory with the live service elements imo.

(You also get some free cosmetics in-game for completing Riddler races, so that's cool.)

I do think it's a bit of a bummer that the game has to be always online to play it, but Rocksteady did say there is an offline mode coming soon.

Also I only had like a few connection issues, so it never really interrupted my time playing all that much.

Anyways, I would say Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League is a solid 7/10 game, it has some flaws sure, but nothing that made me think the game is as bad as some people are making it out to be, I definitely have enjoyed my time playing it and am interested in the DLC going forward.

I certainly hope it lasts longer than most live service games, but you never know with these titles unfortunately, either way I still think you all should give it a try while it's still going!

Ooh, I’ve been dying to ask you, do you remember when you first thought up Eva? Did you have any idea she would explode into the fandom the way she has? I swear she’s canon to me now!!

I came up with her in early 2021 when i was so bored during the pandemic that i was watching everything on netflix. It was the first three seasons of Peaky, the Dance of the 41, Dynasty, and a documentary about Benito Juarez' presidency that mentioned the Batallion of Saint Patrick who were catholics who deserted the us during the mexican american war.

i spent about half of 2021 saying i won't write an oc for this, I'm not even english and i haven't even finished it (i was in s5 by then, but the idea of Eva came when they took what little personality Grace had in s1 and reduced to her to Mrs. Planky Shelby in s3) but then i saw Oka Giner (Eva’s first fc) in La Venganza de las Juanas and said this is Eva (which then was short for Evangelina)

Other inspirations for her were Morticia,Eva (who is the femme fatale of a 1920s mexican film called la tigeresa) who pretends to be poor to seduce a lower class man only to leave him in the dust and drive him insane, and Dolores del Rio.

I had no clue she'd be this popular as ocs of color hardly get readers as a white oc does and frankly, eva is a bit of a mary sue given how overpowered and liked by the canon characters as i made her lol. Eva's popularity was a surprise even if like every fic writer we dream of the fic taking off to great heights.

#1 jake + hyunjin

these two have such compatible placements, i was surprised.

+ scorpio and pisces are soulmate material. their sun signs make them both the most sensitive members in the group, and very emotionally intense. hyunjin would be a great listener for jake. he'd validate and understand his strong feelings, not judge them and vice versa. they could have great and lengthy conversations about things like dreams or poeticly discuss what they think the meaning of human existence is (i can just picture this so well i'm dead). it'd go on for hours. jake's scorpio sun does make him more down to earth and realistic, so he could help hyunjin get his head out the clouds sometimes. jake's strong drive could also help hyunjin in being more practical and realizing his dreams. they could both fill each others weak spots while still remaining very understanding and empathetic. they'd accept each other just the way they are and feel very comfortable around one another.

when it comes to their inner world, their stark differences could either attract or oppose each other. jake has his moon in pisces, therefore is more disorganized and messy emotionally, he can learn a lot from hyunjin's virgo moon's more strict, disciplined and serious way of approaching his emotions.

- if these two go out to eat together and they got given the wrong order, it might take them half a century to call out the waiter for it. in the end it'd probably be jake speaking up but it'll be incredibly awkward. they'd both worry if they were too strict and still tip the waiter a lot more than they deserve lol. jake could also become too overly intense for sensitive hyunjin sometimes. if the two fight, jake would probably be the more overpowering one. as a result, hyunjin would get very hurt and withdraw quietly into his own world, which would make jake feel awful about himself. yet, he'd struggle approaching hyunjin out of fear of making himself vulnerable and show his emotions. so it'd basically take them ages to make up. hyunjin would also go crazy over jake being so disorganized sometimes. kinda made me remember jisung and hyunjin's roommate dynamic. jisung is a pisces moon and very messy, which naturally encourages hyunjin to not keep his surroundings neat as well. (example is all the empty shampoo bottles in their shower as noted by changbin lmao) also the infamous not hearing the alarm problem with hyunjin, jisung isn't the most helpful in making him overcome that. i quote "i use the room with han and we both get up late." same thing would probably happen with jake, lol.

#2 sunghoon + jeongin

jeongin and sunghoon are another pair that'd make a great match.

+ as aquarius and sagittarius suns, they have strong opinions, a rebellious streak and can be the life of the party. they can bond over their out-of-the-box and rather unconventional ways of thinking and more quirky and "weird" ways. both jeongin and sunghoon aren't overly emotional or sensitive, so jeongin can definitely handle sunghoon's occasional bluntness when having conversations. they both value freedom and independence, so there wouldn't be much attachment between them at all. both of them are also very honest and straightforward. it'd be a very free and light-hearted friendship with no pressure or grudges.

their moon signs in aquarius and leo also make for a potential opposites attracts pair. they're both social people who enjoy group environments, but while jeongin has more of a desire to stand out in the crowd, sunghoon prefers the feeling of belonging. still, sunghoon will admire jeongin's occasional fearlessness, since he himself aims to go against the grain sometimes.

- these two could clash by being very stubborn. if they ever get into heated discussions, which is absolutely ought to happen, neither of them will give in and stand stuck by their opinion till the end. they could also encourage each other's more impulsive decision making ways and end up doing some regrettable stuff. like, i really see these two discussing something for way too long with either no concrete conclusion since they're both so "my way" and or them ending up doing the weirdest thing impulsively that can definitely backfire later, just because it seemed right to them. in the end, it'll probably be jeongin who confidently makes the decision and his ego will be immensely hurt when realizing he was wrong. sunghoon can also easily see jeongin as a too hot-headed, egocentric and dramatic at times, while jeongin could struggle relating to sunghoon's overly emotionally detached attitude.

#3 sunoo + seungmin

though their moon signs could clash, seungmin and sunoo also have the potential to enjoy a sweet friendship. + sunoo's watery nature blends well with seungmin's more levelled earthiness. although seungmin is a lot more logical and head-based, he also is sensitive to his surroundings and has an eye for detail. he's a natural healer and has a very reassuring effect on his friends and loved ones, which can be of great advantage to sunoo who is easily hurt. seungmin can also help him whenever he's overwhelmed emotionally and show him practical ways to fix his problems. especially with seungmin having his moon in cancer too, i can just imagine sunoo truly appreciating his non-judgemental and understanding attitude, whenever he'd get lost in his emotions.

they can both be very selfless and generous when they like someone, so they can easily become each other's sources of comfort in times of stress. they both have strong morals and are naturally righteous people, they would respect each others point of views a lot and have interesting conversations. they're also both homebodies and would probably have cute little movie nights together.

- although sunoo's character is very cancer-like, his moon in aries makes him rather impatient and direct as well. seungmin and his peace-loving cancer moon could find sunoo to be too uncaring and selfish sometimes. i can imagine him almost getting confused over sunoo's duality between being incredibly soft and sweet, but also overly hot-headed and at times reckless. "nah you literally just cried on my shoulder over someone calling your outfit ugly, why would you scream at me for not doing the dishes now?" type of thing. sunoo can be very all over the place with his emotions, while seungmin is very calm and calculated. although he can be just as sensitive, he has more control over what he lets out. whereas sunoo easily explodes with whatever emotion has taken over him.

least compatible pairings

#1 jake + changbin

these two really don't match at all, in neither their sun nor their moon signs lmao.

leo and scorpio suns are both extremely opinionated, yet completely opposite in energy. they will rarely meet eye to eye and fail to really understand each other's stance on many subjects, since they're both also very stubborn. arguments will last for ages with these two and will probably end with no resolution. jake is more on the introverted, intense and emotional side, whereas changbin is a very sunny, outgoing and warm guy. the two just won't be able to find a common ground. changbin will think jake is way too moody and jake won't like changbin being so overly controlling, since he prefers being the one in control. changbin is a double leo and therefore a lot more aggressive and louder than jake, whose receptive pisces moon could get crushed by the skz members' energy. it could also make him surrender to changbin's ways at first. however, his scorpio sun stands in the way of him forcing himself to alter his attitude for long. he'll be too proud. i can really see jake smiling charmingly (that man has a gorgeous smile) and adjusting pretty well at first, but after a while becoming overwhelmed and uncomfortable with changbin's boisterous personality.

#2 niki + felix

another difficult duo, in both their sun and moon placements.

sagittarius and virgo suns have very contrasting and clashing approaches to life. felix can't really understand or relate to niki's more spontaneous and free-spirited ways. he overthinks everything to its tiniest detail and can easily get lost in his thoughts over the future. niki tries to not take everything so seriously all the time and is a lot more carefree. he'd probably think felix needs to let lose a little and think he's too uptight sometimes. if the two ever went out to eat somewhere, felix would likely go over the menu 20 times while niki probably already started enjoying his meal, rolls his eyes and tells him to hurry up. felix's moon in aries also makes him more assertive and prone to angry outburts than niki, whose pisces moon makes him extremely sensitive and pretty easily hurt. if the two ever fought, it'd probably result in a sulking niki and a frustrated felix. although the skz member is also very sensitive, he has problems dealing with people of too emotional nature. he'd approach niki, since he's a lot more confrontational, but the enhypen member would not give in until he overcomes the intense hurt. felix would get annoyed on the one hand, but feel bad at the same time, so he'd be extremely conflicted. tbh, both of them would just lose interest in each other and not be bothered to put in the work.

My first impression

Typical overpowered goofball that steals the protag's spotlight and who's likely to be interesting once his past gets revealed. Probably has a large part of the fandom having him as their or one of their favorite characters. Don't think he'll be mine tho (I always end up with favorite characters who are (mostly) the ones without a huge fanbase behind them 🥲)

My impression now

He needs a hug. He needs therapy. He needs to cry. He needs Takemichi.

More seriously, he's more complex and important to the story than what I've anticipated. He's just so detrimental to the story. From start to end he's tangled with it. He deserves that happy ending. If I think too long about his dynamic with Shinichiro I sob uncontrollably and ugly.

I love how trauma is depicted with him. It can get so much ugly despite one's unwillingness to be and one's best effort. He's a great character.

Favorite thing about that character

He has no power over his own fate. His life wasn't meant to last as long as it did and so when it continued even though it should've ended, it got set in stone as counterweight. He got cursed by the person he loved immensely and who loved him back immensely as well. He came back wrong and he wasn't aware of it. He's an antagonist despite himself. He was meant to be since the start and Kisaki helped to speedrun it but even without him Mikey would've sunk in darkness. There were clues about that since the start and I love that for him. He's literally cursed to ruin his own life (and lose his loved-ones). Talk about doomed lol gotta love a lil tragic man.

(I'm very happy he got his happy ending tho, don't get me wrong)

Also: he's got a blanket-plushie <33 he's irritable when he wakes up and that's relatable

Least favorite thing

Idk... I don't think there is one? Perhaps when he refuses to apologize because he doesn't see the point to it (in the hospital when visiting Pah's friend's girlfriend with Draken, when meeting Kazutora's father after drop-kicking him, ...) but that's just because it makes me anxious lol I can apologize a bit much

Favorite line/scene

It might be a bit cliché, but the whole Manila Mikey scene. It's when Mikey actually started to pique my interest. The whole 'I killed them' bit *chef's kiss* - I needed to know more asap and I knew I wouldn't and it was awesome.

Favorite interaction that character has with another

Mikey stealing Takemichi away for Christmas from Hinata made me chuckle and still do.

I don't think about the trust he puts in Takemichi that much but it does linger on the back of my mind at all times. It's very dear to me.

A character that I wish that character would interact with more

I wish we would've seen more of him with Izana and him with Senju. There are a bunch of others, but ultimately I wish his relation with Izana and Senju would've have more elements to it, more dwell on. Also where are the scenes with Kazutora and Mikey being content and happy, Wakui. Wakui. Wakui, I need them.

Another character from another fandom that reminds me of that character

Loosely, I'd say Ace from One Piece. Damn character smiling to hide their clinical depression

🤔What’s a story you’d love to write but haven’t even started yet?

AU where Shinichiro (19, living in 1999) and Takemichi (18-19, living in 2010) swap bodies between May 22nd and July 30th. They're both from their original timeline and so the connection cut when their timeline stops having the same course of event. And while Shinichiro lives through original timeline the same way he lived it in canon, Takemichi kinda forcefully got his life together (it's tucked together with tuck tape but he's making it work) because of when Shinichiro was living his life and is now way too attached to the Sano family (&Co) not to try to meet with Mikey from his time period (very bad idea). What could possibly go wrong with Takemichi from the start of canon trying to reconnect with Hinata, Mizo Five, Kakucho at some point bc I want him and S62 here, and saving Mikey when... When it's first canon timeline and they've never met?

It's a fix-it somehow; the time leaping powers plotline remains the same as in canon too, when it concerns Shinichiro (Takemichi's part of the story obviously gets changed)

I've so many thoughts about Nikolai in KoS and RoW. He was one of my most favorite characters in the grishaverse but the books didn't do him justice at all. He's dumbed down and reduced to just giving great comic one liners. I think there aren't much interesting male characters in YA fantasy now. I love that the stories are women-centric but that doesn't mean you can't write actually interesting male characters too you know? And the thing about KoS that irks me the most is that it was literally marketed as "Nikolai's duology" when really it was all about Zoya it feels like Leigh always does this lol S&B was heavily marketed with alarkling and KoS with Nikolai's name and both didn't deliver what they were expected too. I love that we have stories about all these badass girls but let men be interesting too please! Nikolai was so intriguing as a character, there was so much that could've been done with him instead he's a side character in his own book. Smfh. Would love to hear what are your thoughts on Nikolai and how his story is handled.

Shadow and Bone was a trilogy that was widely known as the typical cliche YA fantasy novel with a bad ending and a contrived plot, but even with that fact, there were still flashes of brilliance every now and again. Nikolai Lantov was one of those shining flashes. He was the middle ground between the irritating petulance of Mid Oretsev and the Darkling who alternated from compelling to moustache twirling.

It seems that after S&B, Bardugo looked at the reception of Nikolai’s character and took the wrong messages away from it. “Oh, it looks like the readers love Nikolai’s witty one-liners and snark! We need more of that.” Nikolai has genuinely compelling moments (sometimes small subtle moments) in the S&B trilogy and it feels like the duology didn’t really expand upon those earlier moments as they should have. Instead, he is overpowered by Zoya’s presence and is sidelined in his own narrative. A classic bait and switch where the character with the most potential got bonked on the head by the contrivance stick and had another character get powered up in their stead.

Regarding Zoya, I often think I should like her more than I do. In a number of ways, I feel similar to a version of Zoya on paper, but I can’t find it in myself to actually like her. Most of the time, I feel irritated that Zoya is Bardugo’s vessel for her in-text commentary as well as the persistent feeling that Zoya’s characterization is an attempt to correct certain flaws of the original trilogy. Because of this, I can help but feel annoyed whenever she speaks as it feels like nearly every piece of dialogue is underlined by the condescending attitude of the author. It makes her feel incredibly flat and it only highlights the duology’s conflict with the previous trilogy.
