43 books read this year! about 2/3rds of last year's number, but i fell off pace in summer and for the last two months and never actually have a target or care about my pace anyways, so 43 is a good solid number imho. as last year, full list with light commentary below, recs are bolded:

Neuromancer by William Gibson
The Browns of California: The Family Dynasty that Transformed a State and Shaped a Nation by Miriam Pawel (i am punished for my desire to learn more about the two governors brown's effects on the state of california with: family hagiography. should have known tbh)
Between Two Fires by Christopher Buehlman (SOOOOOO GOOD. apocalyptic/religious horror in 1350's france during the black plauge. for fans of the terror, and fans of people who are in love but for whom the love won't alwayshelp!)
The Mirror and the Light by Hilary Mantel (hilary ilu u were one of the greatest novelists of the past hundred years it was an honor to be alive at the same time as you. this could have been 200 pages shorter. ilu tho)
Did Ye Hear Mammy Died? by Seamas O’Reilly (short, sweet childhood memoir of the irish writer/comedian who, famously, tweeted that story about meeting the president of ireland on ketamine.)

Stella Maris by Cormac McCarthy (to be clear, if you are not a cormac mccarthy fan, these books will not make you his fan. they are very much about this man's incredible hopelessness regarding a world that has invented and used the atomic bomb. what can be redeemed, etc etc. i loved them, despite a major part of the plot being consensual sibling incest, they were beautiful and phenomenal, they were not light reading)

We Don’t Know Ourselves by Fintan O’Toole (really really really cool nonfiction about ireland since the 1950s, part autobiography, more parts cultural history of a very quickly changing nation. fascinating to read this within 12 months of finn's one man's terrorist, which was a very leftist history of the IRA, and keefe's say nothing, which was an only very slightly leftist history of the IRA that was most interested in like, how compelling the history is (not a drag on it). o'toole not as big on the IRA as the other two! understandable!)

The War That Killed Achilles by Caroline Alexander (for all fans of the history of the story of the illiad!!! short and passionate!)

An Oral History of the New York Commune, 2052–2072 by Eman Abdelhadi and M. E. O'Brien (some things about this book were fun, many were infuriating, absolute worst had to be the insistence that in the future: therapy would solve even more problems that it does today :))

Stay True by Hua Hsu (beautiful, deserves the pulitzer, not 100% my thing but still very good)

Demon Copperhead by Barbara Kingsolver (the voice was hard to get used to for the first 50 pages, but i ended up really liking this tbh. i've never read copperfield, so not sure if that improved the experience)
Crying in H Mart by Michelle Zauner
The Boys by Katie Hafner (a mistake to read this, but at least the twist was funny! there wasn't anything else in the book, but only a partial waste of time at the end)
Tomorrow and Tomorrow and Tomorrow by Gabrielle Zevin (finally read this, which has truly polarized my extended social circle, but i ended up liking it. i didn't always get what it was doing 100% of the time, and didn't so much feel compelled to find out, but i tore through it and will always be a sucker for a story about that doesn't fix you but does keep you alive. can see both sides of this debate)
American Overdose: The Opioid Tragedy in Three Acts by Chris McGreal (we have to kill every sackler. solid history of the epidemic. EVERY sackler.)

The Season by Kristen Richardson (half-baked history of the debutante social ritual. but, not like there's many other histories of the subject!)

Ramsey (picked this up following the opioid book, which discussed but didn't go deep on how the country's reaction to the opioid epidemic was so vastly different from the crack epidemic. put a lot of stuff into context lmao.)

cordelia <3 it's not her fault the final book in her trilogy was kind of a flop. she slayed it though... except for the love triange stuff that pissed me off an unreal amount you guys know you were there. but i love cordelia she's soooo protagonist... she's so remember that you can't save everyone remember that you have to try..... also her gay ally swag is unbeatable. she loves her gay friends more than she loves herself....

My final opinions on the quarry characters because why not
Laura: a bit trigger happy but shes badass and I love her. Scary women <3. Bestie still needs to understand the difference between calling and leaving a message. The most badass character, carried the team tbh.
Max: sweet himbo, I love him. He's doing his best. I love him and Laura and their scary strong woman x malewife. I loved his crop top fit and how much he cares about Laura.
Emma: I thought she was kind of mean at first but once she opened up I loved her. Girlboss. Wouldn't have flirted with Jacob and sent mixed signals. I ended up thinking she was really cool tho and I related to wanting to be entertaining and flamboyant for the sake of others.
Jacob: he's so, so stupid. I thought I'd hate him at first. But I think hes doing his best. He really liked Emma and he didn't know there were fucking werewolves. He has no critical thinking skills I love him. Seeing him cry and express his emotions as a jock was really cute and I liked that about him.
Abi: I wish she had more to do because she was so sweet and I loved her. I wish she had more scenes and was more useful to the team. My favorite tbh. I loved her little eeeeee and she was adorable the whole time. Plus I loved her style.
Ryan: this man does not deserve the hate he gets. I loved him and his relationship with Dylan. He has a monotone voice and doesn't understand sarcasm and same. And autistic comrade.
Dylan: also my favorite. He's literally so funny and carried the game. Every scene he's in is immediately better because of it. Him and Ryan have my whole heart. He actually cares and hides behind his sarcasm and me too tbh.
Kaitlyn: ALSO my favorite, she's so cool I love her. She has the one brain cell they all share. I trust her with my life. I like kinda mean short people who are the most badass in a group of tall people. She's so supportive of Dylan liking the same guy as her. The fact that every let's play I see calls her tiny is hilarious to me as me and Brenda Song are the same height.
Nick: I thought he was really sweet and funny and I wish we got more time with him before he became a wolf and we never see him again. Thought he was really cool honestly but he wasn't in the game enough for me to get as attached to him.
Travis: I still think he's unnecessarily creepy but I apologize for calling him so many names. He didn't deserve that he's just trying to protect his family and not get yelled at by his bitch ass mom.
Bobby: I think there was a lot of potential for him to be used more. I thought he was really funny and there was a lot of potential for him as a sloth esc character who is a good person who's just trying to help a toxic family that doesn't respect him.
Chris: I'm still sad we got so little scenes of him. I thought it would be cool to explore his father figure role at the camp and I thought he seemed like a good dude who cared about he kids and wanted to keep him safe. Wanted more content of him tbh. I thought he was really cool. Maybe it's just the daddy issues but I wanted more of the father figure man taking care of the children

OK SO I'VE WATCHED EPISODES 2 TO 4 OF SEASON 2 OF TOTAL DRAMA 2023
MAJOR SPOILERS UNDER THE CUT!!!!
I think these episodes were... fine. I think the third might've been the best one overall, i liked the challenge and it was pretty fun; especially seeing MK fucking cheating and the team's reactions. i think Ripper not interacting with his team is good actually, because he's funnier on his own or when he's crushing on Axel.
SPEAKING OF WHICH: i didn't expect for Ripaxel to win me over... at all? But i think it's pretty cute actually! I think it's funny seeing Ripper crushing on the girl that spent the entire previous episode trying to commit violence on him. He's ridiculous when trying to impress her in episode 2, their interactions in episode 3 were also fun (they managed to make a fart joke plot relevant! how??) and i really enjoy how in episode 4 the dude went out of his way to make something she'd like (the little poem he made her!). I REALLY don't think Ripper's interested at all in poetry so i think it's cute :D ALSO THEY'RE STILL IN THE GAME SO WE MIGHT SEE MORE FROM THEM. MAYBE IT'LL FULLY CONVINCE ME!!
Honestly i think it could've been worse! Could've been a whole lot worse! She could've been kissing Chase. That's all im saying.
What i do know is that Priya x Caleb is NOT gonna convince me. I genuinly do not care it's insane. they are just here to be straight and i don't think they'll convince me. (especially since im pretty sure Caleb just wants an alliance)
Fellas... we might be getting Rajbow divorce. Or at least an actual conflict in their relationship that they'll need to work throughout the season; i really hope they don't split up but also they might just split up over this and i am NOT READY.
I'll go over the eliminations + challenges before i go over my favorite aspect of these episodes: Chase getting booted second is amazing. Glad he's not here anymore and im glad Emma got to take her revenge on his dumbass. Im more mixted on Millie being kicked off this early? sure she wasn't gonna last until the end but the conflict between her team just felt! so! forced! Guys, Damien's alive, and he's FINE NEXT EPISODE CAN YOU GUYS CALM THE FUCK DOWN??? I know it was a breach of trust but she did it to win the challenge and it WORKED! And she got booted for it! Emma getting eliminated this early also kinda stings, especially the remarks about her gut feelings being wrong (but then they were right so like,,, what is your point). I do think her not being as good at reading people as she thought is a good conflict but i don't like how it's excecuted.
As for challenges: I think a straight up basketball one would've been cool (take notes, season rewritters!), but the basketball slides was pretty fun too. The sticky sap one is really fun too, it's got plenty of potential. the one in episode 4 is real eh, i would've preferred a straight up would you rather with a lie detector maybe? but oh well!
what i did like tho? MKULIA!!! I LOVE THEM BEING FRIENDS!!! THEY ARE FLERTING SM

we will singlehandedly convince everyone to put chase in situations I believe in us. and yeah he deserves to be put into so many situations.
another thing I think is fun about him in canon is that one part during S1 ep8? I think? where Emma tells him to play dead and he does this whole spiel about asking people to tell his mum that he never ate broccoli and his aunt helped him lie when he fed it to the dogs. like sir you couldn't have told her that at like any point in time? you never could've talked to her? she never would've listened? and he trusted his aunt or liked her more than his actual mum. like the whole interaction was so strange to me especially because it was just waved off like all the total drama lore drops. and his dying wish was just to communicate with his mum? yeah I know what he is (unwell)
I agree that chase not being an asshole for the fun of it and instead BC of his mental health is such a better interpretation. he's great angst potential for relationships and stuff and I think your point about chipper is so interesting because yeah. ripper parents canonically didn't care about him or his brothers but instead of becoming super dependant on others ripper prides himself on his independence and how he doesn't need others even tho he really does. they could be so unhealthy for eachother and also fix eachother. and chowie drives me insane because like. Bowie can actually help. he knows healthy relationships and he knows how to help but he has to drag chase into improvement. and what's with chase having the weirdest ship names lmao chipper and chowie
also his and Emma's relationship is such a thing like. I don't really have the words to explain it but chase isn't good for emma, if he was a better person it would be cute? idk if cute is the right word but if chase wasn't obsessive and insane I think it could've been a genuinely good relationship but because of the way he is I don't think it ever will be. even if he improves I don't think they're good for eachother!! his ass needs to have the consequences of his actions
and this is a good time to introduce my rarepair of chase X Wayne because I think so much of them. Wayne isn't very smart in the traditional sense but he is exactly what chase needs because he can set boundaries but still have healthy relationships with people and he cares about people so much. he is so good at expressing and handling emotions and he is so willing to care and wait for people to open up to him I am so insane about chase X Wayne. chayne? wase?
I have to break out word and write something soon because I am going to put that man through a fucking situation. he should be going through it. anon we are geniuses and have the most correct interpretations of characters ever

Hm. Thoughts
The Rajbow conflict ended how I thought it would but I wanted more. I mean you saw my dramatic ass post about it yesterday and then it gets resolved in like. 2 minutes. If Bowie’s going to stay another episode after the reveal then their make up should have been stretched out between them.
Merge is too early also. Have the stunk butts lose, 3-3 tie vote between Bowie+Raj+Wayne for Julia and Julia+MK+Ripper for Bowie. Julia stays because of winning more immunity the previous season. Bowie gone. Continue as normal.
Well, it seems that Mkulia getting out for cheating has passed. I’m on board with that. Though, if they aren’t the double elimination, that mean it could be Ripaxel or, disappointingly, Raj and Wayne again.
Damien is a dungeon and dragons player. Ily so much Damien. Love him getting the first immunity this season.
I like Julia scheming even outside the cheating. Speaking of, I like Ripper getting to participate before the teams merged.
I like Zee having more focus. Tho, every episode past episode 1 I think it’s his time to go. And then he doesn’t. So at this point I’ve accepted he’s winning a million dollars
Ripaxel made out ugly style all night. Axel’s only weakness is Ripper. I care for them.
Nichelle’s training off screen was stupid and her getting eliminated like that is stupid. (Three consecutive early game female boots with characters that had so much potential? Horrible). Not only is it dumb, it’s sad. The deal was fake, so she leaves with nothing. What was the point. It wasn’t even funny.
Not only is the Priyaleb plot being unjustly dragged out (there is no reason why Caleb would not have confirmed to Priya he wants an alliance by now), it’s also lost the only interesting part of it.
The reason I was tolerating this plotline was A. It was mildly funny and B. The fallout of Priya realizing Caleb doesn’t like her romantically. But now Caleb is starting to like her back! So both of those factors are out. Zee is gonna tell Priya tell Caleb doesn’t like her, she’s gonna run away and cry, then he’s going to tell her He Really Does Like Her! And then they’re gonna kiss and Priya will be voted out. Fucking boring.
Okay, to be somewhat fair to the writers, I like that the episode is starting to give them actual foundation for a relationship. I like them relating to having parents with too high expectations. I like seeing more of Priya’s “firsts”. A major part of her character is being denied childhood milestones. First season we saw her make her first friend. Now we’re seeing her first crush*. That’s a cute idea. There’s even some novelty to the winner falling for the first boot. But that cuteness and novelty is not enough for me to like this relationship. There was no build up to this. Look at Ripaxel, for the two episodes Axel was in the game, they have interactions in both, with episode 2 putting large emphasis on their dynamic. Despite not being an official couple, look at Mkulia, another pair of character this season. They interacted throughout the first season and episode 6 put major spotlight on their dynamic. Caleb and Priya? I can’t even tell you if she looked at him in the first episode. Maybe the following episodes could win me over for them, but I highly doubt it. If Priya had to have a hetero romance plot this season, couldn’t it have been with Damien? At least then it would have had set up from the last season. Or, how about not put this much time into the character who won last season and put it into characters like Emma, Nichelle, or Millie.
*I know having a first crush is not a universal experience. I am aromantic. I have never had a crush on anyone.

I was just thinking about the food I'm gonna be having within the next few days, and it got me thinking about 'cooking with chris' on the counsellors router in the game. I can't remember where it is. It might be in the kitchen? It's just their tasks, and cooking with Chris was on it. I remember you mentioning something about Chris cooking for Ryan in a scenario previously. So, what would he cook for him? Ryan is a bit of a picky eater in your canon, and Chris is pretty attentive to what he likes in both ASB and Gp, I'm assuming. I have no idea what Ryan would actually want to eat. Idk when Chris would make food for Ryan, but maybe later when the others are in their cabins or at the fire pitt? I liked that in GP, Chris took Ryan out to eat, even though it was spontaneous, and Ryan didn't want to go. There's just something about Chris looking after and proving for Ryan that's quite pleasing to me.
It'd be cute to imagine them sitting down together, just the two of them having a home cooked meal by Chris, and just enjoying it & eachothers company. Their complexities would make the situation interesting, too. Ahh, it's quite fun to imagine different scenarios. Although, I must say I am a bit stumped about how the next part will play out. I know Ryan's gonna do something, that's as clear as day, but it's Chris that's got me on edge, haha. You're quite good at setting the scene, the mood, and building anticipation. But yeah, it's not knowing how Chris will possibly react that has my brain in a knot. Especially because we only have Ryan's perspective, he doesn't know what we know. Meanwhile, Chris could be thinking, maybe planning and feeling anything, and we have no idea — and Ryan is clueless about it. Ahh, it's just so good! Haha, sorry I ended up talking about one thing, then talking about another the next.
my memory about the game is kinda rusty atm, but it’s not hard to see chris doing smth like that. esp bc he does come off as fatherly kind. he would want to teach the ‘kids’ how to cook for themselves. but picturing someone like, i dunno, jacob being in the kitchen is endless comedy to me. i don’t think, that he can cook for shit. or emma even. as for ryan, he surely can make smth edible. i imagine, that he’s the one, who made his sister’s lunch and breakfast for the majority of their lives, so it’s not like he cannot cook for himself. he prob just won’t bother doing it. he comes off as chips & soda, & whatever-else-i-can-eat-without-cooking kind of kid.
i think, that chris knows it, and would try to see what exactly ryan likes. he would start with smth simple like pancakes, bc most people love those. or maybe, he can make him some good ole toast and steak. or see if ryan likes some specific cereals. it would take him a bit to figure out ryan’s preferences, since it’s not like he won’t eat it, but he might not necessarily love it. it has a lot to do with his upbringing. i hc that his grandparents are pretty ‘conservative’, so i imagine that when his grandma cooks, it’s basically whatever she did for everyone, they should eat. food is food. kinda in a similar vein in how it prob was for chris too. naturally, he would like to avoid doing smth like that to his own kids, or ryan. but i picture, that ryan’s fav food be smth like apple pie or maybe a very sweet dessert, that people won’t suspect him loving, bc he’s all doom & gloom, so he must be into idk, energy drinks and tasteless food. but in reality, he likes sweets. mostly baked ones.
and yeah, ryan’s appetite is really bad in GP, tho it’s this way for a reason. he doesn’t know it yet, and since he had a tendency to low-key neglect his health, he doesn’t look into it too deeply. chris suddenly decided to feed him, on top of already paying too much attention to how often he eats, well, it was weird and a bit annoying from his point of view, i think. esp bc he legit didn’t want to eat anything, it cannot be helped. i also think, that since ryan isn’t used to being cared for by an adult to such an extent, it makes him feel slightly uncomfortable, bc he doesn’t fully know how to respond to it. besides, in his situation, he’s not a kid per say, he’s an adult too, even if young one. so his mentor buying him dinner would make him question things. like is this a friend's lunch. or does chris literally see him as a child, that he’s not.
as for the next part, all that i can say is that ryan literally sleepwalking into a lion’s den. or well, wolf’s one. GP generally be darker, than ASB, when it comes to certain themes. not only chris in GP is way less ‘noble’, but ryan also packs a surprise or two. and aw, thank you! i love the tension in writing. or well scenes, that make you wonder what and why, and if what you think will happen or not. horror/thrillers are esp good genres for it, and i kinda always try to keep the horror/suspense elements in my supermassive works. and it works very well with this game/pair too, bc chris is technically, an antagonist of the series. he’s a hungry wolf, even if he tries very hard to control his urges. and yup, i kinda really like how the reader will always know more, than ryan does. so certain things will make sense to you way more, than they do to him. i will prob make one chapter from chris’s perspective, bc after a certain point, shit gonna hit the fan hard and who knows what will happen. ryan certainly doesn’t. he’s about to bite more, than he can chew.
and no worries! i’m glad, that you still interested in that story, despite me taking a long break from it.

I just finished reading 'Sea Change'... It was— I don't even know how to describe how stunningly written it was! The care taken into crafting the story, to give the readers an entire movie with just words— it's amazing! Seriously, I could vividly see everything! Even little Hatori, looking like a tiny little Oikawa, I could picture Darling's crying face as they remembered everything leading up to that particular situation! It really did play out just like a beautiful, heartbreaking film in my head!

mikey knows he's in love with her, kakucho admits that he feels something for her (he's probably the only one to admit to himself that it's certainly not a healthy kinda feelings, but feelings all the same) sanzu and the twins definitely have an obsession, and there's a fondness there, but i wouldn't go so far as to call it 'love'.
whoa okay but choking and slapping? Now that’s terrifying for reader...I would have thought kaku might be a little better than the rest since he seems more calm and kinda looks out for reader? Also, I cannot imagine how terrifying sanzu’s bad day will be for reader since he’s already unstable
as i said kaku's fine on a good day, but not every day is a good day. he carries a lot of issues and guilt and maybe has slight abandonment issues (people he love tend to be taken from him) that make him a little possessive and rough at times.
sanzu's bad days mean the reader watching people die in awful ways before getting brutally fucked in/around/near their blood/bodies so yeah... not fun.

(i'm joking, we are cool :D thanks to your hornyposting about Nick i have watched LPs at all)
First of all, i gotta say that Russian dub doesn't suck completely, which is surprising, but it doesn't matter, because i watched everything in English anyway
Overall, i liked it! Back in a day me and my friends were obsessed with Until Dawn, so i was glad to found out that they released another similiar game, but with werewolves this time.
(I also have a disease called “i watch any interactive movie and than imagine Gotham as an interactive movie”. Can you imagine? Gotham? Interactive? WITH WEREWOLVES?)
My opinion on werewolves - i like the lore, i got really excited with all the references (THEY REFERENCED WOLFMAN). I think design is super neat and scary, tho i admit that this creature barely resembles the actual wolf. Pretty sure that animating transformation would be too expensive for the devs, but i really missed some good old bone-cracking and skin-stretching (this probably sounds creepy but i don't care, there is so few werewolf transformations in the media and i aggresivily cherish every single one of them)
My opinion on characters - i like all playable characters, except Laura, simply for suddenly appearing in the middle of the plot and making everyone else non-relevant. I know that it’s hard to make nine playable characters to have an equal amount of relevence, but c’mon. Too unbalanced and too overpowered, IMHO.
Ryan is cool, interesting choice for the protagonist, but i wish he wasn’t shoehorned by Laura. I also disappointed that there’s no way for him to survive the night without being infected - and if he’s infected he can’t be transformed anyway! There goes my “all characters are raging werewolves” dream run.
Kaitlyn is cool, but she doesn’t have a lot playable chapters, which surprised me.
Dylan is fun, and i think he has the most variety as a character in a alive/infected/transformed/dead ratio and being relevant to the plot.
Aby is cute. For some reason there’s no option for her transforming, or even being infected for too long, since Kaylee is killed in any playthrough - which is a shame, i thought her reaction to lycanthropy would be the most interesting. I guess it’s compensated by her interaction with infected Nick. I do think it’s ironic that she killed either by her love interest (Nick) or her best friend (Emma).
Nick... oh boy. Am i the only one who thinks he’s done extremely dirty? Nick is barely in the game, and half of his screen time he spends being asshole to Aby, and then later as a least relevant werewolf. He has only two options - alive as a werewolf or killed by Laura. Because of this i am not even sure what his character supposed to be. Such a waste. (I also think that Nick is the most pretty of them all. I also (x2) have to admit at this point that i am definitely attracted to tall Australians....)
Emma is okay. In my opinion she’s the most balanced character in the terms of personality - fairly grounded and knows exactly what she wants. She also has a pretty good variety as a playable character.
Jacob is okay. I just know that he was supposed to be the most unlikable of them all, but i can’t bring myself to dislike him, Jacob appears to be very insecure and self-aware for me - even if he is stupidly foiled all the chances to move from the camp in time. I saw a scene in which, if he’s infected closer to the end, right before transforming he will swallowed by his self-loathing, which i think is chilling enough.
Max is a good boyfriend, i guess. Besides that can’t say anything else. Does he even counts as a playable character, if he has exactly one scene, in which the only real choice is to kill or not kill him? And even that may not appear at all?
I was actually convinced that Hackett’s family are true villains of this game, but every guide says that it’s Elisa. I don’t care, i think the best ending is where they all are dead. I don’t hate Hacketts, but i don’t like them either. They have good intentions, but they are the one who fucked it up in the first place, releasing werewolf curse in the world, and they keep fucking up more and more by trying to fix their own mistakes. Travis is the only one who stands out as an actually interesting character. Bobby is okay because he’s not as malicious as the rest of the family. Chris is way too irresponsible for someone who’s supposed to be running a children’s camp and not letting his werewolf form maul everyone. The rest of the family are there, i guess.
Elisa, for me, is the most interesting character. The way she tries to influence both characters and the player to kill Hacketts is unnerving, and the fact that she is not neutral and has an agenda is really cool. For someone who is a vengeful ghost and, possibly, abused her little werewolf son to perform in her own freakshow... i still feel sorry for Elisa. In the end i guess Silas is the most tragic character, being mistreated by literally everyone.

Also its just now hitting me that they actually said "gay" multiple times without dancing around the word. I know shows are way more progressive than several years ago, but it still makes me feel so happy that two men can just be romantic and lovey-dovey on screen without it being a joke.

Literally tho, Chris mentions Duncan's parole officer in the first episode of the series and Duncan make multiple threats to the others and if memory serves he gets sent back to jail in All-Stars. On top of that, Duncan has mentioned multiple times in All-Stars that he met Mike (while Mal was fronting) when they were both in juvie. Plus everything with Izzy happened on the show soooooo

Wayne, Raj and Bowie were absolutely the highlight of the episode for me. I know they obviously were not the focus at all, but like I said it genuinely makes me so happy that gay characters can just exist and be treated like everyone else without being jokes or with some huge fanfare. And Wayne being so enthusiastic about supporting Raj for when he's ready to come out is the icing on top. Oh how far we've come since 2007.
Other than that, it seems like I was wrong about Bowie being the new Heather. He isn't exactly doing a whole lot besides some funny quips. In fact that's kinda all that's happening with everyone. Besides Emma and Chase, there's a substantial lack of conflict, even then that's not much and is one-sided. But this is only episode 4, so here's hoping 5 picks up something.

to conclude the mark blackthorn hate tonight. i like him when he talks to his siblings and then like never at any other time. i used to like him back when lady midnight was the only tda book but then lord of shadows ruined everything in regards to him, kieran, and cristina tbh. i can’t stand any of them. ok i love cristina i cannot stay mad at her when all she did was girlboss her way into a throuple with two twinks who are obsessed with her i cannot be mad about that genuinely. i do think she deserves better than them tho just because they do suck but hey if she’s happy i’m happy. if they stay obsessed with her it’s fine. but i cannot stand those men fr it actually reflects so badly on cassie that they’re such flop gay people and flop characters and a flop throuple. anyway this was about mark. i like mark when he talks to ty because that’s literally his baby brother, and i like him when he’s with jules because their whole dynamic makes me feel crazyyyy, but when he’s in a scene with emma i want him to be killed. and it goes without saying that in scenes with kieran i hope they both die. and then his scenes with cristina used to slay but i inevitably soured on them due to the whole flop throuple thing. we never should have called her out for not making tessa will and jem poly so she felt like she had to do poly representation in another book. because it was BAD when she tried. and i hope she never does it again she’s not good at it!!! thank god i don’t have to worry about that in twp because i know there’s no way even love for dru would bring ash and jamie together. and she’s probably not ending up with jamie anyway so who even cares. anyway i’ll shut up now peace and love. i wish tda had a better secondary romance

Okay hatchetfield zombie apocalypse au bc why not ("but tgwdlm is a zombie apocalypse" shh no that's an alien musical apotheosis and also this is won't be the exact same as tgwdlm)
This ended up being way longer than I thought it would and also kinda ramblely (is that a word??) oops. So read the rest under the cut
Okay this takes place in 2019
Emma and Paul are together, emam ofc suggests they going to her cooky reclusive biology professor
This isn't the apocalypse Henry excepted and he doesn't like that, but hey he still prepped for an apocalypse so he's safe
Since this isn't a musical apocalypse and it'd probably be pretty hard to get money off of someone during a zombie apocalypse, so he's currently not trying to murder anyone
He let's Emma and Paul stay with him
But then Emma is like "hey you have room do you think my nephew, brother in law and his gf could stay with us? The gf's a nurse she could be helpful!!"
He eventually agrees
Then Paul's like "hey my coworkers are kid dumb asses there's know way they're surviving an apocalypse on their own can they stay with us? And also one of them has daughter and the other has a little brother (cough cough HCB) them too?"
And then Hidgens ends up agreeing to that, and then Alice and HCB are ofc both like "wait hold on our friends-" (ie: Deb, Ziggs, Grace Chasity (this would be HCB's friends not Alice's ofc), Cineplex kid (because I said so) Ethan (also Tony, my beloved) Lex and Hannah (once again, because I said so, do we seem them interact? No, but they're friends now)
And Hidgens at this point is like "well fucking fine I guess so! Bring em here we have a bunch of ppl already so why not!!"
All of these people, living under one roof (albeit a very big roof) is ofc chaos!
I'd imagine ppl kinda stay in groups a bit tho. Like the teens stay with each other for the most part. CCRP gang hangs out together most. Ect.
Still, very chaotic. The teens (really mostly Deb, Ethan and Lex) causing plenty of trouble. The adults all being dumb asses. Plenty of arguments between Bill and Ted ofc. And probably several arguments between the nerdy prudes (grace, hcb and cineplex) and the other teens. Probably one fight between Alice and Ziggs but it gets settled quickly and they figure everything out and clear the air and become good friends.
I mean you think this amount of ppl, particularly this certain group of ppl, are going to be well organized durning the apocalypse? Hell no!
Hidgens is the only one that actually understands shit about apocalypse, he's the one who prepared! (once again: although for the wrong one) so he's constantly having to be like "no we can't do that that's dangerous!!" Emma, Alice and Lex are the only other really competent ones.
Hidgens ofc spends his time trying to find a cure, Emma helps him. If life ever goes back to normal she has an automatic A in his class for the rest of college just for going through this shit and helping him.
Tom, Bill, and Tony are the dads. They're obviously dealing with the kids. But the do mainly try and focus on their own kid because... That their kid ofc they care about them the most. But they try to take care of the other kids too.
Bill has a rough time connecting with anyone besides Alice. But Grace was always nice to him church so there's that. And ofc Alice has gf, a gf he doesn't like a ton but now he's very much stuck with so he might as well try and get along with. They eventually do.
Tom ofc like I said cares most about Tim. But after him the next he cares most about are CaliforMIA gang. Lex and Ethan were his students (I know it's not confirmed that Ethan was one of students but he is now bc I want him to be), probably his favorite students, and that Lex's little sister who's only a few years older than Tim, ofc he's also gonna care a lot about them.
Tony also cares alot about Lex and Hannah, that's his son's gf and her little sister, once again, ofc he'll care about them alot too.
Becky absolutely cares about all the kids a ton!! She's a nurse who works with kids, she's very nurturing and mother like. She cares for and about them all fairly equally but Tim is her favorite because... Well that's her bf's son and she's known him the longest out of any of the kids ofc. Lex and Hannah end up loving Becky alot because she's so much kinder and sweet than their biological mother.
Before the apocalypse Ted took care of HCB, now he's still taking care of him ofc. Ted doesn't want to be taking care of any of the kids besides his brother. He wants to drink and party and stuff. I mean it's the apocalypse so why not? But he ends up taking care of Grace and Cineplex quite a bit too. This happens not bc others aren't taking care of them, they are being taken by the other plenty well (like I said the dads and Becky all care for all the kids they just have favorites) but because they see HCB going to Ted for almost everything and Ted doing stuff for/helping out HCB so they're like "well okay guess we'll go to him too" He's not happy about it. He already has to deal with his obnoxious little nerdy prude bother and now there's two more? But part of them reminds him a lot of himself when he was younger. Maybe that's why he doesn't like them, or also maybe that's why secretly likes them a ton?
Hidgens, Emma, Ted, Tom and Lex are the ones that go out most often because they're the only who are really able to fight off the zombies and stay safe a stuff (okay Ted not so much as the others but they bring him anwyay cause Henry's like "he looks like he can use gun or something" and Emma, Paul, Bill and Charlotte are all like "this is a horrible idea don't bring him" but they do anwyay. He doesn't kill any of the others so hey why not keep bringing him? Besides if something goes wrong they can use him as bait or throw him to the zombies to get them off the rest of the group /hj)
Other ppl in Hatchetfield exist of course and are out they're trying to survive. Sam and Pamela are some of the first to die that's karma bitch
Lex and Hannah were living with Pamela ofc when the apocalypse hit, the girls wanted to go somewhere safer but Pam wouldn't let them, then one day she went out and got turned into a Zombie, the girls quickly took that as their chance to escape and they went to Tony and Ethan and then ofc ended up at Hidgens'
Charlotte was with Sam before he turned into a Zombie and then when he did she ran to Ted & HCB and stayed with them before they ended up at Hidgens'
Gary and MIAH are together and trying to survive on they're own. Sylvia, Melissa, and Greenpeace Girl end up meeting each other and decide to gang up together and they're badasses. Dan and Donna are two focused on the news and finding out if Peanuts is surving (which yes, Peanuts, (as well as Papa Ed.. At least for a while) are doing fine) and they die pretty quickly. Holloway and Duke are doing great, Holloway's a witch so yeah she's good and ofc Duke is with her so he's good too.
Lucy is in Hatchetfield and she's already in the woods vibing with Chumby before the apocalypse hits (THAM doesn't happen in this universe and instead Lucy ends up finding Chumby own her own because uh??? Reasons??? Idk bc I said so) the two of them have no idea there's a zombie apocalypse. The Paul clones take this apocalypse as they're chance to escape, Paul23 leading the uprising ofc, they don't kill Paul and take his place tho, instead it's more like "there's a zombie apocalypse? Oh fuck yeah!" *escapes* "oh theres a zombie apocalypse oh no-" some try to stay in a group and live together, some try to go out their own. There's now a bunch of random Pauls and Paul zombies around town. The main gang do end up seeing the clones and they're all just kind like "uhhh wtf???" except Paul, he's absolutely freaking out, the clones kinda are just "uhh haha how do we explain this".
Spoiler alert: the world isn't destroyed. How? Not totally sure yet but probably through Hidgens managing to find a cure and time travel. Emdriod has traveled back in time to replace Emma, but oopsie she didn't travel back far enough so she can't kill Emma in Guatemala, so she goes to Hatchetfield in hopes she can kill Emma when no ones looking and just replace her then, but oh no there's apocalypse so thats a much bigger issue. She survives easily, she's strong af, doesn't need food, all that jazz. She and Emma do meet each other and it's another "wtf?" "how do I explain this?" situation. But Emdriod lies ofc and kinda explains what happened but said that she accidentally time travelled and leaves out the whole wanted to kill her part. Now the Emdriod has found Emma she does try to kill her, that's awfully hard to do tho considering Emma is literally always with a group of people, and Emdriod doesn't want to just kill Emma right in front of everyone bc then they'll all hate her and her goal isn't to just kill Emma it's too replace her. She end up giving up and she runs into Paul 23 and they bond of my doubles of someone and wanted to kill that somoen at first and then fall in love and kill zombies together :)
Ohh uhh other ships: Paulkins, Lexthan, Barneston, Potseed (Alice x Deb) ofc. Charted, Obnoxious Teens (HCB x Cineplex Kid) oh and ofc Holloduke. Uhh Bill x being okay for once, Ted x probably not dying for once (not too sure about that one yet) Hidgens x not actually trying to murder someone for once
Wait wait I just got idea: the zombie apocalypse occurs BECAUSE of Hidgens, he tries too bring back the working boys (remember his original backstory with accidentally killing them and stuff??)

Discussion: is Hosie more of a supportive relationship or a toxic one?
While we all agree that Hope and Josie can sometimes be shitty, disrespectful, and manipulative to each other, I think that they are mostly supportive to each other. There are some people that think the opposite and conclude that Hosie is toxic. While I don't have problem with people shipping toxic ships too, I genuinely think that Hosie is mostly healthy for each other. To get a hold whether Hosie is supportive or toxic, I make this list of all Hosie interactions/scenes up to 3x13, which can be categorised as supportive or shitty that I can remember along with some of my thoughts. If you don't agree with me or forgot something, feel free to remind me or discuss them!

The definition of toxic relationship is: “any relationship [between people who] don’t support each other, where there’s conflict and one seeks to undermine the other, where there’s competition, where there’s disrespect and a lack of cohesiveness.”

While Landon and RAF see that she’s very happy but don’t think much of it, because they were new to her (no blaming). 16. Hope tell Josie to let her know if Josie needs someone to “take care” of Penelope.
17. Talent show: hope looks very happy and cheers for Josie when she sings (overly happy maybe because of slug)
18. Josie lets Hope sleep on her shoulder.
19. Josie does not come clean when Hizzie is fighting each other on “Hope telling the school Lizzie is witch bipolar” and “burn her room down to interfere with Saltzmans road trip”.
20. Josie finally come clean about burning Hope’s room and made up stories that causes Hizzie's rivalry, but Hope only cares about the crush. It can be said that Hope is very forgiving for Josie. - *smiles* you had a crush on me? (I mean, girl, she burned down your room)
21. Mystic fall pageant: Josie worries about Hope feelings when Hope finds out about the dress was from Klaus
22. When Josie distances herself from Lizzie after knowing about the merge from Penelope, Lizzie asks Hope to help make the food Josie likes the most. So it’s canon that Hope can actually make Josie’s favourite food? The attempts Hope made to repair the twins relationship show that Hope care for both of the twins.
23. Josie doesn’t want to interact with Hope either.

24. Triad: super squad team up, they help each other to save the school, it seems like when Hope says she has more backup, Josie is the one looks like leading them in.
25. Hope caught a bullet for Josie while Josie caught one for Lizzie as Lizzie was trying to catch them for Josie too.
26. Josie encourages Hope for hero time rather than staying by her side.
27. Hope only realised that she caught a bullet for Josie when Alaric asked about the hole on her sleeves. That leads to her knowledge on her blood can save Josie as well as herself being the loophole for Malivore. She tells Alaric to give Josie vial of her blood. (According to some fans, Stefan said that blood sharing is very personal.)
28. Josie is very confident that Hope will make it back to them, and urges Kaleb to have faith in Hope.
29. When Hope jumps into Malivore, something came over Josie, she feels most of the impact (maybe because Landon is dead at the moment)
30. Hope didn’t want to return to school because she sees that both Landon and Josie are very happy. She wants them to be happy.
31. While Josie is being jealous and hostile to Hope, she feels that there’s something off about Hope in her, not only jealousy.
32. Oni episode: Josie continues to be hostile to Hope because of her jealousy.
33. Hope as a badass tribrid, miraculously does not beat or intimidate or threaten Josie because of her hostility, whereas when other people do it, there will probably be consequences.
34. Josie is the one to seek Freya for the dark magic to bring back everyone’s memories.
35. Josie hit Freya using the newly-learned dark magic. Freya said something like even that spell is very powerful for a Mikaelson witch, meaning that the spell can have some strong effects on her. When Josie is questioned whether she knows what to do with the magic, in panic she hit Freya with this magic and run. It means that whether or not Josie choose to bring those memories back herself, there will surely be someone to bring them back when Josie opted not to do it. Even so, it’s Josie that contributed to bringing back people’s memories of Hope, or else Freya can never do it for Hope if the circumstances required her to do so.
36. If Josie is to bring back everyone’s memories, she knows that she will be the one that will be left behind and will be the second choice. She’s the one that will be badly affected, but she knows that she needs to do it, and calls Caroline to encourage her to do the right thing. (Or else why call? What kind of parents will encourage their child to do otherwise.)
37. Josie brings back everyone’s memories of Hope and save Hope and Lizzie from the Croatian.
38. Hope cares about Josie’s feeling to ask whether Josie is okay with Hope staying in the school. She is willing to leave the school for Josie.
39. Despite knowing that seeing Hope hurts a lot, Josie tells Hope to stay, and assure Hope that she belongs with them. For Josie, NO MATTER how much it hurts, she WANTS Hope ENOUGH to let her STAY, as Hope belongs with them. It’s what Hope wants: people thinking she’s worth staying for. It means that NO MATTER THE CIRCUMSTANCES, she hope that there’s still someone that WANTS HER ENOUGH to STAY for her.
40. Along with the previous point, it’s important to know that Josie tells Hope to stay after SimuLandon told Hope that Landon can’t tell her to stay (the same day as Landon chose to leave the girls). It assures Hope a lot.
41. Landon being a dick(sorry) to breakup with Josie and then immediately restarts a relationship with Hope (disrespect of Jandon relationship, it’s like an opposite of what he said to Josie). Hope being a bitch(sorry) by immediately accept the restart of Handon, disregarding it’s a fresh breakup for Jandon and Josie.
42. Josie avoids Hope because it hurts to see Handon immediately lovey dovey.
43. Santa episode: Hope is the one that handles Krampus-affected Josie when she tells Lizzie to run. Either the Josie being near to Lizzie will affect Lizzie, or Hope just want some time with Josie? For the former part, Hope protecting Lizzie also contributes to supporting Josie.
44. Hope actively seeks out Josie and helps Josie with the mora miserium - placing a protective barrier on it.
45. They confide in each other when they put a protective barrier on the mora miserium. They reveal their dark sides and weaknesses. They support each other verbally. (Hope reveal her jealousy towards Jandon, Josie asked Hope why Clarke chooses her, Hope said that it’s because Josie is a strong and trusting person, etc.)
46. In the Qareem/Wade-is-fairy episode, when Landon died, Hope protects the mora miserium first and passes it to Josie before going to Landon. (It’s a logical thing to do tho, Landon’s death can’t be undo but Hope can prevent Josie from going dark)

53. I don’t think she even likes you - what’s the point of saying that when it is commonly known between Hope and Josie? So it must mean the opposite(which is Josie likes Hope) and solely to hurt Hope.

But Hope never says that she is against kissing Josie at all because she now does not see her that way at all. = Hope will totally kiss Josie if the circumstances are right with a consent.
59. In Josie’s mind, true Josie really doesn't want to hurt Hope and urge her to leave before it’s too late.

After Hope and Landon comes out from Malivore and the prison world, and Landon turns into goo after the unsafe intercourse (probably not using condom considering the result, there must be sexually fluid exchanged), Hope goes directly to the principal office and explains the situation, Josie is first to believe in Hope and is willing to teach her the spell.
65. When Hope’s Therapy-Box Ethan tells Hope that sometimes the right person for her is right in front of her. I think that it’s Hope’s subconscious of him promoting himself initially. But really, Hethan interactions are so little for me to really believe that Hope’s subconscious of the right person is referring him for that. So when Josie turns up next....(I’m clowning, but it means that Hope subconscious thinks that Josie is the right person, talk about faith.)
66. Hope believes that Josie wants Hope to be safe: Hope’s Therapy-Box Josie ants Hope to come with her? It means that Hope knows that Josie will want Hope to be safe with her together. To relate it more to the problem about Hope thinks that Josie runs away from problem and Hope solves them, it also means that a part of Hope wants to not face all these problems too. So part of her is constructing this scene to provide her an option, with Josie.
67. Josie is the only one Hope attempted to save in the therapy box.
68. Josie doesn’t help Hope grieves after Landon turned into goo. (to which I resent the writer’s effort in sabotaging Hosie in the show starting season 3 to make sure they sit right in the “not queerbaiting“ section. It doesn’t make sense that Hosie doesn’t interact at all.)
69. 3x08: Josie wants to help in finding Landon. No matter the motives, she wants to help, and the final results benefit Hope and Landon, not Josie.
70. I don’t need to deal with both Saltzman twins right now - Hope disrespects both twins.
71. Hope gaslights Josie to go help her postponing her date with Finch.
72. Josie believes in Hope too much to fall for her lies when Hope is apparently desperate. (Maybe that’s why Finch call Hope five feet of trouble, or we should believe that Finch is threaten by Hope or angry at Hope out of the blue?) - Hope is Josie’s blindspot too.
73. Josie is upset that Finch will hate her, but doesn’t seem angry about Hope lying( I’m thinking about “you have a crush on me?”, but it can also be understood as Hope lying doesn’t hurt her at all. If this is the case, then Hope = nothing in Josie’s heart, is this true though?)
74. Hope says that she would be there if Josie is to fall into her dark side again even though she believes that Josie is strong enough to withstand it herself. (It’s still manipulation even though Hope means it, right? Don’t want to romanticise manipulation.)
75. Hope guilt trip Josie about Landon and the prison world.
76. Hope thinks that she need more convincing work on Josie after the guilt trip. But Josie surprises her by not needing any further convincing. It seems that her concerns it’s never the danger she could face from the prison world for saving Landon. It’s about the risks of losing herself again by taking her magic back. Both of them don’t know that the ascendant is full of dark magic.
77. Hope tells Lizzie to hold on when they discover that the ascendant is filled with dark magic and according to Josie before that, “you’re going to die”.
78. Josie steps in for Hope and Lizzie.
79. Hope only realised and apologised when she sees Josie with dark magic and in pain. (It shows the importance of Josie in Hope’s heart, but I think it’s very late so……)
80. When Josie, Landon, Wade ran into the kitchen from Berbelang!Hope, Josie and perfect Landon are in sync in saving Hope. It either means Jandon is very very low-key still a thing, or Josie and perfect Landon actually cares as much as each other cares for Hope. (And perfect Landon is made to love Hope, so if Josie show as much care as perfect Landon for Hope....)
81. Again, why do I care? - Josie: “Because I do!”
82. Josie embrace her magic entirely for Hope and to save Hope.
83. If the definition of true love is like what Wade says, like Landon would never hurt Hope, then we can see Josie is reluctant to hurt Hope either. She wants to consider it carefully before really plunge the knife into Hope’s heart. (But perfect Landon did it, as an outsider I think we agree that’s actually the right call? It’s just too soon when you basically have an hour to think carefully, maybe Cleo can control perfect Landon, so when she got the chance she makes perfect Landon to do it?)
84. Hope apologises for pressuring Josie into taking back her magic twice. Josie give credits to Hope’s words of her and her magic. Hope is very happy for Josie.
85. Hope wants Josie back in the school. It means that she thinks Josie is belonged to the school as how Josie think of Hope previously.
To sum them up, we have 18/85 of Hosie interactions/scenes where they are disrespect of each other, undermining, manipulating, and lying to each other. However, as we can see mostly they are supportive of each other, having good communications, and saving each other’s lives.

Bring me down (Arvin Russell x Reader)
Plot: Rather than God, you find solace in your only friend in Coal Creak, Arvin Russel, not knowing that he just might need you just as much as you need him.

Warnings: None really? Some swearing, suggestive themes, Arvin beating the crap out of people
A/N: heeeeey so first post yay lmao. (I have another blog tho so yeah) but after watching TDATT I just had to write something about Arvin. The movie is so amazing and if you haven’t watched it I suggest you do. Plus Tom Holland in that movie was just absolutely amzing (and hot af). But I hope you guys like this! I also tried to make the reader as gender neutral and non specific as possible for everyone, so let me know if I messed up anything. Also let me know if you’d like to see more!
There wasn’t a whole lot to do in Coal Creek, West Virginia. Besides driving aimlessly or stopping at the few diners around town, there wasn’t much that people did other than go to work and go to church every Sunday morning. However, people that grew up in Coal Creek still found ways to have fun, whether that was getting their rocks off in some abandoned parking lot or terrorizing some unsuspecting soul walking in the night. Most resorted to just getting drunk on a Saturday night before going to church the next morning, pretending that their head wasn’t pounding from the mass amounts of alcohol they drank the previous night.
Which is why you couldn’t understand for the life of you why Arvin did nothing but get himself into trouble.
“Christ, Arvin,” you sighed, rubbing the wet cloth under his nose to try and clean up the dried blood. “I don’t understand how you get in these damn fights all the time. Can’t you just, I don’t know, talk to them maybe?”
You knew immediately how ridiculous you sounded when the words came out of your mouth. There was no talking to Gene Dinwoodie and his lackeys. You just hated seeing Arvin so beat up all the time.
He scoffed and pushed your hand away, looking off to the side to avoid your gaze as you frowned.
“Fuck that. That no good sonuvabitch is gonna keep messin’ with Lenora unless I do somethin’ ‘bout it.” He then let out a short laugh, shaking his head. “Fuckin’ talking. Jesus, do you know who you sound like?”
You weren’t expecting him to suddenly face you, and you sighed as you sat down on your bed next to him.
“Emma, I know. I’m sorry. I just…” You reached over and took his hand in both of yours, thumb gently brushing over his bruised and split knuckles. “It kills me to see you constantly getting bruised and beat up. And I can’t even do anything about it.”
You felt Arvin squeeze one of your hands, and you brought your gaze back up to meet his, your eyes slightly drifting to the purplish discolored skin below his left eye.
“Now that’s not true. Who else would patch me up everytime I get the shit kicked out of me, hm?” he asked, his lips splitting into a grin.
You scoffed and took your hand out of his to push at his shoulder before laying back on your bed, resting your intertwined hands on your stomach and staring at the white discolored ceiling.
“You’re lucky I even still do this for you. My daddy’s startin’ to throw a fit, constantly seeing you over here.” You sat up on your elbows to look at the boy. “He don’t like you too much, y’know.”
Arvin hummed and laid down next to you, turning onto his side and resting his cheek in his propped up hand, and you felt yourself wanting to shrink under his gaze. You and Arvin had some unspoken thing between the two of you. You didn’t know exactly what it was, but you knew for sure it wasn’t something as plain and simple as friendship. You had never kissed or anything like that. Well, besides when you both were about twelve years old and wanted to see what it was like, constantly seeing the adults around you kiss like it was something they did all the time. You were both young and curious, and you couldn’t imagine doing it with anyone else, so it only made sense. Of course, it wasn’t anything spectacular. You were inexperienced kids, and at the time you weren’t really aware of your feelings.
Of course, you had loved Arvin since you were little. You met him when he transferred to your school after moving from Ohio. He was pretty quiet at first, didn’t really talk unless a teacher made him, and he’d get picked on and beat up by the older kids. He was new and didn’t have any friends, so of course he was an easy target. It wasn’t until he met you that he actually started opening up. You were friends with Lenora and often went over to her house, spending the night and going to church on Sunday with her and her family. Your relationship with Lenora sparked your friendship with her stepbrother, and you two were inseparable ever since.
As you grew older though, you grew distant from Lenora. You had stopped going to church ever since your mother died, your faith pretty much nonexistent at that point, and you began to question everything about religion. You didn’t blame God for letting your mother die. In fact, you didn’t really know how to feel. All you knew was that rather than getting her some actual help, all everyone did was pray.
“Pray for her, y/n. God will save her,” is what they said.
What a load of horse shit. Praying only seemed to make her worse. And when she died, you completely closed yourself off from the rest of the world. Hell, Arvin could barely get through to you sometimes. But despite how angry you were, you still found it in yourself to let him in. The town didn’t like you too much after all that. People who didn’t go to church in Coal Creek weren’t really accepted by the public. They were cast out as outsiders for not finding solace in the Lord’s name. Not that you minded much of course. The town was full of fake people that weren’t worth your time. The only person you cared about was the boy laying on your bed at the moment.
“I miss her sometimes, you know,” you muttered softly, teeth digging into your bottom lip.
Arvin raised his eyebrows, a bit surprised by your words. “Who? Your mom?”
You shook your head. “No… Well, I mean yeah, I do miss her, but… I’m talkin’ about your sister.”
It was silent for a moment, neither one of you speaking as you laid comfortably in each other’s presence.
“... Does she ever ask about me?”
Arvin sighed, running his hand through his slightly untamed hair.
“Sometimes. I mean, she doesn’t really ask about how you are or anything. More like she interrogates me about what we're doin’ when we hang out.”
You swallowed thickly and nodded, standing up from the bed and walking over to your bedroom window, watching as the sun began to set. You then heard the bed lightly creak and footsteps getting closer to you, and you’d be able to tell from a mile away that it was Arvin due to his signature boots. He rested his chin on your shoulder, and you slightly tensed up as his arms wrapped around you.
“I’m sorry,” he muttered softly, looking out at the evening sky with you.
You lightly shrugged. “It’s all right. You’re all I need in this shit town anyway,” you said, turning your head to look back at Arvin with a small smile.
You could’ve sworn you saw his eyes drift down to your lips for a moment, but couldn’t put anymore thought into it as you suddenly felt his lips against your cheek, closing your eyes at the sensation. It was over all too soon when he pulled away, your body feeling cold as he released you from his arms, and you wrapped your arms around yourself to try and get some of that warmth back.
“I should get going. I’ll see you tomorrow?” he asked, picking up his jean jacket that he had thrown on the floor once he entered your room and slipping it on.
You hummed and nodded, giving him a small smile that didn’t quite reach your eyes as you resisted the urge to ask him to stay the night. He’d spent the night at your house before, but asking him now seemed a bit too intimate. As he walked towards the door, you felt something bubble up in your throat, and as he began to step out of your bedroom, you took a step forward, reaching a hand up before you could properly think.
“Arvin, I…”
He turned to face you, all the words you wanted to say suddenly getting stuck on your tongue, and you sighed as you let your hand drop to your side, feeling a bit pathetic.
“Please… Please be careful,” you said softly, your concern clear in your expression.
Arvin gave you a small smile and nodded.
“I always am, darlin’. Don’t you worry about me.”
You let out the breath you weren’t aware you had been holding once he stepped out, and you watched from your window as he drove away in his beat up car. It was a miracle that thing hadn’t broken down already. You two had so many memories and adventures in that car, staying out late at night listening to the radio or going on short road trips outside of town that you wished never ended. It was one of the only times you ever felt peace, being in that shabby old car with Arvin. And as you fell back onto your bed and reminisced, you couldn't help but feel your heart ache a bit, thinking that one day all of this might come to an end.

“So is there any reason in particular you need me to be here?” you asked, looking at the front of the high school building from the passenger seat of Arvin’s car.
Arvin puffed on his cigarette and turned to you, blowing the smoke in your face, which you in turn punched him in the shoulder for as you coughed.
“You never know when to stop askin’ questions, do ya? I’ll let you know after we drop Lenora off to see her mom.”
Your eyes slightly widened at the mention of his sister’s name. “L-Lenora?”
As if on cue, the girl came running out the double doors of the school, pausing for a moment when she saw you in the front seat, before finally hopping into the back, Arvin turning his head to meet her gaze. He then looked back towards the school when he heard Gene Dinwoodie and his buddies shout for Lenora as they ran towards the car before he sped off, and you could hear vague shouts of “sister fucker” as you drove away.
The tension in the car grew thick, and you could feel Lenora’s gaze burning into the back of your skull as you let out a shaky breath. You were going to kill Arvin once you got him alone. He knew your relationship with Lenora was rocky, and yet he decided it was a smart idea for you two to be in a car together?
“God fucking dammit, Arvin!” you thought, your fists clenching in your lap.
You glanced over at the boy, catching his gaze for a moment before he looked away, fingers visibly tightening on the steering wheel. Once he pulled up to the church, you all sat in silence for a moment, the only noise being the loud rumbling of the engine.
“That preacher’s a little flashy,” you heard Arvin say, and it was clear he was trying to relieve some of the tension between all of you.
Lenora then piped up from the backseat: “Are you not coming?”
Arvin shook his head. “No, I got some things to do before we go home.”
Lenora looked at you again before dropping her gaze to her lap, scrunching up her dress in her fists. “Does it have to do with them?”
You sharply inhaled and dug your teeth into the inside of your cheek, turning your head to look out the window to try and stop yourself from saying anything too mean. Why was it even any of her business? Sure, they grew up together and were basically siblings, but Arvin was a grown adult who could make his own decisions. And what, she had a problem with you just because you didn’t go to fucking church?
“Go on, Lenora. I’ll be back to pick you up,” Arvin said, looking at her through the rearview mirror.
She didn’t move at first until Arvin told her to go again, and she stepped out of the car, slamming the door a bit more forcefully than she needed to before stomping off towards her mother’s grave. Once she was out of sight, you immediately turned to Arvin and sent punch after punch to his arm, brows furrowed and teeth clenched in anger.
“Are you fucking kidding me, Arvin?! You couldn’t have given me a little warning?! Or maybe picked me up after you dropped your sister off?!”
“Ow, ow! Hey, would you just-!”
He grabbed ahold of your wrists, leaning over you and pinning you against the car door as you struggled underneath his grip.
“Would you cool it?! I wouldn’t have had time to come get you after dropping Lenora off, and I want you to be with me when I do this so I don’t fuckin’ kill someone, you understand?!”
You stopped struggling, looking up at Arvin with slightly widened eyes as your chest heaved, trying to catch your breath. You then became very aware of your position, face flushing as your eyes searched his face and trailed down to his lips. Before anything else could happen though, you pulled your hands out of his grasp and pressed them against his chest, feeling his lean muscles through his tight shirt, and pushed him off of you, quickly sitting up and pressing your back against the seat.
“What… What do you mean by that? So that you won’t kill someone?” you asked, finally looking over at Arvin.
He sighed and glanced over at you before putting the car in drive and driving away from the church, hoping that Lenora didn’t just witness the interaction between you two.
“Fuckin’ Dinwoodie and those other assholes aren’t gonna leave Lenora alone unless I do somethin’ ‘bout it. And I really just need you there to keep me in check. Make sure I don’t beat those sons of bitches too bad. You… You’re one of the only ones that calm me down, so…”
You stared at Arvin for a moment, taking in what he said before letting out a light chuckle and shaking your head.
“Fuckin’ christ, Arvin. You’re a damn idiot, you know that?” you said, your shoulders relaxing a bit as you noticed Arvin forming a smile of his own.
“Yeah, but you still put up with me.”
He sent you a wink and you rolled your eyes, letting out a small scoff as you crossed your arms over your chest.
“All right then,” you sighed. “Let’s go beat up some fuckers.”

It was raining by the time you and Arvin pulled up to the school, Arvin watching the doors like a hawk for Tommy Matson to come out. Neither of you said a word, simply listening to the radio as you both passed around a cigarette. This must’ve been what Arvin meant when he talked about waiting for the right time. He always mentioned it and told you it was something his daddy taught him when he was younger, but you had never seen him get into an actual fight, you were just there for the aftermath. Well, until now, that is.
Once you saw Tommy exit the building with some girl under his arm, Arvin let out a long exhale through his nose and handed you his half finished cigarette, stepping out into the rain as you took a few puffs. Your eyes then widened when you saw him walk towards the buses with a tire iron in his hand, quickly stepping out of the car and grabbing his arm. He turned around to look at you, the look in his eyes asking “what the hell are you doing?”
“I thought you said you didn’t wanna kill nobody. You’re gonna beat his face in with a tire iron?”
Arvin pulled out of your grip, shrugging his shoulders as if it wasn’t a big deal.
“Won’t hurt him too bad. Just enough to teach him a lesson.”
He then shrugged off his jean jacket and draped it over your shoulders, the look in his eyes telling you that nothing was going to stop him from doing this. Not if it kept him from protecting his sister.
“Stay by the car,” he muttered, parting with a kiss to your forehead and adjusting the tool in his grip.
It only took a few minutes for Arvin to come back, his steps a bit faster and his chest heaving, and he gestured with his hand for you to get back in the car as he threw the wrench he used to beat Tommy with into the backseat and got behind the wheel, speeding out of the school parking lot. While you wished that was the end of it, you knew he still had Orville Buckman and Gene Dinwoodie to take care of. And while you didn’t really like all the violence, you couldn’t help but feel a bit of adrenaline course through you as Arvin drove a bit past the speed limit, tongue swiping out to wet your bottom lip as you glanced over at him.
Arvin soon pulled up to the side of a garage, putting the car in park and stepping out, this time without the tire iron. You knew he probably wanted you to stay in the car, but you couldn;t help but let curiosity get the best of you as you quietly stepped out and followed a few paces behind him, watching as he came up behind Dinwoodie and slammed the hood of the car he was under against his head twice. The scene unfolded so quickly, you didn’t really know how to react, your eyes wide as Arvin kicked the door into Orville and sent blow after blow until his face was bloody, covering his face with a paper bag after rubbing a Twinkie in his face and punching him some more.
At first you didn’t notice it, but your eyes soon caught Gene getting up, regaining his balance as he grabbed a long wrench and began making his way towards Arvin who still had his back to him, completely unaware.
“Hey, asshole!” you shouted, purely acting on instinct as he turned to face you, and you sent a right hook straight to his face, your foot coming up to kick him in the groin afterwards.
You felt a strange, sick satisfaction as you watched him crumble to the ground, hands over his crotch as he wheezed, and Arvin looked at you in amazement for a moment before crouching down next to the moaning boy and putting a paper bag over his head as well. His hands held him by the neck as he made threats to kill him if Gene or his buddies ever messed with Lenora again, the boy wheezing out apologies through the bag, and once Arvin was satisfied, he got up and stepped over Dinwoodie, grabbing onto your hand and dragging you back to the car.
He drove until the garage was far behind you two, pulling over onto an abandoned stretch of road and letting out a shaky breath as he parked the car on the gravel. You two sat there for a moment, listening closely to the sound of Arvin’s heavy breathing before he reached across you and into the glovebox for a rag to wipe his bloody knuckles with.
“Here, let me,” you said softly, grabbing the rag from him and gently dabbing his knuckles with it.
You could feel gaze on you, staring so intently it was like he was trying to burn a hole through you.
“You’re staring, Arvin,” you said, your voice still quiet like you were afraid to speak up.
He didn’t answer, still staring as you grabbed his other hand to clean it as well. You let out a sigh, looking up at the boy.
“Arvin-”
His lips were on yours before you could get another word out, inhaling sharply and tensing up as you felt his hands on your face. It took a second or two for you to relax, melting into the kiss and placing your hands against his chest, gripping his shirt as you felt one of his hands slide around to the back of your neck, pushing your lips further against his as his arm looped around you to pull you against him. This was overwhelming, your mind not able to catch up as Arvin kissed you with everything he had.
“Arvin,” you muttered against his lips, trying to get his attention.
But he didn’t stop, his kisses only becoming more desperate as the rain pounded harder against the windshield, almost as loud as the drumming of your heart. You felt a calloused hand slide up the front of your shirt, and that’s when you knew you needed to stop this before things got way too far.
“A-Arvin!” you persisted, pushing against his chest, and you couldn’t help but feel a shiver go down your spine as he let out a growl against your lips, not happy with being interrupted.
“Fuck, what?” he asked breathlessly, his hand still pressed against your side underneath your shirt as your wide eyes searched his expression.
You swallowed the lump in your throat. “I… I-I just-”
“Y/n,” Arvin muttered softly, his thumb gently brushing over your bottom lip as you caught his gaze.
You let him kiss you again, Arvin capturing your lips with his and being a bit more gentle and slower than he had been before. However, when you let out a soft moan against his lips, it only seemed to spur him on, causing him to part your lips with his tongue and deepen the kiss as he gently pushed you until your back hit the passenger door. Your whole body felt like it was on fire, your skin hot to the touch, and you didn’t know if it was just you or if it was Arvin’s hands that were causing your whole body to heat up.
You let out a small gasp when you felt his hands go to the front of your jeans, attempting to make quick work of the button and zipper, but your hands stopped him, causing him to pull back with his brows furrowed.
“What’s wrong?”
“I-... Isn’t your sister waiting for us? I mean, we’ve been gone for a while,” you said softly. Not that you really cared, you were just trying to buy some time so you could catch your breath and think for a second.
Arvin scoffed in amusement and smirked down at you.
“Since when did you give a shit about what my sister thinks?”
You knew he had you there, and you saw he was about to say something else, probably just to tease you, so you quickly reached up and laced your fingers through his hair, pulling him down to shut him up with another heated kiss. His smirk remained as he kissed you, and in that moment he knew he would never be able to get enough of you. He had always been aware about his feelings for you, and he realized that waiting for the right time could be applied to more than just beating the shit out of people. But perhaps he had waited a bit too long this time, because as his lips locked with yours over and over, he realized he should’ve done this much sooner.
“Arvin, um…”
He pulled away when you began to speak, bringing a hand up to gently hold your face as his thumb caressed your cheek.
“Do you think we could um… maybe do this somewhere less cramped? My dad aint gonna be home til later, so…”
Arvin looked at you for a moment and nodded, giving you one last kiss before pulling away from you and putting the car in drive again. You would occasionally glance at each other during the ride back to the church, not able to help the blush on your face from appearing, and he chuckled at your embarrassed expression, reaching over to hold your hand. He knew once he got you alone, he wouldn’t be able to keep his hands off you.
By the time you got back to the church, the sun had started to set, and Lenora didn’t say a word as she got into the backseat. And if she noticed Arvin’s hand resting on your thigh, she certainly didn’t say anything about that either. She didn’t even question her brother when he didn’t get out of the car after he dropped her off at home, just watching the both of you drive back towards your house in the rusted vehicle. The giddiness was practically radiating off of the two of you as you thought about being alone with each other, Arvin’s hand squeezing your thigh.
But little did you know, your lives were about to get a lot crazier in the months to come.
