The wholesome-ish friendship between Shinya and Kyo

Their latest playful Q&A in Haiiro no Ginka vol. 100 has prompted me to compile examples of this weird but overall wholesome relationship that Kyo and Shinya have and which is not obvious at first.

Situation #1

In October 2017, Kyo gifted Shinya with a custom white version of a MadaraNingen one-piece. As far as I remember, that article of clothing was not available for purchase in white at all, to the public. And of course, we all know that Shinya prefers to wear white.

Situation #2

I think that in response to Shinya sharing a video of him briefly playing with the minicars that were sold as tour goods in This Way to Self-Destruction, Kyo posted a story on Instagram of him revving up a bunch of mini-cars and persistently making them hit his phone propped up on a counter and displaying a picture of Shinya. At age 43. To which Shinya made an Instagram post vaguely hinting that: "Good children should not play with the mini-cars to hit someone's picture!"

Situation #3

In late 2022-early 2023, Shinya publicly celebrated his bandmates' birthdays via emojis on Twitter, and Kyo was the only one to respond, in kind.

Situation #4

Kyo posted a cryptic picture of Shinya's video meeting with Mana in an Instagram Story and he has mentioned on Twitter at least once that he was watching Shinya Channel (the making of the FaFa onigiri).

In the same vein, Shinya took his failed attempt at needle-felting a pink bunny in March 2022 and turned it into a miniature hammer-wielding bunny in October 2022, in response to sukekiyo unveiling their Mosaic Shoujo PV which featured Kyo in the killer bunny suit.

Situation #5

This very old video of Kyo teasing Shinya by pinching the side of his dress, Shinya reacting by pushing Kyo a bit and Kyo falling into a robot dance in response.

Situation #6

The coffee maker. In one of the live talks held during the COVID-19 pandemic at concert venues, Shinya mentioned having a coffee maker which was of no use to him, and Kyo expressed interest in taking it from him. Later, in the Galacaa livestream talk between the two, it was revealed that Shinya had promised to give Kyo his coffee maker, but he never pulled through on that offer. Kyo, sporting a doodled face to hide his own, insistently questioned Shinya on this unreliability when the topic was brought up by fans in the comments. Shinya kind of struggled but ended up explaning that the coffee maker was really useless because of a defect, that it would not have been an appropriate gift anymore. But he forgot to update Kyo about it after he tried to contact the manufacturer. Kyo replied like: "Oh, alright then."

At some point, Kyo took the matter to Twitter, confronting Shinya about it with their respective member photos to illustrate the dialogue, and Shinya replied the same way.

Situation #7

In that same livestream, Shinya is so used to Kyo's bullshit by now that he completely ignores Kyo's doodle face sheet and casually leans forward to look past him and at the interviewer, sat on Kyo's right. After a while of this, the interviewer points out to Shinya that Kyo is insistently staring at him with this disturbing face, which is when Shinya becomes startled and nervously laughs upon realizing that, also making Kyo chuckle.

Situation #8

More often than others, Shinya and Kyo are documented chatting on the chairs backstage while they wait for everyone to be ready to start the show. Maybe there's something to be said of how they are the two members of the band to leave the stage the quickest, while Kaoru, Toshiya and Die stay for a while to throw picks.

Apparently it was Shinya's earbuds that Kyo used to play with the cat (also Shinya's?) in this famous old video.

Situation #11

Other interactions on Twitter include commentary regarding the song battles that fans were voting on via that same website, during live broadcasts from their manager Fujieda on Galacaa. Kyo and Shinya were the only two members reacting to the songs that were pulled out of the box, Kyo sometimes replying to Shinya's own tweets wondering what he meant or outright questioning his preference.

Another interaction consisted in Kyo copying Shinya's tweets regarding the release of their Phalaris album and twisting Shinya's cute comments into hellish versions.

Situation #12

Probably a bunch of elusive comments throughout the years, but here's an example of something that Shinya said about Kyo in a magazine interview.

Situation #13

In Haiiro no Ginka vol. 100, the members were asked to send each other member five questions. Some chose to personalize them based on what they actually wanted to ask of the others, while a couple decided to send the same questions to all, but members were not told who the questions came from. Kyo picked up on that anonymous part of the game and when answering Shinya's set of questions, he ended each of his short answers with a second sentence that can either just be the Kansai dialect for: "Aren't you Shinya!", or in other dialects, translates more to: "Shinya, you bastard!" hahah. From what I saw, nobody else hinted at who they thought the questions came from in their answers. In reverse, Kyo took up two of his five alloted questions for Shinya with the simple statement: "You don't know you're dead yet!", a quote from Fist of the North Star which is highly intimidating as it hints that someone has defeated the character so easily and lightning-fast that they are a dead man standing, their body having trouble catching up with the reality that they were slaughtered. Shinya, in response to that repeated tease, stubbornly replies in his polite and formal Japanese that: "No, I'm not dead." Their Q&A with the other members were not nearly that quirky.

At his SERAPH birthday concert in 2023, Shinya said that his three treasures in life are:

Situation #15

Kyo replying to Shinya's post featuring a very old picture of Kyo (which was however respectfully hidden by Phalarisu-kun) by pulling out the oldest/youngest postcards of Shinya he could find, also commenting to paraphrase Shinya: "Postcards that probably no one has anymore." His own postcard depicting him peeks from underneath.

Shinya replied to that with: "I tried to look for it but couldn't find it 🥺"

Situation #16

On Twitter, Shinya posted a photo with other artists which he explained as: "Yesterday, we had a birthday celebration for everyone born in February and March 🎂 Happy birthday everyone 🎉🎉🎉"

To which Kyo directly replied: "I wasn't invited." (born February 16th)

And Shinya responded with: "The DIR EN GREY guys are a bit mean 🥺"

Kyo never replied to that.

Situation #17

Going to combine two things considering how long ago they were.

Shinya and Kyo were the first members of Dir en grey to meet, and the day right after I posted this compilation happened to be the 28th anniversary of when they first performed together.

There's also an anecdote that, way back then, no one in the band knew how to contact Kyo because none of them had his phone number, but eventually Shinya just casually revealed that he had it all along and said: "Oh I'll just call him"

Situation #18

Shinya and Kyo are the only members who are clearly dog lovers in the band, while Die and Toshiya are part of the cat team. Shinya used to have a dog (chihuahua?) and Kyo now has Pun-cha. Shinya recently wore a sweater with a dog on it.

Situation #19

In a tweet that Kyo has since deleted, he wrote that if there was one grudge he still held, it was that he never appeared on the cover of a Rockin'f magazine. Shinya also wasn't featured, so he added that while he doesn't have a grudge against them, he has declined interviews and comments for a certain magazine after that.

Situation #20

During their European tour 2024, Kyo and Shinya embarked in a playful spat on Twitter, seemingly out of boredom while traveling on the tour bus. It was funny the way it culminated in both of them forcing the other to subscribe to their fan clubs to find out more. On Kyo's side at least, I didn't see anything related to that on kyo-online for real hah.

Situation #21

Shinya took the time to snap a picture of Petit Brabançon playing on the Yunika Vision screens while he was out solving a game, then posting that on Twitter and promoting Petit Brabancon. " I heard Kyo sing while solving a mystery in Shinjuku"

He also made numerous mentions of the Petit Brabancon posters around Gorilla Hall in his video touring that venue:

About this Project

The goal of this project is more to collect than to create.

One of the ways I got so into Steddie was through engaging with community online through Twitter and Tumblr. But even though the internet is forever, some ideas get lost.

The goal of this zine to collect snippets of Steddie fanlore and preserve it in zine form for future enjoyment.

The current open categories for works are:

Contribute vs. Create

As stated about the goal of this is to collect not create.

What that means is that all content submitted should already be published on your timeline. This is for two reasons:

As creators of fic, drabbles, threads, and art, we don't need another project to do

Keep the project cost low - basically the cost of printing and postage.

Creators deserve to be compensated so their work so this zine is entirely voluntary and a labor of love. I will not be taking tweets and Tumblr posts from anyone that did not give permission.

What Can I Contribute?

For all zines the following items can be contributed:

The parameters for the first zines are as follows:

Canon Threads

Anything and everything as long as it fits within the following "canon" - (1) Everyone lives and nobody dies ala pre-vol 2; (2) Steve and Eddie are aware of each others existence; and (3) No alternate universes that aren't plausible within the Stranger Things universe as it stands.

Examples of this include - characterizations, future plans, how they get together, upside down interactions, babysitting the kids, coping after the upside down, reunited in the future, etc.

Any sort of AU that is outside of ST canon

Any sort of AU that isn't A/B/O

Omegaverse

Anything in the realm of omegaverse is fair game

Rating wise we're going to stick with the E rating on AO3, and there will be SFW and NSFW options for purchase if there is high demand.

life updates

things are still pretty Not Great at work.

had an interview at the eureka public library today. interview itself went well, but the cons of the job (long commute, less pay, only part-time so i'd have to stay part-time at barnes and therefore work more hours per week total/never have a day off again) outweigh the pros so i don't think i'll take it if they offer it to me next week.

still haven't heard back from normal public library, which would be an ideal job (50k+ a year, full-time, office work, ten minutes away from my condo). not expecting to get a call from them at this point.

word completely shit the bed on my computer last night, leading to several hours of panic and desperation as i tried to uninstall/reinstall it several times. thank god for my buddy jason, who sent me an invite into his family plan for office suite, so now i've got access to my novels again.

because of the word debacle, did not get this week's b-list written/submitted in time. wrote it this morning, tho, so hopefully it'll get printed next week.

uploaded the ebook of hazeldine vol. 1 that julie designed for me onto both amazon and b&n. within the next three days, those should be available for purchase. really hoping this brings in a wee bit more money and makes my stuff more accessible for new readers. (julie is gonna continue to format my stuff into ebooks whenever she has time/i have the money to spare for them).

started hammering out details with my buddy rayne to get my own dedicated author website up and running. high hopes with that.

supposed to go to a steampunky party thing at a local oddities shop (the painted wraith) on saturday with my new pal kara (who is VERY into lolita and offered to lend me something from her extensive closet for the event). hopefully i feel up to it; i'm very exhausted and migraine-y today after All of The Above.

then delia is having a going-away bonfire at her family's farm out in the boonies on sunday, weather/mood willing.

EccentroSoul 1 Woman Band Live : The Album

Since the earlier years of Chaquis Maliq's career, there was definitely a desire to have a live album. Maliq's first project, circa 2006, The Demonstration Vol. I (no longer available to the public) was the live vision of a seasoned

songstress. The Demonstration Vol. I displayed self-produced full band production, live audience samples from Maxwell's Live album, while adding in crowd vocals, plus background singing and arrangements on every track.

The EccentroSoul 1 Woman Band Live album is the humble and utter opposite. A stripped down and intimate performance without an audience, because in 2020, as we know it, was the height of COVID-19. The opportunity to record arose just a year after Maliq's second Sofar Sounds show, which offers a live audience and video footage. With that experience added to the EccentroSoul 1 Woman Band's performance resume, it was now time to do it in Charleston at The Gaillard Center.

If you have had the chance of seeing Chaquis owning the stage, then you know that Maliq speaks to the audience in between songs, with music still playing in the background, resembling the execution of full bands. This album includes this vibe, and your ear drums will feel like Chaquis Maliq is singing and speaking directly to you. If you are new to the EccentroSoul 1 Woman Band; Chaquis Maliq sings, plays guitar, plays the cajon, and tip taps foot instruments, simultaneously.

Yet Another JP Art Book Haul

Yes, I've got quite a bit again. But hey, these purchases have been spread out across a month-ish and weren't that expensive (all things considered). So I'll break it down.

Return To Avalon Fate Art Works

Originally, I wasn't planning on buying this art book. It was an additional piece of another auction I was bidding on for all the Heaven's Feel production materials, but the auction ended up skyrocketing to around 400 dollars which I really wasn't looking to cough up for some art books. Instead, after the auction ended I found this art book by itself for around $25 which is a pretty decent steal when you consider it's a whopping 12 inches high and 8.6 inches wide.

It's just full of full color artwork and illustrations from all over the place, and it has a full timeline of the art works featured in the book at the end. It's a super cool look at the history of Fate (and Type-Moon) that I'd definitely recommend to fans of the series. Just don't get suckered into the eBay listings that can cost well over double and even into triple of that $25 price tag.

(Side Note: The art book is available in English, though at the very steep price tag of about 73CAD)

Heaven's Feel: Presage Flower and Lost Butterfly Key Animations

Let me just say, Spring Song Key Animations is a pain to get. Nobody sells it, and those that do charge an arm and a leg. Despite that I'd still love to own it one day (alongside all the materials for Heaven's Feel). Regardless of wants and desires though, these books are pretty, very pretty. Getting to see under the hood of Ufotable's stunning work is just amazing. Also, a quick side note (and one I really should have taken pictures of), all the pages have an outline in the color of their cover so the edges of the pages appear the same as the cover. Also, the covers get lighter with each volume. They're very well thought out and beautiful books.

Record of Lodoss War Anime Guide & Art Books

It's still crazy to me just how old these books are. The OVA for Lodoss came out in 1990. Now I don't think I'm that young, but it came out before I was born. And here I have these books that look like they haven't aged a day, it's crazy.

Now truthfully, there's not a huge amount of real art to these books. They're very much guide books before they're art books, but what it does include in terms of explicit art is incredibly interesting and appealing.

Dagashi Kashi Key Animation

I am a big Kotoyama fan, I love both of their works and really hope that the Dagashi Kashi manga can make it here. So of course I'd jump on a Dagashi Kashi art book. It was interesting though, it's incredibly difficult to find listings for this art book anywhere on the internet. Just one of those items that hardly seems to exist, but it wasn't even that expensive. I was at the mercy of a single seller, but I got this for around $55 which isn't the end of the world.

It really is cool though, it reignites hope in me for LidenFilms to drop an art book for Call of The Night. But until then I'll happily enjoy my Dagashi Kashi art book. (Also, cool enough they include both the OP and ED in this art book, and it reads left to right. Weird, right?)

Now for the big guns

Bakemonogatari Production Note & Key Animation Note Vol. 1

This was a bit of a shock, to say the least. The Bakemonogatari Key Animation Notes typically go for around $100, so getting it and the Production Note for half of that was wild. Of course, I'm fighting an uphill battle with the latter volumes of the Key Animation Note almost exclusively going for that $100+ price tag.

Anyways, really impressive work as expected, and one of my favorite approaches for a Key Animation collection as it adds a small screenshot of the finished product at the bottom corner of each page. Also, the sheer volume of these production notes is wild. There's 3 whole books in the first one with over 1100 pages total. Crazy stuff.

The Garden of Sinners Storyboard Collection

This was a big find. I'm a massive sucker for storyboard collections (have even more bought/ordered), so finding the 7 volume run for Garden of Sinners is awesome. For first time buyers though, it might seem a little odd. The books are oddly small. Like a regular JP manga volume kind of small, in contrast to the massive scale of various art books.

Regardless of size though, these things are really amazing to see the differences between the staff of each movie. How they approach the essence of storyboards and how direction is reflected in it, and plenty of other things. It's just so incredibly fascinating to me.

Talk Garden Vol. 5！〜Part 1〜

This time, I intended to talk about both the messages I received on the talk theme and the comments on my latest blog post...but I just didn't have enough time😂💦 Just talking about the comments from my blog post ended up taking 45 minutes...😅 I didn't even mention the messages for the regular talk theme...😅 It's all because I don't prepare in advance with some sort of script or rough schedule🫠🫠I'm so sorry! ! 😂💦

Due to the length, I made a “Vol#5 Part①” in which I only talk about the blog comments🤣 “Vol#5 Part②” will be uploaded at a later date, on that podcast I will be focusing on reading the messages for the original talk theme 🧚✨

The comment section was full of everyone's thoughts and feelings, I had a really hard time reading through all of them, I actually cried so many times that I had a stuffy nose. Despite that, I am happy that you shared your thoughts with me, I felt like I could relate to everyone in my own way. Thank you so much.

When I read that many of you are seeking music as a source of comfort in times like this, I wanted nothing more than to sing for you right away. Which is why I was more than happy to be able to announce an online broadcast for February 6th. I would like to have a fun time with everyone at my first live show of this year, February 6th marks the 5th anniversary of my solo debut. I'm really looking forward to it! ! (((o(*ﾟ▽ﾟ*)o)))

Hep Cat Headaches: A Collector’s Story, Part 3

Nearly ten years ago, I began this Tumblr as a reevaluation of the public domain based tapes in my VHS archives. This brought with it a lot of nostalgia and discovery, but more importantly, a chance to complete a collection: The United American Video / Hep Cat / Kid Video series. Several years ago, I hit a snag when I was unable to successfully secure (on ebay, thrift stores, or elsewhere) the 3rd and 26th tapes in what had turned out to be a 29-tape set (the actual first tape--basically labelled #0--being a Mickey Mouse volume, which I amazingly discovered at a nearby thrift store). Those shortcomings, a busy life, and a divorce, shifted a lot of my attention away from this Tumblr page. Nonetheless, I never stopped looking. Around two years ago, I finally found Tape 3 (Mighty Mouse), but still had only ever seen the 26th tape--a.k.a. Porky Pig Vol. 3--one time, during a long-ago auction I failed to win for merely not realizing I wasn’t signed into Ebay properly while attempting a last-second bid.

That all changed two days ago when, during a once-in-a-blue-moon Ebay VHS search, it showed up as a Buy It Now auction (along with Vol. 1 and 2). Enthused, I snapped it up, then re-purchased a couple of volumes I’d only had “Walmart $1.00″ versions of, finally completing a collection that had started during the long-gone days of Woolworth’s, McCrory’s, Ames, and Kay-Bee.

Closure at last! But the story doesn’t end there.... Remember those Canadian versions with unique artwork that I’d found a few volumes for? Here’s what I learned from reading an entry on the PD Video Wiki: “Embury Communications was founded in 1988, and released 30-minute compilations of classic cartoons, never releasing any feature-length films. Embury's tapes were sold in stores, but could also be purchased at a discounted price through their Kid Video Club. All Embury tapes contained a membership card which could be mailed in to join the club. The Kid Video series contained at least 32 tapes, followed by a 6-hour compilation which used only the Embury brand. In the United States, Embury's tapes were released by Hep Cat Entertainment, later a division of United American Video. The Hep Cat tapes were numbered in a different order, and at least three Embury tapes were never made available by Hep Cat.” Of these 32 tapes (or at least 20) that are said to exist, I have found images of twelve, most of which have the same artwork as the U.S. counterparts, but some of which have unique art. Of the unique Canadian covers, I have four (Elmer Fudd Vol. 1, Jack Frost, Tubby the Tuba, and a Bugs Bunny one I just found), and have seen at least one other (an Elmer Fudd Vol. 2 one that I can’t buy because the site auctioning it off only ships to Canada). I also found the cover for the six-hour Embury tape (which is not part of the regular series), which suggests that a unique Porky Pig cover also exists.

Does this mean I’m going to pursue every Canadian version, or Canadian-unique cover? Not necessarily, but if I stumble upon one every once in a while, it would be nice. After all, my focus was on the American U.A.V. tapes, which were the real goal, no matter what. (It’s worth mentioning that the Canadian Embury art seems to have only spilled over into the first 20 U.S. tapes, with the last 9 U.S. tapes being different artwork that has, from what I can tell, never appeared on a cassette in Canada.)

There is also the Australian(?) nine-tape series from South Pacific Video, which appears to be ripping off seven of the original covers, while adding two serviceable (but lesser quality) illustrations of their own (Bugs Bunny and Casper). I have only found pics for one of these tapes (Porky Pig), but the back cover shows the (likely) rest of the series. Because of that, I don’t think I’ll be losing sleep over not having the South Pacific ones in my possession.

In the end, despite these Canadian and Australian variations, I have finally finished my real search, which was to get all of the U.S. “Hep Cat” titles, which I believe I finally have. Anything else from there will just be icing on the cake, though I’d love to at least see all the Canadian Embury boxes, and welcome any unique covers that trickle their way into my possession. Thanks for taking this journey with me! It has renewed my interest in these tapes (though not necessarily in purchasing more of them), and I hope to share individual cover scans from the Hep Cat series (and beyond) in the near future.
