The Animanga Find Of A Lifetime
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Yeah, I haven't really been too active this week. I've been busy during the week with life and whatnot, but a good chunk of the end of this week has been about this pile of anime and manga magazines. It's no longer just a "pile" of Animerica Extra, but a bonafide Mt. Everest encroaching on 400 issues, so I have lot to explain with just this haul alone.
So, where to begin? An outline is probably best.
This haul is a total of about 311 issues (a little more because of a few duplicates and magazines that aren't strongly related to animanga). That huge number is split across 16 different magazines, 4 of which (combining for 37 issues) are Japanese language.
The full list, in alphabetical order, is: Animage (JP), Animerica, Animerica Extra, Anime USA, AX (JP), AX DVD (JP), Mangajin, Neo, Newtype (JP), NewtypeUSA, OtakuUSA, Pulp, Protoculture Addicts, Shoujo Beat, Super Manga Blast, and Yen+.
Protoculture Addicts and Animerica stand out in the bunch because they together combine for over 100 of the issues in the haul, which is good because they're by far the longest running in the lot.
Speaking of those, let me give a bit of broad history in regards to the magazines.
While the majority are English language, there's actually a pair of them that were created/published outside of the US.
Starting it off, Protoculture Addicts was created in Montreal, and was actually ran as a Robotech Fanzine for about a year or so before becoming a full fledged magazine.
And then there's Neo, the UK based magazine. It's arguably the most interesting ongoing magazine out of the lot (with Otaku/Anime USA being the only others). It's also the only monthly animanga magazine to be currently published in English as OtakuUSA is bimonthly, and AnimeUSA is quarterly.
But that's enough history, what about the insides? For the most part they're relatively standard, but there's not "as many" manga anthology issues in this mountain.
Super Manga Blast, Shoujo Beat (only 9 issues), Animerica Extra (which I now have extras of), Pulp (only 2 issues), and Yen+.
That last one is the most interesting to me purely because of an editorial/column penned by "The Otaku Pimp". Yeah, that's a real thing that appears in that magazine which is incredibly funny to me.
More on the interesting side though is Mangajin, a magazine focused on teaching Japanese through Japanese culture, which of course includes manga. This one is especially interesting because it oftentimes features the only instance of the manga inside being translated to English.
And this is all just the tip of the iceberg. There's an insane amount of information and history in the magazines, and an exciting amount of unknowns with the frankly incredible amount of promotional DVDs that remain attached to so many of these issues.
I just have to get through it all.... which will take a long time. Will certainly be recruiting friends and whoever to help out, so hopefully I won't be doing this for the rest of my life haha

Akata appreciation post and manga haul 📚
Tumblr media
I didn't buy all of them at once but I did buy them pretty recently
Love Mix-Up is almost over in France, only 2 volumes left! And I started buying Boys Run the Riot because I realised I could spend my money now, especially on stuff I really loved reading digitally
Once again, Akata is THE manga publisher to me, they're always coming out with amazing titles, a lot of them with queer themes and storylines. They're even going to publish She Loves to Cook, She Loves to Eat (my review here) in France, which is amazing. Even when their titles aren't queer, they're amazing: Night view on the Factory was just zjfjzuej (look up the TW though). They're a small but passionate team and it really shows that they love what they're doing
Anyways, if you're curious what these are about:
My post about Boys Run the Riot
My post about Love Mix-Up
Entre Nos Mains
English title: Run Away With Me, Girl
Original title: Kakeochi Girl / かけおちガール
Genres: Drama, Romance, Slice of Life
Themes: Adultery, Homosexuality
Japanese volumes: 16 (Finished)
Maki’s first love was her high school classmate, a girl named Midori. But Midori broke up with Maki at graduation, saying they were now “too old to be fooling around dating girls.” Ten years later, Maki still can’t get Midori off her mind, and when the two women reconnect after a chance encounter, Maki realizes that, while her feelings haven’t changed, Midori has long moved on—in fact, she’s engaged. Yet the more Maki hears Midori talk about her soon-to-be-husband, the more red flags she notices...
Absolutely fell in love with the art and then the story punched me in the guts in the best way. The characters are complex and while they may not be entirely lovable, they are wholly human. And I really loved that
Some trigger warnings apply though, so I'll list the ones that come to mind*: cheating, domestic violence, gaslighting, misogyny, internalised homophobia
*Note that those are the ones I remember from what little I've read of this story and other TW may apply. Please try to look up a more complete list if you have any doubts. Take care of yourself ✨

Recent manga haul! Two of which are some favourites from back when I was getting initially into anime and manga that really stood out in my teens! I'm so happy I got some 1st volumes of The Earl and the Fairy written by Mizue Tani, illustrated by Asako Takaboshi as well as Kamisama Kiss written and illustrated by Julietta Suzuki.

Suruga-Ya Art Book Haul
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
It's crazy. I made this order Friday night, and it's at my doorstep Wednesday afternoon. And I didn't even pay for shipping thanks to the campaign that Suruga-ya was running. The average cost of a book here is under 10CAD, all said and done, so I really can't recommend giving it a shot if you're looking for art books.
Anyways, these are the ones I grabbed, and I'd love to take a walk through each of them and why I got them.
Prince Universe - Mutsumi Inomata
Tumblr media
This is the first, and oldest art book in the haul, and that age and position comes with reason. Inomata is an insanely tenured animator, dating all the way back into the end of the 70s. They've worked on series like City Hunter, Saint Seiya, Maison Ikkoku, and many many others. One of the best things about the art book is the age of the style, and not in a bad way. No, these drawings have aged like fine wine over the years and are very beautiful.
Tumblr media
Hydrogen - Tsuruta Kenji
Tumblr media
Need I really say anything? It's Tsuruta Kenji, incredible art and a healthy side of nudity are present in everything they do. Really though, I think what I like most about Hydrogen is its range, opening with a short manga and ending with a large amount of black & white line art. Though who am I kidding, his works that are done in color are still incredible, and there's something that I just love about his character designs.
Tumblr media
Boogiepop And Others - Koji Ogata
Tumblr media
Despite its relative popularity for the era, Boogiepop isn't something that really ends up talked about all that much. But I'm a big fan of it and its style/designs, so I had to pick up the art book from the illustrator for the light novels.
Tumblr media
Nostalgia - Tsukiji Nao
Tumblr media
Admittedly, I'd not heard of Nao before finding this art book. But I saw the cover and knew I wanted it, and now I'm in the middle of reading Adekan as its got me in its grips, and for good reason. Nao's art is incredibly beautiful, and I'd say the "best" out of this batch of art books.
Tumblr media
Mix Noise - Misaki Saitou
Tumblr media
Saitou is just a damn good artist. Their style presents a discernable age, and a very palpable edge that I just can't get enough of. They're not on the level of Nao, but it's a style of art that I could look at all day long. Side note, the art for the second was for the cover of a manga. Yeah, imagine seeing art like that on a manga. I'd immediately pick it up.
Tumblr media
Okamarble -Okama
Tumblr media
Despite my excitement and interest in the artist, I don't know if I'm the biggest fan of this art book. Okama is known for having storyboarded some pieces of the stunning Kubikiri Cycle ONA as well as doing some art for Arakawa Under The Bridge and even character designs for some other SHAFT series. I do think their art is pretty, I'm just not a fan of the more erotic nature of the book at large (which delves into full on nudity towards the end). So yeah, I don't think this is an art book for people that aren't die hard Kubikiri Cycle/SHAFT fans, but the art within is still really good.
Tumblr media
Step2 - Hisashi Eguchi
Tumblr media
Don't get me wrong, I'm definitely a fan of Hisashi Eguchi. I love their design sense, and am a massive sucker for their color design and style of shading/lighting. Buttttttt I got this art book because of the Sonny Boy art in it. I know, sue me, but this is just about the only art book out there that has Sonny Boy art in it from a staff member on the anime.
Tumblr media
World of The Tapir - Shizuku
Tumblr media
In a world where it feels like there's a near unlimited amount of great artists, how do you separate yourself? Well, what separates them for me is color design. Having fresh and unique art that plays on color and provides a strong sense of individuality is a surefire way to get my attention like World of The Tapir did. Not that the art itself isn't pretty, but the color design is what really singled it out for me.
Tumblr media
Kaleidoscope - Keiko Takemiya
Tumblr media
Being a part of the Year 24 group is introduction enough, I feel. But I'll keep going. Being a pioneer not of just shoujo manga, but manga in general, Takemiya has a pretty impressive bit of history behind her, which this book details. Not so much "art book" as it is "visual memoir", it's a very interesting piece that I'll be slowly digesting over time alongside it's timelessly pretty art.
Tumblr media
1017 - Toinana
Tumblr media
I...don't have anything to write for this art book. Toinana is an illustrator that I found on pixiv and so I stumbled across this art book. I love their character designs for how busy and creative they are, but I don't really have any sort of history to explain with them because I don't know too much, really.
Tumblr media
Asai Genji / Kusanaga Rin Artworks
Tumblr media
I've been a fan of Kusanaga Rin's artwork in The Faraway Paladin since I first laid eyes on the covers for the series, so imagine my surprise when I found out they had a penname. Even further, imagine my excitement in finding out they've done art for Fate (among plenty of other video games). If you want art closer to the video game side of JP culture then I can definitely recommend this one.
Tumblr media
And so finally that's the end of the list. There's a lot of art for me to enjoy in these books, so I'll certainly be taking my time with them. But not too sow though, have to make sure I've got a clean slate for the next time suruga-ya has a free shipping sale. Seriously, even with the minor price differences between the JP and global website, the free shipping makes books like these a steal. Absolutely love art within books that are in outstanding or even borderline amazing condition, there's not really a way you could go wrong if you're looking for this stuff.
Also, for those that have read this far and want just a little more (literally a single image more per art book) I will have a video up on my TikTok account (yes I caved and made one, largely for art books) tomorrow morning EST, so feel free to check it out.

So my huge box of manga/manwha arrived and I'm crying because I finally decided to get the ObeyMe manga and it's me eye-rolling at Lucifer, wanting Beel to bite me, and Dia referring to Luci as beautiful is making me miss my fics I wrote of them together T^T BUT alas. I'll just keep up with the manga at this point. I have no drive to go back to the game

i received my yankee-kun to megane-chan / flunk punk rumble (miki yoshikawa) manga from japan!
one of my favourite series when i was in hs/uni. i reaaaally love yankee stuff, especially super strong girls. this is shounen, but its by a women, so while it has fanservice and stuff, i think its a pretty good read for people who mainly like shoujo and dont normally read shounen. its mainly comedy, however, school life with an increasing ensemble cast and all kinds of stupid hijinks.

I got another manga haul!
Tumblr media
I was so curious about Inuyasha that as I was organizing my shelf I sat on the floor and read the whole first volume 😂 I also bought Ouran High School Host Club because I didn't want to miss out on the series anymore. Its been 11 years 😭 SpyxFamily because I wanted it after catching up. Honestly a series I would also buy the anime dvds for. Kimi Ni Tokdoke cuz its such a wholesome high school romance and I want to see the rest of Kazehaya's and Sawako's relationship development. Also the art is so cute. Aand the third Eternal edition of Sailor Moon 🌙
