ULTRAMagic Alternate Character Rules
Given how there is mature art for UMAE, I am going lay some ground rules.
Rule of Thumb: If I haven't drawn a character and they are not appropriate for mature art, they won't appear here on this blog and I will be not drawing mature art of them... FOR OBVIOUS REASONS.
Rules:
List of Characters:
Some things to note:
These changes are only retroactive to characters on the SFW only list. Unless I SPECIFICALLY ask you to take down art, you are fine.
If a character in my gallery is not listed here, it is most likely a retired character. Please do no draw them until I decide to use them again (my discretion). Note that this mainly applies to older characters. Some characters may not be ready to be placed on the list yet. This applies to newer characters. And I may have missed a character or two (let me know if that is the case)
I will not change my stance on the SFW characters, so don't even bother asking. I also reserve the right to move characters into the SFW category at my discretion.
Unless I specifically asked you take down art made prior to the list, assume you're fine
There is a lot of characters on display here, but just remember the following: This list covers multiple series, many characters are important to other characters, and there is overlap with younger and alternate versions of certain characters
Some of these characters will only ever be mentioned
All characters can be found in their respective folders.
Yes, I am fully aware this can potentially spoil future characters. And YES, I even alphabetized this for easy reading and reference. Also this will be updated as time goes on.
SFW Only characters:
Aoife Crawford/ULTRAMagic Devil
Bethany Briggs
Brendan (child + wolf)
Charles Blackwell Ford
Cynassa (young) (UMAE)
Dark lord Kris
Deadlock/Zas (young)
Dr. Ethan Luminate

Orion
Randalph Theoprastus Scarfe
Stolas (young)
Terrus, Toa of Shadow
Trevor
ULTRAMagic Ex
ULTRAMagic Revenant
Will (child)
Zelgo (Pre-reboot)
Verdict: These characters are either too young, not human, are legitimately not into NSFW, or are a unique situation. If I find NSFW art of these characters, I will expect you to take it down ASAP.
Please refrain from NSFW/Mature art of:
Buster Ash
Brendan (adult)
Captain Roger
Cynassa (UMAE)
Ellen the Wayward
Ignatius "Infinity" Daren Ford
Kyu #9
Lucifuge Rofocale (UMAE)
Olivia Briggs
Stolas (UMAE)
ULTRAMagic Walker
Vladislav Velimir Faust
Verdict: I am not saying no, but I'm also not saying yes. Please refrain from drawing NSFW/Mature art of these characters.
NSFW/Mature art wouldn't make sense for:

Vlad III Dracula (UMAE)
Weaver Craddock
Will (Red Lantern)
William "Tusk" Willfort/ William Owyn Von Hohenheim
Zal-Rint
Zoltan Tenebre Raphael Dracul
Verdict: NSFW/Mature Art would not make much sense for these characters. Some reasons are as follows:
Some are well beyond carnal desires
Some have no interest in that stuff
Some are evil and are not to be trifled with
Constructs and Robots have no interest
Eliza-Rex has no time for that nonsense
Some characters are emotionally unstable
TL;DR You better have a GOOD REASON for why you're drawing this kind of art for these characters.

Acceptable NSFW/Mature characters:
Alfonso Devious
Antonio Pari (+ Spiderlock)
Celena
Cheryl Garnier
Deadlock/Zas (Adult)
Dolus & Iocus
Erika Storm
Hel Jessica Ford
Iden Athenon
Lerissa Bloodfang

Stark Devious
Turvy-Topsy (Adult)
Valentina Pari
Will (Floralia Alternate/Adult)
Will (Phantasm LLC/Adult)
Will (Gorgon/Adult)
Will (LD/Adult)
Zelgo (Reboot)
Verdict: These characters are acceptable for NSFW/Mature art. They are all adults and appear as adults. They are either my characters or characters I have permission to use. In regards to characters I have permission for, check with the owner regardless before drawing.

Okay, thinking a lot about this currently because I am taking a course about the erasure of queer narratives in literature in the 17th-19th century and I am once more filled with the belief that it would be so easy to make a queer Sherlock Holmes story in the original time and it is a crime that no one has made this happen.
Even ignoring his relationship with Watson, there are so many elements in the original ACD stories that could easily be incorporated into a queer retelling of these stories.
1.) In the stories, Watson states that the busiest year for Holmes was 1895, the same year that Oscar Wilde was put on trial. It would be such a brilliant element to incorporate even if it wasn’t at the forefront of the story because it adds this extra fear and isolation to the character of Holmes as he tries to go about his life while this very public and horrific trial is happening in the background.
2.) Holmes comes from a very wealthy family, I believe they have some sort of title however I can’t remember what it is exactly. They are high enough in society that his brother has an important position in government. Why then does Holmes struggle to pay rent? When Stanford arranges the meeting between Watson and Holmes, it is because Holmes mentioned to him that he cannot afford rent. Why would Holmes not be able to afford rent unless he has no contact or support from his family? Why does he never speak about them? Even though he and Mycroft are supposedly still close, it takes him years to tell Watson about him.
3.) Holmes hates blackmailers. Hates them more than murders including Moriarty. He tells Watson that he considers them the lowest members of society. With Moriarty, he had a grudging respect for his intelligence and ability to control so big of an operation, but he loathes Charles Augustus Milverton.  In the story he appears in, Holmes and Watson break into his house and then watch as one of his victims murder him. Holmes then refuses to help the police find the killer and even goes so far as to tell the police that he thinks that the world is better place with Milverton. Why would Holmes have such a violent hatred of blackmailers unless it was personal?
So you see! There are so many little aspects about this character that could turn him into a compelling and nuanced queer character and that is without bringing up his relationship with Watson or even Victor Trevor if you wanted more backstory. You could even add a little bit about why he knows so many different fighting techniques because he had to learn how to defend himself.
Anyway, if no one else does it, then I guess in 6 years when the last Holmes story is no longer under copyright so the Doyle Estate can’t stop me, I’ll just have to write my own story with all these points. (And in that version, Irene Adler is also queer)

Favorite Sherlock Holmes fics from 2020
Usually I put a bunch of explanations and disclaimers on these lists but you know what, it was a weird year and I’m not going to try to justify or apologize for what I read or didn’t read so here are my favorites that were completed last year, in descending order of length:
and your very flesh shall be a great poem by CaitlinFairchild (151K, E, Johnlock) After a tragic confrontation with terrible consequences, Sherlock and John follow Mary as she flees to America.
Drawn to Stars by Silvergirl (107K, E, Johnlock, Sherlock/OMC) After the Culverton Smith case Sherlock is clean, working, and looking for a romantic partner—since John has told him that’s what he needs. Shame John didn’t mention he was interested in that role himself, before Sherlock went off to Rome with a gorgeous Italian copper to try to fall in love and become a complete human being. (This one is very slightly cheating because it was finished on 30 Dec 2019, but it didn't make it onto my 2019 list because I didn't read it until after I'd made the list. And it deserves to be on a Best Of list, so here it is.)
Thermocline by J_Baillier (83K, M, Johnlock) John "Five Oceans" Watson — technical dive instructor, dive accident analyst and weapon of mass seduction — meets recluse professor of maritime archaeology Holmes. As they head out to a remote archipelago off the coast of Guatemala to study and film its shipwrecks for a documentary, will sparks fly or fizzle out?
Do No Harm by Calais_Reno (79K, T, Johnlock) In 1923, Dr John Watson is on trial for the murder of his lover, Mary Morstan, a writer of popular mysteries. If convicted, he will hang. Sherlock Holmes sets out to prove his innocence, but finds himself more and more infatuated with the handsome doctor, and deeper and deeper inside the bohemian world of London's painters, playwrights, and poets. Will he uncover the evidence needed to acquit him in time?
To Be Human by ohlooktheresabee (78K, NR, Johnlock) There is a serial killer on the loose with a penchant for collecting the brains of his victims. Sherlock, John and Scotland Yard are on the case, but something about the chosen victims has Sherlock on edge. While they piece together the clues that will lead to the killer, John begins to realize that the way his best friend thinks may sometimes be more a hindrance than a help….
immediate and inglorious by simplyclockwork (72K, E, Johnlock) Bodies are showing up in back alleys, with no sign of a struggle, no trace of drugs. If not for the strangulation bruises on their necks and the scythe carved into their left shoulders, they could have died peacefully, in their sleep. With New Scotland Yard dumbfounded by the Grim Reaper Killer case, Sherlock is called in to consult. The more he investigates, the deeper Sherlock finds himself drawn into the work of London's newest serial killer. As his views of good and bad begin to blur, he risks losing himself to a darkness he never imagined. And, even more pressing: where does John Watson, grieving ex-boyfriend of the Grim Reaper's latest victim, fit into all of this?
Curtain Rising by tiger_in_the_flightdeck (61K, E, Johnlock) A disgraced television star is the target of a series of death threats just after a theatre production’s adaptation of The Sound of Music is announced with her as the lead. The suspect list is a mile long and growing, Rosie Watson is in the spotlight, and Sherlock might be getting too fond of his time on stage to focus on the case. With opening night approaching, can he and John figure out who wants their client dead before her final curtain rises?
The Fire Finds a Home by fearfully_beautifully_made (61K, E, Johnlock) After Sherlock and John decide to give having a relationship a go, this is how their relationship starts to develop. There a little bit of plot, if you squint, but it was mostly an excuse to write John and Sherlock having sex in a lot of different ways and learning to love each other.
Borrowed Ghosts by DiscordantWords (57K, M, Johnlock) In the aftermath of the Culverton Smith case, John spent one painfully stilted afternoon hanging out with Sherlock. He counted the minutes, finished his tea, and left for home without ever clearing the air between them. And once he'd left, he found it very hard to go back.
You Might Just as Well Be Blind by ArwaMachine (56K, E, Johnlock) When a serial killer starts targeting couples, Sherlock and John must do what they have to do in order to get to the bottom of things. Unfortunately, John already has a girlfriend. Surely pretending to be in a relationship with Sherlock won't pose any problems with his relationship, will it?
The Broken Tether by J_Baillier (54K, M, Johnlock) Maybe he thinks that you only enjoy his company because of the Work, because of the way his dazzling intellect shines when he's in his element, but the truth is this: it is when he is at his most human, most bare, that you feel closest to him.
how the light gets in by subtext-is-my-division (Quill_A)  (54K, E, Johnlock) Red wine always makes him tipsier than usual and he finds himself saying, the words slurring a bit. “You know, I’ve got to ask. Do you always shoot cabbies for people you barely you know?” John meets his gaze over the rim of his glass, and there’s something there that Sherlock can’t pin down. “Not for everyone,” he says, meaningfully, pointedly, his smile all teeth.
Erosion by saintscully (53K, E, Johnlock) Sherlock’s father falls ill, leaving the surviving family members broken and rudderless. James Sholto shows up in London unexpectedly, his intentions unclear. John has to navigate the consequences of crime, illness and death and their impact on his frayed relationship with Sherlock.
Hold You Like a Weapon by MissDavis (52K, E, Johnlock) Eurus shows up at 221B Baker Street in labour. Things go downhill from there.
Chances Are by Berty (51K, M, Johnlock) Sherlock is spending some time in his mind palace - so far, so normal. But why is John there, why do things keep changing and why are there only two exits from the sitting room at 221B, neither of which seem to go anywhere useful? It's a case like no other for Sherlock Holmes and John Watson.
Sine Nomine by SilentAuror (45K, E, Johnlock) As Mycroft reviews the footage from Culverton Smith's morgue, he revisits his original question: whether John Watson would be the making of his brother, or make him worse than ever. He's come to a conclusion, but decides to give John one last chance. So he gives him a choice.
Cockaigne by HollyShadow88 (38K, E, Johnlock) When John’s contacted by an old uni friend about problems in his new art exhibition, he doesn’t think it will be worth Sherlock’s time. After a glance of the crime scene, however, they’re both pulled into the project in ways John didn’t expect. Will a week of erotic performance art finally be enough to bring them together in the way they both secretly hope? (Spoiler: it’s a tropey fic, of course it will)
Written in Ashes by 88thParallel (37K, M, Johnlock) Sherlock becomes the prime suspect in a homicide case, and recently unearthed memories of his childhood are complicating matters. It's up to John to track down answers — can he help Sherlock before it's too late?
A Desperate Indulgence by LollipopCop (34K, M, Johnlock) John thinks it's 2012 after waking up with amnesia, having no memory of Mary. Sherlock, exhausted from years of tension and hiding his love, pretends they got married instead.
Inhale With Ease by Vulpesmellifera (25K, E, Johnlock) In the years after Vivian Norbury's capture, life seems to work out just as John planned. He's got that respectable job at the surgery and goes home to his wife and child. He joins Sherlock on cases a couple times per week. It's a rhythm he can live with - just enough adrenaline highs to balance out the drudgery of a normal bloke's life. Until a pandemic, and Victor Trevor, arrive in London.
The House on Rue des Boulangers by Berty (24K, M, Johnlock) After being invalided out of the army and without any other prospects, John Watson has relocated to a small town in northern France. Now he has to decide what to do for the rest of his life. One morning there's a mad stranger in his garden chasing a swarm of bees, and it seems John's decision is made.
High Mountain Tea Leaves by disfictional (23K, E, Johnlock) A mountaintop robbery on a Japanese-occupation-era train where the only item stolen was a small case of mysterious tea leaves in a backpack? An ideal Christmas gift, two days late. Sherlock convinces John to travel for tea.
Detours by saintscully (22K, M, Johnlock, Sherlock/OMC) During the better part of the first year following Mary's death and the events at Sherrinford, Sherlock and John are slowly rebuilding their lives and their friendship. All seems (relatively) well and John takes comfort in once again being a father, a doctor and a friend. An unexplained shift in Sherlock's behaviour catches John by surprise, and he begins to worry about his place in his friend's life. John has to examine everything he thought he knew about Sherlock, himself and their relationship in order to win his rightful place yet again.
hands full of matter by simplyclockwork (21K, E, Johnlock) When Sherlock is captured in Serbia, Mycroft cannot afford to involve the British government in his rescue. Instead, he sends John. After two years spent thinking Sherlock was dead, John finds himself navigating not only Sherlock’s rescue but their fractured friendship as well.
The Victim Experience by J_Baillier (16K, T, Gen) A case takes Sherlock and John deep into the seedy underbelly of the haunted attractions industry. With audiences craving more and more intense experiences, is a real murder the next logical step?
On the Fence by BeautifulFiction (13K, T, Johnlock) The murder of the King's College fencing champion leads to revelations about Sherlock's past. Will it be the point that tips them from friends to lovers, or will they remain on the fence?
Plus bonus ACD era:
"Baker Street: The Sleep of Reason": A Memoir by John H. Watson, M.D. by Gaedhal (98K, M, Johnlock, Johniarty) This is a Victorian Era story in the "Sherlock Holmes" (2009) Ritchie-verse. The main characters are Sherlock Holmes and Dr. John Watson and is from the doctor's memoirs. It was written before "A Game of Shadows" so there are differences in this story and film canon, mainly in the person and backstory of one particular character.
The Taste of Truth by sanguinity (25K, T, Johnlock) Two and a half years after Reichenbach, John Watson discovers the magical tree that caused Holmes to fake his death.
The Adventure of the Vatican Cameos by Garonne (18K, E, Johnlock) How should one behave when waking for the first time in the bed of one's dearest friend? Holmes and Watson solve a case in Catholic London while navigating the turbid waters of their new relationship.
Hot Water by wordybirdy (13K, E, Johnlock, Watson/Gregson) Dr. John Watson's libidinous affair with a respected Scotland Yard inspector abruptly judders to a halt when the former meets a certain Mr. Sherlock Holmes, Consulting Detective, for the very first time. The attraction between the two is strongly mutual, but misunderstandings only multiply and tensions abound, as all three men attempt to deal with the new situation.

Today we remember the passing of Mick Ronson who Died: April 29, 1993, London, England
Michael Ronson (26 May 1946 – 29 April 1993) was an English guitarist, songwriter, multi-instrumentalist, arranger, and producer. He achieved critical and commercial success working with David Bowie as one of the Spiders from Mars. He was a session musician who recorded five studio albums with Bowie followed by four with Ian Hunter, and also worked as a sideman in touring bands with Van Morrison and Bob Dylan.
Ronson and Bowie also produced Lou Reed's Transformer with Ronson playing lead guitar and piano and writing string arrangements, and brought mainstream recognition. The album is considered an influential landmark of the glam rock genre, anchored by Reed's most successful single, "Walk on the Wild Side".
Ronson also recorded five solo studio albums, the most popular being Slaughter on 10th Avenue, which reached No. 9 on the UK Albums Chart. He played with various bands after his time with Bowie. A classically trained musician, Ronson was known for his melodic approach to guitar playing. He was named the 64th-greatest guitarist of all time by Rolling Stone in 2003 and 41st in 2012 by the same magazine.
Early in 1970, John Cambridge came back to Hull in search of Ronson, intent upon recruiting him for a new David Bowie backing band called The Hype. He found Ronson marking out a rugby pitch, one of his duties as a Parks Department gardener for Hull City Council. Having failed in his earlier attempts in London, Ronson was reluctant, but eventually agreed to accompany Cambridge to a meeting with Bowie. Two days later, on 5 February, Ronson made his debut with Bowie on John Peel's national BBC Radio 1 show.
The Hype played their first gig at The Roundhouse on 22 February with a line-up that included Bowie, Ronson, Cambridge, and producer/bassist Tony Visconti. The group dressed up in superhero costumes, with Bowie as Rainbowman, Visconti as Hypeman, Ronson as Gangsterman, and Cambridge as Cowboyman. Also on the bill that day were Bachdenkel, The Groundhogs and Caravan. The following day they performed at the Streatham Arms in London under the pseudonym of 'Harry The Butcher'. They also performed on 28 February at the Basildon Arts Lab experimental music club at the Basildon Arts Centre in Essex, billed as 'David Bowie's New Electric Band'. Also on the bill were High Tide, Overson and Iron Butterfly. Strawbs were due to perform but were replaced by Bowie's New Electric Band. John Cambridge left in March, again replaced by Woody Woodmansey. In April 1970, Ronson, Woodmansey, and Visconti started recording Bowie's The Man Who Sold the World album.
During the sessions for The Man Who Sold the World, the trio of Ronson, Visconti, and Woodmansey – still under The Hype moniker – signed to Vertigo Records. The group recruited Benny Marshall from The Rats as vocalist, and entered the studio to record an album. By the time a single appeared, The Hype had been renamed Ronno. "4th Hour of My Sleep" was released on Vertigo to an indifferent reception in January 1971. The song was written by Tucker Zimmerman. The B-side was a Ronson/Marshall composition called "Powers of Darkness". The Ronno album was never completed.
Bowie's backing ensemble, which now included Trevor Bolder, who had replaced Visconti on bass guitar, and keyboardist Rick Wakeman, were used in the recording of Hunky Dory. The departure of Visconti also meant that Ronson, with Bowie, took over the arrangements, while Ken Scott co-produced with Bowie. Hunky Dory featured Ronson's string arrangements on several tracks, including "Life On Mars?".
It was this band, minus Wakeman, that became known as The Spiders from Mars from the title of the next Bowie album. Again, Ronson was a key part of The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars, providing string arrangements and various instrumentation, as well as playing lead guitar. Ronson and Bowie achieved some popularity over the concerts promoting this album, when Bowie would simulate fellatio on Ronson's guitar as he played. Ronson's guitar and arranging during the Spiders from Mars era provided much of the underpinning for later punk rock musicians. In 1972 Ronson provided a strings-and-brass arrangement for the song "Sea Diver" on the Bowie-produced All the Young Dudes album for Mott the Hoople. Ronson co-produced Lou Reed's album Transformer with Bowie, playing lead guitar and piano on the songs "Perfect Day" and "Satellite of Love". Again with Bowie, he re-recorded and produced the track "The Man Who Sold the World" for Lulu, released as a single in the UK, and played on a few tracks on the Dana Gillespie album Weren't Born a Man. Ronson appeared on the 1972 country rock album Bustin' Out by Pure Prairie League, where he undertook string ensemble arrangements. Ronson recorded "Angel #9" for his second solo LP Play Don't Worry), and string arrangements on "Boulder Skies" and "Call Me, Tell Me" .
His guitar work was next heard on Bowie's Aladdin Sane and 1973 covers album Pin Ups. However, he was absent from the subsequent Diamond Dogs album. In September 1983 he was a special guest at the Toronto leg of the Serious Moonlight Tour, playing lead guitar during the performance of "The Jean Genie". He had only been asked to play the day before.
Bowie said in a 1994 interview that "Mick was the perfect foil for the Ziggy character. He was very much a salt-of-the-earth type, the blunt northerner with a defiantly masculine personality, so that what you got was the old-fashioned Yin and Yang thing. As a rock duo, I thought we were every bit as good as Mick and Keith or Axl and Slash. Ziggy and Mick were the personification of that rock n roll dualism.
After leaving Bowie's entourage after the "Farewell Concert" in 1973, Ronson released three solo albums. His solo debut Slaughter on 10th Avenue, featured a version of Elvis Presley's "Love Me Tender", as well as Ronson's most famous solo track, "Only After Dark". In addition, his sister, Margaret (Maggi) Ronson, provided the backing vocals for the set. Between this and the 1975 follow-up, Ronson had a short-lived stint with Mott the Hoople.
He then became a long-time collaborator with Mott's former leader Ian Hunter, commencing with the album Ian Hunter and featuring the UK Singles Chart No. 14 hit "Once Bitten, Twice Shy", including a spell touring as the Hunter Ronson Band. In 1980, the live album Welcome to the Club was released, including a couple of Ronson contributions, although it also contained a few studio-based tracks – one of which was a Hunter/Ronson composition. In 1974, Ronson secured the No. 2 spot from a reader's poll in Creem magazine as the best guitarist that year (with Jimmy Page taking first place), and Eric Clapton in third place after Ronson.
Ronson contributed guitar to the title track of the 1976 David Cassidy release Getting It in the Street. On 11 February 1977 the single "Billy Porter" (b/w "Seven Days") was released on RCA Victor Records, but did not chart. Roger Daltrey employed Ronson's guitar on his 1977 solo release One of the Boys. In 1979, Ronson and Hunter produced and played on the Ellen Foley debut album, Night Out, with "We Belong to the Night" and the hit single "What's a Matter Baby".
He also played guitar on Roger C Reale’s “Reptiles in Motion” album recorded in 1979 and only released in 2019 after the master tapes were acquired from the family of the original rights owners. The label Big Sound, based in Connecticut, had gone bust and the album remained unreleased for forty years.
In 1982, Ronson worked with John Mellencamp on his American Fool album, and in particular the song "Jack & Diane". Both "Jack & Diane" and American Fool topped their respective US Billboard charts.
In 1990, Ronson again collaborated with Hunter on the album YUI Orta, this time getting joint credit, as "Hunter/Ronson". One of the backing singers on the album was Carola Westerlund. While in Sweden Ronson wrote and produced three new songs with Estelle Millburne and Westerlund as EC2: "I'm So Sorry"/"Kiss Me" (1990), then a second single as ECII: "Passion" with a B-side cover of J. Kilette and K. Brown's "I'm Forever Blowing Bubbles".
In 1993, he again appeared on a Bowie album, Black Tie White Noise, playing on the track "I Feel Free", originally recorded by Cream. Ronson and Bowie had already covered this track live 20 years earlier, whilst touring as Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars. He also played lead guitar on the Morrissey-penned "I Know It's Gonna Happen Someday".
His second and third solo albums were Play Don't Worry in 1975, and Heaven and Hull in 1994. The latter set was only partly completed at the time of Ronson's death, and was released posthumously. Artists involved with the album included Bowie, John Mellencamp, Joe Elliott, Ian Hunter, Chrissie Hynde, and Martin Chambers.
Besides Bowie and Hunter, Ronson went on to work as a musician, songwriter and record producer with many other acts. He did not restrict his influence behind the recording desk to just established acts. His production work appears on albums by more obscure artists, such as Payolas, Phil Rambow and Los Illegals, The Mundanes and Italian band Moda. Ronson produced The Visible Targets, a Seattle, Washington-based group, on their 1983 five track EP, "Autistic Savant". In 1985 he produced and played on the four song EP "Stillwell Avenue" with the NYC based band XDAVIS.
Ronson was also a member of Bob Dylan's "Rolling Thunder Revue" live band, and can be seen both on and off-stage in the film of the tour. He made a connection with Roger McGuinn during this time, which led to his producing and contributing guitar and arrangements to McGuinn's 1976 solo album Cardiff Rose.
In 1982, he participated on lead guitar in a short-lived band with Hilly Michaels on drums and Les Fradkin on bass guitar. One of their recordings from this group, "Spare Change", appeared on the Fradkin's 2006 album, Goin' Back. In 1987, Ronson made an appearance on a record by The Toll. Ronson played lead on the band's song, "Stand in Winter", from the album The Price of Progression.
In 1991, Ronson produced the Swedish cult band The Leather Nun's album, Nun Permanent, adding backing vocals and guitar overdubs on several tracks. At the end of the production, during a short visit to his sister in London, Ronson was diagnosed with cancer. In 1992 he produced Morrissey's album, Your Arsenal. The same year, Ronson's final high-profile live performance was his appearance at The Freddie Mercury Tribute Concert. He played on "All the Young Dudes" with Bowie and Hunter; and "Heroes" with Bowie. Ronson's final recorded session was as a guest on the 1993 Wildhearts album Earth vs the Wildhearts, where he played the guitar solo on the song "My Baby is a Headfuck". Liner notes for the Earth vs The Wildhearts album give credit to Mick Ronson for guitar on the track "My Baby Is A Headfuck" and the "album is dedicated to Mick Ronson".
Ronson died of liver cancer on April 29, 1993 at age 46.

TMO Epilogue
Tumblr media
“Love, that is the only thing that can occupy and fill eternity. In the infinite, the inexhaustible is requisite.” - Victor Hugo
Warnings: fluff and mild angst
Word Count: 3.1k
Summary: You and Tom attempt to navigate your shocking revelation.
A/N: wowie! thank you all for the love and interest in this series! I’ll be posting the alternate epilogue soon but I hope you all enjoy this one <3
The Birth
“Good job, love, keep pushing, oh my god, okay, I think I see the head,” Tom says, pulling away from your hand.
You let out a shrill cry, pushing with all of your strength, “you think?”
You start to panic, feeling overwhelmed as your body feels like it’s getting torn up from the inside out.
“That’s it love! You got it! He’s, oh my god, he’s here,” Tom shouts, looking up at you with wide eyes as you finally push your baby out, small cries filling your guest bedroom.
“Oh my god,” you sigh, your head falling back onto the pillow and your eyes closing shut as Tom cuts the umbilical cord, swaddling your child in a blanket as he continues to cry.
“He looks just like you,” Tom says as your knees fall shut and Tom brings the baby over to you.
You force your eyes back open, smiling as Tom sits next to you, holding your kid in his arms.
“Tom, oh god we don’t even have a name for him yet,” you whine as you take him into your arms, a part of you, 50% of your DNA, a beautiful child that is yours, yet you haven’t even come up with a name for him yet. Your mind starts to race with intruding thoughts, that you’re going to be a bad mother. That going through with the pregnancy was a horrible idea. Even your mother probably had a name for you before she gave birth to you.
“It’s okay, he won’t even remember today, what do you think we should name him?” Tom asks, slowly wiping your forehead with a towel.
“Trevor,” you reply. The name comes out of nowhere, you aren’t even sure you said it until Tom repeats the name twice.
“The name we came up with when we first met,” Tom smiles, “it’s perfect.”
“Hi Trevor, I’m your mommy, and this is your daddy, and we love you so much my sweet boy,” you smile, feeling tears well in your eyes.
You finally felt like you things were falling into place, even though you had worries, that you might fall into the same rut your mother fell into, that Tom is 10 times the man your father is, and he would be there for you in a way your father never was.
Looking down at Trevor with Tom’s arm around your shoulder, you feel like your life is just beginning.
***
9 Months Old
Tom and you are sitting on opposite ends of the living room, you with Trevor’s soft blue blanket, Tom holding onto Trevor as his legs begin to kick up.
You’ve been waiting for this day for a month or so, Trevor’s first steps.
“Come on Trev, you got this,” you praise, watching as Trevor gets solid footing on one foot, his hands reaching out in front of him to pick himself up.
“Should I let go? I don’t want him to fall on his face,” Tom worries, his eyebrows turning in.
You nod, “doing so great sweetie,” you praise Trevor, “come to mommy!”
Tom let’s go of Trevor, letting him begin to walk on his own.
“Mom-ma!” Trevor shouts, feet padding along the carpet, hands reaching out toward you.
The space is small and Trevor gets to you in no time, both of you falling into a fit of giggles as he crawls into your lap, tugging at your shirt.
“Do you want to try walking over to daddy now?” you laugh, helping Trevor stand up again.
“Dadda!” Trevor shouts, clapping his hands together as he begins to walk toward Tom.
You both watch in glee as Trevor continues to walk across the room toward Tom, clapping happily when he got to him and Tom snugly wrapped his arms around him, pulling him into his chest.
“Next step, swimming,” Tom chuckles, both of you grinning as Trevor gets up and starts moving around the living room again.
“If the ocean tide doesn’t wash us all away by then,” you murmur, knowing Tom nor Trevor can hear you. You say it in a joking tone, but you can’t help but feel the smallest part of yourself wonder how life would be different if it was actually Tom that you killed.
***
3 Years Old
“What are we supposed to do, Tom? We’re wanted by the FBI,” you say with a low voice, trying not to wake up Trevor.
He’s sleeping soundly with his blanket curled in his fist, the first day on his big kid bed, one that’s still low on the ground but with only a bed rail instead of four sides like his old crib.
“You’re the one who tried to kill me!” Tom shouts as you shut Trevor’s door quietly, scolding Tom for being so loud.
“Why do you think I tried to, Tom?!” You shout back, stalking down the hallway toward your bedroom.
“I don’t know,” Tom groans, his hand running across his face in frustration as you sit on the bed and he follows.
“I knew something was wrong the moment we got back to Idaho. It wasn’t confirmed until I booked a room at the hotel across from my place and I saw the agents setting up shop in my house.”
“So you should have told me! We could have run away together!”
“Why are we talking about this now?” You grumble, turning away from him.
“Because this is the first time we have had a chance to talk, to really talk since Trevor was born. And every time, every single time I attempt to talk to you about it, you ignore me, you change the subject.”
“Why do you think I change the subject Tom?” you cry, feeling his arms wrap around you from behind, pulling you tight into his chest as you sob.
“Shhh, it’s okay, we don’t have to-,”
“You tried to kill me first. You think I- you think I didn’t stay up night after night trying to come up with some way to keep you safe, make sure you didn’t suffer that didn’t end with me killing you?”
“I never meant to hurt you, y/n, to try to kill you. That day, you have to understand, it was the worst day of my life.”
“It wasn’t by chance, you know, loving you,” you reply, turning your head to kiss Tom’s cheek, “it was both the best and worst decision I’ve ever made.”
“What do you mean?”Tom asks, furrowing his eyebrows as you turn in his lap, resting your head against his chest so you can feel the rise and fall of his heartbeat.
“Do you think I-, when I met you, I knew I shouldn’t have done anything. I know I shouldn’t have let myself get caught up in any feelings. I fucking knew this but I chose to fall for you anyway,”
“Why would you chose to fall for me of all people?” Tom asks, feeling himself fumble with the idea of all the reasons why you should love someone else.
“You- you treated me not like I was some fragile broken girl, not like I needed to be fixed or put in place. You treated me, you still treat me with respect and dignity and that’s all I’ve ever asked for.”
“That’s just being a decent human…” Tom trails off.
“Shhh, ‘m not finished!” You kiss his nose as he falls back against the bed and takes you with him, “and the way you talked to Harry, about Harry, I know we’re both bad people and have done horrible, inexcusable things no matter the reasons we try to dig up, but the way you talked to him, I was sure that you’re not just a decent human, you’re an amazing one.”
“You don’t need to boost my ego, it’s just, I thought that we had things figured out, in the lake on the way back from Boston. I thought that no matter what happened when we got back from there, we would be together.”
“The FBI, I knew they were onto us after the fire… But when I talked to Jake one day, in this small coffee shop bakery thing, this guy was looking at us, I knew he knew exactly who we were. I was honestly surprised we lasted so long before they tracked us down completely. Before they found our places and were going to arrest us.”
“So why didn’t you tell me?” Tom pleads, cupping your cheeks and rubbing his nose against yours, a small gesture he does to calm himself down from time to time.
“For my entire life I was never able to trust anyone. I was always alone in this world. Alone when my parents treated me as a burden, alone when I got caught up with Jake and that mess. When I met you, for the first time in my life I wasn’t alone.”
“Y/N, why didn’t you say anything?”
“Because! For the first time I wasn’t alone. Do you know how fucking terrifying that was for me? My entire life I went thinking I was always going to be alone, that I’d never be able to find someone who loved me, who I could love back. And you come along and change my entire mindset.”
“I did that?”
You swallow thickly and nod, “you did that. God, Tom, I love you so much I was terrified by it.”
“I love you,” Tom replies, “I love you, I love you.”
You smile softly at Tom’s repetition, knowing it makes him feel safe, makes him feel whole, and in return, it makes you feel safe.
“But you aren’t terrified by it anymore?” Tom asks, brushing a strand of hair from your eyes.
“No, it’s… It’s the best thing that’s ever happened to me… Other than Trevor,” you pick your head up to listen to the gentle snores of your child as Tom grins.
“When do you think it’s too early to teach him how to swim?” Tom chuckles, holding you tight to his chest as you begin to fall asleep.
“The water right outside our back door probably means we should teach him now,” you mumble sleepily.
“Now?” Tom says, the skin of his knuckles brushing up and down your back, “I think it’s a little late for that.”
“Shhh,” you squeeze your eyes shut, “we need to get him swim trunks.”
“How about Scooby doo ones?”
***
6 Years Old
The best part about going into hiding as a fugitive, nobody was looking for a mom with a child. Trevor was the best thing that has ever happened to you. He looked so much like Tom when he was born, it was insane. He had his eyes, his nose, his uniquely large ears. When he was born, in the bathtub of the house you bought, Tom cradled him in his arms and neither of you really thought of names before that moment. The moment when you rested your head on Tom’s shoulder and he held your child in his arms for the first time. The name came to you easily, as you remembered the first few days you and Tom spent together. You remembered Tom’s smooth midwestern accent, his alias.
“Trevor,” you whisper, one hand cupping the back of your baby’s head as he cooed.
“Trevor, Trevor Samuel Johnston, has a nice ring to it, doesn’t it?” Tom says later that night as you fall asleep to the sound of ocean waves.
“Sounds perfect.”
You bought this place after you found out the FBI was tracking you and Tom. Inconspicuous, creaking blue shutters and an eggshell colored exterior, a porch with a rocking chair. It was tucked away amongst other houses that all looked the same but slightly unique in the small village in the Marshall Islands. Nobody questioned the three of you, one small happy family starting their life here.
Tom is out grocery shopping while Trevor does his morning newspaper run, ending back up at your house.
You press the cool glass of the pressed flower into your palm as you wait for Trevor to come riding back down the cobblestone path.
“Mom! What kinda flower is that?” Trevor shouts, waving at you as he tosses his bike to the side.
He holds out his hands and you let him cup the flower in his hand for a moment. He took in the dark purple that curled along the curve of each petal, the pinkish red as it neared the core, turning to a light greenish yellow.
“It’s called a black hollyhock.”
“What’s it mean?”
“It’s about taking a situation in which you feel powerless, and letting the energy of the flower transform you.”
“It’s pretty,” he smiles, handing it back to you.
“Come on in, let’s get you something to cool down, how was the newspaper run today?” you press the cool glass into your palm, flipping it over a few times.
“It was good, can I have an ice pop?” He asks excitedly as you run your hands through his curly brown hair.
That was something you missed about Tom, ever since that night he kept his head shaved. He was gorgeous either way, but you understood why he needed to keep his head shaved.
It helped him feel safe, your names were still on the FBI’s most wanted list, any second they could show up at your doorstep, arresting both you and Tom.
So if Tom wanted to shave his hair, hell, you’d let him shave it.
“Of course, what kind?” you ask, following Trevor into the house.
“Blue raspberry! Duh! Our favorite!” Trevor laughs, holding his arms up when you reach the kitchen counter.
You lift him up, nodding, “our favorite.”
His legs swing out in front of him as you search the freezer for two ice pops, tearing both of them open for the two of you.
“Cheers!” Trevor laughs, tapping his ice pop against yours.
“Cheers,” you laugh along, finding comfort in the blue food dye that stains both of your lips as you wait for Tom to come home.

8 Years Old
“What’s all this?” You giggle, squeezing Tom’s hand as he pushes open the sliding back door of your house.
“A date,” Tom says, picking up the picnic basket from the porch after he dragged you outside.
“But Trevor-,”
“Trevor is asleep, plus, I got the baby monitor out of the attic and if anything happens, if he wakes up,” he shakes the picnic basket, indicating that the other part of the baby monitor is inside of it.
“Date night,” you grin.
“Been wanting to do this for years,” Tom chuckles, guiding you down to your private beachfront, “so, I’ve got sparkling cider,” he says, pulling out a big beach towel, the one you always lay on while Tom and Trevor swim.
You take a seat next to Tom, shrugging off your cover up and tightening your bikini top.
“My favorite,” you smile, and it’s genuine. You didn’t keep alcohol in the house, it was a small argument and an issue after Trevor was first born, but you knew what Tom needed. He needed a place where he didn’t have to think of alcohol and the thing that took his family away from him. You could give him that, god, if there was one thing you could give Tom, it would be a safe space.
Tom pours both of you a glass, letting you rest your head on his shoulder.
“What’s this?” you ask, peeking at the fruit tucked away next to the baby monitor.
“Papaya,” Tom smiles, “your high school, uh, was it English?”
“History teacher.”
“History teacher said this place has the best papayas, ‘fraid we’ve been running around like crazy trying to start a life here for us, to make us as inconspicuous as possible, that we never got the chance to have the one thing that made you buy this home in the first place.”
“Thank you,” you mumble as Tom starts to cut open the papaya.
He feeds you the first piece, raising an eyebrow as your eyes crinkle and your face scrunches up.
“What is it? What’s wrong?” Tom asks, sitting up and bringing you with him.
“Mrs. Meade was so wrong about papaya being good,” you shake your head, placing the fruit down.
“No way,” Tom grabs a piece, wanting to try it for himself.
When he swallows his piece he coughs, clutching his chest as you rub his back.
“Told ya.”
“Mhm,” Tom groans, pulling you up.
“Where’re we going?” You ask, turning back to the baby monitor, “Trevor is-,”
“Trevor is fine,” Tom assures you, squeezing your hand three times.
“One second,” you say, breaking away from him and grabbing your glass, finishing off the sparkling cider.
“What’s that for?” Tom asks, pulling off his T-shirt and throwing it back on the towel.
“Papaya was incredibly disappointing,” you laugh, handing him his glass so he can wash away the taste as well.
You don’t shiver as you step into the water, it’s warm and inviting as Tom follows you out.
“I’ll never get over how great this ocean is,” you laugh, splashing around at the very clear water as Tom pulls you into his arms.
“It is pretty great huh?” Tom rubs his nose against yours, letting you rest your forehead against his shoulder as he holds you tightly to him, drifting further out to sea.
“How’d you know?” You murmur, “how’d you always know?”
“I know you better than you know yourself,” Tom replies, he knows what you’re talking about, neither of you need to voice it, “you’re the one person I know more than myself. You let me know you more than I know myself. Thank you.”
“Thank you.”
You’re grateful for him, for always being one step ahead of you, for choosing to be by your side after everything that’s happened.
Tom pulls you in for a papaya and sparkling cider flavored kiss, something you haven’t stopped thinking about since the cold lake in Utah almost nine years ago. You’re grateful that the rather repugnant fruit taste is almost disappeared from your taste buds.
“I love you,” he murmurs, keeping his lips against yours.
“I love you,” you reply, holding him tight in the warm water, the moonlight rippling off the waves.
“I love you,” Tom repeats, pulling you tight into his arms like he wishes he did that night almost nine years ago. Both of you wonder what your life would be like if he kept you safe all that time ago instead of pushing you away. But looking back on it, with one happy, healthy boy and the love of your life you wouldn’t have changed any of the moments leading up to get you to where you are right now.

if you’re taking request now, can I request a victor x mc where she’s freaked out and hides behind him?
Hi, working on the backlog of my requests, hope you like this, :)
Title: A knight in a black suitPairing: Victor x MCWords: 2,047
“Hey Boss, look over there, do you know who that is?” Kiki latched onto your arm trying to hide her excitement.
“Who are we looking at Kiki?” you say looking around at the sea of faces.
“Look, there, that actor, he was in that movie we all saw last week.”
“Oh really, I surprised you noticed there were other people in the movie apart from Kiro.” You laughed as Kiki shoved you playfully.
“He looked good, okay? And I noticed him because he’s an unknown, that was his first movie. It was purely a business observation.” Kiki pouted.
“Right I’ll go talk to him and see if we can get an interview at least.” you laughed.
“You’re the best boss!”
You waved over your shoulder at Kiki to show you acknowledged her words, a wry smile painted on your lips. Walking up to the actor you started running through in your head your interview proposal, rewording it mentally so that you’d guarantee his acceptance. You ran through a list of facts in your head, his name was Trevor, age: 25, brown hair, blue eyes, and as Kiki had said, before this movie he was an unknown actor only appeared as an unnamed extra on various TV shows. As you got closer to him, you caught his eye and smiled at him, and he broke away from his previous conversation to meet you halfway.
“Hi, I’m-“
“I know who you are, I loved the last season of Miracle Finder.” Trevor said grasping your hands tightly in his, and you couldn’t help blushing at the praise.
You and he spoke for a while and although he was a little more forward then you were used to, you chalked it up to his western roots. He was pleasant and kind, and surprisingly was quite knowledgeable about the production process, and he was happy to trade opinions with you. However, his conversation, did remind you of a certain CEO, especially when Trevor spoke about investments. Trying not to seem rude, you quickly cast your eyes around the room, hoping to maybe catch sight of the imposing man. Trevor was easy to talk to, and made lighthearted conversation about his industry and the other production aspects. However, when he decided to talk to you about the topic of investments and how large corporations invest in various shows, you were reminded that you hadn’t seen Victor all evening. Usually by now he would have made his way over to you, with some backhanded comment about looking after “idiots, who run around without decorum”, (with a smirk thrown in your direction).  But as you subtly glanced around the room, you couldn’t catch a glimpse of him, which surprised you as Victor seemed to command attention from all occupants whenever he walked into the room. It seems you were too distracted, as Trevor turned around to look at whatever direction you were staring off into, confusion clear on his face.
“Oh, I’m sorry-” you started tucking your hair behind your ear, “just thought I saw someone I knew.” you quickly apologised, hoping you didn’t offend Trevor with your inattentiveness, that would definitely not get you an interview.
Trevor flashed a smile at you, realising you were not tired of your conversation with him, when you felt a slight tap on your shoulder.
“Goldman!” you turned around startled, “I was wondering when LFG’s employees would turn up, I thought punctuality was your company’s biggest strength.” you playfully winked at Goldman and you shared a laugh.
Trevor cleared his throat and you stepped slightly to the left, allowing you to introduce Goldman to Trevor and vice versa. The three of you continued to make small talk, when the conversation quickly turned to LFG’s one and only CEO, Victor Li. Goldman obviously spoke only glowing praises concerning his boss, and you snorted rolling your eyes at his sycophantic nature. You thought you had done so quite subtly, but alas as you were Murphy’s Law’s favourite plaything, the one person you didn’t want to hear you, most definitely heard you.
“If you disagree with his statement, please do share with the rest of us.” Victor’s baritone voice caused you to freeze, and you turned slowly to face him, embarrassed flush painted on your face.
“Oh! Hi, Victor… fancy seeing you here.”
“I told you about this party, you knew I would be here, or did you forget, dummy.” Victor teased you, smirking in enjoyment at the way your cheeks puffed out in annoyance.
“I didn’t forget, I was looking for-” you quickly stopped yourself by placing both hands over your mouth, you face hot with shame, but the damage had already been done.
Victor arched an eyebrow and leaned close to your face, causing you breath to catch in your throat. Despite your annoyance, having Victor’s attractive face inches from yours was really not helping the oxygen reaching your brain to make any coherent comeback to Victor’s snide, “Looking for? Were you perchance looking for me, little idiot?”
After spluttering in denial, you decided to steer the conversation to take the focus off of yourself, you haltingly introduced Trevor to Victor, thinking that the two of them would get along due to shared interests. You were wrong. Trevor and Victor may have been smiling politely on the outside, the two of them were sizing each other up and as they shook hands you could feel the temperature drop in the room by several degrees, and you could swear you saw sparks flying off the two of them.
“So, Victor Li was it? Do you often seek out small time producers at social events?” you narrowed your eyes wondering why the friendly Trevor was challenging Victor so blatantly.
“Small time? LFG prides itself on treating all its employees with respect and the attention they deserve.” Victor voice was firm and steely, all the while still keeping a composed smile upon his face.
“Respect, I guess that’s pretty subjective for you, isn’t it?” Trevor continued to challenge Victor, and at this point you could feel a prickling of your nerves as you felt the need to defend your unconventional relationship with Victor, however Victor was one step ahead of you.
“Whatever you’ve seen, is clearly between me and her.” Victor said effectively ending this line of conversation, and stepping in front of you, as if shielding you from Trevor.
A tense and charged silence stretched between the group, and you and Goldman exchanged glances, before you could feel any more anxious, you grabbed Goldman by the arm and dragged him over to the refreshments in the corner of the room. Both of you loaded a plate and moved a little off to the side, and Goldman breathed a sigh of relief as you slumped against the wall. At an exchanged sideways glance at each other, you both burst into laughter at your ridiculous escape from the situation.
“I thought he was going to punch him.” you laughed.
“Victor’s too professional for that…” Goldman started, “but yeah, I thought they were going to fight as well.”
You closed your eyes and exhaled slowly, suddenly the spacious room felt a little too crowded for your liking. You politely excused yourself to Goldman and stepped out of the ballroom into one of the many hallways surrounding it. Taking a deep breath, and stepping in front of a large bay window, you looked out into the night sky allowing the sight to calm you, when a hand landed on your shoulder, startling you greatly. You quickly spun around and placed your hand on your heart feeling it race under your skin.
“Oh, I didn’t mean to startle you.”
“Trevor?” for some reason knowing that he had followed you out of the ballroom, made your skin feel itchy and you took a subtle step backwards.
“I noticed you stepped out for a minute; I hope that Victor guy didn’t scare you off before we even got to dance.” he smiled charmingly at you but it only made you feel more uncomfortable.
Trying to be polite you tried to let him down easy, “No it wasn’t Victor, he never made me feel uncomfortable, I mean yeah he’s a little obtuse but he’s really a great guy,” You waved your hands in front of you, “I’m sure if you talk to him more you’ll see that…”
Trevor grabbed one of your hands and placed it on his chest, allowing him to close the distance between the two of you. You struggled as best you could, trying to create distance but also remain polite. It seems however that Trevor either was oblivious to your attempts or just chose to ignore them, you were hoping for the former as you knew you weren’t strong enough to fight him off by yourself.
“Come on, just one dance, Miss Producer…” Trevor moved in close so that his face was also inches from yours.
“Trevor you’re very kind but I don’t think I’m up for dancing tonight.” you disassembled.
Having Trevor’s face so close to yours, gave a very different feeling from when Victor’s face was close to yours. The uncomfortable feeling that had been prickling at your back, crawled its way up your spine, and you became desperate, you increased your struggle and Trevor tightened his grip on your wrist causing you to wince from the pain.
“I believe she told you ‘no’.” a deep baritone voice cut through the air.
You turned to Victor, with tears of joy in your eyes, Victor wrapped his hand around your wrist and in one quick movement he pulled you away from Trevor and to his side, where he wrapped his arm around your waist.
“Whatever you’ve seen, is between me and her.” Trevor mimicked Victor’s words from earlier, taking a haughty stance.
You felt a shiver run through you at Trevor’s attitude, when Victor turned to you, “You okay?” you could clearly see the concern in his eyes as he carefully looked over your face, analysing your features when you gave a shake of your head.
“Come on Victor, you’re not going to fight over some woman-” Trevor didn’t get to finish his sentence before Victor punched him in the face.
“How dare you!”
You gasped and covered your mouth in shock, before trying to restrain Victor, despite the level of rage that was flowing through his veins, Victor immediately placated as soon as your arms wrapped around one of his.
“Victor please, let’s just go… I can’t-” You choked on a sob at the end of the sentence, and Victor eyes widened before he wrapped his arms around your frame and gently led you away from Trevor.
Once you were a safe distance away from Trevor, Victor led you to sit in an alcove and gently rubbed his hand up and down your arms in order to stop the shaking.
“You sure you’re okay?” Victor asked gently.
Looking up at him you felt the dam inside you break, tears streamed down your face and you covered your face with your hands, sobbing profusely, whilst Victor’s hands hovered around you, with a helpless expression on his face.
“I can still feel it Victor! This ugly prickling feeling, I can’t get rid of it!” you raked your nails down your arms, causing Victor to see the bruises on your wrist caused by Trevor.
Victor wrapped his arms around you, drawing you into his warm embrace and rocked you slightly. “It’s okay I’ve got you.” he repeated softly into your ear.
You turned and threw your arms around Victor, burying your face in his neck, “I thought he was going to take me, like last time.” you whispered into his neck.
Victor knew that although your subconscious had buried the memories of the Black Swan experimentation in a place you couldn’t access them, the déjà vu had triggered a response from you. He knew better than to press you, so he just held you tightly in his arms until you calmed down, until your choking sobs became slight hiccups. Before vowing in a strong voice, that washed over you calming you completely.
“I told you before, and I’ll tell you as many times you need to hear it, I will never let them take you again.”

Could we finally have a tipping point in this time when racism is spotlighted with our racist President? After many incidents in just the past couple of weeks and everyone on edge with coronavirus, it has boiled over. Scary Clown threatens to start shooting as Minneapolis burns down. The market facilitation program has been helping small farmers over the last few years in a $28 billion bailout. Trump’s sanctions brought this on and the corona virus has made it worse.  Mostly the money has helped bankers and bigger farms. Much like the stimulus $ that was earmarked for small business, there are loopholes that screw up the ‘rules.’ The cap is not being followed like they may say because the $ is going to “investors” in the farm and often not the actual farmer who works on a smaller scale. A small farm run by family members may not get the bailout. It seems to be more important to get a good lawyer who can manipulate the paperwork.  Sad that taxpayer $ is used this way.

Do you know of any fics that have John at the Surgery in them? It wasn't really explored in the show so... it can be just like one scene within a larger fic, but I haven't been able to find any fics with this. TIA
Hey Lovely!
Ahhhh you know, I have a lot of fics where he’s at the surgery, but I’ll be damned if I can remember them all!!! Here’re the ones I do remember! <3 Please add your own fics, my friends, if your fic is in the Surgery!

Excerpts from Purgatory by reapersun, what_alchemy (E, 5,829 w., 1 Ch. || Post-TRF, Doctor John, Reunion Fic, Rough Sex, Angry Sex, Bottomlock, Fic with Pics)  – John serves community service in homeless shelters for chinning the superintendent. Unbeknownst to him, the Homeless Network has his back.
The doctor is in by PlainJane (E, 7,581 w., 1 Ch. || Omegaverse || Sex Therapist, Anal, Hand Jobs, Frottage, Virgin Sherlock) – Sherlock is a young alpha with an aversion to his cycle. John is a gender medicine specialist. Nothing could possibly go wrong... Part 1 of Doctors and detectives
The Acronym by DancingGrimm (T, 15,057 w., 12 Ch. || Humour) – "'Bee Ay Em Eff'. Hm, that's a new one on me. Do you know what it means, Sherlock?" John might not know what it means, but there are many little ways in which he proves the acronym suits him.
The Midas Touch by flawedamythyst (E, 32,231 w., 1 Ch. || Magical Realism, John has a Magical Cock, Dub Con, Healer John) – John Watson has a medical condition that means everyone he sleeps with is instantly healed of all illness and injury. This causes complications when Sherlock breaks his arm, and even more complications when Sherlock falls in love with him. Yes, this is a story where John has a literal magic healing cock. It's a lot less cracky than you're probably imagining. Warning: Contains complex issues of sexual consent, although not between Sherlock and John.
A Week is Just Seven Days Isn't It? by scifigrl47 (T, 39,906 w., 4 Ch. || Humour, Friendship/Bromance, Stroppy/Bored Sherlock, Undercover/Army John, Texting, Pining-ish Sherlock, John Whump) – When John heads overseas for a week, Sherlock's forced to fend for himself. It goes about as well as anyone could have anticipated. Which is to say, very, very poorly. Don't worry, things'll be fine in just seven days.
The Hollow Woman by ScopesMonkey (M, 51,335 w., 22 Ch. || Post-TRF, Major Character Death, Mystery, Romance, Friendship, Family, Angst, Crime, Reunion, First Kiss / Time, Nightmares, Doctor John, Jealous Sherlock, Jealous John, BAMF John, Angry John, Dub-Con, Rough Sex, Bottomlock, Possessive John, Villain Mary, Open Ending) – Forced to return to London sooner than expected, Sherlock falls into a case too close to home. Part 1 of the Hollowverse series
Gold Rush by ShirleyCarlton (E, 71,783 w., 17 Ch. || Post S3 / No Mary, Friends to Lovers, Mentions of Past Sexual Abuse, First Kiss, Case Fic, Slow Burn, Alternating POV, Switchlock, Angst with Happy Ending, Marriage Proposal, Implied/Referenced Child Abuse, Abduction, Anxious/Insecure Sherlock, Miscommunication, Emotional Lovemaking) – John has divorced Mary and pops round to 221B one evening to find Sherlock in the middle of a case. As Sherlock tries to find the identity of a young woman’s stalker, John realises he can no longer deny his feelings for Sherlock – which then, to their befuddlement, turn out to be mutual. Shy kisses and tentative embraces ensue. But will Sherlock be able to cast off a shadow from his past that he thinks might prevent John from wanting to stay?
Kintsukuroi by sussexbound (E, 91,823 w., 20 Ch. || S4 Compliant / Post-TLD, Grief / Mourning, PTSD, Internalized Homophobia, Therapy, Past Abuse, Alcohol Abuse, Nightmares, Emotional Hurt/Comfort, Depression, Anxiety, Bed Sharing, Love Confessions, Cuddling, Suicidal Ideation, Masturbation, Minor Character Death, Sexting, Frottage, Inexperienced Sherlock, Rimming / Anal / BJ’s, Emotional Turmoil, Finding Each Other) – “I love you.” Sherlock sees the words hit John with almost physical force. He reels back a little, jaw twitching and eyes filling. “I love you,” he repeats, a little softer, a little more gentle, as earnest as he possibly can. Because they’ve been teetering on the brink of this thing for years, and it had become painfully obvious over the last few months that they were at a tipping point. This had to happen. Now it has. Now they can see where they end up. The tears in John’s eyes spill over, and he wipes at them angrily. “Do you even know what that means?”
Against the Rest of the World by SilentAuror (E, 151,714 w., 20 Ch. || PODFIC AVAILABLE || Post-TRF, Hiatus Fic, POV First Person Sherlock, Present Tense, First Kiss/Time, Big Brother Mycroft, Escaping from Capture, Soft Sherlock, Toplock, Insecurity, Infidelity, Travelling, Introspection, Pining Sherlock, Depression, Fantasies, Yearning for the Past, PTSD Sherlock, Suicidal Ideation) – Sherlock has been away from London for nine hundred and twelve days and counting, and has no idea what sort of reception to expect when he finally returns.
The Quiet Man by ivyblossom (E, 157,369 w., 58 Ch. || Post-TRF, John First POV, Grief/Mourning, Angst, Present Tense, Imaginary Sherlock) – "Do you just carry on talking when I'm away?"
MARKED FOR LATER (tagged with “Surgery”)
Milk, the Flu, and Harry by Inactive Account (sassybleu) (M, 1,609 w., 1 Ch. || Insecure Sherlock, Understanding John, Angst with Happy Ending, Sherlock’s Called ‘Freak’) – John leaves Sherlock for a few days (angsty) John says things he doesn’t mean (“you’re a freak”) Sherlock thinks he deserves it (he’s insecure) and packs John’s bags for him while he’s gone. John is to blame (bad day at surgery-Sherlock being Sherlock; he’s frustrated and snaps)
Inhale With Ease by Vulpesmellifera (E, 25,989 w., 8 Ch. || S4 Divergence, Covid-19/Quarantine, Jealous John, Love Letters, Victor Trevor, Divorce, Angst with Happy Ending) – In the years after Vivian Norbury's capture, life seems to work out just as John planned.
Turned - Part I : Queen and Country by saintscully (E, 76,008 w., 20 Ch. || HLV Divergence / No TAB, Graphic Sherlock/OC, Spy Sherlock, PTSD, Internalized Homophobia, Army Homophobia, Emotional Infidelity, Physical Infidelity, Slow Burn, Emotional Manipulation, Eventual Johnlock) – Moriarty’s message never gets broadcasted. The airplane taking Sherlock away never returns. As rumours begin to swirl about a British POW found alive in Gaza ten months later, Mycroft shows up at John’s surgery with some good news: Sherlock is alive, and he’s coming back. In this story, inspired by ‘Homeland’ and ‘Prisoners of War’, John and Sherlock are left with no choice but to re-examine everything about their relationship since Sherlock’s fall. Part 1 of the Turned series
You Go To My Head Series by 7PercentSolution and J_Baillier (E, 937,347+ w. across 22 Stories || Series WiP || Surgeon AU || Medical Realism, Autism Spectrum, Anaesthetist John / Neurosurgeon Sherlock, Friends to Lovers, Pining, Addiction, Angst, Slow Burn, PTSD, Pining, Insecurity, Additional Tags Under Link) – This series is an alternate universe one, featuring the exciting medical and romantic adventures of doctors Watson and Holmes. (I haven’t read this one, but JUDGING by the topic of these stories, I imagine there’s a lot of surgery scenes lol)

Sherlock S4
Random Sherlock ex-fan: “Why does Lestrade call Sherlock a ‘good man’? Season 4 was horrible, and Sherlock didn’t do anything to show that he’s a good man!  I will pretend Season 4 doesn’t exist while believing that Sherlock’s characterization was completely ruined!”
...
...
1. TST - when AJ fights over Sherlock for the Thatcher bust, AJ demands to Sherlock Mary’s whereabouts. Sherlock’s response: “She’s my friend. She’s under my protection.” Despite Mary shooting him and how it would be easier to give Mary up to AJ so that Sherlock can have John to himself, Sherlock remains loyal and protects Mary.
2. TST - Despite John blaming him for Mary’s death and throwing such cruel words, Sherlock still opts to come over to John’s house to check if he’s all right. And despite the unfairness of Molly telling Sherlock that John does not want to see him, Sherlock respects his wishes and leaves and plans to follow Mary’s videos to save John.
3. TLD - Do I even need to reiterate that when John was crying, Sherlock still embraced John and comforted him when by all counts, Sherlock should have realized how much John betrayed him when he assaulted Sherlock in the morgue. But no, Sherlock was more concerned about John and didn’t even request any sort of apology. I find it rather significant that much of the Sherlock fandom view faking his suicide and making John watch a huge betrayal on Sherlock’s part, but when John beats Sherlock to a bloody pulp, they don’t view it as a betrayal, but rather, “it’s understandable”.
4. When Sherlock calls Molly to tell her “I love you”, he is so distraught that he smashes the coffin and is clearly breaks down for how he said those words to Molly as part of Eurus’ game and feels guilty for playing with Molly’s emotions like that (despite the fact that Eurus threatened to kill Molly so it was for a good reason). Remember the S2 episode “A Scandal in Belgravia”? Sherlock verbally humiliates Molly at the Christmas party and doesn’t really offer much guilt besides a trite apology for embarrassing her. If he feels absolutely wrecked with guilt for telling Molly that he loves her, Sherlock obviously has a bigger conscience than he did in S2.
5. TFP - Remember when John, Sherlock, and Mycroft were held together in the cells in Sherrinford and Eurus gave them the option to use the gun to shoot either John or Mycroft after calling Molly? Sherlock agonizes over the decision, and despite Mycroft selling him out to Moriarty and goading Sherlock into shooting him by insulting John Watson, Sherlock refuses and tries to swallow the gun and shoot himself via suicide. Call me crazy, but despite how horrible Mycroft and John have been to Sherlock, if you’re still willing to commit suicide to save their lives after being assaulted and demeaned, then Sherlock’s attempt shows he loves and feels for both of them deeply even though the feeling isn’t mutual.
6. TFP - Eurus has been revealed to be the girl on the plane calling on the phone. Sherlock sees Eurus vulnerable and alone in her old room of the Musgrave manor? Does Sherlock berate her? Spit on her? Make her feel worthless? Assaults her?  Takes vengeance for how she killed Victor Trevor? No. Sherlock comforts his sister, hugs her, and tells her she’s not alone. Despite the end when she’s back in Sherrinford, Sherlock makes a point to tell his parents Eurus is still alive, convinces the family to visit Eurus, and there’s even a shot of Sherlock and Eurus playing violin music together as a duet while the family looks on. Eurus may never live to see outside again, but Sherlock, despite having all reasons to hate her, forgives his sister and makes it a point to visit her and remind her that she still has her family.
So, despite your misgivings on S4, Sherlock did become a good man and there are some of us in the Sherlock fandom who did like season 4 and felt that it was a beautiful progression of Sherlock Holmes.

WRITE US SOME THIBGS DARN IT Rudyard/Victor
Imagine the possibilities! | Accepting!
The night before Victor’s unwanted wedding, he and Rudyard chance upon each other as Victor wanders away from his (equally unwanted) stag party and Rudyard is about to get kicked out of the bar at a STIFED conference. They sneak away and spend the night reminiscing, catching up, and apologizing for having lost touch. When Victor starts to break down that he’s sorry he’s getting married and they’ve missed their chance together, Rudyard tells him, “Don’t be ridiculous. You can’t marry that horrid woman if you’re already married.” and they elope. Consequences? Who cares?
I keep thinking about Calliope as Rudyard’s Actual Daughter and I’m imagining this brilliant, headstrong, and curious girl going through her dad’s belongings after the divorce/death of her mother (I actually imagine she’s been out of the picture A LONG WHILE but I digress). Calliope stumbles across Rudyard and Victor’s old letters to each other from their teenage years and, wanting to see her father happy again, imitates his handwriting and messages Victor about how much he (Rudyard) has missed him and invites him to come to Piffling for a vacation. Little does Calliope know that Victor has also just gone through his own, messy divorce and an escape with the love of his life is precisely what he wants. Too bad no one prepared Rudyard for Victor Trevor on his doorstep, confessing that he has also thought of him every single day for the last twenty years...
There’s a world where Rudyard and Victor met at boarding school, where their respective fathers sent them in hopes that they’d stop being so embarrassing. They only succeed in embarrassing their families further when they fall in love. Somehow, this only makes school better.
I hate that my brain keeps suggesting that Victor and Rudyard have an affair during Victor’s marriage, but it just keeps suggesting clandestine meetings on “business trips”, where they spend weekends talking through their respective lonelinesses and giving each other bad advice for dealing with it and making love tenderly because no one back home treats them with tenderness... but I feel like Victor takes his vows Too Seriously for this shit and Rudyard does not take kindly to being a homewrecker. So I don’t know where this one is going.
REINCARNATED LOVERS AU!! Victor and Rudyard have been crossing paths for lifetimes, trying to get it right. Finally, this is the lifetime they will.
Literally, all of WO canon except Rudyard and Victor are a happily married couple who get on Chapman’s nerves for having all the affection and romance and normalcy he envies and craves.

The reason why nobody wants to play with LeBron James.
LeBron James had to escape to Miami for the first time to finally play with two other stars in Dwyane Wade and Chris Bosh. What stars at their best would they have left to join him in northeastern Ohio? Nobody registers for that if they have other options.
Leaving LeBron for the first time, the Cavaliers reloaded through the draft with two No. 1 picks. But they exchanged one of them (for Kevin Love), and the other (Kyrie Irving) decided he did not want to deal with the limbo either. of LeBron. Looking at another relatively empty wardrobe and knowing very well the dark prospects of filling it, LeBron ran to a team and a city that sold themselves.
So now that he's in the warm city of Los Angeles with a four-year contract, the longest since he traveled to Miami, why have we seen and heard that there are more stars who are reluctant to join forces with LeBron?
As a result, based on conversations with more than a dozen players, there are several reasons. Perhaps the most obvious, is that they become a role player with LeBron.
That's perfectly fine for someone like Chandler, a 36-year veteran who protects the hoop who took the opportunity to escape Phoenix and take his curtain with his hometown, the Lakers, next to, arguably, the most physically talented player of the world.
However, when it comes to players at their best, there has been more "no thanks". Paul George chose to stay in Oklahoma City this summer after having previously talked about how much he would love to play for the Lakers. Jimmy Butler, in his trade suit to the Timberwolves before being transferred to the 76ers, allegedly had the Knicks, Nets and Clippers on his list: three of the four teams in New York or LA with maximum salary potential.
"If you're a younger player like a Kawhi, trying to match him with LeBron James really does not make sense." Kawhi likes to have the ball in his hands, control the offense, dictate the pace with his post-ups, that's how he He plays the game, a lot of young players are developing that ability, they do not need another player. "
But LeBron may need that at this stage of his career. After Irving forced an exchange with the Boston Celtics two summers ago, James dragged the Cavs to the Finals for the fourth time in a row, but was captured by the Warriors. If he expects to compete with the Warriors again, it is clear that he needs help, especially now that he is on the Golden State side.
"If I were a free agent, I'd have to consider everything," veteran swingman Trevor Ariza said. "But my role is different from that of PG and Kawhi, they ask them to do different things than they ask of me, guys like [LeBron], why would they want to play with someone who does the same things? They would like to play somewhere else. "
The Lakers structured their salary cap to make sure they would have space next summer for a player with maximum salary, whether it comes through a free agency or an exchange. League sources say that when James became convinced that Irving could not be persuaded to stay in Cleveland, he suggested to the Cavs headquarters that he hand Irving to the Blazers for All-Star point guard Damian Lillard. The Cavs never called the Blazers, but James 'interest has led to speculation about the Lakers' exchange for Lillard.
"I love where I am," said Lillard. "I play for a big organization, I'm not looking for anything, I think we'll complement each other, but the only way that happens is if my team decides they do not want me anymore, I'm trying to build something here."
Whether because newly minted stars like Victor Oladipo and Jayson Tatum took LeBron to seven games or the Warriors swept it, the rising star class does not seem intimidated by it. They could respect it, but they do not fear it.
Leonard has flatly refused to discuss what he could do if he becomes a free agent next summer, but he does not see James as a kind of measuring stick.
"What else do I have to prove?" he asks. "He beat me in the Finals, we came back and we beat him." So you do not have anything else to try? "Just when we play it, try to win the game, that's all."
However, it is possible that other players at this point are not willing to change their stardom for the chance to win a championship with LeBron because that would also mean winning one for LeBron. As one explorer said: "Some stars look at him and say: 'Why do I want to add something to his legacy?'"
That is in fact the enigma. None of the players approached this story, both the stars and the support cast types, bothered that James' stardom "absorb all the oxygen in the room," as expressed by an Eastern Conference vice president. But there is little doubt that they would have to transform and accept less important roles than they enjoy now if they join the Lakers.
Durant also noticed that the stifling attention of the media around James does not help either.
Tumblr media
"There's so much enthusiasm to be around LeBron from other people," Durant said. "He has so many fanboys in the media, even the rhythm writers just flattered him, I'm like, we're playing basketball here, and it's not even about basketball at certain points, so I understand why nobody would want to be in that environment because it's toxic, especially when the attention is of bulls - t attention, fluff It's not the fault of LeBron at all, it's just the fact that you have a lot of groupies in the media that they love to hang on every word. play basketball ".
What comes with that is the knowledge that if the team wins, it will be credited primarily to James; and if the team loses, it will be blamed on everyone around it.
"It's the LeBron effect," says Raptors guard Kyle Lowry. "He puts a lot of pressure on you, but it also takes away a lot of pressure, you know what you're getting, he's earned it, but he's human, if you're a strong enough personality, you can handle it."
Ariza made another suggestion: "The media should change the narrative, make the superstar a superstar." In other words, do not automatically blame the cast when a team falls short. Sometimes it's the superstar that fell short.
That kind of scrutiny is amplified by being in Los Angeles, said Spurs forward Pau Gasol, who won two championships with the Lakers.
"If you succeed with the Lakers, you will be loved forever," Gasol said. "But there is also tension, pressure and drama like nowhere else, there are dozens of media outlets that are constantly looking for a story, it depends on who you are and what you are made of, but if you succeed, it is sweet. .
LeBron is now on earth where dreams come true and a partner is waiting to blow up the NBA.

Hello! Do you know any good fics about John and Sherlock in covid lockdown together? I’m kinda done with real life lockdown (my country hasn’t started vaccinating yet) so I wanna flee in theirs :) Would be even better if it’s post season 4/with Rosie (I have a soft spot for toddler Rosie) and not explicit. Thanks in advance and I hope you’re doing fine!
Reply: Sure, I have a few. I’m just going to toss them all in regardless of rating because there aren’t that many, in case others are interested. Also including a couple where they are in lockdown in separate places but find a way to “be together.”
COVID-19 Lockdown Fics
an experiment in social distancing by simplyclockwork (2K, E, Johnlock) Sherlock and John explore the less G-rated potential of social distancing through video chat.
Collateral Impact by BakerTumblings (32K, T, Johnlock) Ever think about what it might've been like on Baker Street, for John being medical, and what might have crossed his mind? Some short, random COVID 19 thoughts.
Fourteen Days by Ranowa (6K, T, Johnlock) Sherlock does not do well, cooped up at home.John does even worse than Sherlock.Sherlock, therefore, devises a plan for immediate action.
In His Care by BeautifulFiction (20K, T, Johnlock) John catches Covid-19, and it's up to Sherlock to take care of him within the sanctuary of Baker Street.
It's a rhythm he can live with - just enough adrenaline highs to balance out the drudgery of a normal bloke's life.Until a pandemic, and Victor Trevor, arrive in London.
Putting Up Shelves by khorazir (11K, M, Johnlock) Sherlock claims to be an expert at putting up shelves. John gets the totally wrong idea. DIY, awkwardness and some soul-searching ensue. And some shelves are put up ...
The Secret of Hazel Grange by SilentAuror (18K, E, Johnlock) John has a secret, and Sherlock is bothered. Trapped together at Baker Street during the lockdown, the tension only grows worse as Christmas draws nearer...
The Source of Light by bookjunkiecat (4K, T, Johnlock) During the outbreak of the virus, John, as medical personnel, is essential on the medical frontlines. This means a necessary separation from his loved ones. Stretched thin, exhausted, he nevertheless makes time for a Skype call with Sherlock and Rose. Even though all he wants is to finally tell Sherlock how much he loves him, now isn't the time. Circumstances, however, don't always work as we expect.
There is also an AO3 collection (which includes many of the above) for the topic with a whole lot more, including lots of shorter, lower rated ones: Isolated Johnlock

Title: at last, sunrise
Synopsis: Rapunzel gets kidnapped, Varian gets adopted, and a couple of evil hoodlums get what’s coming to them. All in all, it’s a good day.
Notes: I mentioned in my fic daybreak of the victor that Rapunzel sees Varian as her little brother, and I kind of wanted to write more on that? So here, have this—fluff, humor, feels, and sibling bickering/bonding all in one.
I’ve said this before, but—as much as I adore writing character development, it is so nice to explore the after, too.
Didn’t edit this nearly as much as I usually do—please let me know if you catch any mistakes!! (Also, I’m always open for feedback or constructive criticism, so please, don’t be afraid to tell me if you think something doesn’t quite fit!)
-
This fic is a prequel to two other fics of mine, daybreak of the victor (which can be read here or here) and the problem with politics (which can be read here and here). You don’t need to have read these fics to understand this one, but it does provide some background for the fic!
AO3 Link for this fic is here.

The tunnels beneath Corona’s castle are the stuff of nightmares. No matter how many times Rapunzel has been here, they are unchanged. Dark, damp, and as frightening as they were the first time she stepped through them. They are lit by a ghastly green glow, thin and weak, barely illuminating the floors, and even an extra lantern cannot quite pierce through the darkness that surrounds them. They are always full of dust and cobwebs, danger lurking around every corner. They are mystery incarnate, holding secrets and threats Rapunzel can only guess at, a place of constant peril.
“Princess,” Varian says, from behind her, voice dark with irritation, “if you don’t stop laughing, I’m going to have to gag you.”
They are walking side-by-side in the tunnels, Varian holding the lantern above their heads to light their path. On Rapunzel’s shoulder, Pascal is nestled into the hood of her cloak. At the moment, none of them are quite looking where they are going— Varian is giving Rapunzel the stink eye, Pascal is having conniptions, and Rapunzel is currently dying.
“Oh!” Rapunzel says, and slaps a hand across her mouth. She can’t quite stop giggling, however. “Oh, Varian, but their faces!”
A smile twitches at Varian’s lips before he ruthlessly squashes it, scowling at her so forcefully it looks more ridiculous than threatening. In the light of his lantern, she can see his cheeks go pink. “Stop, stop it, I was improvising!”
“It is I, Varian! The Alchemist! Come to enact my revenge!” Rapunzel mimics, and has to stop, she’s laughing so hard. She places both hands on her knees and wheezes. Tears bead in her eyes. “Oh, Pete! Stan! I’m so sorry!”
Varian elbows her. “Stop laughing!” His cheeks are bright red, the tips of his ears burning. “I had to improvise, okay? I didn’t know they would come back right when I was sneaking you out! You said Cassie was keeping them distracted!”
“No, no, it was good, really!” Rapunzel insists, and clasps a hand to her mouth before she can burst into hysterical giggles all over again. “Very convincing!” she squeaks out through her fingers. Her voice is high and strained.
Varian gives her a disgruntled look, unconvinced. “Somehow I do not believe you. Why is that?”
Rapunzel takes a deep breath, shaking her head to get her laughter back under control. “Oh, I’m sorry, Varian, it’s just…” She bites her lower lip, grinning into the back of her hand at the memory.
He’s not wrong about Cassandra, she had promised to fill in—alas, Pete and Stan must have somehow slipped her notice. Varian had reacted very well, all things considered, and it probably would have been okay, dramatic speech and all, except… well. Varian hadn’t been wearing his alchemist’s mask at the time, and instead of intimidating, he’d just looked rather panicked. A bit like a startled rabbit, honestly.
In other words— Adorable.
“It was just… so… you,” Rapunzel decides finally.
Varian reels back at this, overblown offense on his face. He waves both hands in the air, the lantern swinging wildly in his grip. “What! What’s that supposed to mean?”
Rapunzel wavers her hand back and forth in a vague gesture. “Just… you.”
He scowls at this, turning his back on her with a dark mutter under his breath. He raises his voice, sounding peeved, not looking at her. “…This is a kidnapping, you know. I’m kidnapping you. Just so we’re clear.”
Rapunzel looks down at her unbound wrists and unchained feet, the frying pan at her side. She looks back at Varian, at the comically serious expression on his face, the near pout he is just barely biting back.
Her choice is instantaneous. Rapunzel sags dramatically against the wall, as if her knees have gone weak, Pascal bawling fake tears on her shoulder. “Oh!” she says, pitching her voice high and breathy in pretend terror. “You dastardly fiend! You have captured me! Taken my only means of escape! Whatever shall become of me!”
“Why is it, that you’ve only gotten more embarrassing with age?” Varian complains, but he’s grinning despite himself. He shakes his head and shoves at her shoulder. “C’mon, move it, we gotta go! We’re burning lantern-light here, night won’t last forever.”
Rapunzel fakes a stumble and Pascal gives a nice theatrical wail. “Ah!” Rapunzel says, pretending to cower at the wall. It takes everything she has to not cackle at the look on his face. “Don’t hurt me, dear sir! Mercy! Mercy on me!”
Varian stares at her for a long moment in contemplative silence. “I’m gagging you,” he decides finally, and Rapunzel laughs so hard she falls over.
-
See, it starts like this: the separatist group of Saporia decides to threaten war.
To be more precise—the Separatists gather up their weapons, terrorize a few villages, somehow manage to get an alliance with a neighboring kingdom (Damn it, King Trevor, Rapunzel thinks), and then they make an ultimatum: give us land or else.
Now, this would be a very serious and not-at-all laughing matter sort of situation, if the Separatists hadn’t done it in such a way that Rapunzel is helpless to do anything other than stare at the missive and say, “But… that’s… so stupid?”
“Honey, they’ve infiltrated our kingdom.”
“But we know their base?”
Her father sighs at her. “They want us to attack them, Rapunzel. They have the treaty with Equis for that reason. If we crush them publicly, as a kingdom, without a crime that King Trevor can’t excuse—well. Equis can retaliate. It will break into full-blown war.”
Rapunzel arches an eyebrow. “Then… don’t attack them publicly. We can send men in disguise!”
Her father crosses his arms. “How many men? They’ll know it’s us if we send an army. Trevor—” He practically growls the name, “—will immediately suspect. We can’t send more than two or three people, and we most certainly can’t do that.”
The solution to that, of course, is simple. “Send me,” Rapunzel says without thinking, and gets promptly banished to her room.
Thanks, Dad.
Sometimes he’s good at respecting her choices, Rapunzel thinks absently, tapping her quill against her lips as she writes her letter. Other times, her father can be rather exhausting.
The difference between now and then is that nowadays, Rapunzel had no more patience for it. Her father has forbidden her from infiltrating and taking out the Separatist group? Fine. She’ll just sneak out and do it herself.
Of course, it never hurts to have help.
It’s easy, grabbing a hold of Varian—easier than it would have been a few years ago, before he returned to Corona. All she has to do is borrow Owl and send him off with a message, and then she meets Varian in a secret location a few days later. He always comes, when it is Rapunzel asking; she suspects lingering guilt.
Two days after she sends the message, she arrives at the Snuggly Ducking, a usual meeting place of theirs. Varian is already there waiting. He stands the moment he sees her, walking quickly to her side, pale with worried. “What is it?” he asks without any delay, searching her face. “What’s wrong?”
Rapunzel places a hand on his shoulder, and he jumps at the contact, blinking fast. “Calm down,” she tells him gently. “I’d have said if it was anything immediate. Come on, let’s sit. Have you eaten?”
Only after they order some food and drink, and Rapunzel has secured a private room from Lance, does she finally sit down to talk. The room is small, but secluded, the walls secure from eavesdroppers and attackers alike. Two small chairs and a small wooden table is its only furniture.
Rapunzel settles down in her usual chair, and rolls out the map for Varian to see. The door opens before she can speak, Lance sweeping in with their food. Rapunzel gives him a sincere smile. “Thank you, Lance. I’ve missed your cooking.” She glances at the plate and gasps in delight. “Ooh, and pie, too?”
“Of course! Anytime, little lady, if it’s for you,” Lance replies warmly. He sets down the plates and ruffles Varian’s hair with a grin. “Anything for my favorite customers! Lemme know if you two find any more buried treasure like last time, y’hear?”
Varian bats his hand away with a scowl, and Lance laughs deep from his gut, walking away. “I’ll keep the eyes off your back,” he calls after them as he exits. “Go save the kingdom or something for me!” He pokes his head through the doorway to point a finger at Varian. “And you, kiddo, you better let me know if you’re staying for dinner.”
Varian mutters under his breath and brushes his hair back into its usual style, tying the strands behind his head in a loose pony-tail. “Yeah, yeah. I’m staying.”
“Wonderful! I’m making your favorites, then. It’s a special day, after all!”
Rapunzel waves at Lance’s back as he exits and turns to Varian the moment he’s out of sight. “Special day?” she asks with interest.
“Doesn’t matter,” Varian dismisses, waving it off. “Lance is just being—Lance. Mother-henning me.” His hand drops, and Rapunzel suddenly finds herself pinned under a fierce stare. Varian is practically bouncing in his seat, his fingers tapping hard against the table.
“Now can you tell me why you wanted to meet?” he asks, without any more delay. “Usually when its small stuff I meet with Cassie or Eugene, so, it’s something big, right?”
Rapunzel shakes her head, more amused by his impatience than offended. “Here,” she offers, pointing out the mountain hideout. “Have you heard anything about the Separatists lately?”
Varian leans over, eyeing the map. “Yes,” he admits. “I sent Cassie a letter about them this morning, actually. They’ve been… weirdly active. Bolder than usual.” He looks up. “The royal family knows?”
“And the guards.”
He frowns at this. “But then why haven’t they…” Realization flickers across his face. “The Separatists—they have leverage?”
“What they have,” Rapunzel says, “is a deal with a King who is willing to defend their right to be Separatists.”
Varian clicks his tongue, catching the subtext. “You can’t attack without inciting war, can you.”
Rapunzel snaps her fingers at him. “Exactly. Or, arrest them for being Separatists without getting the same result. Basically, we’re checked!”
Varian frowns. “It’s checkmate, actually. Checkmated…?” His face screws up, and he coughs into his hand. “…Anyway, you are acting weirdly peppy for this conversation topic? It’s a little freaky? Not like, bad freaky, but—”
Rapunzel snaps the map closed, cutting off his ramble. “That, my friend,” she says with dramatic grandeur, “is because I have a solution.”
Both eyebrows rise up, and a smile twitches at the corners of his mouth. “Okay…?”
Rapunzel clasps his hands in hers and leans forward over the table so he can’t escape. “Varian,” she says solemnly, “how do you feel about kidnapping a member of the royal family?”
Varian freezes.
Rapunzel grins.
“Oh, no,” Varian says, very quietly, and that is when Rapunzel starts laughing.
-
“I don’t know why I had to be the one to come,” Varian grumbles, hours later.
“Quiet!” Rapunzel hisses back. They are crouched in a bush, ducked underneath the many branches and leaves. She cannot help but be thankful, for once, that her long hair is now cut short; even unbreakable, it would have been a pain to lug around and hide. “Do you want them to find us?”
“I dunno, do I?”
Rapunzel frowns at him, disapproving, and Varian subsides with a sigh. His shoulders droop, his attitude falling to uncertainty. “I just don’t know if it’s a good idea, okay? What if we get caught?”
“Easy,” Rapunzel says, and hefts up her frying pan. “We get to practice! It’s been a while since I went all out, y’know?”
“Well…”
“You have your staff, don’t you?”
“…I do…”
“And all your alchemy concoctions?”
“Well, not all, but…”
Rapunzel studies his face and gentles, smiling sympathetically and nudging at his shoulder. “Remember a few years back?” she asks, soft. “When you and I went into the tunnels, and fought our way through all those boobytraps?”
“Yeah,” Varian says. “And then I stole a useless flower, betrayed you and the kingdom, and started making what turned out to be some of the worst decisions of my life?”
Rapunzel punches his shoulder, a move reminiscent of Cassandra, unamused by this. “Before that. Just— just the tunnels. The moving walls, the traps, the collapsing floors…”
“The automaton,” Varian offers, brightening a little, as Rapunzel knew he would. Science has forever been Varian’s love. Even just the mention of the robot is enough to bring a sliver of joy to Varian’s face.
She beams at him. “Yes, exactly! The automaton. We worked together pretty well then, didn’t we?”
His smile is sudden and startling, small and uncertain but bright. “…Yeah. Yeah, we did!”
She nudges his shoulder again. “That’s the spirit! And I mean, after having faced such a… a marvel of ancient scientific achievement, what are a few goons?”
This time, Varian grins, all teeth. “Easy pickings?”
Rapunzel matches his smile, bolstered by his good mood. “Exactly! So chin up, okay? Don’t worry. I’m here with you— we’ll be fine.”
“Okay,” Varian says, and this time he really sounds like he means it. Rapunzel tugs a twig from his hair and tells him the rest of her plan with a wicked smile.
Varian matches her grin with one of his own, laughter in his eyes. “Aw, you’re right,” he says, warmth in his voice, “we do make a pretty good team, Princess.”
-
“I seek an audience with the to-be King of Saporia,” Varian says coldly, shoving Rapunzel forwards. Rapunzel stumbles in her footing. Her arms are wrenched tight behind her back, tied with rough twine and twisted so she can’t get free. There’s a gag around her mouth and fire in her eyes, the hook of Varian’s staff circling her throat.
At the entrance of the mountain hideout, home of the Separatists, the look-outs hesitate, stepping back, glancing uncertainly between one another. Neither of them speaks.
Varian’s eyes narrow, shoulders drawing back. He grabs Rapunzel’s arms and forces her to her knees so that he can point the staff at them, instead.
“Well?” Varian snaps. He makes a terrifying sight, in this midnight darkness— a tall and snap-thin teen, all angles, with dark circles like bruises beneath his eyes and deep shadows across his cold face, a wicked scar trailing across one cheek. Varian tilts up his chin and jabs the staff in the look-out’s direction, the alchemical concoctions tied to the tip glowing a sickly green-and-yellow. “Get going, before I decide to find him myself.”
One guard steps back, but the other steps forward, sword held out, expression uncertain. “Who—who are you? I don’t—”
“I am someone who wants revenge on Corona, same as you,” Varian says. “What more do you need to know? I have the Crown Princess at my feet and my staff at your throats. I don’t advise you make me wait any longer.”
This, it seems, is enough for the guards— without a second glance, they both flee into the hideout, vanishing into the dark, leaving Varian and his prisoner alone.
The moment they vanish, Varian’s shoulders sag, and the cold expression falls from his face. He looks down at Rapunzel in worry. Rapunzel sits up and winks at him.
“For the record,” Varian whispers down to her, “I've changed my mind. I hate this plan so much. I mean sure, they were dumb enough to both leave and get him—their hideout is completely undefended right now, I’m a bit offended, but—”
Rapunzel rolls her eyes at him, sitting back on the dirt. Pascal crawls out from behind her hair, shaking his head up at Varian from her shoulder.
“I mean, yeah,” Varian admits, squinting at the unprotected hideout entrance, scar scrunching up near his eye, “it’s nice to be respected, but like— wow, this is one of worse ones yet. The plan, I mean. I’ve met worse goons— the plan, this plan though, oh yikes.”
Rapunzel turns to stare at him, deadpan. She cannot believe him. Is he really saying this now? Here? When they are quite literally in the middle of said plan? Ridiculous.
Varian looks back. “Oh, wow. Did you learn that one from Pascal? ‘Cause it kinda feels like you learned that one from Pascal.”
Pascal squints at him. Varian nods knowingly. “Yep,” he says. “That was a Pascal-look for sure.”
Footsteps and voices echo from within the hideout, and all three of them pause, before they snap back into character. Pascal vanishes back behind Rapunzel’s hair, and Rapunzel directs her eyes to the ground, shoulders bowed in pretend defeat. Varian gingerly places the crook of his staff back at her throat.
“Positions, everyone, positions,” Varian mutters, mockery of a stage play director, and giggles nervously under his breath.
Rapunzel bites her lip to keep from laughing and shakes her head. Angry thoughts, she reminds herself. Must think angry thoughts!
By the time the Separatist self-proclaimed King and entourage turns into the light, Rapunzel is ready, eyes lowered but burning with fury. It is not hard. All she has to do is remember the threat this man poses to her people, and the rage comes quickly.
Varian’s face is once more wiped clean of emotion, his cold blue eyes glittering with malice. When he sees the Separatist leader arrive, he smiles a crescent smile, a smile too wide to be sincere, devoid of true joy and warmth.
“King of Saporia,” Varian says, calm. “I’ve come to offer you my services.”
“Have you,” says the man, but he seems non-hostile, mollified by the title Varian has granted him. He glances at Rapunzel and then away again. “A bold statement, my dear boy. Why, pray tell, should I believe you? Or even have need of such services?”
“Because I have the Crown Princess of Corona at your feet and skills you could only dream of,” Varian says, smile dropping. Silly questions always have made him impatient. “Do the math, old man.”
“The Crown Princess—?” the man starts, looking to Rapunzel for a long moment. After a second his eyes go wide with recognition. “That is—… by the Moon, it is her.”
This time when he turns to Varian, he doesn’t seem nearly as confident. “Who… just who are you?”
“One who hates Corona as much as you do,” Varian says simply. He smiles again, hard and cold as stone. “Tell me, would-be King of Saporia. Have you heard of the Alchemist?”
“The Alchemist? You?” The false king steps back. “But I heard… I heard he was much older. And you don’t look at thing like the wanted poster…”
“Is it my fault if the kingdom is full of fools?” Varian asks simply. “They didn’t want the stigma of being beaten by a fourteen-year-old; worked out well for me all these years. I am tired of this. Do you agree, King? Or should I go,” he pulls back the staff, near choking Rapunzel, and she holds her breath to keep from coughing, “—and give my gift to someone else more… appreciative?”
“No!” The Separatist leader says, panic and greed clear as day in his eyes. “No, no, my dear boy… You, you are welcome! Your company, your abilities…” His eyes stray to Rapunzel. “And your gift.”
“Wonderful,” Varian says. He smiles, much more genuinely this time, and squeezes Rapunzel’s shoulder in a silent cue. “We have a deal then. Now—”
All at once, Rapunzel breaks into motion. She twists and turns and fights with all her might, and Varian lunges at her bound wrists, pretending to struggle to keep a hold on her.
“Damn you, help me!” he shouts at the Separatists. “Bring your men out here, hurry!”
“Can’t you do something?” the leader cries out, stepping closer, nervous at the idea of his prize escaping.
“Do as I say,” Varian snarls back, acting out his part perfectly even as he dabs chemicals on Rapunzel’s bound wrists, “or Moon help me, I’ll—”
Rapunzel ‘rips’ free of the rope bindings while all are distracted and lunges for the Separatist leader. Her rope bonds fall away like water, the cords already eaten away by one of Varian’s concoctions, just as they planned. She grabs the startled leader, twisting his arm behind his back the way Cassandra taught her, and holding the rim of her frying pan under his throat, cold metal against his windpipe. “Drop your weapons!” she shouts, when all the Separatists go for their swords. “Stop moving now, or—or, the old man gets it!”
The old man gets it? Varian mouths at her, looking incredulous, and Rapunzel flushes, shaking her head at him.
The men mumble, shuffling uncertainly on their feet. Rapunzel glares her fiercest glare at them. “Well?” she demands.
They glance between each other. “…We could always get a new king,” one guard mumbles, and as one, every Separatist sword rises.
In her grip, the former Separatist leader sobs pathetically.
Rapunzel nearly drops her pan. “Really?” she says, disgusted and annoyed. “Really?”
“I told you so,” Varian mumbles, and that is when the men attack.
-
“Stop pouting,” says Rapunzel, an hour later, trudging through the woods. Varian follows at her heels, grumbling quietly. “We were fine!”
“You hit me in the eye,” Varian says back. “With a frying pan.”
“That was an accident!”
“You threw it straight at me!”
“I thought you were going to catch it! Everyone else always catches it!”
“Threw it at me,” Varian repeats stubbornly, rubbing forlornly at his face. “Giving me black eyes, making annoying plans, setting off flares…”
“It all worked out!” Rapunzel insists, offended by his complaints. She brushes a stray branch away from her face, ducking underneath another one, heading up the hill with a huff. “We were amazing! You didn’t accidentally say anything cheesy in a panic, I got to dramatically escape and hold a man hostage, we had a wonderful time subduing a threat to the kingdom, and we won! It was perfect!”
“Sure, they all got arrested,” Varian says. “But we had to run away from guards, and my eye hurts, and I told you so.”
Rapunzel grins at him. “And we won!” she repeats stubbornly, nudging him with her elbow.
Varian waves a hand. “Ehhh.”
“Ehhh?!”
“Yeah, that’s right. Ehhh. I think we should’ve done my plan.”
“Your plan!” Rapunzel says, crossing her arms. “What was your plan!”
Varian huffs. “Well, I may have forgotten to mention it, but—”
“Ohoho, did you?”
“—BUT,” Varian repeats loudly, “I’ll have you know it was a vastly superior plan—”
“Oh!”
“—Very well thought out—”
“I see!”
“—And it would have absolutely worked, no ifs, ands, or buts about it. So there.”
“W-ell,” says Rapunzel, trying not to laugh, adopting a lofty tone, “I’m very sorry for not following your wonderful and yet unspoken plan, Varian.”
Varian nods firmly, crossing his arms with a satisfied smile. “Thank you,” he says primly, and promptly trips over a branch.
Rapunzel catches him before he can face-plant the ground, laughing softly as she sets him upright. “You okay there?”
“Branches, too many branches. Where are we even going? This isn’t the way back to the castle!”
“That way is going to be crawling with guards for a while, so I figured we should avoid it for a bit.” Rapunzel tugs him forward, looping their arms together playfully. “I know a good place to rest, yeah? We’re almost there! Just, trust me?”
Varian goes quiet at this. When he finally responds, his voice is much softer. “Okay,” he says. His eyes are on the ground. “I trust you.”
Rapunzel faces forward, and doesn’t look back at him, doesn’t dare to. But she smiles into the shadowed brush, so wide and bright that the force of it nearly brings tears to her eyes.
She never really thought they could have this, is the thing, never believed she and Varian could ever be friends again. Those years ago, after that battle in Old Corona, she had thought that would be the end of it. She could apologize, she could give him a second chance, she could try— and maybe, things could be all right. But even then, she’d never dared to dream that this would happen. That he could forgive her, and that she could forgive him. That they could start over.
The events that brought them to this point—none of them were nice, none of them were pretty. Some still give Rapunzel nightmares, memories of a dark place, of a desperate chase, of a bloody arrow or a kingdom in ruin. She still has scars, pale and light, remnants of wounds even Rapunzel’s quick healing can’t erase entirely. Varian is missing half his ear, has a scar slashing across half his face. Eugene’s leg will never be the same; Cassandra’s back is a mass of scars.
Yet, for all the ugliness in their past, their future is bright. It is full of laughter and fun and fights that are more brawl than true danger. Rapunzel… she can never regret these past few years, not really. Not when it has brought her this future, not when it has brought her here, to a world where Varian says “I trust you,” and means it, a world where they are not enemies. A world with Eugene at her side and Cassandra set to be Captain of the Guard. A world where they are victorious.
These thoughts comfort her as they walk, set her heart at ease and keep her walk steady. When they reach her destination, she has enough good cheer remaining to make of a show of it, a low sweep of her hand and a silly smile.
“May I present to you—a wall!”
“Ah, yes, the kingdom border,” Varian says dryly. “A riveting sight. Truly amazing. It’s almost like I didn’t grow up in a border town and see it every day of my life—”
Rapunzel has already climbed to the top. “Quit sassing me and come up!”
“Princess, seriously, I already know—”
“Up!”
He sighs loudly, but starts climbing, only complaining a little bit. Halfway up, his gloves slip, and Rapunzel leans over the edge, catching him just in time. She yanks him up the rest of the way with one sharp tug. He’s lighter than she expects, though, and she pulls too hard—they go tumbling back against the stone, Varian yelping and Rapunzel wheezing when Varian’s elbow digs into her stomach.
“Ouch!”
“Ohhh, thanks for that, just what I needed, to be sent flying into space—”
“I keep forgetting how light you are,” Rapunzel says, laughing weakly, trying to catch her breath. “Eugene is right! Have you been eating regular meals?”
“I forgot how strong and how nosy you are,” Varian says in return, pushing himself up. He pats the dust from his hair. “I’m fine, Mom. I eat veggies and everything, lay off.”
“I just worry.”
He sighs at this, rolling over onto his back, arms out-splayed. “I know,” he says sadly. “You always worry. I wish you wouldn’t.”
Rapunzel has nothing to say to this, so she lays down next to him instead, arms folded on her chest, looking up to the stars. She’s quiet for a long moment, playing with her nails, before she dares to speak.
“I’m told that what older sisters do,” she says finally, hesitant. “Worry, I mean.”
Varian sucks in a tiny breath. “An… older sister,” he repeats, but his voice breaks on the words, makes it a question.
“Yes,” Rapunzel says. She tangles her fingers, untangles them, tangles them again. She has called Varian her brother before—just once, a year ago, and it had seemed right to do it—but she has never laid claim to the title in this way, mentioned herself as a part of his family, rather than just him as a part of hers. “If… if that’s okay?”
Varian is quiet, quiet for a long time, his breathing rasping faintly in the air. When he finally speaks, his voice is rough, wet with unshed tears. “…Yeah,” he says. “Yeah. I’ve… I’ve never had a sibling before. Its— I don’t… I don’t mind if— if you are.”
Rapunzel lets out a relieved breath, grinning up at the sky. “Okay,” she says, beaming at the stars. “Okay.”
“Do—do you?”
“Do I what?”
“Do you mind? Calling me— your brother. After everything.”
She rolls onto her stomach, pushing up on her elbows so she can reach out and tweak his nose. He yelps, hands flying to his face, and she laughs at his expression, confusion and childish annoyance clear as day in his eyes.
“I wouldn’t say it if I didn’t mean it,” she tells him, warmth curling in her heart. She twists to sit up fully, legs dangling over the edge of the wall, the wind blowing through her hair. “How many times are you going to ask me that? You’re my brother. I told you that ages ago. Ah, you’re so silly sometimes.”
He laughs, or maybe cries, or maybe it’s something a little of both. He sits up too, next to her, one hand still rubbing at his nose. His eyes are blinking fast and he is hiding a smile behind his hand. “Ugh, where do you get off saying that? Remember the tunnels? Oh, you dastardly fiend—”
“May I remind you,” Rapunzel says with a grin, “of, It is I, Varian! Come to enact—”
“Okay okay! I get it, you win, can you please not remind me of that?”
Rapunzel breaks off into laughter, and after a moment of hesitation, Varian laughs with her, the last of the tension bleeding out from his shoulders. The wind blows cold against their faces, still clinging to the winter chill even in this early spring. In the distance, the capital city and the castle are awash in light, a glowing beacon on the horizon, a radiance gathering at its edges. It turns the far-off hills into black silhouettes, stains the clouds a brilliant gold and pink. Dawn is soon approaching.
Rapunzel smiles out over the kingdom and reaches out with one arm to hug Varian to her side on impulse. “Happy birthday, little brother,” she tells him, and kicks her feet over the edge. “Nineteen’s a big year—I know mine was. I hope you had fun tonight.”
He freezes in her hold, sucking in a sharp breath, stiff in her arms. “I didn’t know you—”
She grins at him. “A little birdie told me.”
“Who?”
“I think you’ll have fun finding out, won’t you?”
He pauses at this, and then sighs. “Lance. Oh, damn. There's gonna be gifts in my main hideout, isn’t there?”
“Better head to the Snuggly Duckling and pick them up before you go!” Rapunzel chirps, refusing to feel ashamed.
“You’re all terrible,” Varian says, but he is smiling, cheeks flushed with pleasure. “What, was this—this whole thing, was it—”
Rapunzel laughs sheepishly, one hand rising to pull at a strand of her hair. “Sort of…? I mean the Separatists, they were a legitimate issue, but… Yes.”
“I still don’t get how what we did solved anything,” Varian admits, picking at a loose thread in his vest. “Won’t King Trevor just declare war now? I mean, being a Separatist is a crime, but he’ll probably defend them against that charge, so…”
“Oh!” Rapunzel says, grinning back at him. “Actually, it’s pretty simple. See, you attacked and kidnapped me, and you made a deal with the Separatists— I can vouch for that. Ergo, because of that, they are guilty of aiding and requesting an attack on a princess, ergo this is a crime King Trevor can’t excuse, and thus— We charge them for the crime of assault, and since we aren’t persecuting them for being Separatists, King Trevor can’t throw a fit over it, and we leave them all to stew in their untimely demise.”
“Nice,” says Varian.
“I know, right? I make good plans.” Rapunzel pokes his side, and he squeaks in surprise, leaning away from her. “Nice subject change, by the way. C’mon, be honest. It was fun, wasn’t it?”
Varian smiles, a bit sheepish, his eyes bright. “Okay, okay. It was.” He takes a deep breath, looking as if he is about to speak, and then shakes his head. Abruptly he leans forward, twisting in her hold to hug her properly, both arms squeezing tight against her back, his hair brushing her cheek.
He has let go and pulled away before Rapunzel can react. “Thanks,” Varian says, very carefully avoiding her gaze. "For— for everything.”
Rapunzel blinks at him, still surprised by the sudden hug, and then smiles, soft and gentle. She feels like she's on cloud nine, so happy she could sing. “Of course.”
Varian shakes his head again, and stands suddenly, turning away. It cannot hide the tremble in his hands, the tears in his eyes, or the smile on his face. “I should go now,” he says awkwardly, fiddling with his clothes. “I still have…”
He waves his hand, looking frustrated, and Rapunzel nods knowingly, taking pity on him.
“I get it,” she says kindly. “Take care, Varian.”
He looks back at her. “You too, Princ…” He stops then, and smiles. “Rapunzel,” he corrects, and Rapunzel beams back at him, delighted.
They help each other down from the wall and Rapunzel wraps Varian in one last bruising hug before he can scamper off. For a moment he hesitates, and then his arms come around and hug her back, just as tightly.
“Goodbye, Varian,” Rapunzel says, squeezing him hard before she pulls away, hands resting on his shoulders. “I’ll see you soon.”
He grins up at her, for a moment looking every inch the boy he once was, the boy he still is, the boy she met years and years ago. “Bye, Raps.”
She waves him off and tries not to laugh when he leaves, because he is walking in the direction of the Snuggly Duckling. She hopes Lance doesn’t tease him too much, or throw too big of a celebration; she hopes he likes the gifts they all have left for him. She hopes tonight was as fun for him as it was for her.
She turns her face towards the sunrise and starts the long walk home, discussing with Pascal her story for how she ‘escaped’ her kidnapping. There is happiness in her heart and warmth brimming from the top of her head to the tips of her toes. She feels happy. She feels victorious.
All in all, she thinks, watching as the sun crests over her kingdom, it has been a good day. A good day, a good year, a good life. It is the happily ever after the tragedy, the sunrise at the end of the long night. They may have struggled to get here—but in the end that sun shines all the brighter to their eyes because of it.
Her story has ended at last, and this ending—this happily ever after they have all been left with—it is one she has come to love, with every fiber of her being.
She walks home to her family without fear, led on by the rising sun, and not once does she think to look back.
