Italy Superior and Ancient Rome
Italy Superior and Ancient Rome
Italy Superior and ancient Rome is a necessary post to explain the Venetian (Italian) influence of Florida, formally, called La floridas, which means the land of the flowers.
The Venetians are named after their city Venice, Italy, which is a city built around water with a serious of water canals. Likewise, Florida is a state with thousands of water canals similar to the ones in Venice, Italy.…

Captain Martini in the Adriatic
Wednesday 23rd August 2023 – Split, Croatia
Departing Venice yesterday evening, Silver Nova was making a steady (and I must say totally imperceptible) 15-16 knots all the way to Split on the Dalmatian Coast of Croatia this morning and we were joined in port today by the beautiful ‘Sea Cloud’.
Built in 1931 as a private yacht for the Marjorie Merriweather Post, she’s had many owners and many careers but since 1979 has been cruising. Indeed, I travelled on her newest (rather larger) sister ‘Sea Cloud Spirit’ last year.
Today though, while Andrew & Angie went on an excursion to the Krka National Park, I took the trip to the UNESCO Heritage sites of nearby Trogir and Split.
This section of the Dalmation Coast of Croatia has a long history of being settled and developed by Greeks, Romans, Venetians, even Ottomans. The medieval walled town of Trogir sits on an island and still has its quaint little alleys and tiny houses are far too small (and expensive) to live in these days, so many of them are now holiday apartments!
One of the other main features of Trogir is the Cathedral of St Lawrence and its Bell Tower, which took 300 years to build – in a succession of styles.
The South Gate of the walled town opens onto a promenade, at the end of which is the enormous Kamarlengo Castle, built in the 15th century by the Venetians.
Returning to the port of Split, the modern city developed from the remains of Emperor Diocletian’s Palace, completed around 305 AD.
Today, what remains of the royal apartments opens onto a courtyard and peristyle….
Diocletian was one of the few who lived long enough to be able to retire! Sadly, he died in 312 AD and his octagonal Mausoleum at the heart of the palace today serves as the Cathedral of St Domnius. Although it’s been extended (the Bell Tower was added in the 7th century), it is the oldest catholic church in the world still in use that is predominantly within its original walls.
After the death of Diocletian, the palace was eventually plundered by the locals for its stone and the development of the town that grew out of it but the main entrance to the surviving heart of the palace is today through the catacombs which had to be cleared of 100s of years’ worth of rubbish!
Perhaps I’m doing a disservice to any local artisans but it seems to me that the catacombs today are full of rubbish again, only this time the traders are selling it to the tourists!
