Cyno’s not a fool. He’s the General Mahamatra, and he knows the General Mahamatra is cunning, efficient, ruthless and steadfast. Cyno doesn’t make mistakes; he makes enemies. With a flick of his polearm, and the clench of his fist, scared scholars submit themselves to him for their judgement. Domineering, intimidating, a leader feared by all.

However, underneath this hardened armour, lies a beating heart. A heart that beats with the ferocity of his glares, and the calmness of his mind. Cyno may be a judge, but each judge will decide on things a little differently than others.

Justice. This is what Cyno believes in. Justice, above all, must be revered and feared. Anyone foolish enough to toe the line into unfairness and exploitation must be punished. This is what he believes in now, and will believe in until he lies still- soul having left- in search of a better place. However, his beating heart does not allow him to judge the one person most important to him. You.

When Cyno watches the way you gently smile, when you stroke his hair in a way he would never let others see, his beating heart never stops racing. He’s filled with an indescribable urge to shield you from the harsh winds and sandstorms of the desert, to the downpours and thunder from the forests. He finds it unfair how, when you look at him, his eyes soften and armour melts, turning to embrace you. His eyebrows furrow, frustrated at his own feelings. How tightly you’re clasping him, how tightly he’s clasping back, it’s an unspoken conversation of I love you’s and I’ll stay with you until the end.

There is no escape for the guilty, but what if the predator becomes its very own prey? There is no running away from the self; there is only facing it head on. Cyno cannot believe his own hypocrisy, kissing your forehead, while recounting his unbothered nature towards other people. If he’s so unbothered, why does he care about every little thing you express? Showing him a pretty flower, he’d say that you’re prettier, if you were laughing about his new escapades that he hadn’t realised were funny, the curves of his mouth would slowly start to turn up too. When you come into his arms crying, he cares about your vulnerability, unlike any other. Whispering sweet nothings into your ear; Cyno’s usual demeanour completely changes.

But Cyno is still Cyno, even with the added trimmings of laced hands and pinkie promises made under moonlight. He may be the General Mahamatra, judge of fates, and twilight arbiter, but he’s also a soldier in love. Even if he is a hypocrite, even if it goes against his usual conduct, Cyno cannot help but reach that little bit farther for you. Threats of punishment and intimidation would never work on you, because he’s not a one-dimensional being. You’ve seen him in a softer light, harsh edges to most people, curved to you. The glint in his eye when he’s caught his prey is portrayed a little differently when you’re embracing in bed, all hushed words, and warmth.

If the need should arrive, Cyno would be there for you. He would be there to wipe your tears with a gentle hand, with a soft remark, with the comfort of a thousand stars. Hands that have conquered many, come to surrender themselves into your tender touch. Maybe this weakness goes against his beliefs; maybe he should have his guard up; maybe he shouldn’t have let himself fall this far. But, maybe, Cyno doesn’t mind. He’s not one dimensional, after all.
