Erik packed up his things from work. His tools, and the remnants of the lunch that Magda had packed for him. Erik had met Magda while hiding out in Pruszków, Poland three or four years ago, taking on the name Henryk Gurszky. They fell in love and got married and a not long later they had a little girl, who was now two years old, Nina. Erik, in his flannel shirt with the sleeves rolled up, his serial number tattoo from his time in Auschwitz, 24005, visible, and his work pants and boots, took his bag and walked out of the factory, turning left and heading down the road that headed to the northern edge of town. Erik and the girls lived in a cottage right outside town.
Everyone in Pruszków knew "Henryk", and care about him and his girls. As he walked down the road he waved at each person that he saw. They all waved at him, but not back at him, more of the exact same time. Erik smiled at them as he walked by. Erik consistently has to push back the thoughts, anxieties and fears that these people would turn him over in a heart beat. Or that they would fear and hate him and his family for Erik being a mutant. Erik had experienced so much trauma in his life. Starting with his time at Auschwitz during the second World War. The Nazi's experimentation on the Jewish people, his people, on him. Being forcibly taken from his family in 1944, never to see them again. Then Nazi's experimentation on the people with the gene, that at that time was unknown, but would later become known as the X-gene. The Nazi scientist, known at that time as, Dr. Klaus Schmidt and later Sebastian Shaw, took a particular liking to Erik's mutation. He had found a new family in his rage fueled pursuit of vengeance toward Sebastian Shaw. Charles Xavier and Division X. Erik then looses that family, once again because of Shaw, even if he did get his revenge in the end. At what cost, though? Keeps losing those he loves the most in his life. Wait. A familiar face, not someone from Pruszków. Someone Erik had not seen since he was a child. A ghost of Erik’s past. The ghost had a little child with him? Erik follows the ghost and the child. He followed them for a few blocks and around a corner. Erik never seemed to get any closer to them. It was like a nightmare. Was he dreaming? No he was definitely awake. The ghost and the child turned another corner. Erik was losing them and rushed forward and rounded the corner....

State Rep. Sarah Fowler Arthur is sponsoring House Bill 327.
For those who don't know what that means, this bill would allow the Holocaust to be taught in schools as a historical event to be viewed 'from both sides'.
Speaking with all the energy she could muster from her single brain cell:
“Maybe you’re going to listen to the perspective of someone from Poland when they were undergoing similar displacement, or when they were being incorporated into the war and to some of these camps."
"Or maybe you’re listening to it from the perspective of a Jewish person that has gone through the tragedies that took place,” she said, describing how a hypothetical lesson that complies with the law could unfold. “And maybe you’ll listen to it from the perspective of a German soldier.”
This, from a woman who admits everything she knows about the Holocaust, she learned from 'listening to a few audiobooks'.
We cannot have an 'impartial' view of the Holocaust. There is no such thing. We cannot 'see both sides'. There is no such thing.
This bill does not widen the conversation. It enables the creation of a new generation of white supremacists. It normalizes antisemitism. There's already a major upswing in antisemitism across the US.
We cannot, we must not allow it to be ingrained in law.

CW: I will be discussing a very ugly side of history in this post, so if you would rather not go into comparisons between Hemlock and another known "doctor" that was pure evil, please avoid this topic entirely. You were warned.
...now, for the adults that can discuss this without devolving into heated arguments about "graphic content"... let me first say this.
I came into this world on February 7, 1983.
Mengele left it on this same day 4 years earlier, meaning that I, a woman with autism and therefore a disability, got to enter a world where he no longer existed. Even as I'm typing this, the thought gives me chills several months after I learned of this fact.
That being said...I won't make a single comparison between this very real threat that could now re-emerge at any time, in any country, and the character Royce Hemlock, without giving it a great deal of thought as to whether or not such a discussion could, or would, downplay the horrors of the Holocaust.

This is very late but I really want to thank you for making such a great video on the harmful messages of Wof and analyzing how it perpetuates a lot of harmful tropes in fantasy novels. While not surprising in fantasy, it's relieving that the fandom is also more welcome to see Wings of fire specifically a more critical light these days on here too.
I had actually grown up with the novels, and while I used to love them and enjoyed them since the first book, I always have felt uncomfortable with the Tui's shortcomings as a writer clearly leaking through. As a mixed kid reading about Sunny, sometimes it felt hurtful and mean how she was spoken of as a complete abomination and a stunted prototype of the dragonet they were supposed to have. While dragons that talked about her like that were viewed negatively, it felt strange to me how her being a hybrid is treated as this big surprise in the Brightest night and no dragon even thought "hey maybe she just has some mixed heritage"
When reading about glory as well, I felt disappointed and hurt that the rain wing racism all along was somewhat justified and w the night wings were planning and they're suddenly moving in with them with no soldiers or other damn scientists than Dr m*n*gele- I mean Mastermind having any visible punishment. In book 14, Rainwings are STILL described as lazy by Snowfall. And clearly aren't taken seriously unless you're Glory, Mangrove, Grandeur, or Kinkajou. I was infuriated at the clear holocaust imagery and colonliast plotline being used to make the Nightwings "cool and dark"
Arc 3 for me was the last straw. Pantala was/is literally based on AFRICA too, like..ugh. As a black person who grew up on this series, It's when I no longer enjoyed reading and lost a lot of my love for it. Tui's escapist fantasy no longer felt like a safe space- it felt very harmful to me. And I felt alone in experiencing this, as other fans I interacted with online were usually white. When you described your experience as a Jewish kid with fantasy, I realized I felt a similar way towards a lot of fantasy novels I have read. But I feel like wings of fire stands out. Something I grew up with and loved that I know was never meant, and never will be for people like me. Again, thank you for that video. Sorry if this is a bit long!!
No need to apologize at all for the long message! I'm really happy to hear that my video was cathartic for you! I always appreciate hearing feedback on my stuff.
I'm really happy my video could speak to others who can relate to how potentially alienating a lot of escapist fantasy can be. I'm also glad to hear my video could resonate with people who grew up with the series. To be honest, part of me was a little worried that my perspective as an adult going into the series with "sympathy nostalgia" was a little esoteric x3
I'm sorry if my response is a little short here, but I don't have much to add, you put everything so well! And I'm super grateful for this kind message, thank you! :3

80th Anniversary of the Warsaw Ghetto Uprising: "The World Has to Know That We Did Not Go Like Lambs to the Slaughter."
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
April 19th, 1943 - May 16th, 1943 Warsaw, Poland
“The question is not why all the Jews did not fight, but how so many of them did. Tormented, beaten, starved, where did they find the strength, spiritual and physical, to resist?” – Elie Wiesel
In the morning of April 19th, 1943, on what would be the first night of Passover, the Warsaw Ghetto Uprising began. German troops and SS entered the ghetto to deport its surviving inhabitants to the death camps.
In the summer of 1942, as Jews living in the Warsaw ghetto were deported to Treblinka, reports that made their way back quickly made it clear that "resettlement" meant mass-murder. In response to this, Jews citizens in the ghetto began forming organized resistance forces; the Jewish Combat Organization (ŻOB) and the Jewish Military Union (ŻZW).
Following the January 1943 success of a smaller-scale resistance preventing a deportation attempt, an act that led to the suspension of such deportation efforts by the Nazis, the residents began to secretly build subterranean tunnels and shelters in preparation for a full-scale uprising.
Throughout April rumours swirled of a final deportation of the ghetto's remaining Jews. On the 18th it became clear that German forces, reinforced with artillery and tanks, were moving in to carry out their final action. The alarm was raised, and residents retreated to their underground shelters. They would remain here for the duration of the uprising, refusing to surrender themselves to deportation.
A group of around 700 Jewish resistance fighters, made up of the ŻOB and ŻZW and led by 24-year-old Mordechai Anilevitch, joined together to stage what would be their final stand against the Nazis. These brave young people were malnourished and lacked proper military training, they were equipped with nothing but poor-quality or even homemade weapons and their bare hands.
By contrast German forces numbered 2000, they were well-equipped and well-trained and had advanced knowledge of the existence of these resistance groups.
Despite this stark imbalance, on the first day of the uprising the ragtag Jewish fighters met the invaders head on and successfully forced the Nazis to retreat outside the city walls.
Amongst all of the chaos and destruction all around them, the Jews hiding in the tunnels and bunkers gathered together to celebrate Passover with what little they had, breaking homecooked matzah and drinking illicitly obtained wine.
The Warsaw Ghetto Uprising held strong for a full 27 days, coming to an end on May 16th, 1943. Unable to gain a full advantage, the Germans had resorted to burning the Warsaw Ghetto to the ground in an attempt flush out those in hiding so they could be rounded up.
In the months following the official end of the uprising some Jews remained hiding out in the rubble, periodically attacking German police on patrol.
This was the largest uprising by Jews during World War II and the first significant urban revolt against German occupation in Europe. It inspired many more uprisings, especially amongst Jews in camps and Ghettos.

i watched the “is the time coming to lay the Holocaust to rest?” episode of big questions and i am appalled.
i couldn’t even believe that this would even be a question?
first of all, jewish voices need to be centered within these conversations. i don’t care what some random guy who claims to be a human rights expert has to say. not when there are jewish people (SOME OF WHICH WHO ARE LITERAL VICTIMS OF THE NAZIS) who are being talked over and disregarded.
second, talking about the holocaust, how it was even possible, and the extent of the violence, DOES NOT somehow put it above other genocides. believe it or not, but jewish people are not always vindictive and greedy for attention.
lastly, there genuinely is no point to this question. the jewish community will not stop talking about this, not any time soon. we can never forget what happened and all of the lives lost, families shattered, and people traumatized during the shoah.

Me, naively at 10: oh hey I just read a bunch of books about people surviving the holocaust. This antisemitism thing is pretty bad. But where could it be coming from? All the Nazis are gone and we hate them. Everything is fine now right?
Me, at 19: oh fuck- it is everywhere. It has weaseled its way into the core of every social movement, if it didn’t start out like that in the first place. It is in every political talking point about how there’s a “secret entity” ruling America. It’s in calls for death or violence against “Zionists” and their “organizations” without the definition of what that means. It’s in the acceptance of antisemitic people and movements as long as they have other desired components. It is everywhere and there is no inclination to stop it.

Today I told my 4-year-old that we're gonna start playing the quiet game every day and try to go longer and longer without making any noise. She think it's just a game. Really, it's practice. Because I see the pre-Holocaust shit that's happening everywhere and I'm getting ready for the day we end up having to go completely into hiding in someone's basement or attic or something.
Then again, I've never met a single goy who'd actually hide Jews, so part of me wonders what the point even is.
This is heartbreaking. I have nothing to add, this vent speaks for itself.

Today is Holocaust Remembrance Day. This whole week l have been thinking alot about the Holocaust. So last night I re-read maus. One panel really stuck out to me during this reading. For context this is in Maus 2 when Art is talking to his therapist, a Holocaust survivor, about how he feels he could never measure up to his father who survived Auschwitz. At this point in the story his father had already past. May his memory be a blessing.
Tumblr media
The dialogue, “but you weren’t in Auschwitz. You were in Rego Park,” hit me like a punch to the chest. I have no better way to explain the paradoxical guilt I felt and continue to feel as the granddaughter of a Holocaust survivor. I did not live during the Holocaust. It had ended before my grandmother reached eighteen years old. And yet, the Shoah seems to loom over me. Forever a reminder, that I am alive by sheer luck. My great grandfather’s parents as well as two of his brothers were murdered in Auschwitz. My great grandmother’s twin sister was also murdered in the Holocaust. Despite hours of research, I still have no idea where exactly she died.
Using the term guilty for what I feel doesn’t seem exactly right but there is no better word in the English language. Maybe if I was smarter or more articulate I could find better words.
A key theme of this chapter is intergenerational trauma. This is the same chapter that has this iconic image.
Tumblr media
On this Holocaust Remembrance Day, I simply want to acknowledge the real and extremely painful intergenerational trauma and inherited survivors guilt felt by descendants of Jewish survivors. I know I struggled in the past with feeling like I even have any right to feel this way considering I am three generations removed from any of my family that were murdered in the Holocaust. If any other Jews struggle with thoughts like this, I want to assure you that your feelings are valid and real. Intergenerational trauma is complicated and the feelings that come with it don’t simply disappear once a certain number of generations from the event pass.
This post is specifically about the Holocaust and jewish intergenerational trauma stemming from our persecution and genocide. If this post resonates with you as a non-Jew who has intergenerational trauma I am glad, but please do not derail this post.

I’m taking a Holocaust and Modern Genocides class and before we get into the the actual genocide my professor has been going into the history of Pre-Holocaust European antisemitism and Jewish life. This is because she said that she wants us to A)Understand the attitudes that built it up and B) So that the class would understand the casualties as real lives lost and not just numbers in a book.
It’s so strange hearing my goyishe classmates like actually audibly have break throughs about the diversity and actual life that existed within the European Jewry. Like it is so clear that none of them have ever thought of us AS anything more than numbers and sad faces to exist in movies. Like some people were legitimately shocked to find out that there are different branches of Judaism or that Ashkenazim and Sephardim have different cultures and traditions.
To make a long story short the guy who sits close me in that class said he didn’t know Jewish people had different political opinions or what Yiddish was but that’s a different story and I feel entitled to compensation because of it

idk how the fuck people are surprised abt JK Rowling's latest anti-trans bullshit when we've known for YEARS that she happily sides w Nazis; all her public bullshit aside, did you lot suddenly forget the fact that she used antisemitic portrayals of Jews as part of her "fantasy" world where they were all working in banks w long hooked noses and long fingers and beady eyes and pointed ears? her being a Holocaust denier is NOT surprising, and nor is it anything NEW, either.
at this point, yall just need to stfu and listen to the people who are SAYING and have been saying for YEARS that any public and private support of Harry Potter IS allowing her to have this platform; she AND her terrible writing need to fate into the obsolete and have been needing to for YEARS.

USAmericans are aggressively committed to taking all of the worst lessons from WW2 and misremembering it in all of the most destructive ways, including but not limited to:
-that there's such a thing as a "good war" for the US fight in, which is why every act of post-war conflict and empire-building by the United States is relentlessly compared to WW2 (i.e. "Hussein/Gaddafi/Assad/Putin/Xi is the new Hitler!!
-that the United States has a strong ideological commitment to antifascism (lol) as if Nazi racial theories and strategies of conquest weren't copped straight from the United States' regime of racial apartheid and settler-colonialism, and also that the entire Nazi military and scientific apparatus wasn't immediately folded into the US empire at the end of the war
-related to the above, that Argentina/LatAm became the no. 1 haven for Nazi war criminals to get away scot-free post-war and not NASA and NATO
-that WW2 was a war between "liberal democracy" and "authoritarianism/totalitarianism" and that the Nazis and the Soviet Union were the same thing (e.g. the "double genocide" myth) creating the basis of anticommunist mythology ever since
-that Israel as an apartheid ethnostate needs to be aggressively defended as penance for the Holocaust
-that nuclear bombs save people and it was morally excusable to liquefy a quarter of a million people because Japan was too crazy to surrender or negotiate

For Jewish American heritage month I want to post two of the most important comic moments in history:
Tumblr media
First in Uncanny X-Men 150. Magneto almost kills Kitty in the what appears to be just the latest of the many generic villain plans that readers had grown used to. However, this was the moment that his characterization changed forever. He is immediately regretful over striking a young child and starts to remember his own time as a child during the Holocaust. It's notable that while Magneto doesn't know this, Kitty is Jewish. She is a young mutant child who is the first textually Jewish character in Marvel comics (introduced a year before this issue came out in Uncanny 129). It’s so important to know that Kitty Pryde is the catalyst for the reveal that Magneto is a Holocaust survivor. A young girl who is both Jewish and a mutant. Who, to Magneto, represents all he ever wanted to protect. He’s trying to shape the world for kids like her, and this is where he realizes he needs to rethink how he does that. This retcon was established by Jewish author Chris Claremont and is the very foundation of the Magneto X-Men fans today know and love.
Tumblr media
Later in Uncanny 199, Kitty and Magneto attend a reception at the National Holocaust Memorial together. At this event different survivors introduce themselves and speak of family members who fates they don't know about. Kitty speaks on behalf of her grandfather to inquire about her great aunt Chava, who like most victims, has no records of her life or death to be found. Multiple survivors, including Magneto, had met Kitty's great aunt and speak about her with Kitty. Two survivors, Ruth and David, recognize and hail Magneto as a hero to them in Auschwitz. Magneto dismisses the notion he's a hero, but Kitty seems to think otherwise.
This retcon is the most important in all of comics history. Magneto is the Jewish character. He bears so much importance in representing, as the panel above states, the strength and endurance of Jewish people. The wonderful community that is being celebrated this month.
