My personal hc on what everyone in the choir listens to because I have a really versitile music taste:

Ocean:She would like aritists like Marina(she adores elctra heart and the family jewels), Penelope Scott and Taylor Swift. Her favorite songs are Right Where You Left Me and Anti-Hero by Taylor Swift.

Noel:He loves every single song from chicago. He also adores Gaga and Taylor. Would kill to play someone in phantom of the opera. Favorite song is all that jazz.

Mischa: Of course loves mackelmore but also enjoys tyler the creator. Cries to Ukrainian folk music when he reads angst at 3 am. Favorite song is Karma by Taylor swift.

Ricky: he sometimes just straight listens to thoes one hour of silence interupted by vidoes and has multiple of them opened at once. His favorite artists are Lemon Demon(same king), Toby Fox and Will Wood. Also listens to music from The Owl House, Star VS the Force of Evil, and Steven Universe. Favorite song is Touch Tone Telephone by Lemon Demon.

Jane Doe/Penny Lamb: Her top 5 on spotify wrapped were Melanie Martinez, Lana Del Rey, Fleetwood Mac, Lady Gaga and Taylor Swift. Favorite song is Rhiannnon by Fleetwood Mac(my twin @eumeliafeu has a playlist on her spotify for Jane if your interested)

And last but not least, Constance Blackwood: She listens to Kpop(like twice, Red Velvet, IU, ITZY, BTS, Got7, and IKON), ABBA, and her fair share of Melanie and Taylor to. Her favorite songs are Waterloo by ABBA and Midnight Rain by Taylor Swift.

playlist: can i call you tonight? - dayglow

━ 西村力. [ 22:59 ] OKAYAMA, JAPAN. riki would normally have a fan on to drown out the quietness or the loudness but due to the power being out and doesn’t plan to be back on until hours from now. so now all he hears is the people outside being way to loud as they watch fireworks which causes riki not being able to sleep whatsoever.

the only light source is the outside street light in front of his open window making a tint of the color orange reflect on his bedroom walls. riki shuffles around before looking right at the vintage telephone he has sitting on his nightstand.

finally deciding to reach out for the phone and dial your number. getting out of bed and quietly pacing back and forth through his room searching anything to fidget with as his nerves go up afraid that it’s to late for him to be calling. untangling the cord as he finds and picks up a pen laying on the floor of his messy bedroom.

only for the phone to go to voicemail “we’re sorry! you have reached a number that isn’t available at the time. at the tone, please record your message.” he hangs up the phone and sits on the edge of his bed staring at the phone bouncing his leg up and down while fidgeting with the pen he found.

he looks at the clock [ 23:12 ] not even a second later he picks the phone back up and calls you once again in hopes to hear your voice. his heart stops as he hears you pick up. “hello?” you whisper to make sure you don’t wake up any of your family. your voice already calming riki. “hey-” “riki-san what the hell do you want so late?” you ask wanting to hang up and go back to sleep. “I can’t sleep.” he admitted as you sighed feeling pity for the older boy. “i’ll be over there soon.” you said hanging up the phone.

just like always you had to go help the boy. you don’t ever remembering having to sneak out this late and lie so much to your family until riki got older where he always wanted to be by your side as you were his escape well more like each other’s escape. walking in the hot night summer air to hear and see five teenage boys laugh as they play around with flares and fireworks the reason why riki currently couldn’t peacefully sleep.

you climb up the tree next to riki’s window. he practically threw himself at you as he tightly hugged you once you got into his bedroom. “I missed you loser.” he admitted. “dude we just saw each other like 13 hours ago and talked 5 minutes ago.” but you hugged him back hiding your face in his chest.

tightly still hugging you he walked over to his bed until the back of your knees hit his bed and fall onto his comforter. lowly giggling out of happiness. he rolled off top of you as you turned your head to look at him. you heard the train whistle you softly smiled as the sound always somehow gave you comfort.

“c’mon.” you said grabbing his hand pulling him up and stand at his window looking outside. the dark sky decorated with bright stars and bright multi colored fireworks. the five teenagers laughing happily. you laugh with the teenage boys as one of them gets in a shopping cart with a flare and another pushes them around.

turning your head to look at riki who was already staring at you in admiration. you adrimimg how street light lights half of his face. his moles decorates his face with melanin skin tone. you keep looking back and forth between his eyes and lips as your heart starts to race you finally look away as your face turns dark red. both ignoring any feelings you have for each other as you share what star constellations you see.

as time past you both found yourself sleepy as you talk about some comedic stories. as you sit up on his bed his head falls on your shoulder. you set your alarm on your phone to wake up real early in the morning before anyone wakes up and sees your here or your family founds out that you aren’t home.

just like regular mornings riki’s mother found you asleep in riki’s bed but keeps it a secret that only she knows. softly smiling at the two teenagers as she leaves the room. not able to wait until the day riki finally confesses to you.

Last song I listened to: telephone by gaga ft bey. this song is on my gym playlist and I'm in love with it, I listen to it every day, switching between other famous pop songs during my workouts.

Last thing I read:I hope fanfic counts, because I read "winter weddings and blushing brides" by @dontcallmebree, our wonderful author and source of my inspiration for future bindings and it's an amazing fanfic. bucky being the sensible rich guy who's stern with becca but sweet with steve was everything to me. I read it recently and loved it, I needed a light story like that! now a book: was The Midnight Library by Matt Haig and I didn't like it. very predictable and with pointless reflections already made in several other books/films that had the benefit of having a better plot than this book, which was based on a boring character - bordering on unbearable - and without any flavor.

Last movie I watched: it was bacurau. amazing brazilian movie, I watched it again yesterday and it's still very good. I'm looking forward to seeing civil war this week in theaters and I hope it's good, even if it's only because of wagner moura in the production.

Last tv show: the last series I saw is also a brazilian production, and it's "therapy session", based on the israeli version "betipul" and the argentinian "en terapia". I love seeing different cases of people seeking therapy, it's very good, watch it.

Last thing I googled: what ITCMD means, a tax and the acronym it stands for. that's because I have a tax exam tomorrow and I already want to cry. please, some oil heir marry me immediately.

Last thing I ate: hot roll, a Brazilian version of sushi, but fried and with lots of cream cheese on top.

Sweet, salty, or savory: I end up eating more savory foods, I actually prefer them.

Sleep: six hours a night from Monday to Friday and at weekends always about ten hours, because a university student deserves it.

Currently reading: still a fanfic, it's "damage gets done" by bonkybornes @bonky-bornes and man, it's really good as far as it's been updated, chapter 3. taking the opportunity to ask for an update!!!

Money by The Drums - Giyuu would totally want to give back to the world he believes he's stolen from (he's still alive, which is something that he stole from others-) but he has nothing else to give other than hard training and killing demons, saving people when he can

Open Your Eyes by Snow Patrol - this one I can't really explain. the build up and release just kinda speaks for itself. it's cathartic and makes you want to jump up and down and rip an air guitar

music that was heinously missing from my spotify wrapped:

there wasn't even one (1) song from so much for stardust

white flag by dido (did my late night breakdowns to this song mean NOTHING?????)

how did i have only one (1) abba song in my top 100?????? how were they not in my top 5 artists?????

SEVERAL country/adjacent songs from my urban fantasy novel's playlist (mississippi by secret sisters, good intentions by robert ellis, to name a few). i branch out and listen to a genre i generally don't like and this is how i'm rewarded for it

there was also NO classical music??? i had the elgar cello concerto on repeat for at least a month after watching tár but ok i guess!!!

needed more middle school bangers (gives you hell? that's not my name? disturbia? telephone???? where are they spotify????)

i listened to avril lavigne's let go all the way through at least a DOZEN times this year and where was this seen in my spotify wrapped? nowhere!!!

and finally, there were ZERO matchbox twenty songs!!!! how can i call myself the queen of white man music without unwell or push in my top 100

omg hi guys good morning here is my wrapped I know you all want to know :)

the top songs are so funny to me what year do I think it is lol. I really didn’t know what to expect from top artists but listening to nothing but january as a month clearly shined bc that was when I was listening exclusively to hey mickey by baby tate and the new clear days album by the vapors. and february march was big for sparks fly miranda cosgrove album and I was surprised at first but I really don’t listen to enough artists consistently enough for anybody to top that. chappell roan is obvious riverdale cast is obvious fall out boy. I didn’t really expect them to be my Top artist but I did listen to so muck for stardust a lot when it was on my playlist And it’s like half of my playlist that I put on when I have people in the car. so. I really didn’t think I listened to land of confusion or hanging on the telephone that many times but in hindsight I had one day each where I would just listen to Only that song (hanging on the telephone being the day I almost got fenced in at one of the buildings I was exploring lol) and I had them stuck in my head a lot outside of that so I would just throw them on. puppet boy is one of my favorite songs evereverever and sos by abba is a good ass song but I never even had a repeat day for that one but somehow I managed to rack up over 50 listens of it.

other interesting things on my wrapped being I had 152 plays of hey mickey, my top listening day was in january (shocker!) and I listened for over nine hours, and I listened to you’re wrong about for over 3 days which is less than I thought it would be tbh.

Mike’s Playlist Analysis Part 4: Takeaways and Extra Songs

Takeaways

What I noticed about this playlist is that it completely backs a lot of the theories that you guys have (especially the “Telephone Operator” on, that was kind of insane), so you’ve probably already heard my takeaways stated somewhere else. But I’ll just summarize anyway to make it all neat:

1: Mike is getting hella Vecna’d in S5.

2: With all the death references, there is a possibility he might die—although I don’t think it will be permanent.

3: He has an extreme hero complex which correlates with his inferiority complex, and it looks like his mental health really isn’t that great (“Mad World” being on his list deeply concerns me). There’s a lot of repression going on here, a lot of walls he’s put up, most likely because of his family life. My guess (and what the playlist suggests) is that he will have a breakdown in S5.

4: Whatever happens with Byler, Mileven is breaking up. Several songs support this (“Don’t You Want Me” and “When Love Breaks Down”). Also, if you look at El’s playlist even without a deep dive analysis, this is made even more clear (the fact that “Jolene” by Dolly Parton is the last song on her list…other people have mentioned that several times). What I find interesting is that there is nothing very clearly pointing to Byler like there are signs clearly pointing to a Mileven breakup. I think this speaks to Mike’s own confusion about feelings and the Duffers probability didn’t want to spoil too much…but “Smalltown Boy” is still at the top of his playlist. But the song that convinced me the most of Byler endgame for me isn’t actually on Mike’s playlist—it’s on Will’s (“Breakdown” by Tom Petty). Duffers were wild for including that song. Really.

5: Mike is getting the hells outta dodge at the end of Stranger Things. I noticed a “running away” motif in his playlist (the reference comes at least six times, emphasis on at least). This is an especially big theme in “Smalltown Boy…” do with that what you will.

Extra Songs

So, as you might have noticed, I didn’t analyze every single one of the songs. There are a lot (over 30), and some of them stumped me in regards to their potential narrative meaning. Here’s the list of songs I didn’t cover—hopefully someone else can crack them!

Echo Home - from Will's Spotify playlist

Watch me slowly go insane over a song, and make many dubious jumps in logic to connect the lyrics to byler, even though it doesn't really tell us anything new...

A lot of this analysis you could argue is a reach, apart from this:

So, in the album Ash & Ice by The Kills, there's a little symbol associated with each song. The one for Echo Home, in Will's official Spotify playlist, is - oh, look, a telephone.

Specifically a blue telephone, which is double points for supporters of the colour theory. And where are (blue) telephones linked to Will in the show?

That's right, at the end of season 3, and phone calls between Will and Mike are a central point of their s4 Rink-O-Mania argument. There's also the first ep of s1 when Will calls for help, but the lyrics of the song don't really fit. So I think it's safe to say the song is addressed from Will to Mike, and is likely in regards to the distance that grew between them in the year before March 1986. ("This past year [...] I feel like I lost you")

Side note: I love how the phone is a perfect symbol of their miscommunication issues.

Analysing the lyrics though this lens, there's a few interesting things that crop up (though it's entirely possible this song was selected purely due to the phone symbol, angsty vibes, and the fact it fits Will's music tastes):

"I'm flowing with the waters

I'm spinning into orbit

So won't you come on home

And make it alright

I'm drifting in the same old boat

With a different crew"

There's a strong sense the speaker is lost and listless, without a strong purpose/drive, because someone important to them is no longer in their life. They aren't able to move on, and think having that person back would make it all better (sound familiar?). The line "drifting in the same old boat/ With a different crew" is probably referring to the move to Cali - but again that Will doesn't feel like he's changed much internally.

The line "won't you come on home" or "won't you echo home" is repeated several times. I think it's really interesting that Will is asking Mike to come home when it's Will that moved away in the first place - it could suggest that Mike is the one that withdrew emotionally, and it also links to the weirdness around the concept of home with byler, like when Mike took Will 'home' to his basement in s2.

Okay, and this is more of a fun thought than a serious suggestion, but wouldn't it be cool if the lines

"And if I take a turn for the worst

And I call you on the phone

Will you echo home when I call

Won't you echo back and make it alright

Won't you echo home and make me fine"

were referring to Will calling Mike from Cali when he was struggling with the anniversary effect?

Alternative meaning: Mike's mental health issues?

Okay, this interpretation is a massive leap and less coherent (and even more depressing), but a couple lines had me thinking...

References to water, with mention of drifting in boats and the very first line "I'm flowing with the waters". That reminds me of Will's fake body floating in the quarry - which was very traumatic for Mike to see - and maybe something else that happened there....?

"And it's a long long long long drop/ From the rocks to the pearls, we got so lost [...] for so long" Yup. Mike's cliff jump, aka one of the top ten signs someone is Not Okay.

This song could be about the moment Will finds out Mike nearly died when Will was in the Upside Down. Also, this line is about dropping 'from the rocks to the pearls', descension through ascension, (kind of the opposite of the famous Miles Morales falling upwards shot), and if you really wanted to relate it to byler it could suggest that Mike drops from being close with Will, or from homosexuality (seen as 'the rocks', lowest of the low, at the time), to heterosexuality when he dates El - it's seen as an acension or the right thing to do by society, but it only causes Mike conflict and confusion. Following on from that, the line "we got so lost [...] for so long" could show Mike feeling lost due to heteronormativity, or that Mike and Will had started to lose each other from s1 when Mike jumped off the quarry cliff.

"You can keep your own dear life

You can lose it all if you wanna

But I can't keep you out of mine, oh no"

This could be Will acknowledging that he can't stop Mike either from ending things with Will or even from ending his own life, but he also could never bear to let Mike go.

Bonus references:

"We were dancing to a beat of our own/ Flying with our speakers blown". Could link to Mike and Will dancing to a (homosexual) beat of their own in younger years, before societal expectations and comphet drove a wedge between them. Also could relate to Mike/Will 'flying around with all the other fairies' as Troy puts it, just as Mike flew when El saved him from jumping off the cliff.

"Maybe you went out of your mind" Crazy together reference, anyone?
