Robert Johnson

According to legend, as a young man living on a plantation in rural Mississippi, Johnson had a tremendous desire to become a great blues musician. One of the legends often told says that Johnson was instructed to take his guitar to a crossroad near Dockery Plantation at midnight. (There are claims for other sites as the location of the crossroads.) There he was met by a large black man (the Devil) who took the guitar and tuned it. The Devil played a few songs and then returned the guitar to Johnson, giving him mastery of the instrument. This story of a deal with the Devil at the crossroads mirrors the legend of Faust. In exchange for his soul, Johnson was able to create the blues for which he became famous.

This legend was developed over time and has been chronicled by Gayle Dean Wardlow, Edward Komara and Elijah Wald, who sees the legend as largely dating from Johnson's rediscovery by white fans more than two decades after his death. Son House once told the story to Pete Welding as an explanation of Johnson's astonishingly rapid mastery of the guitar. Other interviewers failed to elicit any confirmation from House and there were fully two years between House's observation of Johnson as first a novice and then a master.

Further details were absorbed from the imaginative retellings by Greil Marcus and Robert Palmer. Most significantly, the detail was added that Johnson received his gift from a large black man at a crossroads. There is dispute as to how and when the crossroads detail was attached to the Robert Johnson story. All the published evidence, including a full chapter on the subject in the biography Crossroads, by Tom Graves, suggests an origin in the story of the blues musician Tommy Johnson. This story was collected from his musical associate Ishman Bracey and his elder brother Ledell in the 1960s. One version of Ledell Johnson's account was published in David Evans's 1971 biography of Tommy Johnson, and was repeated in print in 1982 alongside House's story in the widely read Searching for Robert Johnson, by Peter Guralnick.

In another version, Ledell placed the meeting not at a crossroads but in a graveyard. This resembles the story told to Steve LaVere that Ike Zimmerman of Hazlehurst, Mississippi, learned to play the guitar at midnight while sitting on tombstones. Zimmerman is believed to have influenced the playing of the young Johnson.

Recent research by the blues scholar Bruce Conforth, in Living Blues magazine, makes the story clearer. Johnson and Ike Zimmerman did practice in a graveyard at night, because it was quiet and no one would disturb them, but it was not the Hazlehurst cemetery as had been believed: Zimmerman was not from Hazlehurst but nearby Beauregard, and he did not practice in one graveyard, but in several in the area. Johnson spent about a year living with and learning from Zimmerman, who ultimately accompanied Johnson back to the Delta to look after him.

While Dockery, Hazlehurst and Beauregard have each been claimed as the locations of the mythical crossroads, there are also tourist attractions claiming to be "The Crossroads" in both Clarksdale and Memphis. Residents of Rosedale, Mississippi, claim Johnson sold his soul to the devil at the intersection of Highways 1 and 8 in their town, while the 1986 movie Crossroads was filmed in Beulah, Mississippi. The blues historian Steve Cheseborough wrote that it may be impossible to discover the exact location of the mythical crossroads, because "Robert Johnson was a rambling guy".

Some scholars have argued that the devil in these songs may refer not only to the Christian figure of Satan but also to the trickster god of African origin, Legba, himself associated with crossroads. Folklorist Harry M. Hyatt wrote that, during his research in the South from 1935 to 1939, when African-Americans born in the 19th or early 20th century said they or anyone else had "sold their soul to the devil at the crossroads", they had a different meaning in mind. Hyatt claimed there was evidence indicating African religious retentions surrounding Legba and the making of a "deal" (not selling the soul in the same sense as in the Faustian tradition cited by Graves) with the so-called devil at the crossroads.

The Blues and the Blues singer has really special powers over women, especially. It is said that the Blues singer could possess women and have any woman they wanted. And so when Robert Johnson came back, having left his community as an apparently mediocre musician, with a clear genius in his guitar style and lyrics, people said he must have sold his soul to the devil. And that fits in with this old African association with the crossroads where you find wisdom: you go down to the crossroads to learn, and in his case to learn in a Faustian pact, with the devil. You sell your soul to become the greatest musician in history.

This view that the devil in Johnson's songs is derived from an African deity was disputed by the blues scholar David Evans in an essay published in 1999, "Demythologizing the Blues":

There are ... several serious problems with this crossroads myth. The devil imagery found in the blues is thoroughly familiar from western folklore, and nowhere do blues singers ever mention Legba or any other African deity in their songs or other lore. The actual African music connected with cults of Legba and similar trickster deities sounds nothing like the blues, but rather features polyrhythmic percussion and choral call-and-response singing.

The musicologist Alan Lomax dismissed the myth, stating, "In fact, every blues fiddler, banjo picker, harp blower, piano strummer and guitar framer was, in the opinion of both himself and his peers, a child of the Devil, a consequence of the black view of the European dance embrace as sinful in the extreme".

Both Lomax's and Evans's accounts themselves have been disputed and dismissed by Black scholars and authors including Amiri Baraka and Cornel West. West defines Blues as a creation of a people "who are willing to look unflinchingly at catastrophic conditions", as children of God responding to those conditions. Baraka's words are more directly critical of white writers who study African-American Blues artform and culture from a Western viewpoint, stating that they "They have to do that to make themselves superior in some kind of way: that everything has come from Europe, which is not true". Baraka cites that rather than being formed out of any Western context, Blues derives from an African context of its own. The call-and-response singing Lomax argues is different from Blues has been widely cited as being a central aspect of Blues music.

I'm new-ish to writing (i used to write fanfiction when i was like 13. i'm 18 now soo..) but I really wanna do it again.

So this is a list of characters/fandoms I write for as well as some rules for asks. Some things may be missing from this list so if you dont see something on this list, feel free to ask. :))

after the death of your mysterious and secluded great-aunt, you receive a letter from her lawyer saying that she's left you all her earthly belongings: her house, her money, and her secrets.

in order to claim your inheritance, you travel to blackbrook, a small town in the south, to clean out her old and dilapidated house. the town itself is even stranger than the situation you've found yourself in; your house is far on the edge of town, the townsfolk all but avoid you, and you feel like your being watched at all times.

the shadows around your new home seem darker every day. death now permeates everything around you, and the fate of the town is up to you: save those around you or let them burn?

set in a fictional town somewhere between the late 1890s and early 1900s, the devil of blackbrook is a southern gothic 18+ interactive novel with horror elements.

the white eyes. the darkness that creeps into town. the shadow around every corner. makes you feel as if air is being sucked out of your lungs. when will it stop? please god let it stop.

THE SHERIFF: abraham beauregard.

he's been doing this for far too many years. duty. authority. he needs to be in power because without it he is nothing. if the town finds that his station is no longer useful, his life will crumble and fall apart. he knows there's evil. but pretending it's explainable is much easier than accepting he can't do anything to stop it.

THE HOLY MAN: pastor moses kelly.

wake up, preach, bless the folks that are scared (even though he knows it won't do anything), barely eat, barely sleep, wake again. the church is old and it's bones are brittle and he thinks he can't stand the image of the crucifixion any longer. when the devil calls, how can he prove the might of god when the sky seems so empty?

THE CAMBION: samson graves.

he never asked to be here, never asked for this body, for this inherent evil carved into his tendons and bones. his mother was good, but she's long gone now, his home a charred grave behind him. violence and death follows him wherever he walks. maybe killing the devil will bring him peace... even if he doesn't know what that feels like.

THE OUTLAW: stranger wyatt.

stranger... strange man... rider upon a pale horse. he claims the outlaw life brought him freedom but... he longs to settle. plant roots and watch a life grow. but his hands have done so much wrong and he thinks that he doesn't deserve anything good. maybe the only thing that could save his cursed soul is sacrifice. will he give until there is nothing left?

THE REVENANT: francis.

they don't know who they are. what they are. they crawled out of the earth coughing up dirt with nothing but a ring and sheer terror. they remember love, happiness, sadness, and warmth but all that's left is fear and cold and anger and a deep sense that something is very, very wrong. the house is familiar, but will it remember them?

THE BRIDE: mrs. ethel de loughrey.

she misses her home. her mother. her baby brother. her father was loud and terrible but she would trade anything to be out of this loveless marriage and quiet (too quiet) house. she resigns herself to baking and sewing but she longs for so much more. her husband isn't mean or rough but he wishes she was someone else and she wishes she was anywhere but here.

THE PROPHETESS: constance abernathy.

she sees too much. knowledge is a terrible thing when cursed with too much of it. everyone she meets she sees how they end: jealous husband, robbed and killed by outlaws, a mistress who wishes to be more. the worst ones are those filled with darkness and terror and eyes. those fucking eyes. she doesn't know what it is but she knows its not of this world. but no one beliefs the woman with the strange visions.

THE ARTIST: rosalyn goodwin.

the people of the town whisper about her behind her back about her "unwomanly" proclivities, but she couldn't care less. she keeps herself busy in front of a canvas and she wouldn't have it any other way. her hands are stained with paint and she fills canvas after canvas with beautiful pieces. this town does not accept women who live outside of their expectations, but perhaps somewhere in the west will provide a more welcoming place for her art.

From Vanity Fair’s article titled Lucille Beauregard; How Old Money Built a New Empire

‘Lucille Anastasia Beauregard, or simply Lucy as she prefers to be called, is the sole heir to the Beauregard Cosmetics empire. Lucy took over the company at only 21 after the loss of her parents left the company in limbo. The niece of one Donita Donata, the two have been estranged since the fashion mogul’s sister shot her husband and then herself. Scources say that they have not spoken since the night of the incident. Donita allegedly would like to reconnect with Lucy, and reconciliation rumors have swirled. Regarding these rumors, Lucy told Vanity Fair, quote; “I would rather be mailed by bears for all eternity than reconcile with that narcissistic [censored].”’

From the same article: ‘Under Lucy’s guidance, Beauregard cosmetics has turned from an expensive, high end brand in line with Tom Ford and Gucci to an affordable, vegan brand that appeals to everyone, more akin to companies such as Colorpop and Trixie Cosmetics. Beauregard Cosmetics’s top selling product is the Defense Nail Polish, a polish infused with synthetic king cobra venom. The faux venom leaves the scratches of attackers swollen and red, making them easily identifiable. Lucy’s even partnered with the Wild Kratts team to ensure her practices are vegan and have as little impact on the environment as possible. Rumor have surfaced she’s gotten a little closer than business partners with the younger Kratt brother, if their joint appearance at the recent Met Gala is any indication, however none of the team nor Lucy and Chris have confirmed anything. The heir has multiple pets; a Bengal cat named Christina and two snakes, a king cobra named Zeus and a reticulated python named Deep Pressure Therapy.’

✨️ 3 ships ✨️ Huhh I guess I don't really actively ship anyone nowadays ?? But probably Blue and Red from This Is How You Lose The Time War because those letters aaah ; and Yuu and Touko from Yagate Kimi Ni Naru are very sweet together and I liked how their relationship evolved !

✨️ First ever ship ✨️ The first one I remember is probably Sakura and Tomoyo from Card Captor Sakura, but in middle school, I was super obsessed with whatever Clarisse La Rue and Silena Beauregard had going on in the Percy Jackson books !!

✨️ Last song ✨️ The Age of Man, by Diva Faune ! :3 I've been listening to the album on repeat the whole week !

✨️ Last movie ✨️ Stillwater, by Tom McCarthy ! It was an ok thriller movie, not too much my style but a friend loved it aaaand ⭐️ Camille Cottin ⭐️ has a main role in it so... 👀

✨️ Currently reading ✨️ Currently finishing a history book about the history of breakfast in France and Western Europe and it's truly fascinating !! ☕️🥐 I was thinking I was starting a simple book about food but it's about so much more than that, colonization, geopolitics, globalization etc.

✨️ Currently watching ✨️ The Paradise, a BBC series by Bill Gallagher. It's an adaptation from one of my favorite books by Émile Zola, and it's about the beginnings of modern department stores at the end of the 19th century. We follow some of the people working there and around, and how this new way of making business is impacting their professional and personnal lives. I love how some of the displayed marketing techniques are still used nowadays and were precisely born at that time ! Of course there's drama and romance (so much more than in the book though) but it's still good and it's funny how they have moved and adapted the original setting from Paris to London (even the characters names were anglicized lol) ! Season 2 looks like an original story though !

✨️ Currently craving ✨️ some slices of chả lụa, a kind of Vietnamese sausage, but I've already eaten a whole one on my own last week so I need to stop.
