Thought I could watch the new Thor trailers and be chill but nope. Apparently I’m still not over it.
The Ragnarok reboot took a male character who was strong and confident but also genuine, honest, and always open with his emotions then turned him into an insecure, posturing, man-baby who cannot process complicated feelings and makes snippy passive-aggressive jabs at anything that threatens his ego.
But it's played as a joke so we're supposed to find it adorable.
And fandom somehow convinced itself this was incredibly woke and the most feminist thing ever.
I’m sorry, This is 100% a downgrade and it still fills me with rage five years later.

Hey, Molly! Tis Jordan. How did you end up liking L&T overall? I actually have ranked it second (though it and TDW are in a very tight race for 2nd) for the Thor movies. I cried a lot.
Hello my darling. Sorry it took me so long to respond. To answer your question, I have a mixed opinion. On one hand, it was wonderful to see Jane again and had some nice moments, but on the other I think they botched a lot of aspects of the Mighty Thor story that, in my opinion, were really critical to making that story land with me as hard as it did in the comics. Plus, Thor’s ending with Gorr’s daughter felt so shoehorned and unearned. For me, THAT ending compared to “I’d rather be a good man than a great king” puts this solidly below TDW. Above Ragnarok, but still not over the OG movies. I definitely have more thoughts than that but this is the tldr version lol

Back to my regularly scheduled “will Taika please SHUT UP” —
Tumblr media
Jane was never boring. She’s one of the characters I always related to the most in the MCU, so thanks for that comment. 🙄 I swear this guy thinks that literally every character was boring before he got his hands on them. He’s said this about Thor, Loki, Bruce/Hulk, now Jane (on top of previous insults about her not being Thor’s equal so he had to introduce Valkyrie who is apparently his equal because she’s more like a man). I’m so tired of him acting like everything that came before was the most uninteresting thing since watching paint dry and that he’s personally saved all of these characters because he thinks everything he touches turns to gold.
Tumblr media
I DO want her to be the same character, funnily enough. I LOVED that character. The same way I loved Thor and Loki and Bruce/Hulk, all of whom you decided also should no longer be the same characters anymore. There was nothing wrong with any of these people. I adored the Jane who walked around with science equipment because she had such a lust for discovery, she had this wonderful curiosity that drove everything she did, she had an adorable (and already funny, thank you) personality, and she always felt so very human. I loved all of her little quirks that made her seem real. I loved her various acts of bravery because they mean so much more coming from such a normal, real person who doesn’t have any powers and doesn’t even really fight. I don’t mind her gaining the powers of Thor, obviously I know this is a thing already, but I do mind acting like her character as a whole wasn’t good enough and that she needs an overhaul to be cool.
So tired of this behavior. Completely changing everything that came before to fit what you personally would rather have is not “fixing” things, it always just makes him look too juvenile to respect anything his predecessors worked on. This is not how you operate in a long running franchise.

AU where Loki doesn’t interfere with Thor’s banishment at all and it takes Thor years to prove himself worthy and when he returns to Asgard everything is just. The same. Nothing seems to have changed at all and everyone greets him like his absence was a minor obstacle that didn’t fundamentally change Thor and the worst part is Loki stepped down from the place as regent without any delay and Thor can’t help but feel there’s something underlaying the way his brother looks at him now and won’t let him touch him and Thor doesn’t know what he could have missed because he doesn’t think he would have found anything wrong with the things around him and how everyone behaves if he hadn’t spent time on Earth reflecting.
#the warriors 4 not being interested in anything Thor ‘learnt’ at all#and making it clear that Thor was punished unfairly and the AllFather’s decision had been harsh#Loki saying he’s happy for Thor and Thor sees the way the smiles are forced and he sees the way Loki avoids any touch#Thor hating the way Frigga talks about Loki’s short regency and Thor’s absence like it wasn’t two whole decades or something#like she’s so grateful to have her other son back without ever addressing why he was gone#Thor just. growing during his time on earth and being much more aware of the behaviour around him#he learns to be critical and assess why people around him may act a certain way#once he realises that it’s possible for him or anyone else to be fallible and make mistakes it’s over for Asgard for him I think#Thor returns and Loki gives him the throne and everyone expects him to obviously have the throne#and Odin is sleeping and Thor isn’t comfortable with the way everyone accepts him as king regent after the banishment#Loki who either never lashed out against Jotunheim or did and it was brushed away and no one thinks about it as anything#but Loki is still deeply affected and acts the way he always would have but Thor can feel it’s not the same#he knows something is wrong and Loki won’t say anything about it and Thor doesn’t know how to bring it up#Thor sees Loki metaphorically receding into the shadows to become a nonpresence so loud Thor hears it even after returning from decades away#Thor goes to Earth and gets his priorities in order gets a new worldview learns not to take what he has for granted#and finds out he actually despised Asgard#he’s been back a week and he can’t stand it

Okay last one last one, promise, but okay, showing how silly superhero movies are and how it’s just a bunch of people in Halloween costumes (as one reviewer praised Love and Thunder) is actually such a reductive fucking take?
Like??? Have y’all watched old superhero movies? They never took themselves seriously. (Okay some did and those were the good ones!) That’s why those particular movies sucked! They couldn’t commit to the idea of superheroes in the real world.
The beauty and originality of Marvel used to be that it felt like our world but what if Superheroes were real. They felt grounded yet magical!
“magic is just science we don't understand” I live and breathe that quote from the OG Jane Foster. I love it. It makes me dream again in a world that’s complete shit!
There’s nothing in current MCU that offers that. It’s just become the same boring superhero movies of the past. Unrealistic. Formulaic. And the worst part are the heroes that aren’t worthy of their hero title.
What a sad opportunity squandered by greed once again.

As much as I dislike Thor: Love and Thunder, I have to give it credit. Ever since it came out, I’ve noticed a lot more people being critical of Ragnarok in retrospect. It is now much more acceptable to criticize Ragnarok (and its characterization of Thor) compared to several years ago. When Love and Thunder was first announced, I feared it would further solidify Ragnarok as the definitive Thor version, but it looks like it is doing the opposite. There was a silver lining to Love and Thunder after all. Am I being petty? Yes.

Okay marvel fandom rant incoming so keep scrolling if you’re not interested —
Alright, I am SO tired of every news and media outlet after every fucking marvel movie DEMANDING to know the “GOAL” of this franchise!?
it just— it just makes me wonder — do…DO ANY OF THESE PEOPLE ACTUALLY READ COMICS !?!!!?!!!?!?!?!? DO ANY OF THEM ACTUALLY KNOW THAT THIS SHIT IS ABSOLUTELY SUPPOSED TO BE ALL OVER THE PLACE AND BONKERS AND FUN AND SERIOUS AND CRAZY AND WONDERFUL ALL AT THE SAME TIME !?!?!? Like LITERALLY L I T E R A L L Y !?!?!?!? Do they know that half the time there isn’t a “goal” over the combined storytelling of decades upon decades !? Sometimes, it’s just absolute chaos and authors and artists and creatives in comics retcon each other literally ALL THE TIME !?!?!?!? Carol Danvers has fought a clone of herself at least 4 times over the course of her comic book history — it’s a part of her character’s journey to always be fighting herself and challenging herself (literally). What other fucking storytelling device is going to have that other than superhero narratives???
I bring this up bc I want us to get over the “first ten years” of marvel studios — marvel has EARNED the public’s trust and money: they don’t NEED to make their name again. Endgame was a shot in the dark as far as I’m concerned — it was the combined weight of storytelling & luck over the course of a decade starting with Kevin Feige and Joe Quesada and Jon Favreau’s combined gamble with Iron Man and RDJ. We all got lucky with that era of Marvel bc it still had to earn the audience’s trust; it had to SELL itself to a public that up until that point had no real exposure to Marvel superheroes and its universe.
We won’t see that AGAIN.
Please, for the love of Chris Evans’ velvet clad ass at the 2019 Oscars, get OVER it. Please just go to these movies & have fucking fun — stop trying to guess at what they’re building to bc I’m so exhausted with news outlets telling me “Marvel is failing” or “Marvel is directionless” or “Marvel has lost its edge.”
No, you just don’t want to enjoy superhero movies anymore that are just self-contained and sensational. You NEED there to be something more and something ATTACHED to this epic labor of CGI, art, and ridiculousness. In other words, it’s not enough for you.
I’ve gone to Black Widow, Shang-Chi, Eternals, No Way Home, Doctor Strange, and Thor the past couple of years and I’ve loved all of them, but not because I expected there to be MORE attached to these movies. I didn’t need there to be MORE AND MORE AND MORE — I went and saw great superhero media. I saw characters I loved from the comics I grew up huffing transformed into fun and entertaining live action movies.
Please just go to these movies and watch Doctor Strange wear a fucking screaming cape of undead spirits and watch Thor turn an army of 7 year olds into epic warriors and watch Eternals for a beautiful & diverse cast of people with cool powers. And if you miss the Infinity Saga so much, GO REWATCH IT — but please leave the interconnected shit out of it. I’m exhausted.
And I’m so sorry if I offended anyone with this rant — not my intention, this is more just me RANTING my dumb opinions on the internet 🥰🥰🥰💖💖💖

So. Got back from Thor: Love and Thunder a while ago. Have… opinions.
THE GOOD
Christian Bale is fantastic as Gorr. Completely steals the show. Dominates every scene he’s in, delivers a powerful performance that is, frankly, too good for the movie. It’s like he’s in a completely different film then everyone else. That is also a negative more on that later.
Most of the acting is good in general. Chris Hemsworth continues to do Thor well, Natalie Portman is wonderful, Tessa Thompson sells her feelings, Russel Crowe manages to get some of the few genuine laughs, everyone is doing their best with what they were given.
Action scenes are very good. There aren’t enough of them, honestly, but what action scenes there are are pretty awesome.
The core story arc the film is built around is a great premise. This whole idea of Thor going on a spiritual journey of self-discovery while stopping Gorr’s deicide is a strong idea for a movie. Execution… is lacking, again more on that later.
Visuals are great. Yeah, it’s Marvel Studio’s usual overuse of CGI, but they DO manage to get the visual style and aesthetic of the proper Marvel Comics universe down really well. Eternity especially looked absolutely amazing just as he should.
Jane Foster with Thor’s powers was handled infinitely better then in the comics, not that it’s Jason Aaron’s crap run is a high bar to clear. She has an actual character arc, is genuinely likable, and they even had the balls to let her die and stay dead in Valhalla. Kudos.
The resolution of the story with Gorr’s daughter and all that was good. Powerful stuff, or it would’ve been in a better movie. Again, the idea was solid. Thor as a dad is good growth.
Soundtrack is nice. Hair metal and Marvel Thor go together like bread and butter.
THE BAD
Pacing is breakneck and godawful. Nothing has any room to breath. Everything is rushed. Everything meaningful or good or fun is crammed into little spaces to make room for the jokes. Speaking of…
The humor just does not work. There is far too much of it, disrupting and undermining the larger narrative, and most of it just does not land at all. It’s “self-aware” quippy humor at its most obnoxious and terribly executed. Some good gags here and there but drowned out by crap. Even good gags are dragged out and beaten to death; the fucking goats were funny the first two or three times and never again after that.
Tone is all over the fucking place. Christian Bale feels so much like he’s in a different movie it’s laughable and destroys any drama. It’s like a character from Schindler’s List stumbled into Animal House. Every somber moment is interrupted with cringeworthy gags. The “80s adventure movie” vibe is inspired and perfect for Thor, but not this specific story arc; perhaps if they had done something like Beta Ray Bill it would’ve worked better.
While the visuals are good in how they LOOK aesthetically, it’s also still Marvel Studios CGI-everywhere barf. Very little has weight. You can tell everyone is just standing around in green screens, no idea they’re even supposed to be reacting to.
Despite the good premise, the story is a mess. Clumsily executed on so many levels. The deck is constantly being stacked in Gorr’s favor with no attempt at nuance or counter-argument… but the film chickens out at last minute and refuses to commit, which is somehow almost more insulting and offensive then if it HAD gone all in with its “religion bad” undertones. Either throw the punch or don’t raise your hand at all.
Missed opportunities to do more abound. Like many of Marvel Studios’ work, there is no real effort to faithfully adapt stuff from the comics. Most characters are wasted as plot devices, especially Eternity. Arbitrary changes hurt the story. And again, the lack of depth and nuance is palatable; I thought they would go for “Jane gets sick but finds strength in faith and hope, while Gorr’s loss of faith and hope poisons him physically and spiritually” which would’ve been beautiful. But nope, “Gorr is right”.
Dialogue was terrible. In addition to all the awkward attempts at self-aware jokes, even serious dialogue struggled to sound right.
It feels like they couldn’t decide an audience. The premise, themes, violence, and risqué parts make you think they’re going for adults but on the whole it is very much a kids movie, in a bad way. Constant STUFF happening like jingling keys to entertain a kid which is probably what they were going for. Scared to ever get dark while having a paradoxically grim plot.
The representation and LGBT+ stuff is embarrassingly shallow and desperate “look at us aren’t we so progressive!” stuff. It’s all either done as a joke or in a quick, easily-edited out manner.
All in all… very disappointing, especially from Taika Waititi. Spider-Man, Doctor Strange, and Moon Knight made me think the MCU still had value. Love and Thunder and Ms. Marvel have disabused me of that notion, and even made me look back on those three with a more critical eye.
Saw someone muse that this may mark Waititi’s transition from “beloved indie darling” to “just another Hollywood insider” and yeah. I think so.

*Thor: Love and Thunder SPOILERS*
Here's part 2 of my thoughts on this movie.
Stormbreaker is sentient in this movie like Mjolnir.....SINCE WHEN?!?! The weapon never showed signs of being sentient in Infinity War nor in Endgame, so why now in Love and Thunder is it sentient here?! I'll tell you why. It was for an unnecessary plot point of having the ax be jealous of the hammer cause Thor wanted to call Mjolnir and Thor has to talk to Stormbreaker to reassure it that the ax isn't getting replaced.....that's why! 🤦‍♀️
Jane being Mighty Thor was actually cool to see. I'm surprised that she can fight in that form cause I didn't think she had experience in combat. Must've been something granted by the hammer.
Speaking of the hammer, apparently Thor put an enchantment on Mjolnir to protect Jane when she needs it...oh okay! Apparently, Thor can do that. Maybe he wasn't aware he can do that, but I don't know.
Oh yeah, how the two broke up. It was a "Dear John" letter....I'm not kidding, Jane wrote a breakup letter to Thor and left. Y'know, I didn't mind learning how the two broke up, but there was a nice deleted scene in Thor: The Dark World with the two and it was more serious and emotional than the scene we got in Love and Thunder. I wish that was where the Thor and Jane broke up cause that came off more amicable than the official breakup.
There's a place called the Shadow Realm which is where Gorr is hiding with the kids he's taken. Now, there is a Shadow Realm in the comics, which contained the Soul Masters and I think Knull and the symbiotes reside there too, but I could be wrong with that. But, in the MCU, it's just a barren planet of infinite darkness. Everything's black and white, no color. Also, every time the Shadow Realm gets mentioned in this movie, I think of Yu-Gi-Oh! 😆
Russel Crowe as Zeus....oof....big oof. I don't know if it's because of the actor or if this is how Zeus is supposed to be portrayed in this movie, but Zeus was just....yeah. Well, they definitely set him off to be a future antagonist. And, he's an @$$hole here, which honestly shouldn't be a surprise cause he's an @$$hole in Greek mythology.....also a grapist (minus the g). His accent....I'm not sure if his accent was supposed to be a Greek accent, but it was something.
Where the hell are the other Greek gods? Where is Hera, Zeus' wife?! Cause I'm pretty sure she wouldn't be okay with her husband having a harem(?) with him during that meeting. Also, are those men and woman gods too or are they mortals? And, why did they let Valkyrie take the lightning bolt?! They just stood there and stared at Valkyrie, and one of the woman got a kiss on the hand. I shouldn't expect much from this movie, but I can't help but ask these questions.
Speaking of the kiss on the hand, that's basically all you get with Valkyrie interacting with another woman. If you're expecting to see more of her bisexuality in this movie, I'm sorry but that's not gonna happen. A kiss on the hand and her talking about her maidens is all you're gonna get. Also, Korg at end gets a husband named Dwayne (get it, cause he's made of rocks....hahaha) so he's gay. I think that's all the LGBTQ+ representation this movie has, or I may have missed some.
And now the elephant in the room, Thor accidentally being stripped by Zeus. Now, I don't mind fanservice, but I'm probably one of the few people that got weirded out from seeing this scene (once Chris Hemsworth's butt was exposed, I immediately looked away). I know there are those that'll love seeing Thor naked, but think about the circumstances that led to that. Thor was forced to be nude in front of a lot of gods and his ex and friends. Sure it was an accident, and later on Thor said that he didn't have a problem with it, but what if he did have a problem with it? What if he wasn't okay with it? It would've been bad if Thor wasn't okay with it if that's the case. I also hope that the actor was okay with filming that scene, btw. Anyway, what if it was Jane or Valkyrie that was forced to be stripped? I know more people would've been vocal if that happened to either female characters. Cause, we live in this double-standard world where it's fine to force male characters in those situations when it's not okay to have that happen to female characters. I personally think no one should be forced in noncon scenarios , whether be male, female, nonbinary, or genderfluid.
Speaking of Jane and Valkyrie, it's really messed up that they thought to wait to help Thor because they wanna ogle at Thor's nude body. Like, I get that Thor's hot, but come on! Again if the genders were swapped, people would be more vocal on why this is messed up.
Korg almost dies....honestly, I would be a bit sad, but I'd move on. It's fine if other people like Korg, I'm just kinda indifferent really.
Zeus didn't die from getting hit by his own lightning bolt. I don't know how he survived that, but he did. Guess it's cause he's a god and him being the God of Lightning wouldn't get killed by his own weapon. Would give a sense of irony though.
When Thor was talking via astral projection or something (courtesy of Axl I think), Valkyrie thought it'd be amusing to tickle his nose with her braid. This was just an unnecessary comedic moment, I think, cause he's trying to talk to the kids and it's a very important task, and Valkyrie's trying to interrupt him cause amusement.
Eternity, in the comics, Eternity was the embodiment of the Seventh Cosmos. Eternity was all that existed along the fabric of time across the entirety of the Multiverse, having been formed to ensure the boundlessness of creation. In Guardians of the Galaxy, it was mentioned that he was one of the four cosmic beings that created the Infinity stones. Here? He's a wishing macguffin. That's his purpose! Come to him? He'll grant you a wish! Well, at least they got his shape right, but that's it. Hell he doesn't even talk.
Speaking of wishes, I'm gonna have to assume that Thanos didn't know about Eternity. Cause if he did, he'd have to get something to summon the bifrost to get to Eternity and have his wish granted to wipe out half the universe. Would've saved a lot of time if he knew. Now, it seems to imply that Thor and Valkyrie heard of Eternity so that got me thinking....why didn't any of them suggest to find Eternity to wish everyone that got dusted away to come back?! Would've saved A LOT of time, time travel wouldn't have been invented, Black Widow and Iron Man wouldn't have died, a massive war wouldn't have broken out, and Captain America wouldn't have gone back to the past! Either those two didn't know, or did know but forgot about it. *sigh*
Anyway, that's it from part 2. Part 3 will be the last part.

as a continuation to this post now that thor 4 has been released, i feel the need to express my visceral disappointment in the filmmakers (and in mcu fans for) 1) erasing brunnhilde’s original and intended love interest THOR ODINSON HIMSELF, 2) acknowledging her bisexuality only through a conversation (a scene that can be easily cut for other countries) with korg about her dead ex lover that was in the valkyrior attack, 3) NOT giving her same gender love interest despite the filmmakers and tessa thompson herself saying so not to mention the fact that she has minimal screentime as she is no longer the female lead in this film and 4) NOT GIVING HER MUCH OF ANY SCREENTIME OR ANY CHARACTER DEVELOPMENT OR A RELATED PLOT POINT OF ANY KIND and in the fans for not even acknowledging any of these wrongdoings

Now that I think about it, of all the characters in the Thor franchise who could have joined up with the Guardians of the Galaxy, Thor himself was probably the least interesting choice for that plot line. With his insecurities and constant need for attention, Loki would have fit right in (imagine the conversations he would have had with Nebula about being the unfavourite child). Valkyrie and Starboard would be drinking buddies but her and Drax would bond over grief. Frigga would bring everyone's mommy issues up by being a good maternal figure. Odin would would bring up everyone's daddy issues up by being a bad paternal figure. Heimdell would be the only responsible adult to ever board that ship. Even Jane, slightly unhinged scientist she is would have brought a fresh dynamic to the crew. Thor is just...kinda there.
