And honestly???? I’m not totally sure how to give tips— but I love, love, love unhinged characters in media, so I’ll use them as examples

(long rant below lol)

I’ve always been a big fan of silly, ‘crazy’ characters in animated movies and cartoons. I grew up on Batman the Animated Series and the original Teen Titans, which were full of silly, fun tragic characters.

Don’t get me wrong, i love a good edge-lord— but as a tot i thought the colorful, theatrical, insane bad guys were more fun to watch than the big scary serious ones (ESPECIALLY if they had a good villain song. A+ good shit)

And not just bad guys!! There are a ton of unhinged good/neutral characters that i absolutely adore.

((There are many more characters in both categories, but I’ll slide these examples in here for now))

My personal brand of “Unhinged” or “Crazy” characters definitely leans on comedy. That’s what i enjoy seeing and reading! I personally like it because it can help keep a story fresh and interesting. There’s an element of surprise and unpredictability with what a character might do, and i love that!!

I also really enjoy a touch of feral behavior in my unhinged characters. The lack of clarity and the danger that imposes can be a very fun tool to use, no matter the character’s moral compass. (I’m feral for feral behavior lol)

And impulses. Whether a character has a few screws loose or is generally a goober, they like to act on impulses. This often goes hand-in-hand with comedy, and that’s something I enjoy!! We get a lot of moments like that in Rise, and that was one of my favorite parts of that TMNT iteration.

But as far as writing goes, it’s been tricky for me. All of the characters I grew up or love have been visual— trying to find a good balance for reading has been a puzzle I’ve been figuring out as I go.

I read a lot manga (lol nerd) and comics, and I love how thoughts/dialog are depicted. Especially the really dramatic or impactful moments. (I’d add examples but I’m already at the Tumblr image limit LAME)

As strange as it sounds, I try to capture that “impactful visual” style in my writing. If I had ANY advice on writing unhinged characters, pay attention to pacing—

Short. Fast. A calculating thought. Perhaps a run on sentence that lacks punctuation to represent the rushing and disorganized thought process. A question? An answer with little thought. Is this moment amusing; describe how. Is it upsetting; describe how. Are the thoughts starting to scatter? M aybe s o…

Big moment statement.

Action or plan of next big move. Flow should never seem too uniform. Even in normal writing. Don’t be afraid of accentuating— but don’t overdo it. Remember, unhinged characters are impulsive. Have fun with that.

Just as a quick and dirty summary— when it comes to unhinged characters, I like to use comedy, feral behavior, and acting on impulses. I also like to keep it as visually appealing as possible for characters to give the eyes a little treat after reading walls of text. I like to use fun text formatting to help with the fun too (But don’t overdo it! Don’t make it feel like a chore to read) (<- says the girl who goes into way too much details sometimes lmao whoops)

But ultimately— have FUN!!! Unhinged characters are fun, so make sure you have fun writing/drawing/creating them!!

The morning was rough. Eren didn’t end up sleeping at all. Kicking the fantasy out of his mind left the door wide open for residence, letting thought after thought tour the inside and torment him for hours.

The worst being the knowledge that lately, all of his dreams never stopped there. After a certain point, the topics of them changed and the dreams started happening, like eerie premonitions grounded in future truth. It crept him out, knowing the future before it happened, and attempts at changing the inevitable were futile. The outcome always remained the same, and his picturesque sleep descended into unpredictable cascades and guessing games.

His visions were never like this, though. They were never of unsavory or naughty actions or thoughts or feelings towards someone else. Mostly he deemed them insignificant happenstances, events he just so happened to witness before they occurred. Even with the slightest changes within his control, the end result always played out the same.

Did he tell anyone? No. Of course not. Hey, guys, I think I can see the future. Nothing significant, just things like Jean falling and Levi’s punishments and titan attacks and oh, right, me fucking Mikasa. Yeah, like that’ll happen.

He definitely couldn’t share that last one. And after Armin confronted him, he knew it wouldn’t be fair to tell Mikasa either. Armin told him she was into him and he was oblivious to it, but, that’s exactly the thing, he wasn’t oblivious to it at all. Sure, he acted like it, he tried really fucking hard to, so give him an award. He only had a limited number of years, he felt he couldn’t condemn her to a short paradise with him and an eternal hell without him. The thought of leaving her after having everything with her was tortuous, so he decided it was better to never have and haunt her at all.

Until this dream, that is. That was it. That was all it could be. It had to be. Some were visions and some were dreams. That had to be it. He just didn’t understand the power enough to decipher the difference yet.

Eren was still convincing himself of that when it was just the two of them voyaging into the forest to set up the final titan trap. He desperately ignored that they were surrounded by this very forest last night, with this very breeze giving him these same goosebumps, performing the very same task.

“Eren, are you okay?” Mikasa dragged him away from his thoughts as she forcibly took the heavy case from his arms. “It’s not good to zone out carrying heavy stuff like this. You’ll hurt yourself.”

She’d removed the weight before he could process the scene, having already turned around and moved the box to its place on the side when he came to. Eren forcibly lifted his widened eyes to the back of her head after they drifted to the tasteful curve between her ass and her spine. “I’m fine,” he responded argumentatively, defensively, taking a step forward and fighting the urge to look down at her, “stop acting like you’re stronger than me.”

Mikasa bit back the laugh, smiling at the irritated look on his face. “But I am stronger than you.” She turned around and brushed by him, heading for another wooden box. “And I never said it was safe for me to zone out either.”

She turned around instead of picking up the next box. “That’s why I’m not doing it,” she taunted, winking, leaning against its top edge. Eren ignored that he noticed how the wood compressed into her plushy ass just the same as last night, but his body didn’t, and he felt the hot blood flood to his extremities.

Eren’s hand clenched into a tight fist to distract himself. He closed his eyes; he could hear the next line rattling in his skull. Besides, this is a two person job and you’re half a person when you’re in your head.

Mikasa exhaled deeply, calmly, and stood away from the crate. She spoke like she was reading the script, like it was plastered on his face. “Besides, this is a two person job and you’re a half a person when you’re in your head.”

“Oh, the strongest can’t—” do it herself? He cut himself off. It was a dream. He can’t be influenced by a dream.

She crossed her arms over her chest, a motion identical to the one from last night. “What? Can’t do it herself?” she finished for him, raising her eyebrow curiously. Eren gulped, fighting the urge to watch how her breasts responded to the push of her arms, to see if that was the same too. “Honestly, Eren, it probably would be faster to do it myself.”

She turned around and started walking away, towards a different set of wooden crates. “Don’t treat me like I’m useless,” Eren barked, following behind her like a dog, the adrenaline and blood rush making it difficult to ignore the script already finishing in his head.

Eren grabbed her wrist and pulled, forcing her to spin around. He took a step forward, pushing her into the familiar wooden crate, and effectively used his body to block her from moving.

“Then make yourself useful,” she whispered quietly, the weakness in her volume darkly contrasting the strength of her tone, hitting him with the weight of the past and the future. He knew what happened next: she tried to push him away, he turned her around, he bent her over.

She stared intently at him as she pressed her hand flat to his chest. The hot breath they shared set his lungs on fire, and he held onto the air until he'd exhausted it of oxygen. He exhaled as she slowly pushed him away, eying him like she knew he'd deviated from destiny.

She mumbled something as she brushed by him, but he couldn't hear her over the blood pounding in his ears and the loud thudding in his chest.

"Eren," Mikasa started slowly, softly yet firmly, not even turning around to address him, "Let me go."

He twisted his body to face her, to say he wasn't even stopping her from leaving, when he noticed his ironclad grip on her wrist and a gemstone titan hand protruding from the ground tightly holding her other one.

He let go as she wriggled herself out of it, her heart beating faster at the surprise. Mikasa's eyes caught on the newly-formed, familiar markings around his eyes, and she felt the familiar tingle between her legs the past few times he had them.

The once pink, now bright red blush on his cheeks screamed his embarrassment, but she couldn't take her eyes off the marks, couldn't take her mind off the fact that he even tried to restrain her with that.

She gifted him with ignorance, with the option of pretending it never happened as she walked by him again back to the crates, wanting to finish soon so she could take a bath.

"I... Mikasa... I..." He turned around and chased after her, stumbling over a loose root exposed by all their movement. He fell into her from behind, his hands reaching out and landing against the crate edge to catch his fall, his crotch pushing against her ass as her hips colliding into the crate, her wrists breaking her fall against the top.

-I read so many books and fanfictions as a kid, for dark series I love V.C.Andrews, for a lighter series I love the Inkheart series. For fanfictions I grew up on Danny Phantom fics and especially loved Danny Phantom/Teen titans crossovers.

1 - How many works do you have on AO3?

Fifty, apparently! Thirty-one of those is entirely Redacted-tober though lol

2 - What's your total AO3 word count?

45,673- five words off from a silly number hehe

3 - What fandoms do you write for?

Just RedactedAudio at the moment though I've been meaning to start writing some for Castleaudios!

4 - What are your top 5 fics by kudos?

1. Let’s get mischievous (and polyamorous) 2. fill my heart with song (and let me sing) 3. I won't cross these streets (until you hold my hand) 4. I had good intentions (and the highest hopes) 5. Baby, baby, baby (you're gonna set me on fire)

5 - Do you respond to comments? Why or why not?

I do! I'm not gonna lie- sometimes it can take days, even weeks, as I respond to comments in big batches, but I get to them eventually!

6 - What is the fic you wrote with the angstiest ending?

"cuddles (yet somehow still you disappear)"! Heehee, I finished this and immediately went to the Discord girlies (gn) like "hey babes I just did something mean~

7 -What's the fic you wrote with the happiest ending?

Hmmm, that's the majority of my fics, I'd say, but probably "bed (the brightest colors fill my head)"? It made me the happiest, at least~

8 - Do you get hate on fics?

Mmmm, depending on how you define "hate", then maybe? I've gotten comments that were not constructive or kind.

9 - Do you write smut? If so, what kind?

Yes with an asterisk. Smut is so difficult for me to write, so when I do, it takes fuckin forever. I definitely have a penchant for the kinkier kind, since the two smuts I've written feature bondage and consensual non-consent respectively.

10 - Do you write crossovers?

Another yes with an asterisk? Claire of Castleaudios fame is a character in "teenagers (scare the livin' shit out of me)" if that counts!

11 - Have you ever had a fic stolen?

Not that I know of, knock on wood!

12 - Have you ever had a fic translated?

No, but gosh, that'd be cool!

13 - Have you ever co-written a fic before?

Not yet, but Veau and Lexi and I have thrown around ideas!

14 - What's your all time favorite ship?

-siiiiigh- You know what it is. You know it's Alexis/Christian. I am going down with the ship, typing away at my laptop on the deck of the Titanic.

15 - What's a WIP that you want to finish, but doubt you ever will?

fucking all of them but especially my planned, multi-chapter fics- I get hung up on the outlining.

16 - What are your writing strengths?

-fights the temptation to say nothing- Umm, I'm pretty proud of my dialogue actually. I have a fair experience in script-writing, so I think I've got a good grasp of realistic sounding dialogue that is in the voice of the character.

17 - What are your writing weaknesses?

Smut, angst, and actually finishing what I start lol

18 - Thoughts on writing dialogue in another language in fic?

If I were knowledgable in that language or had a reliable beta who was, then sure!

19 - First fandom you wrote for?

Ummm... shit, was it Rise of the Guardians? It might have been, fuck... My self insert Cupid is flitting around somewhere on Fanfiction.net, smooching Jack Frost... and I didn't finish that multi-chapter fic either.

20 - Favorite fic you've written?

Hmm, that's hard to answer. I'm not super proud of it, but I think my favorite still has to be "Meet me on your best behavior (Meet me at your worst)". It's so OOC for Alexis now that we've canonically met her, but I adore the way I explore not just Christian with Alexis but also Christian with the pack.

When it comes to music I would usually see a meme like this and start thinking of all the ways I could wax eloquently abt my favorite albums, but I am currently depleted of my ability to write atm bc i am mentally maxed out due to school, so here have the short version in no particular order.

The Black Parade by My Chemical Romance. Fell in love with mcr the first time I saw them singing 'I'm not okay' on mtv2, but it wasn't really until Black Parade that I loved every song on one of their albums. I don't skip a single one when I listen to this.

The Archandroid by Janelle Monae. Love Janelle's older stuff more than her newer music with this album at the top. It's just a mixture of exactly what I like. Weird, quirky, and profound all at the same time.

Figure 8 by Elliott Smith. This album has always been great writing inspiration for me. His music, but this album in particular, appears on many of my mental and also actual playlists for my blorbos.

Little Plastic Castle by Ani DiFranco. When I was 18, I saw this album ranked as one to buy by some music magazine and so when I saw it a few months later at a CD store in the mall (remember those? or maybe you don't, you're all probably younger than me) I bought it on a whim. It was a good buy from my many MANY impulsive music buys over the years, bc it started my love for Ani's music. It was also my first foray into music that was somewhat against my upbringing ie conservative evangelical christian. Since then, I've seen Ani 6 times in concert and it's always been a good show.

Feel Good by The Internet. This is just the type of R&B that I love. Like Janelle Monae, it's a little strange with 8-minute-long songs that take twists and turns until they eventually morph into a completely different song, but it's an album I can play from start to finish.

When the Pawn ... by Fiona Apple. One of the few albums I wish I could get on vinyl but it's just way too expensive to justify spending on something i could easily listen to on the CD I bought ages ago (or more likely listening to on spotify). This album has been there for me at my lowest. Sometimes hearing someone else sing about bad breakups and being angry and sad over someone who hurt you, helps you cope with all the times you've had a fight with your SO or had a friend who ghosted you.

The Suburbs by Arcade Fire. Really sad that Win Butler turned out to be a garbage human bc I love this album, but find it hard to listen to now, knowing the band's lead singer is awful. There were other ppl in the band tho (a lot actually, it's a big band) so I figure I'll still add this album to my list for them and to be honest to myself.

Apollo 18 by They Might Be Giants. Flood was the first album I bought by tmbg, but Apollo 18 is the album I can listen to all the way through with the song Narrow Your Eyes being my fav. Considering how weird their music can get, Narrow Your Eyes is a pretty straightforward break-up song on an album that also contains songs like The Statue Got Me High and Hall of Heads.

The Con by Tegan and Sara. Call It Off is one of my most played songs ever, but this whole album is good and was my introduction to them. This was one of the last CDs I actually bought before I started just downloading everything with iTunes and then eventually moving on over to Spotify and buying vinyl.

Blackout by Britney Spears. Good for working out to when I used to work out and I just really love the song Heaven on Earth.
