Okay but watching season 4 after having been dragged back into this show because of season 5 is SO funny because the little changes and developments in characters and relationships are so dumb and amazing with the knowledge of where they started and where they're going like
Marinette in Glaciator 2: I'm going to practice confessing my love with you and you need to not be in love with me or have a risk of falling in love with me for this to be good practice
Chat: haha don't worry that won't be a problem
Chat, a season later, in the middle of kissing Marinette: IT'S BECOME A PROBLEM

“And lo! Here approaches my best knight,” the king announces to the jester as the knight squeezes through the door. The poor jester looks thankful to see her as he hurries out of the king’s gaze. “Come, show me your skill.”
The knight throws a few carefully angled swings for the king. He watches with a delighted expression, but she can see the soullessness in his eyes. Her stomach flips uncertainly.
“You are an excellent swordsman, knight,” he says flatly. “Now, tell me, why should I allow you to stay within my walls?”
The jester averts his gaze awkwardly. Is she about to get fired? “… Because I’m an excellent swordsman and your best knight,” she tries, and the king huffs in his telltale way of saying WRONG.
“Perhaps that was on me for being unspecific.” He picks up a wine glass from the golden table next to his throne, swirling it idly. “I hear you liaise with dragons.”
The knight’s attempt to keep her expression neutral fails miserably. The king watches with keen interest as her eyes widen and her mouth moves in an abysmal attempt to form some sort of defence. She’s acutely aware of the jester watching curiously too—whatever she says next will be the castle’s gossip for the next month. Maybe two if nothing of interest happens before then.
Well shit. Might as well fall into treason headfirst.
She reaches a hand into the front of her breastplate, earning a soft squeak from something inside. The king leans forward on his throne. The jester peers as close as he dares.
Her hand comes back with a short purple string laced around her fingers. Or she does at first glance, and closer inspection reveals her ribbon to be a tiny dragon, yawning and digging tiny claws into her fingers.
The king roars so loud the dragon startles. The knight and the jester don’t fare much better. “Beast!” he howls.
“Beast! Beast! Beast! Beast!” the room echoes back to them.
“You bring this creature within my walls?” he demands. “You slander my name—my rule—with your disregard to my kindness for you?”
“She’s harmless!” the knight cries over him. The dragon isn’t a fan of the racket, and is making a great effort to slip up her sleeve. “She looks after my finances.”
“Disgusting beast,” the king spits.
“The dragon,” the jester says quietly, valiantly ignoring the way the king’s stare snaps to him, “is your accountant?”
The knight fishes a coin from her pouch, gently tapping the dragon with its edge. Its gaze snaps to her gold, its past endeavour with her sleeve forgotten as it grapples for her coin. It twists its body around it excitedly, gnawing at the edge like a toddler, a quiet hum emitting from it as it does.
“That noise it is making,” the king shrieks, “it is going to attack!”
“No!” the knight shouts over him. “It’s like a cat—she’s purring. It means she’s happy.”
“Dragons do not purr,” the king retorts, but the dragon is undeniably making a noise that sounds remarkably like purring. The jester takes a cautious step closer.
The knight tucks her finger under her chin, giving it a hearty scratch. The dragon’s humming gets louder, her eyes closing blissfully at the touch.
“How does it… work?” the jester asks. The knight offers him a smile that she hopes conveys how grateful she is for his interest in the face of the king’s disgust.
“She takes my coins—my salary, my earnings, anything.” The knight adjusts her hand so the dragon sits more comfortably in her palm. She doesn’t seem to mind, too busy clamping her jaw around the gold to notice. “She keeps a hoard no one but her can find. I earned her trust, and whenever I need money she gives it to me.”
“She is a thief,” the king spits, but the rage is losing momentum in the face of such a cute little thing. The knight doesn’t miss how she’s suddenly not an ‘it’.
“I give her all the money she has. She’s just better at keeping money than most humans,” the knight says with a grin, “because she doesn’t spend it all in a tavern.”
The jester snorts. The king raises his eyebrows. Silence falls for a moment as they all watch the dragon get comfortable in the knight’s hand, her tiny body choking her coin, a claw wrapped around her thumb as she nestles in and closes her eyes.
The jester lets out a short “aww,” that’s louder than he probably intended.
“Tsch,” the king says. He leans back in his throne like he’s lost interest. “A beast is a beast. I am most displeased you were disloyal to my word, knight.”
“I apologise, your majesty,” the knight says. It’s all she can say, really. “I will fix things.”
“You… may keep the thing,” the king continues after a moment of intense deliberation. The knight attempts to not to look too surprised. The jester doesn’t even try. “But it is your accountant and nothing more. If I discover it torching my palace I will execute both it and you.”
“Accounting is what she’s best at, your majesty,” the knight says brightly. “You’ll never have to see her again.”
The king nods shortly, though his gaze is traitorously locked onto the purple ball in her hand. “I would not be adverse, knight,” the king says slowly, like he doesn’t quite want to, “if you felt it right to study. We did not know dragons purr, or like coin.”
“Your majesty?”
“Gather your resources and come back to me with knowledge of the beasts.” He waves a hand dismissively. “I will reconsider your treasonous actions if you can prove that your creature poses no threat to my rule or my people.”
A lot of questions are rattling through her brain. “Your majesty, what do—”
“That is all. Jester!” The king turns his attention away from her and back to the jester as he takes centrestage, looking a lot less stressed than before. He gives her a subtle nod and the lightest smile—a small gesture between the servants of the castle, a simple well done.
The knight leaves the hall with the king’s uproaring laughter following her. The dragon stays curled in her hand, and she runs her thumb over it carefully, the dragon’s body warm and prickly to the touch.
A knight to a scholar in one conversation. She doesn’t even know how to write.

Maybe I need adderall with adjunct meds. Only probably is I can't tolerate anything and the fact adderall hasn't triggered a bunch of neurological issues is so good I don't want to press my luck by being stupid with an ssri.

ok actually im brainrotting Sarah Heathcliff a lot
She seems like the type who tries to hold her emotions back, mainly to seem like she has it all together yet at the same time wears her heart on her sleeve, the keyword is tries to hold back her feelings, because she’s bad at it. when shes REALLY upset you will KNOW. I think she’s a chronic worrier, if something bad happens it will plague her mind for ages.
She sometimes idealizes the idea of her brother, she knew him for such a short amount of time and wishes so badly she could have been able to grow up with him. I think when she’s really feeling down she goes to his grave and just talks. Pretending that she has her older brother there to listen to her vent.
She has a geninue interest in the paranormal, I think she liked watching old ghost shows. I think this is how she and Adam got along in the beginning at least, discussing the possiblity of ghosts and other such things, Adam is/was a skeptic about this kind of stuff, and I think Sarah was a bit more of a believer in the unexplained.
I think there’s a small part of her that wants to leave behind everything, leave Bythorne and Mandela and go somewhere else, but she can’t, she always has someone or something there that she keeps as a reason to stay
I’d like to think she and Evelin were pretty good friends, Adam introduced the two and they started hanging out more and more, sometimes with Adam but sometimes without.

absolutely obsessed with how the music that plays in the final gameplay segment of totk isn’t the final boss theme, it’s not dangerous, it’s not even an uplifting “hero” boss fight theme (a la splatoon), it’s just pure, raw you. just you and zelda, like it should have been all this time, without any of the “hero of hyrule” or “zonai” or “ganondorf” mixed in. without rauru’s arm, without any of the baggage, just soaring, uplifting music that signifies that the hard part is over, your goal is right there, she’s right there, and this is it. it’s going to be over. the theme from the start of the game, as you dove into the unknown to save the one you love—and her theme, everything you’ve fought to save—but even though the fight is over, even though ganondorf has been defeated and hyrule has been saved, it’s still not over for you, and it still comes back to that eternal link between you and zelda because just like it always has been: you are link, and you are fighting to save zelda.

and is there not just generally a certain level of decency that would make you like ease up on a person who's obviously more than a little frazzled i am sorry that i cant process all my feelings and regurgitate them to you in an easily digestible manner while im actively In a situation or have a prepared disclaimer about how im so sorry but im just overwhelmed and need you to leave me alone right now or whatever else maybe i just dont know maybe i cant tell you exactly what im feeling or need and if i have to figure it out and explain that to you my brain is going to explode. but you could read the room. is there not a point where a friend would probably just go oh okay let me not continue pushing this person let me take a moment to reflect on their state and perhaps try to ease that or at least not keep fucking pushing on it. and also maybe not choose these moments to make otherwise innocuous but contextually just kinda meanspirited jabs. ok whatever
#not to be a sensitive little bitch except im not.#i dont want to be rude or too explicitly open about the things i dont really like to talk about#but sometimes. frankly. people need to take on the weight of their own feelings. insecurities. thoughts. etc and then some#some of us grew up with little to no emotional support and in fact took on the weight of their family's issues and the brunt of their#emotional immaturity and sometimes that makes someone feel fundamentally rattled and unsafe in moments like that#some of us had pretty much every big personal emotional. thing. that happened to them minimized and turned into some tragic#family conversation. or had someone reply like huh idk if that could have happened to you i certainly dont remember that#and then you wonder if people were ever looking out for you and if the ones that did just truly didnt care.#um. anyway. this is not just to be like oh im so quirky and different and traumatized lol but im reaching a boiling point when it comes#to people just like. doing this shit. or whatever. im going to start screaming#i shouldnt have to bare my fucking soul to you for you to go oh huh maybe this is a sensitive subject perhaps#frankly we arent the same and we dont relate and aw bummerooni ik im not the only sufferer but good god.#our lives were very different in some ways!#and sometimes all i want is for someone to say its ok kid you did good#again. not to be dramatic. but when ive talked about MY upheaval of feelings or w/e like if thats been impacting#how ive been acting and people start crying at me or get all whatever. oh it makes me wanna be the one to pass the torch#yeah man imagine how tired we are.#ok talking incoherently now so im gonna go do my job i guess.#abby talks#i know no one will save me but maybe sometimes it’d be nice to share the weight regardless

do a trick
I probably haven't drawn him in a year, it's felt a lot longer though. Last time I drew him was when we were on our annual trip to my birth state (or was annual lol)
I hate going on those trips, it's always such a nightmare. I do think about those people on an almost weekly basis and I just kinda wallow in my thoughts and theories for a bit. I really do wonder what would've happened if I had "stayed", probably would've devoted myself to becoming a nun- it's bizarre to think about knowing that my father would disown me (or at least lose some sort of respect for me, very hard to read) if I did.
I'm extremely fortunate to have been able to be rescued, I can't imagine the torment and punishment my mother went through to get me back and I'll forever be indebted, but I can't help but think she's lying to me. I wish I didn't think that but I'm always so skeptical and unsure about everything, I was really young when all of this happened so I can't really rely on memory either. Very frustrating, all of it. Hoping to move past this one day, I don't know why I have this in my stupid-weekly-things-to-think-about list when it really doesn't matter.

Reasons why I think Sam could be Catholic:
Jessica was raised Catholic and prior to Stanford if he were religious I don't think it'd have been as formal as when he was living with her
Uses what appears to be a Catholic rosary
Lucifer possessed an Archbishop specifically after possessing a rock star Sam loved & telling him he'd "make him watch". Makes more sense if Lucifer would have done something specifically to mess with Sam's faith
Well like. have you seen him and how he talks about things. yeah.

mm thinking about helping your highness get ready. going to your chambers to wake you up, cooing softly at how messy your hair is, and helping you up out of bed. picking your clothes out and helping you get dressed, softly praising you about how regal you look. I'd make an offhand comment about how you wear whatever I pick like a dog wears his collar and click my tongue. you hear me, but I wave you off and direct your attention to breakfast. setting your food on the table in front of you and telling you to be a good boy and eat your food, clicking my tongue. again, you question me, and again, I wave you off. that continues all day. I help you with something, praise and click, and then move on before you think too much about it. eventually, you subconsciously begin to anticipate the clicks and associate them with me serving and praising you. one day, I notice you struggling with some work and decide that you're in need of a break. so, i come up behind you and rub your shoulders. i tell you that you've been working so hard, click. you've been such a good prince, tending to your responsibilities, click. on and on i go, gradually pulling you away from your work and closer to me. at this point, even if you don't know what to expect from me getting on my knees, your body does; to be serviced.
- 🌹
whining?? whining??? mean??? MEAN??
hi hii thank you for the ask but hgh this one's so mean. i'm not squirming at the thought of being spoiled and praised and clicker trained by my very good dog. nope not at all.
hh. my brain has been melting at this one for a bit and i cannot think of WORDS but. the concept is so good i think like !! even just the. bit about taking care of me in the morning is soo. i may be a prince but i am also a pupy... i'm not much of a morning person so i'm sure i'd be extra pliant too... going along with it without much fuss
i would be confused at first of course but you take such good care of me that i'd simply just get used to it with no need for too many questions. i wouldn't think about it too hard.. there's so many other things for me to think about after all. not even realizing i'm getting used to it and anticipating it.... clicker training your prince is!! very mean and cruel but also. maybe i am. a dumb dog at heart too so it would be so easy.. anticipating the clicks not unlike how i anticipate these asks and get. so excited when i see the rose at the end i mean what who said that?
hgh. by the time you'd actually be able pull me away from work i'd be so desperate for it. squirming in my chair and whining a little bit because my body is expecting it even though my brain hasn't caught up yet. but since you made this happen you'd better take responsibility and take good care of me (please..)

trimax vashwood really hits so different i dont think you guys understand. i truely thought this was just a shipping goggles situation until i read the manga. i didnt get it. i thought it was people shipping two men just because they stood next to each other. trimax took my hand, led me out of the cave, and showed me the object i had only ever seen shadows on the cave walls of. its genuinely Different.

Wish it was a real downfall but like always it is only on social media and not affecting her pocket. Her album is back to #1 sales in the US this week and her tour is on the way to become the highest grossing tour in history. Casual fans and her real fans can't see her doing any wrongs.
i honestly didn’t think it would, at least not this quickly. but the huffpost published an article about her and i haven’t seen anything like it about Her in a hot minute. basically since she rebranded herself in the last few years. of course a lot of her fans will try to excuse her behavior because it doesn’t affect them and they themselves are shitty people but i’ve seen a lottttt of fans reckoning with the admiration they have for her music (to each their own) and the discomfort they now feel about her as a person (which shouldn’t be news to anyone).

the phantom hourglass manga is the one i care about the most out of all of the loz manga and therefore the one i am most willing to rip apart because of its relation to the game, its own problems, and the potential that was lost or thrown away for any reason at all
making this separate than the list of things i liked about the phantom hourglass manga
im not going to be too organized about this; ill go by topic and in each topic go in chronological order through the manga and everything else will probably be all over the place
im not even going to touch the story yet and just go after the art off the bat because i really believe that this manga has the weakest art of all of them. i dont know if its due to some kind of time crunch or a lack of care but its really… im not expecting any of these books to have killer art, but in ph it just feels like there was less effort with inconsistencies in some designs and either very low detail or just absent backgrounds. this feels like a mean-spirited critique since i understand that manga is difficult to create and requires a lot of effort but its just visually… worse than the loz manga that came before or after it.
some specific grievances i have with the art are things like inconsistent designs of some characters (linebeck is hard to draw and i get that but hes just… never totally consistent) and some items like weapons (the shape of bellumbeck’s sword changes during the fight for some reason) and stuff is… left out. the fire temple has basically no layout since link’s just in some flavor of void for the entire blaaz fight. one of the panels with linebeck’s ship shows it from the behind at an angle where you should see the deck but its just not there
Tumblr media
his ship is also missing its chimney on the cover art
this is also more of an opinion thing but the way astrid looks almost nothing like her game counterpart is just… it’s a nickpick based on opinion but that is Not The Same Character.
you can absolutely tell a fantastic story with lacking art, but the reason why im criticizing this manga’s art is because its the tenth in a series of manga who, up until this point, has had consistently good art, and then it drops off with weak backgrounds and character inconsistencies.
plus, i really care about how this story is visually portrayed.
the pacing, even with half of the story cut, is also a bit of a problem. as far as i'm aware, this is the only loz manga to have significant chunks of the story cut out, and while it admittedly works well with only half of the story, it fucks with the pacing a bit. specifically, it screws over linebeck's arc, which i'll talk about more in a different section, but it also kind of glosses over the phantom sword and (obviously) loses some possible time for further character exploration and whatever. the cut from the ghost ship right to jolene right to the final boss is, while handled well, kind of abrupt.
obviously, cutting half of the damn story will make what's kept feel a little too fast, but even some of the stuff more original to the manga is paced weirdly or is just... eh.
there's a bit after neri is found where linebeck decides to stop working with link and basically ditches him and this whole thing lasts one to two goddamn pages before everything is patched up and good and... why even include it if you turn the page and oh problem fucking solved. it's even a little out of character for linebeck at that point since a few pages before he's seen getting the sands of time for link and it's... it make sense but it's a really extreme character choice and while it serves its purpose (introducing the idea of linebeck not valuing other people very much and realizing that) it's still extremely brief.
the added stuff with linebeck being a past member of the ghost ship, while fine and interesting at first glance is also a strange choice that doesn't work all that well? it works for characterization and all of that but it makes for a weird situation with linebeck's character motivation where he's a coward and after the ghost ship for the treasure on it, but if he was present on the ghost ship literally as it was fucking gutted then he would know exactly what the danger of the ship is and want to avoid it no matter what. in the game his motivation for going after the ghost ship works because he doesn't know for certain whats on that ship and has never been on it. plus, aside from character backstory and whatever, it doesnt serve much of a purpose. linebeck even makes some comments about the ship's interior and the like but it all amounts to nothing because link never actually goes into the ship anyways. it's just a weird backstory to give linebeck.
the shuffling around (and cutting of one of) the three final bosses is also weird. it makes sense for the story order the manga goes with, but it actually lowers the stakes for the bellumbeck fight (in the game literally everything is on the line but in the manga its just linebeck and they absolutely use that to their advantage but still) and mixing the ghost ship fight and bellum fights make the final encounter really brief and kind of anticlimactic in some way. it's difficult to express, but the order of the final bosses in the game makes bellum a more interesting villain and melds with linebeck's arc in a much more interesting way. it feels like there was a specific reason for that given order and for the manga to just toss that aside means it loses something.
also reserving pretty much an entire chapter for jolene is A Choice to make. there's nothing wrong with using an adaptation to flesh out a character but here you don't learn anything new about jolene she just kind of makes very little sense in her motivations when you give her more screen time but dont change her from wanting to kill linebeck for fucking off but also still liking him maybe. good for you if you like jolene since she got more time here but they did pretty much nothing interesting with her
this is something i figured out while writing this, but the manga actually does Fuck All with the actual hourglass. you could've cut the fucking thing out and it wouldn't have effected the story too much. link never goes into the temple every again and the phantom sword is just. made on request with link having no interaction with it before using it to kill bellum. the only time the phantom hourglass is actually plot relevant aside from link first getting it and then using it to gather sand is when bellum tells link to bring it to the temple and then it's used exactly once to stop time and then it's used as proof that everything happened. oshus says link needs to use it and the sand to break the curse over the temple of the ocean king and then that never actually happens the sand and the hourglass is just used once to stop time once and otherwise it might as well not be in the story it's so weird. it's also implied that oshus needs the sand to restore tetra after he returns to his own true form but they dont say anything about that after he initially mentions it so who cares. oshus also tells link that zuaz will teach him how to defeat bellum. link never meets zuaz and still beats bellum anyways.
it feels like they cut the latter half of the story but forgot that the fucking majority of linebeck's entire goddamn character arc happens in that part of the story. sure, most of the cutscenes and whatever happens in the first part and linebeck does develop a bit in the first part but he doesn't really start to change until after the ghost ship, when you get his letter and his dialogue starts to change slightly to suggest that he's starting to like link more and care about something other than the possibility of treasure. the manga cutting out the latter half of the story but still making linebeck's arc end in similar places makes his arc feel really fast and even abrupt in the manga. he goes from being fully motivated to get treasure and still kind of selfish to caring a lot for link and deciding not to wish for treasure and the time was just NOT put in to make that a smooth transition.
honestly linebeck overall got fucked in the manga more than any other character. his arc was shafted, his characterization is strange and even kind of changed from the game, he's never drawn consistently and doesn't even look great since he seems to be stuck between two styles when he's drawn, he's more shallow and generally a less interesting character, and while most of that is probably a product of having one book to cover ph, it's still a problem.
like with all of the loz manga, the extremely limited amount of space and time the story is given absolutely fucks it over so you really are stuck with telling nothing more than an abridged and seriously inferior version of the story. i dont care how good the original stuff is if it barely qualifies as a good adaptation. the story wasn't told all of the way and none of the game's strengths are kept or expanded upon. you lose the majority of the best character's arc and depth. half of the story was cut. the title item is barely used. it feels like they didn't really care about adapting phantom hourglass and just hashed out a trimmed-down version of the story to fit into 188 pages and while there was some effort put in with a bit of a unique take on linebeck but it just falls flat when everything around it feels like it wasn't given a second thought.
i'm not suggesting that the author's didn't fucking care, i don't know what the process was with this, but it just... it doesnt feel like they actually wanted to earnestly create a good adaptation of this game. i have an altered perspective on all of this because this game is my special interest and something i deeply care about and inspect the little details of and it kinda just sucks that phantom hourglass never got a good adaptation because... this game has some serious potential for a really good extended adaptation.
Unlike the other Zelda games that the other manga cover, the structure of the journey in Phantom Hourglass has an insane amount of space for fleshing out of character, exploration of new concepts or character relationships, or just.. whatever you want. Providing you cover the original story, of course. Off the bat, there's a nebulous amount of travel time between islands, which can be used by authors for character moments and interactions and just little moments that can be used to further themes or concepts. You can use the implied time overseas between islands to have some interactions between Link and Linebeck. Show the three fairies hanging out with each other. Show the whole crew becoming closer to each other as time drags on.
Linebeck's existence and function within Phantom Hourglass alone is so fucking unique and amazingly good for an extended adaptation. In most other Zelda games, the companions are pretty much glued to Link's side and follows him through dungeons, or they're characters locked in a specific place, more or less divorced from Link's quest, but Linebeck is an integral part of the plot, present for every part of it as it advances, and yet he's out doing fuck-all while Link is in dungeons. He's a great excuse for authors to add detail to islands, write new characterization for background characters, or even just give Linebeck his own b-plot running concurrently with the game's normal plot. He's important to the plot and yet doesn't touch the gameplay; he's free to do whatever you want while Link does dungeon stuff. One possible idea I've mentioned before is the idea of, while Link is in the temple of the Ocean King, is to create and explore a possible relationship between Oshus and Linebeck. Scenes of them talking can be used to flesh out Oshus as a character and to add some extra depth to Linebeck and make his arc more interesting to follow.
There is... SO MUCH you can do with Phantom Hourglass if you care enough to do it, and I'm just so frustrated that we got this solid 4/10 of a manga.
