rules: list 9 favorite books of 2023 or 9 books on your TBR list for 2024
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
My nine favorite (first time reads) in no particular order:
She Gets the Girl by Rachael Lippincott and Alyson Derrick: Classic rom-com shenanigans with a pair of delightful characters.
Good Different by Meg Eden Kuyatt: A middle school girl who feels like she doesn't fit in with her friends discovers that she's autistic. This one is written in verse and beautifully expresses a neurodivergent perspective.
Spear by Nicola Griffith: A gorgeous re-imagining of the story of the Lady of the Lake, rich with historical texture.
The Witch's Heart by Genevieve Gornichec: Norse mythology brought stunningly to life in the story of Angrboda, a beautiful witch and the wife of Loki.
The Darkness Outside Us by Eliot Schrefer: Two young men from warring countries set out on a rescue mission to Jupiter's moon Titan, but they must work together when evidence suggests that their mission may be going horribly wrong.
In Memoriam by Alice Winn: A love story set against the horrors of the Great War that explores how war damages and breaks people, but also how love can help them survive.
Odin's Child by Siri Petterson (translated by Siân Mackie and Russell Garrett): The first in a trilogy inspired by Scandinavian folklore about a girl who discovers that she doesn't belong in the world she inhabits.
The Road to Roswell by Connie Willis: A hilarious adventure begins when a reluctant bridesmaid for an alien-themed wedding meets a very real extraterrestrial.
Wrath Goddess Sing by Maya Deane: Building on the story of Achilles dressing as a maiden in Skyros, this book takes it a step further with a transgender Achilles being granted a woman's body by Athena before going to fight at Troy.
While many of these didn't come out in 2023, I read them all for the first time that year. Not all of these were perfect, but they all made me me feel something profound, and I recommend each one wholeheartedly! Thank you to @noburrowingtactics for tagging me!

Account Introduction!!
I am called by many names but you can call me Metis on this account!! I am transgender and use xenopronouns… So please DNI if you are an anti!
My pronouns : He/Lust/Mew/Fang/Zomb/Vamp/Paw/Plush/Dolly/Moon/Dark/Fluff/Yip/Claw/Rot/Caw/Gore/Whisker/Crow/It
Besides that I post and interact with the following subjects below!
Witchcraft
Demonolatry
Xenogenders/Xenopronouns
Poetry
Art
Literature
Cannibalism
Languages
Philosophy
Spirituality
Native culture
Blogging my life
Studying
There are what I mostly will be interacting/posting about. I am a witch (that is an omnist spiritualist) that practices multiple crafts and believes in well everything. Which leads me to studying in demonolatry, as I feel it calling for me. Of course I am native as well (Ojibwe) so following what I have grown up with I am heavy with spirituality! And what my tribe has taught me ofcofc.
Besides all of that I am interested in art, as I have a passion in drawing. But besides art I am deeply in love with poetry, although my poem writing is still a bit rusty… Literature is my beloved as it brings knowledge and loveable stories to life. But besides literature I am quite interested in philosophy, as it is an interesting topic. Being interested in philosophy leads me to also love studying for my future. As I wish to be land in an amazing college suited for my wishes. And learning languages will definitely help with that! I know English fluently, and I know a bit of Russian, Japanese, and Ojibwemowin. But I wish to become fluent in all of these languages. And perhaps even other languages will appear before me to learn.
All of this will lead to me blogging about my life I suppose. But of course there is two odd balls in that list. The first one I will mention is xenogenders and xenopronouns, I am heavily involved with both the mogai community and otherkin community as I support both. And I like to give my support by liking and interacting with whatever I can. And the next subject would be cannibalism. Someone I know is a cannibal while also not being a criminal. So I wish to study about cannibalism and see ways to help that person I love dearly. Without going down a dark path… Even if consuming human flesh will affect them in the long end.

There! Finalized my model sheet for my HPMA girl, Anastasia Read! You can read more about her here at this moodboard post I did for her, but basically she’s a Gryffindor who dreams more than she talks and is determined to be the heroine of her own fantasy story.
Tumblr media
Some more info about Ana under the cut...
Ana doesn’t resemble her biological parents, John Read and Bonnie Pinkstone-Read, much at all except in hair color (both are also brunettes). Her soft, endomorph frame, strong shoulders, and bluish gray eyes come from her maternal grandfather. As an adult Ana’s even taller than her mother Bonnie, who’s very petite all the way around.
Poor Ana is actually quite self-conscious about her weight, thanks in no small part to the, um...attempts at support from her mother Bonnie, who frequently expresses “concern” about Ana’s health because of her size. At school she wears a highwaisted skirt to hide her tummy, as if she wore a skirt like all of the other girls’, she’d look like -- in her mother’s words -- “a sack of potatoes tied in two.” It’s also the reason she always wears pants, tights or leggings -- she thinks her legs are very chubby and unattractive. Despite her roundness, however, Ana’s also always had very strong shoulders and is on the taller side compared to her other female classmates, which helps her put off a tougher image.
Bonnie Read’s biggest foible as a mother is her immaturity. She wants to be Ana’s “friend” more than a mentor most of the time, and so has difficulty enforcing discipline or even in setting a good example. Bonnie almost immediately dated three other men after divorcing John, all of whom either pointedly ignored or expressed open resentment toward her daughter Ana, before she finally met, dated, and married her second husband. Bonnie’s dependent personality and (as mentioned) subconscious weightism doesn’t help matters either.
Ana’s father John Read is an active-duty soldier. He’s actually an incredibly absent father who never really had much interest in having a family, but Ana’s always put him on a bit of pedestal, partly because of her image of him having become a soldier for noble reasons like serving his country and partly because him not being there to actively be a poor parent like her mother Bonnie made it easier for Ana to romanticize John in her mind. Ana writes to John very frequently. John doesn’t write back much at all.
Ana’s best mentor figure is her stepfather, Bradley Pinkstone (a wizard and Gryffindor alumnus himself). He and his two grown sons Jasper and Preston (a Slytherin and Gryffindor in their day) are very affectionate toward Ana, which kind of weirded her out at first, considering she’s not their blood relative and she’d assumed they’d hate her...but oh, was she ever so glad to be wrong! The new Pinkstone-Read family live in a rather pretty brick house in Stratford-Upon-Avon.
Her best and favorite class is History of Magic, but she tends to enjoy all classes where she can write essays. She’s always been miles ahead of her classmates when it comes to writing, especially considering that there are no specific writing or grammar classes taught at Hogwarts. Just about every written assignment Ana’s ever submitted has gotten an O.
Contrariwise, she struggles in classes that are more “physical” like Care of Magical Creatures or Flying.
Despite not getting into Flying class or Quidditch, though, Ana does take time to practice flying on her own at night when no one else is around. She finds moonlit broom rides incredibly romantic and great inspiration whenever she’s suffering from writer’s block.
Ana’s an avid journal keeper! She goes through a good five of them every year. She generally magically shrinks her finished creativity journals for easier storage, and she always hexes whichever one she’s currently writing in order to make sure no one else can open it. (If you’re somehow lucky enough to get her permission, she’ll open her creativity journal for you so you can read it and look at the doodles she did.)
Her favorite authors are Jane Austen, Charles Dickens, C.S. Lewis, J.R.R. Tolkien, Hans Christian Andersen, and William Shakespeare. Her favorite type of movies are high fantasy like The Princess Bride, Stardust, and The Lord of the Rings.
Ana’s also huge into Japanese manga! Her one true love is Sailor Moon, but she’s very fond of shoujo manga titles like Cardcaptor Sakura, Ouran High School Host Club, and Fruits Basket.
Ana’s favorite musical genre is symphonic metal, introduced to her by her oldest stepbrother Jasper. Her favorite bands are Within Temptation, Evanescence, and Nightwish.
As a teenager, Ana falls in love with the Victorian Gothic and steampunk subcultures, the first of which Jasper dabbles in and the second of which Preston is hard-core into. Being an INFP, she loves the creativity, historical bent, and romanticism in both movements. At the Pinkwood-Read family’s formal Christmas parties, you’ll often see all three of them wearing top hats with their holiday ensembles.
Ana does NOT make friends easily, but once you do become her friend, she’s always got your back. Her BFF is Hufflepuff Robin Isherwood @cursebreakerfarrier. She also gets along pretty well with Gryffindor housemate Lorcan O’Donnell @unfortunate-arrow, Slytherin Jordi Prewett @cursebreakerelmswood, Ravenclaw Noa March @that-ravenpuff-witch and Hufflepuffs Mitch C. Hodge @department-shoe-stud and HG Gray @ljthebard1. They all either call Anastasia “Ana” or “Annie” -- her stepfather and brothers call her “Anya.”
Upon finding out how much her BFF Robin likes flowers and plants, Ana went out of her way to collect some books on the Victorian language of flowers. (Her brother Jasper gave her a hand with finding some good ones.) One Valentine’s Day she even sent Robin a friendship bouquet of irises, goldenrod, oak-leaved geraniums, and southernwood without any sort of note -- not that it was necessary, given that flowers’ message translated to “Just wanted to let you know you’ll always be my best friend.” (Everyone else assumed Robin had this mysterious secret admirer.)
If anyone rubs Ana the wrong way, they can expect a formal dueling challenge. Ana is witty on the page, but not verbally, and she’s upfront and honorable enough when she’s angry to want to “take it outside” and settle the dispute on the dueling field the way a knight would avenge a slight to their king’s honor, rather than be backhanded or sneaky about it.
Ana may be cisgender and identify as straight, but she is the ULTIMATE LGBT+ ally. Even when she was a kid, she would get very hot under the collar about homophobia, racism, or any other sort of prejudice, thanks to her Gryffindor sense of honor and her INFP sensitivity, and after Bonnie married Bradley and Ana met Jasper (who’s transgender FtM himself), Ana became all the more passionate about LGBT+ rights. She only becomes more vocal in her support after some of her friends come out of the closet too.
Ana’s greatest fear is being insignificant. This is depicted in boggart form as the whole room around her suddenly becoming huge, to the point where she’s as tiny and helpless as a mouse.
Ana’s Patronus is a black swan. If she ever became an Animagus, she’d be a large brown and gray tabby cat with oddly colored bluish gray eyes.
I could see Ana one day becoming a well-regarded author of fiction books for young magical children.

Transgender / Non-Binary Book Reccs
Tumblr media Tumblr media
links to Asexual / Aromantic, Bisexual / Pansexual, Gay (mlm), and Lesbian sheets
TCCL stands for Tulsa City-County Library, in Oklahoma. These reference sheets list the books physically available (not including ebooks only) at the 24 library locations in Tulsa, Oklahoma. For folks outside of this range, I suggest double-checking your local libraries, as well as the apps OverDrive, Hoopla, and YourCloudLibrary!
An online version of this list can be found at https://bit.ly/2lujZLR. This goodreads shelf includes ebooks, new releases, and books not available at the library! It also features a notes section that specifies which character is trans / non-binary / genderfluid / intersex / etc, their exact identity if stated in the text, and whether they are a main or side character.
In the shelf list along the left side of the page, you can also find shelves for other LGBT+ identities, as well as books featuring characters that are disabled, fat, mentally ill, neurodivergent, and people of color. All the books are cross-tagged, so a book featuring a black disabled trans woman would appear in the shelves named disabled, POC, and transgender.

Review: All Out: The No-Longer Secret Stories of Queer Teens Throughout the Ages by Saundra Mitchell Rating: 4/5
“Tomorrow’s all about the life we choose.” - The Sweet Trade by Natalie C Parker
I've wanted to get my hands on this anthology for so long and I was very glad it lived up to my expectations. There's an amazingly broad range of LGBT+ characters - including a few asexual ones - but it would've been cool to have a few more #OwnVoices authors, especially transgender/NB authors. Another awesome LGBT+ YA anthology.
Reviews and ratings of each story below the cut.
Roja by Anna-Marie McLemore - 2/5 - If not for the author’s note accompanying this one, I wouldn’t have understood what made it queer. But the historical aspect was cool.
The Sweet Trade by Natalie C Parker - 4/5 - Fun! I’m always down for queer pirates.
And They Don’t Kiss At the End by Nilah Magruder - 5/5 - Disco, skating, and an asexual character. Loved it!
Burnt Umber by Mackenzi Lee - 5/5 - I read this one ages ago when the publishers put it on their blog. Absolutely loved it - especially the Amsterdam setting. Need more stories set in the Netherlands.
The Dresser and The Chambermaid by Robin Talley - 5/5 - Such an adorable story featuring a romance between two servants to a princess. Loved the banter among all the staff.
New Year by Malinda Lo - 4/5 - An interesting, intersectional look at San Francisco in the 1950s. I liked Judy and learning that Chinese women helped get us to the moon as well.
Molly’s Lips by Dahlia Adler - 5/5 - Short and bittersweet. Enjoyed it.
The Coven by Kate Scelsa - 4/5 - I am very down for French lesbian witches in the roaring 20s. We should rekindle this tradition next year ;)
Every Shade of Red by Elliot Wake - 4/5 - TRANS ROBIN HOOD IN LOVE WITH A DEAF WILL SCARLET *vibrates* also asexual Friar Tuck. Could’ve done with a more concrete ending though.
Willows by Scott Tracey - DNF
The Girl With the Blue Lantern by Tess Sharpe - 3/5 - A sweet little story about wlw and fairies during the California Gold Rush.
The Secret Life of a Teenage Boy by Alex Sanchez - 2/5 - Cute but a bit too farfetched for my tastes. The banter was the best part.
Walking After Midnight by Kody Keplinger - 5/5 - So sweet! An asexual Hollywood starlet falling for a small-town waitress. Absolutely loved it - I really need to read Kody’s novels soon.
The End of the World As We Know It by Sara Farizan - 5/5 - Adorable!
Three Witches by Tessa Gratton - DNF
The Inferno and the Butterfly by Shaun David Hutchinson - 4/5 - Like The Prestige but gay and actually magical. I need to read Shaun’s books too.
Healing Rosa by Tehlor Kay Mejia - 1/5 - I just didn’t connect with this one. It felt too similar to the first story.

Ringmaster’s Waltz: Prologue - The Heart
                                                    ~~~0~~~
Tumblr media
What makes a heart?
It’s what classifies the living from the dead.
It is the definition of having a soul.
A chuckle left my mouth as I left the band room, hair now twice the size it had been this morning since I just took it out from the braid that was keeping it out of my face at the competition.
“Mina, you ready to go?” my shorter sister asked with Sam standing to her left as I stood by the door.
“Not yet, Kerstin,” I replied, watching as the other kids basically flowed out of the room after putting their uniforms back on the racks, “we still have to wait for Chloe.”
After waiting for a few more minutes the shorter Filipino female emerged from the room into the dimly lit hallway of the high school.
“Hoot!” she chirped and immediately clung to my arm before we started walking out the gate, towards a familiar car.
“So Callum’s driving us?” I asked looking over at Kerstin as she opened the passenger door.
“Yep,” the said male through a window I didn’t notice was open, “Hey, Ramen.”
“Hi, Callum,” I smiled, “It’s good to see you again and thanks for taking us to do our little ‘ritual’ I guess.”
“No problem,” he chuckled pulling out of the parking space, “I got some stuff to burn too.”
The car was filled with light hearted chatter despite the late time and despite the location we were headed to.
“So, Ramen, what exactly is the history of this place?” Callum asked as they drove on an empty road in the woods.
“Alright, I’ve told Kerstin already but the story of this specific spot in the woods is that there’s a really old cabin that belonged to a witch who was known for cursing others in exchange for money,” I explained as the car stopped since we had to head on foot from where we were.
“So there lived a magic mercenary in these woods?” the male asked as I was handed a flashlight to lead the way.
“Yeah, but since they were curses there have been reports of high spiritual activity and if we do things right, we'll be able to use the lingering energy to get our own spell done without much consequence,” I replied just walking towards wherever I felt a pull, “But that all depends on if the spirits here let us. If it starts to feel iffy then we have to finish the ritual as quick as possible then book it.”
“Mina, you literally have a demon attached to you and you’re worrying about this?” Sam asked with a small smirk but I only looked forward with a straight face.
“I know my soul is fucked but I’m worrying because none of you have anything attached to you and I want to keep it that way,” I replied, coming upon a clearing with a worn down, wooden cabin in the middle of it, “We’re here.”
Within about ten minutes Kerstin had a fire going and Sam pulled a bottle of red wine from her bag.
“Fucking red wine? Really?” I groaned earning a look from the others.
“What’s so bad about red wine, Mina?” Chloe asked looking up at me.
“I hate the taste, I only really like sweet shit or straight whiskey when it comes to alcohol,” I sighed as Kerstin and Sam began pouring the wine into separate glasses, “Why couldn’t have been white wine at least?”
“Mina, stop being a baby bitch and drink the wine, you’re the High Priestess of this coven,” Sam snapped shoving a glass of the liquid in my face.
I reluctantly took a sip and gave a scowl once the bitter liquid hit my tongue before taking another sip to get used to the flavor.
I let out a small snort once I saw the look on Chloe’s face after she took a sip.
“Mina! This doesn’t taste good!” she cried as I chuckled.
“I know but it’ll help keep our energy up,” I said with a smile as the smoke rose to the moon.
After we all finished our single glasses of wine it was time to begin and we gathered around the fire with the items we wanted to burn.
“Goodbye, Trystan,” Kerstin said with no expression as she tossed in multiple photos of her ex-boyfriend.
“Goodbye, APUSH,” Sam said next as she dumped all of her homework from the past year into the flames.
“Goodbye, Transphobic cunts,” Callum said as he dumped in various papers and pictures containing some hate he got for being transgender.
“Goodbye, Archer,” Chloe said tossing in pictures of her ex-girlfriend as well as some of her possessions.
  “Goodbye, stress and hello, adventure,” I stated throwing in a bunch of papers from school as well as poems and scripts I wrote when I was in a state of depression.
As the night got later we just talked about a few things until Kerstin stood up and said, “I’m going to get some shit from the car.”
“Me too,” Sam said after dusting herself off.
“Hoot, I’ll come,” Chloe said standing as well.
“Ramen, you going to come?” Callum asked as he stood, taking the keys out of his jacket pocket.
I shook my head and just turned my head up to the sky before saying, “I have my things with me so I’ll just wait here.”
“Alright but if anything happens you better scream as loud as possible,” Callum said with a serious look on his face, worried about leaving me in the woods by myself.
“The car isn’t that far away,” I smiled, “I’ll be fine.”
“Alright,” he said going with the other three girls back to his car.
I must have fallen asleep because the next thing I remember is being woken up by multiple voices screaming, “Mina!”
My eyes snapped open and I sat up to see my friends looking past me with fearful expressions.
I turned to see a large shape that looked to be a tree with a noose hanging from it except it had glowing eyes in it’s trunk as well as a cracked mouth.
My eyes widened and I could feel my heart race.
I had a choice to make right now.
I wanted to live.
It was like the world slowed down as I struggled to stand, almost slipping on the dry leaves and twigs while trying to make my way towards my friends.
I could see their expressions change to that of horror but I couldn’t hear anything.
I felt a searing pain throughout my chest as I looked down to see that sharpened branches had ripped right through me.
I still couldn’t even utter a word as I was easily lifted and flung off the branches into the cabin as I heard three audible cracks.
I looked up wordlessly as the corners of my vision started to turn black.
My friends looked at my form but I was focused on the tree that seemed to be reaching for a glowing red object that was left in the place that I was just a few seconds prior.
What is that?
It is something that I thought I never had; however, it turns out my heart is just distorted… Distorted but it’s still there.
“Welcome, Ringmaster!” two cheery voices chirped as my eyes snapped open and I jumped up from an unfamiliar bed.
I looked around me to see I was in a red tent of some sort, sitting in a large canopy bed with maroon sheets.
The last thing I looked at was a set of twins who wore matching victorian styled dresses and had matching blonde pigtails, the only difference was the one on the left wore white while the one on the right wore black.
“Who are you?” I hissed feeling my ears point back, “Where am I?”
“You seem to be pretty tense, Ringmaster,” the one in white giggled.
“Well, her heart was just ripped from her, Tanya,” the one in black giggled.
“At least she’s here now, Tiri!” chirped the girl in white.
“Cut the crap!” I spat feeling something whip around behind me, “What the fuck is going on?!”
“Well, Ringmaster, why don’t you take a look for yourself?” the one in white asked gesturing at a mirror I don’t think was there before.
My eyes widened as I caught my own appearance in the glass. I was wearing a red tailcoat with a red, heart-shaped crystal on my chest accompanied by white gloves, black leggings, and black combat boots with a black top hat on my head that had a black ribbon on it as well as holes for my black fox ea- Wait what the fuck?! I have a pair of black fox ears on my head?!
As I watched them twitch and move at my command I felt something touching something behind me.
“Wow, your fur is so soft, Ringmaster!”chirped one of the twins as I turned to see her stroking one of my nine, black, fox tails.
“Okay, tell me what is going on right now.”
“Well, Ringmaster, I’m Tanya!” chirped the one in white.
“And I’m Tiri!” chirped the one in black.
“And we’re in your heart!” they finished together.
“What-”
“It’s not a normal one but that’s what makes you special,” Tanya said with a large grin.
“Now, Ringmaster, it’s time to wake up and help your friends,” she continued pushing me towards the exit of the tent.
“Yep, and eat that cursed heart!” Tiri added pushing me out of the flap causing me to fall.
I closed my eyes and braced for impact but what I wasn’t expecting was to land on Callum, causing both of us to tumble to the ground.
“Mina!” the three girls above us called in surprise.
“What the fuck is happening?!” I asked standing up, realizing I was still in my fox, carnival form.
“You tell me!” Callum replied, “We just saw you get impaled and thrown halfway across the clearing by a demon tree and I was one hundred percent sure that glowing thing it ate was your soul!”
“What?”
“Yeah, but just before you appeared above Callum, it flew out of the tree’s mouth and poof!” Chloe explained still shaking in fright, “Mina’s here now!”
“So where’s the tre-!”
My question was answered as a branch wound itself around my waist and I was thrown into a few trees, breaking them.
“Fuck that hurt!” I screeched standing back up before smirking, “But I’m still alive. So Tanya and Tiri weren’t a dream then.”
My eyes narrowed and I felt my ears flatten against my head as I snarled at the tree.
“Let’s go mother fucker.”
As it sent more branches at me, my tails knocked them all out of the way before I stomped my right foot down causing ice to rapidly race towards and encase the tree.
Before it could even think of breaking out I raced towards it and forced my fist through it, causing all of it to shatter, leaving behind a black glowing object.
When I picked it up I realized it was a faceted heart gem and instinctively put it in my mouth before swallowing.
“Mina, that was fucking disgusting,” Sam commented, being the first to break out of her shock.
“Is that all you really have to say right now?” I asked with a raised brow before we all burst out into laughter.
So…
What makes a heart?
Saz Lafontelle
“The necromancer that loves to learn new ways to explore the limits of life and death.”
Tumblr media Tumblr media
This character is also in F-List, this is his page (NSFW).
Zodiac Sign: Cancer
Fav. Food: Angel hair with mushroom dressing
Fav. Drink: Black coffee
Fav. Flower: Dark purple orchid
LI: Valdemar
BFFs: Perfice (OC), Feibbis (OC), Volta, Julian, Nadia.
Yes, he’s highly inspired by me lol
I’m actually genderfluid, I would say while Saoirse is inspired by my feminine side, Saz is my masculine side. I’ve already created a lot of stories about him, most of them I just adapt for him to fit in the lore he is in. This one is based on the story where he is a member of the Lafontelle family.
Saz has a huge crush on Valdemar and has a really hard time trying to hide his desire for them, he often feels anxious around them and had been wanting to ask them out since he got to the palace. Sometimes he just wanted them to tie him on the tables and play with him as they please.
Family and childhood
Saz was born in the Fitzgerald family, twin brother of Saoirse Fitzgerald, son of Maeve and Aiden Fitzgerald, two important members of the family.
The Fitzgerald family was part of the Alumina clan, a coven of witches blessed on their crown chackras by light spirits, granting powers of clarevoyance and really strong connections with the spiritual realm. The more power they have in their crown chackra, silver white locks start to appear on their hair.
The Fitzgeralds were really conservative and stern, one of the most traditional families of the clan, they had a name to preserve.
Saz already knew he was transgender since his early teens, and was really curious about the dark magic his family condemned so much.
Saoirse was really worried and, instead of asking “her sister” about what whas happening, she told their mother about how strangely “she” was acting.
Their parents then searched on his room and found not only his journals and male clothes, but also books of dark magic. He was 13 by that time.
As a punishment, his father took his powers away and obligated him to relearn magic from the beginning, along with rigid and cruel rules, such as forbidding him from leaving the house and obligating him to use certain clothes chosen by his mother, who dressed him every morning.
When he completed 14 years old, and wasn’t allowed to celebrate his own birthday, as part of the punishment. Feeling abandoned, completely desperate, he ran away from home that night. He regretted it by the morning, but it was too late to go back.
The family temple was hidden by a glamour, that could only be taken down by a spell he couldn’t cast anymore. He was lost in the city, homeless and lonely.
 Perfice and the Lafontelles
By the time Saz was homeless, Perfice was visiting his city, searchging for special magical grapes to make wine. They crossed paths a couple of times, until she got curious and decided to try and talk to him.
It was long since Perfice last had a deal with a human and ate a soul. In the beginning of their relationship, it was all just a game for her. She promised giving him everything he wanted until he turned 21, and his soul would be hers. It was hard for him to accept, but his starving stomach and the idea of having his life back spoke louder.
She protected him, supported him, and taught him the magic simple humans are able to practice. It was nothing compared to the power he had with the blessing of the spirits, but it was good to cast magic again. She also supported him a lot about his gender questions and sexuality.
By the day he turned 21, Perfice was supposed to eat his soul. But after practically raising a kid since his teens, protecting him as her own child, she developed a feeling of motherhood towards him, and he felt the same for her. She just couldn’t end that.
She wasn’t obligated to eat his soul, it was simply hers. She could do whatever she wanted with it. So, instead, she bound his soul to her magical core, granting him immortality from aging, and adopted him as her son.
 A new life
Being now a new member of the Lafontelles, Saz couldn’t even remember his old family anymore. All he could think of were his new opportunities of knowledge and power to become the sorcerer he always wanted to be, and enjoyed his new family who loved him.
Now he had the right to use the family ring and necklace, that granted him some of Perfice’s powers. And being close to Perfice, and studying the occult arts, he couls now join The Antumbra.
The Antumbra is the fraternity that Perfice, Feibbis and other members of the family participated. It was a group that welcomed “any creature that wanders in the darkness”, with the intention of sharing knowledge, power and connections.
Saz was a natural. He passed the tests to enter the fraternity with barely no effort and started making really good friends and learning new things.
It was by that time he officially chose the name “Saz” for his social name. His first guide and teacher in the fraternity, Liara, gave him this nickname. In her hometown’s old dialect, “Saz” was the word for “gracious”.
 The need for something more
In The Antumbra, after reaching the first level, the member must choose a path and an interest area, and look for a new teacher to guide them until the second and third levels. The teacher can be from outside the fraternity.
By the time, he was reading necromancy and medicine books, out of curiosity and thirst for knowledge. He wondered if necromancy could be used along with science to improve medicine and save lives.
When he had the idea to start studying medicine, he started having this weird dreams.
It was only him. Alone in the woods, sometimes in the shore, sometimes in the middle of city. Naked. Skyclad, actually. Submerged in an endless night. It was only him and his only company was the moon. No… Moons. There were two of them. Two gigantic bright red moons on the night sky.
And to understand why that was happening, we need to go back a few years, when he was 19, back in the day when his deal with Perfice was still going on.
After thinking a lot about it, he finally decided he wanted to take his breasts off. from a long long time, Perfice was friends with Valdemar. She then asked them for help, and they offered themselves to perform the mastectomy.
As soon as Saz arrived the dungeons and met eyes with Valdemar, he was already blushing and didn’t know where to put his face. There was something in their intimidating tall body and sadistic look that was… Alluring?
When he started having those dreams, he finally decided he wanted to study necromancy and biology. Perfice thought it would be a good idea to ask Valdemar to take him as their apprentice, since they already knew each other and the doctor was so strongly connected to death.
Of course Valdemar noticed Saz had a crush on them, it was actually kind of obvious. And they didn’t really care in the beginning, they were very professional and serious about the lessons. But after knowing him better, they couldn’t help but feel attracted too, Saz deserved his name.
He was not only gracious and studious, but he was also different from the other doctors when witnessing Valdemar’s cruel and macabre methods. He was curious, thirsty for knowledge, always taking notes and making interesting questions. He kind of reminded Valdemar from the days they were still human, discovering the mysteries of death and life.
 Pounding hearts
Saz was in the middle of his second level when he finally performed his first successful surgery and necromancy spell, he also found out he had a really strong power to bring people back to life from the edge of death. To celebrate, Valdemar decided to give him a tour in The Death’s Realm, which was still in their power by the time.
It was like Hades showing his realm to Persephone. Saz was completely faccinated, from the macabre things to the fantastic ones. He was curious like a child, asking about everything he saw. Valdemar could feel an involuntary grin forming on his face, he was almost cute to watch.
At some point, they reached a dark grove replete of insects glowing in the dark. The pink-ish lights reflecting on Saz’s skin was too beautiful to ignore. Valdemar finally approached him, observing each graciously shy movement the necromancer made, until having him facing backwards a huge tree, his only option to look them in the eyes.
He then could understand. The dreams he had, those weren’t moons. They were Valdemar’s eyes.
The doctor pulled his mask down, their both seductive and intimidating semblance sending chills down his spine and creating butterflies in his stomach. When they closed the distance between their lips, Saz couldn’t do anything but melt into their touch.
 The rest of the story will be told in posterior posts ;)
Meet me, Elliot
Sup! I’m Elliot and I currently identify as a pansexual and transgender male. I’m still sort of figuring it out, But I do know for sure that I do not identify with my assigned gender. I began realizing this when I no longer felt comfortable in dresses, feminine clothing, looking at myself in the mirror, etc. I also started to realize something was off when I imagined myself being a boy more than a “normal girl” should. At first I thought I was nonbinary. Next genderfluid. But none of them clicked. I feel so much more comfortable being called by he/him pronouns by my boyfriend and some friends. But I’m still not 100% sure.
  Now, how did I figure out I am Pan? Well, it started with bisexulity. I had a crush on this girl for a while. We started dating and such (we broke up like a month later because she is mentally abusive) , but then I realized, “hey, i wouldn’t mind dating someone nonbinary either. Or a guy.” Then I found pansexual and it fit me perfectly. I’ve recently found out that I’m rarely attracted to girls (prctically only Gal Gadot) and yeah thats kinda it. Im sort of out to my school. Most people can sort of just tell but I’m not worried about my sexuality.
Now, witch. I’m not an evil witch who eats lizard tails alright? I just have a major obsession with salt, crystals, the moon, nature, incense, and plants.
So yeah thats my introduction. I kind of got inspired to make this blog off the book “Symptoms of Being Human.” It is an amazing book about a genderfluid teenager who has to go through the struggle of switching schools because of her senator-dad running for re-election. She is called many offensive words at this school, and she creates a blog to escape. Someone finds her blog, discovers it’s a person form their school, and threatens to out her. There is also some romance going on in there. It does a perfect job displaying the struggles of a transgender teen. It also depicts the struggles of depression and anciety perfectly. Throughout the book, I find myself asking, “is this a true story?” At one point I even started crying because of the accuracy. 11/10 reccomend. It is so inspirational!
A Brief List of Interactive Love Stories
Looking for some new stories to experience?
That’s right, I said experience. Because these are interactive. Say whaaaaat.
Titles are links to the stories and their websites.
Happy Valentine’s Day!
[All images are pictures of the titles, except for With Those We Love Alive, which is a screencap from one of the first screens of the game.]
Tumblr media
Digital: A Love Story
“A computer mystery/romance set five minutes into the future of 1988.”
If you like ancient operating systems, government conspiracies, typing in phone numbers, and online dating, this game is for you. It’s a bit of a slog in terms of testing out phone numbers to see if they’ll let you connect (maybe that’s just me being a little impatient), but the overall story is great.
You just moved and got a new computer. You meet a lovely person named Emily on a poetry forum and start an e-mail correspondence. But something sinister seems to be afoot. It’s a free download, too!
Tumblr media
With Those We Love Alive
“I’m often frustrated by the flat, immortal, smooth sleekness of the digital. I wanted to have another dimension. I wanted to feel something.”
-Porpentine, creator
This just might be one of my favorite weird things ever. There is so much I can say about this one, but doing so would give away a lot of the amazing things you’ll discover while playing, so I’ll keep it vague.
The premise: you are a person in a violent, brutal fantasy world chosen to be the personal inventor for the monstrous Empress (and I mean monstrous in a very literal sense). You must create trophies for her while navigating the strange world of her empire.
Things it has: blatant and overt transgender themes and trans characters (God bless), a system that has you draw sigils on your body based on the events of the story (there’s a website where everyone posts their sigils, it’s very cool), beautiful abstract writing that totally nails the atmosphere, a great love story about the dangers of loving in a brutal world, and atmospheric music that turns creepy at just the right points.
10/10 would recommend.
[“Content warning for violence, self harm, blood, abuse, unreality.”]
Tumblr media
Creatures Such As We
“Creatures allows you to play as a moon-based tour director, who passes the time between duties by playing video games. The designers of your favorite game arrive as a tour group, and you get to not only discuss the disappointing ending, but the larger implications of video games as art as well.”
This is a longer one. It’s free to play if you wait a little bit between narrative arcs, or you can buy it for like $5.
It’s philosophical in all the right places, goofy in others, a surprising amount of good tension, and has a bunch of well-developed romance plots. Also, the character creation is amazing: you can be any nationality, any race, any gender identity. This story discusses the nature of consent in dating simulators and romance games, the nature of death and its ability to be conquered, and the implications of video games as art. Fun, beautiful, and educational - it’s got everything!
The story has some surprising twists and turns, and the choice aspect integrates wonderfully into the narrative. I really liked playing this one and I’m tempted to go back and do a bunch of different play throughs.
Tumblr media
Recipe For Love
“C.H.E.T is in need of a human to decode what love consists of. Help him, will you? It will look good on your profile.”
Exactly what it says on the tin: help a robot find the recipe for love. It’s cute, quirky, snarky, and the end results are pretty great (and come with adorable art pieces). Shouldn’t take more than 15mins.
Tumblr media
A Witch’s Word
“You sold your firstborn child to a witch years ago to save your mother from a deadly disease. Since then, you’ve been less than successful in the dating world. If you don’t find a mate soon, the witch will never get her part of the bargain.”
There’s a nice twist near the end of this story that is just so surprisingly heartwarming, I love it. You have three options, three different people to try to date, each with a wildly different personality. It’ll give you the warm-and-fuzzies, guaranteed.
Tumblr media
Queers in Love at the End of the World
“When we have each other we have everything.”
Probably one of the most minimalist ones out there. The world is ending and you have ten seconds to spend with the person you love - what do you do? What would happen if you chose to spend your ten seconds differently? It’s kind of amazing how much this “short” game accomplishes in just ten repeatable seconds of game play.
LGBTQ+ Book List
I work in a library, and I’m pretty good at finding LGBT+ books. My boyfriend @another-broken-heart-cafe , who works with me, has also found quite a few. I finally decided to make an organized list of those and any others I could think of for anyone who’s looking for these kinds of books. I’ve sorted them the best I can and separated them to make what you want as easy to find as possible. There is an adult category, a teen/YA category, and a child category. I’ve read a few of these, but not many, so there’s probably going to be mistakes. I looked up every individual book to organize them the best I could (which took a while because this list currently has 140 books, if I counted correctly). If you find a mistake, just let me know and I’ll fix it in the next update. I plan to make updates occasionally as I find more. Feel free to add on any LGBT+ books you want!
Every now and then you pick up an author’s work and immediately fall in love. That’s how I felt after I finished The Weight of Feathers by Mexican-American author Anna-Marie McLemore. McLemore’s gorgeous prose and magical realism sucked me in back in 2015, and I’ve looked forward to and enjoyed every subsequent novel she has produced. (I’m super excited for Blanca & Roja this fall!)
When we decided to do YA author spotlights for Women’s History Month, McLemore was one of the very first authors I thought of highlighting. If you haven’t already picked up one of her books, you should, especially if you’re looking for a good entry point into magical realism. McLemore’s books frequently grapple with identity (including LGBTQ themes), love, generational trauma, and family. It’s easy to lose yourself in one of her books, and be prepared to have tissues on hand because you might find yourself needing them sometimes.
The Weight of Feathers || My review
For twenty years, the Palomas and the Corbeaus have been rivals and enemies, locked in an escalating feud for over a generation. Both families make their living as traveling performers in competing shows—the Palomas swimming in mermaid exhibitions, the Corbeaus, former tightrope walkers, performing in the tallest trees they can find.
Lace Paloma may be new to her family’s show, but she knows as well as anyone that the Corbeaus are pure magia negra, black magic from the devil himself. Simply touching one could mean death, and she’s been taught from birth to keep away. But when disaster strikes the small town where both families are performing, it’s a Corbeau boy, Cluck, who saves Lace’s life. And his touch immerses her in the world of the Corbeaus, where falling for him could turn his own family against him, and one misstep can be just as dangerous on the ground as it is in the trees.
When the Moon Was Ours || My review
When the Moon Was Ours follows two characters through a story that has multicultural elements and magical realism, but also has central LGBT themes—a transgender boy, the best friend he’s falling in love with, and both of them deciding how they want to define themselves.
To everyone who knows them, best friends Miel and Sam are as strange as they are inseparable. Roses grow out of Miel’s wrist, and rumors say that she spilled out of a water tower when she was five. Sam is known for the moons he paints and hangs in the trees, and for how little anyone knows about his life before he and his mother moved to town.
But as odd as everyone considers Miel and Sam, even they stay away from the Bonner girls, four beautiful sisters rumored to be witches. Now they want the roses that grow from Miel’s skin, convinced that their scent can make anyone fall in love. And they’re willing to use every secret Miel has fought to protect to make sure she gives them up.
Wild Beauty || My review
Love grows such strange things.
For nearly a century, the Nomeolvides women have tended the grounds of La Pradera, the lush estate gardens that enchant guests from around the world. They’ve also hidden a tragic legacy: if they fall in love too deeply, their lovers vanish. But then, after generations of vanishings, a strange boy appears in the gardens.
The boy is a mystery to Estrella, the Nomeolvides girl who finds him, and to her family, but he’s even more a mystery to himself; he knows nothing more about who he is or where he came from than his first name. As Estrella tries to help Fel piece together his unknown past, La Pradera leads them to secrets as dangerous as they are magical in this stunning exploration of love, loss, and family.
Blanca & Roja || Excerpt & summary from Bustle
Sister relationships are always complicated, but the one between the del Cisne girls goes far beyond standard sibling squabbling. Best friends and rivals, Blanca and Roja have been pitted against each other since birth by a curse that will force one of them to shed their human skin and live life as a swan. Like each set of sisters in their family before them, Blanca and Roja know they will be forced to play a dangerous game that will determine their fates, but when two of their childhood friends become unwilling participants, the girls must find a way to break the curse, or risk having each of their fates changed forever.
A Brief List of Interactive Love Stories
I’ve been doing some poking around the internet for my creative project, and some remembering from my Experimental Narratives class, and found a couple cool stories that I enjoyed. (All titles are links to the stories and their websites.)
Tumblr media
Digital: A Love Story
“A computer mystery/romance set five minutes into the future of 1988.”
If you like ancient operating systems, government conspiracies, typing in phone numbers, and online dating, this game is for you. It’s a bit of a slog in terms of testing out phone numbers to see if they’ll let you connect, but the overall story is great. You just moved, or something, and got a new computer, and you meet a lovely person named Emily on a poetry forum and start an e-mail correspondence. But, of course, something sinister seems to be afoot. It’s a free download and a good way to spend a few hours on a day off.
With Those We Love Alive
“I’m often frustrated by the flat, immortal, smooth sleekness of the digital. I wanted to have another dimension. I wanted to feel something.”
-Porpentine, creator
This just might be one of my favorite weird things ever. There is so much I could say about this one, but doing so would give away a lot of the amazing things you will discover, so I’ll keep it vague as heck. The premise: you are a person in a violent, brutal fantasy world chosen to be the personal inventor for the monstrous Empress (and I mean that literally) and must create trophies for her and navigate the strange world of her empire. Things it has: blatant and overt transgender themes and trans characters (God bless), a system that has you draw sigils on your body based on the events the character goes through (there’s a website where everyone posts their sigils, it’s cool as hell), beautiful abstract writing that totally nails the atmosphere, a great love story about the dangers of love in a brutal world, and atmospheric music that turns creepy at just the right points. 10/10 would recommend.
[“Content warning for violence, self harm, blood, abuse, unreality.”]
Creatures Such As We
“Creatures allows you to play as a moon-based tour director, who passes the time between duties by playing video games. The designers of your favorite game arrive as a tour group, and you get to not only discuss the disappointing ending, but the larger implications of video games as art as well.”
This is a longer one. It’s free to play if you wait a little bit between narrative arcs, or you can buy it for like 5 bucks. It’s philosophical in all the right places, goofy in others, and has some well-developed romance plots. Also, the character creation is amazing: you can be any nationality, any race, any gender identity. Some of the philosophy the characters discuss includes the nature of consent in dating simulators and romance games, the nature of death and its ability to be conquered, and the implications of video games as art. The story has some surprising twists and turns, and the choice aspect integrates wonderfully into the narrative.
Recipe For Love
“C.H.E.T is in need of a human to decode what love consists of. Help him, will you? It will look good on your profile.”
Exactly what it says on the tin: help a robot find the recipe for love. It’s cute, quirky, snarky, and the end results are pretty great (and come with little art pieces). A good way to spend like, 15 minutes.
A Witch’s Word
“You sold your firstborn child to a witch years ago to save your mother from a deadly disease. Since then, you’ve been less than successful in the dating world. If you don’t find a mate soon, the witch will never get her part of the bargain.”
There’s a nice twist near the end of this story that is just so surprisingly heartwarming, I love it. You have three options, three different people to try to date, each with a wildly different personality. It’s definitely feels a little more “standard dating sim” than the others, but I’d give it a look-see.
Queers in Love at the End of the World
“When we have each other we have everything.”
Probably one of the most minimalist ones out there. The world is ending and you have ten seconds to spend with the person you love - what do you do? What would happen if you chose to spend your ten seconds differently? It’s kind of amazing how much this “short” game accomplishes in just ten (repeatable) seconds of game play.
Oh my god please tell us about the story ideas you have I would love to hear some :D
okay!! I’ll explain the premises that way if I decide to write them i won’t spoil them
(b>First story: (currently untitled bc im dumb)This is the real crime one. A team of new York detectives is assembled, all out some of the most talented young minds in the country. Among them is 20 year old Dahlia Rose. One day, a new person arrives on the team: 22 year old Heather Wood. She’s a little mysterious, a little serious, but extremely kind and insanely smart. Dahlia and Heather immediately become great friends, earning a nickname from their superior “Rosewood”. Dahlia has a boyfriend. She never talks about him except that “he’s sweet when you really get to know him”. Sometimes Dahlia come into work with bruises. She never says anything but Heather knows. The team takes Dahlia out for her 21st birthday, Heather drives her home. But she stays outside in the car because something doesn’t feel right, and she sees Dahlia’s boyfriend hitting her. Heather barges in and hits him over the head before he gets the chance to hurt Dahl. Okay so i’ll stop right there to avoid spoilers but just know that Heather has a dark backstory and this story does not end how you think it does. I explained it all to @eatacactusass a long time ago lol.
Second story: KingThis one i’ve been obsessed with lately (it’s the medieval fantasy one) In this kingdom, there lived a royal family- the Eutheara family. The king, the queen, and twin prince and princess. When the children were only ten, they were traveling by carriage through the mountains. A boulder struck the carriage, crushing the family and knocking over torches, setting it aflame. Only one survived: the young daughter, Esmya (ehz-mee-yuh). Tradition told that one eligible for the throne was the next male heir, yet neither the king nor the prince lived. Instead of giving the throne to the living brother of the king, a war-mongering man, the royal advisors made a decision. They told the kingdom that the prince, not the princess, had survived. They showed the last Euthaera to the kingdom not as Esmya, but as prince Alean, and trained her to live as a man and one day become king. Flash forward 12 years. No one knows of Esmya’s true identity except for a board of royal advisors and a single, loyal servant (Sindel) who found out on her own. However there’s an issue. By tradition, the king rules for 5 years before marrying a neighboring kingdom’s princess therefore continuing the bridge of peace throughout. The idea of Esmya being forced to reveal herself to someone is threatening to the board, but to keep face, Esmya must continue with the tradition. Luckily, she knows of someone. Her name is Myrine (mee-er-reen), and she is the daughter of a fellow king and the childhood friend of Esmya. She hasn’t seen Myrine since her family was killed, but marrying marrying a distant friend is better than marrying a stranger and risking her secret being exposed. When Myrine arrives in the kingdom, she is cold and distant to Esmya, whom she believes still to be Alean. Myrine reveals that Alean, the real Alean, was terrible to her in childhood, that he would pick fights and spit at her. But finding Esmya so calming and gentle, she realizes that she is not Alean. She agrees to marry her and keep her secret safe, all while falling in love with her. There’s more to it and this other character i think i’ll name Aeson or smth and he’s a transgender fantasy-equivalent to a witch but like, badass. Anyways i have this whole arc for it and i hope i get around to writing it.
Third story: (probably) The Legend of the TidesThis one is fantasy too, greek myth esqu not medieval. Princess of island (think like the island from mama mia lol) named Adamaris loves the stars and moon and shit. Is gonna be forced to marry when she comes of age so she cries and prays to the moon. Next day a strange woman appears by the name of Channary. She is beautiful and mysterious and okay she’s the fucking moon alright. I haven’t fleshed it out but in the end they run away stardust style and Channary turns back into the moon but Adamaris turns into the ocean and that’s why the moon controls the tides.
Sorry for how long this post is i’m gay
(I'm not sure if this is the type of question you usually get asked, sorry if it's not relevant!) My sister (who I'm very close with ❤️) just came out to me as (mtf) trans. I want to get her some awesome books for Christmas with transwomen characters because recently we were talking about how horrible the LGBTQ+ representation is in the books we've been reading. Do you have any suggestions for books with mtf trans characters, or can you steer me towards some authors? She likes sci fi/fantasy
These are a few books I found:
Fifth season by N. K. Jemisin - sci-fi fantasy with trans woman character,  Tonkee, that is a little in the background. There are also other queer people.
Margins and Murmurations by Otter Lieffe -   dystopian fiction.  The main character is Ash, “a trans woman and healer living in a corner of Europe controlled by a militarized state.” Ash and her BFF have escaped to the forest along with other trans folks, queers, and sex workers.
If I Was Your Girl by Meredith Russo - not a sci-fi or fantasy, but It’s about trans woman growing up.
Full Fathom Five by Max Gladstone - an urban fantasy set in a Hawaii inspired setting (it’s a completely different world). The main character is a trans woman.
Chameleon Moon by RoAnna Sylver - a dystopian urban fantasy novel with a trans woman as a protagonist.
Meanwhile, Elsewhere: Science Fiction and Fantasy from Transgender Writers by Cat Fitzpatrick
The Way of Thorn and Thunder, by Daniel Heath Justice -  The whole story is an allegory to colonization in the Americas, but it’s also an action-packed story that totally works on its own. It features, among others, Tarsa, a bisexual former warrior whose destiny to be a Wielder—a kind of healer/priestess/witch — and Denarra, a feisty trans woman traveler full of hilarious tall tales, getting shit done “by any means necessary.” If you’ve wondered what LOTR would be like if it were queer, trans, feminist, poly, and decolonizing, look no further.
“Thrall” by Barbara Ann Wright.
I also found a few sci-fi\fantasy writers that are trans women:
Dane Figueroa Edidi - trans women of color and a sci-fi fantasy writer.
Jan Morris
R.J. Eliason
Storm Constanine - not a trans writer, but has a lot of books with queer characters
-mod Fiora
