Most Anticipated Queer Young Adult Fiction: January-June 2024
Just Happy to Be Here by Naomi Kanakia (January 2nd) Tara just wants to be treated like any other girl at Ainsley Academy. That is, judged on her merits—not on her transness. But there’s no road map for being the first trans girl at an all-girls school. And when she tries to join the Sibyls, an old-fashioned Ainsley sisterhood complete with code names and special privileges, she’s thrust into the…

May Booooks! Another absurd month in which there are way too many good books coming out! I'm really excited for a lot of these though Dragonfall and The Scandalous Letters of V and J might be the ones I'm most excited about. I've read a bit of V and J and it is such a good use of the formate and I'm always here for a well done queer historical fiction. I've heard amazing things about Yellowface soooo I'm stoked to read it (also the only book on the list that I don't think has queer rep, but I could be wrong). Oh also in the UK Bitterthorn is coming out, but I can't find a US release date so I'll just. wait for it (if anyone knows a way to get it in the US let me know). Oh and assaians, vampires, multiple dragons, magic and romance. Yeah it looks like a good month.
Any books that you are really excited about that I might have missed?
Dragonfall by L.R. Lam (2nd)
To Shape Dragon's Breath by Moniquill Blackgoose (9th)
Girls Like Girls by Hayley Kiyoko (May 30th)
Yellowface by R. F. Kuang (16th)
Transmogrify!: 14 Fantastical Tales of Trans Magic Edited by Haron Davis (16th)
The Scandalous Letters of V and J by Felicia Davin (16th)
Lesbian Love Story: A Memoir in Archives by Amelia Possanza (May 30th)
Witch King by Martha Wells (30th)
Venom & Vow by Anna-marie Mclemore and Elliott McLemore (16th)
A Long Time Dead by Samara Breger (May 16th)

Self-Made Boys: A Great Gatsby Remix by Anna-Marie McLemore
goodreads
Tumblr media
New York City, 1922. Nicolás Caraveo, a 17-year-old transgender boy from Minnesota, has no interest in the city’s glamor. Going to New York is all about establishing himself as a young professional, which could set up his future—and his life as a man—and benefit his family. Nick rents a small house in West Egg from his 18-year-old cousin, Daisy Fabrega, who lives in fashionable East Egg near her wealthy fiancé, Tom—and Nick is shocked to find that his cousin now goes by Daisy Fay, has erased all signs of her Latina heritage, and now passes seamlessly as white. Nick’s neighbor in West Egg is a mysterious young man named Jay Gatsby, whose castle-like mansion is the stage for parties so extravagant that they both dazzle and terrify Nick. At one of these parties, Nick learns that the spectacle is all for the benefit of impressing a girl from Jay’s past—Daisy. And he learns something else: Jay is also transgender. As Nick is pulled deeper into the glittery culture of decadence, he spends more time with Jay, aiming to help his new friend reconnect with his lost love. But Nick's feelings grow more complicated when he finds himself falling hard for Jay's openness, idealism, and unfounded faith in the American Dream.
Mod opinion: I haven't read this book yet and I probably won't since I rarely enjoy retellings. But I do like Anna-Marie McLemore's other work, so it might happen if I'm ever out of other books to read.

Quote
Being trans is rarely even the most interesting thing about a person. Representation of joyful trans characters can be life altering when all you see in the world around you are trans people facing countless horrors.
Over at Teen Vogue, I talk to some authors about writing stories where trans people get to have epic adventures and romances, and above all moments of trans joy.

So book rec time.

Did you like The Great Gatsby? This retelling is an warm, comforting update to the story about Nick, a transgender Mexican-American boy and his experiences joining his cousin Daisy in high society.
Featuring:
- historical setting but a sort of cultural update
- the exploration of a trans man finding love for another trans man.
- lesbian representation
- the love of the original novel is there in the detail.
Definitely worth a read.

I just finished reading Self Made Boys by Anna-Marie McLemore and I want to sob. It was so fucking good.
This is regrettably the first book I’ve ever read with a trans main character. I think just because I have been in denial about my own identity it’s been difficult to read about other trans people, but I’m so glad that this was my introduction into trans literature. I’ve always loved the Great Gatsby but the way that McLemore used it to create such a beautiful story about love and struggling to find your place in society was just beyond words.
10/10 would recommend.

Top 5 fairy tale retellings
Hello friends!! Welcome to Top 5 Tuesday!! This week’s topic is top 5 fairy tale retellings!! Now, I know this topic is not for everyone. In fact, it’s pretty much designed purely for me. But, as host, that’s my prerogative every so often. And, I’m not sorry. Sorry. But, for not being sorry. Not for the topic. I’ll stop now. Apparently, somewhere in the world 26 February is National Fairy Tale…

It is finally September which means hopefully cooler weather, fun fall clothing (sweaters my love), seasonal adventures aaaand of course NEW BOOKS! Admittedly the fact that we are finally getting Nona has me just.... vibrating out of my skin. Like no joke I'm barely keeping it together. Buuuuut there are a handful of other books that I'm pretty stoked about. As always, this list doesn't include sequels (I have a different set of lists for those), but without further ado, some of the books I am most excited about coming out this month!
The Sunbearer Trails by Aiden Thomas
The Genesis of Misery by Neon Yang
Self-Made Boys by Anna-Marie McLemore
Notorious Sorcerer by Davinia Evans
