Quote
Being trans is rarely even the most interesting thing about a person. Representation of joyful trans characters can be life altering when all you see in the world around you are trans people facing countless horrors.
Over at Teen Vogue, I talk to some authors about writing stories where trans people get to have epic adventures and romances, and above all moments of trans joy.

Book Review: "Witchlings" by Claribel A. Ortega
What happens if you're a witch that doesn't end up in a coven? Learn more about it in my book review of "Witchlings" by Claribel A. Ortega! #bookreview #Witchlings #ClaribelAOrtega #reading, #amreading
Cover of “Witchlings” by Claribel A. Ortega I’m back with another book review, and this time I’m reviewing “Witchlings” by Claribel A. Ortega! I’ve read witch-related books before, but it’s been a while and I thought it would be fun to read and review another one. “Every year, in the magical town of Ravenskill, Witchlings who participate in the Black Moon Ceremony are placed into covens and come…

4 out of 5 stars
This is a great graphic novel that shows the emotions that pre-teens go through and the pressure they face from their peers and their family to look a certain way. I was glad to see that it pointed out some of the hypocrisy that adults give when they are trying to tell kids that "what's on the inside that counts" but often comment on the child's looks.
I'm glad that Marlene had some support in the form of her best friend and her aunt, who helped her manage to put words to her feelings and help express them to Marlene's mom.
Highly recommend this to any pre-teen girl who may be worried about what they look like.

Best Books Read in April 2023
A recap of the best books I read each month in 2023.
The Golem and the Jinni by Helene Wecker
I generally prefer my fantasy to be more fantastical, but this leaned more into the historical fiction aspect and I was still so invested. Wecker challenges readers to think and asks really interesting questions. It is pretty slow paced for the majority of the story and follows quite a few characters and timelines.
Spinning Silver by Naomi Novik
I didn't know how much I wanted a Rumplestilskin retelling until I read this but wow, did this live up to the hype. I enjoyed the way Novik engaged with the antisemitism of the fairy tale. I am excited to read more of her work!
Honorable Mention
Frizzy by Claribel A. Ortega
Middle grade graphic novel that was sweet and heartfelt.
