But not only the Shaman discovered the control of psychoactive plants. Also the control over pristine nature and uncivilised customs, where he put him in a confrontation to dominate the animals and make them his subjects. He learned the qualities of free-range fruits and vegetables as well as their generosity.

Classical depictions of shamans included gatherings of animals such as moose, wolves, snakes and aurochs. Such graphic gatherings were made possible by the ability to discover pigments. So in the caves we see natural enemies in peaceful communion with each other. This ability may have made the Shaman a protector and provider among the early rural tribes and hunter-gatherers.

Similarly, early cults developed to fertility or to the process of life and death. In early societies the natural world was the origin of all life. Under this scheme, "god" is nature and would also have served as the "god" of death, creation and destruction are celebrations that begin to be identified with natural phenomena.

Hominisation is a non-antagonistic relationship, requiring dialectics, for there to be a link between nature and culture. This anthropo-cultural evolution is linked to bionatural evolution. So the -first culture- emerges from a natural process and at the same time it acts and intervenes on this natural process, we were a "primordial culture" in harmony with the environment.

But the beasts in the wild places showed the Shaman that the Astado was a weapon and a symbol of hierarchy. It became a mediator between man and nature, able to tame predators and prey so that they could gather at the campfire and lie down together.

Michael Reeves - The Sorcerers (1967) Michael Reeves directed three films before dying at the age of 25 of an accidental overdose. This means that this film, his second one, was directed when he was something like 22-23 years old, and it's an astounding piece of direction. A Tigon films production it presents a younger, fresher horror than that made by their competitors at Hammer. More famous for his last film, Witchfinder General, The Sorcerers deals with an old couple played with gusto by Boris Karloff, for the horror cred and Catherine Lacey, for the acting chops, who develop a hypnotic technique which can make them control a subject at a distance and feel what the subject is feeling. The premise is ridiculous, but this film is so well directed and acted, particularly by the genuinely scary Lacey, who turns from an adorable old woman to a murdering thrill-seeker as soon as she gets a taste of action with no consequence, that the film is more than worth watching. The film is composed by a number of discreet sequences as the couple take over a young man to experience increasingly dangerous and exhilarating feelings. Each of these sequences, from swimming in a pool to driving fast on a bike to stealing a fur coat to outright murder, is directed with a great sense of pace and excitement by Reeves, inter-cutting the action with the old people controlling their puppet. This was a joy to watch and goes to show how a crappy story can be made good by the sheer skill of the people involved in the making of the film. We can only wonder what Reeves would have become had he not died so young.
