watched the first episode of desiquest tonight. the pure delight of watching an entirely south asian cast, in a south asian inspired world, telling a story of people that i can see so clearly in my mind's eye, it's incredible. truly the joy of representation. all the casual references, the incorporation of language, even the conversation style.
all of the characters hit immediately. ashwathama, as diaspora coming back to the homeland, with an anglicized nickname, technically competent but so bumbling anyway. every interaction murkha has is hilarious, especially with baccha. laddoo auntie has this lived-in quality, this fully formed sense of her life and how she's lived it. also everything rekha says is comedy gold. and sitara. the moment she disappeared into the teakettle? i audibly gasped. she has such good character hooks, and her interactions with laddoo auntie? perfection.
anyway i'm deeply enjoying this both as a fan of actual plays and just as a desi really feeling the joy of seeing an all-desi cast.

Propaganda
Enonami
Honestly they both have aesthetics that kind of match the others well so on a pure aesthetic level they definitely look great together. Beyond that though with how few hateships girls tend to get, I can absolutely see why people would gravitate to this one, especially as Junko very much specifically targeted Chiaki in a way she didn't do to Naegi. That along with Chiaki's steadfast if timid nature being a genuine roadblock to Junko, I can absolutely see some interesting dynamics here.
Komaegi
What isn't there to say about Komaegi? We all saw the way they interacted in that one scene of Danganronpa 3 "his hands were so soft" "why were his hands sticky" absolute comedy gold to have the hope obsessed with the embodiment of hope. Also they're luckster buddies, love to see some fucked up luck shenanigans. They work as great foils and everyone knows great foils are gay as hell. I think Makoto could fix Komaeda but Komaeda could also make Makoto worse and they should kiss over it.

I’m currently on SPN S9. You know what that means???? It means that I can finally start watching their interviews and conventions and comic cons and I AM. I really REALLY am. It’s insane how much of a family this fandom feels when they (J2M - hahahhahaha look at me knowing these terms and fully understanding and loving them lol I love this fandom sm sm) are just sitting on a stage and chatting with everyone. And it’s literally because of how they address the fans and it’s really unique because other shows’s cast members are rarely this invested in the characters they play.
Tumblr media
The best part is the realisation that Jared is literally a golden retriever ALL THE DAMN TIME and that Jensen is always just done with him 😭. His lil forehead slam into the microphone when Jared starts going off topic is the funniest thing EVER. That man is so tall and so hyperactive and so annoying on purpose and it’s amazing.
Tumblr media
The next best part is realising that Jensen. Can. Fucking. Sing. And not in a “acceptable” way but in a way that makes the Applebee’s jingle sound like a proper song sung by a man with a voice that makes your whole bussy quake. PLUS. He’s always essentially babysitting Jar and it’s so fucking adorable. Whenever they’re both on stage together the dynamic is literally golden retriever and a what-the-fuck-do-I-do-with-his-hyperactive-mess cat.
Tumblr media
Now. Misha. He is the dad that never even realised that he adopted two chaotic messes. Whenever he joins the stage he either just sits their judging the shit out of them and looking at the audience like “yes, this is what I have dealt with since the beginning… welcome to my pain”. OR. He and Jen become the super disappointed parents of JarPad as he runs around the stage destroying everything he can while being as distracting as possible.
Tumblr media
They’re all so fucking funny. I’m literally always, every single video, just laughing with tears in my eyes. The comedy. The puns. The dad jokes. The stories. The fan interactions. Everything is pure gold. At the same time, they’re so deep and caring of the people they talk to and the show they’re on. It’s just all very hugs-myself-because-they’re-not-around-to-hug-me.
The best part is how much they care about each other though. And obviously involved they are in each others life outside of the show. Sigh… Honestly…. I love this fandom.

A fun if somewhat tedious episode that introduces Johnny, Kitty and Shadow. The tedious aspect comes from Johnny trying to have Jazz become an anchor to earth so that Kitty can enter the human world when all he needs to do is have him wear some stuff. However, the real highlight of this episode was Jack and Maddie and their interactions with Danny. All of their scenes are pure comedy gold.

Let's talk about Loki! Under the cut for the sake of those who have not yet seen Episode 2.
OKay so to start with, overall this episode of Loki was a pleasant surprise. Loki himself got to be serious and powerful and I enjoyed that. He's finally had a chance to shine in his own series. The way he played with magic, especially with the shadows at the beginning, was absolutely stunning, and I'm glad we're finally diving into his magical abilities more. He had just the right amount of menace in his interactions with Brad, and the way he was softer and rather understanding when Mobius flipped out was a wonderful counterbalance. So far I'm liking this version of Loki where he's threatening to his opponents but genuinely caring towards his people, and I think whoever was in charge of writing him in this episode did an excellent job reinjecting some nuance and some authority into his character.
Mobius was a little weird at certain points; he's been an analyst for like a bajillion years or something so I think in-character he should've been able to handle reading the guidebook, but honestly he had a decent showing too. Using him as the levity...it's not a horrible decision if it's not going to become a recurring theme, because I don't want him to get dumbed-down, which he's not so far; his deducing that there was set-up was quite clever and I didn't see it coming. It worked in this episode partially because he was also doing some smart stuff, but also because it was offset by the bits of temper and vulnerability he displayed, which were both very well done in my opinion. It actually added another dimension to his character that I really like, and I think addressing that he's more afraid of "what if the life I was supposed to have is good?" than if it was bad is an interesting take, especially considering he seems to be in the camp of "it may be the life I was supposed to have, but it's not my life," because it's good for the show to be exploring those different avenues for the TVA workers, and because it makes Mobius a more unique person himself. I'm also kind of enjoying his little ruthless streak, ngl.
I like the dynamic Mobius and Loki have together right now. Them eating pie together and talking about Mobius's feelings was a lovely scene, and probably one of the most authentic we're going to see out of the entire season if I had to guess. They're working together very nicely; Mobius sort of letting Loki go off his leash with the magic at the beginning was neat, and I just adore the way their less-heroic tendencies are playing off of each other (such as in the Brad-in-the-box scene). I think that makes sense for them, and I'm not looking for these guys to be heroes of pristine reputation, or even heroes at all, just guys who are trying to hold what little they have left together, so it's really hitting the spot for what I expect of their personalities melding together.
(Also, I'm now pronouncing Casey and Ouroboros a ship, although I doubt I'm the first one. The idea of OB being a celebrity to this one guy, and only this one guy, is pure gold.)
I will say, there's still a little much of the MCU-brand hokeyness in the show for my taste. There doesn't need to be something to laugh at every couple of minutes (not that I'm really laughing, because I'm tired of that style of writing by this point). The story can stand on its own without the forced comedy, and if it can't, then the comedy is only going to annoy people further. This is kind of serious stuff, and although I'm not against having some lighter moments or some comedic relief, I could live with Loki actually taking itself more seriously. But, like I said, this episode did feel more genuine to me, so it's not all jokes and quipping.
I'm still not a fan of Sylvie. Her existence annoys me because the female-Loki premise is obnoxious, and she feels so much like every other female character out there she doesn't really have the personal qualities to redeem the premise. Also, I find Loki's obsession with her strange, as she's mostly only been a total bitch to him and clearly wants nothing to do with him. (Which in itself is weird; her acting all butthurt at him in this episode like he was the one who pushed her through a time-door or something was like...what the heck? If somebody can explain that to me, please do, because I feel like I've either missed or forgotten something that would make it make sense.) I find her "normal life" as an 80s McDonald's employee strange, also, because that's...that's not the kind of normal she would envision. Her "normal" should be something regular on Asgard, because she's not a human dreaming of a normal life, she's an Asgardian dreaming of a normal life, although I do understand that according to the rules of the game there's probably not an Asgard where a Loki is welcome...yet Lokis are shapeshifters, so she could sneak in one anyway. That's probably a little nitpicky, I can recognize that.
So, yeah. There we go. This episode of Loki actually raised my expectations for the rest of the season, which is a nice surprise for me. I didn't think I would enjoy any part of this show so much, because the first season really didn't have a moment like this where I went huh. this is pretty good. I hope this episode being so good isn't an anomaly, because I was a huge fan of Loki in Thor, Avengers, Dark World, Infinity War, and I want to be a fan of him again in this show. If the writing stays this good (or gets even better, perchance?) I may end up considering myself a convert.

hope that this is not too broad but what is an anime without a manga that you like? and what manga that doesn’t have an anime or anime planned would you like to have one?
Ohhh. Nice question you got there, anon. Very interesting!! 😲😲😲
For the first one, Buddy Daddies immediately came to mind. When I saw even just the poster, I already decided I'm gonna watch it. And I wasn't mistaken. It wasn't getting any attention at the beginning but a lot of people definitely got hooked. I think it's the hype too that there was no source to check and everyone couldn't do anything but to wait for the next episode. It's like in this fandom, everyone is equal and no spoilers at all, just pure guesses. 🤭🤭🤭 Another one would be Link Click (Shiguang Dailiren). This series literally drove me crazy. Like what??? That's it for the first season and no manhua to check? Now, I am definitely looking forward to the next season.
For the second question, there's actually a lot. But for now, I'm thinking of Youkai Gakkou no Sensei Hajimemashita! I am really fascinated by Youkai anime since they definitely represent a culture that can be very specific to Japan. The series itself, as a matter of fact features a lot of Japanese Youkai and some mythical beings that you will also often encounter on other Youkai anime. What makes this different from the others? It's the balance between gag, fantasy, school life and workplace theme. It emphasizes not only how the main protagonist interacts with his students but also with the other adults in his workplace. The comedy is solid gold. There's a lot of 4th wall-breaking and I would be very happy to see those scenes animated. The MC is a newbie teacher in a Youkai Academy. He comes off as a pathetic teacher who gets scared of his own students but there's more to his character. It gets better in every chapter and I am still hoping that this series will get animated since the manga itself is still ongoing.

If you're still doing the First Impressions Character ask then...
BILL WATKINS (if he hasn't been requested already)
*rubs hands together with glee*
Bill Watkins, my boy!
First impression- STG if that is Loid in disguise I'm gonna flip my desk.... (followed closely by: "AGE 6?! 6???)
Impression now- My sweet boy. A gentleman and Knight in the making. He is a gentle giant and I hope he becomes an Imperial Scholar. He deserves friendship and everlasting bonds of camaraderie.
Favorite moment- When we see Bill interact with his father. He is just a boy! A little boy who looks up to his father! A kid with dreams and goals and wants to impress his dad!
Idea for a story- I want one where Bill is a hero, a damsel, falling in love and having it requited! Give me a story where Anya or Becky prove themselves and save Bill or beat Bill in some sort of tournament! DODGEBALL REMATCH!! Maybe even an homage to that scene in Mulan where the big guy just picks up the angry guy to calm him down. Don't tell me this isn't Bill picking up a fuming Damian...
Tumblr media
LET HIM USE HIS STRENGTH AND SIZE IN COMEDIC WAYS!!
Unpopular opinion- Out of all the Eden boys, Bill is my favorite. (And if we're talking Aged Up characters- the better of any boyfriend material) Favorite relationship- Canon- Bill vs. Ceclie Hall. A regular low-stakes antagonist is always comedy gold.
Non-Canon?- Becky/ Bill. I wrote a one-shot (What if We Kissed in the Bomb Shelter) last summer and the ship had been taking on crew members ever since.
Favorite headcanon- Bill is short for William. This is purely due to Endo's tendency to name characters with same first and last initial.
Also: I totally think his mother is also a giant woman and can absolutely body-slam her husband. (Strong Women for the win!)

Oh my gosh that last post 😂 Can you imagine George showing up to marry Marina and Penelope while happy for her cousin is concerned about Colin (who must be so heartbroken!) and pushes him to go on his grand tour. Colin writing love letters to Penelope throughout who is oblivious but also Colin writing to Marina and George, who think this is comedy gold! “George come quick! Colin just got Penelope’s letter! Apparently she thinks he was reminiscing about the blue of the Grecian sea because it resembled the gown I wore the night we met!” “ I knew she would say that! You owe me two pounds!”
Penelope goes to comfort Colin after Marina's marriage and he's not complaining. He gets to rest his head against Penelope's soft bosom while she pets his hair. All her attention is on him for once.
Polin is basically Marina and George's favorite telenovela. Colin is more frequent with his letters but they desperately want more than what Penelope sends. (She's a little bit busier getting Whistledown business done.) But it just so happens George has a brother over at Cambridge University, who they may send some extra money to for train rides to and from London to get some behind the scenes info. Hey don't judge them! This kind of entertainment is pure gold!
Marina writes to Penelope that George's brother Phillip is thinking about doing a London season after he is done at University. (Phillip is absolutely not thinking about a London season. Marina don't lie to her!) But Phillip is not the best with interacting with people. Could she possibly help by showing him around and maybe making a few introductions while in the off season to get him comfortable?
Phillip and Penelope actually find they get along and enjoy each other's friendship. Marina and George will look at each other when they get that letter and wonder if they accidentally created a love triangle.
Meanwhile Colin continues to send love letter after love letter to Penelope. It doesn't matter if she doesn't see it now. He just wants to shower her in the love she deserves.
The real kicker happens when Colin comes home. They have their moment in the Bridgerton drawing room, but when Anthony tells everyone to get ready for the races Penelope says she will meet them there. Her new friend she met in the off season is coming to visit from Cambridge.
Marina and George know they hit a spicy chapter when both Colin and Phillip write to them that they met one another. Colin is seething while Phillip thinks he's nice.

I know Hercules is Hades main nephew but I remember Triton in the animated series and just wondering how he would interact with his other Nephew. And in the animated series there was also Otus another child of Poeisdon. So probably Poseiden has more kids in the show but Triton would be the most prominent. Just imagine Triton being forced to spend time with Uncle hades and it's just him swimming in the underworld and not knowing how to connect with his uncle who is distant and kind out for his cousin Hercules.
PFFT omg Hades interacting with his other nephews would be comedy gold 😂
I can only imagine Poseidon (out of pure desperation probably lmao) asking Hades to babysit his sons and Hades is just sitting there planning to rule the cosmos cause he already (supposedly) took out their little cousin unknowingly to them lol and all the while, Hades has no idea how to deal with kids so he just kinda lets them do their own thing while he works lmao
Triton: Uncle Hades, I’m bored.
Hades: Yeah, well that’s unfortunate, kiddo, but I’m busy. Go find something to do.
Triton: ….Can I go swim in your pool?
Hades: Yeah, yeah, sure. Whatever.
*5 minutes later*
Hades: Wait…did he ask to swim in my….WAIT! NO! NOT THE LETHE POOL!
But yeah, I don’t think Hades is close to any of his nephews since he isn’t all that close to his own brothers, so him being so focused on Hercules, he probably forgets that he literally has 2 other nephews lol!

Ted Kord
– Overall opinion of them
I ADORE Ted Kord. What a guy! His design is top tier, he's got so much depth, and he's an annoying little shit. And I feel like that's what makes him great! I love that most of his struggles are less "supervillain/rivalry/world ending mega-events" (though he is certainly involved in plenty of those!) and more mundane things. Like depression, or struggling with his weight, or having no money. He's got a chronic heart condition, he's constantly on the verge of a breakdown, and he's out here kicking ass anyway. He just...feels like an actual person more than a comic book character. And, I cannot stress this enough, he's fun. I would want to be his friend. I would want to hang out watching Star Trek with him. He's just a guy, doing his best. Glad he's alive and active in comics again! And glad he's still funny.
Tumblr media
– Gender/sexuality headcanons
Sexuality, 100% bi or pan! Ted's horny on main, constantly, in all directions. Like, he's a massive flirt in canon. But he's also very dedicated to anyone he's actually in a relationship. I think he probably has some struggles coming to terms with not being heterosexual, but grows more comfortable with it as time goes on.
As for gender, I am of the opinion that he certainly thinks of himself as a cis man. But I also think it's more something he hasn't put a lot of time into contemplating. I think Ted Kord’s relationship with gender is best summarized by the following comic:
Tumblr media
– Favorite moment in canon
There are a few times this happens, and it is one of my favorite reoccurring little plots:
Alien invades earth in big, spooky spaceship
Ted Kord gets in the vents/service tubes, aliens ignore him because there are bigger immediate threats
Ted Kord gets to engineering/power/controls
Ted Kord does what he does best (techno-bullshit)
Ship explodes/stalls/is otherwise incapacitated
And it's fucking great, every time!
Tumblr media
I also love this moment from Rebirth (which I enjoyed, even if my feelings are a bit mixed). I quote this to myself all the time, when I'm feeling stressed. I just love the moments when he reminds us why he's lasted so long in a very dangerous lifestyle. The brains and the moxxy!
Tumblr media
– Favorite moment in a fanwork
In the fantastic fan-fiction A Groovy Kind of Love by totilott, he has this fantastic breakdown in the rain following some very stressful time traveling (including the fact that he absolutely does not get along with a past version of him). It's visceral. I literally had to get up and walk away the first time I read it.
Really, that whole series is great, highly recommend. He goes through a lot, and it's so fun to enjoy the journey he's on.
– Favorite line, in canon or otherwise Hmm, everything out of his mouth is pure gold, but I guess I'll have to go with a classic:
"My name is Ted Kord. I am the second man to call himself the Blue Beetle. I tell myself there will be a third. And I hope whoever he or she may be, they do better at it than I have."
– Characters I love seeing them interact with
Well, Booster Gold is the obvious answer. The best buddy-comedy duo in comics! And after that really all of the JLI! But I really dig his interactions and dynamic with Tora! They are always so supportive of each other, it's very sweet.
I also like his interactions with Babs in the Bird of Prey run. Reminds me of a lot of my online friendships, just two people with a lot in common who like hanging out!
I want him to hang out with the Question more.
– Last thing before sleeping headcanons
Ted strikes me as a classic, "just-one more thing" type of insomniac. Like just staying up way too late doing shit. So I guess before sleep, he probably takes a nice long shower to unwind, pop a few painkillers, and the proceeds to lie awake staring at the ceiling in bed until his brain shuts off.
– Sleeping habits headcanons
Ted sleeps like crap. He tosses, he turns, he throws off the blankets, then steals them back. He snores like a train, talks in his sleep, and generally just makes a lot of noise for someone unconscious. He also tends to fall asleep in improbable or uncomfortable places and positions. If he's sleeping next to someone, he will kick them in the shins. Guaranteed.
– First thing after waking up headcanons
I think he's one of those people who is absolutely shit in the morning. He's put his body through hell, waking up is painful! So he does a lot of stretches to get the kinks out, bitching the whole time. After that, puts the coffee on, pops his meds, and gives himself a solid hour to feel human.
– Favorite locations headcanon
Ted has always struck me as a basement kind of guy. Like, he'd be comfortable wherever as long as its dark, underground, and full of cool shit. He's mentioned being a city boy in canon, so I think he has a soft spot for places like dive bars and hole-in-the wall clubs. He loves Chicago and New York, and generally feels more at home in colder climates than warm. He strikes me as the kind of guy who rides the subway for fun, as well.

i'd love some tokusatsu recommendations!! i'be been interested in the genre for a while but don't really know where to start. i know of ultraman and kamen rider, but that's about it.
Ok lets go. Tailored toku recs for mutuals who don't toku a lot
Ninja Sentai Kakuranger
I remember you showing some interest in this season of super sentai and it is a good one! All sentai is a little funny but Kakuranger is one of the comedy focused ones alongside the also incredibly good Gekisou Sentai Carranger (it gets dramatic down the line but early on it's very much like 'It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia' at first). Power Rangers adapted it slightly for a brief story arc, but Kakuranger's original stuff is pure gold.
Ultra Q (1966) / Ultraman (1966) / Ultraseven (1967)
The originators by Tsuburaya Productions. Not just of Ultraman, but of a lot of the henshin hero style that became so popular with toku.
After working on Godzilla 1954, Eiji Tsuburaya put together Ultra Q, an anthology sci-fi/horror series. It was only two weeks after that show that with Ultraman that he finally added a hero and even more kaiju. Ultraseven follows the spirit, but with more emphasis on interactions with alien cultures. While still maintaining the anthology style and speculative narratives.
The reason I recommend these OGs is because they're pretty much pulp sci-fi and I already know you dig that vibe. These are not the only Showa era Ultra shows, but they definitely have a certain feel that gets lost a bit as emphasis on drama and action amps up following Toei releasing Kamen Rider and the early Super Sentai onwards into the 70s. Not that later series don't have anthology style episodes, but going back to the OGs is just a distinct experience.
Shin Ultraman also released this year and Anno Hideki of Shin Godzilla and NGE fame is a big fan who directed it after the style of the original '66 series, so look forward to that too once it's available here.
I very badly want to recommend the 1971 OG Kamen Rider but the first series is like a whopping 98 eps (similarly for Himitsu Sentai Gorenger at 84 eps bc they didn't realize they had such a big hit on their hands). OG KR delves into a more personal sci-fi (Showa era riders majority derive their powers from being converted into superhuman cyborgs, usually because they were forced or felt it necessary to combat the evil organization of the season). VERY strong anti-fascism vibes. Shotaro Ishinomori's original concept manga is available in one big hardcover too though.
This is mostly older stuff but I think you'd super dig 'em. If you find you like it or wanna dip into other eras we shall Meet Again...............

I 100% completed Variable Barricade a week ago. It took me 60+ hours to get all the 19 different endings and unlock all the illustrations. It was a fun visual novel and ranks high on my small list of otome games I’ve played.
The game follows the protagonist Hibari Tojo who is the heir to the rich and influential Tojo family. For some reason her grandfather has selected four suitors that will compete for Hibari’s hand. Hibari is strictly against this and on top of everything she finds out the men are walking disasters - unemployed and all of them have questionable backgrounds. What was the old coot thinking, throwing her to these insufferable excuses of men?? And how could any of them possibly represent the prestigious Tojo family as her fiancé? She’s determined to reject their attempts at wooing her. Being forced to live in the same house with the worthless gold diggers, Hibari will eventually unfold the true reasons behind the situation she’s been put in.
The gorgeous art attracted me to the game. I can’t overstate how beautiful the game is. When I heard the genre is romantic comedy I thought its easy-going themes would fit my mood. I’m probably the least romantic person on Earth so I was worried the game would be too syrupy for me. However, I was happy to find out the game is quite light on romance and it’s very innocent too.
The story is pure slice-of-life fluff with some twists, so if you’re into wilder stories with heavy themes, “Varibari” may be the wrong kind of game for you. It has drama alongside the humorous tone and I felt the character development was good. There is a true route too that surprised me with its events. The characters interact with each other a lot and I liked how there was a sense of camaraderie despite the guys being rivals.  I found the story quite well-written and the localization was good with not that many errors.
The characters are likeable (at least after you get to know them better) and each of their personalities are brought to life by fabulous voice acting. All the characters - including the protagonist - are voiced in Variable Barricade. I was especially pleased with Hibari’s and Nayuta’s voice actors who did a tremendous job depicting the characters’ quirks.
The game has great quality of life features like skipping chapters you've read, indication of dialogue choices that increase romance, tracking of unlocked endings and rewind. These make it a breeze to get all the possible endings for the love interests. The UI looks nice and is easy to navigate.
If I have to come up with some bad points, I think the music could have been more memorable. It wasn’t bad, sometimes it was even catchy, but now when I think back to it I can’t remember any of the melodies.
I enjoyed my time with Variable Barricade. It made me and my husband laugh at many occasions when I was playing it in the evenings mostly. I liked Café Enchanté’s story/stories more but localization quality was so much better in Varibari it made the game easier for me to enjoy. The huge amount of illustrations is a real treat as the art is easily some of the best I’ve seen in visual novels.

Started watching Parallel World Pharmacy, and I have some thoughts.
It’s not bad, exactly, but it’s not as interesting as it should be. The big problem I have with isekai is that so many of them are so similar. You’ve got your nerdy teen who dies, ends up in a fantasy world with super-awesome magic powers that let him beat up monsters real good and attract 2-5 hot girls that want to befriend him (or more, depending on the target audience), who uses those powers to beat up some monsters real good.
PWP should be different, and to an extent it is. So far, no monsters have been beaten up. But he still has super-awesome magic powers, some of which would let him beat up monsters real good if he ran into them, some of which are restricted to only trivializing everything within a two-field radius of pharmacology. There’s still the hot girls being set up as our hero’s technically-not-a-harem, still a bunch of exposition about lore that doesn’t really matter, the story still centers around all the awesome stuff the hero can breeze through.
I’m disappointed.
If you want a more detailed but stream-of-consciousness series of thoughts, keep reading.
Why is it that fictional hard-working scientists need to have some dramatic reason for wanting to develop life-saving medicines or whatever? Maybe it’s just me, but “I want to invent better medicines so nobody has to suffer like my sister did!” feels like a weaker motivation than “I want to invent better medicines because it’s good when people can be healed.” Like, yeah, the first is more personal, but it’s also more superficial, if that makes sense. Makes it seem like he’s not trying to save people because he knows it’s the right thing to do, so much as because he feels bad.
Dr. Kanji musing on how long it’s been since he directly interacted with a patient and wanting to be a small-town pharmacist some day feels like a way to blunt the impact of a researcher motivated by wanting to find a cure/treatment for a fairly specific kind of tragedy being sent to a world where he can’t actually research that. It’s also a nice touch of characterization.
The name of the dude Kanji got isekai’d into is Farma de Médicis. Farma de Médicis, the medical pharmacist. He makes a joke about how his name sounds like a pharmaceutical company, but still.
Having Kanji/Farma and his maid walk by some paintings of his family while she was expositing about them was a good way to add a bit of visual interest to the exposition scene, without needing to budget too many animation frames. It’s not that interesting, but as exposition-dump scenes go, it’s…above-average.
Speaking of which, I’ve seen and read plenty of isekai and isekai-adjacent stories, and I’m kinda sick of them hovering in this area where the hero is treated more or less like normal despite asking questions that would be really weird for someone from this world to ask. Amnesiac or no, it’s weird to ask if “that kind of thing exists here.” Some characters remark that Farma seems different after the lightning strike, but in more of a “comedy beat” way than a “foreshadowing” way.
The maid worried about the possibility that Farma might not ever remember how to do Divine Arts (magic). I think that it would be pretty neat if Farma had to make do with modern medicine instead of healing magic. Farma casts a water spell ~30 seconds after the scene with the worried maid ends. His biggest problem is that he casts too much magic and can’t make it stop. About a minute later, he starts conjuring everything from gold to sugar. Apparently he can conjure any kind of pure material, and “eliminate” (vanish) it too.
Kanji’s also able to recall Farma’s old memories of how the fantasy world’s medicines work, though I’m not sure whether they’re magical/alchemical elixers or just mundane folk remedies.
Did we need a maid-exposits-about-Farma scene and a tutor-exposits-about-magic scene in the first episode? Also, one of the five magical elements in this world is “none of the above”. (They’re technically called “attributes” and the fifth attribute’s name is just “none,” but still.)
Apparently it’s supposed to be impossible for people to conjure more than one type of substance (ie, both water and earth, like Kanji/Farma did), and that conjuration like the water trick he did practically by accident normally requires a divine wand and an incantation, and Farma using just the wand lets him conjure a “water spear” the size of a small waterfall. And he breaks the magic-potential-meter thingy his tutor grabs to make sure he didn’t waste his whole life’s magical reserves in one shot, and apparently breaking the Divinometer (its actual name, at least in the subtitles) is completely unheard of.
Kanji insisting that his divine mark is a perfectly normal burn while it’s glowing with divine light is pretty funny. I wish it was a consistent funny character trait instead of one funny moment, though. This show could use more moments where Kanji is wrong.
Apparently this world is so primitive that they don’t realize that blurry vision can be improved by looking through a small gap in your fingers. Which is basically just squinting with extra steps, but it also activates Farma’s divine diagnosis-vision, which is another power he has. Ugh. Boundless reserves of not-mana, power over all four elements and “none,” a Divine Eye, knowledge of cutting-edge modern medicine in a world rubbing bat wing lotions on wounds—pick one cheat power and stick to it!
Anyways, Farma’s tutor sees all of these weird inhuman powers, realizes Farma has no shadow (by the way Farma has no shadow), and assumes he must be some kind of monster. He shows up later to bring her medicine, and she answers the door in full plate armor. I mention it because I found her paranoia funny. Also, she apparently did this (and assumed he poisoned the medicine) because she thinks Farma is the incarnation of Panactheos, the god of medicine, which makes me wonder what kind of dude that god is. What kind of medical god tries to murder people for freaking out over the god being weird?
Also, nobody else notices that Farma doesn’t have a shadow. He doesn’t hide from people once he realizes he’s deshadowed, the inside of the manor isn’t dimly- or evenly-lit enough for shadows to not be a thing that happens (as in, the artists drew some shadows in there), and Farma even goes outside just for the heck of it, in the middle of the day, where his shadowlessness would be obvious.
“I need you in my life,” Farma says to the tutor. And a moment later, he gives her flowers. I’ve mentioned that the tutor is a pretty girl, just a bit older than Farma, who shows up in the OP as what looks like an employee at his pharmacy, right? So, um, we’re up to two not-so-subtle love interest characters, because this is a much more conventional isekai power fantasy than I’d been lead to believe.
Farma’s Divine Eye means there’s no House-ish tension around him trying to diagnose people—he just looks at the parts that hurt, guesses a diagnosis, and prescribes something when his diagnost-o-vision glows. Synthesizing the medicine is practically handwaved, since Farma can just conjure all component chemicals, so there’s no early-Ascendance-of-a-Bookworm struggle. There isn’t even a Dr. Stone appeal to learning how various medicines get made or work, because the anime rushes through the synthesis process and doesn’t discuss the biochemistry involved. Is the source material better about this? This feels like something that a light novel would be able to handle better, but also like something a typical author wouldn‘t bother with.
I am really getting tired of this thing where Kanji does un-Farma-like things or casually hands out medicine that shouldn’t exist, someone points this out, and then nothing comes of it. Either have Kanji/Farma be good at hiding this stuff, or have the people around him realize something’s wrong, or just don’t have there be this Big Secret! The tutor figured things out, so it’s not as bad as it could be, but still.
Apparently Kanji has the knowledge, skill, and tools to build a handheld microscope that can look at bacteria. Not, like, “he spends a whole episode scraping the necessary materials together,” or even “there’s a montage of him assembling the microscope”. The first we hear of this project is when he’s putting the finishing touches on it. Because he wasn’t gifted enough already.
Lots of isekai anime have this same round orangish city surrounded by off-white walls in the middle of a green field with a river running through it. Parallel World Pharmacy’s version of that city is hexagonal!

the amazing spider-man 1 & 2
they’re not THAT bad you guys are just being mean. (gotta admit that the harry storyline was fucking stupid, tho.) every time andrew garfield cries i end up crying, too. also: his version of spidey has the BEST interactions with kids. GWEN 💔. the effects are actually really good. same goes for the montages. and the swing scenes. ngl i felt sorry for max dillon. sony did andrew dirty and i will never forgive them for that.

GREAT song choices. love the coming of age aspect of this trilogy. the animated credits are beautiful. MICHELLE JONES WATSON EVERYONE. the vulture actually had a point. may being sexualized by men left and right is my villain origin story. can we stop talking about tony stark for ONE FUCKING SECOND. liz deserved better. ned leeds is an angel. everyone is bi. mr harrington deserves a medal. the banter is always on point. as is the awkwardness. nwh broke me but i loved every second of it.
