All the series combined, (pjo, hoo, toa) I think Trials of Apollo might be my favorite. I’ve said Heroes of Olympus for a while, but after finishing toa, I was actually really sad in a way that I wasn’t with the other series. This is my reasoning: *TOA SPOILERS AHEAD*
Lester/Apollo’s narration and character development was top notch. In The Hidden Oracle, at first I thought the book series was gonna be full of arrogance and whining. Oh, how it was the complete opposite. He went through stuff that no other god will ever go through. Pain, and grief. The empty feeling of not being yourself anymore. And he finally realized how the gods are, how clueless they have been about mortals and demigods. Everything that happened in toa was just building up to the perfect Apollo, the Apollo that’s not in fact perfect.
The characters. Like, these characters are so good? First of all, they are so fleshed out. Meg McCaffrey, who saw her own father dead and got mentally abused by the emperor who killed him. “The Beast,” was just himself, but Meg was too scared of him to stand up for herself. And like, how is an arrow kind of making me empathize with it? The arrow of Dodona was supposedly the worst piece of wood in the forest, and so Lester needed to prove the others wrong, and I think he did. Especially in that final battle against Python.
The amount of different stories and adventures. Obviously you would have sooo many adventures, because you need to get a different oracle in each one! In every single one, we’re introduced to a new character and new goal. It doesn’t really start in the first one, as it’s just introducing the main characters. In the second one, it’s Emmie, Jo, Calypso, and Leo. In the third one, it’s Piper, Jason, and Grover. In the fourth one, it’s Lavinia, Reyna, Hazel, and Frank (a lot of characters from SoN). In the last one, it’s just a lot of chb campers. Will, Nico, the Troglodytes, and more. See what I mean? There are so many different stories in just one series.
And lastly, how powerful it is. The fact that it could make me cry is impressive, because I don’t cry at much (book and movie wise). Jason’s death, Lester’s misery, Meg’s abuse, and so much more. It’s just so sad but powerful at the same time. If you prefer a different series, (PJO, HOO, TOA) then tell me why!

Damn Trials of Apollo really be hittin the feels man. Specifically The Tryant's Tomb. I started TOA forever ago and got back into it like a month ago? The first three books aren't bad at all, a lot of good moments, but there's just something about them that makes it hard to get through. Never had I had to push to finish a book. Usually, I can't stop reading, especially a Rick Riordan book. But I knew they would get good and boy, did they get good. Spoilers ahead, but finally they're giving Apollo his character development. The first two and like, a half of the third, books were setting it up (did not need that much but eh) but now we're getting to the part where Apollo admits he wasn't a good person. He hurt a lot of people, either leading to their death or wishing they could die because of their pain. He's finally realizing it and omg the shame and remorse he has for it is amazing. I've never had a main character just think so lowley of themselves. This man is actually offering up his life, not just to save his friends, but also cause he thinks he deserves it. I love finally hearing his thoughts and realizing the full extent of what his quest and the whole of TOA has caused on others. I mean just look at Jason. Also, I have to add I'm loving this more mature plot. It's so reveting. I mean, just look at Harpocrates and Sibyl. That part of the story just makes you wanna weep cause it's so sad. I'm loving it and whatever Uncle Rick did to get back on it and make this series better, I love it. Now I'm gonna go finish The Tryant's Tomb and cry.

the Frank and Leo parallels in HoO/TOA are so underutilized, it makes me so sad. They both lost their mothers. They both care deeply about Hazel. They’re both scared of fire but have an innate connection to it. Their arcs heavily involve them learning to accept it and culminate in them sacrificing themselves in a blazing inferno to defeat a major enemy and miraculously making it out the other side unscathed.
So where’s them bonding? Where’s Frank helping Leo get more comfortable with his own powers? Where’s the two of them working together to overcome their fears of fire? Where’s the two of them and Hazel being a little trio?

Trials of Apollo spoilers
(to the peeps living under a rock or are aware of what happens and chooses to live in the rive Nile)

I wanted to draw a scene from Trials of Apollo that killed me.
It was one thing when Jason Grace sacrificed himself. (curse you rick 😭) Thalia lost his brother again. Leo and Piper lost a best friend. Reyna lost a valiant hero and best friend. Nico lost his most trusted ally and brother to him. Percy, Annabeth, Hazel, Frank. His sacrifice shook the spirits of every Roman Soldier, who were his family.
WHICH IS EXACTYL WHY FRANK'S SACRIFICE ABSOLUTELY KILLED ME.
He would've died just to defend his bridge. To defend his family, friends, and the people he loved. He knew he had to sacrifice himself to protect them. Just like Jason.
Also I think he should've stayed dead.
LIKE IMAGINE HOW MUCH THAT WOULD'VE SCARED THE FANDOM. Rick had already sort of killed Leo. Then he actually killed one of the seven. Devastating. But imagine if he permanently killed two. Then what? Who's next?? Piper? Hazel? Annabeth? PERCY??? Idk im insane and love me my angst fics of Frank staying dead. Like I love him. One of my favs. But damn, just imagine the scare.

I think where Gideon + harrow’s arc and baru + tain hu’s arc drastically diverges is the response to the other’s death. Obviously both harrow and baru are ravaged by grief, having seen the woman they love most offer her own life for the survival of them and other people. But harrow decides she cannot continue to live in a universe that doesn’t have Gideon, and lobotomizes herself to avoid devouring her soul, which has extreme consequences for her future, making her a half-assed lyctor. Gideon, upon gaining control of her body and realizing what she had done, is pissed as hell - in her view, she gave harrow her life, and harrow didn’t even want it. She dishonored her sacrifice by refusing to let her truly die, and rejected the powers of lyctorhood she hoped to give her.
On the other hand, while baru is just as griefstricken, to the point she develops a whole entire tulpa, she instead makes the difficult decision to accept tain Hu’s sacrifice. She honors her demand to let her die, and spends the following 2 books doing her best to not let her death go to waste. She has the opportunity to spare her, to let her be kept as a hostage, but rejects it, knowing it’s not Hu wants, and that the only way Baru can truly be free to topple the Masquerade and protect their people is by Hu dying. Just as Gideon accuses Harrow of erasing her memory so she is no longer beholden to her, instead Baru is incredibly beholden to Tain Hu, in the way that she is like a memorial to her dead wife, trying to represent what she stood for and to make her proud and content with how she has continued since her death.
I’m not really sure where I’m going with this, but it’s a fascinating parallel. If Baru and Tain Hu traded places with Gideon and Harrow, I think Hu would be just as furious as Gideon was at Baru for refusing to consume her soul. Would Baru have gone through with the lobotomy/“the work” if she was in Harrow’s shoes? Or would she have devoured Hu’s soul, and then used it as fuel to get revenge against John and the other lyctors, to make sure that nobody else would have to endure the pain that she and Hu endured? On the flipside, would Harrow have allowed Gideon to be executed? Or would she have protested and had her kept as a hostage, keeping her powers in check?
Much to think about.

headcanon:
the poison was slowly decaying Lester's body from inside, as he was turning into a zombie;
he must have smelled a little off, not enough to figure out what is happening; just enough to notice that something is clearly not right, as the process was quite slow
