The Bard's Songs
Come away, O human child!
To the waters and the wild
With a faery, hand in hand,
For the world's more full of weeping
than you can understand.
More than twenty years ago (well fuck me) I made a mixtape for our d&d campaign. That was when people used to burn audio CDs, and this was mixtape #39 (out of 271). I think I was playing an elf bard at the time.
I'm posting it here for posterity, for nostalgia, and as a snapshot of vanilla d&d lore/mood, as I experienced it back in the day. If it seems frightfully basic and predictable, well it was. Pretty much everything in that list is from Britain or Ireland or somehow evoking them. But hey, I ain't from there. It was exotic for me!
So it's vanilla and predictable, my little escapism soundtrack. And you know what else it is? A damn good compilation if I say so myself. "Fisherman's Blues" is one of best albums of all time, Loreena McKennitt is a genius, the Chieftains are giants, Pavlov's Dog are one of the few dad rock bands whose hits didn't age terribly, and hey, because I just listened to the whole thing again, when Enya stops singing "May it be" and the track continues with the Shire and the Fellowship leitmotifs, I am FULLY crying again, just bawling over here.
So here's to 2024, and the next 20 years of roleplaying, or as long as we got. Happy new year, everyone. Squeeze every drop out of life, and may your aim be true. The bard's songs will remain.
Tomorrow will take us away
Far from home
No one will ever know our names
But the bards' songs will remain
In my thoughts and in my dreams
They're always in my mind
These songs of hobbits, dwarves and men and elves
Come close your eyes
You can see them too

I'm not trapped with you, you're trapped here with me.
Danny, in Gotham after bolting from the GIW after a reveal gone bad, is on the roof of a building.
The building is surrounded by GIW agents.
Danny can't fly away, or they'll gun him down.
When the local vigilante lands behind him, all he can think about is how he isn't ready to die all the way. That he admires Gotham Vigilante's, but he isn't going to doubt that they'd side with the letter of the law.
So he overshadows them and bullshits his way out of the situation.
For a Bat, which Danny has heard are notoriously stubborn and tenacious, the chick he's possessing is surprisingly chill. She isn't fighting back at all, completely content to hand over the reigns.
Usually there's like, a little struggle.
Cass, however, is quietly perusing through the memories of the ghost that has possessed her.
He had no ill will when he did the jump, only fear. He only seeks to escape, and Cass understands that with an intimacy she wished she did not have.
What she wants to know is the why.
Hence, subtly going through his mind.
There are many things she was not aware were laws, and she believes that Bruce does not know are laws as well.
She will have to tell him.
He will fix it, one way or another.
She will make sure that he does.
So she watches the most recent memory of her Ghost possessing her; memorizes how it feels for him, how he did it from his point of view, and decides to take over so that she can get him to optimal safety.
If he is a ghost, and a ghost is a soul, and she has a soul; she should be able to take control again. Possess herself. Lock him in.
She is right.
She can feel the brief struggle, the confusion, as her ghost is forced to be the passenger. He tries to leave, but she focuses on how possession felt for him and locks him in place.
Ah!
This would be a good time for a Star Wars quip. It will be funny, even if he does not understand it.
"Congratulations. You are being rescued. Please do not resist."

One of the earliest examples of Leo’s “I’ll do my own thing to accomplish our goal without discussing it with my team first” is in episode one. It’s super, super quick, and ultimately inconsequential, but it subtly sets up a great precedent that I think is very interesting.
When the boys need to grab the medallion from Splinter without Splinter noticing, Raph, Mikey, and Donnie huddle together with Raph taking the lead in trying to devise a plan to get the mystic device. Meanwhile, Leo slinks away and grabs the device by clocking the situation (by knowing his father well enough to predict his actions - something he does with each family member multiple times in the series) and making a move on his own.
It works out perfectly fine, and is ultimately the best move, and it’s honestly okay that he didn’t consult everyone for something so small when it’s such a non issue to get it, but it nicely sets up how this tends to go in the series, including how it goes in the movie.
To be honest episode one is actually really good at setting up a lot of things for each character in the long run, this is just one example that caught my attention, as small and unassuming as it is.

Ghost and jealousy? Like u hate me tf r u jealous about bitch and he’s like the silent jealous mf type

You’re a catch, too – liked by everybody, getting along with others easily. Charming; that's something Simon can't fucking comprehend. Because you get offers from people who're willing to take their shot with you (flowers, love notes, prospective dates), and every time you bring a new person's name up, he just has a creative insult to off-handedly sling: oh, that wanker?
And Simon—god, Simon is so fed up. Don't they know you’re a man-eater? He doesn't see it, doesn't get it at all. But he doesn't intervene, tells himself not to get involved because that would mean admitting that he's holding a torch for you, which is absolutely not the case. So he just seethes, quietly; he's the picture of stoicism and indifference. Of course he is. Not even remotely affected.
But then, a bold fucking rookie. Private what's-his-name. Not even important enough to register on Simon's radar so it catches him off-guard when he finds out that you have a date – showing up to Simon's room after he messages you for a fast fuck, in a dress and all done up in a way that's clearly not for him. And you impatiently tell him that you have to leave in 20 minutes.
He doesn't make this quick. In fact, it's the slowest that he fucks you, ravages you until you’re late. Hickeys all over your chest that can't be covered by the cut of your dress, makeup and hair ruined. There's a mess between your thighs, and he's bloody smug because he knows that while you’re on your date, the only thing on your mind is going to be him and how sore he made your cunt.
Simon doesn't say it. He doesn't have to. Everything he did to you already says enough: mine. And he just has a sardonic smile on his face and bids you farewell with a 'Have fun.'
