book recs!! (part 1)
(these are just my opinions but i read a lot of books and i enjoy making tumblr posts)
“i can never finish a book. i want something that i can read continuously off and on for a few months that’s still nice and comforting.”
read howl’s moving castle. literally so cozy, so fairy-tale-like, the characters are so loveable, and you can totally read it for a bit, ignore it for a month, and then come back and not be confused. i love it.
“i want a fun to read fantasy series that has great characters and is the perfect escapism magical series to get sucked into.”
this is a genre i like to call “twelve year old fantasy.” books originally written for young teens/middle schoolers that are actually really good and super lovely to read.
first up we have— the nevermoor series by jessica townsend!! infinitely love these books. all the characters are so well developed and so easy to fall in love with, the society and government is thought out SO well without getting too dark, and the magic is incredibly fun to read. i will always recommend these books. i’m so in love with them. diverse and queer characters and i love it so much ahh!!
next we have the land of stories series by chris colfer. i think most people have read these but oh my god. every time i reread them i remember how much i loved them. if you love fairy tales and third person omniscient (done really well!!) is your thing, this is a must-read. genuinely such fun books.
then harry potter, obviously. i don’t support jk rowling but people who say her writing is bad are lying. the worldbuilding in these books is impeccable.
(and howl’s moving castle again).
“i want queer books by the same author that are all connected but aren’t exactly a series that are funny and smart and FUN.”
this is mainly two authors (for my personal recs). becky albertalli and alice oseman.
becky albertalli— oh my god!! i’m gonna make a separate post ranking all her books or something. these books are like CANDY. simon vs the homo-sapiens agenda specifically; every time i pick it up i sorta stop-drop-and-roll. i finish it within two hours. the perfect amount of romance and queerness and friend group dynamics (SO GOOD!!!) and everything you want. genuinely like candy. these books are addictive and the characters are so wonderful— even the worst ones you love. LOVE LOVE LOVE.
alice oseman— whole different genre, really. EXTREMELY relatable books about teenagers (queer and not) that delve much more into deeper and sadder emotions without being depressing. beautiful writing. i love her. characters are so deep and beautiful and ahh!!! love her books. LOVE.

hunter!eddie AU snippet
Eddie Diaz killed his first werewolf one month before his twelfth birthday and knew that it was wrong. It was too soon. It was customary that a Diaz would make their first kill at 15, but his father sat him down and told him that he needed to be a man now. So he did it.
What he didn't know was that his mother was pregnant with his sister. What he didn't know was that his father would be home less and less. What he didn't know was that the tension between the werewolves and the hunters was getting worse and worse. Or maybe he did and just didn't want to.
What did know was that he needed to be a man, so he shoved a wooden stake into a woman's heart, saw the life drain out of her eyes, and he knew that it was wrong.

top 5 horror book recommendations? it's spooky season and i need to get my read on...
Hell yeah! Gonna break this down a little. First an obligatory rehash of books I always recommend for this, these are like all-time faves for me
Wounds/North American Lake Monsters by Nathan Ballingrud - can't choose between these two, so they're tied for my favorite single author short story collection. Nathan Ballingrud is one of my favorite writers of all time
Her Body and Other Parties by Carmen Maria Machado - a very very close second for my favorite single-author short story collection. Machado is a beautiful writer and finding an author writing such powerful horror from a queer woman's perspective was world changing for me.
The Haunting of Hill House by Shirley Jackson - COME ON!!!! You might have already read this but consider reading it again! Absolute classic.
The Cipher by Kathe Koja - dark, fucked up meditation on art and addiction and toxic relationships. I think about this book all the time. A guy finds a weird hole in his apartment basement and then everything goes wrong (first slowly and then very very quickly)
Red X by David Demchuk - talked about this a lot before too but I really do love it. Fictional story inspired by real life serial killings that took place in Toronto's gay village over decades. The author inserts essays throughout the book that makes it part memoir as well. A supernatural story about real queer trauma.
--
Okay with that out of the way, here's some recommendations for stuff I think would be fun for Halloween specifically
Echoes edited by Ellen Datlow - OKAY CHEATING I ALSO RECOMMEND THIS ALL THE TIME BUT IT'S A PERFECT OCTOBER BOOK!!! Fuck-off huge ghost story anthology. Huge range of tones, pretty diverse group of contributing authors, it's my all-time favorite anthology.
Slewfoot by BROM - this one's got major autumn vibes. It's a story of a woman in Puritan New England who's accused of witchcraft. It's also a story about the devil. Kind of. The print version has really amazing paintings by the author, but I've heard this is also good in audio.
Come Closer by Sara Gran - this is a great little novella. Possession story that really packs a punch. I can't really say much more than that, but it's not a huge time investment and I think it's really worthwhile.
Carmilla by Joseph Sheridan LeFanu - if you can, get the version edited by Carmen Maria Machado (she adds in some great footnotes and it has some neat art too). This is a classic and also quite a brisk read. The original lesbian vampire story.
Silver Nitrate by Silvia Moreno-Garcia - here's a new release for you! I always watch a ton of horror movies in October, and if you're anything like me maybe you'll want to read a horror novel about horror movies. This story follows a female film editor in 90s Mexico and her washed up actor friend as they help a retired filmmaker complete his famously unfinished last film, which he had been making with a former Nazi occultist before strange misfortunes and the occultist's mysterious disappearance forced production to shut down.
Okay that was double the amount of recommendations requested so I'm stopping here. Haha don't look in the tags don't worry about it there's nothing there you're crazy

Zuko's Tiny Dilemma
Fandom: Avatar The Last Airbender
Author: boogum, @botherkupo
Rating: Teen
Word Count:  126,753
Pairings: Zutara, Yukka
Characters: Katara, Zuko, Aang, Sokka, Yue
Warnings: Canon Typical Violence
Tags: Humor, Friendship, Age Regression/De-Aging, Spirit Curses, AdventureZuko is an Awkward Turtleduck, Drama, Tiny Zuko is Grumpy, Season 1 canon divergence, Crack Treated Seriously, lots of gaang bonding, premise is ridiculous but this will suckerpunch your heart, Romance, Appa gives best cuddles
It was the kind of thing that happened in folktales: a cursed prince, a transformation that could not be broken. Except those princes usually became monstrous-looking creatures who needed true love's kiss to return to normal. They did not get stuck as a six-year-old boy depending on a bald runt and two Water Tribe siblings.

Good Omens Fic Rec: The False and the Fair
Growing up in the shadow of West Virginia’s Eden Mountain, Aziraphale Wright always expected to work for the family coal mining company. Anthony Crowley, the son of a down-and-out miner, was going to become a pilot and leave town forever. Now, thirty years later, neither of their lives have gone as planned, and an unexpected inheritance brings them back into one another’s orbit. *Minor Spoilers* I have not put together a top fics list, but this could be my #1. I read this about a month ago at least and I'm still thinking about it. This is not the first Appalachian AU I've ever seen, but it amazes me how we can make our blorbos fit anywhere. This is the best take I've seen though. This story is melancholy, slow, beautiful, thick with heavy mountain air. The setting is gorgeous. The parallels to canon excellent and unique. Even when it hurts, it's gentle and beautiful.
Crowley is at his best. He is kind, and able to find forgiveness even when he's been hurt so badly. He lives a simple, isolated farm life, but has found peace. It's lonely yes, but he doesn't live in despair. But Aziraphale? Oh Aziraphale. My heart aches for him. He does live in despair. In regret and shame, overwhelming guilt and self blame. This is my favorite Aziraphale depiction. It's a distinctly different character from the show, but that's because his life here shaped him. He's his own fully realized character. He's not the canon Aziraphale just plopped into West Virginia. He grew up there, it's in his bones. He is completely different, and yet fundamentally the same Angel we know. One more thing I want to commend, this handles Gabriel so well. Oh, he's a villain and he does some awful things. But it's the realistic kind of villainy, motivated by greed, status, and conformity. He's not cartoonishly evil. This is a man who exists in our world.
Normally I would talk about the plot, I really don't want to here. I think this one is best going in with no expectations and letting the story take you where it needs to go. If you can read this in one long setting I think it is worth it. There are plenty of moments you can take breaks, but if you can spare the time I think fully immersing yourself in this world is best.

lol my bad, sweets.
When I asked for fics I was mostly asking about jjk fics, but since you don't have those, maybe just what fics really REALLY does it to you in general. Personally I'm in multiple fandoms and I'd appreciate a good read. so really, anything. Like ur fav fics ever and ever.
Muah muah 😚😚
AHHHH I see I see
Yeah I don’t really read many jjk fics! Shocker, lol. Mainly because none of the main ships have really reeled me in (this includes satosugu… sorry, I’m just not a geto girlie…)
As for some general fic recs, I can happily oblige! (Most are haikyuu. That fandom shaped me as a person.)
‘campfire in your chest’ by deanpendragon: my all-time favourite fic ever. The fic that started it all: this is the reason I love friends-to-lovers, folks. Slowburn, mutual pining, everything I’ve tried for with IW was done first and done best here. I have reread this fic so many times that it feels nostalgic now. So, so incredibly beautiful. I will read anything by deanpendragon, but especially recommend ‘the certain things we lack’.
‘Then, Now, and Again’ by buttonstuck: I love so many of buttonstuck’s works but this is probably my favourite: poignant and so realistic, about getting together post-breakup and exploring what lead to the breakup in the first place. I loved the way it used time, and its structure was a huge inspiration for my other fic, ‘Soli Deo Gloria’.
‘Close to the Chest’ by darkmagicalgirl: Again: slowburn, coming of age, and really candid explorations of grappling with homophobia as a teen that did, in fact, make me a lil teary eyed.
‘Written in the Stars’ by Quixoticity: the pining. The pining. I remember reading this and thinking—oh, God, this is what I was going for with IW. I love soulmate aus with worldbuilding and angst and complexity (again, if you’ve read SDG you’ll know lmao) and this fulfilled everything.
‘Hemingway Can Suck It’ (orphan account): okay, this is just so funny. The premise is just giggle-inducing and I had to stop so many times to do the whole kicking-feet thing.
‘Spite’ by wellitcouldbeworse3: if you’re looking for a Levi x reader, literally look no further. I have such a soft spot for this fic (spot me in the comments!) but it truly is *that* levi fic from *that* levi author. A plethora of other fics, too (let me recommend ‘As The Spark Dies’ if you enjoyed the angst of IW).
There are so many more but these are the ones I’ve got off the top of my head. You’ll be able to tell that I have a genre of fic that I like, lmao. (I’ve also done a book rec list if you’re interested—it should be under the ‘book rec from me’ tag below) <3333

People keep making homophobic jiang cheng jokes like they're free samples, which I understand, I also think they're fun, but I think people are forgetting the very funny and very real possibility that wei wuxian had a homophic phase when he was a teen as well. But in the "no homo bro" kind of way or the "Hey love who you love, but you won't catch me doing that lmao" type vibes. I imagine if there ever was a make out wangxian scene during the cloud recesses arc, wei wuxian would have immediately denied any sort of homosexual activity that happened because he wore his favorite pair of socks or the incense used in that area made him act out or something equally as ridiculous. Give lan wangji a pity donation in these trying times.

God sometimes I'm amazed by how much lesbian content exists now, to the point where I will never be able to read/see all of it, and how much it's seemed to have exploded over the last few years. Even compared to what I had to read when I was coming out it's overwhelming!
And then I see Gentleman Jack cancelled. And First Kill. And Q-Force. And so many other lesbian shows, and how unappreciated lesbian media really is, even within the LGBT community and idk! I'm upset about it.

Stalking Jack the Ripper By Kerri Maniscalco Spicy 0/5 Romance 1/5 This is not the first book I have read from Kerri. I previously read the Kingdom of the Wicked series and instantly fell in love with it. Kerri knows how to write strong female protagonists; I love her style. Even though I do not tend to read young adult books, I love how it made me lose myself in this world. Though this is set in the Victorian era in London, our main character is anything but a high-society lady. I love Audrey Rose. I have always loved a good who did it in books and movies, so I am biased, but lately, I have not finished some books because I have been in a book slump, which helped me see it through.
I instantly fell in love with Thomas Creswell, he’s such a simp for Audrey, and I love it. This book is historical fiction, plot-driven, and keeps you on your toes. I respect Kerri for writing a thriller mystery and still having me feel angsty for Audrey and Thomas. I admire it because some authors can’t find the balance between romance and the plot, which she executed beautifully.

hey, i'm aster, and this is my book blog!
reading list/masterlist at the end.
i made this blog to encourage myself to read more often, to read more critically, to improve my writing, try out some new genres, and to try some more difficult books that i've been missing out on (among other things). i devoured books as a child, but fell off of them with age, even though i still love to read. just standing in waterstones is very exciting to me.
i'm aiming to finish a new book every two weeks, but it might take longer depending on the material, and if/how much i annotate it. once i'm done, i'll post my thoughts and analysis, as improving my skills in writing about writing is another big motivator for starting this blog. i hope i can provide some interesting commentary despite my inexperience!
i'd love some recommendations, too, of any kind. my current reading list is almost entirely YA fantasy, so i would love some suggestions that are completely different to that! fiction or non-fiction are both cool.
my tags are aster's book reviews, which are my general thoughts after finishing the book, and aster's analysis, which i could write halfway through my reading, and will be more specifically about themes or characters, etc.
i hope you enjoy my blog :)

Do you listen to podcasts?
I used to listen to them a lot when I was in college. I'd store up the episodes to play while I was driving to visit my partner. I'd listen on my walks across campus to class or to my car awards to go home when I stopped living on campus. The first one I ever listened to was Welcome to Night Vale. It was all over tumblr and, like when I got into Doctor Who, no one could tell me exactly what it was about. So I had to listen for myself.
My favorite genre of podcast is audio dramas. Fictional stories, but in podcast form. The Bright Sessions was one I found in college and fell in love with. You can imagine my surprise when I heard Lauren Shippen was writing books to go along with it. Each one follows a different MC from the podcast. The Infinite Noise follows Caleb and Adam as they navigate Caleb's empath ability; A Neon Darkness follows Damien as he reconciles with the truth of what he's done; and Some Faraway Place follows Rose as she discovers how to use her power and not get lost in other people's dreams.
It's been a while since I've talked about this series, but it holds a special place in my heart. It's a series about finding yourself and that it's okay to be different. There's a group of people out there that will love you for who you are.
