Hey there!

After reading your great insight on what to keep in mind when, say, writing the Seed brothers in fanfiction, I was wondering if you wanted to cap things off on what to keep in mind when writing Faith?

You don’t have to do it immediately, just when you have the time.

Hi! Sure, let’s conclude this “series” with the last member of the family, Faith Seed :)

First, while she’s referred to as a/the Siren by Dutch, a couple of NPCs, and in promotional material, this isn’t her official title in the Project. And as you probably know, Faith Seed’s real name is actually Rachel. However, unlike what the Far Cry Wiki claims, I’m quite certain her full name was never Rachel Jessop. Unfortunately, the biography on her Wiki page is partly made up and based on that incorrect assumption, so I really don’t recommend trusting it. This advice goes for all Far Cry characters, and I don’t think the Far Cry 6 Season Pass is a good reference, either, since the DLCs were written with the help of the Wiki.

In Far Cry 5, in addition to the story cutscenes, she has three sermons (here, here, and here), four answering machine messages (here, here, here, and here), and can also be randomly encountered in the Henbane River region as a “specter” (term used in the files). When she appears, she either hums the song “Oh The Bliss” (here and here) or talks to the Deputy. I think what she says really is worth listening to and adds a lot to her character. @teamhawkeye has done a tremendous job recording and compiling all her appearances in 9 videos (1 - 2 - 3 - 4 - 5 - 6 - 7 - 8 - 9)! As for Marshal Burke’s “apology video”, in which Faith also appears, it’s here.

I wrote a summary of what other characters say about her here (masterpost here), and all the NPCs’ comments about the Seed family are available here and here.

Faith isn’t in Far Cry Arcade and doesn’t have the same “combat lines” as most other characters, but you can still listen to everything she says during the final fight against her here.

Her deleted lines are here, and she has even more here. Most of them probably aren’t relevant anymore, but they’re still interesting and make me wonder what they originally had in mind for the character!

If I’m not mistaken, there’s only one note in Far Cry 5 written by Faith: the “Note for Tracey” (Hope County Jail). The note “A Confession” (Throne of Mercy Church) was also written by “Faith”, but it seems to me the author is one of Rachel’s predecessors.

Indeed, in-game evidence indicates Rachel wasn’t the first woman who took on the role of Faith Seed. There were at least two others before her, Lana and Selena, but we barely know anything about them or why they were replaced. Two letters, written by people who knew and loved them, can be found in the game in the Horned Serpent Cave and the King’s Hot Springs Hotel, but that’s pretty much it.

There was another note written by Faith, apparently cut from the game but still available in oasisstrings. It was supposed to be in her bunker, Faith’s Gate:

To my guardians, Because we have each other, we are already strong. But when the Collapse comes, this gate will need to be the heart of our strength. Guard it with your lives, knowing that any sacrifice you make will be for the future of humanity's greatest ideals and dreams. Jacob and Joseph have chosen you to guard this gate. You should be very proud. I know you serve me with love, but never forget that this will be your home, too. If you falter from this purpose, remember the bliss is there for you. With love, Faith

It’s worth noting that, in the game’s files, Faith (or the Henbane River) is sometimes referred to as “Selena Seed”. To me, this suggests that her identity and her backstory went through many changes during the development of Far Cry 5, and that might explain at least some of the grey areas surrounding the character.

Since she isn’t the Seed brothers’ biological sister and they weren’t raised together, The Book of Joseph doesn’t give a lot of information about her life before Eden’s Gate aside from what the game already tells us: she was a broken person, addicted to drugs, and was “adopted” by Joseph as his sister and Herald. When she joined the cult, since drugs are forbidden by the rules, she first had to overcome her addiction, and the book says she succeeded with the help of scopolamine (basically Bliss). It’s also explained she then worked with a geneticist named Peter, probably on developing Bliss. That said, in the game, he’s never mentioned, cultists never use the word “scopolamine” (always “Bliss”), and nothing clearly indicates it can be or has ever been used as a substitution treatment, so I’m not sure what’s still canonical...

Faith also appears in the short film Inside Eden’s Gate (not entirely canon to me but still good) where she’s played by Mackenzie “Kenz” Lawrén Johnson. I must admit Faith is my favorite Herald in the film; I really like Kenz Lawrén’s interpretation as well as her opinion on the character, which she gave in this interview!

Weirdly, Faith has often been referred to as the “half-sister” by the game’s main writers (such as here or here) even though she isn’t related to the Seed family in the game. It’s possible that she used to be but that was changed at some point. According to the Lead Writer, “Maybe she isn’t liked by the other two brothers as she didn’t grow up with them” (which is hinted at by NPCs and John himself in Far Cry 5). In a now-deleted interview for GameCrate, he also described her as “more of an outsider” and “probably the most fervent believer in Joseph”.

Greg Bryk, who co-created and played the Father, said he believed he needed Faith because “the maternal aspect of the feminine energy is missing” in his life even though it’s something “essential for Joseph to have”. He thinks there have been several Faiths because “when [Joseph] would lose faith, [he] would find another Faith.” And according to him, “she doesn’t need to have a specific energy because there’s something of an essence that [he needs] as opposed to a person”, and she almost has a “mother earth energy”.

While she does give a bit of information about her past life as Rachel in the game, saying she was “ostracized by her community”, “bullied by friends”, “abused by her family”, and “wanted to die”, it’s not always easy to know what’s true and what’s not when it comes to Faith because she’s known for being a master manipulator; lying is canonically part of her modus operandi. In a way, because Faith Seed is a role, I would say she’s also always performing. Unlike what a few NPCs claim, I don’t think that means she never tells the truth, but she’s still undoubtedly “very skilled at twisting the facts and turning any situation to her advantage”, as the game’s Narrative Director put it.

Although the details are unclear, I believe it’s true Rachel was “lost” and “broken” before she arrived in Hope County and joined the Project. It’s also true that, as Faith Seed, she’s now powerful, dangerous, and not innocent anymore, as her former best friend Tracey Lader, who knows her very well and witnessed her transformation (but was unable to stop it), warns the Deputy. I neither mean nor think the situation Faith is in is normal, healthy, or the best thing that could have happened to her, but I do think saying she’s unhappy with it, helpless, in danger, or that she only wishes she could run away from the cult really is a misunderstanding of the character. Faith knows what she’s doing, and she’s very good at doing it. To me, she’s the most powerful Herald.

Since the lore is a bit inconsistent, we’re not entirely sure how the Bliss works and who created it, but we know it’s an almost magical, hallucinogenic and pacifying drug made from “bliss flowers” (heavily inspired by Datura stramonium) that Faith is immune to, can control, and uses to brainwash people. “The Bliss” is also a place, but once again, the details are unclear. It could be her bunker, or maybe just a distorted version of reality that individuals who are exposed to the drug “live” in. Wherever or whatever it is, most people never truly come back from it or fully break free from Faith’s influence, as seen with the Marshal in the game…

In the Project, Faith’s role is to lure (hence the nickname “Siren”) people into the cult and convince them to follow the Father, often with the help of Bliss. If they keep resisting or are “too full of fear and doubt”, high doses of the drug can be administered to them and turn them into Angels, who are comparable to zombies according to some characters. Bliss irreversibly damages people’s brains, and those who become Angels unfortunately can never be saved. Faith and her followers seem to think they’re beautiful creations because they’re faithful to the Project and unable to sin. It seems she has the power to control them (at least partly), and the cult doesn’t hesitate to use them as “shock troops” or “slave labor and beasts of burden”, as NPCs say. They’re indeed very docile and resistant... as well as hard to kill.

Again, there are some discrepancies regarding what happens to potential converts in the Henbane River region, but it seems people first have to walk along the Pilgrimage path and, at the end of it, take a literal leap of faith from the statue of Joseph, just like Faith explains she did (even though whether or not the statue already existed at the time is a bit uncertain). As unbelievable as it sounds, NPCs confirm it’s entirely possible to survive the leap. After walking the Path, some pilgrims become Angels, some simply join the Project, and others don’t survive, either because they don’t make it to the end or die when they jump (maybe because their faith isn’t strong enough, I’m not sure how that works).

In the Family, Faith can be described as “the favorite child” (and I think that makes John jealous), who saw Joseph as her savior when they met and wants others to experience the same feeling, by force if necessary. Just like her brothers, she basically weaponizes her trauma and makes people relive a sublimated version of her life story: she targets the most vulnerable individuals, gives them drugs to ease their torment, and sometimes takes their minds away from them. Even though Faith is fully capable of thinking for herself, isn’t mind-controlled, was a drug user before she joined the Project (not after), and left her old self Rachel “in the darkness” willingly to be reborn as Faith Seed, she still became a new person for the Father and expects the same from anyone she converts, even if that means she has to completely brainwash them.

In conclusion, we don’t really know much about Rachel and her backstory, simply that she was broken, saw Eden’s Gate as a chance to start anew, and happily took it. Since she was young, desperate, and therefore suggestible when she met Joseph, one can wonder if Faith is simply a manipulated, brainwashed victim; a poor, helpless soul devoured by a cult. But although that situation is far from ideal or normal, she and other characters confirm that she too has teeth, and she doesn’t hesitate to use them. Rachel should theoretically just have been a victim, but as Faith Seed, she’s transcended this status. She’s found purpose, power, and is committed to her beliefs. Not everyone in Hope County precisely knows who she is, but now, she does. She’s a multifaceted mystery whom people tend to underestimate, and it’s something she likes to cultivate because that’s how she gets them. She’s a Siren, but in my opinion, also a Phoenix, who was consumed completely and rose up from her own ashes to be born again. Rachel was broken, but Faith is strong. Rachel lost herself, but Faith was found. Rachel was nothing; Faith can be anything.

I haven't been writing that much as of late (blaming Black Sails), but i do have some stuff to show for two different fics.

He laughed. And she grabbed her phone, placing it back on the table beside her. She only had a few more days left in the hospital and then she could go ‘home’. She wishes she could go home, back to her own bed; but she’ll be stuck in a hotel room until she’s fit to travel all the way to Maine. That is going to be a long treacherous ride. 

“I remember that one time I got injured on base and was stuck in the infirmary for three,” she stopped for a moment, taking a deep breath. “Molly stayed with me for most of those days. You, staying by my side, reminded me of that time.” 

“She cared about you, I’m sure if she was still here today she’d be here.” 

She looked over at him with a soft smile. “I know she would have been.” She looked away and sighed. “I miss her.” 

“I know you do, kotyonok!” 

After the ambush she didn’t care about her injury or how much pain she was in because of it. She just missed her best friend, the one that got her life cut short; just like all those civilians they were escorting. It wasn’t fair, not by a long-shot. Why does she get to go on when Molly doesn’t? It was a cruel joke.

When The World Falls

About twenty minutes passed before the copper hovered above the landing site. Two by two they repelled down the rope to the ground, meeting up with their respective squads. 

Liz listened on to what Soap was saying, or she was half listening to what he was saying. “And Liz, you’ll be with Ghost.” 

She sighed in relief, expecting to be with one of the others. “Oh thank god,” she mumbled under her breath. This mission was starting to look up, even if just a little bit. 

She could hear a soft, muffled chuckle behind her. It put a smirk on her face. She turned around and looked up at him, meeting his blue eyes with her brown ones. “So, what are we doing?”

He slowly blinked his eyes and furrowed his brows, then sighed. “We have to clear out the south side and look for anything that might be worth something.” 

“Seems easy enough.” 

“That’s what Roach said last time.” He laughed. “And it ended up being the opposite.”

Anyway, been spending most of my writing time lately working on a request, but since I just need to edit and clean it up more (bear with me please, Anon!) I’m gonna share this instead. My narrative experiment has fallen apart from what I was originally aiming for, but hopefully it’s still okay 😬

It is not dissimilar from their want of adventure: a calling they cannot ignore.

To do so would be as though to deny something important, as though to reject their very nature. Something intrinsically linked to their very core.

Something which cries out for a revelation, for an answer to the hollow longing that has ever trailed them.

But the more they think of it – the deeper they tread into the murky ichor of that wounded abyss – the more they feel the desolation upon their soul, the harrowing agony of something missing.

The agony of not remembering.

But what am I forgetting, the young traveller wonders with a troubled expression after yet another enigmatic dream.

Briefly, their eyes cast to a pair of sleeping twins as they attempt to brush the recurring question aside. A familiar melancholy blooming within their breast.

They shake their head.

It doesn’t matter, the despondent traveller vainly tells themselves as they set out on their ongoing journey, It can wait another day.

Until they find a clue into the answers they seek, it can wait another day…

And another day comes.

And another.

And another.

Until weeks have gone by.

Until months have fled them.

They press on through the unexpected turns of their journey, persisting through the expectations placed upon them.

All the while their question remains unanswered and the dreams continue on.

The memories continue on.

AJAY for the Wip Game give me my BOY

There was a growing commotion outside that was becoming hard to ignore. Ajay rolled over in bed and sighed, wondering not for the first time what he’d done in life to deserve never knowing a moment’s rest since arriving in Kyrat. Shutting his eyes, he considered trying to drown out the sound of Yogi and Reggie as they spoke animatedly outside the walls of his parent’s home; however, it was becoming readily apparent that someone else was out there with them and he groaned in aggravation before rolling out of bed and onto his feet.

By the time he’d exited the front door and joined them in the yard, the two swindlers were at full steam, preaching to whatever unlucky bastard had wandered up the mountain and found themselves at the Ghale residence. As he stepped out from beneath the porch’s canopy, however, his heart leapt in his chest at the sight of the person standing at the end of the dirt path. Anna seemed to be humoring Yogi and Reggie as best as she could, but he could tell by the look on her face that she wasn’t the least bit interested in whatever they were trying to sell and was close to losing her patience.

“Anna,” he called as he stepped closer, unable to conceal his surprise at her appearance.

Her eyes swept towards him, taking in the sight of him with a true smile finally gracing her face.

“Ajay,” she replied. “You’re a hard man to find.”

Pushing past a protesting Yogi, Ajay approached her, taking in the way she had to incline her head to hold his gaze.

“Sorry, if I’d known, I’d have-”

“It’s fine. I enjoyed the trek – got a pretty decent view of the whole country from up here, huh?”

“I guess. Haven’t had much time yet to enjoy it.”

She merely nodded in understanding; he followed her gaze out over the valley below and allowed himself a moment to drink in the sight of it. It truly was something, he realized suddenly; it made him think of his mother and father standing in this exact spot 20 years prior, enjoying a sunrise or sunset together before the Kyrati conflict embroiled both of them in it and their relationship soured.

“There’s a much better view just up the hill, if you’d like to partake,” Reggie broke the silence, gesturing towards the tent they’d established since being booted from the main house. “We’ve also got a special offer for-“

“This was your parents’ house?” Anna asked, turning towards Ajay and giving him her undivided attention.

“Uh, yeah. Back when I was really little. I don’t remember it at all,” he replied as he shoved his hands into his pockets.

“It’s nice,” she conceded, staring up at the house before her, smiling at the obvious renovation it had been undergoing. “Not a bad spot to eke out a living, I suppose.”

“I suppose,” he agreed, kicking at the dirt beneath his boot.

What was it about this one girl that made him so goddamn awkward? It didn’t help having Yogi and Reggie there watching their exchange like hawks…but even before, when it was just the two of them down in the valley, she’d managed to make him a stuttering, fumbling mess. So much for first impressions…or second or third…or twelfth, as the case was probably here.

Comfort Tag Game

Every time I do things like this I’m always reminded of how indecisive I am haha

Comfort Movie: Hmm, I feel like when I want to have something on in the background I always tend to lean towards action movies haha. They’re easy to watch and can be nice for just hanging out. The ones I probably have seen the most are the John Wick movies.

Comfort Food: Ooh a hard one haha. I’m going to say my #1 is my mom’s menudo (Mexican-style). What’s more comforting than homemade soups? Some other foods that I’m quite fond of and are very warm and comforting are bread sticks, mac & cheese, and rice (just about any form of rice lol).

Comfort Clothing: T-shirts/tank tops and soft shorts, my “silk” robe (idk what it’s made of exactly, but it's not a fuzzy one), and in the winter I love my thick, green flannel (it’s so soft and warm).

Comfort Song: I don’t really have a particular comfort song. I’d say in general if I’m relaxing or studying I like to listen to classical music (Devil's Trill Sonata by Giuseppe Tartini is really nice for writing) or video game ambience/music.

Comfort Book: Oh this is kinda tough cause I’m not really sure if I’ve ever read the same book twice. (Does my own writing count? Haha). Wait, actually that’s a lie, I’ve read The Outsiders twice, maybe that’s my comfort book? I did really enjoy the book and I liked the movie too.

Comfort Game: Far Cry 5, I really love hanging out in the game. Fishing, sitting in a vehicle listening to music, just being in the world is oddly relaxing haha. A runner-up though is definitely The Long Dark, especially during the cold months. I love the double immersion of playing a winter apocalypse game when it’s actually cold. It’s so cozy haha

i answered a few for roxie already, but i’m gonna answer the rest of them for her as well! and then i’m gonna do this for alva as well because i’m shameless ROXIE:

it feels really easy to say jessica jones here, just because i use krysten ritter as her fc, so i’m not gonna do that officially. but i’d honestly say...any kind of character who gets saddled with the “chosen one” kind of title. like, the deputy is kind of part of a prophecy, if you believe what joseph says, so i’d associate her with anyone in a position where they’re kind of saddled with needing to save everyone when they absolutely Did Not Ask For This (ie: buffy) maybe also a bit of leon kennedy.........like.......she was just trying to be a cop, y’know? and now there’s zombies angels! 

4. Archetype/character trope

i took a jungian archetype quiz for her when i was writing up her huge oc profile post, and, hilariously, got the “hero/champion” archetype for her, so she’s saddled with that whether she likes it or not. sorry, rox. 

6. Emotion

 devotion is. really what keeps her going through both games. no matter how awful it gets and how much she wants to give up or let go or run or hide or even just throw herself into danger, she keeps going for her friends, for the people counting on her, for the...family that she’s forged. and then, even on the other side of the bunker, that’s still what keeps her going. it’s stronger than anything else.

regeneration, if only to explain away how quickly the deputy can bounce back from injuries :’)

she really likes birds of all sorts (which made me wig out quite a bit when i saw john’s church makeover in fall’s end fghfhdgf). it kinda feels only right to say a rook, y’know?

“to noise making (sing)” by hozier is a song that i associate with her pretty easily, but if we’re going to go deeper, then “two” by sleeping at last is also really appropriate for her as well!

Fictional character

hmmmmmmmmmm she does share a bit of jester lavorre’s “put on a happy face” brand of self-sacrificing positivity, but alva has a considerable amount more life experience, so her version of it is a choice she makes, with a full understanding of how it isn’t always the healthiest approach to things. also...just because i use annie murphy as her fc, there’s some alexis rose no doubt floating around as well. (”ew, brekkar!”)

Archetype/character trope

she’s an ENFP (”the campaigner”), according to the quiz i took for her. she’s got a lot of those traits (curious, enthusiastic, supportive, impractical, not so hot with the focus-based stuff, overly emotional, etc.) so that works for me!! 

Season

spring! it’s associated with flowers blossoming and baby animals and sunny, temperate days, and warm breezes, and she’s into all of that, of course, but it’s also very changeable, and can sometimes come with nasty storms. but the good days always put a smile on your face, after the rain. 

Emotion

yearning. there’s a lot of hunger behind her bright smiles, and not all of it is for the things you’d imagine!

Super power

flight!!! as an air genasi, alva can levitate for funsies (once per long rest). being able to fly is the next best step up from that, and something she’d absolutely love to be able to do. (like, captain marvel style flying, not sprouting wings and flying around...even though that’s aesthetically really cool too) in her current campaign, she can’t do the levitate thing, which only makes her want to fly even more!

Okay, so... full disclosure - I haven’t done 5 different things in the last year. But in the spirit of the tag, I will (briefly) discuss the three that I have:

1) ‘I Need to Tell You’, my FC5 no-cult AU based on the ‘90s movie ‘While You Were Sleeping’: I still don’t know why this movie popped into my head like it did. I mean, I’ve always enjoyed it, but there’s no logical reason why my brain should have latched onto it.  ::shrugs::  And especially b/c I’m waaaaaay behind in updating my other two fics (FC5 & FO4) - for all intents & purposes, I never should have started a third fic. But, my brain wouldn’t stop bugging me about it, and I had hit a dry spell w/ my other writing (lots of stuff going on in my life & it’s not always easy to juggle everything), so I figured I might as well write something while I was somewhat passionate/enthusiastic about it. Now... granted - very few people have read this one (it feels like) and only one person regularly comments on it. I’m sure it’s not everyone’s cup of tea, especially since it’s based on a ‘90s movie that I doubt is that popular anyway, and I’m hardly the most popular person in this fandom w/ my OC & my writing to begin with. BUT... I am still having fun writing it. So despite my general unpopularity and lack of response/feedback, save for a very select few (not a dig, just speaking the truth), I’m gonna keep writing it... for me, if nothing else. ...And my one commenter, LOL.  ;-)  <3

2) ‘A Christmas (Eve) to Remember’, a late 'Secret Santa' gift for @teamhawkeye​: ...It’s unfortunately a normal thing for me to torture myself w/ my writing, either by doing a stupid amount of background research on something in the fic (to the point when I’m almost cross-eyed), or by over-analyzing my writing to the point that I can barely think straight (Is that the best word choice? Could I phrase that sentence better? More description? Too wordy? Not wordy enough? Etc) When I’m writing something for someone else, however, it becomes even WORSE. I almost drove myself nuts with this one. And not for lack of trying, but I don’t even think it’s that fantastic. ...I really did try, but... sometimes you either have it, or you don’t, lol. I’m like the guitar player in the subway that people pretend not to see, and they might get an occasional ‘pity dollar’ or two, LOL! ANYWAY, this was just a little blurb about John and @teamhawkeye​‘s Dep OC Anna Bishop giving each other little presents for Christmas. ...Like I said, nothing overwhelming, just something I put effort into for a wonderful, amazing lady who has and continues to inspire me in my writing and otherwise all the time. She has always been nothing but kind to me, and I feel very blessed that I’ve had the chance to know her & to write even a little for her wonderful, amazing character Anna.  <3

3) ‘The Book of John’, my Far Cry 5 fic: ...Dear oh dear. ...As I’m always saying, I have not abandoned this, nor my FO4 fic (over a year since that one’s last update). And by the time I do update either one of these, I’m sure no one will care anymore. Such is the way with fandom fanfic. We do it first and foremost b/c we love the fandom/want to tell a story, but of course we want other people to like/support it too. And when the fandom gets older/slowly fades away, so do most of its hardcore fans, and people read their stories less (seems that way, anyway). I DO absolutely want to tell Deputy Sarah Rook’s story, even if no one really cares about it/her. I don’t want all these years of working on my writing to have been for nothing - even if they are kind of for nothing. I have a whole story outlined for my personal FC5 story canon, and one way or another I will share it at some point. ..... (sighs) .....I dunno.....
