The first OVA for MP100 has really interesting connotations in terms of what Reigen actually knows about Mob’s experiences. Reigen’s the one who’s narrating the recap, so we can assume the perspective and the things he mentions are solely based on his own understanding of the situation.

Obviously the nature of a recap episode is that not every detail can be included, and I recognize that I might be applying meaning to what may just be limitations of the form, but it’s fun to speculate about the meeting of meaning and execution, so why not, right?

When Reigen is describing the events of season 1, he completely skips over Teruki strangling Mob. If it’s meant to be a recap for the audience, the strangling was maybe the most important thing to happen in the whole fight other than the ???% explosion. It’s where Teruki’s worldview starts to break down, it’s a moment where Teruki’s desperation causes him to betray his own moral boundaries (“What am I doing???”), and it’s where we first learn about Mob hurting Ritsu—the inciting incident for quite literally every single thing that happens in the entire plot of Mob Psycho 100. But not only does Reigen not mention those at all, they also don’t show any footage of it happening. It skips directly from the knives to Mob’s ???% explosion.

In the scene that happens in S1E6, where Mob asks Reigen about what qualifies as self defense, Mob mentions balding Teruki, shredding his clothes, destroying his school, and throwing him up in the air, but he doesn’t mention Teruki strangling him to Reigen. Ever.

Mob also never tells Reigen about the incident where he hurt his brother with his ???% explosion as kids. He mentions to Reigen that his powers are dangerous and that he’s scared of hurting people, but his guilt compels him to never mention the specifics of the event to anyone but Ritsu. And directly because of Reigen never knowing the severity of Mob’s concerns, he underestimates Mob’s internal struggles and even trivializes them sometimes, which is why he has the whole “I didn’t know!!!!” moment in the finale. If he knew that guilt was eating Mob alive like that, he would’ve handled it better than he did, obviously.

Instead, Mob writes in that part himself, sitting alone in his bedroom, rather than transcribing what Reigen is narrating. And even when he does write about it, he chooses to say very little in detail. The audience sees the whole scene play out to fulfill the purpose of the recap, but Mob’s internal dialogue—which is reading out in his head what he’s currently writing—says (in the dub bc it’s the one I currently have downloaded for amvs lol), “When my brother, Ritsu, was little, he would get really happy whenever I showed him my powers. But, because I hadn’t learned how to control them, I ended up hurting the brother I loved so much. Because of me, Ritsu…” And from here it transitions immediately to the alley scene. He really doesn’t even say much. When a kid says they hurt their brother, the first things that come to your mind usually aren’t all that serious. It’s pretty common for siblings to hit and bite (sorry to my older sister—I was a biter 😬) and stuff sometimes, especially when young. No one would assume he was talking about pretty serious head trauma from just that.

He does, apparently, know about Mob and Teru torturing Terada via waterboarding. I’m assuming Teru told him that part. It certainly wasn’t Terada. He seems to think the torture is hilarious, though. “*in a laughing, smug voice* This poor soul was tortured and embarrassed. He was in way over his head—literally.” It kinda was, tbf.

Obviously the integrity of the story starts going straight off the rails at this point, with Reigen poorly photoshopping himself into every scene to fulfill his chuunibyou complex. I’m just going to blanket assume that everything Reigen knows about Mob’s actions in the claw division before he arrived there himself comes from a mixture of Mob’s bare-bones reporting and Teruki bragging about the details of power level and technique and stuff.

When it comes to Mob’s 100% rejection and defeating Muto, Reigen openly admits to only knowing of his existence through hearsay and that Mob doesn’t remember how he defeated him. However, for the sake of recap, the audience is shown the full scene of Mob hitting the ceiling on his counter and freaking out, so that’s another interesting dichotomy between Reigen’s understanding of the story vs. what we are shown as the audience in the recap.

And then everything after this point was witnessed by Reigen firsthand, so it’s not so much about his understanding of the situation than it is about the way he’s framing it (which is poorly).

Anyway, it’s super clear that even back in season 1, Reigen had no idea what was actually going on with Mob. And if he did, he didn’t know the ways it was affecting him, or the most heartbreaking details had been fully excluded.

tbf i do feel like his nose is big. but i don’t think that it’s necessarily a negative trait to assign it (ik that wasn’t the intention but often when we say our noses are big, we mean it in a bad. i catch myself doing it too 😔)

chan’s got a big nose but it’s so flattering on his face and matches his features perfectly. everything about his face is so round and soft and plush that the nose just… fits right in.

i guess what i mean is that it IS big, but also perfectly proportionate. and it’s a wonderful thing. personally i always smile when he calls his nose big bcs mine’s big too. and i look at him and i’m like… wow he’s so beautiful, and his nose is so beautiful too. and that makes me feel better about mine.

i hope he sees the beauty in his features. i draw too so i’ve paid attention and like yeah, felix and hyunjin have very unique features that align perfectly with beauty standards but chan’s features are so beautiful too. he’s so uniquely himself and i hope he can see himself that way because his entire aura is so incomparable. especially his smile. god… his smile is so beautiful. i kinda feel awestruck when i see him smile. have since i first saw him. every time he does serious photoshoots i’m like… wondering why they don’t make him do playful ones where he smiles super wide. like his smile is his most beautiful feature.

Pt. 4

Summary: Y/N is new in town and comes across two beautiful boys that both spark and interest in her. Which boy will she choose....

Author Note: I am new to this whole thing, and this is my first post, so be gentle. But also let me know your thoughts and if you want more? I have written so much of this but am always willing to make changes. Part 4 will have a bit more JJ, and then I think the ending will have two outcome, one with Rafe and one with JJ

Rafe’s POV:

 I stood there and watched her walk away from me, she was heartbroken and it was all my fault. I feel like my whole life crashed and my heart was left shattered on the floor, I had broken the heart of the girl who held mine so tightly and so lovingly. Seeing her cry and not being able to hold her was something out of a nightmare. Seeing her kiss JJ was the worst thing that I could’ve seen and it was something I never wished to see again but I had the feeling that I had just pushed her straight into the arms of him without even knowing. I did this, I ruined us. I just stood in place till I could no longer see her and was suddenly very aware that I had eyes on me, but I shook it off and went inside, the only thing I wanted to do right now was drink, and I will figure this out in the morning.

 I was about 8 clean whisky’s in and I was feeling the effects but I had to do anything to wash this pain away, I had to make it numb, I had to take away this hurt the only way I knew how and that was to drown it out. I sat on the couch majority of the night as countless girls came up to me trying to get their ends off but it was no use, I just wanted Y/N, and even though I had fucked it up I would not make the situation worse and no other girl here or on this planet will ever be more perfect that Y/N. But just then I saw Jen walk into the door and my blood started boiling, how dare she ruin what I had with Y/N, how fucking dare she. So my drunk self-got up and walked straight towards her, I grabbed her arm and pulled her upstairs and into one of the empty bedrooms. “What the fuck do you want Rafe?” she said but she protested the whole way up the stairs. “What fucking game are you playing at Jen? Why would you tell Y/N about us? Do you realise what you have done?” I said now seething with anger. And the smug smile that drew across her face gave me all the information I needed. “Baby, she wasn’t right for you, you know we are meant to be. So I just helped that along. It’s you and me baby” she said and tried to kiss you but you pushed her off, lightly. “Don’t touch me Jen, the sight of you actually makes me sick. You have taken from me the only girl I have ever truly loved. But hear me now, I will get her back and you will lose, stay clear away from me and Y/N, I’m serious Jen, I don’t want to see you ever again” once I had said this I left to go downstairs.

 I stayed there for another half hour and then decided to go home, I needed to be alone, I needed to think and process everything that went down tonight. How did I manage to lose the love of my life, how did I fuck things up this bad. I just needed to be alone to figure shit out.

 Y/N’s POV:

 You spent majority of the night crying in JJ’s arms until you eventually fell asleep, you woke up the next morning with puffy eyes and a sore throat from the sobs you had cried out the previous night, but as you opened your eyes and sat up everything came flooding back and you were on the brink of crying again. You felt JJ stir awake next you and he saw you sitting up and just looking out the window, he sat up and pulled you into his chest and you loved the smell of him and the way you fit so perfectly into him, it was different to Rafe, and you liked it. Truth is, if Rafe wasn’t in the picture you would be with JJ, there was always something about him, you two just had a beautiful bond. But Rafe was in the picture and he was a massive part of it. He drew you out of your thoughts, “Morning gorgeous, how are you feeling after last night, I know what happened was far from what you wanted but I am here to listen or sit in silence, always” he said softly. “Thank you JJ, I just want to let you know how much I appreciate you, I mean you have always been there for me and I can never thank you enough” you said back to him, barely audible from him to hear. “Y/N” he said as he grabbed you face to make you look at him. “This might not be the best time to tell you but I know if I don’t do it now I never will” he said and brushed a stray hair away from your face and behind your ear, he admired your beauty so much and you could see that in his eyes.

 “Y/N, do you know how in love with you I am, more than just my best friend. You are everything, you are funny, smart, beautiful and so full of life. God your laugh alone could make anyone smile, I love the person you are and how you treat other people, and I want to give you the absolute world. I know your heart lies with someone else and I never expect anything from this but I had to tell you. I can’t live anymore with this, I understand if you want to leave and not talk to me again because my timing is absolutely horrendous but yea there it is” he said and he was nervous about it and you could tell because he couldn’t even look you in the eyes. You were silent, processing everything and JJ didn’t know what to think, had he completely fucked this up. “Fuck, Y/N, I am so sorry, I am so selfish. I should of thought about your feelings” you had to stop his rambling so you kissed him and he was shocked at first but soon melted into you and you two connected like lost souls. You pulled away eventually taken back by this kiss, this time it wasn’t forced it was naturally and you couldn’t help but feel butterflies. “JJ, I agree that your timing is very off, but thank you for telling me. I can’t lie and tell you I don’t feel something for you because I do and I would love nothing more the give you what you want, but I need to sort this thing out with Rafe or more like end this thing off with Rafe, and I could never ask you to wait for me because that isn’t fair, but I just need time” you said to him, now you’re the nervous one. “Y/N, I would wait many lifetimes for you, I’ve waited this long, I can wait a bit longer” he said now smiling and laid a small kiss to your forehead and you were warmed by the sweet jester. JJ got up to make you coffee and you switched your phone off having switched it off last night because you wanted no contact from Rafe whatsoever but you had to face the music eventually and you thought ripping off the band aid sooner rather than later would be better. 

 Your phone switched on and were flooded with missed calls from Rafe and messages and your heart broke all over again and you couldn’t help the tears falling, after all this boy had completely shattered you. You opened his chat

You decided to call him, you had to end this and at most hear him out, even though he didn’t deserve it, this boy knew everything about you, he held your heart and you held his. JJ walked in the room with your coffee and took one look at your tear stricken face and went into a panic, “Y/N are you okay? What happened?” he asked very worried. “No, nothing happened, just Rafe. Uhm thank you for the coffee, would you mind giving me a second? I just need to make a call” you asked him and he nodded and left the room.

With shaky hands you picked up your phone and clicked on the name you had called countless times before, except this heart, was with a broken heart. You pulled the phone to you ear and you didn’t even have time to process what to say and he picked up the phone so quickly, “Y/N, I didn’t expect to hear from you” he said and you could hear the cracks in his voice, he had been crying and that broke your heart. “I wasn’t going to call but, we need to talk. Meet me at the end of the pier in 30 minutes” you said and didn’t give him any time to respond before you hung up because you knew hearing his voice again would send you into another crying spell.

You got up to go find JJ and found him sitting on the couch in anticipation, he got up the minute you walked in “Hey beautiful girl, what’s going on” he said pulling you into his chest. You loved him, but you loved Rafe more, but you and Rafe were on your way to end and maybe there was hope for you and JJ. “JJ, I am going to see Rafe, I need to sort my head out” his face dropped at what you said but he understood. “I will come back right after” you said to him and went to go get dressed. You realised you had no clean clothes at JJ, so you threw on a pair of his sweatpants and one of his hoodies and you took in the smell of him and couldn’t help thinking that JJ would never hurt you like this. You mentally prepared yourself for seeing him, that same face you had woken up to in an absolute bliss many times but this time it was different, this time it was to end it. You didn’t bother with makeup as you knew you would probably end up crying so what was the point.  You walked out ready to leave and JJ stopped you, “First off you look so good in my clothes, and second off no matter what happens I will always be here for you” he said and with that he kissed you, a soft gentle kiss and you smiled, he was so special.

You got to the pier a little earlier so you didn’t have to walk up on Rafe, you got to the end and sat down letting your feet dangle down. You just sat their taking in your surroundings and preparing yourself. You were there for a few minutes and then you heard footsteps behind you and you knew who is was, but you didn’t turn around, you just stayed there. He sat down next to you and you knew it was him, from his smell and when his knee grazed yours. You looked at him and he looked at you and you looked at the same piercing eyes you fell in love with, except this time all you could see in his eyes was hurt. His eyes were puffy and red and you knew had been crying, fresh tear stained cheeks showed that he had cried on the way here.

“Y/N” he said with a shaky voice. And that alone sent you into tears, he tried to pull you into him but you pushed him away. “Please don’t Rafe” you said softly, and it broke him. He just wanted to hold you and tell you everything would be okay. He hates that he broke your heart, he hates that he can’t be the one to comfort you. He looked you up and down and realised that those were not your clothes. “Y/N, where do you stay last night?” he said this time a little more angry. “I stayed at JJ” you said. And this visible made Rafe upset, which he had no right to be at all. “I take his those are his clothes? We have now fight and you run and fuck someone else?” he was now standing and raising his voice. “What the fuck is wrong with you Rafe? You really think that fucking low of me?” you stood up now looking at him. “Well Y/N what do you expect me to think? You kiss him at a party and then go and stay at his house? And now you are wearing his clothes? I mean come on Y/N do you think I am fucking blind?” he was yelling still. “Rafe, don’t you fucking dare ever accuse me of shit. Yes I kissed JJ, that is it, when I went home, I cried the entire fucking night because of you. You are your dick, that you could not keep to yourself” you snared back at him. “You fucked this up Rafe and what I do from here on out has fuckall to do with you. You broke me Rafe, you fucking broke my heart. So you do not get to stand there and accuse me of anything. I loved you wholeheartedly, not once did I stray. But you did.” You were now crying. “So you didn’t sleep with him?” he questioned, now lowering his voice. “No Rafe, and if I did, it no longer concerns you who I sleep with anymore. We are finished” you said back and his face dropped, has he really just lost you. He didn’t come here to fight with you he came to win you back and he has just fucked it up more. “I am done with this, goodbye Rafe”, you said and started walking away when he grabbed your wrist and pulled you into him. His lips crashed to yours and you tried to push away but his strength overpowered you. His taste was so familiar and you fell into the kiss, you two moved together to knowingly, he was familiar and you liked that but no, this can’t happen. You finally pushed him away. “No Rafe, you don’t get to do that anymore” you said.

“Y/N, I cannot lose you. I am sorry I jumped to conclusions but I was so angry, not with you but myself and I took it out on you and that’s not right. Look what I came to say is I fucked up, big time. You are the only one for me, and you always will be. There is no one else for me. What I did was wrong, but back then I didn’t know where we would go. I had no idea you would become so special to me and I will spend my whole life regretting what I did. Seeing you hurt and broken kills me, it absolutely tears me apart. You are my world Y/N. Seeing you kiss JJ, was like an arrow to the heart, it was the lowest point of my life. I can’t lose you, I can’t, you are my rock. Please, give me a chance to make this right. Let me fix this, please I will never forgive myself if I didn’t try. Please.” He said and now he was crying, practically begging you. Your heart broke seeing him cry, you loved him, with every fibre of your being.

“Rafe, what you did was the worst thing you could do to me, you broke my heart and my trust and I don’t know if I can forgive that. But I also know I will hate myself if I didn’t see this through. I love you Rafe and I always will, but I need time and I need space. I am not saying we are together but I am not saying this is the end. But for right now I want a break. I need to sort my head out. I do not know what the future holds for us but for right now Rafe, please leave me alone” You said now crying too and he nodded. “Y/N, I love you and I will do anything to make this right” he let go of your wrist. “Goodbye Rafe” you said walking away. “Goodbye my beautiful girl”. You walked home as the pier wasn’t too far from where you stayed and you went over the conversation, you wanted nothing more than to forgive him and be with him and let him hold you but you just couldn’t forgive what he did at least not anytime soon.

Rafe’s POV:

I can’t believe I fucked it up more, I had her, I had the girl of my dreams and I ruined it and when I wanted to fix it I only accused her of the thing I had done that had put us in this situation. He had the chance to fix it and feels that he might have pushed you further into the hands of someone else. He hated himself for what he did to you, all he wanted to do was protect you, but he never thought you were the one she would need protecting from. I just couldn’t help it, seeing her in his clothes made my blood boil because I immediately thought the worst the thought of someone else touching my girl was a thought I could never process. I loved her and I had to win her back but I also had to respect her decision and I had to stay away no matter how much it killed me. Watching her walk away made it seem like she was walking away from us and that killed me but she said this isn’t the end so I have to hold onto that hope because if I don’t I will completely fall apart.

I just do not think I will be able to stay away from her, I am drawn to her and it does not help that she lives so close to me in such close reach of me. I just somehow have this feeling she won’t be around much anymore and I have no one to blame but myself.

Y/N’s POV:

I eventually got back to JJ’s and he was sitting on the edge of the couch, as if he was lost in thought. He heard you come up and immediately stood up, he looked so worried and so caring, why couldn’t I have chosen JJ, would I be going through all of this if I had just chosen him. He came out of you pulling you out of thought and pulled you into a hug, “Hey gorgeous, how was it?” he asked you. “He accused me of sleeping with you and then asked for me back saying he will do anything to fix us” you said and you felt JJ tense up. “Uhm, why would he think that?” he asked questionable, “Because I had your clothes on and kissed you at the party” you huffed. Little did you know JJ would love nothing more than to be that close with you but he would never push it, it would have to be your decision. “Oh, well, I would probably also beg for you back, cause to lose you would be for my world to crash around me” he gave a nervous giggle. You smiled and looked up at him in such admiration, he was so perfect, the way his blonde hair fell so perfectly and how his blue yes caught the sunlight just right. He was so beautiful inside and out. He looked down at you and gave you a small smile, he pushed a stray hair behind your ear and let his hand just stay there for a while and you leant your face into his hand and closed your eyes, just enjoying being held by him. Without saying anything you kissed him, it just felt right, not forced but just perfect. He was shocked at first but very quickly kissed you back you pulled you up by your ass and your legs almost instinctively wrapped around his waist as he took you to the couch, he laid you down so softly never breaking apart your lips and he wanted this to last forever.

You was towering over you but as much as he wanted this, he didn’t want to do something you would regret because that would kill him. He wanted you but he wanted you to also want him, not as a revenge plan or because you are hurt but because you wanted to. He pulled away and searched your eyes but all he saw was confusion, he sat down next you and you followed him by sitting up also. “JJ, are you okay, what’s wrong?” you asked grabbing his hand and placing it in your lap. “Do you not want me?” you questioned more hurt this time, He saw this and grabbed your face, “No baby, no. I want this more than anything, but I want you to want this. I don’t want you to do something you regret, this has to be something you want” he said and you understood where he was coming from. You straddled his lap and his landing on your hips. “JJ, I wouldn’t be here if I didn’t want this, and I know the situation that led us here isn’t how it should of gone but we are here now. JJ, I would never regret anything with you, I want to be here in this moment with you” you say to him and a small smile appears on his face and he is just the most beautiful man. “Please, be in this moment with me” you asked him shyly looking down, you pulled your chin up to look at him, “You are everything to me Y/N” he said and with that he kissed you and your hands snaked to his hair and his hands squeezed your hips. He picked you up and carried you to his bedroom where he laid you down on the bed, he kissed you ago and pulled the hoodie over your head and was very surprised to see you had no bra on, he just stood and stared at you, admired you, god you were perfect in his eyes and he wanted to show you, he slid the sweatpants down your legs and revealed you were wearing a white lace thong. You got to the counter to pay but JJ offered to pay “Let me pay considering it is my doing” he whispered and you giggled.

He paid and you two left but as you got outside JJ pulled you into a kiss, “You are so special Y/N, how did I get this lucky” he said smiling, “Slow down the Maybank, let’s take this slow” you said, and you knew you still had unfinished business with Rafe but now there was JJ. What are you supposed to do.

Someone cleared their throat behind you and you turned around and were met with the eyes of the one person you did not want to see, Rafe. He took one look at you holding JJ’s and in the other hand you were holding plan B and it didn’t take a rocket scientist to put it together, you two had sex and Rafe broke inside. “Y/N, what the fuck is going on” he questioned, but he wasn’t angry he was hurt and you couldn’t even look at him.

As promised here’s my long Brettsey post, because Chicago Fire pulled me back in despite my hesitancy. 

Okay, to start with, I’m probably somewhat delusional, but that didn’t feel like an open-ended storyline nor closure. It felt like an opening for either a recurring role for Jesse next season or a Kara exit. 

They had two chances to give Brettsey closure. At the end of season 10 at the Stellaride wedding and this last episode. Neither happened. Everyone was worried they’d have Matt say that he was happy for Sylvie in her new “serious relationship”. And that he was happy in Portland. Which was totally implied in the season 10 finale. Either they threw that in for the drama of it all or the writers now know something they didn’t know at the time. 

Thinking back to Jesse’s exit interviews and Haas talking about the long distance problems and obstacles, it feels like this was maybe somewhat planned out. Outside of the little things like Sylvie losing her phone for a bit in an episode and her and Matt not being able to catch each other at the right time, there weren’t very many obstacles for them in season 10. She went to visit him twice and only when she came back the second time did the problems start to show. Then they broke up in the season 11 premiere. And honestly what main Fire couple hasn’t broken up at least once for the drama? Brettsey’s was different because Jesse left right after they got together. Also, as the anon brought up earlier, Jesse even said he’d pop in once Sylvie got in a new relationship and look what happened, lmao. 

Now to the episode itself. Despite how sad the ending was, it gave me more hope than 10x05 did. Which, tbf, while I was more than happy they decided to try the long distance thing, I knew it’d be unlikely to be successful in the long run. They could have used this opportunity to give Brettsey real closure like Haas was trying to do in 9x15 for D@wsey. He just couldn’t get Monica back so he had to improvise by having Matt say he wasn’t in love with her anymore after the phone call. That they weren’t in love with each other anymore. Matt all but admitted he couldn’t move on because he was still in love with Sylvie to Stella.  That’s a big parallel to season 9 when he said being with other people makes it worse. He didn’t have that problem when he hooked up with the reporter after his divorce. Why go this route if there’s no plan to get them back together? I mean I know the Fire writers are cruel but they’re not stupid. Or that stupid anyway. And Sylvie? Poor Sylvie. I think they captured it perfectly. She thought she was moving on until she saw Matt again. Then after the hug? That was it. She knew she wasn’t over him. Showing her crying? Weirdly enough gave me hope. This is all leading somewhere because the easiest thing would have been to give them closure. 

This is leading to one of two things, I think. Matt coming back via a recurring role for Jesse. Which seems like the more likely scenario considering the other hints we got with Matt telling Boden that Chicago was home and that a few things had to fall in place to come back, etc. Plus Jesse talking about wanting to come back for appearances but not full time. They could easily have him in a handful of episodes and make it work. Second thing would be a Kara exit. Yes, they’ve written it as she didn’t want to leave for another guy and Chicago is her home. But Matt isn’t just a guy. He’s the love of her life (thank you Wolf Entertainment Twitter for admitting that) and she’s obviously not happy without him. They could have her expand paramedicine out to Portland and become a paramedic out there. She wouldn’t be giving up her career and life for someone else. She’d just be changing location. But this really does feel like more of a set up for a Matt comeback on a part time basis. 

Anyway, I’m preparing to be a clown about all of this.

MAG 111 Relisten

Activity on my first listen: putting up a new fence

I think this actually might be my absolute favorite episode... Also, I always considered this episode to be a "Schlüssel Episode" because it unlocks (heh) so many mysteries, answers so many questions! It took me way too long to make the connection... Schlüssel means key. Keay... (I wonder if this was intentional and planned, or a very happy coincidence. Having graduated from an art high school I know these coincidences actually happen a lot!)

Yeah, le me, who couldn't pay attention to the statement in MAG 4 or MAG 62 in detail still had no idea what was happening when Jon and the Hunters talked about the book. It only clicked when I heard Jon read Gerry's death.

JON: "She was there sometimes, the one he had followed around the world. There was almost sadness in her eyes." Not even Gertrude was immune to Gerry's charm :) God, why is he so perfect...

Okay, so some thoughts on Gerry's appearance! I know there is a discussion about him potentially looking like he did when he died, so in a hospital gown, possibly with a shaven head, no piercings etc. While that would be a look that fits the tragedy theme of TMA, I don't think that is the case. I think it works like in The Matrix. "Residual self-image". The appearance of the summoned dead will look like the mental projection of their ghost self. Now why do I come to this conclusion. Simple. MAG 154. Gertrude did not notice anything when she spoke with book!Eric. She did not suspect that he blinded himself. His mental projection probably looked like he did, when he worked for Gertrude - without damaged eyes. Why did Mary look so different though? Gerry says in this episode, that the ritual of binding herself to the book was only half finished and left her damaged. Probably that's why she has Sanskrit all over her. There's a novel by the German author Cornelia Funke, Inkheart. In this book the protagonist (and a few others) can bring book characters to life by reading them. When such a person wasn't skilled enough at reading them to life, the characters came to life damaged. In the film version they had this effect, that these characters will still have residual text all over their body.

Why did Gerry ask Jon for a cigarette? Is he just the typical goth who smokes and asks everyone and eventually he'll find one or did Jon have a package somehow sticking out of a pocket? Either way... The Web's addiction got them to talk.

GERRY: "Nice lighter. You a spider freak, then?" JON: "What? Oh! Er, no. I-I never really, uh… I never really thought of it." That slippery little thing...

GERRY: "Good. Don’t think she would have wanted that. God, I can’t imagine her dying in bed." The way he says that makes me believe he did care for her.

GERRY: "Yeah, the world changes in horrible ways. For you. I’m a book." JON: "You can’t be serious." GERRY: "I’m dead serious." Such. A. Mood.

JON: "Just one. How do I stop the Unknowing?” GERRY: [Casually] "Nah, I don’t know." JON: [Incensed] "What?!" Lmao! Also their dynamic is sooo good!

The voice actor is so perfect. That audible edginess!

GERRY: "Huh. Do you like it*?" JON: "I-I don’t know. I never really thought about it. Yes, I… I suppose I do." (*the compulsion ability) That's why he's the perfect candidate. Tbf it seems like quite a handy ability...

GERRY: "Not when I was with her. She travelled light. Left things behind." Saying: Left me behind and I didn't think she would do that...

GERRY: "Thing is, it’s harder than it looks. What’s out there… doesn’t care about blood." JON: "Well, I-I mean, except for the vampires…" GERRY: "Yeah, obviously except for the vampires." Pffft...

GERRY: "But they care about your choices, your fears, not your parents. Families are just useful ‘cause they can push you in the right direction. And the Lukases are very good at that." This sentence means so much in regards to Jon and Martin. It's about the choices... I mean we absolutely know that a lot about Jon's story was about choices. But that bit about the Lukases being good at pushing people in the right direction? Just think about Peter and Martin...

JON: "And I imagine they’re not… reluctant to remove any members that might put that legacy at risk." Throwback to MAG 13...

JON: "Er… Statement of Gerard Keay, deceased, regarding the death of his mother, Mary Keay." He does it there, the Knowing of what the statement will be about. Gerry did not specify, that it would be about her death...

GERRY: "I never knew my dad. Not really. He worked in the Archives like you, but quit once I was born." ADFHDFKLFHG!!!! Worked in the Archives?! QUIT?! I didn't catch that when I was first listening, but when I listened to this episode again, it struck me! This was the reason why I looked up the discussion thread of MAG 111 in the TMA sub (like I said in the last episode). I wanted to know what people said about this when the episode came out, what theories people would weave. Turns out... nothing! I couldn't find a single comment talking about this! WTF?

GERRY: "so she killed him in his sleep to practice her bookbinding. I guess she failed. I always thought he was in here, but when I eventually got hold of it, there wasn’t a page in there." I wonder if Gertrude ever thought about telling him. I mean, in the end it made no difference. She had burned the page years ago.

You know what? Writing down that last bullet point made me think. The characters in TMA have so much depth. They are exceptionally well written and perfectly portrayed by their voice actors. They feel so real. It's kind of daft to wonder "Oh, did that character ever think about blabla" because they are not real people! Of course they didn't, they don't exist. But because they have so much depth, they feel like actual people and that's why these questions pop into my mind.

GERRY: " The best you could hope for from them, would be that they don’t spot you, and instead my mum chased after them, obsessed with others who had tried to stare at them without being blinded: y’know, Flamsteed, Smirke, Leitner." Second time the name Flamsteed was casually thrown around...

GERRY: "Idiots who destroyed themselves chasing a secret that wasn’t worth knowing. And the worst thing was, she marked me as a part of that, without my understanding. Or consent." Is this meant to be about Mary bringing him into these circles who were close to horrible things or him being Eye-aligned?

GERRY: "I think… I think I finally understand why she brought me back. I just don’t understand why she left me behind." I heard the idea of Gertrude's intention, that she thought binding him would prevent Gerry from rising as an Avatar. But is being a book so much better?

The famous color analogy! It works so perfectly though, some colors being similar, some clashing with each other... But all part of the spectrum.

GERRY: "I mean, you could see them all as just one thing," Ah yes, the thing Leitner and Gerry have in common. Foreshadowing of the Fears being one thing after all!

GERRY: "No. There aren’t any god-like powers of hope, or love, or indigestion, or whatever. At least not that I’ve seen. Just fear. I don’t know why." And still they work to use them to escape. Thinking of a beloved person will ground you, make you feel less fear and the Fears will leave you alone, when they are not getting anything out of you. Same with hope, that statement-giver in MAG 66, seeing a small shimmer of light or the ability to slightly move as hope and not to give up on it instead of surrendering themself to the despair of never quite reaching an escape.

GERRY: "Some say, or well, they guess, that it could bring other entities through with them." Again, foreshadowing!

JON: "And if one of the rituals succeeds?" GERRY: "The world becomes a factory farm." And that is why I wear a Fear Factory bandshirt for my Gerry cosplay.

JON: "Why would anyone want that? I-I mean, there are people, or they used to be people, who are trying to do this. Why?" Capitalism analogy? A handful of people are alright with dooming the world just for more money, more power...

GERRY: "Uh, the Rite of the Watcher’s Crown. It’s what she called the ritual for the Eye. She didn’t tell me much about that one, just that she knew how to take care of it." This kinda sounds like the Watcher's Crown is the upcoming ritual of the Eye. But isn't there a discussion, that the Watcher's Crown was Jonah's prison ritual? I mean, Jonah talks about being a king of a ruined world in MAG 160. So the crown symbolism would fit.

I love how the whole fandom immediately went with Gerry's wish and just calls him by his nickname.

Maybe it’s just me but I didn’t feel like his comment was rude? It was true that Max wasn’t at his best and did get beaten by Checo. I don’t think it was the time to bring it up or the Checo aspect was necessary but I think he may have said it without considering it could be seen as a dig. The way he phrased it sounds like something that a radio host would say and he could’ve been simply repeating it bc he doesn’t know much about F1.

Also I feel like she may be intentionally (or Unintentionally) sabotaging her thing with Elliott rn because that was kind of an extreme take when the guy hasn’t said anything crazy yet. I’m wondering if she’s worried that he leaked stuff to the media about them and that’s why she’s touchy rn bc she thinks he ruined her privacy for clout.

They’ve had what like two dates? and he supposedly already told his friends a ton about her and her relationship with Max and stuff. That seems like a lot to say this early in and even if by some chance he did say all that and one of his friends leaked it that’s also bad. Because it means he told someone who he knew would be willing to leak stuff (we all know which of our friends gossip more than others) and it means he kinda talked down on Max.

It’s really a lose lose for him and I could see this being the beginning of end for them. If they somehow make it through this I don’t see them passing Max’s birthday though (because Elliott will want to come and that’s a horrible idea or the gift thing will bother him or he’ll fuck up beforehand)

Ummm, I half agree with you about the comment. I think it was the context that made it a bit spicy. Elliot was talking about something he doesn’t know about, and a person he doesn’t know. And he was saying it to someone who knows both really well. I don’t think his comment was inherently rude but I think it came off a bit ignorant, like he’s doing the thing that people do where they think the quickest way to sound knowledgeable about something is to be negative about it. Yes, RB did have a bad day but I think for him to specifically say Max wasn’t at his best when in reality the car was the problem (obviously Max had a part to play but I feel like you can give Max the benefit of the doubt that the floor changes and balance problems hindered him significantly) really showed Elliot’s total lack of understanding and how comfortable he was with it. Like, I agree it wasn’t rude but it was definitely a bit of a bold thing to bring up in the way he did. I just feel like Elliot is not used to having to read the room.

I don’t think she’s too worried about the leaks tbh. Maybe she should be more worried, but I think she is kind of like, Elliot isn’t used to this, he’s never had to weed out sneaky people in his circle, so fair enough he would know someone who would leak the info, he’s had no reason to worry about it until now. I think she would probably be a bit icked out by the fact that the rumour made it sound like they were super serious more than she’s worried that a leak happened at all. Tbf to him, I would say the confidence about not being threatened is the right attitude to have if you’re seeing a girl who has a guy best friend. You have to trust that she’s with you for a reason and just get on with doing your thing.

Elliot is a smart and very charming guy though, he’s down but he’s not out ;)

your mention of billzo at the end of your recent alliumduo analysis piqued my interest if only because i remember when tomzo was a popular ship and tbf, there was a time when the two seemed to get along. that's not exactly the case anymore, and at first glance, it kind of seems like they just started to clash over who would get to occupy the majority of ranboo's time (& ranboo's focus seemed to shift from bill to tommy very recently) but i was wondering if you had more insight on why they clash

I can see why it felt like a good idea, a bit of paring the spares between the one who was the most flagrantly out of all of their friends with the man who was the token straight. High contrast couples, usually a fun time.

I think it was a situation where conflict led to more conflict, and now their friendship is characterised by too much aggression to walk it back to what it was before. I wasn’t around to know if we would have seen their original scuffles on camera, but Billzo is a very passive-aggressive guy who believes in revenge, and Tommy is a world champion toe-stepper. I remember hearing a story of Billzo locking him out of the house and throwing away the key because Tommy was making unreasonable sleeping arrangement demands. There’s also the recent Amsterdam story where Tommy went goblin mode trying to steal Billzo’s pants. There don’t seem to be any brakes between them when they start setting each other off, and I think it goes a little bit deeper than either of them has the self-awareness to fully recognise right now.

Tommy isn’t that bad with serious conflict, he has the skills to handle it if he’s in the right frame of mind, but he has to actually know the score first, which means he’s doomed if he’s interacting with someone who won’t directly communicate. Compared to the baseline of Ranboo, Billzo can get a lot more vindictive if he’s provoked, and Tommy seems to have the secret formula for setting him off. A big part of what makes Billzo so scrappy is his version of ‘bringing people back down to earth’ when he feels like something is out of whack, and Tommy has more than a bit of diva in him to get Bill worked up.

I think they still like each other well enough, but it’s one of those aggressive friendships that flies under the flag of banter even if it starts to get out of hand. Because they both feel like they should be able to handle whatever aggression comes up between them in the form of play-fighting, their ability to communicate and solve larger problems might be a bit stunted.

Are they two scrappy people fighting for Ranboo’s big, tall, kind attention? Well, they seem to fight over a lot of other things, so it may as well be on the list.

R was on the George Lucas podcast on Oscars night and revealed she has the same agent as Brendan Fraser and Cillian Murphy!!! damn crazy, that man should get back to work and get R some meaty scripts ASAP. This girl should be booked and busy

Also, this isn't hate to R by any means but I felt kinda bad when they asked to name which of her friends she could envision winning an Oscar soon and girl said Elordi (🙁) and Dominic Sessa..??? Since when she's close to Sessa? lmao maybe cause they're both Jersey kids lol anyways I know R doesn't own T anything but she was so complementary of him months ago, especially as an actor so it kinda feels like she's deliberately choosing to not mention him at all now... maybe I'm reaching because she didn't mention Mike F either. Idk it seems she took the "I will stop sharing stuff and let y'all wonder what happened between us" very seriously, do we really drove her off with the shipping? 🙁 I mean this blog and the shipping wasn't serious and it's not like what we discussed here was set in stone or had any real impact on their lives.

1. Tbf her agent has an easy job with Cillian Murphy and Brendan Fraser LOL. Two recent Oscar winners. The only thing holding her back is SW and social media activity. That’s why I wish SW was releasing this year. I’m tired of Disn3y holding her hostage.

2. She said Dominic Sessa because of Jersey for sure and he was recently at the Oscar’s. Elordi for right now has more of a chance than T because he was in multiple projects last year. She went with the most obvious and “logical” answers instead of her own personal choices. If someone asked the general public their pick for future Oscar winners, most people would say T Chalmet, Paul Mescal and J Elordi I think.

Let’s think more positively :) if she went with personal choices she would have said the boar (ridiculous I know), T and Mike F!

3. I don’t think shipping drove her away tbh! At some point everyone had to know she wasn’t going to mention T every week. It may be a while before she does. I wouldn’t panic over it :)

Shipping is going to happen regardless if celebs are aware of it or not.

I think Taylor and Calvin had an NDA. I know what people say, it’s not enforceable, but I think they signed one. He may have broken it a little, but he eventually shut up. Calvin was definitely not into the relationship after their winter vacation in Jan or Feb? His opening act said they were all but done in March. He said people just change their minds sometimes when asked why. The 2nd Bahamas trip was where they made the decision for good I think. I really think he hated Swifties, some who trolled him mercilessly even before the breakup. Any cheating is relative, imo, especially if it is a break, or not official. Taylor was with Calvin before he announced Aarika and he were history. Aarika blamed Taylor for using Haim to accompany her in going to Calvin’s concert. She believed Taylor chased Calvin. This is according to Aarika’s ex roommate and best friend. Taylor did say she is a Mastermind, you know. I guess all is fair in love and whatever.

I’m not disagreeing with you on anything bar the NDA because as you correctly say that’s largely unenforceable. Source: my lawyer on all 3 of the HNWI jobs I’ve done and the on set jobs I’ve done previously. I’ve signed NDAs. I obviously wouldn’t like write a tell all about a specific thing because then I could indeed be sued for the profits from that but like the signing of the NDA means fuck all? My friend who’s gotten me the on set stuff (we know each other from when I was reporting) is a bit more hectic re her NDAs - she’s working on something now and she won’t tell me or apparently even her bf (who is my bf’s best friend - if her production design thing falls through, she should matchmake) what it is and she says like she signed an NDA and I’m like “yeah I’ve signed a dozen and so what” but like tbf my at the time best friend and I almost got sued for defamation aged 21 for fiction we were writing based on our lives and since then I’ve had a lawyer and I always ask if something I’m signing is serious or something I’m receiving is serious (OGs will remember my poor lawyer getting TTB’s psycho email on Christmas Day) and so idc.

I think if I know not to care then CH knows know not to care. Taylor would never sue him civilly for money - that’d be embarrassing. There’s no real recourse to breaking that type of NDA. If you work with patents and stuff then yes it’s very easy for you to be sued for breaking an NDA or if you go to the media with specifics then again very easy to get sued but if you sign a general NDA then there’s not terribly much that can happen to you if you break it with friends and family and stuff.

I think they just ran out of bad stuff to say about each other because absolutely it sucked at the end but like there was a lot of good there for a spell and both of them did think this was forever until they realized it wasn’t. And better they realized then than with 2 kids and a bunch of questionable CH babies from other ladies iykwim and Taylor still talking to Mattys lmao.

I feel like he would definitely infantilize that kind of darling to their face too tbh. He takes everything pretty seriously and probably can sometimes struggle to catch up to newer cultural values... like back in the Old Days(tm) when the world was in a more grave situation the adult world was serious at all times and adults probably weren’t socially allowed/it wasn’t socially acceptable to be that playful and teasing. So in his mind it’s still kinda like that... playfulness is reserved for bratty kids, and by acting that way you reduce yourself to that intellectual level in his mind. Have fun with that. Talking to you in that kind of slow, overly-clear voice you use for kids. Giving you simple tasks because no no, this would just bore you, it’s too involved, too complex, you couldn’t handle it, you need something exciting to match that... liveliness of yours.

But also just very tired zhongli and darling trying to pull some kind of prank on him just. Poor thing. This is what you get for leaving the darling alone with nothing but craft materials.

Obey Me! Brothers as Werewolves

Lucifer

Gonna remind everyone now that alpha theory was disproven and actual wolf packs act as family units

That being said - alpha, clearly

Not because he's the strongest (though he is) but because he's the most nurturing

Considers all his brothers (and you) to be his responsibility and under his care

Second biggest in wolf form (next to Beel)

Thick, dark fur, great in winter but in summer hates how hot and itchy it gets. Shedding his winter coat is an EVENT. Scratch him and fluff just falls out by the handfuls

Hates how patchy he looks when shedding, very grumpy when its happening

Refuses to ask for help when it comes to brushing out his coat, but if you're somewhere private he is very happy to just lie there whilst you brush out all that itchy loose fluff

Also just very nice to pet in general, but rarely let's you outside of softer moments :/

Not outwardly aggressive - when correcting his brothers behaviour hes more likely to just growl softly instead of going for a full snarl. If he actually shows his teeth then things are serious and you might want to have some final words with your jugular

Isn't very affectionate in public, but is very protective - wherever you go, if hes in his wolf form hes by your side, or at the very least is keeping an eye on you

If anyone he doesnt like the look of approaches you, he calmly places himself between the two of you. If that isn't enough trust me, a staring contest with those eyes isn't going to last long

Pretty boyyo

White fur thats not nearly as thick and long as Lucifer's but still has a substantial ruff

Uses his wolf form to run away from loan sharks a lot (hey, four legs are quicker than two, right?)

Also loves the attention he gets from girls - he knows he's handsome in both forms, but girls say it more when they think he can't understand them

Sheds the least of all the brothers, but since his coat is so pale his hair is more noticeable so he still gets flack for getting it on the furniture

Hes still needy as a wolf

You know those videos of huskies throwing massive tantrums??? Yeah, hes on that level, his dramatics only kept in check by his tsundere nature

Loves it when you pet him. He'll pretend he doesn't, but the second you stop hes gonna start whining

Not generally aggressive within the pack, just prickly - maybe a growl or a huff here and there, maybe a snap if someone's really pushing his buttons

When he isn't hunting he does enjoy stretching out infront of a fireplace and warming his fur

Is unopposed to being brushed when he's in the position, and may even allow you to pet his head gently, but thats it

Might lay his head in your lap tho

Still tries to control his temper in wolf form, but you better hope he maintains it because those teeth can issue you a one-way ticket to the afterlife

Sometimes snaps or growls at his brothers, but is more likely to just leave the room if they're annoying him. If they're in his room then they're getting chased out with their tail between their legs (except Lucifer who wouldn't invade his space like that)

Sometimes forgets to shift, or can't be bothered and will just wander around attempting to do people things until he realises hes in the wrong body - you ever gone to brush your teeth and then realised you need hands for that???

The most aggressive with other pack members - hes just kinda bratty. Huffs a lot and is quick to give out little nips when he isn't happy, though he isn't much of a growler and never goes farther than that

Won't play fetch like Beel, but if you're REALLY lucky, he'll bring you a plushie of your own when he joins you for a nap

Hi, I'm just curious. Were LGBT communities accepted in ancient Greece based on certain elements of Greek mythology, like some of the gods having lovers of both genders?

Disclaimers: This is a very broad summary and many cases haven't been covered, so I encourage you to search on your own. Google Scholar has many scientific papers on different subjects and I think you should take a look there. Read many papers so you get a better idea of the situation, and understand the biases of the authors.

It's generally very difficult to explain ancient concepts with the terminology we have today. If you got confused by terminology here feel free to ask what I meant. I didn't intend any harm to readers of this post. This is how some terms seem more appropriate to me as a Greek speaker.

Onto my own short answer:

Well "accepted" is a big word and very different of what most users in this site would think as "accepted". It wasn't such a serious "sin" but it was generally looked down upon, from the records we have today. (Remember, these were the societies that at large thought women shouldn't express their sexual desires if thought to even have any). At the same time it was known that such couples existed, but they couldn't get married or say this is my "life long partner" or something.

It's very possible queer couples were living happily "under the radar" or people around them looked the other way. In fact, I'd say the societies had (socially and on a superficial, formal level) crossed out queer couples so much that even if you went on a date or slept with someone "you shouldn't", it would people would think "aaah just two women having dinner in the tavern" or "two women sleeping together. Nothing can possibly happen. Women don't have sex with women anyways." Holding hands and hugging a lot between people wasn't something seen as inherently sexual, between people of the same sex (or perceived to be of the same sex). Women and men were quite segregated back then, largely working in their own domains, so lgbt+ didn't have many outsiders to judge them. The other members didn't know the ins and outs of how things worked in the opposite side of the social world, so it would be easy to fool a bunch of old women with "eh you know that's what we do in the army, you just have to sleep very close to each other!"

But given how much smaller societies were then, how little education people had, and how statistically unlikely was for someone to be queer in a village of 100 people, it would still make that person seem "odd" in most settings in "ancient Greece". I wouldn't want to try and go back at that time, to be honest with you.

In Classical Athens - and I suspect in most of cities, marriage was something done "for the good of the city" and not yours, anyways. So you could marry someone of the opposite sex because that's what the society wanted, and then chose another lover in secret.

I don't think trans folks were very "accepted", I have yet to find a text that says "this thing also happens in mythology with so and so god so we must accept it". There might have been efforts to explain things about the lgbt+ people through myths, but given that trans people are rarer than homosexuals (at least with the studies we have now) the acceptance wouldn't be bigger than this of the homosexual couples.

If trans people managed to hide their dysphoria or will to transition (something extremely difficult for many, I know) and only exhibited "opposite sex" behaviors they could still seem "odd" unfortunately. But bio women could be seen as, what we say a "tomboy" and bio men as "eh he likes doing [effeminate thing of the time] , but but he is a good lad". Of course that doesn't cover the struggle of being trans in those ancient societies, I am just saying how outsiders would perceive them. We know of some other societies around the world recognizing different genders and sexual identities as valid and celebrated, but we don't have such records from the Greek antiquity.

For people on the ace spectrum, they were affected by the fact that they were required to have sex and that's bad on its own.

Other lgbt+ (and cis and/or hetero, tbf) people also faced this struggle through the requirement of marriage to someone they weren't attracted to (and "rape" didn't even exist inside marriage for the ancient laws 😢). The city and the society didn't care much about your attraction - you were bound to the laws of your sex back then, no matter how you felt. We have mentions of lgbt+ folks and that means it wasn't all extremely bad and ominous then, but recognition doesn't necessarily mean acceptance, as "I can safely express myself".

Some people stayed single, but for women it was infinity more difficult to do such a thing.

Modern day Greece is relatively bad to be lgbt+ but still I would rather stay here than some period of the Greek antiquity.

For other identities, I don't think I can cover much.

+Please, don't bugger me about terminology, we all know it changes every five years anyway - and not even in my country most of the time. Not all of us should be bound to Anglophone and US American expressions.

Plus, being considered heterosexual (or "cis") in ancient Greece was about biological sex, and that's why I focus so much on it. And I don't want to call people "males" and "females" and that why I used bio women and bio men.

What are your top ten novels about the Wars of the Roses? And why?

I think it’s obvious by the length how enthusiastic I was to answer this ask xx thank you for asking me and giving me also an opportunity to make a masterlist of some sorts of all my reviews xx. But you know? I speak like quite the expert but in reality I’ve read very little histfic about TWOTR because I just newly got back into this hobby (about a year ago) and have little time in general so tbh the last three books on this list I do not personally care for but since I’ve read so little novels of this kind they are here nonetheless hhh (so please people, give me no angry asks asking me why I am endorsing PG, I’m not).

1. The Last of the Barons by Lord Edward Lytton-Bulwer

This is quite possibly the best book I’ve ever read in my life. The gap between these books and the rest is a chasm the size of the world and I wpuld genuinely reccomend this book as an actual piece of literature to anyone, not just TWOTR fanatics. It is written in 1840, in quite old timey lingo and it centres around Richard Neville 16th Earl of Warwick, but in the true tradition of a real classic it is more than just a character drama, it astutely showcases the purpose of Warwick and what he did in the context of his wider world and doesn’t just chalk it up to personal greed. There is also this fascinating subplot about courtship, science and such. Hell, you even get this eccentric ‘natural philosopher’ guy called Adam Warner who tries to make something like a steam engine and gets employed as an alchemist by Jacquetta and Edward IV.

From a historical standpoint it is quite biased as the author himself was a politician (and an actual baron) and tbh I don’t completely agree with his interpretation of history and I can see some of the Victorian inluences slip in, but some of his takes are very refreshing and he clearly consulted the primary sources. I am much interested in his philosophy and life outlook though and while I don’t think his Warwick is the Warwick, I think he (Lytton-Bulwer) understood him like no other novelist could. As for the writing style... here’s an excerpt of a good reads review that I agree with and tells you all you need to know:

“Of course, such a style of writing no longer exists. The language used is essentially foreign to us. But the nobility, the pride of this story work their ways into your bones, your heart. You will yearn for honor once you have left it.“

Basically, go type it into google and see what I mean. You don’t even need to purchase this book it’s all online at the first click on Gutenberg.

2. The King’s Grey Mare by Rosemary Hawley Jarman

This book (unlike the latter) has zero actual historical value. Actually, it sort of does in the way that it hilights certain real events that most people are unaware of when it comes to its protagonist: Elizabeth Woodville, eg the whole Cooke tapestry affair and the whole Desmond affair. Both things which I still stand on the fence about (if you don’t know what I’m talking about send em another ask or pm me). But like, it isn’t political, philosophical or such in any way like the first book, yet you still feel like you are *there* in the 15th century - by the time I finished reading it my heart was wrung dry and I kind of fell into a down for a couple of days because I just wanted to feel the magic again. If anyone would ask me I would give this 5 stars because it perfectly achieved what it set out to do (I can’t expect all books to go above and beyond like #1), it made me feel for the characters who were super complex, was accurate historically and even when it wasn’t it made sense, it got very creative with its themes (which I like to see because I am not interested in reading the exact same story over and over again) and the prose was absolutely magical and brought all the depth to this novel. I’ve read classics with less flowing and poignant prose, yes actual classics!

This book also switches POVs quite a lot (basically it headhops because it’s written in omniscient- but whatever, rules are meant to be broken), so you’ll get to see many of your faves in there, Edward IV, Margaret of Anjou and Grace Plantagenet feature quite heavily. One thing that disappointed me is that it wasn’t really Edward IV/Elizabeth Woodville (at the time I bought it for that), she never really likes him and his love for her kind of wanes towards the end. If you’re not too bothered about that then I say go buy it.

3. The Daisy and the Bear by K L Clark

I put this here because we are already going into shakier territory when it comes to this list. This is kind of the last *really* good, truly five star one. It is a long spoof about TWOTR but god it’s smart! Yet, It does not take itself seriously and has Margaret of Anjou/Warwick the Kingmaker as a crackship and centrepiece and had me in stitches the whole time. I’ve written a long detailed review for it here.

4. Death be Pardoner to Me by Dorothy Davies

This is a novel about George Duke of Clarence. Quite possibly the only novel ever written about him in existence and boy is it a trip - the author claims to have channelled him (she’s a medium). I’ve written a detailed review for it here. I read this last spring and my views have unfortunately changed, the thing is, I’ve come to find out through my research that this was quite possibly a hoax as there are some indisputable inaccuracies (Ankarette Twynyho’s age, the details of Isabel’s death - we *know* she did not die from childbirth, Isabel did not reunite with him after Tewksbury 1471, but right before Christmas 1470). It’s also quite Richardian (the author admitted) and she could have *had* me had she not chose to divulge it in the foreword. Nevertheless, I still like this book because it did get to me at certain points and it’s good quality as a novel, I remember shedding a tear at one point even which is extremely rare for me but I think that says more about my sentiment for the subject matter than the book itself.

5. We Speak no Treason by Rosemary Hawley Jarman (not yet finished, so ranking may vary)

I haven’t finished it yet, so I’ll leave it here for now. This book is a Richardian book about Richard III, but I can’t get enough of this author, I haven’t found anyone to replace her with. The prose is magnificent as usual and I must confess that I’m happy that this book is told through the POVs of three OCs and not Richard, he remains rather elusive and tbf I find the three OCs very interesting and at this point I’m more interested in their stories than anything else. Of course, Richard III is still a fairly prominent part of this novel (even when he doesn’t appear) and it has led to me getting annoyed quite a bit. Given who I am I fumed massively at that one aside that Clarence and Edward have bastards whereas Richard isn’t like that... like are you serious?? At one point the author reassociated the Games and Playes Chesse book to Richard when it was in reality dedicated to Clarence and I got even more annoyed. Leave the poor figure something ma’am? Whatever, as a book about three medieval commoners it’s fantastic and that’s what I pretend it is.

6. Wife to the Kingmaker by Sandra Wilson

Nothing more to add than what I wrote in my (super-long) detailed review on here. This is the case because I read it very recently. This is a novel about Anne Beauchamp 16th Countess of Warwick, it’s ranked higher than Sunne because though it’s less accurate it’s got panache.

7. The Sunne in Splendour by Sharon K Penman

I feel very strongly about this Richard III book and what it represents. I wrote a long detailed review about it on here and a follow-up post on the discussion is here ft my awesome mutual @beardofkamenev ‘s insights also thrown into the mix. Xx

8. The White Queen by Philippa Gregory

This is a step higher than the other two because this book pretty much changed my life. The thing is, I read it translated into my own language by an extremely talented translator and I was also only about 11/12 years old so it was all very impressive to me then. This book about Elizabeth Woodville effectively introduced me to the TWOTR; an interest that has never really left me these past ten years (though at one point (ages 14-19) it was quite wane). It’s not a good book by any standard (I was quite shocked when picking it up at a bookstore, I had found that when read in the original language it lost all its magic), but I owe a lot to it and some people who now endlessly discourse about how bad PG is need to recognise their debt of gratitude and be a bit more respectful, I think. That is of course unless you came into this era via different media, but you got to admit that a massive part of us got to this place through TWQ, though we outgrew it.

10. The Red Queen and The Kingmaker’s Daughter by Philippa Gregory

Exact same commentary as above, just objectively not good books. Flat characterisation, misunderstanding of the era, historical innacuracies which don’t add anything, lack of nuance in prose which often dances too close to *gasp* YA prose *shudders*. But these are lower because I don’t owe them a debt of gratitude as I do TWQ. Funnily enough, they are still better than the series.
