You heard right!
After finishing up my fanfiction novel that is Tattoos, I'm finally opening my askbox again!
Haven't been here since the last time?
No problem! In short, I open my askbox for a limited amount of time. Promising to write nearly any *bakuten shoot* beyblade prompt! Creating your own personalized ficlet (tiny fanfiction) for free!
(I still hold the ability to reject any prompts that I find uncomfortable, but I'll still try my hand at any pairing, scene, etc!)
This is your opportunity to get a scene you never got to see in the show? Or an unusual pairing? A continuation of a chapter of a fic I've done before? So many options!
I'm making this post nearly a week in advance so everyone has a chance to get those ideas flowing!
Here's a link to my archive, with examples of what I've done in the past!
Reminder* I'll only do original series beyblade, as I'm unfamiliar with anything metal fight etc.
Remember to mention in the ask if you prefer dub or sub names! (English or Japanese)
Also, any asks are accepted! You can do an anonymous ask, but if you do I can't DM you if I have questions! So you can either send the ask off anon, or message me and tell me details of your ask!
I'm REALLY looking forward to what prompts we can come up with this time!
The askbox will be open May 13th to May 15th (Friday to Sunday) and the prompts will be created first come first serve! (I'm on pacific standard time, but there will be a small time cushion for anyone out of the timezone)
And since we're celebrating Mayblade, bonus points if the fic is based off a Mayblade prompt! And I'll try to get it out in time 🤡

Mayblade day 10: song (reminder that Nickelback was once featured on official Beyblade merch)
Nelvana and Hasbro decided they wanted to make Beyblade be more than just spinning tops with a tie-in anime series. After several attempts, I think they kinda gave up because non of them were successful. Beywheelz, Beyraiderz, and Beywarriors all flopped (despite some cool ideas). Their trading card game back in the og series is so obscure that I can’t get any info on it besides “it existed” and “it seems poorly thought out.” And at one point they got into music. After finding this YouTube playlist with Beyblade songs (openings, endings, the dub insert songs, etc), I noticed that for some reason it included How You Remind Me by Nickelback, California by Phantom Planet, and an AMV. After some research, I found that those songs were released on official Beyblade CD’s back in 2001-2002. So I’m gonna give some thoughts on every single song in that playlist in the context of Beyblade (also to make up for yesterday’s shorter post since I didn’t have much time)
Normally I'd add a cut here but my laptop's still broken and I don't know enough about the Tumblr app to use it properly
Catch a Cannonball by White Pony: This song is considered lost media and if anyone can find it please DM me or something
Let’s Beyblade by Sick Kid ft Lukas Rossi: The original series English dun opening. It’s very early 2000′s and serves as an opening pretty well. I just wish there was an extended/ full version
Fighting Spirits by System-B: As a standalone opening, it’s pretty good. As far as Beyblade goes, it’s wildly different than any opening we’ve gotten since, which makes it stand out even more
Cheer Song by System-B: Not sure how I feel about the song itself, but if it works for anything, it’s as an ED. Also, it’s so different from Fighting Sprits that I had a hard time believing they were both made by System-B
Beyblade by Giorgio Vanni: The Italian opening for the first season. The combination of rock with what sounds like bells(?) later in the song create a weird but interesting feel to it. Also “Boy-blade” is such a stupid pun that it had to have been made ironically, right. Right?
OFF THE CHAIN by TOSS & TURN: Song is a banger. I have no idea who thought it’d fit Beyblade as an opening. Love how it’s in ALL CAPS. Also I don’t speak a word of Japanese but there’s enough English that I can kinda guess what the song is trying to say
URBAN LOVE by Shiori: Another song in all caps, this time as an ED. While I’m normally not a fan of less energetic songs, this is pretty good
Jet by Fairy Fore: The scream at the beginning of the song makes you think you’re gonna get a much harder song than the first verse. And the it slowly ramps up until by the end, you’re back to the same energy as the beginning. Brilliant
What’s the Answer? by Retro G Style: Like OFF THE CHAIN, there is just enough English for me to get a vague idea of what the song is about. I like it, but wish that they had used the song by Retro G Style in G-Revolution for obvious reasons
Beyblade vforce by Giorgio Vanni: IMO a nice improvement over the first Italian opening, but goddamn “Boy-blade” is still here. Why?
Poroporo by Hana Hana: The ED for the V-Force movie. Every other beat is out of tune but it’s done on purpose so I can’t consider it a flaw. It grew on me over time but the decision to be out of tune on purpose is still weird
Victory by Dynamite SHU: I couldn’t find official information on the artist but someone said Victory was performed by Dynamite SHU so I’m rolling with it for now. Also it may be called Victory or Victoria. It’s unclear. It’s also part of the V-Force movie soundtrack and honestly I think it’d make a better ED than Poroporo, if only because Poroporo isn’t really enjoyable on your first listen (even if it really grown on you later)
Go Ahead by Motoko Kumai: Amazing OP for G-Revolution. Probably my favorite from Bakuten Shoot. It gets you pumped for the episode and it fits the tone of early G-Rev perfectly
Oh Yes!! by Sista with Yuka: As an ED, it’s pretty good. It’s also a great way to conclude the early episodes of G-Rev
Kaze no Fuku Basho by Makiyo: Somehow manages to be an improvement over Oh Yes!! while also fitting the middle portion of G-Rev better
Identified by Springs: Finally we learn that the G in G-Revolution stands for Good. It’s also the perfect OP to end the original series on
Sign of Wish by Makiyo: Like Identified is the perfect OP to end on, Sign of Wish is the perfect ED to conclude the original series. I know that the last episode used Kaze no Fuku Basho for the epilogue, but Sign of Wish was perfect for the BEGA arc, itself a great conclusion to the original story
Never Gonna Take Me Down by Anthony Vanderburgh: I’ve been fighting every night an day. I’m gonna do my best to put you away. It’s perfect for more friendly but intense (like most of the minor battles in tournament arcs). Like most of the dub insert songs, they’re bangers but sadly misused
Round After Round by Jason Dean Bennison: Like Never Gonna Take Me Down, it’s perfect for battles where both bladers want nothing more than to just fight each other
All Across the Nation by The Black Europeans: The fact that this was used for any battle in the season 1 tournaments (you know, the ones with multiple countries) is weird, but the song itself is still good
Let’s Go Beybladers by Krystal Band: The vocals have this strange quality to them, like the musical equivalent of a 2004 homemade video project made by a high school student. Objectively bad but charming in its own way
Swing Low by Jason Dean Bennison: The vocals feel out of place, but damn that bass is epic. Also you can kinda hear samples from Fighting Spirits in the background (that “DORAIGA” scream is hard to miss after a few listens)
Underdog by Mudd: In all honesty it’s a shame Mudd didn’t go one to have more success after Beyblade. Underdog was great
Always Be In the Game by Jason Dean Bennison: Normally I’m not a fan of rap vocals over rock instrumentation but Jason pulled it off. Not sure how or why, but it works
Switchblade by Lenz: Good song but someone messed up when they rereleased it. Also the contrast between the music and the lyrics in the chorus is fairly specific. Maybe it was written to be a character theme?
Hang On by Chris Szczesniak and Mike Dunca: It took 20 years for this song to be released. Amazing bass, amazing vocals, and I can’t think of a song that better fits Kai vs Brooklyn (the time where Kai wins, that is)
Rise Above the Storm by Daniel LeBlanc and Creighton Doane: Oddly uplifting yet very energetic. When I say this is one of the most uplifting songs I’ve ever heard, I am not exaggerating
I’m Not Going Down by Jonathan Evans and Gerard Tevlin: If Hang On fits Kai vs Brooklyn, then I’m Not Going Down fits Tyson vs Brooklyn. It’s just a powerful declaration of victory, being the musical embodiment of that final battle
Start the Circus by Far From Heroes: Good song but I don’t see what it has to do with Beyblade. Still a banger
Cinderella by Adam Crossley with 9 Point Landing: Just like Start the Circus, a banger that is completely unrelated to Beyblade
What the Girls Say by Jennesy: For a show with such a skewed gender ratio for characters, this song feels extremely out of place. It’s good, but manages to feel more “off” than Cinderella
Running Away by Project Wyze: A friend of mine likes to say that early 2000′s music was 80% pop rock and 10% rap metal. Running Away is part of that 10% and it is the perfect example of what rap metal is. If you like rap metal, you’ll like this song. If you don’t like rap metal, you won’t like this song
Let It Rip by Ego Massive: It truly relates to Beyblade and it isn’t an insert song. I’m surprised. The song itself is alright, but pales in comparison to some others
Split the Atom by Edwin and the Pressure: Great song. Unrelated to Beyblade. I’m starting to notice a trend
Pretty Girls by Prozzak: Good song and I have though the glass break sound effect was real and in my house on one occasion
Girls & Boys by Good Charlotte: This song is 50% less out of place than What the Girls Say
Year 3000 by Busted: Possibly a warm take, but the Jonas Brothers’ cover of the song was a downgrade
Buck Rogers by Feeder: I first heard this song playing Gran Turismo and forever associate it with that game. I can’t judge the song on its own because of that
Movies by Alien Ant Farm: Honestly it’s probably the weakest song that released on that CD. It’s not bad per se, but it’s less good than the rest
Teenage Dirtbag by Wheatus: Hit early 2000′s song that was shoehorned into Beyblade merch and honestly, it wasn’t a bad idea
Nothing by A: Google “A Nothing” and see if you find this song. Other than that, it’s great. Love it
How You Remind Me by Nickelback: It’s Nickelback. That’s all there is to say. Take that how you will
California by Phantom Planet: If only Beyblade saw the US as more than New York and Las Vegas (and later, Moab, Utah). The west coast isn’t even acknowledged. Had they made one of the characters be from California (like any of the All-Starz), this would’ve been more fitting
Metal Saga by Clifton David: While the English OP for mfb isn’t bad, it feels like a remix of the Japanese OP, but without being different enough to stand out
Metal Fight Beyblade by YU+KI: YU+KI did an amazing job in every season of mfb, and the first opening is no exception
Boys ~To the Radiant Tomorrow~ by MASH: I thought Boys was the artist for far longer than I should. It’s a great ED, and has IMO some of the strongest visuals for a Beyblade ED even though it’s very simple
Beyblade Metal Fusion by unknown artist: I don’t know who made the Italian opening for Fusion but it was pretty good
Galaxy Heart by YU+KI: It takes everything that made Metal Fight Beyblade good an multiplies it tenfold. Absolutely amazing
Oozora wo Koete Yuje by Odoriba Soul: Pretty good ED. It kinda gives me similar vibes as Oh Yes!! but I’m not sure why
Beyblade Metal Masters by unknown artist: An improvement over the Italian Fusion opening, taking it from good to great
Spinning the World by Noa: Love it. Great ED for the Sol Blaze movie. Probably on the same tier as Kaze no Fuku Basho for me
Kokoro no Yuki by YU+KI: the 4d opening slaps even harder than Galaxy Heart
Destiny by YCHRO: Just like Kokoro no Yuki managed to outdo Galaxy Heart, Destiny managed to outdo Oozora wo Koete Yuke. God 4d had great music (if only it wasn’t a shortened season)
Shine On by unknown artist: Absolute banger. That’s all I have to say about it besides that the artist deserves to actually be credited
Let It Rip by The Lodge: I did not expect bars of this level from a song made for a toy commercial. Even though the dub adding rap in anime is usually an unpopular decision, this was good
Game Changer by the Lodge: Another banger
To the Extreme by the Lodge: Why couldn’t the XTS toyline go as hard as this song?
Deploy and Destroy: This song is great and makes Stealth Battlers seem a lot cooler than they were irl
Own the Dome: Somehow a team of people got Hasbro’s worst stadium ever, and made the best commercial out of it. And part of that has to do with this absolute bop of a song
Stunt, Race, Crash by the Lodge: Like To the Extreme, Deploy and Destroy, and Own the Dome, this was a great song that advertised a terrible product
Zero-G Bey! Go! by YU+KI: I’d rank it between Metal Fight Beyblade and Galaxy Heart. It’s good, but not as much as the previous Japanese OPs (granted the bar was pretty damn high)
Looking Up Smiling (We Go!) by YCHRO: It manages to be just barely better than Destiny, which is pretty impressive
Beyblade: Shogun Steel by Sugar High Bunny Punch: Does it fit Beyblade? Not really. Is it good? Maybe not great, but better than I’ve seen people give it credit for
Let the Games Begin by Arunachal: The Beywheelz OP that was used for the English and Japanese versions alike. Like the English OP for Shogun Steel, I think it’s better than given credit for. Although like Beywheelz, it pales in comparison to the other seasons
A Better Place by Jonathan Evans: One of the guys behind I’m Not Going Down makes his return. A Better Place is a pretty good ED< even if it doesn’t stand out
Beyraiderz Theme by iSH and Nicholas Walsh: I’ll be honest the chorus is the only part I like from this. The rest is serviceable as an opening, but I wouldn’t call it good
Come Around by SPACEMAN MUSIC: I like Come Around, and consider it an improvement over A Better Place, but I don’t think it fits Beyraiderz as a season
Beywarriors: Cyborg by unknown artist: A better OP than Beyraiderz, but still a tad below Let the Games Begin
Hold Tight by unknown artist: Like anything relating to Beywarriors, the artist name is hard to find. It’s a strange ED, but I can’t put my finger on why. Like Poroporo, it’s interesting, even if I’m not sure whether I like it
Burst Finish! by Tatsuyuki Kobayashi: A good OP that fits the first season of Burst. It’s great
Believe by SHIKURAMEN: The only Burst ED to get a full version, and it’s certainly deserving of it. Like Burst Finish! it fits the first season of Burst perfectly
Our Time by Steven Allerick Chen: A great opening in par with Burst Finish
Battle Above My League by Fenwick & the Futures: The instrumentation is ok I guess. The vocals have this weird feel to them, like lofi but not really. Like Poroporo and Hold Tight, this song interests me because I don’t quite understand what I’m hearing
Evolution Burst! by unknown artist: The Beyblade Burst God OP is great. I'd call it the best of Japanese Burst openings but Cho-Z exists, making Evolution Burst! a worthy second
Beyxercise by Señor Hanami: If we ignore the visuals in the ED (so no Markiplier dancing), it goes from hilariously good to just regular good. The beat is catchy, but the vocals really make this song. It's performed by Hanami's VA, which makes that last "BASUTO FINISHU" so much better
Beyxercise 2 by Señor Hanami: It's Beyxercuse but again. The beat is different, and a bit of a slightly downgrade, but everything else is as good as the original Beyxercise
Evolution by Dave Vives and Steven Pagano: It's a great opening. Not much to say other than it's really good
Made for This by Vaski and Ian Everson: Amazing. Absolutely amazing. It's hard not to sing along and go "We were made for this"
Chouzetsu Muteki Blader by Ryosuke Sasaki: Easily one of my favorite Beyblade openings ever. Everything about it is fantastic
Bey-Pop! by Shun Kusakawa: Catchy and cheery is the best way to describe this. Lovely song
Bey-Pop Swing! by Shun Kusakawa: It's Bey-Pop bit more energetic. Still catchy and cheery, but with a tad bit more excitement
Turbo by Nate Wants to Battle: Best of the English OP's according to many, and a very close second best in my personal ranking. Nathan Sharp has delivered everything one could ask for from an opening
Gatti'n'Roll by unknown artist: I genuinely dkn't know why anyone though this was a good idea. I guess they thought they couldn't beat Chouzetsu Miteki Blader at its win game and went in the opposite direction, being very cheery rather than adrenaline-pumping. For what it's trying to be, it's pretty good. It just doesn't really work as an OP
Rise by Jonathan Young: IMO the best English opening in all of Beyblade. Jonathan Young made a high-energy OP that gets you pumped for the anime. Also his JJBA OP covers are great
Journey Into Tomorrow by Tony Rodini: I have a hard time deciding between this and Made for This for which is the best eyecatcher theme. Journey Into Tomorrow is just as good as Made for This and Made for This was great
Sparking Revolution by unknown artist: Not a bad OP but it doesn't really stand out. It's good, but it's just "there"
We Got the Spin by Konrad OldMoney and Johnny Gr4ves: Like Gatti'n'Roll, they were trying to go in the opposite direction of the previous opening. However, GT was a more lighthearted and comedic season, while Sparking is more serious than its predecessor. This means that to fit the season, we'd need something as intense as Rise, or at least Evolution, and instead we get this. And unlike the original series or mfb using rap on occasions, We Got the Spin lacks the energy present in songs like Shine On and Always Be In the Game
Clash! Dynamite Battle! by NORISTRY: Great opening. Probably my second favorite Japanese Burst OP behind Muteki Blader
We're Your Rebels by Nate Wants to Battle: Massive step up from We Got the Spin, and it's just what we expected from the guy that made Turbo

Random non Halloween-related Halloween night cartoon rambles:
My sister recently recommended me All Saints Street and looking at the thumbnail on YouTube, the art style seems super cute! I watched the trailer and may give it a go soon :D. It’s up on my tabs, and I’m honestly curious how it is!! She said I might’ve liked it bc it’s slice-of-life. But I haven’t even gotten around to a close friend’s recommendation of Ousama Ranking, bc I am terrible with recommendations… I also forgot most of the anime movies I wanted to wanted T~T. Short attention spans are a curse :((
I have absolutely so so SO much to say about JoJo’s Bizarre Adventures, as I’m basically nearing the end of Season 3. But part 2 where Joseph is the hilarious protagonist has got to be my favorite??? It is just such a good mix of action and hilarity lololol. I really gotta thank the mix of BoBoBo, Bakuten Shoot, and pt. 2 JoJo for getting me back the feel of excitement from being a young kid who enjoyed cartoons mainly marketed towards boys and shonen anime.
The more I draw Bakuten Stuff thing, the more I wonder how Metal Fusion is. It’s the Beyblade series my SO, sister, and people around me generally refer to/remember. But all IK so far is that Gingka is the protag, the dub voice was a bit iffy for him, and little else?? Has anyone watched Metal Fusion — dub or sub?
The release of Wiglett makes me so happy!! Gosh, I would DIE for Wiglett (figuratively of course!). It’s such a cute pokemon aaaaa. And all the Wiglett and Diglett drawings I keep seeing on my feed give me such joy lololol.
And speaking of art, another thing I have to add is that I really really want to draw Kamisama Kiss art. I had a passing thought of it the other day, and though it’s a relatively old shoujo, I only found out about it last year! And watched + rewatched it a 2nd time within a single year. I may do a 3rd watch-through. It’s an oddly comforting anime?? And the traditional Japanese aesthetic and clothing of characters is so pretty!! I don’t know though if I can do much RN bc my anatomy skills are still a bit lacking (so I guess we will see?).
Lastly, I dropped a TON of Webtoons (reader’s burnout, slow/bad pacing, stories going in weird directions etc.) and I’ve been looking for new ones to read. But I haven’t quite felt much of a push towards the medium, and nothing seems to catch my eye or focus for long. It’s sorta sad seeing the direction the platform is going in tho. And tropes are not bad necessarily — not if you do them up well with the right amount of creativity. But since I was primarily drawn to the platform for romance stories, I realized some of the same tropes that sell to an audience have been rehashed so many times. And it’s not really fun anymore when you consider that romance is an already-oversaturated genre in any platform. Guess my desire for a good romance-oriented story may have to go to shoujo instead!!
Edit bc I forgot:
Also wtf is going on with the Miraculous Ladybug fandom??? I dropped the show maybe 2 years ago (burnout, toxic writing, the fandom getting a bit crazy). But since it’s been trending, I keep seeing *SPOILERS* stuff about the love square reversing in Season 5??? Is there actually progression?!?!! Yooooo…. I really wanna see what’s going on. Like skipping the more irrelevant bits and jumping to plot. But I may not because I just feel so conflicted on the story, which has so so much potential, but is done kinda on iffy grounds.

hii !!! how are you doing?
i just wanted to know if you possibly might release a new ch of more than a shadow ! (no rush just curious :)
and if you possibly had any new anime (sports or not) reccs !
but omg i want a new ch of ace of diamond so badly i hope we can make it to nationals 😭😭
Hi Anon! I'm doing well and I hope all is well with you too.
I'm planning on finishing 'More than a Shadow.' I didn't abandon the fic. It's just that the summer has been hectic for me. Between work and then I had move as well. So I haven't had much time to write. But I have two pages for chapter twenty. I'm hoping to be done with the chapter 20 in the next couple of weeks so I can upload it.
I'm currently watching "Ao Ashi" which a sports (soccer) anime. It's very good and the MC kinda reminds me of Sawamura. I really enjoyed watching "Bakuten!!" (Rhythmic Gymnastics), "Re-main," (water polo anime) "Run With The Wind," (Track) and "Hanebado!' (Badminton). What kind of anime do you like? I can give non sports anime recommendation based on your preferences. Otherwise, I will be all over the place lol. I like to watch a little bit of everything.
I think we might be going to Koshien!

you know. i feel like i need to come out and say something. bakuten fandom, i am so truly sorry, i have lied to all of you. i have been putting on this lie for so long that i cant even remember how or where or when it started but i know that it's been going on for long enough that i feel like if i dont do this now, i'll never stop. you've all been so kind to me, i truly appreciate everyone in this fandom and i love you all. but i need to come clean. you might be mad at me, upset, disappointed, and i understand. i feel like i've let you all down. i hope you can find a way to forgive me, but if you don't, that's okay. what ive done is inexcusable. im so sorry to those ive hurt, to my friends ive made in this fandom. i hope this doesnt change our friendship or how you think of me. i hope somehow, we can continue to be friends and still stay strong with our bond. i'm shaking as i type this right now, i don't know how you'll all react, but i know i need to do this. i'm not expecting forgiveness, i'm not expecting anyone to come to my defense, but i hope you listen to me when i say from the bottom of my heart, i apologize. i... am the muffin man.

Fandom ask game!
I was tagged by @just-lexy
1, 7, 16, 19 were my questions
1. If you’re an author, how many WIPs do you currently have? (Be honest!)
Oh gosh! So I've currently only got about 5 that have progressed past the 'ideas and aesthetic' phase (more details on this later)
The rest are WIPs that live in purgatory
An au where Yuriy is a muse and Kai is in an art class.
This is a post canon fic set in St. Petersburg. Yuriy and Kai reunite after being apart since the end of G-rev and there's a few shenanigans, but mostly angst, romance and a little beating up of Garland.
Assassins Yuriy and Kai are hired to kill each other for reasons. Enemies to ... something (aesthetics phase)
Business tycoon Kai Hiwatari desperately needs a vacation and decides to go visit a farm….where he meets Yuriy Ivanov married to Robert Jürgens (please blame @claireelizabeth495 for this).
Please see below for the next one ❤️ ⬇️
7. What’s the last thing you read that made you cry?
Honestly, i cannot remember if I've ever read anything that made me actually cry. I'm just not a person that cries very easily.
16. Describe your WIP that currently has the highest word count.
Writing this with @parfaitkiwi and we've been planning this for a few months now and I'm so EXCITED about this one.
It's gonna have shenanigans, the mafia, underground fighting rings, a vigilante, a super secret police service - and more shenanigans.
Bakuten city has had a long standing crime problem. Something needs to be done until a man in a cape comes by and tries to change something.
19. What’s your favorite character headcanon?
I like to think that he would use art as a therapy tool, and he likes to use charcoal for his sketches and experiments with a lot of different mediums until he finally settles on oil paints. Kai made Boris (Kuznetsov) model for him once and Borya was incredibly restless and struggled to remain still which Kai found incredibly vexxing - because he can stay still for hours
Incredibly late to the party as usual, sorry

Today’s date: June 24th, 2021 (nine days until Ace returns)
MY GUYS, GALS, AND NON BINARY PALS!!! IT IS THE FINAL BAKUTEN THURSDAY!!! unless we get a season two
It’s amazing, seeing how much this chaotic mess of a fandom has grown. I joined this wonderful group on April 25th, 2021. Almost two months ago! It sure is amazing seeing what we’ve done since. The rise of Mothsato, cursed edits, incredible fanficitons, amazing art, legendary memes, and so much more. It truly is fascinating.
I really hope there is a lot of post limit hitting today. I’m predicting Quinn, Spicy, Jason, and Tea hit it, as well as two more people. Someone new hits it too. Sadly, I cannot participate in the bullying today. Oh well ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
On a serious note, though: thank you. Thank you all so much for being the best fandom I have ever been a part of. This is my found family. I love you all so much. I know some of us will move on after this episode, but I really hope that we can all still be friends. The Bakugang is the best thing that has ever happened to me. Seeing it fade away is my worst fear. Even if we don’t have the same common interest anymore, I still hope we stay as close as we are now. I know that not everyone here is on the discord server, but I would also like to thank Ali for creating it, the original squad for forming the Bakugang, and all the new memebers we picked up along the way for keeping it alive. Thank you all so much. Truly.
Thank you for letting me soar with all of you.
Sending love from the void!
Ace <3

Spring Anime 2021: Embarrassment of Riches
So this current anime season absolutely stinks, which just makes the last one look even more impressive. Well, maybe not all of it...
Zombieland Saga Revenge
Tumblr media
First off, you don't need to tell me that the following is a severe outlier opinion. We good? Ok. ZLSR is, in a word, subpar. I liked S1 back in the day, but it was already in the process of getting lazy towards the end. S2 continues this trend and is basically just another idol show. And as someone who actually does watch other idol shows I have to say that it's not a particularly good one of those either. The zombie gimmick has mostly stopped mattering and we're just doing what every idol show does, only with the odd occasional sight gag. The alleged subversive qualities mostly amount to a flashback for Yuugiri, which is admittedly the best part of the show but feels like it barely has anything to do with anything. Apart from that, it's a bunch of generic idol plots, rehashed character beats, shoddy attempts at twists (while not connecting to any setups from S1), and the obligatory "idols give us hope" ending, which is terribly hackneyed and flat out bad. Tae gets further memed into the ground, because of course she does. And there's stuff that was simply never good to begin with, like Kotarou and his comedy schtick, which gets truly insufferable now that there's no qualities to distract from it. It really makes me think that S1 wasn't even all that good to begin with and seems like an attempt to turn this surprise success into an easy money longrunner with no edge and no ambitions. "The idol show for people who don't watch idol shows" indeed, but not the way you mean it. 4/10
Bakuten
Tumblr media
But not to dwell on the failures, with the second show we're already above the cut — barely. This one got my attention with its really impressive performance scenes early on and it totally sticks to that, which is even more impressive. But besides that? Well, this is by far the most predictable show in a season where I watched an unambitious Kiraralike and put ZLS on blast for having no ideas. The characters are a mixed bag, some are cool (Shida, Asawo), some are very annoying (Mashiro), but those are the supports. The main cast is extremely one-dimensional, which is fine until they try to heap a ton of pathos on their lead, which doesn't go well. But I guess execution matters, and Bakuten is slick enough to get by. Writing this down in stark daylight I feel like I overrated this show somewhat (I actually put it over the next one originally, which definitely doesn't hold up when thinking about it), but I was indeed mostly entertained. 6/10
Yakunara Mug Cup mo
Tumblr media
Yeah. Of course Mug Cup definitely doesn't invent or subvert anything either, but it's a pretty good Kiraralike that's always entertaining to watch. Explaining the qualities of such a nothing genre is as difficult as ever, but it mostly comes down to me liking the characters and it having nothing to annoy me. It's shorter than normal, which is a plus for slim shows like this. And yeah, you can make an excessive amount of dick jokes with the clay fondling. That helps too. Looks are just fine, pleasant but nothing out of the ordinary. Comfy low-effort anime. 6/10
Vivy: Fluorite Eye's Song
Tumblr media
This one is decent, but sadly still a major letdown. Because the first few episodes of Vivy were excellent and kicked ass, but then it became increasingly clear that the writing can't cash the checks the ideas wrote while the action starts running into severely diminishing returns. Vivy just keeps slowly getting worse and worse as it goes on, not by a huge amount each episode but by the end there's a pretty sizeable gulf between potential and result. Going into detail would probably be a little much for this venue because there's a lot, but from the top level view the issue is that while Vivy has good fundamental ideas and steals at the right places, it just isn't a smart show — it's schlock, and by the end, poorly thought out schlock that tries to smooth out every problem with liberal application of the big feels hammer and le epic twist at that. Yeah, couldn't tell that the Re:Zero dude was aboard here, for sure. That said, it still works pretty well as entertaining schlock that is not to be taken too seriously, and the characters are generally just very fun to watch even when they're doing stupid things. Still, I can't in good conscience rate this higher than Beatless, a show that looks like butt but properly executes on its ideas. 6/10
Super Cub
Tumblr media
So this is 100% a Honda commercial, and I got really mad a Yuru Camp last season for being a blatant shill. Yet I'm feeling this, what gives? I think the main difference is that Super Cub is specifically a commercial for one product (and a very iconic product at that), while Yuru Camp is so all over the place that it ends up mostly a commercial for consumerism in general. And when Super Cub goes too hard on the product (which it does), it's at least pretty entertaining. That's something about Super Cub in general: It goes hard. Your regular Kiraralike this is not, because it's uncommonly slow, focused and moody - yes, it almost measures up to Yuru Camp at its best and demolishes it at its worst. Also, it's just extremely amusing to see sadblob Koguma grow a huge grizzly biker beard and become a badass outlaw dad to her goofy wife and cute daughter, all thanks to the power of afforable personal transportation. Needless to say, that can get unintentionally silly, but Super Cub has so much charm that it doesn't matter — it's great when it's good and still funny when it's not. 7/10
Shadows House
Tumblr media
Shadows House turned up with a lot of potential, and I have to say it at least delivered on most of it. It has some problems; notably I'm not a fan of how the entire middle turned out to be a tournament arc of sorts that seems curiously inspired by Resident Evil memes, crest-shaped intentations and boulder punching included. I also think that this is a show that would be perfectly fine without explaining much, but I guess it is a shounen manga after all so we got dumped on eventually anyway. At least that came late - close relative Promised Neverland didn't show that much restraint. Shadows House is generally well written though, with great characters, interesting interactions and a great hook. But what really makes it memorable is that it's exceptionally good at the cute/creepy contrast, something that is often tried but rarely works as well as here, with great character designs and very appropriate production. I hope this gets a sequel, because it seems like it's just getting started. 7/10
SSSS.Dynazenon
Tumblr media
Coming in with a fondness for Gridman, Dynazenon didn't have to do much to convince me. The surprise though is that it's not a rehash even if it's basically the same show, a character drama where occasionally huge and goofy fights break out. Dynazenon is Gridman done better, and the interesting part is how it accomplishes this - mainly by being far more conventional. I do appreciate that Gridman went for something weird and almost experimental, but that only really paid off towards the end while most of the show was a distraction/holding pattern. It just didn't feel like there was enough material for a full series there, more like a movie maybe, if even that. Dynazenon fixes this by just being a TV show, with an actual cast of characters that each have their own arc. And by spreading the material this way, Dynazenon ends up having a lot more nuance than its intensely focused predecessor, while having the same themes and not actually being any deeper. In a way, Gridman ends up looking like the spinoff in retrospect, while Dynazenon is the full package. 8/10
Thunderbolt Fantasy S3
Tumblr media
So how good was this season? So good that Thunderbolt Fantasy doesn't end up at the top, that's how. And all the elements that made Tbolt such a sure thing are still there, big hammy puppets doing stunts and scheming never gets old. However, I do have to note that at this point, the writing appears to have gotten too comfortable. I don't expect it to ever top the amazing S1 ending, but at this point it's like Tbolt has stopped trying to deliver on endings at all and seems in the process of retooling itself into a longrunner instead. Barely anything gets resolved in S3 (the climax is that the climax of S2 is resolved again, for good this time... maybe), and everything else is just setting up plotpoints for the next season. Tbolt is truly lucky that it doesn't actually need to resolve anything to be a great time, but at this point I have to say that I'd appreciate it if they wrapped it up with S4. 8/10
Nomad: Megalobox 2
Tumblr media
Speaking of sequels to shows I liked, Nomad doesn't so much improve upon its predecessor but steamrolls right over it. This is a tall order, since Megalobox was surprisingly good for a sports shounen and had a real nice, heartwarming ending that Nomad instantly negates for purposes of drama and everyone being extremely miserable. That sounds like a pretty terrible idea - and it would be, if Nomad wasn't as excellent as it is. To call it not the same show would be an understatement, because it's a true sequel, not just the same characters doing their thing some more, or new characters doing the same thing as the old ones did. Indeed my biggest problem with Megalobox was that it still closely adhered to its genre template and was very predictable; Nomad fixes this issue thoroughly. Nomad is about questioning what being a hotblooded shounen protagonist eventually leads you to, and how to fix everything you screwed up by being one. You could call it a deconstruction, but that term has been so abused for cynical, edgy "thing you like actually sucks" takes that I feel like it doesn't really fit here. Nomad isn't cynical at all, it's just a character drama about some boxers past their prime, and it being a sequel to a show that is indeed rather formulaic just enhances the experience. My biggest issue with it was that I really like what they did with Joe in this story, so the big focus on Mac's backstory felt like a distraction for a long time. But in the end that turned out to be absolutely necessary to make the ending work. The ending's just great, by the way, and I shall say not more about it. 9/10
Odd Taxi
Tumblr media
Yeah boy, here's the show that has apparently become somewhat of a "greatest show you didn't watch" meme, which I can feel smug about because I don't need YouTubers to tell me what's good and followed this from day one. Anyway, Odd Taxi is indeed great, the greatest show in a few years even. What starts out as seemingly a relaxed hangout show in the vein of Midnight Diners quickly turns into a psychological murder mystery while never losing its quirky humor. The character writing is outstanding, with even small bit players being on a level that the average anime wishes it could have for leads. And the rollout of the mystery is exemplary, with answers given and new questions raised every episode with a satisfying and logical payoff in the end. This is also the rare anime that has rock solid production from the first to the last second; it's never really flashy but excellently done and highly consistent nonetheless. And the music just owns. I have a few complaints, mainly that there's a few logical weaknesses in the story (which wouldn't even register in a lesser show, but sticks out here since the rest is so immaculately constructed) and that the ending overextends on the emotions when the rest of the show is so reserved and dry in comparison. But those are only the reasons why I didn't give it perfect marks, and I almost did that anyway. 9/10

Bakuten as things me and my college friends have said/done, a few of them questionable (for legal reasons some are jokes-)
- Masamune, Onagawa, Tsukidate, and Watari casually and platonically refer to each other as “babe”. Once Futaba and Misato are there long enough and if they’re comfortable they’ll be a part of it too.
- when they started out, Onagawa would collect minor injuries and didn’t really care as long as it wasn’t life threatening. That first year the other two took turns asking “how many injuries do you have right now” “one?” “Not just the new one” “only like four...five?” “Onagawa!” “What?!” This stopped after the first year and Masamune and Tsukidate’s sanities are grateful.
- Masamune: Hey, Futaba I know you’ve been kinda run down with school, do you wanna study and hang out with me and Onagawa in my dorm now? Futaba: oh well if that’s okay I mean I really don’t want to impose- Onagawa: IMPOSE?? WE asked YOU. Get over here before I get Watari to yell at you we ADORE you and want to make sure your okay. Masamune: we’ve made up your mind for you, you are coming.
- one day after a particularly long weekend practice they all go back to their rooms and it’s only like twenty minutes before someone texts “I’m bored :(“ to the group chat and they all agree and end up hanging out doing whatever until 1am.
-Watari is really good at pretending to be sober when the gang is high as fuck, his only tell being he can’t resist turning the sink off and on again for five minutes when he goes to the bathroom because it sounds cool.
-Watari screams bloody murder at jump scares. He is made fun of but also forbidden from watching horror with them because they got noise complaints from the other sports team dorms.
- I can’t decide who would be making out on the floor but while this is happening misato is also on the floor- on his knees leaning over a bowl of soup and sipping loudly nearby. Futaba films this.
- Futaba and Onagawa can recite John Mulaney specials by heart. Everyone else thinks it’s horrifying.
-okay that’s it hit post

mihotose · 2 years
Note
What do you like the most about Mihotose? I’m thinking about buying it but haven’t decided.
omg i get to talk about mihotose Prompted for once thats epic
short answer: araki hirofumi as nikkari aoe ☆
nikkari is my favourite sword, but i was introduced to tkrb via toumyu and so my basis for a lot of the characters is therefore their myu interpretations. if nenmatsu shows had main characters srs17's would be nikkari, and srs17 was my first proper myu, which explains why i attached to him so strongly, and hence why mihotose, nikkari and araki's first myu, is my favourite. araki really puts everything into nikkari and has given him so much depth, even if nikkari is actually fairly subtle and never so open about what hes feeling (as character would dictate)
tl;dr my favourite part about mihotose is nikkari bc hes my favourite character lol
spoilers below about the other things i like about mihotose but if you follow me ive talked about it so much anyway. if you do end up buying it perhaps something to read for further appreciation after watching
besides “my favourite character’s in it” mihotose is pretty different to the stories that preceded it, atsukashiyama and bakuten, because its not about “preventing changes to history before they happen” but “dealing with the fallout after history has already been changed.” its not a one and done, kill the enemies who are trying to make changes (not that that was all atsukashiyama and bakuten were, but that was the basics), its the long term sustained effort over decades to step in the right spots and let everything play out as its meant to be, even if it hurts to stand back and watch it happen. the history retrograde army is barely in it, and even though the big bad at the climax is a kebiishi, the kebiishi was never what was being led up to. after the kebiishi fight it cuts to ieyasu’s deathscene, which has been the point all along - the reassurance that they were successful, that theyve led history on its correct course, and delivered ieyasu safely to his final destination. this style of story is pretty refreshing, at least to me. its quiet, and maybe not so exciting, and perhaps has an atmosphere of sleepiness around it (its about a lullaby after all). it gives me a feeling of some sort of deepseated sadness that it knows is coming, a sort of melancholy for what it knows it will meet at the end of the road, which obviously is the story, but its the emotion i associate with it.
because of its events unfolding over a long period of time, the characters have a long time to become involved in them, get close to them, be affected by them, and come around to new ways of thinking. again, unlike atsukashiyama and bakuten (which i will continue to use as comparisons because it was after watching mihotose after those two that i really started to appreciate mihotose’s different way of doing things) i feel every character gained something from the mission. for example, horikawa, izuminokami, kogitsunemaru, and mikazuki all took somewhat of a backseat in their shows and were more for support for the main pairs. not to say this is a bad thing or that they did not get a focus at all but i like that in mihotose, though main character status rests most firmly on ishikirimaru, all of them have struggles and all of them learn something.
i also really like the characters chosen for this story. related to the last point but i think that the selection of this particular group of swords to deal with this particular mission, that is, raising the child that would become tokugawa ieyasu, is something really special. these swords have very little in common; theyre not like sanjou or the shinsengumi with established ties or history together, with kashuu or hachisuka as outsiders learning how to interact with them. theyre all separate with different backgrounds, a unit completely out of left field, and yet the characters’ themes still all come together really beautifully to contrast against each other. nikkari and ishikirimaru, for example, contrast due to their differences in divinity; nikkari and monoyoshi on being wakizashi centred around smiles. individually, i think each sword ends up with some emotional stake tied to the mission, either as written in history like monoyoshi or forged through time like ookurikara. so i feel theyre less motivated by abstract notions of “protecting history” and more because they genuinely do care about these humans, and have grown to love them.
i Hope this was somewhat helpful, though i Suspect it probably isnt. i enjoyed thinking about mihotose tho thank you

songs sung by beyblade VAs #2
a couple of people were interested in another post with songs by beyblade seiyuu... well alright, this comes with the fact that in addition to the main five, there's a small handful of big name seiyuu in bakuten shoot who have done a lot of everything and the rest have done pretty much nothing, so, this is a very mixed bag. and a bit too many of these are hetalia songs because i just actually really like hetalia music ok
# a link to the previous post if you missed it #
i put these in alpahbetical order according to character names so you can easily just check whoever you want. or whatever. do what you want with these
hiroshi kamiya (blood & garland):
lost in shinsekai (one piece)
dark side of the moon (shingeki no kyojin)
wasabi mizuta (boris):
yume wo kikasete (doraemon) -- i.... i couldn't find anything but doraemon songs by her.......... so this is how life is now
souichirou hoshi (brooklyn):
I can fly (saiyuuki) -- this was like my favourite song 13 years ago? i’m having such a throwback compiling this post
ima kono shunkan ga subete (gundam seed)
akira sasanuma (claude):
marukaite chikyuu: austria edition (axis powers hetalia) -- not very surprised this is the only thing i could find
yasuhiro takato (dunga):
pechka -kokoro tomoshite- (axis powers hetalia) -- also didn't expect to find anything but russia's songs. and i didn’t. russia it is
daisuke sakaguchi (giancarlo):
update go-issho ni (hyouka) -- with satomi satou
back to back (dynasty warriors)
shiho kikuchi (hiromi):
spring dream (tokimeki memorial)
imitation (memories off 2nd)

tales of hermit (K project)
oishii tomato no uta (axis powers hetalia) -- we are dying on this hill now guys
emi shinohara (judy on season 1):
starlight ni kiss shite (sailor moon)
hitomi wo wasurenaide (lupin III)
yumi touma (judy on seasons 2 & 3):
kiss shite ii (angelique)
my heart iidasenai, your heart tashikametai (aa! megamisama) -- with kikuko inoue & aya hisakawa. i apparently love hisakawa too much and can’t make a list without her in there somewhere
kumiko watanabe (julia):
love drug (tekkaman blade II)
say yes! (digimon frontier)
junko shimakata (kiki):
kimi no ouen uta (sotsugyou -graduation-)
hirofumi nojima (king):
shitsuren samba (toradora!) -- this one is on soundcloud because i hunted for this specifically on youtube for ages and it was nowhere. the volume is ridiculously high for some reason
ki ta ko re (kuroko no basket)
hiromi konno (mathilda):
nade nade shite (gegege no kitarou)
hakase no same to inu (nichijou)
kappei yamaguchi (michael):
it's a show time (magic kaito 1412) -- with mamoru miyano
tenka muteki no yattarou (samurai pizza cats) -- some other familiar voice is in there in the beginning too. what a coincidence. misi what a coincidence of you again
hiro yuuki (mihael):
brain damage (weiß kreuz) -- i know this guy has sung a lot of stuff including lots for weiß kreuz and i love his voice but the title of this one describes my mood when i tried to find any GOOD songs
aya hirano (ming-ming):
god knows (the melancholy of haruhi suzumiya)
cha-la head cha-la (dragon ball z featured in lucky star) -- it's just so beautiful.
kouki miyata (mystel):
akogare starting block (free!)
yuukyuu no tsuki (kyou kara maou!)
omi minami (olivier):
in the stillness (kidou senkan nadesico)
born to be queen (code geass) -- with junko minagawa
yuki kaida (ozma):
ni hao chuugoku (axis powers hetalia)
koko de bokura wa deatte shimatta (prince of tennis) -- with ryoutarou okiayu
mie sonozaki (queen):
whiteout (bleach)
yakusoku (growlanser)
kouichi nagano (rai):
run to win (eyeshield 21) -- with aya hirano, miyu irino and kappei yamaguchi, technically nagano is the only one whose voice you can't hear worth shit tbh (i assume he can't really sing. he's just there to be like a B voice in the bg) but i've always liked this cute song plus it's like ming-ming and michael singing with rai pushed flat against the wall somewhere behind them so here it is anyway
akiko kimura (raul & yuuya):
yasashii mirai (inazuma eleven chrono stone) -- with aoi yuuki
hikaru ikeda (salima):
katakoi (yakin byoutou) -- apparently this song is from a porn that's regarded as the most brutally graphic hentai to ever exist? sounds good
tomokazu sugita (sergei):
SM hantei forum (inu x boku SS)
one jump ahead (aladdin)
kenichi suzumura (steve):
oreta tsubasa de -with broken wings- (digimon frontier) -- i was getting tired at this point and steve is a very minor character with a very major seiyuu for whatever reason and i didn't even feel like browsing suzumura's discography for this purpose so i just put my boy kouichi's amazing song here and called it a day. the best digimon character song to existtt
takehito koyasu (volkov):
dengon (fushigi yuugi)
hyakumankai no je t'aime (rosario + vampire) -- the difference in mood between these two songs was too much for me. good thing this is the end of the list

BEYBLADE KINK BINGO 2019
Tumblr media
INFO
The challenge will run from September 9th to Oktober 8th (09/09 - 08/10). The bingo card will be posted on September 8th.
The bingo card is 5x5 squares, and each square is a kink (crossdressing, spanking etc). Your goal is to fill five boxes in a row (down, across or diagonal) to get a bingo. You can fill as many (or as few, no pressure) boxes as you want.
When you post, TAG YOUR ART/STORIES! I won’t police your content, so make sure you tag to let the reader/viewer know what they’re about to see. You should obviously age the characters up before they get up to anything too naughty, but I’m not gonna judge you so long as you use tags. Also, if you’re posting on tumblr, it’s a good idea to keep the NSFW content under a cut.
And if you post on tumblr, please use #beybladekinkbingo and/or #bbkinkbingo2019 so I can find your entries and reblog them to this tumblr. If you post elsewhere, Ao3 or twitter or anywhere, poke me so I can link to your art/stories.
There will be THREE PRIZES raffled off at the end of the challenge. Everyone who has completed at least one bingo (five squares in a row) are entered into the raffle. The prize is a piece of art by Flaggermousse (see examples here). You can request one or two Beyblade characters doing something naughty (can be Bakuten, Burst, Metal etc). The drawing will be a lineart.
RULES
Each written entry must be 300 words minimum, and each drawn entry must be at least a lineart or a clean sketch*.
Each square needs its own entry. You cannot combine squares. You can have more than one kink present in your text/drawing, but it will only count for one square. You are allowed to link your texts/drawings together into series, though, or chapters in a story, but each prompt needs its own text/drawing.
The drawings/stories must not have been posted anywhere before. Feel free to pull out and dust off old WIPs, so long as they haven’t been posted anywhere.
You can draw/write for any season, any show (Burst, Metal, Bakuten etc), canon and OC characters are allowed, solo play or couples or threesomes or piles, and you can stick to a single set of characters, or use different ones for different prompts.
One person’s kink is another person’s vanilla. You choose how explicit you want your entries to be. There needs to be kink, but that’s a broad term. You can for instance show character A bound and gagged but still wearing their clothes. Again, I will not be policing content, except if you qualify for a prize, then I’ll check to see you’ve fulfilled the general requirements. This challenge was created to up the smut-content in the fandom, and I’d love to see you guys go wild, but everyone should be able to play within their comfort-zone.
*It’s difficult to put a firm requirement on the art since styles are so different. Some people always colour and some never do. Some make chibies and some go for realism. Three little sketches might weigh as heavily content-wise as one complete lineart. It’s going to have to be up to you to make something you feel is good enough. If you win one of the prizes, I will take a quick look to see that you’ve done the work, but we’re not strict here.

So I’ve mentioned a lot of times over the years that I used to be fandom famous in a small anime fandom and I spent a lot of my time running damage control to an anti however I’ve never actually recounted the whole tale for you all. Buckle up and crack open a lemonade because we’re going on a journey (more under the cut).
The year is 2004, I’m 17, and in my final year of high school. I wrote a lot of fanfic back then, mostly for anime fandoms and around the time I joined Gaia I started posting my fanfic “Several Blows to the Head” which became unexpectedly extremely popular. But before I go forward I feel I should give some back story because some of you will probably get extremely confused very fast otherwise.
For those of you who don’t know about gaia online let me give you some history. Gaia was pretty much THE SHIT back in the mid to late 2000s. It was an anime themed forum website where you had a little avatar you could dress up.You gained gold by posting, playing mini games, posting in polls, or even just browsing in general. There were hundreds of subforums and in each of them a tonne of active threads. Another feature was the guild system. Basically anyone could create a guild which was pretty much your own themed subforum that  the guild admin could decide the rules and who was able to join as long as they still followed Gaia’s ToS.
The anime I was into was (Bakuten Shoot) Beyblade, which at the time was an ongoing series. For those unfamiliar with the series a bunch of teenagers use battling tops possessed with the spirits of ancient mythological creatures and even gods to fight each other. Let’s just say it wasn’t winning any awards for amazing writing but it was a lot of fun and I LOVED my small corner of the fandom. It was pretty much your average shonen series of the time which meant that it had a main cast of 5 male characters (with a female lead added in the second season) and then very few minor female characters. The only actual canon ship was only made canon in a post canon addition to the manga that was not even released outside of Japan. So I bet you all are coming to the same conclusion that yes, there was incredibly bad shipping drama. The breakdown of shipping pretty much looked like this
10% slash
70% canon male/OC
20% canon male/canon female
Now to resume our story. I joined Gaia and headed over to the anime forum and found the main Beyblade thread. I posted an introduction and in it made mention that I was a fanfic writer and I liked slash. This was when I met C. I’m not going to drag her name as all of this went down over a decade ago and I hope that she’s grown as a person since then. If any of you are REALLY resourceful I mean the threads still exist. You can go find them and see just how awful it got.
C was a year older than me and apparently the authority in these parts on all things Beyblade. She was also a writer but in her own words did not write fanfics, she wrote and posted novels. She was pretty well known in the canon/OC circles and had a pretty enthusiastic following.
So when I came in to that thread and introduced myself I opened a can of worms. I was told that we did not discuss slash ships in this thread because it was not canon and it made some people uncomfortable. And ok, I can see that. It was cool. I was there to have fun and chat with people. I mean anyone that wanted to chat slash I could add on YIM, MSN, or LJ. However, 2 things started driving the knife into the wound.
It was not ok to talk slash but it was perfectly ok for C to discuss in depth her fanfics because it was an OC and obviously did not contradict canon as the stories were post (a currently unfinished) canon
People kept recognising me because my fanfic was exploding in popularity. So people kept bringing up slash and I’d get dragged into it as my fic was usually a catalyst for discussion.
To keep things from escalating us slash fans decided to make our own thread to talk Beyblade slash. Now, there was some divide in the slash fandom and people pretty much shipped only Kai/Takao or Kai/Rei but for the sake of everyone’s sanity we put our shipping differences aside in the thread and aimed to make it a positive space for everyone. I mean, most of us were multishippers so we tended to just be excited to read anything that wasn’t one of the 9000 OC fics we had to wade through to find any slash.
Whenever people would come into the main Beyblade thread now if they happened to mention slash they would get an extremely cold message from C if one of us didn’t manage to intervene first and direct the new member to our other thread.
The other crux of the problem was Kai. Kai was probably the most popular character in the English fandom and Kai was C’s favourite character. She had an extremely specific idea of how people should interpret Kai. If anyone came into the thread and made a post like “I LOVE KAI <3 <3 <3” she would be rather unkind to them making back handed comments about how the person only liked him because he was attractive or a “bad boy” or that if they didn’t have anything to add to the thread they should leave because we didn’t like spamming in the thread. If we ever started character analysis on Kai then C had to have the last word. After all she shared some characteristics with Kai and obviously that meant that she therefore knew him the best.
You all can probably imagine how well conversations went in this thread. I did my best to kindly welcome people to the thread, redirect them when they needed to be, and tried to calm down discussions when they got too heated. And if things got too bad in the main thread we’d just move to the slash thread and be super excellent to each other. There were days where C became so unbearable that her friends that didn’t even ship slash would come into the slash thread to hang with us because we were just really nice.
She was also extremely pushy with her fics. Whenever fanfics would come up shed be the first to suggest to anyone that they should read her novels. She even tried it repeatedly on the slash fans. Being completely fed up I one day made her an offer that if she read one of my fics I’d read all of hers. I didn’t even specify which fic. So she could’ve chosen one of my under 5k fics and I would have agreed to read like 200k worth of her fics. She never agreed to this in all the years of me dealing with her.
The worst part of it all was we couldn’t even really report her for harassment or anything because she was friends with a lot of moderators. The last thing any of us wanted was to get banned over some petty grievance since we’d lose all our hard work to making our avatars look fabulous.
If the whole mess in the forums wasn’t bad enough there was 1 Beyblade guild and guess who the guild admin was. The atmosphere in said guild could best be described as… tense. Anyone that wasn’t one of C’s rabid followers ran under the constant fear that they’d be booted for saying something that didn’t agree with her narrow view of things. My best friend and I were honestly surprised that she even allowed us into the guild. But she probably couldn’t afford to outright deny us as I was a pretty prominent writer in the english slash community then and my friend was also a prominent writer and artist.
Eventually we got tired of walking on eggshells constantly so some of the other slash fans and myself pooled our resources together and I created a second Beyblade guild. Our message was simple, we were just there to be a safe haven for ALL fans of the series. We were expecting pretty much the people from the slash thread and then maybe a handful of other people to join.
The entire fandom on Gaia over the course of a couple days abandoned C’s guild and joined ours. Whereas before we created ours hers was on a steady traffic decline our guild was BOOMING with posts.
Unfortunately the oldest mail I have is from 2007 on Gaia so I don’t have any screenshots of this but C was understandably upset that we’d sniped her entire user base. We did try to smooth it over with her saying that that was never our intention but it ended with her sending me a message that literally said “ok, you win” and this is something I still think about over a decade later. It forever shifted how I perceive antis.
My whole time in fandom I’d just been here trying to have a good time. I didn’t intend to become fandom famous. I didn’t intend to be in charge of one of the most active Beyblade forums at the time. I wasn’t trying to change C’s mind or fight her. And this whole time she’d thought I’d been fighting against her because we had different views on the series.
The last episode of Beyblade G Revolution aired in September 2005, her guild officially closed in 2006 and the fandom eventually started drifting into other things. I stayed active in it until probably 2008 when personal stuff drew me out of fandom and then officially took a leave from fandom in 2009 when my best friend passed away. I don’t know what happened to C but I know she was still writing her novels at that point. Whenever I see fandom drama brewing I always think back to her and how frustrated she used to make me and then I think of the “ok, you win” and I’m just left feeling sad for her and people like her. I just don’t understand how people can let their hearts be so consumed by hatred and self righteousness that it poisons their entire fandom experience. I guess that’s a conversation for another time.
One final comment that I would like to make here since I didn’t know where to fit it in above is that my one friend was completely DONE with C one day and we were talking to each other and she was like “she acts like her fics save lives in Africa!” and honestly this is the most perfect description of C’s attitude. Like good for her for believing in her writing but there is sometimes a point where you need to chill out with self promotion.
