Reading List

Mexican Sorcery: A Practical Guide to Brujeria de Rancho by Laura Davila

This book covers a variety of topics in brujeria de rancho ranging from amulets and talismans to pacts with Satan. This text is one of my favorite books on brujeria, and one that I consistently recommend to beginner and advanced brujos alike. It is a great starting point for reconnecting to brujeria, and also an amazing resource and referential text for more advanced practitioners.

Cleansing Rites of Curanderismo: Limpias Espirituales of Ancient Mesoamerican Shamans by Erika Buenaflor

This is a book on curanderismo specifically, however I recommend it to brujos too as it is an important subject to have knowledge about, even if you do not actively use it. It includes a variety of limpias for a variety of purposes, which I have used many times with great success. It is a staple in my library, and my favorite book on curanderismo.

American Brujeria: Modern American Folk Magic by J. Allen Cross

This book contains a great foundation for brujeria, and is greatly useful for more advanced practitioners too. My favorite part of this book is the introduction. It is fabulous at introducing brujeria, and more importantly the history behind the word. It contains a variety of subjects such as rosary magic, an entire section on vicks vaporub, and combat magic. Overall, this text is a phenomenal resource on brujeria, and is by far my favorite book on the subject.

Blood of Brujeria: Traditional Mexican Curses and Defense by Alexis A. Arredondo and Eric J. Labrado

This book strictly covers defensive and baneful brujeria, and is a great source on it. My favorite entry is that on the iron scissors, as it is rarely mentioned outside of oral tradition. It also has a GREAT section on protecting your home.

Magia Magia: Invoking Mexican Magic by Alexis A. Arredondo and Eric J. Labrado

Another great book by the authors of Blood of Brujeria. Packed full of information, my favorite being the section on divining with maize and divining with obsidian. One of my favorite books on brujeria.

Napoleon's Marshals and their Birthstones Part 2

This is part 2 of my series where I list all 26 marshal's birthstones, I'll also be adding two non-marshals to the list ;). Type: Mineral

Group: Beryl (Be₃Al₂(SiO₃)₆)

Color: Green or bluish-green

Cleavage: Indistinct to none

Fracture: Conchoidal

Mohs Scale: 7.5-8

Luster: Vitreous

Streak: White

Fun Fact: Emerald is one of the four cardinal (most valuable) gemstones, along with diamond, ruby, and sapphire. Its value is due to the limited amount of beryllium (an element in beryl minerals) found in one location on the surface of the Earth, making it rare to find. An even rarer type of emerald is a trapiche emerald, which has the shape of a wheel, with each piece of emerald separated by the inclusion of black shale; the shale becomes less present as time passes. Its green color is due to the presence of chromium or vanadium in its chemical composition. Traces of iron make the color turn into a bluish or yellowish tint.

Fun Facts: Pearls are made either naturally or synthetically. Natural pearls are formed inside the soft tissue of various mollusk species like oysters and mussels when an irritant such as sand gets inside the mollusk. In ancient Greece, rubies were thought to preserve mental and physical strength. Many Greek warriors wore talismans with rubies as protection when heading into battles [2].

The Egyptians were very fond of peridot and believed it to be the gemstone of the sun god Ra, giving it the name the 'evening emerald.' When determining the value of a peridot, its color plays an important role. Peridots with a pure green hue are more desirable than those with a yellowish tint (high iron levels are present). Peridot is also the gemstone with the most inclusions visibly present, which can affect its value, but it is often attributed to it being part of its natural structure.

Is there anything in French folk magic or French traditional magic about a new home/home protection?

I don't have a specific ritual but ingredients and methods yes!

RURAL FRENCH MAGIC ELEMENTS

You can make crosses to have at the doors! The plants vary according to the regions: houseleek, cross-benites with lavender, immortelles, according to the folk religious holidays however, traditionally it is on dates of specific religious holidays.

We do a fumigation in the home, certainly with prayers, with plants depending on the region: laurel, juniper... we can burn protective plants, make bouquets of them, especially elderberry. All pungent or strong-smelling plants will be protective (elderflower, garlic, hellebore, holly, hawthorn) For protective bouquets: artemisia, foxglove, meadow iris, mint, St. John's wort, walnut branches, fern, verbena, the Queen of french witchcraft.

We can do a ritual where we will pass the plant through the fire to strengthen its power. The cross is the ideal symbol. The perfect day will be Saint John's Day.

Be sure I'll return to you if I find anything else out! Finally if you need a spell to banish negativity from the house I can give you one by messenger too!

HORSHOE

I think a horseshoe would be ideal ( just like garlic). It is not ''french trad craft'', just a method I would use, but I would purify it, dedicate it to the 4 elements, fumigate it, then recite by hanging it or nailing it:

''Vigilavi, et factus sum sicut passer solitarius in tecto'' (Terese d'Avila, Psalm 102)

But it is my own creation! Otherwise there are these spells from The Witch's Almanac by Katherine Quenot, unfortunately her sources are rarely cited. Some are ancient, others modern...

Here is one of these spells that seems interesting to me because it contains verbena:

TO ATTRACT PROTECTION INTO YOUR HOME Make a purple sachet 18 centimeters on a side and put rosemary, verbena, and a lock of hair from each of the inhabitants, and a picture of the house. Close it with a purple cord, put everything in a secret place in the house and never open it.

TO KEEP YOUR HOME HEALTHY

Make a braid with two green laurel branches, then hang it on a red cord above the interior door of the house or gate.

This talisman will also preserve your family from jealousy, backbiting and the evil eye.

And this one which seems to be modern but inspired by traditional principles:

TO PRESERVE YOUR HOME FROM HARM

You will need coarse salt, cracked pepper, an egg and sticky paper.

Take the egg that you will pierce at both ends to empty it of its contents. Mix the coarse salt with the same quantity of crushed pepper.

Fill the egg with this composition after stopping one end with the paper.

Place everything in a closet or wardrobe in your main room. The egg should be changed every three months. When you get rid of it you have to throw it outside the house in a trash can saying:

''Hexes, evil spirits, in this egg I locked you, now you are thrown.

Never come back to my house,

To the world of junk return''

KIERARKTINA

Starting with the ship I don't care as much about so that I can get to the others, which happen to be my 3 favourite ships of all time, LOL.

At first I was really confused because I didn't notice Mark and thought that it was Kieran and Cristina and a horse. There was a brief moment where I thought Mark might have turned into a horse. I do not think this is the case, lol.

So the displayed items for them are:

Horse (I'm assuming a steed of the wind hunt)

A bow and arrow

Just two arrows

The Fae King's crown (perhaps just a character symbol of Kieran)

The three rings (that I am speculating are wedding rings!)

I think it's likely that Kieran and Mark will in some way briefly be drawn back to the Wild Hunt and take Cristina with them. They will, in my opinion, likely be married in some kind of Wild Hunter ceremony.

I don't think I can get more in-depth than that because I honestly do forget a lot of TDA and don't have a ton of opinions, but yeah! I will say I'm also really curious about why Cristina is silver while Mark and Kieran are both gold. Perhaps it marks her as a Shadowhunter rather than a Hunter? We shall see.

WESSA

I am PUMPED to see Will and Tessa again, they're my OGs, my little darlings. And LOOK THEY'RE GAZING INTO EACH OTHER'S EYES, 10/10 cannot wait for this.

The symbols surrounding them are:

The Eiffel Tower (not a surprise since Cassie said the story was set in Paris)

The Arc de Triomphe (once again, another symbol of Paris)

What appear to be cards or tickets to something

What looks like a magical snowglobe or crystal ball of some variety

A devil tail wrapped around a pitchfork.

The first two just tell me that the story is set in Paris. But I'm the most fascinated by the snowglobe because it gives off a sort of... ethereal vibe. Look at the symbol in the middle - it looks like a magical talisman, probably something psychic/fortune-telly. Maybe they get their fortunes read and the tickets are for a fortune teller.

This brings us to the devil pitchfork and tail.

We know that the story is set very shortly after Clockwork Princess, meaning that Tessa doesn't know the ins and outs of her demon heritage yet. It feels likely that in this story she'll discuss it with Will a bit...

OR. Or. And I like this one... Belial tries to possess Tessa while she is asleep and the Angel Ithuriel protects her. Belial talks about this having happened in the All Places Hell chapter of Chain of Gold. This would be really interesting because I've long thought I wished to see Tessa have some even indirect interaction with Belial. OH MAYBE WILL FIGHTS HIM OFF TOO YES.

Okay there that's it.

Now...

HERONDAISY

Babies, my babies. I love them so fucking much, they and Thomastair are by far the ones I'm most excited to see again. So let's unpack the Herondaisy corner THOROUGHLY.

First, I do appreciate the fact that Cordelia is still running (but, as @angeldaisies said, she is running side by side with James now and I am going to cry happy tears yet again.) Anyway, it also amuses me that she's running and James is like, reaching after her. She's going to do something brash and brave and impulsive and her and he's going to be adoring it every step of the way and I love that for them both.

So, symbols!

The chess piece (a self-explanatory symbol for their relationship that we all know and love)

The throne

Two pomegranate halves on either side of the heart

I can't think of what the throne is for, but it's very possible imo that it goes with the chess piece because - and I am willing to do a longer essay on this someday that isn't today - the final battle in ChoT is... a chess game. That ends with James, the king, on the Coronation Chair. And this throne in fact looks very much like the Cornonation Chair.

This brings me to something interesting, which is the idea of the symbols inside the hearts vs outside the hearts. I am only going to explore this for Herondaisy and Thomastair because that's what I'm doing.

In any event, James and Cordelia are the only couple to be inside the heart with no props. The other ships all have something with them - Cirenworth for Thomastair, the snowglobe for Wessa.

I am wondering if perhaps the things outside of the heart are things that the story is missing. Will and Tessa wanting to go sightseeing and getting stuck with dark dealings instead; Thomas and Alastair wanting to find Zachary who is missing (I'll get there) but instead feeling stuck at Cirenworth.

In this case, the Coronation Chair represents the past, as does the chess piece that Cordelia is running towards.

Now, I might be reading too much into that. But I'm musing and I like it.

I have 0 idea of what the Pomegranite may be - fertility? Feels too early. Katherine of Aragon? Long dead. Temptation to the underworld? ...Maybe.

In any case, I think and hope that this is going to be their honeymoon story. I want to see them in Istanbul SO BADLY and as angeldaisies pointed out the epilogue of ChoT sets that up nicely. The second wedding runes could be a flashback... maybe James is what's tempting Cordelia <333

THOMASTAIR

I am DYING with excitement for this one as well as Herondaisy's, if I don't get it ASAP I may wither and die in a blob of sadness. But I WILL get it and thus I will thrive. Herondaisy, Thomastair, Arianna, Wessa... the harvest is come.

Inside of Thomas and Alastair's heart, we have their figures running as well as a building that I'm fairly sure is Cirenworth.

Other symbols outside the heart are:

Zachary's pram (rolling downwards, away from the heart)

A car (driving upwards, away from the heart)

A baby shoe

A top hat

Assuming that the hat is Alastair's because he canonically wears hats. And remember in Chain of Gold what he did? He lost his hat.

Absolutely and 100% believe that this story will be about Thomas and Alastair losing Zachary and having to find him. Thought this before, but think it even more when analyzing the symbols.

Since it's a romcom, maybe it's like a heist romcom - they need to follow clues like the baby shoe and the pram rolling about to try to find him (watch him be nursing with Sona or something lmao). But yeah, and their car is gone maybe, so they don't know how to get around or look, and hijinks ensue.

I think this will be set while they're helping Sona move into Cirenworth, by the way, and when they move into Cornwall Gardens. Which I LOVE. HONEYMOON STAGE THOMASTAIR 10000/10.

AN END NOTE

Please don't get to attached to my theories or headcanons, and know that I am not too attached to them, either. I'm speculating for fun, and there is no way I am not going to love Thomastair or Herondaisy stories. Like, I'd read an entire book about either of those ships making breakfast cover-to-cover 100 times. This is just what I think based on symbols.

Going insane over your director’s commentary and the artworks listed (Ivan and his son is one of my favorite paintings ever) and also: Roe is catholic but he’s Cajun, which has its own brand of folk catholic, with many practices outside of the Roman Catholic tradition. He in canon mentioned his grandmother was a traiteur, which. Woof when you think about that in connection with a more Jesuit perspective on catholicism (which you said would be finding God in all things)…. That would track on well to Roe’s beliefs, who said that his grandmother has a more profound connection with God, made physical through her traiteur work. Also traiteur believe that their abilities are a direct gift from God, echoing Roe’s lines. Just. Ough. Also Cajuns (both traditionally and probably still do!) had a weekly boucherie, a communal slaughtering of an animal to share between everyone…. You can understand the symbolism. (A more lighthearted aside, now I’m thinking of Roe riding capitaine or co-capitaine in a Courir de Mardi Gras, and how happy he would have been to restart the tradition after it being on pause during the war… and how sad it would be to know so many of the young men he chased chickens with in his teen years would never be there again) Also this importance of Roe being Cajun Catholic really rears up in my mind when he wraps a tourniquet string around his finger and utters his prayer, repeating lines he finds important (‘With all my heart’) which is a deeply Cajun way of prayer (also, rosaries we’re often placed around the neck of sick children to heal/protect them, something Roe would no doubt be familiar with, what with his family history). ANYWAYSSSSSS Sorry, special interest in Cajun culture rose up and I had to infodump

NO BUT SEE EXACTLY. EXACTLY WHAT I WAS TALKING ABOUT LIKE!!!! YES!!!!!!!

Not necessarily about the weekly boucherie + the rosary around the neck thing (in the Philippines, we have something similar except in the form of a talisman called the anting-anting. I talked about it a little bit in my answer to you about the Black Nazarene on my main blog some time ago!! but yeah, same same principle, different execution!), but about how different Eugene would see these events and how he'd then react to/accept it. Folk Catholicism is always more open to mysticism than Regular Catholicism is, and the best part is you don't need the Canonization from the Vatican to just say. Hey! This is a sign from God! This comes from God! because Folk Catholicism allows a closer proximity to God than usual. Almost like it eliminates the middle man. So when Eugene experiences these things (again, phantasmagorical: did he actually experience the world pausing for one damn second for them to actually find Julian's body, or was this a case of shared delusion?) that would take several Vatican Councils to canonize as a Honest to God Miracle, he doesn't think: oh, this is wrong. He thinks. No. This is exactly how It Is Supposed To Be.

But he NEEDS to convince Babe of that. Babe, who does not see his Faith the way Eugene does, but who (Eugene thinks) desperately needs to, otherwise his guilt and self-disgust will swallow him whole. So he thinks; who else will convince him? Oh. Father Maloney.

Tangent but: another thing I forgot to put in but... in episode 6, after the Homily Eugene rolls up to and just before the start of the Patrol that kills Julian... watch Babe closely. He hugs Father Maloney before he leaves. Eugene sees it. Which is also... what made me think. Hmm. There's a relationship there that Eugene could have...... thought to capitalize on.......
