Trevor’s eyes popped open and he sang inwardly, “Good morning!”

He leaped from bed five minutes before his alarm was set to go off and bounded to the bathroom with what can only be called pep in his step.

Tapping his feet with excitement as he brushed his teeth and splashed water on his face, he practiced dialing back his insane grin in the mirror. He didn’t want to freak out the other students, but the excitement was boiling, bubbling, bursting from his body every two seconds, and at ten years old, discipline wasn’t his area of expertise.

Dressing in the outfit he selected with care last night with his mom and dad, he gathered his pre-packed suitcase and backpack to go wait by the door. His alarm went off.

A few hours later, Trevor and his parents approached the superhero training school in their blue minivan. The front of the school was packed with students saying goodbye to their parents. Some of the younger kids, like Trevor, looked excited and happy. Some were less so. Trevor dismissed the sight of crying kids clinging to their families as babyish, not noticing that some of these kids were not even close to babies. Most were older. Pre-teens, at least. Trevor’s mom and dad gave each other nervous looks, but Trevor was too busy chattering about his superhero name, and what power he might manifest, and whether his color scheme should be patriotic or not.

After a quick goodbye hug, and reassurances about calling once a week at least, Trevor finally walked into the building. He wanted to run, but that would have been very un-cool. Following a sign that pointed new students through a door to his left, Trevor found himself in a gymnasium with a group of ten-year-old kids sitting on the bleachers and an imposing man in khaki shorts. The man in shorts looked impassively at the group as Trevor sat down quietly in the front row. At promptly half-past the hour, he spoke.

“Welcome to Superhero School. My name is Principle Forsight, and today you will begin the difficult process of becoming a superhero.” Trevor and a few other kids started to cheer, but Principle Forsight’s steady gaze silenced them. “The first step to becoming a superhero is to manifest a superpower. Although you all have the genetic makeup to gain a superpower, your powers only show up after some kind of trauma, so our school was created for two purposes. One, give you powers. Two, teach you how to use them. Now,” he says, pulling out a suitcase full of sharp, gleaming tools, “line up against that wall there and roll up your sleeves.”

It’s Not Your Fault

Fictober Prompt # 3 Type: Original, super hero Rating: mostly general audience, maybe twelve and up Warnings: mention of curse, but no actual word, blame, and described destruction ___________________

Oliver raked his hands through his dark hair and watched the scene unfold in front of him. There were several fires burning throughout the city. You could hear police sirens going off and alarms blaring. Although it was hard to tell from this far away, there were people running on the streets, having given up in trying to drive to safety through the traffic and decided to just run as fast as they can.

He turned back to the young hero, “You. I was the villain, huh, I was the one who was wrong?” He laughed hysterically and pointed to the view, “Well, look what happened, thanks to you.”

The young strawberry blonde hero, Jamie, stood silently. Of course, improvement and experience come from time, something he didn’t have. All he had was determination and a bruised pride, along with a bruised tailbone, “Tell me. How do we stop it? How do we reverse it?”

Oliver shook his head, “Now? Now you listen to me?” He walked over to the teenager who was eight inches shorter than him and picked him up by the collar, staring into his eyes. He stood for a moment, glaring. Then set him down, “It’s not your fault, it’s those who sent you to fight me.”

Jamie nodded, “How do we stop them.”

“We?” he turned in disbelief, “There is no ‘we’. I am not your team member, I am going to stop them, you are going to go home. Find your family, keep them safe, and then act like this never happened.”

“What if I don’t have a family to go back to!” This came out as more of a shout than a question.

Oliver cursed loudly, “Of course, only someone who doesn’t have any parental figures would be stupid enough to get themselves into a mess like this.” He sighed and rubbed his temples, “Listen, kid, tag along with me, and help people out who need it.”

Oliver started walking at a quick pace with long strides. Jamie had to jog to catch up after a few short seconds, “What’re you gonna do?” Oliver put his hands together, "To punch whoever did this to the city…” he paused for a second, “And you.”

Okay, so I feel kind of bad because it's hard to find time to write and I'm still a day behind, so for today's I might try and just do it in headcanon form if I have time but I am going to try and get every writing prompt done. -Thanks for reading! 'Vian

I think raising the stakes in a film is important to keep an audience engaged in what they’re watching. With superhero films I feel like raising the stakes isn’t so much about the masses being in danger but more about how the individual heroes cope and deal with the potentially deadly situation. 

For example, in Thor Ragnarok while the entirety of Asgard is at risk, I feel like the audience is more concerned with how Thor handles the threat to his homeland- we are much more worried about how the heroes of the story win the fight and how they’re emotionally affected, whether they lose something important to them or they come out unaffected. This could seem apathetic in a way but we’re much more attached to characters we’ve seen the most of and audiences are going to care about what a main character cares about if they’re liked, relatable or inspiring. 

I think superhero movies should have an interesting story and to keep a plot which audiences will enjoy but they’re also not something to be taken extremely seriously with and don’t have to be looked into too deeply- the more successful movies are usually more accessible to lower age ranges for the fact that almost anyone can watch and have fun without having to think to deeply into why they like the film.It’s why films like the Avengers that are more light hearted and have more comedic value are much more successful than films like Batman vs Superman which are gritty and dark and try to have ethical values and heavy morals put into the story which a lot of people just don’t care about or find entertaining.

 The stakes can be raised very high in those film but if they have no real meaning to the main characters then the audience will be just as apathetic to the destruction and death in the movie - even batman kills people in the current DC movie universe which goes against the known moral code the characters had in a lot of previous films as well as a lot of the comics, and it causes people not to care if average people die.
