Whumptober 2023, Day 20: Blanket/Found family

fandom: criminal minds | characters: spencer reid, aaron hotchner | ship: none | trigger warnings: none | content: post 2x15 'revelations,' the tobias hankel case, dad!hotch, autistic spencer, non-verbal spencer, hotch & spencer friendship, team as a family | word count: 589.

When Spencer wraps his arms around Hotch and whispers, voice cracked and broken, “I knew you’d understand,” Hotch’s heart shatters. Spencer dissolves into tears into Hotch’s shoulder, and his knees buckle beneath him. Hotch holds him upright, murmuring softly into Spencer’s ear.

“I’ve got you,” he says quietly. “I’ve got you, it’s okay.” Morgan moves forward and slings one of Spencer’s arms around his neck, and Hotch takes the other. Together, they half walk, half carry Spencer to the ambulance. By the time they get there, Spencer’s sobs have turned into silent tears that stream down his face, and they place him down gently on the bed in the back of the ambulance. Morgan jumps back out, shutting the doors behind him, leaving just Hotch, Spencer and the medic in a quieter space.

Spencer is practically drooping with tiredness at this point, but when the medic smiles at him and says, “Hi, Dr Reid, let’s get you comfortable,” Spencer flinches away and curls in on himself. Hotch looks at the medic uneasily.

“Were you briefed on what he’s been exposed to in the last few days?” Hotch says, trying to keep his voice low. His eyes flick back to Spencer whose knees are now drawn up to his chest, eyes squeezed shut as he hums softly.

“Yes,” the medic says sympathetically. “I was. Look, you should ride with us to the hospital. The most important things right now are that we get him warm, feeling safe and get some water in him. The nurses at the hospital will take care of the rest.” She hands him a blanket, and Hotch approaches Spencer hesitantly.

“Reid? Spencer? Can I put this blanket around you? You look cold.”

Spencer’s eyes remain shut, but he nods once, short and sharp, to show Hotch it’s alright. With gentleness he usually reserves for Jack, Hotch takes a seat beside Spencer on the bed and wraps a blanket around his shoulders. To his surprise, Spencer leans into the touch, nestling into the blanket and closer to Hotch’s side.

He opens his eyes briefly, and Hotch watches them flick around the space. When he catches sight of the medic standing in the corner, preparing a few things, he presses further into Hotch’s side, and Hotch can feel the young agent tense up.

“It’s okay,” he assures Spencer. “She just wants to help. She’s not going to hurt you.”

Spencer nods once again, but remains tensley pressed into Hotch’s side and shuts his eyes again. Hotch watches his youngest agent shiver against the cold and attempt to even out his breathing with a deep ache in his chest. He’s always been pleased by how much his team cares for one another, how day by day they become more like family than colleagues. But Hotch has always felt a fiery protectiveness over Spencer that he can’t explain, ever since he started at the BAU. It’s only been amplified in the days Spencer has been missing.

Spencer opens his eyes again when the medic moves closer to them, preparing to hand him some water and take his vitals. Spencer cringes away. Hotch nudges him slightly, and Spencer looks over at his Unit Chief.

“I know,” Hotch says, reading the fear in Spencer’s eyes at having another stranger so nearby when he’s been alone with one for the last few days. “It’s alright. I’ll stay. You won’t be alone again.”

Spencer exhales some of his tensity and nods slightly. Hotch squeezes his shoulder kindly.

He means what he says. Never again.

Someone should make a compilation of the boys being way to comfortable with each others sex lives. It's so weird istg. Was watching that season 9 episode where rowena is introduced & Sam's just casually reading the sexting dean's doing on that online dating thing. And dean's totally cool with it. Not the first time I noticed it but the most recent. Like seriously

Sam and Dean are such weirdos! Where normal siblings would be somewhere between indifferent and disgusted, they are highly interested. Literally no boundaries!

Anyway, challenge accepted 😏

1x13 Route 666: Sam watches Dean and Cassie kiss

1x16 Shadow: Dean telling Sam to strip for and bite Meg (seriously Dean, that's some specific images you have of your brother).

1x19 Provenance: Dean's obsession with getting Sam laid, and then at the end he's just watching Sam and Sarah kiss.

2x09 Croatoan: Dean says that they should go to Hollywood so they can bang Lindsey Lohan.

2x10 Hunted: Dean sees Sam with Ava and immediately thinks they have sth going on. He totally forgets being mad at Sam for leaving in favor of being proud of him for (supposedly) landing Ava because that's normal.

2x11 Playthings: Dean again really keen on Sam getting some, making some suggestive comment about the mom whose kid Sam saved being hot for him.

2x15 Tall Tales: Dean makes out with the girl on the bar right in front of Sam - it may have not actually happened, but in that case Dean made it up which would make this even weirder.

also Dean's classic "she's got a sister" - because getting with someone himself is not enough, he needs to make sure his brother gets some too.

3x01 The Magnificent Seven: Dean having threesome with twins and Sam parking right in front of the motel room facing the window which has translucent curtains. Dean then gives him thumbs up and Sam is being all fond...and then Dean proceeds to have his incest threesome, with Sam right there where he can see what's going on. Later we learn Sam actually went in at some point - he acts disgusted, like a normal brother for once, but he knew exactly what was going on there, what did he think he was going to see?? He was out there all the time, he knew the twins were still in there. And Dean calls it (an incest threesome) a beautiful, natural act and is like I don't know why you're bothered :) Very normal brother things.

3x08 A Very Supernatural Christmas: Dean gives Sam skin mags to Christmas and Sam is delighted.

3x10 Dream a Little Dream of Me: Sam has a sex dream of Bela and when he wakes up Dean is very normal™ about it, he's all smirky and amused, and says "you made some serious happy noises", so apparently he was watching Sam having a sex dream for a while?! Instead of, you know, waking him up when he realized what was going on.

4x09 I Know What You Did Last Summer: When Sam tells Dean what happended while he was dead, he really goes into detail about his sex with Ruby - Dean, for once, is like tmi Sammy 😶

5x06 I Believe The Children Are Our Future: Dean shows Sam his hairy palms he got for jerking off. Sam is disgusted but Dean just leers and adds that he did it because the nurse was hot and he was bored, because Sam totally needs further details.

6x09 Clap Your Hands If You Believe: After Dean catches Sam and the alien lady, he doesn't leave the room but he watches them get up and search for their clothes.

7x22 There Will Be Blood: Dean mentions reading John's Playboy and Sam immediately knows who Dean was into.

8x17 Goodbye Stranger: Dean finds an old porn mag at the bunker and excitedly shows it to Sam and then starts to browse it as they talk shop. Sam then notices Dean is still focused on the porn and basically gives him some time alone to jerk off and Dean leers at him. Ok.

10x07 Girls, Girls, Girls (as you mentioned): Sam casually reading through Dean's sexting messages and Dean is even egging him on. He's like, oh, keep reading bro, it's getting more spicier :)

11x04 Baby: When Piper and Sam make themselves noticeable, Dean stays in Baby for a few moments and peers at the backseat, leering at her, and when he gets out he looks in through the car window to catch another glance at them. Afterwards he comments how classy it was of Sam to put a blanket under, and then says she smells good. Don't even get me started on satisfied he was, as if he was the one who got laid.

12x06 Celebrating the Life of Asa Fox: Sam gleefully tells Jody that Dean is into hentai. Dean is uncomfortable because Jody is not related to him.

12x11 Regarding Dean: Dean thinks Sam and Rowena will provide "live Skinemax" for him, so he is literally down to watch Sam and Rowena fuck in front of him - he might be forgetting himself but at this point he knows Sam is his brother.

13x05 Advanced Thanatology: It is revealed that Dean bought Sam a lap dance to Christmas and then decided to sit so close to Sam that he could hear what Sam and the stripper were talking about.

13x12 Various & Sundry Villains: Again Dean's "she's got a sister" when he's caught in the love spell - they need to do everything together after all :)

14x16 Don't Go Into the Woods: Dean asks Sam about his porn habits.

15x13 Destiny's Child: Not our Sam and Dean, but when huntercorp!Dean discovers our Dean's porn, he's basically ready to start watching it right in front of Sam.

15x14 Last Holiday: Dean and Jack are in danger but Dean is like let's not call Sam he could be having sex that's more important 🥺

Okay this discussion of the cancer arc has me thinking - what is the arc (or even single plot point) you feel CowLip did the greatest disservice with and how would you want to see it changed?

Hey!

I guess I would easily have to go with the pink posse arc because it was a powerful and deserved storyline for Justin but the execution was dreadful.

They spent nearly a third of the season on it and Cowlip woefully misused it. They even made Randy cut his beautiful hair for this mess *sobs* THE AUDACITY.

I guess they were aiming for Justin suffering from PTSD and instead of treating it sensitively and taking the time to show how badly it affected him they instead went with the crazy, high action option. Justin expressing his trauma from a violent crime by running around instigating fights with strangers! Starting fights with Brian! With guns and violence!

I honestly have no idea what was going on in the writers room because the foundation for this story was *there*. Putting aside the fact they came back to it three seasons later.

This could have been saved with some simple tweaks -

Sprinkling in some mentions of Justin's PTSD in S3, nothing major just alluding to him not getting enough sleep because he's been suffering with the odd nightmare. So it doesn't come off as being out of the blue as it was revisited after so long. Have Ethan ask about his time at high school which triggers memories of prom, or having to go to the doctor because of issues with his hand. Anything. We had that great line in 2x15 when Michael mentions using Justin's experience in the comic and Justin is happy to as he wants to talk about what happened but no one else does. Expand on that - who doesn't want to/why don't they? Brian maybe???

Exploring Britin's joint trauma over prom as each time Justin mentions Hobbs or the attack on Darren bringing back memories and his guilt over not doing anything in regards to his own, Brian's go to response is to tell Justin to not think about it or that he thought he had put it behind him. Which is of course Brian's way of coping with his own continued lingering guilt over not saving him. We get a throwaway line in 2x03 after the previous episode where the bloodied scarf is discarded and Justin let's him know he's not to blame. Emmett says "you saved Justin's life" and Brian responds "I didn't do anything." It's clear they both have some ghosts haunting them, thereby opening the goddamn door for an actual discussion about the ongoing ramifications of a violent crime never fully leaving you.

For example, Justin could let loose saying that for someone who is the world's biggest heterophobe you're all words and no action. Of course you'd tell me to forget about it the way you did about me when I was in hospital considering you never visited *boom* cue deep heartfelt talks about Brian's guilt and that he doesn't want the same thing happening again re Cody and guns being involved. Possibly Justin and Jennifer expanding on her fears (giving me Team Jen and Brian worrying) Justin finally going. to. therapy!

The most insane part of this story being zero follow up or reaction post conclusion. None. Nothing. Nada. It was like it never happened. Give the audience the odd casual scene of Justin mentioning some coping techniques, Brian dropping him off at an appointment, Daphne asking how he's doing etc. Something meaningful showing that he's starting to heal especially as he went into the role of support for Brian's cancer immediately after this!

At a point during the first lock-down I was watching 2 JD films a day XD. His whumpy acting is very enjoyable and the films in general are pretty great (to put it mildly). My nr. 1 recommendation is Dead Man. It's the best whump that I've ever seen in a film. Every scene with JD's character is beautiful.

Warning: kidnapping, violence. Heavily based off the episode titled Revelations 2x15, so if for some weird reason you haven't seen that episode this will contain major spoilers I guess??

Word Count: 2,003~ 8min

You groan as you woke up in a dark room that smelt awful. Your face was throbbing in pain, you went to touch your face when you realized your hands were handcuffed to a chair. Where were you? The last thing you remember was being with JJ to talk to a possible witness but you both discovered that he was the unsub. Tobias? You think that was his name, he ran around back you and JJ split up to look for him. Next thing you know you were hit in the head, now you're in a dirty cabin.

“Shit.” You mumble out of pain looking down at your handcuffed hands trying to see if there was a way out.

“Watch your language.” A loud threatening voice called out, the man from earlier was standing in front of you, your eyes went wide.

“This, this is God’s will.” He says loading the bullet into the gun and spinning the chamber before pointing it directly at your forehead.

“Y-you don't have to do this.” You stutter out, fearing for your life.

“Yes I do,” he mumbled, next thing you heard was the pull of the trigger. click

The whole team was at Tobias’ house trying to find a way to get you back. Your best friend Spencer was losing his mind, he was so worried about you. You guys have been best friends before you even joined the BAU a few years after Spencer did. You both went to college together, you guys were inseparable. Hours passed with no luck, Spencer was worried sick but he was trying his best to stay calm and figure out where you were. Everyone was, you were the youngest of the group, everyone tried their best to protect you.

“What are you doing? Don’t, please don’t” You beg as Tobias fills a syringe with a clear liquid, you had no idea what it was.

“It helps.” He says calmly as he lines the needle up with your vein.

“Please, I don't want it. I don't want it, please.” You were crying not knowing what was going to happen to you.

“Trust me, I know.” He says as he sticks you with the needle slowly injecting you with the drug. You wince at the pain, you feel the liquid flow through your veins your eyes rolled to the back of your head.

“Y/N? Y/N?” you sat up off the floor in an empty, completely white room, you saw your mom standing across from you, how was this possible, she's dead. Are you hallucinating? Are you dead?

“Mom?”

“Don’t be afraid to let go, sweetie,” she said in an angelic voice, it all made sense to you now.

“I don't want to die.” You cry out to your mother.

“Then fight, what's something worth fighting for?” She asks

“Spencer.” You reply immediately, you loved Spencer so much. You don't want to leave this Earth without him knowing he’s the love of your life. You don't want to hide your feelings for your best friend anymore. You wanted a life, with him.

“Fight for him Y/N. Don't give up on him, you love him. He loves you too. Don't give up on him.” She says her voice becoming quieter and quieter.

“I love him, I love him..... I love him.”

“Guys! Guys! Get in here!” Derek yells from Tobias's computer room where Garcia was working to find you. The team rushes in gathering behind Garcia, gasping when they see the computer screen. Spencer's face went white and he started crying, JJ placed a hand on his back to comfort him, but there was no calming him down now.

“He’s killing her,” Garcia said looking away from the screen where you were being beaten. The team watched intently as the scene unfolded in front of their eyes.

“Answer me! How many members are on your team not including yourself?!” He yelled, he broke you you couldn't take anymore beating. You didn't know how much longer you could hold out.

“Seven” You mutter your voice weak.

“The seven angels who had the seven trumpets prepared themselves to sound. The first sounding followed hail and they were thrown to the earth.” He says walking around you before standing in front of you again, you glanced at the camera that was filming you with a terrified look on your face.

“Tell me who you serve.” He demands.

“I serve you” You whimper out.

“Then chose one to die.”

“What?” You question your heart rate picking back up again.

“Your team members- chose one to die.”

“Kill me.” You meant it, you'd give your life for your team.

“Choose, and prove you'll do God's will.” He says as he pulls out the revolver again spinning the chamber before pressing it to your forehead.

“Choose.”

“I won't do it.” he pulled the trigger. Nothing.

“Life is a choice, now choose.”

“No.” he pulled the trigger again. Nothing

“Choose.”

“I...” You thought for a moment before a plan arose in your head.

“I choose... Spencer Reid,” you utter out.

“He’s a classic narcissist, he thinks he’s better than everyone else on the team because of his intelligence. Genesis 23:4 “Let him not deceive himself and trust in emptiness, vanity, falseness, and futility. For these shall be his recompense.”

Spencer shook his head, immediately knowing what you were doing.

“That's wrong,” Spencer says.

“She doesn't mean it, man, she's under tremendous stress,” Morgan says and Spencer shakes his head wiping his puffy eyes.

“I know that I'm not a narcissist. But she does know that I know what she means.” He says the team gives him a perplexed look waiting for him to elaborate.

“Y/N and I argued about the definition of classic narcissism not too long ago, and she knew that I would remember that, and she also quoted Genesis, chapter 23, verse 4. ‘I am a stranger and a foreigner with you. Give me property, forbear a place among you that I may bury my dead out of my sight.’ She wouldn't get it wrong unless it was on purpose. She's in a cemetery.” He explained in a broken voice.

“She's telling me where she is,” he adds.

“Okay, uh....” Garcia says typing away on the computer. Hotchner leans over her and points to the screen.

“What's that patch of green there?” He asks.

“Marshall Parish. I think it is an old plantation” Garcia responds.

“Wait!” Spencer says running to get one of Tobias's journals flipping it open before rushing back in.

“Tobias wrote in his journals about staying clean and keeping away from Marshall,” Spencer says passing the journal around to the team.

“Guys, there's a cemetery on the grounds,” Garcia says.

“She's there guys, Garcia send us the address. We have to go before its too late!” Spencer yells running out to the SUVs with everyone else. He was so scared he’d never see you again, he had to hurry.

You woke up to the man taking off your handcuffs, you panicked, what was happening?

“What are you doing?” You ask as the handcuffs dropped to the floor, suddenly he grabbed you by the hair dragging you outside. You screamed out in pain as he dragged you out to the cemetery, he drops you before throwing a shove at you.

“Dig,” he says sternly, you sobbed and did as he said scared as to what may happen if you didn't obey. You hoped Spencer got your message and the team was on their way to come save you. You dug for what felt like hours but was only several minutes, you felt weak, you needed to escape. You didn't think your team was going to find you in time. You looked at the man before you swung the shovel hitting him in the leg. He fell to the ground and you took this chance to run the best you could, you could see flashlights in the distance, was that them?

“HELP! I’M OVER HERE! SPENCER! GUYS!” You screamed with all the power you had hobbling as fast as you could, you saw them coming closer to you. Suddenly you felt something hard hit the back of your head and a gunshot echo through the night.

You woke up to bright lights blinding you, you groan closing your eyes again, your whole body ached.

“Y/N?” You heard Spencer’s voice.

“Is she waking up?” You heard Derek ask. You were alive, you were safe, you felt comfort wash over you. You forced your eyes open.

“Thank God...I’m alive” You mumble looking around seeing your team all around you.

“Yeah, babygirl you're alive,” Derek says quietly, you look over at him and smile at him.

“How are you feeling?” Emily asked walking over to you.

“Like shit.” You say with a small chuckle.

“Yeah, I’d imagine you were hit over the head with a shovel,” Emily says matching your vibe with a small laugh.

“That's what that was? I thought I got shot, I felt something hit me and I heard a gun go off and then everything went black.” You explain, the whole team was standing around now listening.

“No, you weren't shot. Spencer shot Tobias right after he hit you.” Aaron explains, abruptly everything came rushing back to you.

“Spencer...” you mumble looking over to him tears pooling in your eyes you grabbed his hand.

“I knew you'd understand. I knew you would.” You mumble before you started crying. Spencer started crying too and nodded.

“Yeah, I understood immediately. That was brilliant, I’m so glad you thought of that because otherwise... We may not have found you.” He says with a sniffle. You look around at everyone tears flowing down your face.

“Thank you guys, so much. I was so afraid, I thought I’d never see you guys again.” You admit, JJ and Garcia were crying now too. Derek looked like he was about to, you were so happy to be alive. After a while, everyone said their goodbyes and said they would all be back tomorrow to pick you up since you had to stay in the hospital overnight. Soon enough it was just you and Spencer, you were grateful you two were alone now.

“Spence, will you stay the night with me tonight? I’m scared to be alone. I know there are doctors around and stuff but I'm scared.” You admit, Spencer sat next to you and grasped your hand.

“Yes of course. You don't have to explain yourself, I figured you would ask anyways.” He says softly, he looked like a wreck from hours of crying and worrying.

“You were the only thing keeping me alive.” You say softly looking down at your hands that were intertwined together, you resumed.

“You're the only reason I didn't give up. I didn't want to die... I didn't want to die before I could tell you I love you... I love you so much, more than a friend.” You said not making eye contact with him, it was quiet for a moment before you heard Spencer crying, which in turn made you start to tear up as well.

“I was worried I was never going to be able to tell you I love you either.” He says with a small smile on his face as tears streamed down his cheeks, he continued.

“I love you too, I've been hiding it for so long. I was so scared I'd never get the chance to tell you.” He admitted you smiled at him as he brought your hand to his lips kissing it gently.

“You're my hero Spencer Reid, I love you.” You say looking at him with eyes full of admiration for him he smiles softly kissing your knuckles.

“I love you too.”

Stop acting like your boy is innocent.

There is a 1864 flashback in 2x15 where Stefan is feeding on several women (three or four) in lingerie (people in 1864 don't wear modern underwear like bras, what they were wearing was lingerie at the time, it was highly indecent to be dressed like this in the 19h century, especially around a man), it's implied he compelled them to undress and to be okay with him feeding on them and taking pleasure in it because they were really happy about it. There's even one of them lying on the sofa. We can understand what Damon and Katherine did based on context (this situation is similar to Damon and Andi or Isobel and her assistants, this is a pattern in TVD, vampires with human people in underwear are all implied to be their rapist), so can we for Stefan. Ironically it's newbie vampire Damon who compelled these women to leave, and Stefan was aware of what he was doing, because when Damon said it was too much and he was going to leave Stefan begged him to stay. I also remembered that when Damon arrived, Stefan threw a woman at him and she caressed him. Women don't need to be in lingerie for a vampire to feed on them (ex :1912 flashback in 3x16, the women were not in lingerie), there is an intended message. When Stefan explained it to Elena, she told him "sounds like you were Damon", and Stefan said "I was worse than Damon. »

Case 2 : the women in the 1920s : There is a dodgy line in his diary in S3 which mentions his days in the 1920s when he says he wakes up in strangers’ blood with women he doesn't recognize. The mention of "women" isn't innocent, because it's canon that rippers don't feed only on women, we have seen Stefan feed on little kids too. The show also made it a point that he chose to have an apartment in Chicago next to an all-girls high school, which shut down for attendance issues, I think you can guess why...

I'd like to add that absolutely no one really took accountability in the show, every rape case was swept under the rug :

and what Stefan as a character does, especially considering that Julie was going for a certain aesthetic:

“There was a sensuality and a seduction to the vampire genre that now, [nearly] 10 years later, isn’t necessarily as sexy, right?” she says, alluding to the fact that vampires can be compelling or glamorous to humans (depending on whether you’re watching TVD or True Blood) and have overpowering strength and speed.

Stefan gorges on blood, the woman on the couch is dead.

Her being in lingerie is for aesthetic, when he goes to his next victim, he bites her immediately, because even if he is playing games, Stefan’s desire is always about this:

like the twister game, it’s about feeding

so him choosing to stay across the street from an all girls school means that he played the same type of games or that he has preferences

but even in this, it’s about the feed although it’s made to look like it could be a makeout until closer examination:

The show in general did have a tendency to skew towards female victims when they wanted to illicit a certain image of disturbing eroticism:

whereas male victims were always rage or functional:

(which isn’t to say female victims were always used to illicit eroticism). The diary entry is easy to split hairs about

Stefan is the one who doesn’t recognize the women he’s with, there’s nothing to suggest that anything was coerced, particularly since in the same entry, he refers to Rebekah as a ‘woman’ so who’s to say that they aren’t other vampires he doesn’t recognize

There’s also the way it was written, which can suggest that each sentence is a different occurrence i.e. there were days he woke up in strangers’ bloods[period] in places he doesn’t recognize [period] with women he doesn’t remember [period].

This really just depends on how you want to interpret it.

I do agree that the show in general did have a problem with rape culture, which JP admitted:

“And you could look at it back through the lens of say the #MeToo movement and object to what may be a little bit of a glorification of a rape culture, but what we were working with at the time was a gothic romance with a fine line — a very fine line — separating it,” she says with a laugh. “And I used to get in arguments about it being a gothic romance and not wanting to censor the sexuality of the characters, even if it felt a little questionable at times, like specifically Damon and Caroline in the first couple of episodes [when he used her as a plaything and drank from her against her will]. Because that’s what vampires represented, and that’s what vampires were. And the culture has just shifted enough that you’d have to think twice before you dove in that boldly now, I think.”

But in this context, the issue with Stefan would then be the framing of his murders and how they were made to look erotic and not Stefan as a character being a rapist.

Not to mention, considering that at the time, JP doubled down on what Damon and Katherine did, if there was “sex” involved with Stefan’s feeding then we would just get a scene like this

There would be no reason not to.

Anyway, I’ve written about this more than I care to at this point, so.
