KANSAS CITY, MO – Ralph Yarl, a 16 year old Black boy, was shot twice by a white man in North Kansas City after accidentally ringing the doorbell of the wrong home while attempting to pick up his sibling. The white man, Andrew Lester, reportedly shot Ralph in the head through the glass door, then when Yarl was already bleeding out on the ground, shot him again. The family has described it as a hate crime, and community members are calling for justice for the young victim.

“This was not an ‘error’; this was a hate crime. You don’t shoot a child in the head because he rang your doorbell. The fact that the police said it was an ‘error’ is why America is the way it is,” said Dr. Faith Spoonmore, the aunt of Ralph Yarl.

Reports indicate that the white man was taken to the police headquarters briefly to provide a statement but was released shortly after without charge. Yarl’s family is outraged that the perpetrator has not been held accountable.

According to Dr. Spoonmore, “This man intended to kill an innocent child simply because he rang the doorbell of the wrong house. He looked him in the face and shot him… and the individual is free to go about his day as if he did a great deed. While my nephew Ralph Yarl is a great kid, an intelligent kid, a black boy is left with so many broken pieces.”

I will start with this song, from my new album, The Waves. Hi, I'm Galen. I make music, tell stories, and write. Here I hope to write about some music I have recently released into this wild wild world we currently reside in. "Stand Your Ground," seemed a good place to start, and holds both the message and energy I felt could set this spinning, rocking and rolling, and interfacing, and I thought I might try uploading directly to this platform to see what happens. By my standards the structure here is a pretty typical pop song structure with verse chorus verse chorus bridge shift gears and slow way down, and. But would you have guessed that this was entirely improvised? Well it was. Usually I'll maybe have a couple of chords and feel something is brewing and I'll just hop right on it. It's what I imagine setting yourself on fire is like. Performed live, one take, and on the spot. I left the little hiccup at the beginning to point toward this process. But other than that, it's pretty seamless. The give and take in the lyrics of tough times, and resilience makes me happy. "When you insides spill out, and you can't put them back inside / When you feel flushed and ashamed / And all you want to do is hide" contrasted with the message "Stand your ground / And you'll be golden," is the very message I need to be telling myself right now. So, wish me luck. Have a listen if you will. And blessing on your own efforts to Stand Your Ground. One last note I'll share: I also like how when the song starts slowing down (hello live acoustic options) my voice shifts to a lower register as well. My father has always told me he prefers this version of me. After years of screaming over very capable drummers, I sometimes forget it is there, but this album has let that vibration in for certain. There is nothing wrong with asking for someone to respect your needs and boundaries, especially if it regards your safety and well-being. You are VALID and ALLOWED to address those specifications to somebody, and if they can't respect that or they get defensive with you and make it an issue. There is something inherently wrong with them, not you. Your safety and well-being come first, and if someone can not see or accomdate that, they can leave. 🍧

Just a quick correction: the shooter, Susan Lorincz, didn’t “engage” with Owens’ children, she assaulted them.

So apparently the current protocol for the police—when a white person shoots, chokes to death or otherwise kills an innocent unarmed Black person—is to A) not immediately arrest the killer B) not charge them with any crime C) refuse to release their name, and D) give them ample time to scrub their social media accounts of any incriminating activity long before any “official” investigation is conducted.

Unsurprisingly, this is, almost without fail, the exact opposite of what the police and media do when a murder victim is white but the suspect is Black: A) the Black suspects are immediately arrested B) immediately charged with a felony C) and not only are Black suspects instantly named, they are instantly vilified and we know any mistake they ever made from preschool onwards, and D) the police and corporate media outlets immediately share every scrap of their social media.

This is America in black & white. It’s the centuries-old, structure of interlocking systems working precisely as intended.
