Frankenweenie (2012, Tim Burton)
01/04/2024
Frankenweenie is a 2012 animated film directed by Tim Burton.
The film is the stop motion adaptation of the short film of the same name made by Burton himself in 1984, clearly inspired by the novel Frankenstein by Mary Shelley.
The film was nominated for the 2013 Academy Awards as best animated film.
In 1971 Victor Frankenstein, a boy passionate about cinematography and science, lives in the monotonous town of New Holland with his parents Edward and Susan and his little dog Sparky. Victor's talents are observed at school by his classmates: the neighbor Elsa Van Helsinge (niece of the sour Mayor Bergermeister), the hunchbacked boy Edgar, the obese and naive Bob, the pretentious Japanese boy Toshiaki, the sinister Nassor and a very strange blonde girl called Weird Girl, who owns a cat called "Mr. Whiskers". Victor, however, has little contact with them, being too busy with Sparky: Victor's father then encourages his son to join the baseball team to make new friends and to practice a sport; at the game, Victor manages to hit a splendid home run but Sparky, chasing the ball down the street, is hit by a car and dies before Victor's eyes.
But then, inspired by the galvanic experiments of the science teacher Mr. Rzykruski, Victor digs up the little dog from the pet cemetery and takes him to his improvised laboratory in the attic; he manages to revive the dog using the electricity of lightning. The following day, however, Sparky leaves the attic to chase Mr. Whiskers, causing some damage in the neighborhood until he is noticed by Edgar, who asks Victor to teach him how to resurrect the dead and threatens him to reveal his secret to everyone if he doesn't. In order to keep Sparly's existence hidden, Victor agrees and the two revive a goldfish, which inexplicably becomes invisible.
Learning about Edgar's invisible fish, Toshiaki and Bob fear that they won't be able to win the science competition at the annual fair, and so Toshiaki tries to make Bob fly with a rudimentary jetpack improvised with bottles of fizzy drink, but fails and Bob falls from the roof, breaking his arm.
The group then decides to carry out resuscitations separately: Edgar prepares to resuscitate a dead rat found in the garbage, Nassor his mummified hamster "Colossus", Toshiaki his dead turtle Shelley, Bob an expired package of Sea Monkeys and Weird Girl a dead bat. After electrocuting the bodies, the kids involuntarily transform the dead animals into monsters due to their feelings of competition: Edgar's rat becomes a wererat, Shelley an enormous Gamera-like monster, Bob's Sea Monkeys become little monsters amphibians similar to Gremlins and Mr Whiskers, who held Weird Girl's bat in his mouth while it was electrified, a monstrous vampire cat.
After finding Sparky near his tombstone in the animal cemetery, Victor sees the monsters attacking the fair and runs to help his companions: the Sea Monkeys explode by eating very salty popcorn, Colossus is crushed by Shelley, while she and the Wererat turns back into a corpse after being electrocuted again. In the general chaos, Elsa's poodle, Persephone, is captured by Mr Whiskers and transported to the city windmill.
The citizens, feeling pity for the dog's death, decide to reward Sparky for his courage by connecting his electrodes to the batteries of their cars to revive him again.

Another animatic video by Studio Red Robin (Storyboard by Dean Roberts).
Now, from Studio Red Robin’s YT channel, there was another Re-animation Scene that was posted long time ago. However, this video is an early version of the Re-animation Scene. According to the video’s description, Victor F was going to use a treadmill (which it was connected to Sparky with wires and crocodile clips) to bring Sparky back to life but failed - until a lightning strikes from the window (which gives Victor F an idea). In this video, instead of using kites for connecting lightning (from both another Re-animation animatic video by Studio Red Robin, and the final film), Victor F build a lightning rod machine.
(Perfect timing for Halloween, and the birthday of Winona Ryder (voice of Elsa Van Helsing from “Frankenweenie” animated movie). Happy Birthday to Winona Ryder. )

You know, the craziest thing about that one theory you always hear when you tell other people who like some sort of Tim-Burton or Henry Selick animated movie (aka "Did you know that all Tim Burton Movie's are about the same story" and continues to only talk about Frankenweenie, Corpse Bride, and The Nightmare Before Christmas), is that the theory is actually partially right. Yeah, you heard me, in simple form, it is correct, but not at all in the way everyone connects it in.
It's really easy to say at least that Frankenweenie (2012) is in the same universe as The Nightmare Before Christmas, just mainly because how 1. it fits in the timeline, and 2. literally look and compare Bob to Ethan and their mothers. They are totally the same character.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Also not to mention
Tumblr media
So like, since Frankenweenie takes place in the 1950's and Nightmare takes place in the 80's/90's, it's probably not too far out to theorize that the pet cemetery could have been the beginning to Halloween Town. However, you HAVE to rule out from the original theory that Victor Frankenstein and Jack are Victor Van Dort because of how the timelines are set- AND, there's no way that Victor F. is Jack because 1.Ethan is still the same age but not as decayed as Jack-so why would Jack be older than someone who is the same age, but Jack is still further in decay than him 2. Without Van Dort, Jack and Victor F. have no similarities other than skinny boy and dog and 3.Sparky is clearly not the same dog as Zero because Sparky is canonly a Bull Terroir, and Zero is some kind of long-downward-eared slim-nosed dog like a beagle. (Also Scraps has shorter ears than zero, but in the intro you can see him and he's skinnier than Sparky and totally not a Bull Terrier either).
OH and also-also, Sparky and Zero's grave look nothing alike, ANDDD Zero's grave or a grave very similar to Zero's is seen in Frankenweenie, implying or giving a nod to the fact that Zero is already dead.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
In one of the merch stickers it implies that it says Frisky, but still. It's very similar, and if Bob/Ethan can get a name change, so can Zero/Frisky.
I know that I've talked about this theory a lot but people need to know this.

A comprehensive list of every single Frankenstein adaptation i have ever read/watched and my reviews of them
Universal Frankenstein 1931
I hate this movie with my whole being. It's like they read the book upside down and backwards. Hate the creature's design. 1/10
Young Frankenstein
A hilarious spoof of the Universal film. Gene Wilder kills it as Frederick von Frankenstein. Creature design is much better than Universal, I love the non functional zipper on his neck. So silly and goofy. 9/10 (minus one point for Creech fucking being an important joke/plot point bc it makes me uncomfortable)
Junji Ito's Frankenstein
A mostly faithful comic adaptation of the original novel. Creature design is fantastic but he has short hair for some reason. Very cool art. 8/10
Frankenstein Alive, Alive!
Literally my favorite graphic novel. Bernie Wrightson cared about the Creature so much and it really shows. Incredible adaptation exploring the rest of Creech's life. 11/10 cannot recommend enough
Frankenweenie
Great Tim Burton movie. I love Sparky. Another successful spoof of the Universal film. 7/10 (minus points for being lowkey racist/xenophobic)
The Rocky Horror Show / Picture Show
I'm lumping in the musical and movie together. I love RHPS with my whole being. And it's a weirdly good adaptation. Dr. Frank N Furter's desire to create the perfect artificial man is explicitly queer. Rocky is born and immediately starts singing about how he's confused and miserable. 8/10
I, Frankenstein
Not a great movie but I did kind of enjoy it. Adam Frankenstein is caught in the celestial war of good and evil because he is neither human nor demon. His design sucks because he's just a guy, not nearly fucked up enough. Also he's not an incel which is very out of character unfortunately. 5/10
The Dark Descent of Elizabeth Frankenstein
What the fuck is this book. Reading it was a roller coaster ride of "ok i dig this" and "what the actual fuck am I reading". All you need to know is the author sucks the human soul out of Victor and makes Creech a furry. 2/10
Frankenstein: A New Musical
I love this musical!! It's mostly book accurate with great portrayals of every single character. The original production's Creature design sucks though, it's literally just the actor with no prosthetics or makeup or anything. The music ranges from average musical stuff to absolute bangers. 9/10
Edward Scissorhands
I love this movie so I'm counting it because the Inventor makes an artificial human which is basically Frankensteining. Edward is adorable I love him so much. I think the movie is a great metaphor for the treatment of disabled/neurodivergent people in society. 8/10
The Nightmare Before Christmas
Specifically Sally and Dr. Finkelstein. Dr. Finkelstein is a super shitty dad to his creation, and Sally just wants to go out in the world and be a normal monster girl. As a Frankenstein adaptation 9/10 also 10/10 movie
X Files: The Post-Modern Prometheus
Incredible retelling with fantastic references to the original text. Mulder and Scully get justice for a monster in a crazy small town. And the episode is in black and white for no reason other than drama. But for some reason the Creature, who is called El Mutato, r**es people so for that unfortunately 7/10

MMMMM i just watched corpse bride and frankenweenie back to back . (Corpse bride was better .) their main characters are literally the same guy and they’re and both named victor LMAOO
SPOILERS. BY THE WAY.
In frankenweenie I’m a little disappointed that they did a fakeout death for sparky instead of having the Actually impactful message of “sometimes things are only here for a little bit, and then they’re gone” that THEY WERE SETTING UP BY THE WAY. THEY LITERALLY SAID THAT LINE. But OKAY I GUESS. !!!!!!!☹️ THEY HAD TO GIVE IT A HAPPY DISNEY ENDING !!!! But Yeah Duh it still made me cry because I thought it was gonna be more impactful than it actually was LOL and then at the last minute they’re like SIKE THE DOG IS GONNA LIVE FOREVER. Whatever. it was still cute. But like… missed potential man…. Just let the dog rest he’s literally falling apart the poor thang.
Tumblr media
Worst part of the movie /LH they made the dogs kiss at the end. I’m so mad at this children’s movie for being light hearted and happy how could they (but also. What if they made it better. Kids movies can be deep and impactful. You know. Ok I’m done hating on the ending I swear ok haha. ……. )
OK FINEEE but I still enjoyed it, the science teacher Mr. Rzykruski was Actually the best part and I loved him so much. He was SO PASSIONATE about teaching his students, he just had a very Intense way of expressing it. But he is such a good person and a truly great teacher . I’m SO fucking mad at the town for getting him fired. THE TOWN LITERALLY DOES NOT DESERVE HIM. Maybe he’s the one that was only here for a little while and then he was gone …. The part where he spoke to Victor about how his experiments must be made with love and passion before he left . that was honestly the most genuine part of the whole film. I’m so glad they were able to depict that..
But erm yeah the ending was a bunch of weird frankencreatures the other Bitch Ass Kids made and they all fought and it was a little bit of a forced Kids Movie Climax but that’s ok. It’s ok. I swear I enjoyed this movie. I’m complaining because I care about it.
Holy shit corpse bride on the other hand they LET HER FUCKING DIEEEEEEE THEY DID IT RIGHT THEY DID IT THE RIGHT WAYYY OH MY GODDDDD THEY LET EMILY PASS ON AND IT WAS BEAUTIFUL AND IMPACTFUL AND PERFECT. THE BUTTERFLY MOTIF HELLO??? Aham … Anyways.!!
Corpse bride surprised me a lot, I was expecting it to be gloomy the whole time BUT NO THATS ONLY THE LAND OF THE LIVING. THE LAND OF THE DEAD WAS SO FUCKING FUN I LOVE HOW VIBRANT AND SILLY AND GHOULISH IT WAS I LOVED THE SKELETONS I LOVED THE WITCHES IT WAS ALL SO SILLY!!!!!! incredible. Emily looks so ethereal when her gown flies through the wind those shots of her were like genuinely breathtaking. AND THIS WAS MADE 18 YEARS AGO! Ugh this movie is so good.
How could I not mention the music until now what is wrong with me the main melody is so beautiful and ITS GOOD ITS GOOD OK ITS GREAT. GREAT MUSIC
Tumblr media
The character designs for everyone in the living realm are Fucking Insane in the best way possible. You just have to watch it okay please trust me.
They stretched out the pastor’s features as much as they could get away with . I don’t think he could get any longer and pointier
Tumblr media
Anyways yeah great characters Amazing visuals and colors what the HELL!!!??. ALSO THE SKELEONS. The skeletons are the best skeletons I’ve ever seen maybe. these are Top Tier Goofy Skeletons. If you want something silly and fun and spooky watch this movie NOW!!!!!!!!????
THEY HAD GOOFY SILLY DANCE NUMBER WITH BONE SKELETON MUSIC YOU ARE GOONG TO LOSE YOUR MIND OVER THIS. Maybe The perfect Halloween Movie. (I am 11 days late)
Tumblr media
Oh also The main villain was a little weak and I saw the foreshadowing coming from a mile away lmao but That’s Ok I think movies are allowed to have a silly goofy evil villain with 0 motives sometimes 💙 like why did he even show up to the wedding at the start . How was he planning all this. Am I stupid
Tumblr media
Anyways they LET HER BE SO AWESOME. IM SO GLAD THEY LET HER BE AWESOME BECAUSE THIS WAS 2005 AND THEY EASILY COULD HAVE MADE HER WEAK BUT NOOOOOOOOOOOOOO !!!!! I really liked Victoria as well I love how much she didn’t give a fuck about her abusive ass family. Yeah!!!! break out!!! Play the piano!! BE AS IMPROPER AND SCANDALOUS AS YOU CAN!!!! and Victor is a little pathetic at first. but in an endearing way. Awesome movie it’s actually a must watch imo .
Anyways yeah 🥹I enjoyed both movies and I think it’s very cute how frankenweenie was inspired by corpse bride so much . (This movie also had a dead skeleton dog lol) But yeah corpse bride is better Sorry💙 I might also rewatch nightmare before christmush. But closer to christmas .. ehee…
Also don’t even get me started on paranorman I think I maybe already talked about it since I saw it earlier this year but. Holy shitttttt……… please watch that too it’s genuinely fantastic and it doesn’t hold back. It WILL surprise you. and make you cry. I NEED MORE MOVIES THAT WILL SURPRISE ME. GOD PLEASE!!!!! I NEED IT!!!!!!!!

Some thoughts on Frank Welker
Frank Welker is the most prolific voice actor in Hollywood. In the 1980s it would have been VERY hard to find a cartoon without his voice work in it. Between 1969 to this very day, he does most of the animal voices in cartoons (and some live action). He was the lion roars in The Lion King, Slimer and Ray in The Real Ghostbusters, Fred and Scooby in Scooby Doo, and even Abu the monkey in Aladdin. Sometimes I wonder what Hollywood would do without him. For fifty-four years he's pretty much been THE Go-to guy for cat and dog (and other animal) voices. Even his work specifically for Tim Burton includes Zero, Dumbo, The Martians from Mars Attacks, and Sparky in Frankenweenie but for some reason that one is not listed here on this page. Slightly off topic: Zero is supposed to have a little Jack-o-lantern nose. Contrary to some fan belief, it was never red. Yes, he's inspired by Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer but his noise is a tiny Jack-o-lantern and always has been. It wasn't changed later. The description is in Tim Burton's concept art and in his original poem. https://timburton.fandom.com/wiki/Frank_Welker

Tim Burton Sketchdumps
Tumblr media
Heya!
Here are the Tim Burton Halloween sketchdumps I was working on last week and finished today :)! Here are the list!
1. 9 protecting the pumpkin from many machines with his light staff, glad the pumpkin shrinked XD
2. Just some Jack X Sally romantic kissing moment ❤️ Loved this ship 🥰
3. Emily tendering her bouquet, wishing someone made a wedding vows to her. Though she took a break from being underground, waiting.
4. Sparky looking curiously at the gravestone. None other more said of what could be under. Could be another corpse or skeleton ^^;
5. Iracebeth (Red Queen) tendering her bouquet (I gave her a different dress ^^;), thinking about how many people would be off with their heads if they push her buttons.
6. Edward slicing the pumpkin when he was supposed to carve them ^^; I think he can do something with pumpkins then ^^
7. Beetlejuice with a jack-in-the-box ^^ (I gave him a hat XD)
8. Willy Wonka with a Halloween chocolate bar ^^ maybe for the trick-or-treaters? X3
I was going to watch 9, but there are other Tim Burton movies to watch. I don't know, I could watch it… see what happens ^^; I did watch it for the 13th anniversary, so see what happens ^^;
I didn't really watch Beetlejuice, I mean, I've seen parts, so I considered myself to draw him ^^;
Now, I've seen Edward Scissorhands yesterday, and that was pretty good movie ^^
I was going to add Sweeney Todd, but I couldn't find that movie to watch for free :( that was disappointing :( and I don't trust scam movie apps :(

so interested
and for the love of god also send asks this game is BRILLIANT
Top five movies- fantastic mr fox, x, coraline, spree, and the amazing Spiderman.
Favourite adapted movie- aside from fantastic mr fox, which is just my favourite film ever, I really like howls moving castle, though I've not read the book (blasphemy, I know).
Guilty pleasure- I don't know if I particularly have a guilty pleasure. I know there are movies that I love that are actually horrendous, but they aren't guilty pleasures by any means.
An underrated movie- Rango. It's one of my favourite films and I know it's not particularly underrated but I never seen to see people talking about it. Can you tell u kind of blanked on this one?
Favourite Disney movie (not pixar)- lilo and stitch and big hero six (What can I say, I like found family) I won't chose between them okay. Theyre both perfect.
A tearjearker- frankenweenie. Animal death gets me and like that's the whole plot /hj. I *sob* when sparky dies. Every time.
Favourite science fiction movie- the amazing Spiderman. I love the amazing Spiderman so much. It's such a comfort film for me.
Favourite animated movie- fantastic mr fox. My favourite film of all time. I adore the animation. I adore everything about it actually. Ash is me and I am ash. Every day I mourn the fact that i don't have enough friends to play whack-bat.
A book I read for a movie- I can't tell if this is asking me about a book- separate to the movie- I read because a movie convinced me to, or a book I read because of a movie, like it was adapted from the book, so I'll give you both. For the first, pride and prejudice because of twilight. I did a lot of things for twilight. I changed my fucking shampoo to strawberry scented shampoo to be like Bella. And I read life of pi, because the film was beautiful. Like the sky and shit, crazy man.

Belated 10th Anniversary of “Frankenweenie” (2012 film).
Started this pic on December (2022), and finished it on the last day of January. (I sketched over my sketch (from my sketchbook) with Procreate). Pardon the delay, folks.
“Frankenweenie” film was released on October 5th, 2012. It was based on 1984 live-action short film. (That is why I wore my Victor Frankenstein costume (mad scientist version) with my Sparky plushie backpack on Halloween 2022 for the 10th anniversary of this 2012 film).
The chalk background was done in Photoshop (I looked up on a tutorial from Photoshop Buzz https://www.photoshopbuzz.com/create-chalk-board-background/ ). The rest of the drawing (including the chalk drawings/doodles and the chalk letters) were just done in Procreate.
Happy (late) 10th anniversary to “Frankenweenie” (2012 remake).
