The hero stared dead-eyed at the bouquet of roses thrust clumsily against their chest.
“Did you get stood up?”
The words hung in the air flat and unfeeling, as strong a declaration as any that Villain was in way too far over their head.
“They’re…for you,” Villain fumbled. “I-I bought them for you.”
Hero blinked slowly but finally took the flowers by their tightly bound stems, treating them gently, as if they were a bomb likely to explode.
“You think I have ulterior motives?” Villain said.
A shrug.
“Good things don’t happen to me.”
