(via The buttons on Zenith’s original ‘clicker’ TV remote were a mechanical marvel - The Verge)
The Space Command is a product of mechanical engineering rather than electrical. By pressing a button on the remote, you set off a spring-loaded hammer that strikes a solid aluminum rod in the device, which then rings out at an ultrasonic frequency. Each button has a different length rod, thus a different high-frequency tone, which triggers a circuit connected to a microphone in the television to finish the command.
fascinating old-school tech

Don’t know if you know the name Marc Scott Zicree. He’s probably the best expert on Twilight Zone and Rod Serling after Anne Serling. He’s also written for Babylon 5, Star Trek: TNG, Star Trek: DS9, Sliders, etc.
He created a new independent sci-fi show called Space Command. It’s rather silly, the effects aren’t great, but they do have some fun stars from some of the shows he’s worked on - like Bill Mumy (Twilight Zone, Lost in Space), Nichelle Nichols (Star Trek TOS), Doug Jones (Star Trek Discovery, Crimson Peak, Pan's Labyrinth, so much more), Bruce Boxleitner (Babylon 5), Bob Picardo (Star Trek VOY) and Armin Shimerman (Star Trek DS9)!
He’s doing a kickstarter for another season of this show. Only a few days left and VERY close to the goal!
It’s reminiscent of the 90s sci-fi in the 90s, and although it is certainly not high budget, the story is interesting and it's quite nice seeing all the familiar faces.
First episode , Redemtion, is here- https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aG_mSObcWrE
If you like it, check out the kickstarter.
And Marc has said in his youtube lives that he's definitely interested in finding digital artists!

“US officially deemed space a potential battlefield way back in 1976 under Ford administration, Brian Weeden, Secure World Foundation’s head of program planning and a former Air Force officer, said in an email. Brent Scowcroft, who was then national security advisor to President Ford, on July 7 issued a presidential decision directive (PDD) (now partially declassified) “on the need to improve resilience/defensive measures against hostile threats,” Weedon explained, namely Soviet anti-satellite developments.”
Dickinson:
“One, our enduring, no-fail mission to enable warfighting operations in other domains. Two, our future mission as global SATCOM manager and global sensor manager. And three, our current new mission set compelling us to fight and win in the space domain in order to protect and defend our interests there.
“Additionally, this warfighting domain is growing, and this AOR is by far the biggest and is getting bigger, each day,” he added.
